Just realized: Rise of Red is maybe funny a little for its connection to the first three films for one reason:

Maleficent says to Mal back in D1, "When I was your age, I was cursing entire kingdoms." But cut to ROR and...she wasn't even doing that lmao, she was playing lacky to Uliana and got frozen by a book.

Beyond the isle of the lost spoilers!

Something cool I noticed in the new descendants book is that both in Red's part of the book and in the special chapter with Chloe, they both foreshadow each other and their friendship.

...Look

There is red, saying that she couldn't have friends because she can't have weakness, she can let people get hurt just because her mother wanted to get her, maybe revealing why she wasn't so open to Chloe in the maybe first half of the movie?

Now let's take a look at Chloe's

I mean like COME ON YOU CANNOT TELL ME THIS ISN'T ABOUT HER FUTURE FRIENDSHIP WITH RED! THE FORESHADOWING!!! ( and the fact that Ben/mal, Doug/evie are saying these things to her looking at eachother... SUSPICIOUS) also- the one you least expect? maybe the girl that threatened feeding you to a jabberwocky HMMMM

I may be reading a lot into these parts of the book but is a nice thing to point

(btw that " I'm a loner , I don't want have friends, I'm not your friend" can also be a plotline to red being more closed on the relationship, softening with time... I can already sense the "she fell first but she fell harder" oh lord I'm going to stop now.)

Also the whole "she's not like her mother/your mom beheaded mine but I don't blame you, so don't blame yourself for her actions" is >>>>

Okay so in Rise of Red, after Uliana gets transformed into a flamingo and chases down Bridget and Ella, it's clear that Hook and Morgie run after Uliana first and Hades and Maleficent bring up the rear as they casually saunter after them, holding hands.

HOW IS IT THEN POSSIBLE FOR MALEFICENT AND HOOK TO CUT BRIDGET OFF WHEN SHE WAS TRYING TO GO THROUGH THE ENTRANCE?

I know it's a weird thing to focus on but I do, and now I need answers!

Okay, I stayed up till midnight to watch the new descendants movie when it dropped and I have been itching to talk about it since! So now that it's been a minute I feel like I can talk without ruining it for other people, I am still gonna put a spoiler warning though!

So spoilers for Descendants 4: Rise of Red!!

Okay I liked the movie, it was really good! But it really did feel like a descendants movie in the sense that there was a lot of wasted potential just like with the past 3 movies.

Especially with the ending, I was super dissapointed. Like what was that message?? Her mother was beyond redemption and the only way for her to be a better person was to just completely erase her truama?? Like she's just not capable of healing?? What??!

I thought what was going to happen was that they were going to fail to change the past and would have to go back to the present and convince the Queen of Hearts that things didn't have to be like that, that these matters weren't all black and white and that change was still possible. Like they'd have to get through to her and help her want to redeem herself using their new understanding of her!

When they were transported to the past, before Bridget turns evil, I thought it was because what Red really wanted wasn't to completely change her mother (or to lose her) but to have a better understanding of her so she could help her mom heal and be better for the both of them!

I don't know, the ending was just a real let down for me. I'll probably be talking more about descendents for the next little while so stay tuned for that

These two are the only reason I'm giving The Rise of Red a chance. We have seen how Mal's parents met in the House of Mouse as adults, now let's see how teenage Hades and Maleficent play out as high school sweet hearts in the Descendants universe.

ok but all the jokes aside, i DO appreciate the fact that Rise of Red brought back a theme that's not only central to the story of descendants as a whole, but that's also been neglected in the last few installments of the franchise: the theme of parental abuse and the empowerment of the abused child to take back their life and learn to be loved

it also touched on the theme of moral ambiguity, and the reality of living with certain privileges (and the blind spots that come with them)

the execution is debatable, obviously, but they were there, and i appreciate that, especially since they're pretty rare themes in children's mainstream media

Okay but like, is Alice in Wonderland now canonically altered in Descendants Rise of Red due to changing Queen of Hearts past and therefore she turns out nice in present??? How did it go down now with a nice Queen of Hearts??? Did Alice in Wonderland get erased maybe??? Or did Alice never leave Wonderland because she has no reason to wanna leave if the Queen is nice to her???
