Paul J. Hanly Jr., Top Litigator in Opioid Cases, Dies at 70 Paul J. Hanly Jr., a top trial lawyer who had been central to the current nationwide litigation against pharmaceutical companies and others in the supply chain for their role in the deadly opioid epidemic, died on Saturday at his home in Miami Beach. He was 70. The cause was anaplastic thyroid cancer, an extremely rare and aggressive disease, said Jayne Conroy, his longtime law partner. Over his four-decade career, Mr. Hanly, a class-action plaintiffs’ lawyer, litigated and managed numerous complex legal cases, involving among other things the funding of terrorists, stemming from the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and allegations of the sexual abuse of dozens of boys by a man who ran an orphanage and school in Haiti. But nothing compares to the national opioid cases that are pending in federal court in Cleveland on behalf of thousands of municipalities and tribes against the manufacturers and distributors of prescription opioid pain medications. The federal opioid litigation is regarded by many as perhaps the most complex in American legal history — even more entangled and far-reaching than the epic legal battles with the tobacco industry. The defendants — including every link in the supply chain of opioid manufacturing, distributing and dispensing — are accused of aggressively marketing painkillers while downplaying the risks of addiction and overdose. Their actions, Mr. Hanly has argued, contributed to the opioid epidemic that has raged across the country for two decades, killing hundreds of thousands of people who started abusing pain medications like OxyContin and transitioned to street drugs like heroin and fentanyl. “This has probably been the most complicated constellation of litigation that’s come to the federal court in my tenure,” Judge Dan A. Polster of the Northern District of Ohio, who is overseeing the sprawling case, said in a phone interview on Saturday. “I’ve been fortunate to have the best lawyers in the country on all sides, and Paul was one of them.” “He was an excellent lawyer, a consummate professional,” the judge added. “He fought hard. He fought fairly. And that’s what you want from a lawyer, from an advocate.” He said that Mr. Hanly had a leadership role “in helping to organize and make cohesive the plaintiffs’ side of the case.” Mr. Hanly, of Simmons Hanly Conroy in New York, was one of three co-leads of the Plaintiffs Executive Committee, which handles all aspects of the case for plaintiffs, along with Joe Rice, of Motley Rice in South Carolina, and Paul T. Farrell Jr., of Farrell Law in West Virginia. At the same time, multiple opioid cases are proceeding at the state level. Mr. Hanly had also been preparing for a bellwether case against manufacturers and distributors that is scheduled to go to trial next month in Suffolk County, N.Y. He had long been at the forefront of efforts to hold drug companies accountable. He brought one of the first big lawsuits against Purdue Pharma in 2003 for failing to warn more than 5,000 patients about the addictive properties of OxyContin. His clients eventually settled with Purdue for $75 million. It was one of the few instances in which a drug maker agreed to pay individual patients who had accused it of soft-pedaling the risk of addiction. Mr. Hanly had a history of taking on complex cases with vast numbers of plaintiffs. Shortly after the 2001 terrorist attacks, he represented some of the families who had lost loved ones on the planes and in the World Trade Center. He also filed suit to stop the sale of tanzanite, a raw stone used as a cash alternative to fund terrorist activities. That lawsuit was expanded to include foreign governments, banks and others that supported Al Qaeda. Portions of it remain pending. Another of his important cases was a 2013 landmark settlement of $12 million on behalf of 24 Haitian boys who said they had been sexually abused by Douglas Perlitz, who ran programs for underprivileged boys and was subsequently sentenced to 19 years in prison. Mr. Hanly said the defendants, including the Society of Jesus of New England, Fairfield University and others, had not properly supervised Mr. Perliitz. Mr. Hanly filed additional charges in 2015, bringing the total number of abused youths to more than 100 between the late 1990s and 2010. “Paul was a lawyer’s lawyer,” said Ms. Conroy, his law partner. She said he was renowned for his exhaustive trial preparation, his creative trial strategies and his nearly photographic memory of the contents of documents. He was also known for veering sartorially from the muted grays and blacks of most lawyers to more jaunty attire in bright yellows, blues and pinks. He favored bespoke styles that were flashy yet sophisticated. His two-tone shoes were all handmade. In a recently published book about the opioid industry, “Empire of Pain,” Patrick Radden Keefe described Mr. Hanly as looking “like a lawyer in a Dick Tracy cartoon” with his bold colors and tailored shirts with stiff, contrasting collars. But none of this, Mr. Keefe made clear, diminished his competitive edge. “Paul was a man of few words and a commanding presence,” said David Nachman, who recently retired from the New York attorney general’s office, where he was the lead lawyer on the state’s opioid case and was working with Mr. Hanly to bring the case to trial in Suffolk County. “When he entered a room, everyone noticed,” Mr. Nachman said by email. “When he spoke, everyone listened, and when he smiled, you knew things would be OK.” Paul James Hanly Jr. was born in Jersey City, N.J., on April 18, 1951. His father held various government posts, including deputy warden of the Hudson County Penitentiary and hospital administrator. His mother, Catherine (Kenny) Hanly, was a homemaker. His family was rather notorious in New Jersey; some members had been indicted on corruption charges and had served time in jail. These included his maternal grandfather, John V. Kenny, a former mayor of Jersey City and a powerful Hudson County Democratic boss known as “the pope of Jersey City,” who was jailed in the 1970s after pleading guilty to charges of income tax evasion. Mr. Hanly took a different path. He went to Cornell, where his roommate was Ed Marinaro, who went on to play professional football and later became an actor (best known for “Hill Street Blues”). Mr. Hanly, who played football with him, graduated in 1972 with a major in philosophy and received a scholar-athlete award as the Cornell varsity football senior who combined the highest academic average with outstanding ability. He earned a master’s degree in philosophy from Cambridge University in 1976 and a law degree from Georgetown in 1979. He then clerked for Lawrence A. Whipple, a U.S. District Court judge in New Jersey. Mr. Hanly’s marriage in the mid-1980s to Joyce Roquemore ended in divorce. He is survived by two sons, Paul J. Hanly III and Burton J. Hanly; a daughter, Edith D. Hanly; a brother, John K. Hanly; and a sister, Margo Mullady. He began his legal career as a national trial counsel and settlement counsel to Turner & Newall, a British asbestos company, one of the world’s largest, in its product-liability cases. The company was purchased by an American firm, Federal-Mogul, in 1998, after which it was overwhelmed with asbestos claims and filed for bankruptcy in 2001. Mr. Hanly and Ms. Conroy spent much of their time steeped in negotiations with plaintiffs’ lawyers. They soon switched to representing plaintiffs themselves. “We recognized over time that that was more important to us,” Ms. Conroy said, “to make sure victims were compensated for what happened.” Jan Hoffman contributed reporting. Juan Vallejo Corona (1934-?)
Tumblr media
Juan Corona, also known as the Machete Killer, is a Mexican-American serial killer who murdered at least 25 migrant farm workers. The victims were found buried in shallow graves in fruit orchards in California in 1971. His exact victim count is unknown and may be a lot higher, according to local authorities. Corona was convicted in 1973, but his conviction was overturned in 1978 on the basis of incompetent legal representation and he received a new trial. In 1982, Corona was yet again found guilty of all 25 murders and is currently serving a life sentence at Corcoran State Prison in California.
Juan Vallejo Corona was born in 1934 in the State of Jalisco, Mexico. He first interested the United States in 1950, illegally crossing the border into California. At 16, he worked picking carrots and melons in the Imperial Valley for 3 months before moving north to the Sacramento Valley. In 1944, Corona’s half-brother Natividad Corona had emigrated to California for work and settled at Marysville, across the Feather River from Yuba City. Corona moved to this area in May 1953, at Natividad’s suggestion, and began working on a local ranch. His first marriage was to Gabriella E. Hermosillo on October 24, 1953, in Reno, Nevada and in 1959 he married Gloria I. Moreno and the couple had 4 daughters.
In late December 1955, a flood occurred on the Yuba and Feather Rivers – one of the most widespread and destructive of any in the history of Northern California. The west levee broke and the floodwater killed 38 people. Corona was bizarrely affected by the death and destruction and had a mental breakdown, believing everyone had died in the flood and he was living in a land of ghosts. Corona was suffering from a schizophrenic episode. On January 17, Natividad had him committed to DeWitt State Hospital in Auburn, California, where he was diagnosed with “schizophrenic reaction, paranoid type.”  Corona received 23 shock treatments and was pronounced recovered and released 3 months later. At this time, Corona was deported back to Mexico, but soon returned to the U.S. – this time legally, with a green card. At this point, Corona stopped drinking and despite his schizophrenic episodes and reports of a violent temper, he became a hard worker. In 1962, Corona because a licensed labour contractor, in charge of hiring workers to staff local fruit ranches.
Corona was reported to be outwardly masculine and had anger issues towards gay men. Half-brother Natividad – who was gay – owned the “Guadalajara Cafe” in Marysville. In the early morning of February 25, 1970, a man named Jose Romero Raya was brutally attacked with a machete in the bathroom of the cafe. Customers discovered him at 1am, hacked around the head and face, and Natividad called the police. Raya, the victim, filed a lawsuit against Natividad and won a judgement of $250,000, which made Natividad sell his business and return to Mexico in order to avoid paying. In March 1970 Corona was admitted to DeWitt State Hospital for treatment for a second time. A year later he applied for welfare for the first time, as there wasn’t much ranch or farm work available. His application was denied because he had too many assets, including 2 houses and some money in the bank.
In 1981, a farmer that had previous used Corona to hire field workers noticed a fresh hole that had been dug in a peach orchard. The following day, the farmer noticed that the hole had been filled, got suspicious, and called police. When they arrived, they found a man’s body that had been stabbed and hacked. In one grave, deputies found 2 meat receipts with Corona’s signature. In another 2 graves there were 2 crumpled Bank of America deposit slips with Corona’s name and address printed on them. Witnesses later told police that some victims were last seen riding in Corona’s pickup truck. In the early hours of May 26, 1971, police entered Corona’s Yuba City home with a search warrant and arrested him. Evidence indicating his guilty was found and seized. These items included 2 bloodstained knives, a machete, a pistol and blood-stained clothing. There was a work ledger that contained 34 names and dates, including 7 of the known victims. The ledger was referred to as a “death list” by the prosecution, who believed it record the dates the men were killed. Juan Corona had been supplying workers to the ranches where the victims were discovered. He was housing a lot of the men that worked for him in a bunkhouse on the Sullivan Ranch, where most of the victims were found.
Corona was given legal aid and was assigned Roy Van den Heuvel as his public defence. Van den Heuvel hired several psychiatrists to perform evaluations on Corona. The sheriff, Roy Whiteaker said he believed that the prisoner was in no apparent or immediate danger from his fellow townsmen, but Corona was moved to the new and larger county jail in Marysville for “security reasons.” On June 2, Corona was returned to Sutter County for his arraignment, which was closed to both the media and the public. A not guilty plea was entered and a date was set for Corona’s preliminary hearing. By the time the police search ended on June 4, a total of 25 male victims had been found. 4 were unidentified. Whiteaker believed that even more bodes might have been buried in the area. On June 14, Van den Heuvel was replaced by Richard Hawk, a privately retained defence attorney. In return for his representation, an agreement granted Hawk literary and dramatic property rights to Corona’s life story, including the proceedings against him. Under this agreement, Corona chose to waive the attorney-client privilege. Shortly after taking over as Corona’s defence, and before he even saw Corona’s medical record or any of the reports, Hawk decided against having him plead not guilty by reason of insanity and fired the psychiatrists Van den Heuvel had hired. Corona began to complain of chest pain whilst in his cell in Yuba City on June 18 and was taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with having had a mild heart attack. The grand jury returned a 25-count murder indictment against Corona on July 12. In early August, Corona was again hospitalised after complaining of chest pain, saying he had been unable to sleep because of it.
It was more than a year between the discovery of the murders and Corona’s case coming to trial. The California Supreme Court voided the death penalty in the state on February 18, 1972, ruling it unconstitutional, cruel and unusual, so Corona’s case would not be a capital one. Hawk secured a change of venue from Sutter County to Solano County. The trial began on September 11, 1972 at the Fairfield courthouse, more than an hour away from Yuba City. Jury selection took several weeks, and the trial itself took 3 months. Although Corona denied culpability, he wasn’t called to the stand to testify on his own behalf and no witnesses for the defence were called. The jury deliberated for 45 hours and on January 18, 1973, returned a verdict finding Corona guilty of first degree murder on all 25 counts. Judge Richard Patton sentenced Corona to 25 terms of life imprisonment, to run consecutively, without the possibility of parole. Despite so many consecutive terms, the Department of Corrections said that Corona would be eligible for parole in 7 years, due to section 669 of the penal code which mandates that when a crime is punished by life imprisonment, with or without the possibility of parole, then all other convictions shall be merged and run concurrently. Corona was first incarcerated at Vacaville’s California Medical Facility, 9 miles from Fairfield owing to the heart irregularities he had experienced. On December 6, 1973, Corona was stabbed 32 times in his cell because he had bumped into another inmate in the corridor and hadn’t said “excuse me.” Of the 5 men questions about the incident, including the 1 involved in the bumping incident, 1 identified as the man’s sexual partner and 3 inmates that were identified as friends of the partner, 4 were charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Juan Corona was transferred to the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad, California. In early January 1974, Corona’s wife Gloria filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce was granted on July 30.
On May 18, 1978, the California Court of Appeals overturned Corona’s conviction, granting a petition filed by defence attorney Terence Hallinan, who claimed that Corona’s original legal team were incompetent. They hadn’t put forward schizophrenia as a mitigating factor or pleaded the insanity defence. A new trial was ordered and began on February 22, 1982, in Hayward, California. Corona’s defence claimed that the real murderer of the ranch workers was likely to be Natividad Corona, a known homosexual who was accused of attacking Romero Raya at his cafe in Marysville, and who had fled back to Mexico after losing a lawsuit against Raya. Natividad had died 8 years earlier in Guadalajara. The time, more than 50 defence witnesses were called to the stand by Terence Hallinan. Corona was called in his own defence, and was asked only 2 questions, through an interpreter, taking only 2 minutes: “Do you understand the state has accused you of killing 25 men?” “Yes.” “Did you have anything to do with killing those men?” “No.” Hallinan then turned Coroner over to prosecutor Ronald Fahey for cross-examination. The startled prosecution attorneys asked for a brief recess to prepare some of the more than 600 exhibits for their cross. Later, Fahey questioned Corona about various vehicles he used at the ranch where he worked and where he lived, in which some weapons had been discovered. The trial lasted 7 months and Corona was again convicted of the 25 murders on September 23, 1982 and returned to prison after his strategy of trying to persuade the jury – who deliberated for 54 hours over a 2 week period – of his innocence had failed. Afterward, the foreman of the jury told media that the most incriminating evidence against Corona was his work ledger, for which Corona himself had “no reasonable explanation.” He said the jury dismissed the defence’s argument that Natividad committed the murders. “He wasn’t in Marysville enough to have committed the bulk of the killings”, he said.
Juan Corona was transferred from CTF at Soledad to Corcoran State Prison, California, in 1992, where he is currently serving a life sentence in the Sensitive Needs Yard. He has been denied parole 8 times, most recently in November 2016. He will be eligible for parole again in 2021, when he will be around 87 years old.

hi, sorry to disturb you, but can you tell me where the office for ATHENA CHO is? y’know, SHE’S the TWENTY-THREE YEAR OLD CISFEMALE FASHION DESIGN ASSISTANT here at Masters? kinda’ looks like JENNIE KIM if you squint? one of the guys over at I.T. said SHE is PASSIONATE and PROMPT but ARROGANT and OPINIONATED, does that ring a bell? i have HER coffee order right here.
hey guys ! i’m tay & it’s so nice to finally be able to post this, wow ! i have brought my child athena & i am so excited to rp with y’all. i have dropped a little bit about her below if you would like to read. also, if you would like to plot pls click that little heart & i will fly to you. i am currently getting my ass beat by online school, but that is also bc i am procrastinating like a whole bitch. anyways enough rambling. enjoy the mess under the cut lmao.
Tumblr media
trigger warming: mentions of slight homophobia !
NAME: nayoung cho. ( goes by her english name ‘ athena ‘ ) GENDER: cisfemale. PRONOUNS: she, her. AGE: twenty-three ( 23 ). BIRTHDAY: 29th october. ZODIAC: scorpio. BIRTHPLACE: changwon, south korea. HOMETOWN: fairfield, connecticut. CURRENT RESIDENCE: new york city, new york. ETHNICITY: south korean. ORIENTATION: bisexual OCCUPATION: fashion design assistant. LANGUAGES SPOKEN: korean & english.
background & info !
athena was born in changwon, korea and immediately adopted at birth.
she was adopted by two women named jiyeon cho & danielle park. jiyeon comes from an affluent family that is in the country club business. so, her family owns a couple of country clubs in the new england area. she was once married before and danielle was her divorce attorney at the time. during the brutal trials, danielle helped jiyeon not get sucked dry by her ex-husband & then their romance began.
their families were not supportive at first, but after a couple of years of it not being a phase, they have grown to accept their relationship.
when athena was adopted, she practically had her whole life set up for her. she was going to go to the best schools, only befriend people of her class ( her family was def’ classist as fuck ), do activities that would look good on college applications, and in the end she was going to go into a career that would carry on the cho name.
athena never really felt the pressure to be the best. she felt like things came naturally to her. even when she struggled with things, her parents would just encourage her instead of push her.
the relationship she had with her moms was super healthy & she could literally go to them for anything. they were like her best friends.
the only problems she really faced were the comments that people would give her about having two moms. fairfield wasn’t the most open city, so they would def get stares and comments. sometimes it would get to a young athena bc she obviously didn’t see anything wrong with it. it would make her angry & would cause her to lash out here and there.
her moms would always reassure her that all that matter was that they loved each other and nobody was going to stop that. they kind of taught her to ignore things & that soon turned to her growing tough skin.
so as she started to grow older, she started to grow a lot more guarded. her nose would stay high in the air & she felt as though majority of people were not worth her time.
you could classify her as a mean girl in high school, but she wasn’t someone that would pester people. she was just rich & pretty & knew how to use that to her advantage.
this was when she threw herself into fashion. looking at different designers in magazines & making outfits out of clippings was enjoyable to her. she loved art as well & just seeing what she could create was always enjoyable to her.
while she was in college at columbia, she was an intern at elle magazine during her senior year. she met a couple of people that had connections & got her an interview at master’s. this was finally something that she got without her moms’ co-sign.
even though working for vogue was her dream job, she settled for master’s bc she felt like she could build her way up into what she actually wanted to do.

Why You Need A Divorce Lawyer In Connecticut
Why do I have to go through a Court to get a divorce in Connecticut?
Getting sued for divorce is not the same sort of litigation as being sued for a property issue for example, or by the state in criminal court. Because legal marriage confers certain important rights – rights to real property, tax implications, inheritance, custody/support, and others – court intervention, consideration, and review of final terms is required when dividing the marital estate.
Tumblr media
Connecticut is a “no-fault” divorce state, which means that persons seeking a divorce are not required to prove any element of a fault ground to be granted a divorce. However, fault can and often does come into play when dividing the marital estate.
Even when divorces are uncontested, the state has an interest in ensuring that one party does not take unfair advantage of the other, especially when issues of child abuse, asset destruction or theft, arise. The state also has an interest in ensuring that the children of divorcing couples are properly provided for, e.g., that housing, schooling, healthcare, college, and emotional support are adequate and appropriate to the child’s needs.
Divorce matters can often be complicated. Whether you are the plaintiff or the defendant, you are well-advised to seek competent legal representation in a divorce proceeding. Many parties find themselves blindsided by scurrilous accusations of wrongdoing by their spouse, or during discovery find that financial or personal information is not as they thought, or sometimes a vindictive spouse simply takes advantage of a non-moneyed spouse with no competent legal representation. When you need a lawyer for a divorce or child custody matter in New Haven or Fairfield County, contact us to schedule your free consultation.

The 1846 Clinton Gilbert House - 12 West 10th Street
The addition of the fourth floor is evidenced in the change of brick color.
In 1845 attorney Augustus W. Clason, Jr. began construction on an upscale brick-faced house at No. 58 West 10th Street (until 1870's 10th Street addresses began at Sixth Avenue.  The house would then be renumbered No. 12.).   The residence, completed the following year, outdid most of its imposing neighbors through its exceptional 32-foot width.
Originally three stories tall, it sat above a brownstone clad English basement.  The floor-to-ceiling parlor floor windows sprouted exceptionally fine cast iron balconies, their delicate design incorporating stylized plant forms.  A lacy fringe ran along the bottom, dripping acorns.
Clason erected the house as an investment.  It was purchased by banker and importer Clinton Gilbert and his wife, the former Mary Stokes.  Born in 1816 near Washington Square, Gilbert was the son of silversmith George W. Gilbert (reputedly the first silversmith in New York City).   He and Mary, who were married on June 1, 1831, had no children.   They maintained a summer house in New Rochelle, New York.
Mary's widowed mother, Mrs. Thomas Stokes, lived with the couple.  Her grandson, Anson Phelps Stokes, described her in his 1910 Stokes Records as "a woman with delicate hands, fine complexion, large eyes, calm and gentle manners, and pleasant English voice."  She died in the house in 1849.
Clinton Gilbert started his career in the metal importing business, forming Stokes & Gilbert with brothers Benaiah and Henry Stokes, two of his wife's brothers.  By now his many titles included president of the Greenwich Savings Bank, a trustee of the Corporation of Greenwood Cemetery, and a partner in The Broadway Railroad.
It was most likely Gilbert's busy schedule that prompted him to skip grand jury duty on January 15, 1862.  The judge was not pleased.  The New York Times reported "The Grand Jury reported to the Court that they were unable to attend to business owing to the absence, without excuse, of several of their members."  Gilbert was fined $25--about $630 today.
Mary Stokes Gilbert suffered "paralysis of the throat" in her latter years, making her unable to speak.  Anson Phelps Stokes recalled that "On account of his wife's health, he afterward moved to a quieter part of Fifth Avenue."  She died on Tuesday, April 4, 1865.
Gilbert did not give up ownership of No. 12, and, in fact, by now owned No. 14 and No 20 West 10th Street.  An advertisement in The New York Herald in 1875 offered "To Let--Extra wide house, handsomely furnished, No. 12 West Tenth street; rent reasonable to good tenant."
Gilbert would die in No. 20 West 10th Street on November 29, 1891 at the age of 84.  The Rhodes' Journal of Banking noted "The greater part of his life was spent within a stone's throw of the house where he was born, and he died at his home in 10th street not far from the same place."
Before his death No. 12 had become home to Frederick Esler, head of the streetcar firm Metropolic Contract Company, and his wife.  The couple moved among polite society, rubbing shoulders with other wealthy visitors at fashionable resorts.  On October 14, 1887, for instance, The Evening World reported "Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Esler, who have been spending the summer at Seabright and Bar Harbor, have returned to their home at No. 12 West Tenth street."  A month later the newspaper noted "Miss Elanor Winslow will be entertained at luncheon on Thursday by Mrs. Frederick Esler, of 12 West Tenth street."
Around 1892 Dr. Walter Vought, a bachelor, purchased the house.  He would not enjoy it for long.  Vought selflessly treated patients suffering the worst of contagious diseases.  That year he was in charge of the Quarantine Station at Fire Island during a cholera epidemic.  On September 25, 1893 The New York Times reported that he "died at 11 o'clock yesterday morning in the New-York Hospital of typhoid fever, which disease he contracted while attending a little child about ten days ago."
In May 1894 the doctor's estate sold the property to Robert J. Fox for $31,000--about $911,000 today.  The sale triggered a rapid-fire turnover of ownership, ending with esteemed architect Bruce Price.  Before the family moved in Price made some substantial changes.
A full floor with a simple paneled cornice was added, the parlor windows were removed and replaced by a sizable copper-clad rounded bay, and the Greek Revival style entrance was changed to neo-Classical.
The double entrace doors with their wonderfully-eccentric brasses were Price's design.  photo via Sotheby's.com
He and his wife, the former Josephine Lee, had two children, including Emily, recently married to Edwin Main Post.  She would become a successful author of articles on architecture and interior design, five novels and serials in popular magazines like Harper's Weekly.   Her greatest fame came through her books on etiquette.
This 1910 photograph shows that Price's redesigned stoop originally had no railings.  from Stokes Records, 1910 (copyright expired)
Bruce Price was among the preeminent architects of his day.  Among his works were the cathedral in Savannah, Georgia, the Lee Memorial Church in Lexington, Virginia, and the cottages and clubhouse at Tuxedo Park (where the Prices had their summer home).  So when rumors circulated that the largest hotel in the world--backed by "Vanderbilt interests"--would cover the entire block between Park and Madison Avenues and 41st to 42nd Streets, reporters went to No. 12 West 10th Street to verify the story.
On the night of December 15, 1897 he opened his door to a New-York Tribune journalist.  The reporter wrote "Mr. Price stated explicitly that so far as he knew there was no such project in contemplation."  However, he would not turn down the job.  "'I should be only too happy,' he said, 'to be commissioned to draw up plans for a monster hotel.'"
Price's niece, Sadie Price Pell, divorced her wealthy insurance broker husband, Archie H. Pell, in Saratoga in the summer of 1902.  The daughter of Price's brother, Benjamin, she soon announced her intentions to marry Dr. Percy R. Turnure.  Following their marriage in the Church of the Ascension on Fifth Avenue, a reception was held in the 10th Street house.
Bruce and Josephine were traveling in Paris on May 29, 1903 when the architect died at the age of 57.   In May 1906 Charles Buchanan purchased No, 12; who resold it by 1914 to Felix Lamond.
Lamond was a renowned organist.  Not only was he organist of fashionable Trinity Chapel, he was the director of the Trinity School of Church Music, a training school for organists, choirmasters and choristers.  Additionally, he was one of the organizers of the New York Oratorio Society.
The Lamonds' daughter, Marjorie, was educated both in New York and in Europe,  She had been introduced to society in 1912 and was traveling with her parents in Europe on August 1, 1914 when her engagement to Henry Fairfield Osborn, Jr. was announced.
The family did not return to New York for the wedding; instead the groom and his family (described by The Sun as "one of the most prominent families in the city") went to London.  The original plans were for a Paris wedding, but, as explained by The New York Times on September 9, 1914 "when the war began it was decided to wait until the party reached London."  The destination wedding, held in Westminster Abbey, was attended by prominent New Yorkers like Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Morgan.
Shortly after Marjorie's wedding No. 12 West 10th Street became to Henry Wood Flournoy.  His wife's niece, Alice Gertrude Gordon (who often went by her middle name), lived in Washington; but the couple kept a room available for her visits to New York.  The arrangement would draw the house into the history books.
When Gertrude's father, General J. J. Gordon died, he left her what The Evening World termed "a large fortune."  Gertrude's best friend was the widowed Edith Bolling Galt.  The two were virtually inseparable, seen at entertainments and the theater together both in New York and Washington.  Gertrude's prominence in Washington society was evidenced on May 6, 1914 when The New York Times reported "President Wilson, who frequently seeks relaxation after an arduous day at one of the local theatres, varied his custom to-night by attending the circus, accompanied by Miss Margaret Wilson, Miss Helen Woodrow Bones, Miss Gertrude Gordon, and Dr. Cary T. Grayson."
In the fall of 1915 both Gertrude and Edith Galt were staying in the Flournoy house.  On November 28 a prestigious caller arrived.  The New-York Tribune reported "Woodrow Wilson set down his Presidential burden last night on the door-mat of an unpretentious red brick house in West Tenth Street, Just off the avenue.
"The door opened to his ring and closed behind him--and then for more than two hours, while secret service men, detectives, reporters and plain hoi polloi awaited the reappearance of the President, Woodrow Wilson, the human being, the accepted suitor, enjoyed the companionship of the woman who is to become his wife."  Reportedly, it was in the Flournoy home that the President had recently proposed marriage to Mrs. Galt.
No. 12 became the focus of press attention.  On November 30 The Times reported "Yesterday was a busy day for Mrs. Norman Galt, the fiancee of President Wilson.  From early morning until sundown she kept appointments with her dressmakers, furriers, and milliners...Mrs. Galt left the home of her friend, Miss Gertrude Gordon, at 12 West Tenth Street, about 9 o'clock."
Despite nasty rumors that the President and his fiancée had murdered his wife, Ellen, the couple was married on December 18, 1915.  But the presidential couple would return to No. 12 West 10th Street at least one more time.
The following year, on May 24, Gertrude married White House physician, Dr. Cary T. Grayson in St. George's Chapel.  The First Lady stood by the bride's side and held her bouquet.  Witnessing the ceremony with the President, were Secretary of the Treasury, William Gibbs McAdoo, and his wife.  Outside around 300 people gathered in the park to get a glimpse of the distinguished persons entering and leaving the church.  Three years later The Sun mentioned "It was very much of a White House wedding, even though the ceremony was performed in New York."
Afterwards a reception was held at No. 12 West 10th Street.  The wedding cake was a gift of the Wilsons, who attended the "informal reception."  The Times noted "Gifts were received by Dr. Grayson and his bride from the President and Mrs. Wilson, members of the Cabinet, Senators, Representatives, many Government officials and employees at the White House."
Following the Flournoy's leaving, around 1919, the house was converted to two residences, the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert S. Houston and Mrs. and Mrs. William Ransom Barbour.  The Houstons remained at least through 1930; by which time Harris Baldwin Fisher and his family had moved into the former Barbour apartment.
In 1928 the lower level was converted to the Poetry House.  On June 8 that year The New York Times remarked "Pegasus went in dinner jacket and gleaming white shirt to the formal opening last evening of Poetry House, a meeting place for poets and all lovers of literature, at 12 East Tenth Street."
A renovation in 1958 resulted in two apartments in the basement, where Poetry House had once been, one on the first floor, and two each on the upper floors.  Among its more celebrated residents was Isabel Lydia Whitney, the renowned water colorist and muralist.  Upon her death in her apartment on February 1962 The Times called her "the first woman in America to stand on a scaffold or ladder and do fresco painting."  Among her works was the fresco for the 1925 wing of the Brooklyn Museum.
No. 12 West 10th Street never truly declined.  When cosmetics creative directors Richard Ferretti and James Gager sold their 2,200-square-foot apartment in December 2015, it commanded a price of $5.75 million.

And while most of the interior details have been removed over the decades, some, like the entrance staircase, survive.  Outside the 1890's remodeling by Bruce Price remains little changed.

Fotis Dulos charged with the murder of his estranged wife Jennifer Farber Dulos
By DAVE ALTIMARI, ELIZA FAWCETT  and NICHOLAS RONDINONE | Published Jan 07, 2020 11:29 AM ET |Hartford Courant | Posted Jan. 07, 2020
Police on Tuesday took Fotis Dulos into custody and charged him with the murder of his estranged wife Jennifer Farber Dulos despite being unable to find her body since she went missing in May.
Dulos is being held on a $6 million bond, his attorney, Norm Pattis, said. Dulos was charged with capital felony murder, murder and kidnapping.
“I haven’t seen the warrant yet but it is my understanding that Mr. Dulos was just arrested and was charged with the crime of murder as to his wife, Jennifer Dulos. It is my understanding ... that arrests are simultaneously taking place and that two other individuals are being arrested," Pattis said.
The arrest Tuesday capped months of searches by police for Farber Dulos who was last seen dropping off her children at a school in New Canaan on May 24. Authorities have searched woods, ponds, trash plants and houses from New Canaan to Farmington but have been unable to find any trace of the 51-year-old Farber Dulos other than a blood-stained shirt – found in a Hartford trash can - they believe she was wearing the last time she was seen alive.
Police are also expected to arrest Dulos’ former girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, and Kent Mawhinney, his attorney in a civil case, in connection with Farber Dulos’ death, sources said.
State police brought Troconis to Troop G in Bridgeport early Tuesday afternoon and charged her with conspiracy to commit murder. She is being held on a $2 million bond.
Carrie Luft, a friend of Farber Dulos and a spokesperson for the Farber Dulos family, issued a statement Tuesday afternoon.
“Above all we thank the Connecticut State Police and the New Canaan Police Department, as well as the assisting local departments, for their tireless commitment and diligent, painstaking work that have led to these arrests,” the statement said. "Although we are relieved that the wait for these charges is over, for us there is no sense of closure. Nothing can bring Jennifer back. We miss her every day and will forever mourn her loss. We believe the arrest warrants will speak for themselves, and we ask that you please respect our privacy during this time. Thank you.”
Pattis said he pulled up to Dulos’ house at Jefferson Crossing in Farmington at 11 a.m. Tuesday, 10 minutes before a convoy of five unmarked state police cruisers, one with flashing red and blue lights, swept into the residential compound. The state police cars surrounded the front entrance to the house and left after about 15 minutes with a handcuffed Dulos in one of their vehicles.
“Today is a somber day,” Pattis said while standing at the entrance to Jefferson Crossing after the vehicles had departed. “I’m not surprised that the state decided to bring the charge. I’ll be surprised if they can win it. Mr. Dulos contends that he was not involved and I don’t think the evidence will show that he was.”
He said that it was his understanding that the court put a $6 million bond on Dulos with the condition that he cannot post it until after he is arraigned.
Pattis would not say what he had discussed with Dulos in the 10 minutes before state police arrived, but he told reporters.
“You can imagine what it’s like to say to someone, prepare for the bottom to fall out of your world. In a paradoxical way, we welcome this fight because we think we will win it. In fact, we’re confident we will. And now we won’t have to speculate about what it looks like any longer,” Pattis said.
Dulos, 52, a Farmington luxury home builder, has been arrested twice and charged with tampering with evidence and hindering prosecution in connection with the disappearance of Farber Dulos. He has been free on two, separate $500,000 bonds.
Dulos has maintained he had nothing to do with his wife’s disappearance and Pattis has suggested a variety of theories of what happened to her from a scenario similar to author Gillian Flynn’s 2012 novel “Gone Girl” in which a wife fakes her disappearance to frame her husband for murder, to a “revenge suicide” theory speculating that she killed herself and made it look like Dulos was involved to keep their children away from him.
The couple has been going through a long, bitter divorce since June 2017 with a judge severely limiting Dulos’ access to his five children over the past year.
Dulos was first arrested in early June. Police in court documents said surveillance video from the Albany Avenue area in Hartford showed Dulos dumping two black trash bags into garbage cans on that street. The cameras also showed him putting a FedEx package into a storm drain right in front of Troconis, his girlfriend at the time, police said.
Police later retrieved the FedEx package which had an old license plate belonging to a car Dulos no longer owned in it. They have never explained what if any connection the old license plate has to the case.
State police detectives also recovered a shirt with blood on it that they believed Farber Dulos was wearing the day she disappeared, a bloody mop and some towels from the trash. DNA testing revealed the blood on those items belonged to Farber Dulos.
Two days after the trash bags were dumped on Albany Avenue, a homeless man found one of them and inside he said he found a bloody pillow and a knife that he later sold for $5 for a rock of crack cocaine to a man named Fudge.
Fudge said he later sold the knife to a man for $10 to buy food. He was unable to identify the man to police and the knife has never been found.
Michelle Troconis, who was referred to as the “Argentinian paramour” in court papers by Farber Dulos’ divorce attorney, also has been arrested twice on tampering with evidence charges. She is free on a $500,000 bond and a $150,000 bond, respectively.
Troconis has told state police in multiple interviews that she doesn’t know where Farber Dulos’ body is located.
The bond after her second arrest in September was lower because she has cooperated with state police detectives. She recently also moved her remaining belongings from the Farmington home she shared with Dulos. She now lives in Avon.
It was after the second arrests that Norwalk/Stamford State’s Attorney Richard Colangelo released a 43-page detailed arrest warrant affidavit that laid out the case against Dulos.
State police obtained video surveillance from gas stations, home security systems and New Canaan school buses to document the trail of a red Toyota truck as it drove from Farmington to New Canaan earlier on the morning of May 24.
The truck belonged to Pawel Gumienny, an employee of Dulos’ home building company, The Fore Group Inc., who had let Dulos use it while he drove Dulos’ black Ford Raptor to a job site in New Canaan. Gumienny is expected to be a key witness for the prosecution.
The arrest warrant affidavit said the truck is first seen on a gas station surveillance camera along the Merritt Parkway in Fairfield at 6:36 a.m that morning. The truck is captured parked on Lapham Road in New Canaan at 7:40 a.m. by a school bus camera. The truck is parked less than 100 feet from where Farber Dulos’ white Chevy Suburban was found later that same night.
Police believe that Dulos left his truck there and went to his estranged wife’s home about three miles away and waited for her to return from bringing the children to school. The white Suburban can be seen returning to her Welles Lane home at 8:05 a.m.
It is seen leaving at 10:24 a.m. only this time police allege Dulos was driving it and the body of his wife was inside of it. They theorize that he was lying in wait for her in the garage and attacked her there, court documents said.
Mawhinney has been Dulos’ attorney in a civil lawsuit filed by Gloria Farber, Farber Dulos’ mother, She currently has custody of the couple’s five children, who range in age from 8 to 13, and include two sets of twins. Mawhinney is a key witness in the events of May 24 as he was supposed to meet with Dulos at his Jefferson Court home at 9 a.m. to discuss the civil case.
Sources have said Mawhinney hasn’t verified that meeting occurred, although Troconis has told state police that she did see Mawhinney at the house that morning but not Dulos. Sources said Mawhinney’s vehicle is seen on surveillance cameras coming and going from the house that day.
Mawhinney is facing his own legal troubles. His estranged wife, whom he is divorcing, has obtained a protective order that bars him from contacting her. He also faces an allegation of sexual assault.
A few days before Farber Dulos disappeared, Dulos contacted Mawhinney’s wife and told her that her husband wanted to get back together, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Mawhinney was subsequently charged with violating a protective order.
The woman initially met with Dulos at Max’s Oyster Bar in West Hartford on May 19, but after telling Dulos she would not meet with Mawhinney unless their lawyers were present, Dulos abruptly paid the bill and left, according to the warrant for Mawhinney’s arrest. On May 20, Dulos called the wife again, telling her Mawhinney was willing to meet with their lawyers present.
On May 21, Dulos called again to set up a meeting, but the woman told him she had talked to her lawyer and did not want to have any contact with her husband, the arrest warrant affidavit says.
Courant staff reporters Amanda Blanco and Steven Goode contributed to this report.

Divorce Court Is A Puzzle
Going through a divorce is a difficult process to navigate. It can feel like every word or action from the other side is calculated to harm your dignity, your fortune, and your sense of belonging in your community of friends and family. In making their case to the judge, many advocates seize on to put into record your darkest secrets, all the while painting a portrait of you as an unfit parent, an unscrupulous businessperson, a liar, cheater, disengaged lover, lazy sponge or whatever other insulting characterization they determine might sway the judge into granting their inequitable and exaggerated demands.
Had Dante gone into hell without Virgil, he might not have made it out in one piece. Similarly, while divorce court can feel like hell, it can be managed well when you have adequate representation despite the onslaught of obstacles your angry spouse and his/her counsel may try to place in your path. You need a lawyer who is thorough in her research and strategy, and whose exhaustive knowledge of the law and procedure enables you to avoid and/or conquer all obstacles designed to harm you.
At its core the legal process is organized to give both sides a fair outcome – getting there however takes strategy and perseverance. A proactive legal strategy focuses on the weaknesses and misdeeds of the opposing party, forthrightly providing evidence to correct inaccurate claims made against you, while highlighting your positive attributes and contributions to the marital estate.
Divorce court is not a forum where a party should “wing it” as the saying “he who represents himself has a fool for a client” is ever present here. We often hold consults with parties who represented themselves during their divorce and now post-judgment express regret over terms they settled on, many of which may not be modifiable and/or may require intensive and costly post-judgment litigation to correct.  Had those parties been represented by counsel during their divorce, their initial outcomes could have been better suited toward their ultimate goals.

Many of our litigious opponents back off from their unreasonable positions and unnecessarily aggressive tactics once they see the formidable case strategies developed for our clients.  Our methods are designed to place our client’s on the best possible footing in furtherance of attaining global resolution and/or preparing a matter for trial.
Hirsch Legal, LLC do our utmost to ensure that our clients maintain a solid financial position post-divorce when dividing the marital estate; that custody and visitation arrangements are fair and reasonable and in the best interests of the minor children; and that reputational harm is prevented or minimized to the maximum extent of the law.
