@DenverComicCon lived up to the hype and welcomed #AReasontoSmile with open arms. 20 books are now in the hands of children and adults alike and I come back to New York very happy and refreshed. Not bad for a 3 day show. These are just some of the gracious people who found their smile at #comiccon. The show always felt like it was full of people so it was nice to be able to talk to so many people about this positive book that we all need in our lives in one way, shape, or form. I'll be at #GardenStateComicCon in a few weeks. The two shows are pretty similar in that they both started out small and are getting larger every year. Hopefully I'll see some of you there! #childrensbook #graphicnovel #comicbook #comic #independentcomic #indiecomic #undergroundcomic #Kickstarter #kickstarterfunded #crowdfunded #selfpublished #hustling #travelingsalesman #familyfun #familyfriendly #bookstagram #booksforadults #booksforkids #reading #readtoyourchildren #readingisfundamental #readingrainbow #diversity #diversityinliterature #diversityinreading #diversityincomics

Replica by Jenna Black (Tor Teen, Macmillan, ISBN: 0765333716)
Jenna Black’s Replica was released last year, rendering this not the timeliest of reviews, but due to the sequel’s imminent release, I wanted to gush about how much I loved this book. We’re hosting a YA panel featuring Ms. Black, along with Kristen Simmons and Mindee Arnett, on March 18th.
This book snuck up on me. I had been expecting your usual dystopia tropes: a laconic female protagonist with enhanced physical abilities, torn away from her family and friends. Maybe a love triangle thrown in for good measure. If she has a best friend, he or she is most likely pining away for love of her. Suffice it to say, I was wrong.
Replica centers on Nate and Nadia, two best friends who are, as fate would have it, betrothed. Both of them are nervous at this prospect—Nadia because Nate has a tendency to be manipulative and pushy, and Nate because he isn’t interested in girls at all. A dull society party they attend together climaxes in Nadia storming off, and then later that night, Nate getting killed. Whoops.
But no fear, because Nate has recently had a memory back up, and is all fresh and Replicated by his father’s scientists. His father is convinced that Nate’s valet has killed him and run off, but Nate is absolutely certain that isn’t true, because his valet also happens to be the love of his life. Of course, he can’t tell his father this, because the elite class of this Corporate State has extremely traditional values—think Victorian sensibilities, but with cameras and microphones always shoved in your face, tabloids and paparazzi dissecting every move you make. Shudder.
I was really pleased to see a gay protagonist, along with an instance in which the hero and heroine aren’t a couple. I also liked how Nadia’s strengths don’t involve climbing trees or shooting people in the face, but rather brilliant political maneuvering and raw nerve. There is one particularly great scene in which she gets very drunk before an interrogation to hide her tells when she’s lying.
Replica goes to some pretty dark places, and I literally couldn’t put it down through the last fifty pages. If I have any criticism, it’s that the world could have stood to be a little more fleshed-out. I’m really looking forward to the possibility of that happening in the sequel, which is due out next month.
