This brings me hope....

-these aren’t people being programmed to “get their head in the game” to be an “achiever” (in the superficial sense), cuz’ they know the game is bullshit, and that it is rigged in the house’s favor.

These are also persons-despite what battering they have taken in life-who refuse to get kicked to the wayside and become a forsaken throng of medicated zombies feeling worthless.

Detroit has always been known as an epicenter of culture and technology. We built most of the modern industrialized world that we know today. The first road that the first car drove on happened here. Detroit and technology have just been. However, over the last few decades, since the riots, the racial divide and before, Detroit has lost quite a bit of its luster and foresight in the game. Where once stood monoliths of creation now are ruins. Detroit has become a shadow of itself.

We have all seen the barren streets, riddled with empty booze bottles. We know that we can rely on prime parking spots whenever we go to a new flashy pop up restaurant, but things are changing. As of recent years Detroit has become a destination. A place people seek. Imagine that. After all these years the white and suburban residents are coming back to the city with no apologies just open wallets and glowing eyes. The other night I was there for one such event.

DLECTRICITY, a new media based outdoor installation project that comes around once in a while. Artists created interactive works that intermingled with the city, its architecture, and most importantly, its people. I have never in my life seen so many people in Detroit, ever. Families on the Wayne State Green Space dancing to a pseudo rave, people lining up to scream their guts out in a tent and be recorded doing so, and others just walking around experiencing the city in a new light for the first time. What the event gave to me was twofold: severe anxiety and a playful insight to our community’s emerging new media artists. I left the event confused and intrigued but hopeful, yet again, for our city’s future. Will the arts be the catalyst to continue to heal the city? It happened once, so perhaps we can host another Renaissance.
