Kiss Prompt - "I really, really want to kiss you right now" - Copia

Copia x GN!Reader - kiss prompt, insecurities, misunderstandings, Copia's surgery, smooching, worship of the white suit.

One and only prompt given to me and for my beloved @writingjourney.

“So we’re definitely keeping all the crotch shots, right?” You ask, flipping the photograph in your hand around so the antipope sitting across the room from you can see it. 

Copia cuts you a look before turning back to the document on his desk. You smirk to yourself, letting out a small huff of a laugh as you look back down to the stacks of photos on the small table you’re using as a workspace in his office. There are a lot of photographs that the immensely talented photographer for the Ghost Project takes for each Ritual, but they tend to…pile up. And you have been given the - frankly blessed - task of looking through photo after photo of Copia during the Prequelle era. From the Pale Tour Named Death to his ascendency as Papa Emeritus IV. 

Your primary task is to separate them into two organized piles. Ditch and keep. From the very vague instructions Sister Imperator gave you, it has something to do with the next tour and a mini museum. As tedious as your task is, you’ve really tried to separate each photo by suit. Black, red, and white, as well as two piles for the black and red cassock. It is so…fascinating to see Copia during a time when you didn’t know him. A time when becoming Papa was a dream he thought would never be realized. A time of facial hair and very attractive sideburns. 

“What happened to your suits, by the way?” You ask Copia, placing another picture in the keep pile which is significantly bigger than the ditch. Copia makes a small noise in the back of his throat, an indication that he’s thinking and that he needs to finish the paragraph he’s reading lest he lose his place. 

He places his finger down and looks in your direction, “In my closet. Toward the back. Getting acquainted with the dust bunnies.” 

“Even the white one?” You say, distraught as you bring your hands to your cheeks. 

Copia raises a brow at your theatrics, leaning forward on his elbow across the expanse of his desk as he regards you with an amused smile. “What has you so concerned, topolino?” His head tilts to the side in that natural curious way of his. 

“I just think that they…,” you pause as you choose your words carefully, eyes pointedly looking away from him. The blush painting your cheeks broadens his smile. “Have a little more wear to them.”

“Eh, well…they were good for, you know, my Cardinal days, but as Papa I have a much better wardrobe, don’t you think?” He pulls at his brocaded vest before adjusting the frilled sleeves at his wrists. 

“Oh, yeah! I’m just saying I really love the Prequelle era! You know it’s my favorite album, and your stage outfits were just so…I mean look at you…Copia?” You pause in your exuberance, one of the photographs in your hand, observing the frown crossing his lips that deepens with every word, made sharper by his face paint. 

His eyes fall to the picture in your hand, brow furrowing. His hand comes up to brush against his bare top lip, fingertips then finding the tip of his nose. His eyes seem to go hazy, pupils falling to pinpricks creating an expanse of green and white that looks through you and not quite at you. “Do you think I made a mistake?” He asks, his voice quiet, reaching you like a pot of scalding water against your skin. You place the photograph down on the desk, your own gaze wide as you look back at him. “Should I not have gotten this…,” he waves his hand around in front of his face. “Eh, facial?” 

“What?” You sound flabbergasted, confused. Concern etched across your features as you try and figure out what may have prompted him to ask such a question. 

“I can regrow the mustache! The sideburns may take a little work…,” Copia trails off as he touches his face again, deep in thought, his eyes dropping to the desktop. 

You close your eyes, cursing yourself for…you’re smarter than this. You know how Copia feels about the surgery. And here you are, gushing over Cardinal Copia when Papa Emeritus IV is in front of you, needing your support when he cannot get it elsewhere. He smiled, big and toothy, the day he returned from his ascension and you called him “Papa” for the first time. He looked grateful, however bruised and swollen, bandages across his nose when you expressed how glad you were that he wouldn’t have to suffer such severe nasal issues anymore. He once called you his strength. It wouldn’t do to fail him now.

“Copia. Just because you got a nose job and shaved doesn’t make you any less beautiful than you are in these photos. It’s still you. You still look like yourself. You’re still the most attractive man I’ve ever seen.” 

Your words seem to echo across his quiet office, and leave a silence in its wake. He’s looking at you again, lips parted, boring a hole into you with passionate and relieved eyes that make your cheeks flush. Copia stands from his desk and smooths his hands down his thighs, moving around the chair to carefully push it in before walking toward your small workspace. You stare up at him, unsure, and he flounders like a fish for a moment, mouth opening and closing.

“I really, really want to kiss you right now,” he finally says. 

You suck in a breath and look down, blinking before meeting his gaze once more. “Please.” 

Copia looks down at the little table piled with photos and promptly tips it over. The photographs go scattering, his former image fluttering to the floor like a cleansing rain, and then he’s on you. Pulling you up from the chair with steady, gloved hands, he draws you into his body, pressing flush against you as he claims your lips like he’s claiming a prize he has waited far too long for. Copia kisses you like a man who found an oasis in the desert, thoroughly licking into your mouth with abandon, capturing every noise you make with lips that nip and suck your bottom lip until it's swollen. He lets you take in a much needed breath only to continue across your jaw and down your neck, growling softly as he sucks a spot into your sensitive skin which he kitten licks before pulling away. 

You stare at each other, chests heaving. His paint is a mess, a slash of gray around his mouth, and you can only imagine what your mouth and neck looks like. Copia smiles, softly chuckling as his eyes rove over your kiss swollen lips. 

“Amore?” He questions softly, taking your hand in his. 

You smile. “I really, really want you to kiss me again.”

Modern!Basim Ibn Ishaq - Valentine's Day headcanons

Basim Ibn Ishaq x GN!Reader

He’s a romantic at heart, so he loves having a good reason to shower you with affection (not that he needs a reason to begin with).

Valentine’s Day with Basim is kind of like any other day, since he’s always trying to woo you. The only difference is that this time he has an excuse to buy you more things than usual.

He’s the type of person who tries to look cool and scoffs when he sees Valentine’s Day merch in every shop, but gives in and buys lots of stuff anyway.

Basim, with 5 bouquets of flowers: “I’m a victim of consumerism.”

I hope you like sweets because he’s going to buy you lots of those. You could go into hibernation and live off of candy if you pleased.

“That box of chocolates you got me was really good.”

“Would you like more?”

“I’m good–”

“Here’s 10 more.”

Truth be told, he enjoys spending time together more than exchanging gifts. Breakfast in bed, a picnic with homemade food and stargazing are some of his personal favorites (you’ll have him wrapped around your finger if you do all three on the same day) (he’ll be all yours for the night).

Anyways–

Yes, he gets changed for the sake of your date (thank God). He ditches those cargo pants and wolf shirt in favor of a more formal attire.

He also cancels all plans for the day. Valentine’s Day is all about you two, and being so sickeningly sweet to each other that Shaun gags at the sight of you. Basim presses kisses on your nape whenever he can, and the Brit can’t help but retch like a cat trying to hairball.

Basim is kind of quiet, so you fill the silence. You’re at a picnic, ranting about one of your interests again when you hear the shutter of a camera, and see Basim pointing his phone at you. He’s snapping pictures of you when you’re not looking and adding them to his folder.

“Apologies, songbird. What were you saying?”

Speaking of photos, he keeps his favorite in his wallet. It’s a Polaroid photo of you snuggled up on the couch as you read. He shows it off to anyone who is willing –or unwilling– to listen.

For the love of God, don’t take him to an art gallery. He’s an art critic with incredibly high standards and will not hold back.

“Is this what people call art these days?”

“It’s just a banana taped to a wall.”

“My thoughts exactly.”

“Sir, please stop ripping the artwork.”

Gives you lots of pet names throughout the day. He usually calls you “my dear”, but when February 14th rolls around, he goes all out. You’re his dear, but also his beloved, his sweetheart, his soul.

He’s always touching you – a hand on your lower back, your fingers laced together, his knuckles caressing your face... He’s like a leech for the next 24 hours.

You spend the evening baking some muffins and watching a movie. You’re sprawled out on the couch, limbs tangled together; and eventually, you become more invested in his touch than whatever bank the characters in the film are trying to rob. Things grow steamy as you kiss in the privacy of your own apartment, with no Abstergo agents barging through your door, and it’s difficult to hold yourself back when you feel his smirk against your lips.

You decide how to end the date. He won’t complain either way👀

Watched a bunch of stuff last night, including the Alita OVA from 1993! I thought it was a lot of fun, the thoughts:

--- It did the "obvious" thing of adapting the romance arc with Yugo of Volume 2 as the core, while blending in the events of Volume 1 as sort of backstory and setup as opposed to their own story. This arc is Alita at her most humanized in the early parts of the manga, and its the plot that centers Zalem as the untouchable overlord city most effectively. Any short adaptation is gonna choose this - part of why James Cameron (lol) did the same thing!

--- Speaking of, the manga does not actually have any particular focus on Alita's eyes, but the anime definitely has more than one shot where it establishes them as thematically special. Given that the James Cameron film is famous for going full CGI on Alita's eyes, and he knows about the property from Guillermo del Toro passing him the OVA as opposed to the manga, I think I can see the chain of events that lead to that (ill-fated?) decision.

Her eyes are pretty amazing in the OVA, so I get it! As my previous reblogs showed lol.

--- I think I can break apart the manga into three "concepts": the setting as cyberpunk dystopia, Alita as a character dealing with identity issues as an amnesiatic combat robot, and shounen fighting & levelling arcs. The OVA heavily focuses on the first part, ditching almost all the shounen stuff - its fight scenes are quick and focus on violence & bodily destruction over strength or "fighting techniques", etc. This is great for me, obviously! But it also, almost accidentally, ditches most of her identity issues? Because its less than an hour long, and needs to do a ton of worldbuilding - including even adding in a new character from Zalem to help with that - and is doing Yugo's entire arc, you really don't have time left for Alita's struggles. Yugo actually gets more "inner depth" than she does! She commits to being a bounty hunter, then after that she is pretty much just In Love while Yugo goes through his detailing of his past and collapse.

I'm not saying it doesn't work, it does as a story. Just interesting for something that is known as very "protagonist associated" to have an OVA where she is barely the protagonist.

--- While no Urotsukidoji or anything, this is another one of those OVAs where its reputation, particularly in the west, is as a hyper-violent, gory OVA? And like so many it really isn't. People get decapitated, don't get me wrong, buts its never lingers on those moments. Instead they serve as tone setters for the crapsack world or just are part of the action sequences.

I think in general the OVA era rarely made horror/gore films the way some other mediums/industries did? There are exceptions of course but in the end anime is trying to do too many other things; beautiful animation, focus on character designs, often being adaptations and so doing the plot of those more complex stories, erotic content for audiences that aren't *that* fetishistic on average, and more. All of these priorities compete for space in comparison to having endless jumpscares and blood splatters. So far my track record for watching the famous "gorefest" or "~crazy~" anime is that every one of them is tamer than the rep suggests, and I believe this medium/genre mismatch is why.

--- The biggest question I have around Alita in general is why there was never any more anime? Its weird, right? Its a famous property from a beloved genre, it had a hollywood film for some crazy reason, things like Ghost in the Shell got multi-season anime after all. Why no feature film remake in the 2000's? Why no 13-cour in the 2010's? I don't have an answer to that yet.

Why the initial OVA was so minimal is at least partly answered by Kishiro here:

MNS: Many fans have wondered, why were only 2 anime OAV episodes produced in 1993? YK: It was based on the plan proposed by the animation production company. It might have been better to turn down the plan and wait for a better adaptation proposal to come up, but back then, I couldn't afford to review the plan coolly. At that time, I was still serializing the work and was so busy that I wasn't ambitious to make it into animation.

Essentially he took the "deal on hand", not offering much, because he didn't have the time, money, or business savvy to work the industry for a better proposal. 100% understandable. I don't think the OVA did too well? I can't find a lot of sales figures, but the comments I see are in the "respectable" range, and it didn't get quick or expansive rereleases over time.

More broadly, and again speculative, I think maybe Alita overall isn't that successful? Like sure Kishiro is still out here releasing more sequel manga to this day somehow, but when I look at the "media mix" its just really sparse. No big video game adaptations - it has a PlayStation game in the 90's - it has like a drama CD and a novelization? No big merch waves or tie-ins. I am betting the big anime production committees just don't think its a hot enough property to sell that great. Wouldn't be a bad idea or anything, but not one you have to do like idk Chainsaw Man.

In the western fandom spaces its quite well known because of the idiosyncrasies of licensing history, the weird James Cameron factor, and I think a general fascination with anime cyberpunk; the west eats up any of the older cyberpunk properties for its aesthetic in a way that can blind people to the reality of that just being a subgenre in Japan at the time. Alita might just be niche enough that it not getting any wider anime adaptations is no grand mystery.

(But I hope to dig into this question more)

I love old portraits and oil paintings from the Romantic, Rococo, Impressionistic and multiple other art eras. For a long time I’ve been wanting my art to emulate them, even though I’m primarily a digital baby. So! Here’s one of my half-arsed attempts. It’s not my best but I wanted to share it. I mean, what’s a better excuse to try and draw old romantic portraits then vampires?

This was based on a portrait of “Humphry Davy” by Sir Thomas Lawrence.

This a portrait of my much beloved vampire, Dr. Vsevolod “Cain” Voronin. Cains interests include ditching his wife, exclusively wearing black & keeping the same career since 1378.

fic #9 is only just under 1000 words right now and very much still in the planning stage, and every fic AFTER that is currently still sitting in the 13k word doc of planning

There are around 30ish chapters that I had planned out a while ago, give or take, so if any of you like that series, I wouldn't stress about it being ditched lol

Also in tlou were two separate one shots that I had written at the start of the year, when the show's first episode came out and I liked both of them but I feel like they're both too ooc to post so I never bothered editing them but 🤷

I'd also planned another mini series for tlou that had four chapters, all sort of centered around silver lake/aftermath/healing but with a littles are known/classification au to it - which I do still like and plan on fixing up at some stage

The Walking Dead

firstly, covering the fics in the Daryl's acting weird series

Always A Losing Game has 2 chapters left - both with a loose plan but not a lot of actual writing finished for them

There was a one shot that was in the works for a bit - something short and sweet from Michonne's perspective during the night that This takes place that I never finished

After the events of Always A Losing Game I don't have any full fics written for the beginning of the Alexandria era (aka season 5b and season 6) just snippets and ideas and concepts that I'd written down that I need to go and sort through and somehow make sense of

after that weird brief section where I have nothing written for some reason lol, there's 8 fics that are all planned/at least partially written in a coherent fic form and ready to be edited all set between the latter half of season 6-season 9

There's also a bunch of ideas and concepts for fics Post Rick set in this series that I need to also sort through

The Dandelions series... If there is literally anyone out there who liked it, I'm so sorry for posting two fics and then never talking about it again. Still love the concept here!! Even if I hate the writing in the fics!! Trying to get the motivation to actually edit the other fics in the series. There's another 5 fics in the series yet to be posted, all kind of written but not edited. One of those fics includes the fix it version of my OWN FIC lol, with a good ending where Alden lives at the end of it, if anyone's interested. I love Alden so much and I think that that love should override how much I hate my own writing here and convince me to finish what I started lmao

The Stubbornness Series, my beloved. My true underdog I feel. I love this series very passionately for someone that typically doesn't like their own writing after like a month of having it posted.

There's another 4 one shots that need to be edited and a fic that needs to be split into 3 parts, I'm still unsure if they'll be chapters or all standalone - tell me what you like reading more lol

It has around 6000 words right now, and I'll be honest I was so close to dropping it and trying to rewrite it (it being the first part of the three) It came out SUPER angsty, even for me, and I felt like I couldn't make any of it work, hence why it didn't get posted on my bday, but maybe I was stressed because I was so busy at the time idk. I need to reread it and see what I can do

WOah, that one came out of nowhere, right? Well what if I told you that I binge watched the 3 captain america movies and this show purely to take notes, and my GOD did I do some serious note taking, last year? The year before, I think? Definitely the year before. So that I could create this story about previous cg!steve L!bucky that was angsty and fun and then turn it gradually into cg!sam?? Would you believe me? Because I honestly don't think I've ever brought it up before lol. Anyway that was something that I did do. And wrote for. And now I have a planned storyline and snippets of writing and absolutely no idea whether or not I should do anything with it

Now the fun miscellaneous fics

There's one rpf (real person fic) that I wrote purely for my own enjoyment and comfort and author projecting needs - written for a show that I can't believe I would ever write agere for but anyway. I loved it, will probably never post it?

There's a couple other misc fics that I'm always on the fence about posting or not so

one of them is also an agere littles are known/classification au of Mission Impossible of all things, since I rewatched the new movie so much and brought back the hyperfixation once again.

There's also another MI fic I wrote that I genuinely really loved and want to post that ISN'T agere??????? What?? From me??

So that's that. Those are the main fics waiting to be edited and fixed up and posted as of right now. These are the ones I plan on not giving up on. If anyone is interested in any of them and want to talk about any of them, I'm always excited to talk about my fics! And always excited to hear if someone likes my fics! Don't be shy!

Overall:

It was interesting and I think the show had a good grasp on characters and relationship dynamics and progression but it didn't burrow in my heart the way it did for many people, esp those who watched while on air. I liked that there were friendships each character had and that they existed outside of just this relationship; even some of the friends existed outside of just being a friend, like Yonnwon was a whole human. The female friends were great, Yoonwon is a treasure and I liked how Aeri was so sweet but so mean sometimes, a very clever city girl type. Also, the tension and cute moments between Jihyun and Jaewon were great, especially in ep 6 and 10.

I know there was stuff with the colours and going in and out of light vs dark and how it represented the characters and I caught almost none of that but I'm sure that would've made the experience better. Also, I listened to a bunch of podcasts discussing this (and still have another one Boys Love Boys Love that's going through it ep by ep) and some of them mentioned that Jihyun's actor apparently has no prior experience and was literally picked up off the street to do screen testing, a la kpop boys.

I think it's a good show that's done well but right now, it's not taking up much brain space and it also didn't make me viscerally feel anything, so it's at the place of good show but i won't be thinking much about it. In the future if I do find myself thinking about the characters or plot or whatever, I'll bump it up the same way I did for Blueming.

The parchment was well preserved under the ash from the catastrophic eruption of Artfexis that happened four centuries ago. Over the years, the tree managed to revive itself, breaking free from the suffocating shell of pumice. Known for their resilience, Fraxiniom Oleaca are remarkable for their ability to thrive in even the most extreme conditions.

When I first brought the scroll back home, I carefully cleaned and archived it, though I did not prioritize its study. Recently, while sorting through my archives, I rediscovered it and finally found the time to examine it properly.

The scroll is inscribed on Lustrasilk and through Chronothaumic Analysis I was able to chrono date it and determine that it was made about six centuries ago. Tied with Aurelmane, the golden threads of a unicorn’s mane, and sealed with the wax insignia of Titania’s royal librarian, the scroll bore the unmistakable weight of ancient power.

The inscription was none other than the incantation of the Weird Sisters:

The first two days yielded little of value; however, today brought forth a remarkable artifact hidden within the ruins of a dilapidated structure. It is a delicate pin, crafted from an iridescent material that shimmers like moonlight, adorned with intricate filigree. This exquisite piece appears to be a royal insignia from the court of Titania herself. Though only a fragment of a once-magnificent pendant, my vision and analysis have helped me piece together its story.

I utilized my Memoromancy Field Analysis Kit to conduct a thorough field analysis, knowing that the environment here would pose challenges compared to my lab. I carefully laid out my portable analysis cloth and arranged the analytical stones around the pendant, allowing me to focus my thoughts and intentions.

As I concluded my analysis, I recognized the pendant's historical significance and prepared to settle in for one last night among the ruins. Tomorrow, I would pack up and begin my journey home.

I think a combo of all of the above: Taylor is a dumb bitch for sure (v affectionate), GAY 🌈🌈🌈 like she did it absolutely does sell in pop and I do think it most likely increased her queer man following substantially (she’s still not as beloved by that community as many other female pop stars) and obvs her queer woman following (which she courted with shit like the lover bestie necklace thingie so that wasn’t accidental), and obvi got misinterpreted to a point because like we all see what we wanna see lol and we all project stuff onto media we see.

I also frankly don’t think Taylor would care if someone said “this is in poor taste” because 1) no one would ever say that to her in person because as I said she’s surrounded by yes men and wtf would Scott, Andrea and Joe know what is and isn’t poor taste in the queer community 2) fwiw Todrick was super on board and I’m sure she was like “ok cool so the gays™️ think this is awesome” so if like idk Cara D was like “this looks like a bi wig r u sure you wanna wear one” Taylor would be like “yeah it’s so cool we’re doing all the flags Todrick loves that idea” and Cara in 2019 would likely be like “mmkay do you have ❄️ here or must I call my guy” lol. She did get pushback on it from media but she wasn’t that online at the time and also did ditch that marketing shortly after so maybe she did realize it was a bit off.

4. comme des garcons: when the balance is just lost...

before i got myself into fashion, i was solely an art geek. i am a particular fan of anything that takes the art community’s obsession with realism and humanity by the arm and throws it into a ditch, namely movements such as suprematism and the war era avant garde in general. therefore i am as well a keen enthusiast of all things cdg... except for when i see them in motion. therein lies my query: why are cdg main line garments so truly awkward to look at?

my thesis: these garments have failed to find a balance between sculpture and human dress. not that they are too sculptural, nor that they are too practical. rather, they seem to completely falter from reaching either of these two ends, even while exerting so much effort trying to achieve something in between both. take, for example, the beloved spring 23 show. seeing these designs through photographs, i was amazed. they were beautiful, innovative, yet seeing them in video made me feel uneasy. a fashion picture does not communicate how a garment actually sits, for a fashion picture is no different really than any other flat media. it’s simply like looking at a picture in a gallery. but when fashion must actually serve its practical purpose, that is when the errors typically become visible. upon watching the video, i noticed how ill fitting the garments appeared, how strange they looked being on a person, being worn. 

sometimes, art and wearable fashion should remain of two different worlds, and with comme des garcons, i unfortunately believe this to be the case. the aspiration to create these surreal ultramodern sculptures to be worn in a somewhat pragmatic way is too strong. it lessens the beauty of the design, makes it cheaper and attempts to restrict it only to the bounds of being something equivalent to a t-shirt. by both the model and the garment failing to compliment one another, the design cannot be counted as a wearable item, nor as a thing of fine art. the balance is neglected for the sake of promoting two ideas at once, and thus, it looks just plain stiff... 

the designs at the comme des garcons main line are really something of a feat, something little art nerd me would much rather ponder upon as a sculptural work, rather than as a weird dress.

I will say with the kid that there is no other way to check if someone has a soul. If Cas were to allow himself to feel bad about it? It would do nothing for the kid. Cas feeling bad wouldn't create magical opiods into the kid's bloodstream. All feeling bad would do is stop Cas from making sure the kid had his soul

As for Balthazar okay kind of a touche there but this is a war and Balthazar chose to be a soldier for the anti Purgatory team. Cas reacted to an enemy soldier in the normal way that a war dictates

I have a lot of understanding towards Crowley's decisions in 8x22. Crowley tried so many options and in a last ditch resort out of anxiety that the Winchesters were winning he went after Sarah Blake and others. And that is Crowley willing to break a metaphorical Geneva Conventions by bringing civilian lives into the war, even before that in 8x07, but those innocent lives were less personal to Sam & Dean

So you can imagine that my understanding of Crowley means that my understanding towards Cas is going to be tenfold my understanding towards Crowley because Cas was usually vs other "soldiers" and if he did do any civilian damage as Cas™ I forgot about it, or it wasn't significant enough to stand out like Crowley's did tbh

As for the angels whilst part of that was Castiel himself, he wasn't literally Cas™ he was under the influence of other souls and especially the leviathan. I liken it to when you want to punch someone in the face but you don't. But then imagine you were a vessel for leviathans and suddenly what is just a thought turns into an action, when in any other circumstance you would never do that

From a morality perspective I just don't think this is Cas at his worse. From a feelings perspective? If somebody loves Balthazar then it's valid that they would see Cas killing their beloved character as Cas at his worse on an emotional level

The reason I don't see the betrayal against Crowley as a factor in whether this was the worse version of Cas for me, from an emotional perspective, rather than a moral one is because I understood Cas' reasoning for not wanting to give Crowley the souls. Cas even had a conflicted look on his face like he hated feeling like he had to do that to Crowley. Also Crowley did technically try and kill his friends so there's that

But even in saying that there were times Cas could have killed Crowley but warned him at first, but instead only tried to go for it when Crowley wouldn't listen [ 6x22 ] and [ 8x07 ] is an example of another warning

Also Cas apologized in 7x23, well kind of, it wasn't 100% Cas as we know him because it was honey!era Cas, but remember when I spoke of the difference between thought and action 4 paragraphs above this one? Cas looked apologetic when he looked down at the jar. The apology was a thought and I saw it on his face. But honey cas turned that into action. Into the action of giving an apology. Also well Crowley survived and he was fine. So those are the reasons I don't see the betrayal as an emotional worse of Cas moment, because Cas made up for that to Crowley in his own way

The worse version of Cas emotionally for me would be between when his self-esteem was so low he felt like his only use would be to let literal evil use his body because he felt like he wasn't enough. But that's not worse as an evaluation on Cas' character but worse for me because I really felt bad for Cas then or not being allowed to feel happiness because of the empty

i mean. ik i talk a lot about cas and crowley's dynamic in terms of their relationship with dean but honestly they have a really interesting thing independent of that too. bc crowley doesnt really expect cas to be a saint or a good soldier or anything like that. he's kind of just willing to accept cas as he is, bad parts and all, because he literally saw cas at his very worst in season 6 during the war in heaven. which in terms of cas' character arc being about choosing freedom and finding his identity outside of being an angel, is kind of huge

so it's really interesting to see their one on one interactions because unlike with the winchesters cas will just kind of be straightforward with crowley. he doesnt have to hide anything or sugarcoat things with him. and part of that is because crowley is a demon and what he thinks doesnt really matter to cas in the same way as the winchesters. but it's also because crowley understands how far he's willing to go and he has a sense of respect for that

The one where... 8 years after IWTB Mulder and Scully have apparently broken up and get pulled back into the world of the X-Files by a right-wing conspiracy tv show host and an unnecessary retconning of the original series mytharc.

Best: In 2016 I was just so happy to see Mulder and Scully back on my screen together that I was willing to put up with some bullshit - today… I have no time for this.

Worst: Where do I even start? The unexplored breakup. The diatribe monologues. The retconning of the mytharc. The catch phrase dialogue. CSM seriously? The decision to bring back CSM when we saw his face explode in the original series finale long after he had outlived his usefulness on the show… it’s emblematic of CC’s fundamental misunderstanding of what this revival could have been.

Rewatch Thoughts:

William check-in: Scully: … because we have a child together… Exposition alert! Exposition alert! I think Mulder’s aware. But yeah, if you need to give them a reason to continue to fight the good fight after all this time and everything that’s been done to them that’s actually a good one.

Break-up check-in: When I first heard that Mulder and Scully were going to be broken up in the revival it was incomprehensible to me - WHY would CC do that? And then do nothing WITH it, except inject some unexplained tension between the characters... It made me so sad. Now, after several years and having read fanfic that actually explores the fissures in their relationship that might have led to a breakup it makes more sense to me - but on the show it still feels like an attempt to recreate a dynamic from the original run that’s decades out of date, and like a fuck you to shippers who in CC’s eyes watch the show wrong. Because we care about the emotional lives of the characters and not about incomprehensible mytharc rambling 🙄

The episode title My Struggle makes me think first of Mein Kampf, Hitler’s Nazi manifesto - based on an interview I read CC said the title was a reference to Karl Ove Knausgaard’s novels of the same name and referring to what Mulder’s going through but he can’t have been unaware of the Hitler association and it just puts a bad taste in my mouth... Secondly, the Struggles are aptly named for what they put the viewers through - and this is probably the best of the Stuggle episodes 😬

I get that there’s some exposition that needs to be communicated but did the intro need to be SO expositiony? The show is returning for a highly anticipated limited series 6-episode revival and CC starts off not with a cold open to draw you in to the story but with Mulder monologuing while someone slaps visual aids down on the table?

OG title sequence woohoo! 🎉🎉🎉 With Skinner added yay! (Wish that actually meant we got lots of good Skinner this season but alas)

Scully’s still at creepy ass Our Lady of Sorrows booooo…

Scully: He doesn’t know how to reach you, Mulder. I barely know how myself. Wtf does this mean - they’re talking on the phone and she knows where he lives! Emotionally speaking she doesn’t know how to reach him? Just exposition to let us know they aren’t in regular touch? It’s not like she hesitates to call him or go with him to meet Tad O’Malley when he asks.

Revival Scully first impressions: The wig isn’t great, and the color isn’t red enough. She seems more brittle, stiffer in the way she talks. Maybe it’s a conscious acting choice on GA’s part - and I can come up with plenty of character reasons why the 14 years since the show ended, or even the last 8 years since IWTB, might do that to her… but honestly it just feels like GA hasn’t quite found Scully yet. Or maybe it’s that I see more of her more recent roles like Stella and Bedelia in this Scully so it’s harder for me to see her as Scully now.

Revival Mulder first impressions: I like the stubble. And maybe it’s just that I haven’t watched DD in anything else recently but he’s just instantly Mulder for me. Petulant Mulder lol.

Wouldn’t it have been so much more interesting if Sveta was actually a character from a case from the original run? But tbh they didn’t actually investigate that many straightforward abductions. I’m trying to think who it could have been - Ruby from Conduit in season 1?

Classic scoop mark scars? I don’t remember those ever being a thing in the original run. And wouldn’t Scully have them too? Ugh here comes the retconning.

Why does Mulder call Scully Dana in that moment at Sveta’s? It seems designed to needle her - when it’s always been used in moments of intimacy before. Why does he feel the need to poke at her while they’re talking about abductions, and bodily violations, and stolen fetuses - things he knows she has personal experience with…

Ugh, Sveta’s exposition about their relationship and breakup and child - so clunky. And this is all the explanation we ever get to my recollection! I guess we’re supposed to take it as true, or true enough, based on Scully’s reaction.

Sveta says Mulder suffered from “endogenous depression” - which is defined as occurring without an obvious stressful event or trigger… I don’t doubt that Mulder might suffer from depression (we saw him going through depressive episodes in the original series) I’m just unclear why the show wanted to define it as “endogenous” when there are so many traumatic events in his life that must continue to affect him (like uh, losing his entire family, being abducted and tortured, dying and being resurrected, getting sentenced to death and going on the run, being isolated and presumably seeing no one other than Scully for years, losing his son - just to name a few…) - but sure, those experiences have no influence on his mental health or why they might have broken up 🙄

So is Scully a surgeon or not?! In IWTB she was leading an experimental neurosurgery and now she’s just assisting surgeons? Although maybe she got demoted for getting her surgical info from google 😂

Scully is a grown woman and can go for a champagne limo ride with a smarmy guy like Tad O’Malley if she wants - but I HATE it. I can headcanon that she’s just going along with him to try to figure out what his agenda is - and her line later about him being a charming man full of charming BS supports that - but she still thinks he’s charming and is flattered by his attention and blesdfhhvdj it grosses me out.

Why is Mulder so shocked that Sveta was abducted by men when LITERALLY the same thing happened to Scully?? Like, we’ve done this ‘maybe it’s all a big hoax/conspiracy’ storyline before. Also two things can be true!! Humans may be using alien technology against humanity for their own reasons, but that doesn’t mean aliens don’t exist (the opposite actually) and it doesn’t invalidate the things they saw on the X-Files. I get why the show might want to say lalala supersoldiers who/what now? but invalidating the entire original run of the show just seems like an incredibly hamfisted way to go about starting this revival - annoying at the least, if not insulting to original viewers!

Why is Mulder still so distrustful of Skinner after all these years? Skinner’s little hint of a smile when Mulder gives him his number 🥺

Look, they’re at their most dynamic in that scene on the porch and emotionally there’s a lot to unpack - but the fact that Mulder’s this fired up over what seems like nothing we haven’t seen before and we’re back to the Scully trying to rein him in routine is just exhausting and I don’t have the energy for it.

Scully’s expression sitting on the couch listening to Mulder and Tad O’Malley’s rant is me this entire episode 😂 - I hate all of this. Scully: It’s fearmongering claptrap, isolationist techno-paranoia so bogus and dangerous... You tell ‘em Scully!

So are you telling me that CSM somehow reconstructed his skull after it exploded but still needs to smoke cigarettes through tracheostomy tube? Sure.
