Armando ascends the throne to no fanfare. He is not loved, he is not looked to, he is not even noticed. At first.
Then comes the day he sends out five letters, to every corner of Karnaca. Each one delivered with a painting.
To Doctor Hypatia, he sends a delicately painted bloodfly, the dangerous but key ingredient in healing this city.
To Aramis Stilton, a portrait of the late Duke Theodanis, not posing as a political figurehead, but relaxing in a garden.
To Paolo, leader of the Howlers, he sends an architectural painting, of the old location of the Crone's Hand Saloon, restored to its glory days overlooking the Canal.
To Overseer Byrne, he sends a somber painting of a wolfhound sleeping at the foot of an empty bed.
And to Lucia Pastor, protector of the miners, a landscape. The great entrance to the Silver Mines, set into the lush Karnacan mountainside, a symbol of strength at the heart of this land.
He does not invite them to the palace. Instead, he goes out to meet them, to see their work, to hold the worn and weary hands of the people they look after. And though he may never hang the respect he earns on his own name, he earns it all the same. He takes all of that care and returns it to the people—his people, and that is a role that no one can take away from him.
