With a Heavy Heart - Chapter 7
<- Previous Chapter
Summary:
After a disasterous mission, Raven demotes Li Ling from his rank as Operations Chief. He is placed under the tutelage of Drew, who is tasked with his re-training and assessing when, or if, he is able to earn his title back.
In his brash attempts to regain his lost position and pride, Li Ling stumbles into long-buried pasts, and comes to realise the terrifying depth to his unassuming teacher and the house he served.
CW:
Contains themes of emotional hurt, grief and loss, with mention of canonical character death, and use of organised crime-adjacent tropes.
Chapter 7
Li Ling burst through the fire escape and out onto the gleaming observation deck. The wind blew forlornly through the rooftop garden, creating a gentle rustling flow of motion. The city of Gyrate stretched out beyond the balcony, gleaming gold as afternoon turned to evening, the Miracle hovering in silent repose, inescapable on the horizon.
Sure enough, the slowly shifting smoky silhouette of Drew stood against the railing, looking out over the city. He had discarded his shirt, letting the beautiful display of Lotus petal, Papyrus leaves and golden coiling snakes glow in the afternoon light, his bronze cane leaning against the glass next to him.
Li Ling called out. Drew looked back over his shoulder before focusing back intently on the horizon.
“Drew…” Li Ling called out. “I spoke to Laura, and she told me… she told me everything. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean...”
Drew didn’t react at all.
“Look…” Gods, Li Ling was terrible at this “I…didn’t mean what I said. And I know that…not meaning it doesn’t make it better.”
Nothing
Li Ling gave a shuddering breath “I didn’t know…I don’t know lots of things”
The flattened ears rose, just a fraction
“…I…all I know how to do is break shit. And I’ve broken something, and I really really want to fix it, but I don’t…I don’t have the str-…I don’t know HOW to fix it. To fix anything.”
The Jackal stood up from his lean. Rolling back his shoulders and looking to the sky.
“But I want…to fix this one thing. Even if it’s not fixed all the way.”
“Draw your weapon.”
“wh-what?”
The canine figure and the cane vanished from the balcony in the blink of an eye. Before Li Ling could register it, there was a metallic crash, and his arm was thrown back with the force of a giant impact. The cuff on his arm sparked before falling to the ground, its hinges expertly sliced clean through.
Drew appeared in front of him in a swirl of golden smoke, sword drawn and ready at his side.
“Draw your weapon.” He said again, before lunging towards Li Ling.
Time slowed as the wave of divine energy started to course through Li Ling’s body. His senses heightening, his hearing and eyesight becoming sharp to the point of being painful. In the precious moments of hyperfocus that his pent-up energy offered him he could see Drew flying towards him, sword raised and thrusting forward, wreathed in golden fire. Li Ling’s first move was one of pure instinct. Four giant arms materialised behind him, summoning forth an ornate lance that he pulled in a defensive position horizontally across his body. The sword buried itself into the shaft of the spear, cutting deep into the wood. The sheer momentum of Drew’s strike pushed the two of them back several meters as Li Ling planted his feet. The move didn’t earn Li Ling any respite as Drew pulled the sword back for another blistering fast attack.
This was bad. Li Ling could only try desperately to defend as the sword swung and swung, each time embedding into the lance or swinging into hastily vacated space. Drew attacked with inhuman speed and precision; every sword strike aimed true. In a sickening moment of realisation, a thought occurred to Li Ling. This was how House Ramses settled matters of honour.
“DREW!” Li Ling yelled, “I don’t WANT this!”
The Jackal didn’t falter. This wasn’t going to work.
Focus, Li Ling. Fight with your head.
Li Ling divided his attention between the sword and the environment around them. He needed Drew to stop, to hold still for a moment so he could maybe talk some sense into him. He could perhaps hold him with his extra arms? No. He hadn’t used his strength in weeks, there’s no telling if he would be able to control them well enough to stop Drew getting crushed. He could fight back? No. This balcony wasn’t strengthened for Esper combat, there’s no telling who was beneath them. He could get Drew over the edge and force him to focus on the fall? No, it was quitting time, there would be crowds of people on the street below, and if Drew didn’t prepare himself for the fall in time…
Drew’s blade came within centimetres of Li Ling’s shoulder, and he refocused on the fight. Whatever he did, he needed to do it quick, because he had maybe a minute before someone noticed them fighting. Fighting in the Union between Union members was a grave offense, and the Union couldn’t lose Drew because of his mistake. He was running out of options and time, and Drew’s onslaught kept knocking him out of his train of thought. Drew’s slices were simply too fast and too precise…
Wait. No. They were fast, yes, but they weren’t precise. Not to Drew’s standards anyway. If anything, he was being comparatively brash and sloppy. Li Ling had been sparring Drew for weeks and these wild, swinging stabs were practically amateurish compared to what he was used to. It felt like the fog of the gauntlet was lifting from his mind and his focus got more and more intense. There was an opportunity. And there. And there. But that didn’t do him any good, he didn’t want to hurt Drew….
Surprise him.
Yes. That was it. He just needed the right swing…there.
Drew gave a manic thrust, pushing the tip of the sword straight towards Li Ling’s chest. He was too high; his footwork was too unsteady. Li Ling did something he’d never done before in front of an enemy; He dropped to his knees. As if in slow motion, Drew’s sword sailed over the top of his head and Li Ling found himself somewhere he’d never been before: Inside Drew’s guard.
“Drew, STOP!”
The fist connected with canine jaw. It wasn’t a special punch, it didn’t contain any divine energy behind it, it wasn’t from his freshly regained arms. If anything, Li Ling was holding everything he had back. Regardless, it sent Drew reeling. The sword dropped from his hand, golden fire fading to purple, to black, and then extinguishing.
Drew stood, unsteady on his feet. He was out of breath. The two held for a moment, only the wind providing any motion to the scene whatsoever. Slowly, Drew raised his hand to his face, touched the side of his nose and regarded the small amount of blood that darkened his fingertips.
“…was that a test?” Li Ling asked, at a loss of anything else to say.
“…Yes, Master Li Ling…” Drew said between heavy breaths “…I believe it was.”
Two lone figures stood atop the knoll, standing before two unmarked headstones. House Ramses had a showy mausoleum for well wishers and onlookers, but this is where a precious few knew they truly lay. Drew and Laura stood, in silence. This was the first time Drew had come to see them both. Laura put an encouraging hand on his back, urging him forward. Drew looked at her and nodded, a small package wrapped in golden silk in his hands. He opened the folds of silk to reveal a mask, bronze but tarnished to a textured black. Drew took a deep breath and lay the mask down upon the leftmost grave. An illusory golden butterfly followed it to the ground and landed upon it, before dissipating into particles on its perch. The two stood in a moment of quiet respect before Laura lead Drew away. She held him in an encouraging sideways hug as they left, at long last laying the Reaper to rest with the house he served.
