Today in: things I heard on the podcast that I listened to on the bus to work, it made me laugh and decide I want that saved, so I made a note of the timestamp and now that it's the weekend and I have time for this sort of thing I've cut out the club to keep forever:
From 2002, John Robins' experience as a student radio DJ, which consisted of two nights, one when he played Lou Reed for 2 hours and one when he played Frank Zappa for two hours, from 12-2 AM. They played just a bit of it on the Radio X show, with some commentary.
I mentioned recently that there are a number of things I'd pay for if John Robins put them up on his Bandcamp page - I'd go higher than would be advisable for how much I'd pay for the full recording of John Robins in 2002, getting drunk and playing Lou Reed in the middle of the night. Might pay slightly more for the Frank Zappa night, since I actually like Frank Zappa so I'd enjoy the music as well as the drunk student comedian DJ, but that's not really the point.
I mean, it's exactly what I was doing as a 20-year-old student, except that I didn't have the colossal arrogance to think it should be broadcast on the radio. I also spent most hours between midnight and 2 AM of my twenty-first year getting drunk by myself in a room in a university (though mine was in Halifax, Nova Scotia, not quite Oxford), picking one of the singers I was obsessed with and playing the same one all night, going on incoherently and earnestly about what I thought characterized their work. But I just did that into my journal, by which I mean the 3,000-ish-page Word document that I just added to every time I had any thoughts for several years, and which is still on my backup hard drive, to never be opened again.
Since then, I have graduated in arrogance to believe those thoughts are worthy of being put up on a Tumblr blog. Haven't quite got to the phase of believing I should put them on the radio. But I'm glad John Robins did and was willing to let us hear a bit of it.

Delerium - "Silence (DJ Tiësto's In Search of Sunrise remix)" Perfecto Presents Another World by Paul Oakenfold Song recorded in 1999. Mix released in 2000. Progressive Trance
Plays: 40.4K on YouTube
Alright, folks, this song, without a doubt, is definitely one of the most iconic dance tracks of all time, but let's first go over how it originally came to fruition and then try to get at what makes it so goddamn satisfyingly good 😌.
The whole story behind Tiësto's "In Search of Sunrise" remix of Delerium's "Silence" begins all the way back in the mid-80s with a Canadian label called Nettwerk Records, who are a pretty big deal now, but weren't always. They started out primarily as an industrial, synthpop, and alternative rock outfit, but towards the end of the decade, they were able to convince a still-teenaged Sarah McLachlan to move all the way across the country, from her Halifax home to Vancouver, in order to sign with them.
McLachlan would then grow to become the label's biggest moneymaker, but throughout the 90s, Nettwerk would remain mostly focused on industrial music. Her massive success most likely allowed them to finance their far more niche industrial ventures though, and in 1994, they were able to add Front Line Assembly side-project Delerium to their ranks.
Originally formed as a duo in 1986 that made instrumental industrial music, Delerium would eventually grow and morph themselves into a unique act that drew influence from the new age / trip hop-worldbeat sound of Enigma ("The Sadeness") and blended that with ethereal wave, beginning their tradition of enlisting female vocalists to sing over their highly intricate productions, with their 1994 Nettwerk debut album, Semantic Spaces, featuring the voice of labelmate Kristy Thirsk on four of its songs.
Then, after going nearly three years without releasing an album, Delerium returned with Karma, which, this time, came with five different female vocalists on it, including Sarah McLachlan, who'd front "Silence."
youtube
Now, if you've never heard the original version of "Silence" before, you've really been missing out, because it's a brilliantly lush piece of slow, late 90s melancholic trip hop-pop, with a Gregorian chant choir that earns Delerium its visceral comparison to an act like Enigma. The song simmers for a while with McLachlan's late entrance, and then, with a somewhat sharp change in the music, we enter a new phase that we're originally led to believe is the chorus. But following the second verse, we learn that that part that we originally thought was the chorus is actually just the pre-chorus, because that's when this song unexpectedly climbs to a whole new level, with McLachlan significantly raising her vocal pitch and singing with a slow, yet intense passion, as Delerium complementarily crank up the strings and add some more pattering to their drumbeat.
And within that same year of the release of Karma, Nettwerk also decided to get in on the electronic dance game too, by launching their own eclectic series called Plastic Compilation, that would license tracks from other labels. The second volume, from 1998, would feature the first known remix of "Silence," subtitled the "Sanctuary Mix," which was done by a US trance duo called Fade. It was a more-than-solid remix that could definitely slot in as a nice, long buildup track within any conventional late 90s vocal trance mix.
youtube
But the launching of that Plastic Compilation series would then eventually lead Nettwerk to build out their very own contemporary dance wing by the turn of the millennium too, securing North American deals with European acts like Plump DJs, BT, and, of course, Tiësto.
So, for this "In Search of Sunrise" remix, Nettwerk now had all three prongs who were to be involved in making the song on their very own roster. And perhaps that intermediate remix by Fade, that the label licensed from elsewhere for their own compilation, provided some impetus for them to then commission their very own in-house remix.
And none of those remixes are better than Tiësto's, which appears to have been first recorded in 1999, featured on the B-side of a 12-inch acetate that was pressed by London mastering studio Masterpiece, alongside another "Silence" remix done by Belgian trance duo Airscape on the A-side, which is also excellent. But whereas the Fade remix was perfectly suited for the beginning or middle of a mix, Tiësto was able to craft one that could easily serve as a mix's crown jewel, which is exactly how Paul Oakenfold wound up utilizing it on his very own otherwise lackluster Perfecto Presents Another World double-disc in 2000.
Now, allow me to briefly refer back to the original version of "Silence" again, because I think that the three-level approach that Delerium took with it—the opening simmer, followed by the false chorus, and then the highly gratifying actual chorus—partially informs the shape of Tiësto's very own spellbinding take here.
Tiësto's "In Search of Sunrise" remix strips out all the Gregorian chant from the original, but he still manages to maintain a little bit of that new ageiness with some whimsical whistling in the front half to initiate a simmer stage, which then sees McLachlan making her entrance over a minimally pumping backbeat. Tiësto cycles through this a few times in different ways, slowly increasing the tension each time, and surrounds or bookends McLachlan's vocal with a stabbing and warm synth that, as it intensifies, becomes more metallic.
And then after running through a series of some verses and pre-choruses, we finally get to the real chorus, which in the original version and the Fade remix serves as the song's peak, but in Tiësto's mix, is actually yet another stepping stone to something much larger, as he cleverly features McLachlan's vocal climax in his breakdown, undergirded solely by atmospheric synth pads. This is Tiësto's calm before his ensuing storm.
And then the moment we've been patiently anticipating proceeds to finally arrive: the atmospheric pads swell, and then a towering big-room string synth suddenly takes center-stage, vaulting itself as if it were breaking through the earth's crust from 30,000 feet below sea level. It then recedes, and as it starts to grow again, a snare roll initiates to a point that then unlocks a 4/4 kick and snare combo. And at that same moment, the lead synth forms into a melody, which is then followed by a more intense synth melody in a higher key to succeed it. And a layer of burbling acid, which is a callback to an earlier stage in the song that ties both halves of the remix together, is thrown back in as well.
I got into the weeds a little bit there, but needless to say, this thing's an absolute fucking monster of a tune. And I think Tiësto's instinct to employ a similar formula to the original, and then deviate from it by using the peak moment of that original—in his breakdown, no less!—in order to lead into something *much* bigger, is a terrific move on his part that allows him to show what trance music is truly capable of (the Airscape remix, which is a bit more Euro-gallopy, does something like this too, by the way). It feels like an electronic music equivalent of what witnessing a full-orchestra symphony in the 1800s was probably like; just so much power and gravitas there. And yes, I realize that I'm saying this about fucking Tiësto. I am fully cognizant of how completely corny I sound right now. You don't have to tell me.
Anyway, that big, peaking trance moment isn't the only thing that puts this track on a dance music pedestal. I think Tiësto also draws the raw emotionality out of McLachlan more effectively on this remix than any other version of this song does. Her vocals are multitracked and layered on the original, but Tiësto applies some reverb to them with his own version as well. And there's just this gut-punching and knowingly defeated resignation in McLachlan's voice here that signifies a hurt that runs far deeper than just some surface-level, instantly reactive anger, almost as if she's akin to one of those poor, defenseless animals that she'd repeatedly ruin so many of our days with some years later. And I think Tiësto's subtle touch of reverb here gives her words the ability to linger for just a little bit longer and allows them to penetrate a tad more deeply.
Suffice it to say that I don't really like what Tiësto became since the term "EDM" got coined, but the dude was clearly on one here with this astonishing remix of his from much earlier in his career. His take on "Silence" really is an all-time progressive trance banger. And now you know part of the long backstory behind it too! 😊

So what's it like being a radio dj? When I was younger I wanted to give it a try but I don't think I have the charisma for it.
I honestly love what I do - I get to bring attention to fantastic music that may otherwise be overlooked or ignored in the mainstream! Being a part of a community station, I have full autonomy over my time, and get to play just about whatever I want. Obviously there are still some restrictions and lines that shouldn't be crossed.
Genuinely, I recommend people look into supporting their local community radio station, because more often than not they provide a voice for the community that a corporate radio station won't. At CKDU we have programming in Arabic and Farsi, and we used to have a Greek show! You won't hear THAT on Q104 (the major rock station in Halifax)
