I've been listening to an amazing podcast called Pop Pantheon by DJ Louie XIV, in which he and a guest spend each episode deep diving into the life and work of a particular pop music artist.

I got particularly hooked listening to the Spice Girls episode. It's partially filled the void in my life left when I finished listening to every episode of All I Want To Do Is Talk About Madonna twice.

Anyway, it got me thinking about what artists I wish they would do that they'll probably never do, and two came to mind -- Utada Hikaru (宇多田ヒカル) and Ayumi Hamasaki (浜崎あゆみ) -- two of the biggest pop musicians in Japan when I was growing up and becoming obsessed with Japanese media. I actually know way more about Utada-san, who has been bigger overall and more internationally renowned, so that made me think I should do my own deep dive into Ayumi and see what I can learn.

I started with her debut album, which I had a copy of on CD when I was in high school -- A Song for ×× (エイ・ソング・フォー) -- but then I realized there was an EP that came before that called Nothing from Nothing (ナッシング・フロム・ナッシング) attributed to "Ayumi Hamasaki featuring Dohzi-T and DJ Bass," which is the group she tried to debut with but the mini-album didn't chart.

Given its lack of success, I didn't expect to like it nearly as much as I do. I can see that it's quirky, but I found it pretty fun. The standout track for me was "LIMIT," followed by the title track.

Apparently these CDs are very rare because they sold poorly and then became collector's items once she became a mega star, which I think is quite fun. I wish I had a copy!
