VeronaHills, Round Nine: Monty (Uni)
Jacob's hoe met the dirt with a great, chuffing thud.
A terrible thing had happened - a girl rejected him. Miranda Capp's face replayed in his mind, twisting eternally over and over like she'd been hit with a bad smell. Now the greenhouse bore witness to his 'moving on and forgetting about it' phase; he endeavoured to plant tomato seeds even as her words hung about him like furious wasps, freshly disturbed from their nest.
"Oh no. I see where this is going. Just because you're a Monty hanger-on doesn't make you a Monty."
The line about Miranda being popular with Montys was clumsy. Jacob had known it even as his tongue lobbed the remark out there. The harsh truth was vollied back: Bianca Monty had bankrolled his move to university as a favour to Betty Goldstein. He wasn't family to either wealthy woman - no, put aptly by the Capp's alt-goddess, he was merely a hanger-on. High society felt sorry for Jacob and his father, reeling from the loss of a beautiful, sociable mother and wife.
Puck had been invited into the Monty house too but had no issues integrating with every echelon. Snobby socialite or salt of the earth - it didn't matter, as Jacob watched him be charming for the former and chill for the latter.
Why? Jacob threw aside the hoe and scraped the sweat from his brow with the back of his hand. Why can't I be like him?

" The power of music just kinda kills all those ills; it cures everything and you’ve got more energy just from the music. And, I’ve never seen it fail. It’s good for ya; real good for ya. "
Happy Heavenly Birthday, singer-drummer, Levon Helm
youtube
Levon Helm was known for his deeply soulful, country-accented voice, multi-instrumental ability, and creative drumming style, highlighted on many of the Band’s recordings, such as “The Weight”, “Up on Cripple Creek”, and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.”

Negroes with Guns - Robert F. Williams
click the title link to Download for FREE from The BLACK TRUEBRARY
Negroes with Guns is a 1962 book by civil rights activist Robert F. Williams. Timothy B. Tyson said, Negroes with Guns was "the single most important intellectual influence on Huey P. Newton, the founder of the Black Panther Party".
The book is used in college courses and is discussed in debates. Negroes with Guns was Williams' experience throughout the Civil Rights Movement of Monroe, North Carolina.
Because black rights were constantly violated, the self-defense policy was born, with Williams saying there was a need to "meet violence with violence." However, Williams claimed that black militants were not promoting violence, but were combating it, believing in self-defense and not aggression.
youtube
NEGROES WITH GUNS: Rob Williams and Black Power tells the dramatic story of the often-forgotten civil rights leader who urged African Americans to arm themselves against violent racists. In doing so, Williams not only challenged the Klan-dominated establishment of his hometown of Monroe, North Carolina, he alienated the mainstream Civil Rights Movement, which advocated peaceful resistance.
For Williams and other African Americans who had witnessed countless acts of brutality against their communities, armed self-defense was a practical matter of survival, particularly in the violent, racist heart of the Deep South.
As the leader of the Monroe chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Williams led protests against the illegal segregation of Monroe’s public swimming pool. He also drew international attention to the harsh realities of life in the Jim Crow South.
All the while, Williams and other protestors met the constant threat of violence and death with their guns close at hand. In August 1961, the Freedom Riders, civil rights activists trained by Martin Luther King, Jr. to lead non-violent resistance, came to Monroe to demonstrate the superiority of passive resistance. An angry mob turned on the protestors and, by the end of the day, the Freedom Riders had been bloodied, beaten and jailed, and Rob Williams was on the run from the FBI.
Backed by a jazz score by Terence Blanchard (Barbershop and the films of Spike Lee), NEGROES WITH GUNS uses interviews, rare archival footage and searing photographs to chronicle Williams’ rise to notoriety, his eight-year exile in Cuba and Mao Zedong’s China and his much-publicized return home in 1969. Voices include historians, members of Williams’ Black Guard—armed men committed to the protection of Monroe’s black community—and Williams’ widow, Mabel. For eight years, Williams and his family lived in exile, first in Cuba and then in China.
In Havana, Williams began to broadcast a 50,000-watt radio program called "Radio Free Dixie." Selected recordings are featured in NEGROES WITH GUNS. The radio show fused cutting-edge music with news of the black freedom movement and Williams’ editorials, which, among other things, urged blacks not to fight in Vietnam.
In exile from 1961 to 1969, at the height of the American Civil Rights Movement, Rob Williams and his accomplishments have been largely erased from the public consciousness. According to the filmmakers, NEGROES WITH GUNS helps to “restore Rob and Mabel Williams to their rightful place as important civil rights figures who defied the white power structure without the protection of large numbers or the attention of television cameras.”

PJO characters and what I think their music tastes are (by the way, the internet? No longer an issue for the purposes of this post)
Rachel Elizabeth Dare: Oh, she's cool. Her playlist is made up, almost entirely, of artists you've never heard of until just now. Think about it, she's in New York City, so many talented people are prowling for a chance to strike it big, and as a rich person, she feels she owes it to them to give them a chance, and if she likes them, to endorse them publicly. She's canonically part of the avant-garde performance art scene, so this really isn't much of a stretch.
Percy Jackson: I think he tells people he likes Jimmy Buffet and other people like him, and he does, especially 'brandy you're a fine girl', mostly for nostalgia's sake because Sally used to play that on long road trips, so it's not a lie. But it feels like one. He knows that when people ask that question, they're trying to figure out what kind of person you are, and wants to convey that he's just this easygoing guy, y'know? Easy, breezy, beautiful, covergirl. Harmless and unassuming and kinda goofy, not much going on under the surface. But there IS a lot going on under the surface, he IS angry, and listens to a lot of angry, angsty music. Smashing Pumpkins, Insane Clown Posse, that kind of thing. But if you hand him the aux, he's not gonna play any of that personal shit for you unless he really trusts you.
Annabeth Chase: She's that girl that pretends not to like pop music because she doesn't wanna come across as a vapid airhead, but she's also learned that answering 'classical' won't win her any cool points, so she caves and just says she doesn't have a preference. Most of the time she's listening to music, it's not even like... With intention. She's just listening to music because she can't clean her room in silence. And for the most part... Yeah it's Taylor Swift. With some Journey and Bo Burnham thrown in there for flavor. Although she does have some weird things in there picked up from the weather reports on welcome to nightvale, because she's a podcast girlie.
Nico diAngelo: I think his time in the casino has exposed him to a dizzying variety of music in really quick succession, meaning he's very open-minded and genuinely will listen to just about every genre, every era, at least once. Also, he doesn't think to catagorize by genre, or even vibes, he just puts them all into the same playlist the minute he finds out they exist. Dean Martin, Will Wood, and everything in between is home in his playlist.
Hazel Levesque: Hazel, on the other hand, was dead for all that time. So while she's open to new music, she hasn't had the opportunity to adjust to this generation's sonic landscape, so she mostly prefers the classics of her time, or modern music that tries to recreate that sound. Think 'I will always think of you' from the Bojack Horseman soundtrack.
Will Solace: He loves Dolly Parton and the Dixie Chicks with his whole Texan heart. His playlist contains mostly that, and some of his mom's work too, although he feels a little weird listening to it because, like, that's his mom. It feels weirdly personal to share that with other people, but it's nice too, having that closeness with people. He's more open than Percy, more willing to be vulnerable with the people he loves, because he doesn't see his authentic self as something to hide.
Piper McLean: She's a theater kid through and through. Yes, once upon a time, she wanted to be just like daddy. And she loves, absolutely loves, belting her heart out to the entire soundtrack of whatever musical she couldn't get out of her head. Last week it was Twisted, this week it's West Side Story, next week, who knows?
(If there's anyone you want me to cover, just ask!)

can you do a longlist of the books about strong girl protags and female friendships, etc. that were really impactful/your favorites so i know what to gift/rec any young girls in my life?
aww!! i would literally love nothing more than to compile such a list ty anon. i tried to put them in an order vaguely representative of youngest audiences to older...i'm not sure how well some of these would hold up in 2023 but they're all ones i remember enjoying and having an impact on me somehow...
not one damsel in distress by jane yolen
the daring book for girls by andrea j. buchanan & miriam peskowitz
the whole dear america series!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the ordinary princess by m. m. kaye
the caddie woodlawn series by carol ryrie brink
walk two moons by sharon creech (i used to have whole passages of this book memorized because i read it so often...potentially the most formative one on this list)
because of winn-dixie by kate dicamillo
the scholastic encyclopedia of U.S. women by sheila keenan (my elementary school art teacher had this book in her classroom library and i remember flipping through it when i was hanging around after school while my mom was doing PTA stuff...it was the first time i'd heard of so many of those women and further stoked my interest in history. i remember being so disturbed [and also intrigued] by the entry about ethel rosenberg specifically. i'm sure there are more updated versions of the book but this is the particular edition i remember reading.)
the penderwick sisters series by jeanne birdsall
bloomability by sharon creech
everything on a waffle by polly horvath
the tracy beaker series by jacqueline wilson
the outcasts of 19 schuyler place by e. l. konigsburg (also extremely formative)
saffy's angel / the whole casson family series by hilary mckay (i used to carry these books around with me as if they were security blankets)
p.s. longer letter later and snail mail no more by paula danziger & ann m. martin
the secret language of girls by frances o'roarke dowell
the tail of emily windsnap by liz kessler
savvy by ingrid law
love, stargirl by jerry spinelli (idk if any book had more of an impact on me as a child tbh like this rocked my world so completely i still think about it/quote it all the time. i know a lot of people read stargirl in school and honestly i don't think it's that good but the sequel is so underrated. so read it.)
a perfect gentle knight by kit pearson
feathers by jacqueline woodson
habibi by naomi shihab nye
the anastasia krupnik series by lois lowry
criss cross by lynne rae perkins
ella enchanted by gail carson levine........OBVIOUSLY
esperanza rising by pam muñoz ryan
kira-kira by cynthia kadohata
the city of ember by jeanne duprau
bad girls by cynthia voigt (tbh i REALLY don't know how this one holds up but i remember thinking it was pretty edgy as a kid)
little women by louisa may alcott
hurt go happy by ginny rorby
persepolis by marjane satrapi (obviously for slightly older readers)
the aforementioned rookie yearbook, natch. (also older)

My Psychic Childhood and Uncanny Eavesdropping Superpowers
How a curious and wacko kid became an oddly-perceptive adult
Debra G. Harman, MEd.

I was a snoopy little fat kid who listened in on my parents through the heater vents. We all did — my brother, sister and me.
We lived in an old farmhouse with a large grate at the top of the stairs. Lying on the floor with our heads on the vent gave us a direct pipeline to our parents’ bedroom downstairs. Their real conversations echoed through the vent.
Authentic conversation overheard through heater vent
“My bladder’s about to burst!”
“Well, burst it on your side of the bed!”
This access to parental discourse was solid gold!
Okay, conversations were disturbing on occasion, but yielded real adult information. Not the watered-down pablum grownups fed us.
It was the ’60s and and sex, drugs, and rock n roll were coming alive! Not so much on the farm though.
Rural Oregon lacked excitement
So we just made shit up best we could and searched for dirt under every rock.

Heart of Dixie (Martin Davidson, 1989)
Firstly: would anyone in the Sydney area like a ticket to see Typhoon Club tonight at 5:50pm at Golden Age? Ticket as screenshot here! More compelling and convincing people might say otherwise but i think it's the greatest movie ever made. But i'm too sick to go, so i'll be spending my time in bed going through the Phoebe Cates oeuvre, watching such great gems as...
Heart of Dixie! You know, it takes a certain gall to make a civil rights movie on integration coming to an Alabaman university without a single black protagonist and what black characters there are (a mammie housekeeper, other servants, an unnamed man beaten by police, a student escorted by the National Guard) being given overall less than 10 minutes screen time. I mean i'd love it if one were made today because it seems so impossible, but also impossible in 1989. Hadn't Eyes on the Prize come out a couple of years earlier?
The Civil Rights movement as viewed from inside a sorority house. All danger, violence and consequence very outside those walls and outside the minds of young women concerned with receiving pins from fraternity members. It's as valid a perspective as any, just an odd one to be put for public consumption. Consequence feels kept out of this movie as well. I mean it could be a Gone with the Wind for the 60s, but really is just a soft, goofy nostalgia piece. Phoebe Cates has a too small role playing a hip, bohemian girl bound for New York. She drinks from a "Colored Only" fountain on her way out of town.
