I just found the oldest known diving suit, the old gentleman of Raahe, from the 18th century, possibly of Finnish origin
LOOK AT IT, I WANT ALL OF YOU TO LOOK AT IT
It fills me with emotions there’s no human language words to articulate, it’s so silly, goofy and whimsical and sorta terrifying 🥹

With the creation of the homunculi, the possibilities were endless. The Academy of Veritas Mundus had unlocked the ability to create artificial life from mere mortal fluids. Not only could a variety of humors be used to create specialized entities, but it seemed that the living beings themselves were malleable enough that alterations could be made to their loose flesh. Even without adding potent fluids like Eitr or Pwdre Ser, the form of the homunculus could be grafted and shaped in a myriad of ways. Though these entities were born from the Alchemists, other arms of the Academy quickly saw the potential and were eager to collaborate.
While almost every arm would eventually try its hand at homunculi, there was no group more excited with the possibilities than the Aquanauts. They are the arm of the Academy that is tasked with research of the oceans and the many things that live within its depths. Though very passionate for their work, like any other, the obstacles to their research were obvious and many. Aquanauts would always be the ones to scoff at the complaints of Antiquaries or Alchemists when bemoaning a lack of samples or difficult work conditions. "Your specimens are just laying there in the dirt, waiting for you to stroll over and pick them up. Try getting them from twenty thousand leagues below and then you can whine." As one can imagine, studying the sea and its many underwater secrets is no easy task. Ocean conditions alone make work unreliable and risky, but even then that is ignoring the fact that your research subject is still far below you. For the longest time, Aquanauts had to rely on washed up specimens or strange catches hauled up in nets to get a picture of what lay below. Efforts continue in making gear and vessels that can go below the ocean's surface, with some more successful than others. Sturdy suits and life support systems have been developed, but the depth those can dive at barely scratch the surface. Not to mention it is exceedingly expensive. Woe to the human form that fares so poorly in these aquatic conditions. But what of these homunculi..?
The goal of the Aquanauts in their work with the Alchemists was to create a type of homunculi that could survive in the deep. Specialized sample collectors who could do what the Aquanauts themselves currently could not. If they could create something like this, it would be a great boon to their field. Fishermen's nets and random beach carcasses were wildly unreliable and random in their offerings. Not to mention the reputation of the Academy and superstitions of seafolk making these interactions more difficult to arrange. So thus the two arms got to work, seeking to create a homunculus that could withstand the dark waters below. As the results started to be born, alterations to the formulas were made, and eventually it was realized that physical changes would be needed as well. Sturdy skins could be grown, but hardened plates or specialized eye lenses were better done through surgery. Those versed in body modification came onto the project, and the homunculi started to take more promising forms. Through great effort, this collaboration became a resounding success. Not only were they able to create an entity to work in aquatic conditions, but they succeeded in making three types of them.
The Aquanauts and their new homunculi work to this day in unlocking the secrets of the deep. With Academy research vessels, they go out onto the ocean to run experiments and do sample dives. While Alchemists and other Academy arms may have varying degrees of respect and affection for certain homunculi, the Aquanauts appear very fond of all three types. They do seem to care about them, and are not ones for unneeded cruelty or punishment. Some believe this stems from the fact that Aquanauts need their homunculi to return in one piece in order to get their precious samples. Losing one means also losing the valuable haul it had with it, thus Aquanauts do what they can to ensure a safe return. And also being on a ship far from civilization for weeks or months on end will make one far more chummy with what little company they have.
These are the specialized diving homunculi created:
Depthsampler (center) - The simplest and smallest of the three diving homunculi, the Depthsampler has the straightforward job of going down and grabbing samples to haul back up. Though they can breathe underwater and survive below for long periods, their form is not suited for swimming. Rather, a rope is affixed to their head and they sink straight down into the water. They carry collection bottles and bags to stuff samples into, then give the line a tug when they are ready to go back up. The rope is then pulled back in to bring them back to the ship. Depthsamplers are on the same level as the first homunculi when it comes to intelligence, being quite child-like. This doesn't usually cause issues since their job is as simple as "grab what looks good," though they can get distracted. Though they have a thicker hide compared to other homunculi, they are still relatively defenseless, thus the reason the Aquanauts do not leave them down below for long. If any dangerous creatures are spotted, these homunculi are trained to immediately abort the mission and signal to be pulled back up. Dealing with aggressive fish is someone else's job.
Spearfisher (left) - The diving homunculus more humanoid in shape, which fits since they are similar to the refined homunculi. Smarter, faster and more adept to their surroundings, they are tasked in dealing with more "difficult" samples. They too are sent down below on a line, but they can be left to their own devices for far longer. Often called "twintails," these homunculi have long sensory tentacles on their heads that allow them to be fully aware of their surroundings. Armed with a frozen Tear spear, they are tasked with catching particular specimens for study. The freezing properties of their weapon preserves the slain fish, chilling them so they may stay fresh until they can be hauled back aboard. Since Spearfishers can defend themselves and are better at traveling in the deep, they are allowed to explore a bit more of their surroundings and follow interesting leads. During their off time, when not down below, the Spearfishers will "chat" with their own kind, sharing stories of what they have encountered. Depthsamplers love to hear these tales and always gather to listen. Between Spearfishers, it appears that even homunculi are not immune to a fisherman's boast, as they often compete to figure out who brought in the biggest catch, with actual sizes varying depending on who you ask.
Hullbreaker (right) - The largest and sturdiest of the diving homunculi, these juggernauts are full on explorers of the underwater world. When the others spot wrecks or structures of interest, the Hullbreaker is sent below to investigate. They carry tools to break into wherever they want, and have raw strength to back it all up. They are often used to plunder shipwrecks or retrieve lost equipment, but in some cases they may be utilized to remove threats that are making the area dangerous for sampling. Large dangerous fish that keep attacking the divers or ship may have this brute sent down to deal with them. Heavy armor makes them difficult to wound, and they possess Academy weapons designed for underwater combat. Their torsos are capable of rotating a complete 360, which means they can fight from any angle. Their fleshy limbs may seem like weakpoints, but these appendages are capable of regenerating themselves if lost. When an arm or leg gets ripped off, the spikes on their joints cinch the wound shut to avoid loss of fluid. New humors are flushed into the appendage, quickly reforming a new limb that will erupt from the sealed injury. With armor, weapons and regeneration, the Hullbreaker is well designed for life underwater, to the point where they may be left down there for some time.
In some cases, especially when weather or hostile forces makes hanging on the ocean too risky, the Aquanauts may deploy Hullbreakers down below and then leave. These homunculi will be tasked with exploring and securing samples of interest for days on end. A rendezvous point may be set for later retrieval, or the entity may be told to simply "walk back to shore" if it is close enough. With them spending time down below without supervision or an Aquanaut vessel nearby, seafolk get suspicious about this homunculus. They are prone for blaming these beings for scaring off fish, sabotaging nets or outright stealing catches. Them plundering shipwrecks earns accusations of them disturbing the dead and stealing heirlooms that should go to families. It doesn't help that these Hullbreakers at times emerge from the surf without warning, terrifying locals when these armored hulks appear. Since they are aligned with the Academy and are told to protect samples at all costs, they may not be too nice to shouting strangers who get too close. The Aquanauts constantly tell people to stay away and leave them alone, as that will ensure no one gets hurt. But obviously, who ever listens to that advice?
