The original Sputnik was a success for the Soviet Union in the space race. Now Russia is looking to a vaccine named after that satellite to tackle Covid-19 at home—and make the country proud on the international stage.

A mass vaccination campaign got underway December 5, with 70 clinics in Moscow receiving the Sputnik shot to distribute to the thousands of people who had registered. The jab is being offered first to teachers and those working in health and social services, according to the BBC.

The situation is serious. As Reuters reported December 2, Russia now has the fourth highest number of recorded infections in the world. Figures published by TASS December 5 said 28,782 new cases had been recorded in the preceding 24 hours: the highest number since the start of the pandemic.

Now More Than 2M COVID Cases In Russia

TASS put the total number of recorded cases at over 2.4 million, with 42,684 deaths.

But Russia also has vaccines. The first—known as Sputnik V—was announced in August. The country’s health minister, Mikhail Murashko, revealed December 2 that 100,000 people had already been vaccinated.

That number is set to rise significantly in the coming weeks. President Vladimir Putin announced the vaccination program December 2, telling Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova, in remarks reported by Reuters, “Let’s agree on this – you will not report to me next week, but you will start large-scale vaccination… Let’s get to work already.”

Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said December 2 that Russian citizens would be at the front of the line.

Putin Yet To Receive Vaccine

Yet Putin will not be among them. For all that Sputnik V has been presented as a triumph for Russian medical science, the Russian president himself has not taken it.

That’s because it has not completed full clinical trials. As Peskov explained, in remarks reported by Bloomberg November 24, “The president can’t use an uncertified vaccine.”

In fact Putin—who at 68 is in a higher risk category because of his age—is taking no chances at all. Reports in June suggested that anyone invited to meet the Russian head of state had first to pass through a disinfection tunnel. In common with many world leaders—and millions of others in countless professions—Putin seems to have conducted much of the business of running Russia remotely.

That has not made the task any simpler. As Reuters reported November 20, Russia’s gross domestic product fell 4.7% year-on-year in October.

Russia’s economy is hardly the only one suffering in the pandemic. For Putin, a leader whose popularity was for years built on Russia’s rising living standards, the challenge is especially acute—especially as things were already heading in the wrong direction before the virus struck.

So there’s a lot at stake as the vaccination program gets under way—not least the hope that success might eventually also provide a shot in the arm for the Russian economy.

Sputnik V: A Chance For Russian Science To Shine

Almost as soon as Sputnik V was announced in August 2020, Kremlin-backed media reported orders for one billion doses of the new vaccine.

Russia’s Direct Investment Fund—which is responsible for Sputnik V’s international distribution—has applied for its approval for use in 40 countries.

Important though the public health challenges undoubtedly are, there’s something else at stake here, too. With other vaccines, developed in the west, due for distribution in the coming months there are political and commercial prizes up for grabs, too: national pride, and sales revenues.

So much is expected of Russia’s vaccines: seen not just as the solution the threat to public health posed by the virus, but also as a chance for Russian science to shine.
