TEDVISION PART 20: Dmitry Koldun - Work Your Magic (Belarus 2007)

THE DOORS. WHAT IS THE FIXATION WITH THE DOORS? WHO DECIDED TO GO ALL-OUT WITH THE DOORS? I want to know how they do all the door tricks

The real fun comes from the behind the scenes stuff though.

Firstly, “the main string loop of the song was available commercially as “cinematic 11 orchestra 2” in the Cinematic volume of the Orchestral Series of Sony Sound Series libraries” (thanks Wikipedia) which means as far as I can tell they basically took a stock song clip and just used it in the formal Eurovision entry.

Secondly, the singer, Dmitriy Koldun, seems to believe he has some kind of link to Princess Diana, and that he looks like her. My mom says he looks like her a little (when I forced her to watch this video) but not THAT much.

Thirdly, Koldun means Magician, so he’s just going on stage as ‘Dmitry Magician’ singing a song about magic, I guess?

The music video (not this one) is also borderline plagiarism apparently. (And it’s terrible - I watched it and can confirm that)

So yes! Good fun! A catchy song! Came in sixth in the 2007 competition, which is the best score Belarus has to date.

Belarus has only qualified for the Grand Final six times out of their sixteen total participations (not counting the cancelled 2020 contest). The nation only broke top ten once, when in 2007 Dmitry Koldun's 'Work Your Magic' placed sixth.

Belarus

The 2007 Belorussian entry is the best placed song of all time. Others have attempted to mimic the performance but it hasn’t really worked out for them. The grandest attempt was last year with Ivan, but he fell short.

The song is infectious. It helped that they had an excellent video clip that captured the mysterious side of the entry. The performance on the night was very perfectly executed and sung nicely. It helped that he looked they way he did, but all in all a very innovative performance.
