7 Easy Steps to Follow for Flying a Remote Control Drone

You must follow some steps before taking off flying your drone. This task can vary from drone to drone. One must refer to your user manual when in confusion. When you’re getting ready to launch your remote control drone, your attention must be solely on the task at hand. Follow these steps:

1. Your drone should be placed on the ground in a location that is safe for taking off and for landing.

If your drone has an auto-return mode, it will return to this location on autopilot. Collisions are sometimes unavoidable by most auto-return modes. You definitely need an open area if you intend to use this auto-return feature. Please make it sure that your drone points away from you and that your takeoff and landing pad is at least 10 feet in front of you.

This launching pad ensures that you always have a clean location for your drone to take off and land.

2. If your drone has a built-in camera, remove the lens cap, and set your camera to the desired mode for flight.

If your camera is an add-on, switch on your camera and remove the cap, and then set your camera to the desired mode for flight.

3. Before connecting your drone battery, check that your transmitter is off and throttle is set to zero.                                                                                           The chances of your remote control drones firing up when a battery is connected are minute, but you still want to start with safety. Connect the drone battery, and power it on. 

4. Calibrate your drone.

Your drone has several high-end sensors which need to be calibrated before each flight to make it sure that your controls aren’t confused. Make sure that you are away from any electro-magnetic sources, such as speakers and power lines while calibrating.

 5. Initiate GPS lock.

GPS lock is the same as establishing a home location. Several drones come with an auto-return mode. One must reconfigure it before every flight if you change takeoff and landing locations. The drone may return to an old location, if you won’t update your home position, which could be far away.

6. Arm your remote control drones 

Arming your drone means it is ready to fly. Are you using any sort of assisted flying mode which isn’t a manual mode? If yes, picking up your drone might cause the drone to think that it needs to spin the motors to correct and level out. Try to stay at least 10 feet away when your drone is armed.

7. Slowly increase throttle to spin-up your motors and get airborne.

After you have taken off, you may want to hover above the ground about 10–20 feet for a minute to verify that your drone is under control. Before heading out, perform one last check of your controls to ensure that you have directional stability as well.

Your beautiful barn post talking about "seeing places from a new angle" has inspired me to get drone!!! If you don't mind sharing, what do you use? What do you suggest?

I use a DJI mavic pro. I recommend it for anyone wanting a drone that both isn’t a toy and is compact for carrying around. I’d encourage you to pick up the fly more combo. those extra batteries are really important. 

My advice, as a relatively new drone owner is to take the entire thing seriously and with respect for the fact you’re basically launching a series of flying knives into a world that doesn’t want them there at all. 

The guidelines in Canada right now are very strict even if they weren’t I encourage you to spend as much time as you can familiarizing yourself with the drone world and make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into. 

A few things I had my eyes opened on are: 

1) how scary it is to have this expensive device fly away from you and the internal stress it causes. It takes time to come to trust it will come back to you. But even then there are a million things that could strand your craft. I strongly recommend the insurance DJI Refresh. You have to purchase it within 48 hours of buying the drone. DO THAT. also you must have the body of the drone to claim insurance so if it ends up in a lake, put on your swimming trunks, my friend.

2) the batteries in modern drones are called LiPo batteries and they are basically little bombs waiting to go off. Seriously. so many LiPo fires. Don’t fuck around about this. Buy LiPo Safe bags for carrying and charging your batteries. Don’t charge them when they’re hot and always look for puffy sides. It’s not if the battery will fail, it’s when and you should educate yourself on proper care and how to be responsible with these explosive bundles of power. 

2a) make sure you research proper storage and drain of the batteries. fly them no lower than 30%. Store them (longer than 3 days) at half charge and don’t do silly things with them when they are hot, or cold. 

3) you will crash your drone. you just will. accept that. embrace it. everyone crashes eventually. I crashed mine once already by being incredibly stupid. no harm came to me, the drone or the world but just mentally prepare for it now. 

4) get Hover, its an app that will tell you important things about where you are flying such as restricted air space, wind conditions, KP (solar magnetic interference) and more. use it. 

5) there are a lot of power lines in the world. they will freak you out at first but then you’ll realize you’re usually above them anyways. 

6) birds everywhere will hate you and want to kill you. surprisingly its the smaller birds that are more aggressive and tend to swarm drones in groups. watch out! 

so in closing I’d say drones can be fun as all hell, scary and serious, and stressful and more than anything they require you to be an adult (if you happen to be one, if not, impersonate one like I do) about taking safety seriously, knowing your craft and it’s limits and a super big dose of faith in the technology.

DJI Multilink Connects the Inspire 2 Master Remote With Up To 3 Additional Controllers

The DJI Multilink wireless connector connects the Inspire 2 master remote with up to 3 additional controllers. The new Multilink allows slave networks to form a star network with the master controller as the hub, this allows aerial filmmakers more options in camera control and in-flight monitoring.

The system has been designed to work exclusively with the Inspire 2 and Cendence remote controllers. The slave controllers can wirelessly send commands to the aircraft through the master controller and receive images and video signals from the aircraft directly.

With a dual-band operating frequency of 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz, the slave controllers can maintain a steady connection to the master controller at distances of up to 150m from each other, which allows for efficient filming even in the least ideal environments. The latency between the master controller and the slave controllers is as low as 2.5ms (5.8G) / 3.7ms (2.4G), allowing for a reliable live-feed of the aircraft’s camera to additional monitors.

The DJI Multilink will retail for $99 USD and $282 USD for a combo that includes 3 Multilinks. The new product is available today from the DJI store, DJI flagship stores and authorized dealers in the US, Europe, and mainland China.
