Corvo's last travel log entry in Dishonored 2 breaks my heart every time:
"Dunwall. My other home. Full of memories, now tainted by someone else's power fantasies.
I can't wait to give Delilah her nasty spirit back and be done with it. I still don't know how much of what she claims is falsehood.
It's true that she has some of Jessamine’s traits. It hurts to admit that because I don't want to see Jessamine in anyone, except Emily. And I see so much of Jessamine in our daughter. Not only physical resemblances. The sad frown when someone tells a mean joke. The sweet smirk to Wyman during the council meeting, when she thinks nobody's watching. The sharpness in her eyes when she argues with natural philosophers twice her age.
I want to bring that light back into her eyes, undo Delilah's darkness. How many times did Emily tell me she wasn't a porcelain doll, when we were training? Always asking for more, smiling at the bruises and scratches. I want to watch her press the attack again, screaming at me in exhilaration. I want her to be alive again. My little girl."
Corvo, all these years later, is still in mourning. He seems to go through the events of Dishonored 2, not to regain the Empire, but to regain what is left of his small, broken family. He's exhausted, weighed down by regrets, and full of anger, but he presses on for his daughter. Despite all of the tragedy and suffering of 15 years ago, Corvo still sees Dunwall as his other home because that's where all his memories with his loved ones have taken place. He sees so much of Emily's mother in her, but also sees himself as well. His main motivation throughout all of his hardship, it seems, is love.
Idk man he's just like...a really good dad :'(

actually good doctor who video game ideas
disco-elysium style crpg where you play as the doctor, going around a Planet of the Week and intervening in personal and political conflicts, helping people, making moral choices, etc.
TARDIS spacetime geoguesser. you could make this a full-on edutainment game by mocking up historical time periods and locations
dalek FPS. think doom, with a dalek-like setup of a lone dalek escaping a space prison/research facility and reactivating its functionalities as it progresses
RTS with all the classic factions (daleks, cybermen, time lords, sontarans), and then some deeper/wackier cuts like idk draconians and judoon.
alternatively make this one a space 4x. 'endless space with daleks' is an easy slam dunk
first-person survival horror as either the doctor or a sally-sparrow type one-off companion character commujnicating with the doctor through Random Documents and Audio Logs
first-person environemtnal puzzler a la kairo or antichamber or the witness in e-space/the antizone/omega's antimatter universe/etc. where you play as the doctor just peacefully figuring out some puzzles in a surreal abstract environment
time travel puzzler kind of like that one titanfall 2 level meets return of the obra dinn where you take the tardis back into the past to affect your enviroment in the present
immortality/her story style FMV game where you play a confused normie trying to puzzle together the events of a typical doctor who episode plot through fragemnted police interview clips of a very exasperated doctor trying to explain that there's an alien dog loose
immersive sim/stealth game in the thief or dishonored vein starring one of the doctor's more-violent-than-him companions like ace or river song sneaking through buildings to foil a sinister alien plot
okay now that ive made this list theres no reason for the BBC to ever license out a shitty 2d platformer every again. Please

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE ANTS
WOAH THAT WAS FAST!!! TOP TEN ANTS, WORST TO BEST:
10. Fire Ant
Feisty little fiends!! They often attack small animals such as small lizards and can kill them, but they only bite to get a grip and then sting. For humans this is painful, similarly to what one feels when burned by fire, which is how they get their name. They can also survive extreme conditions, like extreme cold weather, even though they don't hibernate!! I consider them friends, they likely would consider me a foe, yet they are very charming even so. 10/10 ant.
9. Saharan Silver Ant
The fastest ant in the world!! and she's beautiful!!! Perfect shape, gorgeous colour, cool stripes, 10/10 ant. They can almost travel as fast as a human's walking pace, and they only use four of their six legs when moving at full speed!! And this quadrupedal gait is achieved by raising their front two legs!! So silly, so clever!! What a sweet little face!! What athleticism!! We love her!!!
8. Electric Ant
So small!! Funny little eyes, very charming faces, delightful shape, 10/10 ant. They get their name from their painful sting relative to their size. They get benefits from both asexual and sexual reproduction, and they build their colonies under rocks and plant litter, but also in furniture, food, and clothing in people's homes. Little pests!! But I could never hate such sweet little things. These guys also get points for the cool name!!
7. Dinosaur Ant
AWESOME!! I LOVE YOU DINOSAUR ANT!! What a beast!! What a beauty!! They are like the big beautiful butches of the ant world, if that makes any sense. Such intelligence in those eyes, such wonderful shapes, such lovely mandibles!! These guys get extra points for the cool as hell name. Dinosaur ant!! Awesome, 10/10 ant.
6. Red Wood Ant
Also known as the horse ant, so extra points for the fun name as well :) these guys are voracious scavengers, with foraging trails that may extend 100 m, or even further for larger worker ants!! They often build their nests against rotting tree stumps. So hardworking!! So intuitive!! So charming!! 10/10 ant. What a beautiful little lady, i love you red wood ants
5. Red Weaver Ant
Very charming, cute little eyes, funny long legs, 10/10 ant. They build their nests by bending leaves together, which requires a hell of a lot of strength and teamwork. So smart!! So strong!! What can't she do?? She can steal my heart, that's for sure!!
4. Yellow Meadow Ant
These guys get points for their funny little faces!!! They remind me of rubber ducky isopods. Friendly shape, very charming, beautiful colour, 10/10 ant. The yellow colour and funny little eyes comes from them spending so much time underground instead of foraging for food. They breed root aphids and feed on the honeydew! And also sometimes the aphids themselves!! Clever little things. Points given also for the cute name!!
3. Leafcutter Ant
Clever little beasts!!! Very intuitive, very smart, very hardworking. And so charming!! Little eyes, huge long legs, all round very friendly. I love watching them work. The efficiency, the perfect cuts, the neat little leaf shapes. She's so strong!! She's so good at her job!!! 10/10 ant, I love you leafcutter ants, leafcutter ants I love youuuu
2. Thief Ant
Sneaky little buggers!! They're getting so many points because they remind me of Dishonored for some?? reason?? Such sweet faces!! Such charm!! So polite!! You'd never expect them to be such cheeky little bastards, but ah, it is all a ruse!! They steal food from other ant nests, and they can survive just about anywhere. They can live in people's homes, in the cracks of floorboards, under rocks, in any exposed soil, or rotting logs, and they dig tunnels to nearby ant nests for an easy way in and out! Very sneaky!! 10/10 ant.
1. Black Garden Ant
The classic ant!!! Very charming, perfectly shaped, sweet little faces. 10/10 ant. I feel a connection with them, they've been in the garden of every house I've lived in. I still remember the first time I held an ant. They're like my neighbours, my friends. If a black garden ant lived in the house next to me I know with full certainty she would bake me apple pies and keep my packages safe when I wasn't home and pick up groceries for me when I was sick. They're special to me like a beloved classic children's book character is special to me. Like Paddington. They're the Paddington of ants. My dearest sweetest black garden ants, they could never make me hate you <3
#I FORGOT TO POST THIS!! SORRY!!!#i love ants...ants i love youuuuu#this is the most fun ive had with an ask for a while#thank you so much for this!!!#yes the ants are all 10/10 dont look im not biased!! i swear!!!

First thing was that a ship malfunction caused the reactor core to go a bit fucky but it's fine, they got it fixed with minimal radiation exposure. However, since the whole crew had woken from cryo anyway, they did their quarterly Mandatory Coworker Bonding Session by watching a movie (a VHS tape of Home Alone 2, the only movie on the ship) and playing an incredibly revealing and only partially spiteful round of never-have-I-ever
Eventually they made it to their actual destination, a shot-down ship they were scavenging weapons off of to deliver to some rebels. While there everything went so so bad, there were a lot of corpses and bad vibes and such. Then a cool pirate ship showed up that were actually chill, then a non-cool non-pirate ship showed up that the pirates went off to deal with while we finished loading up the guns. Then it got REALLY bad when we found evidence of fucking xenomorphs on the planet so we skedaddled as quickly as we possibly could.
We, in fact, skedaddled so hard that the three of us with no prior experience with xenos elected to experience drug-induced amnesia of the whole thing and our medic took us to the literal opposite side of the known universe while we spent 10 months in cryo sleep, waking up with no idea where we were or what had happened
But wait! it gets better! :D
We each took a bit to reorient ourselves (mulligan with the ship's log, the psychologist with her recordings, the biologist with her field notes) then reconvened for breakfast
Since they had essentially defaulted on their original contract with their employer (weyland-yutani, of course) mulligan first called for an election of a new captain (since he had been appointed by the company) (he was successfully reelected) and then they started discussing their options
The thing is. I don't even remember how we got on to the subject of children. I think bc the psych mentioned one of her ex-husbands, who was a space pirate & still owed her some favors? But it was established that the medic had children, and then, crucially, Mulligan admitted that he didn't know whether he had children or not, because one of his few passions in life is fucking military wives and he had, on occasion, "hit it raw," on his partner's request, because "[the kid] would look a lot better with [mulligan's] nose than [the general's]."
As it happened, the other marine who was traveling with us knew that general. And his (ex-)wife. And their kid, who was very clearly not the general's, and who suffered greatly at the hands of his father because of it, going into the military and getting assigned to the shittiest most dangerous unit possible (destroying xenomorph nests). Our marine knew this because the kid had been assigned to him & fought under him. The kid rose through the ranks pretty quickly after that but eventually left the military with a dishonorable discharge and basically dropped off the face of... space, I guess.
Now we have to go back a few sessions for some context! On our last job we picked up some passengers, a deeply unpopular colonial governor and his long suffering guard. Mulligan didn't really get along with either of them, especially after a whole situation where the governor turned out to be an android planted by The Company to spy on us & test our loyalty. The guard, who had worked for the governor for years and thought it was a normal human, was understandably very freaked out when it went rogue and started sabotaging the ship. So the guard tried (and failed) to kill the android and by the time we got everything else in order the android was about to dispose of/kill the guard, and we were about to fail the Company's assessment. Mulligan was fully ready to let the guard die so that they could all keep their jobs, and was in the process of ordering the marine to do just that when the psych stepped in and talked everybody down.
By the next colony, the medic had gotten the guard new paperwork & a fake id- which he immediately used to hand Mulligan a resumé and try to get a permanent position on the Ophelia. Mulligan took that resume immediately over to the colony shipping department and got him a job very much Not on the Ophelia, and that was that, except then we kind of brought a xenomorph egg onto that colony but everything is probably fine. We dropped him off, he's not our problem anymore, no worries.
Except. You may be able to see where this is going. Because, back in the present, the marine tells Mulligan that he has met his son. Because his son has traveled on this ship. Because the guard was his son and nobody fucking told mulligan because our gm is fantastic at improv and none of this was planned until I made the joke about mulligan hitting it raw!! The marine, the medic, and the first mate all knew and didn't say anything, except they did tell the guard before he left, but who even knows if he's still alive the marine does and he is
And then mulligan made the decision to scrap their ship, cut all ties with the company, cobble together a new ship and eke out a living from there.
So basically I need to think of a new name for a ship even though the Ophelia was perfect :( we do get to copy over our ai tho! So Thursday stays <3
ALSO the last and most perfect thing is that the guard's name was Jameson Franz (until getting a new identity as Phineas Winters). And Mulligan's actual legal name, that i forgot about until immediately after session ended, is James. Literally James' son and it wasn't even planned
Okay. So. A number of things happened to mulligan this session.

Honestly, it was a bit of a failing in Dishonored 2 not to have Emily wear Corvo’s mask, in my opinion. It would have been so sick. Like father, like daughter, totally mirroring the cause for him wearing it in the first game considering she was now “dishonored” and usurped, her position tainted and needing to hide her face. I just imagine watching her pick it up, admiring it in the safe room, and making a comment like “Huh. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this. Better yet, it’s been a long time since the world has. I hope I can live up to it.”
It would have opened up some interesting internal dialogue for her in the travel log, too, no doubt. Something along the lines of “Walking through the streets of my father’s youth in his mask makes me feel close to him, even when he isn’t here. I miss him, but I’ll be back soon. I promise.”
Plus, Jindosh could still perform his whole discovery monologue as with Corvo, just altered like, “All that and only one man ever wore that mask, though it seems his physique has changed somewhat, isn’t that right, Your Imperial Majesty? Welcome, Lady Emily Kaldwin.” I especially think such a facetious and patronizing joke would fit his character.
#i know that the mask is custom fit for his face#but it was constructed completely before he even got there#so presumably its an adjustable fit that she could work for herself#just the scarf as a disguise only when you're as prolific as the empress??? i#all that being said in regards to jindosh i do LOVE his line that she has her father's eyes#kj plays dishonored#dishonored

I beat Prey yesterday! here are the general thoughts i scribbled down.
i thought the opening was super strong. When you break the glass on the apartment window? *chef's kiss*
i’ve never played system shock 2 but understand this is heavily influenced by it. I've played Bioshock though so I did pick up on some of the similarities by proxy.
generally I liked combat. In the first half it's pretty tense and survival horror-y and there's certainly a difficulty curve. I liked using limited resources and thinking up creative solutions to problems.
However, most stuff became trivial halfway through. The shotgun is just busted after a couple upgrades. Once you know a surefire way to deal with each enemy type, the game gets pretty easy. from what I understand the difficulty settings do not affect this much (I played on normal). You can make the game more tedious, but not necessarily harder.
i wish there were more horror elements in the mid to late game. There are some genuinely great jump scares early on but they're basically gone past a certain point.
main quest in general was a treadmill of “go to point a, do x thing, oh no something stopped you from doing x thing, you need to go to point y and do b thing so you can go back and do x thing”. kind of disappointing; it mostly served as a way to get around and find more interesting stuff (with a few exceptions). i liked the side quests more.
the voice acting was great. In particular, Benedict Wong's performance as Alex stuck out to me.
the visual and world design was fantastic, too. I think its impressive that Talos I had a unifying design but each area still felt distinct.
visually the Looking Glass stuff was super cool. I think that Arkane developed this with the time travel Dishonored 2 mission and it was cool there too.
there's an impressive amount of extra flavor. All of the art, audio logs, emails, books, and even the ability to explore a bit in space. Just cool details that helped make it all feel real and believable. It adds a lot.
i wanted neuromods to be more like the plasmids in bioshock. While they are the same thing story-wise, in game they function as a talent tree. And some just don’t make sense. Like... how would jamming 4 neuromods in my eye make me physically better at lifting stuff? Why is it an incremental skill I have to invest in 3 times? This makes a little more sense with the Typhon powers since those are basically magic, but not the Human ones.
the ending and some of the mid story is clearly rushed, although I'm glad there's more stuff after the credits.
despite the underwhelming endings (pre credits) I do think the developers put an impressive amount of thought into the circumstances various playthroughs would have surrounding them. I looked it up and there's a boggling number of variations on what's basically two endings.
startlingly few bugs! Just some clipping stuff for me, mostly.
there were some cool small details. I like that if you go someplace before the main story officially tells you to, January will act surprised that you knew ahead of time to go there for the next step. This only happened to me once (on accident), but I imagine it's fun for replays.
SPOILER THOUGHTS BELOW THE CUT
LOVE the meta commentary on identity and autonomy in video games. Morgan is a little different between each reset in the early simulation, even though theoretically that shouldn't be possible. Characters constantly compare you to the Morgan they knew, whatever that means to them. Morgan the player character is a silent protagonist. Morgan the narrative character has several audio and video logs from their past and multiple robots with their voice. More broadly, each player will play a video game differently, even if they make similar choices. So is any playable character the same person between playthroughs? Is the player character narratively that person, or are they simply a vehicle that reflects what the player wants? It's no "would you kindly" but it's still interesting.
in theory i like the Nightmare. kind of a pyramid head type thing but more random. however there’s little incentive to defeat it and it’s easy to avoid, so it turned into a “wait for a 3 min timer to count down” simulator. also, if you accidentally spawn it in certain areas it can WRECK your ending (though it’s easy to reload).
so the Big Twist hints were pretty heavy handed. I figured it out early. It occurred to me after the first level that if the tutorial was a simulation, anything could be, and that was basically the big twisterino. Stuff like January saying "well good thing you're not an alien" in a super ironic tone of voice made me laugh out loud. Also, I did the Obvious Bad Ending for shits and giggles and it spoiled the whole thing. Really wish it had just cut to black since you can access it early. This potentially ruins any shock value for a lot of people.
on some level I like that the ending explains away certain "plot holes". Probably the most obvious is Morgan not remembering any of their past, which is... not how the neuromod memory loss works. But of course they wouldn't remember it, because the player is a Typhon going through a simulation, not the real Morgan.
you can also view the ending from the perspective of humans desperately trying to convince an alien they're worth saving, despite some "bad actors" (read: war crimes in space). Hence the sometimes on-the-nose moral choices and optional side quests. Even the fact that Morgan and Alex are characterized as total assholes in the past-- yet Alex in game and post credits is gentle and compassionate. Perhaps Alex in real life is trying to atone for his mistakes?
i kept expecting mirrors to be relevant? The Phantoms whisper about "what you see in the mirror", promo material shows Morgan looking at themself in the mirror, the Looking Glass tech, and the fact that mirrors are all over the place and DO NOT actually reflect Morgan. Which isn't a technical limitation since the Looking Glass is a whole thing. There's the whole mirror neuron thing but that's such a tiny line of dialogue I'm not sure it matters. Have to wonder if this was a story concept that got cut.
in a similar vein to "crap Phantoms say", there's a minor human character who just... says a bunch of Phantom lines in a row once you complete a quest. He’s seemingly unaware that he's echoing them. What was the purpose of this? Was this an abandoned plot thread?
why wasn't Dahl a bigger part of the story? or Alex and Morgan's parents? I assume it's due to a time crunch, but it just feels like a missed opportunity.
small detail: I love that one of the main story quests has you fake someone's voice using audio logs, and someone MUCH later uses the same trick against you.
another small detail which I missed: flying out to the space billboard to get an early horror twist about the fucking escape pods. there are lots of little things like that all over the place.

Title: Sisyphean Author: Anyawen Warnings: MCD (Major Character Death) Summary: Cause. And effect.
He had refused to give up when the signal was lost. If there were the slightest chance, the smallest trace, he would find and make use of it. He wrestled with technology, fought bureaucracy, and ignored his own limits. Like Orpheus, he followed a trail gone dark and cold to find the hell where his beloved was held. A team already en route for rescue, he activated a camera. Like Orpheus, his love was lost as he laid eyes on him. An indicator light on the camera blinked to life, betraying their surveillance, and they gained visuals only to watch his agent's execution. Unlike Orpheus when he lost his Eurydice, he did not fall prey to despair. He would not betray his lover's memory or dishonor his sacrifice by pining away. He channeled his grief into ingenuity, political savvy, fierce protectiveness, and an icy, vengeful fury. He focused on the interests of the country for which his lover had given his life, and the other agents who continued to risk everything in that same service. He would do everything in his power to keep them safe and bring them home. Gods have mercy on any who tried to stop him.

Title: Savvy Author: stormofsharpthings Warnings: no Archive warnings apply Summary: Bond is missing...
He couldn’t find James.
He’d often had to remind the newer techs that the double-oh agents might play dumb to get out of filing reports but the nature of their job these days required them to be almost as computer-savvy as Q Branch themselves. And Bond was more skilled than most, though he kept it quiet. So an unaccustomed panic threatened to overwhelm him the longer James was missing.
There was no trace despite hours of desperate searching through surveillance footage. He’d even hacked into dashboard-camera databases online. Bond had walked into that bloody meeting and all electronics had gone dark.
“If he were dead, there’d be a body!” he’d shouted at M. Other agents were out looking, but there was no evidence at the location. If Bond had been abducted, there was no rescue possible yet. Q refused to think of torture.
James would leave a sign...somehow...somewhere...if he could.
In frantic desperation, Q started checking logs of internet-connected devices. A smart bulb in an industrial warehouse was reporting an intermittent error, probably from faulty wiring, but Q mapped the errors and times from the online log and found a rough pattern: long long short long. Morse code for Q.
#3
Title: Blind Author: SouffleGirl91 Warnings: None. Summary: He couldn’t see.
He couldn’t see.
He needed to find them, but he couldn’t see.
Fear. A fist, seizing his heart. Squeezing his chest until all he could feel was sheer panic. Struggling to breathe.
A hundred scenarios ran through his mind, a warning of what might happen if he failed. Cyber attacks going unprevented. Terrorist attacks unthwarted. Agents dead. All because of him.
Because the Quartermaster wasn’t at his post.
He needed to find them. The Quartermaster needed to return to his post.
But he couldn’t see.
Where were they? All the intel said they would be here. They must be here. They had to be.
What if they weren’t?
How would he explain?
What would he say when M asked him why the Quartermaster was missing?
There was no other option, he had to find them. He couldn’t give up.
But he couldn’t see.
Blindly, he reached out, feeling around. His fingers brushed over the debris of a life interrupted. He recoiled as his hand came into contact with a pool of liquid. Still warm.
Oh, God!
More urgently now, he sought, knocking things aside. There wasn't enough time!
There!
Q put on his glasses, finally ready to face the day.
#4
Title: Tennyson Author: sorion Warnings: - Summary: Bond loves more easily than he would like to.
‘Tis better to have loved and lost Than never to have loved at all.
"What utter nonsense," Bond said, drink in hand. It wasn't his first. Nor his second.
If he could travel back in time, he'd choose not to love. Every time.
Love brought him nothing but betrayal and pain. How could loving and losing be better than never loving in the first place? He wouldn't be blind to the inevitable betrayal (and death) without love.
Today's reason for the drinks was that time travel didn't exist, and Bond had once more been confronted with the frustrating fact that he couldn't not love, time and again. Much as he would have liked to.
"Just how drunk are you?" someone asked, sidling up to his solitary spot at the bar.
'Not drunk enough to purge you from my system,' Bond thought. Despite his best efforts and iron will, he made the mistake of lifting his head, meeting questioning but undemanding eyes.
Reflected in those eyes, he found the truth that love was as much his constant companion as death. Neither weakness nor enemy, but the backbone of his very nature.
"Perhaps... 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world."
#5
Title: Hunger Author: sunaddicted Warnings: canon typical violence, toxic relationships Summary: the truth hurts more than a bullet wound He pursed his lips, eyes contemplating the ruin spread out at his feet: his life, his career, his dreams - everything lay shattered on the ground, all of his hard work and his striving aspirations turned to dust. "Hungry - you were always hungry for more than you can chew, clever boy" Q pursed his lips, refusing to look at the other - stubbornly staring out at the moors, fog slowly raising from the earth like poisonous vapours "It's your fault, Raoul" "Shut up" "It wasn't the plan!" "¡Callate!" Suddenly there was the cold circle of a gun's barrel pressed in the middle of his forehead - so icy that it almost burned against his skin. Q swallowed, tightening his hands in fists that would do nothing to protect him from a bullet straight to the brain "She doesn't give a shit about you, she never has" Raoul sneered "And you do?" "Yes, I do" Raoul laughed, derisive and cruel: it hurt more than a bullet ever would but Q wasn't giving up on him - he wasn't sure he could; yielding under pressure and escaping just wasn't an option, they were together for life, inextricably bound together. No matter how deadly Raoul's love was.
#6
Title: Lost and Found Author: Ksania / starrboned Warnings: implied canon-typical violence Summary: James made a promise he couldn't keep.
James finds him kneeling in the ruins, a dark silhouette against the fiery sky.
His sword makes a quiet "slink!" as he unsheathes it, flaring in the dying light. The blade's pale as it kisses Q's neck.
"Hello, James," Q says. "I hoped it would be you who'd find me."
Waves clash beneath them, salt heavy in the air.
"Nothing to say?" Q asks. "You always were a man of few words."
"They're coming," James breathes, watching as Q rises to his feet, turning.
His eyes are bloodshot, face pale. Black cloak hanging from skinny shoulders. A shadow of the man who held James's heart.
"James." Q cracks a smile. "You promised."
Once upon a time, when they were a Queen's mage and her knight.
James grips his sword, knuckles white.
He lets the blade drop. "I'm not killing you."
"You must." Q takes a step closer. "You know what she'll do -"
Footsteps approach. James pulls Q into his arms.
"Then we both die!" Q hisses, clutching at his cloak. "And everything was for naught!"
"So be it," James smiles, kissing him. "We both knew it was going to end this way."
Q sighs. "They're here."
James raises his sword.
#7
Title: Adamant Author: IrishWitch58 (captain-magicalkitty) Warning: Effects of violence Summary: Q ponders the similarities between himself and 007
The monitors beeped steadily, monotonously. Q hated the sound that screamed the fallibility of his systems, that made him face the ways in which he couldn't keep his agents safe. He shifted in the chair, the same he had occupied for the past 10 hours. He was connected to his branch, overseeing ongoing activities but that mattered less than the silent battered figure in the hospital bed. James had once again both succeeded and failed in that spectacular fashion that made him the best MI6 had. The mission goal had been accomplished but the medical evac had been a skin of the teeth exercise. More damage done, more scars. Bond's resume was written clearly on his body, scars upon scars marring the skin Q valued more than his own. Q acknowledged that his technological efforts could only do so much. It was the indomitable spirit of the man that was at issue. His nature was to push beyond the known and see for himself and to never give in to circumstance. In his own way, Q was the same, which was why he would sit and wait and plan how to avoid the next disaster, as unyielding as any agent.

Title: The End Author: Venstar Warnings: angst(?) Summary: farewells.
It was all coming to a close with this next mission. It was a death trap. Once he went in, there was no coming out.
“Duty calls, I must go.”
“That's bollocks.”
007 smiled down at Q and brushed a finger across his chin and down his jaw. “This will be your first resurrection to witness, won’t it? Every story has an ending.”
“There’s only one 007 in my books.”
007 laughed at the jokes Q valiantly made with effort.
Q’s eyes narrowed and his lips compressed into a straight line. “I’ll find a way to get you back.”
“Seek and you will not find me,” Bond whispered, “It will be a new 007 when you finally yield to the inevitable.”
“Never!”
“So they replace me and they will replace you.”
Q shook his head. “We could leave. Would that be so terrible?”
007 looked at Q with pity in his eyes. “That would be treasonous.”
“It’s not like you’ve never skipped town before!” Q blurted out, his cheeks red.
“I am no traitor.”
“No, you’re a loyal dog. Now I understand why M kept that hideous thing on her table.” Q spat his words at 007’s feet.
“Goodbye, Q.”

Title: Never Yielding Author: iambid (flantastic) Warnings: None Summary: James is bullish, Q just wants him to stop.
Q waited for him outside M’s office.
“What the hell, Bond?”
James didn’t miss a step as he carried on down the corridor forcing Q to trot to keep up with him.
“James! Talk to me!” He pleaded.
James stopped abruptly and whirled around.
“About what? What exactly would you like to talk about?”
“This!” Q responded hotly, gesturing. “Why are you going back out into the field?”
“Because they need me.” James snapped.
“But I thought…”
“What exactly? That a gunshot wound would put me out of action permanently? That I would want to spend the rest of my days hanging around your house like some kind of rescue dog? I have a job to do, Quartermaster.”
He went to turn but Q grabbed his wrist.
“What about us?” Q asked quietly.
“There is no us.” James said and then, when he saw the hurt in Q’s eyes, he added; “It was a dream. Thank you for taking me in and taking care of me, but it can’t continue.” He looked down at Q’s hand, still resting on his wrist, and regretfully shook it off. “People like me don’t deserve people like you,” he said sadly before walking away.

Title: ghost Author: azure7539 Warnings: none Summary: Question and answer.
-
What went wrong?
By the time he arrives, there’s nothing of value left. He takes in the sight of the cramped room—one bare mattress in the corner, energy bar wrappings pushed into a pile, empty water bottles strewn around the floor—and stops at the coffee table. The near humid scent of cigarettes lingers in the air, unseen but winds like spidery gossamer, spooling from the crushed fags in that full ashtray next to an abandoned laptop.
His eye twitches.
Barely gone but not within chasing distance, his mind grudgingly concludes, and he sits down on the cracked tiles with a grunt. Despite the Caribbean sun flaring outside an unrelenting spot of heat as it pierced in through the windows, the place sustains a perpetual coolness that settles on his shoulders a phantom weight.
Really, he should worry more about potential booby traps in the laptop, but the thought doesn’t even stir his apprehension, and he opens it anyway.
The words he finds on the screen seize his breath before flickering back into an empty void.
His earpiece crackles to life with a hissing fit. “Status report.”
“He’s gone,” Bond growls, shutting the device with a harsh click.
/I went wrong./

Title: The Perfect Gift Author: Shush_MummyWriting Warnings: None Summary: "to strive, to seek, to find, but not to yield."
The moment he saw her, he knew she was perfect.
Madelaine was not just beautiful, but brave, smart and had a backbone of steel. Knowing her background, she was the ideal partner for an old warhorse like James Bond.
Q felt the tiny flame that had been nurtured by every bit of banter, every special look sent his way, every promise extracted, compounded by every risk he had taken for Bond, flicker and die.
When he returned to his favourite workstation in the bowels of Q Branch, the information he had requested from the Archives had already arrived. Q had followed Bond’s career even before their first official meeting and as he looked over the old blueprints, he realised this would be the perfect farewell gift for Bond.
Besides, it would make an excellent project for the Garage minions. With a little creative accounting, sketches already flowing from his fingers to his screen, he would pour every ounce of his brilliance into the DB5 and it would be ready when Bond got back.
Then Q would be able put all those inconvenient feelings behind him and say good-bye to James Bond, with a smile, like the friend that he was.

Title: 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world Author: scarytheory Warnings: mention of character death, depression Summary: James's got his happily ever after with Madeleine. Still – he's struggling every day.
...you should know-
James wakes up from a nightmare, panicking, trying to catch his breath. Madeleine is used to it by now. She just whispers ‘you're safe, you're home’, still half-asleep. But he gets up and pours himself some whisky because he doesn't know what home means anymore.
Everything is blurred. Maybe he made the wrong choice. Even though she's here, and he loves her.
But he's still thinking about that phone call. It's been six months, and he can't stop thinking about it.
“Q died. I thought you should know.”
Wrong home.
More whisky.
And more nightmares.
There is a weird inner ache that James can't even name; he is too afraid to do so. A little bit of it belongs to Madeleine because they can't be happy together; it will never be enough. It's also about Q because James failed him. He knew and he left anyway, left everything that could have been.
But mostly it's about James himself. Because he's so tired and scared to go back and fight again. But in the end, he knows that he will do what he always does.
Not yield.
Not yet.
Even though the whisky is burning in his throat.

Title: Unyielding Author: AtoTheBean Warnings: None Summary: Q will hate that fucking poem for the rest of his life...
“You’re going to lose him.”
“I’m not,” Bond grunts over the comms.
“Repositioning 006 to intercept,” Q replies, signaling to R.
He looks back at the screen to find Bond has stolen a motorbike.
“007, stand down. The plaza’s too crowded.”
“All the more reason to stay with the bomb.”
Q sighs, switching screens to an aerial view. Bond’s so stubborn since his return.
Though, not at first. At first he was accommodating… practically deferential…. And Q was unyielding in his anger. It’s taken months to find their rapport... for Q to acknowledge they still make a good team, ignoring the dull ache of what else he wishes they might be.
“Approaching the bridge.”
“I see you,” Q says, refocusing.
“Good place to douse a bomb...”
“But how would…” Cold dread fills Q. 007 is still fast, but even he acknowledges his reaction times have slowed...
The motor revs. “'We're not now that strength which in old days—’.”
“James Bond, don’t you dare quote Tennyson at me!”
Q watches Bond grab the mark—
“JAMES!”
—and hurl them both off the bridge. He hears the rush of wind, a splash, and then static.
The water-muffled explosion on the screen is silent.

Title: The Balad of Sir Bond Author: ladymars Warnings: Implied Major Character Death Summary: A prince seeks for his knight.
Lady Moneypenny, from her kneel and still wearing her tattered armor, presented a scrap of burnt fabric to her prince. "This is all we found of him, Your Highness." Cold ice ran through the prince's veins. His breath left him. "No, that can't be..." "I saw him go into that cave myself," the knight interrupted, her voice tight, "I told him we should return, call for reinforcements, but he pushed inside." "Stubborn bastard..." Sir Bond had escaped from dire situations, deadly situations, returned to life with a smirk, a swagger, and the head of their enemy in hand (never his sword, of course, always losing and breaking those), but from a man-eating monster? Of course he's stupid enough to jump in without hesitation. Something pushed the prince up from his throne and to his feet. He staggered as if grief had possessed him and moved his limbs like the automatons he assembled, a yearning pulling him forward. "I'll find him. He's out there. I'll search the ends of the world for him." Moneypenny paled. "But sir—" "No!" His voice did not sound like his own, strangled and high. "He's out there!" A fury flickered in his eyes. "I'll never yield."

Another Strange Visit
A/N: Hello! Just thought I’d drop in to reassure you that I haven’t completely given up on tumblr yet. So, here’s one of the fanfictions I’ve posted on Archiveofourown during my away period. If you want to read it there, here’s the link. If you want to read it here, then read away.
A lot of my Dishonored 2 fanfictions are my way of addressing some of the things that annoyed me in the writing. In this case, it’s the fact that Emily never answered back to Delilah in the Void when the latter was telling her backstory. She should have at least tried to defend her mother’s actions and Jessamine’s voice sounded fearful, not sneaky, when she accused Delilah of breaking the ornament so it’s obvious to me she did it to avoid punishment than any deliberate malice.
Speaking of which, that’s a stupid reason to kick off the whole revenge against the Kaldwins plot so I added a more satisfying one.
Right, I’d better stop there or I’ll give the whole thing away.
“But, I want to come to court like Jessamine.”
“I told you, dear, when you’re older. Perhaps, next year.”
“You said that last year! Jessamine’s younger than me and she’s at court every day.”
“Jessamine is – well, it’s complicated. You’ll understand someday.”
“What did I do? I’ll be good, I swear.”
“Next year, I promise.”
The vision faded in blue flames and a bridge to the next platform emerged. However, Emily did not follow the path at once. She looked around for Delilah but, seeing nothing, she settled for speaking to the Void in general.
“You do know Euhorn Kaldwin was never going to keep that promise, don’t you? No one would ever allow the daughter of a kitchen maid at court.”
“Of course, I know that now.” Delilah’s disembodied voice retorted, “But, I was a child and my mother had taught me that a promise was a promise. How was I to know then how much pleasure men took in toying with a young girl’s hopes?”
“I’m not saying it was right.”
Delilah deigned not to answer and the bridge remained in place so Emily had no choice but to go on to the next vision.
*
“I didn’t break it!”
“Would you like to tell me who did?”
“We were just playing.”
“Young Lady Jessamine? What’s your account of the matter?”
“It was her! Delilah’s lying. She broke it.”
The vision of her mother as a child faded but not the stab in Emily’s heart. She could not let her mother go undefended.
“My mother was just a child. She only wanted to avoid trouble. You would have done in the same in that position.”
“True,” Delilah replied without reappearing again, “but who would have believed me? Against the word of a princess, the word of a servant is worth less than nothing!”
Emily could not reply but stalked to the next island.
*
“My mother is sick. She needs help.”
“Your mother kicked off while you were out begging. She’s another bag of bones now, girl.”
“What? No!”
“Her sentence is served and she’ll be tossed out with the others. You can’t stay here anymore.”
The last vision faded and a white portal appeared before her but Emily didn’t move an inch. She whirled around and faced the Void.
“All this over a broken ornament and an empty promise? I’m sorry you suffered. Truly, I am. But your revenge isn’t worth all the chaos you’ve caused.”
This time, Delilah reappeared in a flash of flame and shadow, her arms folded and a scornful look on her face, “You’re hardly one to talk. Are you about to tell me that all that silver in Dunwall Tower is worth all those dead Karnacan miners?”
Not even the piercing cold of the Void could stop Emily’s face burning. She knew it wasn’t a good idea to goad Delilah, even at that moment, but she could not leave the Void without trying to wipe that smirk off her face.
“I hope you’re not relying on your father’s promise to secure your legitimacy. Anyone could tell you that bastard daughters of servants can’t be Empresses.”
“And, where does that logic leave you?” Delilah’s smirk grew wider, “The bastard daughter of a Serkonan guttersnipe?”
“My mother and father were married when I was born. They kept it secret because no one would approve - ”
Delilah cut her off, “Ha! That marriage certificate was forged by your father just before your coronation to stop anyone casting doubts on your legitimacy. It hardly matters now, of course. If you had just stayed in the Tower like a good girl, you’d know by now that the record no longer exists.”
An isolated rational pocket of Emily’s mind ordered her not to rise but her anger was too hot to leave without one last shot, “Even if my parents weren’t married, they at least loved each other. I don’t know about relations between Emperors and maids personally but I know the maids generally don’t get a choice in the matter.”
She got the brief pleasure of seeing Delilah’s smirk vanish and a dull flush creep up her wasted cheeks. Then, her face hardened, “And, what makes you think Jessamine’s parents was any different? Nobility cant choose who they wed. Not even the daughter of a Tyvian High Judge can say no to an Emperor, whether it’s at the alter or the bedchamber. I’m living proof of what their marriage truly was.” Delilah spoke over Emily, “Emperor Euhorn Kaldwin preferred the company of obedient maids over his headstrong wife. He only got her with child to stop her leaving him and causing a scandal he could ill-afford. They thought Jessamine’s birth would solve their difficulties but they were very mistaken.”
She went on with the air of someone who’d been dying to let it all out for years, “My mother told me just before she died what Euhorn’s promise to me really meant. He used me as a threat to his wife and daughter. If they didn’t give him his way in everything, he’d threaten to disinherit Jessamine and legitimise me as his heir. So, Empress Beatrix got her revenge the only way she could: by never losing an opportunity to remind me for my place or,” Her eyes flashed with rage, “to get rid of me. She and the Spymaster knew Jessamine had broken the ornament but they didn’t care. Jessamine had handed them the opportunity to throw out Euhorn’s pawn on a silver plate! She probably did it willingly too, bribed by sweeties and pretty dresses.”
Delilah paused for breath, glowering at Emily with all the accumulated rage towards every member of the Kaldwin family. Before Emily could think of the best response, she composed herself and sneered, “What makes you so sure your father and mother were in love in the first place? Your father may have been her Royal Protector but he was still a servant for all that and, as you said a moment ago, servants don’t get a choice in these matters.”
Emily’s head felt like it was going to explode. Yet, she managed to restrain herself from shouting her last strike at Delilah, “I know my father loved my mother. He still loves her, even fifteen years after her death. I don’t think you can say the same for your parents, can you?”
SMACK!
Delilah closed the distance between them in a heartbeat and the force of her blow nearly knocked Emily off the platform. She tried to get back onto steady footing but wasn’t quick enough. Delilah’s hands, as cold as the Void and firm as the stone beneath them, clamped around her neck.
“Your mother and grandmother loved nothing better than demeaning me too. You’ll end up as they did soon enough, whether by the Duke’s forces or mine! Now, you misbegotten unmanageable whelp, get out of my sight!” She flung Emily backwards into the white portal and the Void was gone. Instead, the ceiling of her cabin came into view and a throbbing pain bloomed where her head had hit the floor.
Well, Emily thought as she picked herself up and rearranged the hair, I suppose that went a little better that my last meeting with Delilah.
She felt a tug at her left hand and the Heart materialised by itself. With it, pale as an opal, the spirit of her mother appeared. Emily flushed. For a moment, she thought she was going to a reprimand for her belligerence.
“I am with you, even in the Void. If only I could do more. If only I had done more. My mother told me that, if I blamed Delilah for something very bad, she would take me on a tour of the Isles. It wasn’t until much later that I realised what a terrible thing I had done. I am to blame for Delilah’s bitterness.”
“It wasn’t your fault.” Emily asserted, “You didn’t ask to be a pawn in your parents’ war.” On another thought, she added, “No more than Delilah did. Besides, Delilah chose to hold onto her grudge. She could have let it go and made the best of what she had without venting her misery on everyone else but here we are.”
“Our decisions have weight. I feel my time drawing to an end. Soon.”
Bit by bit, she vanished away, as did the Heart from Emily’s hand. In front of her was her desk, her travel log open. She slumped into her seat and began to write:
‘Things to do when I’m back in Dunwall:
1 - Make sure the workers of the Isles are well-cared for, no matter what the cost.
2 – Listen to servants more often and believe them more often.
3 – Marry Wyman immediately.’
She felt she fully understood why her mother had never married a noble, not even for appearances, to legitimise Emily or for power. Her mother had seen what marrying for political reasons did and learned that the accompanying personal strife would far outweigh any political advantage. She also knew that making her marriage to Corvo public would cause uproar in the nobility. So, she had compromised brilliantly, following her heart and navigating her way around scandal with distinction.
Emily vowed to follow her example.
A/N: It's not unreasonable to think that it was a marriage arranged to unify the Isles during the Morley Insurrection. In addition, Euhorn needed a well-born, well-connected wife to strengthen his claim to the throne so it's quite realistic to think that it was a marriage of convenience that was a better idea on paper than it was in practise. The very fact that Delilah exists in the first place and was born before Jessamine on top of that suggests it wasn't a happy union.
Not to mention, it's well-known how damaging a toxic marriage can be to their children and even their children's children, long after they're gone.

Prey 2 Audio Logs Reveal Where Tommy's Story Might Have Gone

Prey 2 Audio Logs Reveal Where Tommy's Story Might Have Gone
Newly released audio logs from the cancelled sequel to 2006’s Prey have shone light on the game that never was.Available to listen to here courtesy of digital games curator Andrew Borman, the logs are voiced by Prey 2’s
lead character, Killian Samuels. It suggests he would have teamed up with the Tommy – the protagonist from the first game – to escape Exodus.
“I’m not alone,” Samuels tells the log. “There’s another living human on this godforsaken rock. To tell the truth, I thought I was having another breakdown at first. He walked right up to me on the street, right onto the sea of alien faces and just held out his hand. ‘I’m Tommy,’ he said. Like it was the most natural thing in the world. Strange to hear real English again instead of the auto translator. I’d almost forgotten what it sounded like.”
The uploaded audio also reveal a second version of this log, which goes into more detail on how Tommy and Samuels would have met in the first place.
“We’re not alone. After all this time I found another human being on Exodus, or rather, he found me. Says his name is Tommy. I don’t know how the hell he got here. Says he’s been travelling a long time and he’s come here in search of the Sphere. I don’t know where the hell this guy’s been hiding.
“Slave ships stopped running shortly after I got here. None of the people they brought from Earth survived for more than a year except for me. That was – god that was decades ago. Tommy says he’s only been on Earth for a few hours. Clothes look brand new. Right now I don’t know what to think.”
Deathloop E3 2019 Reveal Screenshots
Before Arkane’s reimagining of Prey in 2017, a sequel to the original game was on the cards. Prey 2 was originally in development at 3D Realms and then transferred to Human Head after Bethesda’s parent company, Zenimax Media, bought the rights to the series. However, in 2014 Bethesda formally swung its axe on the sequel, saying it didn’t meet its expectations.
Arkane’s reboot of the series kept nothing from the original game, meaning these audio logs are the only hint we have of how the loose ends in Tommy’s story would have been tied up.
To peek further behind the curtain of Bethesda’s development studios, check out this video of Wolfenstein and Dishonored’s developers playing each other’s games or scroll through the slideshow above to see stills from Arkane’s next game, Deathloop.

a rambling about my life, multiplayer games, and pacing in Red Dead 2
I'm about to turn 31, and unless a multiplayer game is absolutely exceptional it's very hard for me to play them. When I was around 25/26 I could sense that I was losing an edge playing Team Fortress 2 (turns out it's science, those twitch muscle fibers) which I had played about 3k hours of. I've always had issues with anxiety as well, and online games started to feed into it more than help. Multiplayer games became more and more toxic, and the idea of competing, seeing who is the best, became a very stressful concept. I still loved video games immensely, so I started perusing for games that could help me relax and still be fun. Thus I began to dive much deeper into the single player pool than I ever had before.
It was around this time that Journey was released, and it was a game that came out at the exact right time for me. It was an epiphany. Then The Walking Dead came out, followed by The Last of Us. I went back and played Bastion which was amazing. I listened to my roommate who told me I would love Red Dead Redemption 1, which was brilliant, even though at this point, in 2015, the graphics had become slightly dated and gameplay seemed just a little bit shallow. I played Dishonored, Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, and Stardew Valley quite a bit (turns out 2016 was awesome for single player games). I also played Persona 4 Golden on my recently acquired second-hand Vita (original version, dat OLED screen baby). I wasn't deep into Giant Bomb at this point so I hadn't watch any of the endurance run, I had just heard that P4G was brilliant. It took the title off of Journey as my favorite single player game, and held the title for a long time... until 3 weeks ago.
I KNOW, I KNOW. Red Dead Redemption 2 is hitting a decent amount of people as a "B+ tier" game. The most common complaint I see is just the general meandering pace. It takes this long to do X, you can't fast travel easily, you can only walk at camp, etc. A few hours in and I was butting my head against the slow pace as well, and I knew I had to make a decision. This game had ridiculously good critical reviews, and from all accounts the narrative was just as good as, if not better, than Red Dead 1 (this would be the 27th, the day after it came out.). The decision I had to make was either quit playing the game, or fully embrace it's speed, or lack thereof.
In retrospect, I think the fact that I had just platinumed AC Odyssey had a lot to do with why I had been bouncing off the pace so much. AC Odyssey is very much the "Willy Wonkas Chocolate Room" of open world games. It's vibrant and full, and every 2 steps there is a different candy to eat. Unfortunately the candy is a Hershey's Chocolate Bar. It's still chocolate so it's tasty, but it's a bit bland, too much to eat, and will give you diabetes. As I was writing that analogy I was trying to think of a candy that RDR2 represents and it's humorously difficult. Red Dead Redemption isn't a dessert, it's a full meal. You get your deliciously cooked steak, your well paired potatoes, but you also get a healthy serving of broccoli. It's gross and it looks like a tree, but in the long run it's very good for you. Red Dead 2's story is the steak, it's side quests the potatoes, and its slow pace is the broccoli. Steak and potatoes are great, everyone loves them. Perfectly seasoned and a staple of quality food. Then you have to eat your greens. It's difficult to eat them at first, but eventually you begin to accept it. You start seeing the long-term positive results and understand why your parents forced you to eat them. If you let yourself embrace the pace of this game it truly turns into the top tier game that it is.
You'll start to not only listen to your gangs conversations as you walk by, but even sit down on a log and just listen. You won't get any XP, unlock a new weapon, or gain any perks, but the writing and characters are so excellently crafted that it is worth it. You begin to understand that if you never ate your broccoli you would miss out on what the heart of this game is: immersion. Eventually it just clicks and you're a 30 year old happily ordering broccoli with your lunch. As a child you only wanted chocolate; you hadn't noticed the delicate balance of pepper, garlic, and lemon juice that your mom used until you were older and wise enough to appreciate it.
All I'm trying to say is this: it's difficult at first, but if you just embrace the pace that Red Dead Redemption 2 seems to thrust upon you it can be a magical experience.

Another Strange Visit
Note: This is the first of what I call ‘how I would have written Dishonored 2′ fics. Don’t get me wrong, I love Dishonored 2 but I do feel there are quite a few things that could have been done a lot better.
In this case, it’s my re-imagining of Emily being pulled into the Void to get a monologue from Delilah. I really think Emily ought to have answered back at some point either to defend her mother or to point out a few obvious things. And, I like to think there was more behind Delilah’s banishment from Dunwall Tower than just a broken ornament.
She could not take in this revelation quietly.
How was I to know then how much pleasure men took in toying with the hopes of young girls?”
The vision of her mother as a child faded but not the sting of it in Emily’s heart. She could not let her mother go undefended.
“My mother was just a child. She only wanted to avoid getting in trouble.
She could not leave without one last word.
Anyone would tell you that bastard daughters of servants can’t be Empresses.”
“And, where does that logic leave you?” Delilah’s smirk grew wider, “The bastard daughter of Serkonan peasantry?”
“My mother and father were married when I was born. They kept it secret because no one would approve - ”
Delilah cut her off, “Ha! That marriage certificate was forged by your father just before your coronation. It hardly matters now, of course. If you had stayed in the Tower like a good girl, you’d know by now that the record no longer exists.”
She got the brief pleasure of seeing Delilah’s smirk vanish to be replaced with a dull flush in her wasted cheeks. Then, her face hardened, “And, what makes you think Jessamine’s parents was any different? Nobility can’t choose who they wed. Not even the daughter of a Tyvian High Judge can say no to an Emperor, whether it’s at the alter or the bedchamber.
“I’m the living proof of what their marriage truly was.” Delilah spoke over Emily, “Emperor Euhorn Kaldwin preferred the company of obedient maids over his headstrong wife. He only got her with child to stop her leaving him.
Probably did it willingly too.”
She paused for breath, glowering at Emily with all the accumulated rage towards every member of the Kaldwin family. Before Emily could think of the best response, Delilah composed herself and sneered, “What makes you so sure your father and mother were in love in the first place? Your father may have been her Royal Protector but he was still a servant for all that and, as you said a moment ago, servants don’t get a choice in these matters.”
Emily’s head felt like it was going to explode. Yet, she managed to restrain herself from shouting her last strike at Delilah, “I know my father loved my mother. He still loves her, even fifteen years after her death. I don’t think you can say the same for your father.”
SMACK!
Delilah closed the distance between them in a heartbeat and the force of her blow nearly knocked Emily off the platform. She tried to steady herself through the needling pain but wasn’t quick enough. Delilah’s hands, as cold as the Void and firm as the stone beneath them, clamped around her neck.
“Your mother and grandmother loved nothing better than demeaning me too. You’ll end up as they did soon enough, whether by the Duke’s forces or mine! Now, misbegotten unmanageable whelp, get out of my sight!” She flung Emily backwards into the white portal and the Void was gone. Instead, the ceiling of her cabin came into view and a throbbing pain bloomed where her head had hit the floor.
Well, Emily thought as she picked herself up and rearranged the disordered bedclothes, I suppose that went a little better that my last meeting with Delilah. Father always told me that they who anger you conquer you.
She felt a tug at her left hand and the Heart materialised by itself. With it, pale as an opal, the spirit of her mother appeared. Emily flushed. For a moment, she thought she was going to a reprimand.
“I am with you, even in the Void. If only I could do more. If only I could have done more. My mother told me that, if I broke something valuable and blamed Delilah, she would take me on a tour of the Isles.
Besides, Delilah’s the one who orchestrated the coup. She could have let it go but here we are.”
“Our decisions have weight. I feel my time drawing to an end. Soon.”
Bit by bit, she vanished away, as did her vessel from Emily’s hand.
She felt she fully understood why her mother had never married, not even for appearances or power. Her mother had seen what marrying for political reasons did and learned that the personal strife would far outweigh any political advantage. She also knew that making her marriage to Corvo public would cause uproar in the nobility. So, she had compromised brilliantly. She had found a way to follow her heart and navigate her way around political uproar with distinction.
Emily vowed to follow her example.
