every time i read a fic where lily evans is upheld as a paragon of justice and the underdogs and the vulnerable, i die a little inside
bc,,,,are we talking ab the same gal who kept defending snape for atleast five years of hogwarts and however many before that? who overlooked his bigoted actions, even when others called it/her out on it?
ugh
(now james, on the other hand? we have such clear evidence that he fits this archetype but ofc that’s overlooked isn’t it. gonna shut up here but will take the rant into the tags)

Sometimes I get the feeling that people in this fandom don’t understand the meaning of an oath.
The Asoiaf world may be fantasy, but it is still based on real-life medieval setting.
In European medieval times, the values of the Church were held in high regard, and a person’s word actually meant something. When someone made a promise/an oath, especially a noble, it was expected of that person to honor it. Failure to do so resulted in dire consequences.
It’s not like it is now in modern 21st century, when everyone makes promises they end up breaking eventually and it’s like *shrug* “oh well, too bad” and no consequences follow.
So, when the Lords of the Realm swore oaths to uphold the ascension of Rhaenyra Targaryen on the Iron Throne, they were not at all “stale” or “meaningless”, as Otto Hightower tries to argue (that’s modern mentality and kind of poor writing on the part of the showrunners). It’s a pledge made in the name of a House.
And just because some of the Lords who swore those oaths died, that doesn’t mean that those oaths died with them (as the Lannisters, who have no honor whatsoever, try to argue). The oaths were made on behalf of Houses, not individuals, and therefore, the Houses as a whole were expected to respect them.
The reason Rhaenyra Targaryen had most of the Realm on her side is because the majority of Westerosi Houses understand the meaning of an oath. They also acknowledge that with the absence of an actual succession law, Rhaenyra Targaryen is the rightful Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

"You didn't think I'd miss this did you?"
Guess who flew in. Jar'ath heard Tahny finally dropped into the Clone bar and had to see it for himself. (and tease her about it)
So uh... who hasn't officially met T's brother from another mother?

i was thinking about the archangels and how fucked up being possessed by one of them would be and this was created. headcanons on what each (non-bloodline) vessel would go through while possessed! bon appétit
-
michael
their vessel runs hot, grace a constant thrum under the skin that imitates a heartbeat well enough for those unaware not to notice. the blue glow that takes over their eyes upon the slightest provocation calms only when their enemies are on the ground, enochian seared into what’s left of their skin once the light dies down.
the heat that follows them shapes the air into wings too big for the space they’re in, even in the most expansive fields earth has. they have to watch out when stepping on grass, or stretching their wings too far into the trees, or fire will follow them too.
eventually it starts to burn, whatever body they’re in. the grace running through its veins turns closer to lava with each passing day, flares deep inside its chest and expands down to its hands when their anger rises. bruises showing up in blues no matter how old they are, burns in its skin hot to the touch.
a smell of fire and smoke follows them when they leave the vessel, and they set ablaze anything in their path on the way to a new body. the largest fires are caused by their rage, charred eyes and hearts left behind on their path.
-
lucifer
there's something freezing under their skin, somehow encompassing entire rooms and digging into the skin of everyone around them. the air around them is cold enough to kill, frostbite reaching others before turning their own vessel's hands red with it. its lips are bitten red and raw because the taste of blood is almost intoxicating.
garbled enochian slips through in a constant downpour, because they are an angel and won't taint their tongue with a human language despite the way it burns their vessel's mouth. the easiest way to find them is following the trail of frozen footsteps and the scent of rust so strong it can be tasted.
the hypothermia that sets after some time is what leads them to find a new body, when the one they are wearing becomes too sluggish and their grace starts slipping through the dry cracks in its skin. all that's left is a cold body with its eyes frozen shut.
the earth bleeds on their path, water freezes red by being in their proximity, plants burn and die from the frost. their grace whips through the air and leaves bloody slashes in the skin of anyone who dares get in their way, the wounds never closing completely.
-
raphael
their electricity can be felt under the skin of their vessel, sometimes shocking those who try landing their hands on it. their presence makes people’s hair stand on end, their voice resonates through the room in a way that makes it impossible to ignore. the fissures that appear on its skin from one day to the next are eerily similar to lightning.
the eyes of their vessel gain an unnatural brightness, something fiery that is just wrong when compared to the decaying state of the rest its body. their words flow in a way that’s almost hypnotic, calming until the next strike of their blade.
an ill-suited vessel can’t hold them for long. the tremors starting in its hands show that, as do the bouts of dizziness that hit them every so often. by the time their vessel starts losing its sight they have a new victim picked, their electricity having already eroded the brain of the previous.
it seems as if thunderstorms follow their grace, both rain and lightning falling close but never hitting them. wildfires start in their wake, raindrops never quite reaching their destination, and the injured miraculously recovering in hours.
-
gabriel
there’s a wind hiding under their skin, usually unnoticeable to the common eye. they’re light on their feet, eyes travelling through every corner of the room they’re in, the air around them somehow feeling heavy with the power they chase. at times it blows stronger, the whole of them looking longer, bigger than their vessel, but it doesn’t last long anymore.
their vessel’s skin grows dry with time, tearing open with each snap of their fingers, grace pouring from its hands and giving life to lilies wherever it falls. all of their vessels’ hands are burnt by the time they leave, skin too fragile to handle their grace.
erosion is what kills their bodies, the debris that always seems to fly back towards them easily chipping away at flesh and bone. what’s left of the body after they take their leave isn’t enough to keep it alive, not with the dust coating its lungs.
tornadoes follow the path of their grace, leaving destruction and chaos between their vessels. they are angry, and they are frustrated, and the mayhem they create is the singular way they can be heard. the debris lifted by their rage is flung as far as their grace can reach.

#spn archangels#supernatural#spn#alright time for the rant in tags#michael's whole thing was inspired by this really cool phenomenon called blue lava... it's actually fire in its majority though#lucifer got the blood falls from antarctica based on their little comment in swan song about actually being cold#raphael's is the dry thunderstorm cause they (the storms) are really cool and i feel they (raphael) should get to actually destroy some >>#<< stuff with their lightning#gabriel's inspiration was the dust devil (which i spent a good ten minutes laughing about) but also tornadoes in general#i lost inspiration with them a bit but i think gabe would probably be the most human of the four?? so he would be a little more normal#also i think each would have preferences of who to possess...#michael picks people who are dying or fighters when they're possessing out of the bloodline#they looked at adam and saw a little pet... both died and was a fighter... also looked directly at their form... pet vessel#lucifer likes messing around with people who fell in some way... or are disgraced#they hop onto powerful people from time to time if it's necessary... also spent a bunch of time hopping at random#raphael possesses unhealthy people.. and then leaves them in a worse state <3 but at least they can't feel it (in raphael's mind)#probably got attached to donnie cause his body was taking longer to succumb... then balthazar salted him#gabriel only had one vessel... good for them#anyway gabriel would go for travelers or anyone who spent time moving around#they need their witness protection#anyway rant over i wrote all of this while delirious from a migraine#have fun folks#seven.

Do you view the Norse myths as a running narrative with changes in characters? It seems like that’s how you see it and I’d like to see. If so, why and how? Wouldn’t it make more sense if they were disconnected and mostly independent stories without a through line?
I mean, the majority of myths were compiled so skalds could know where some kennings came from, so likely there's barely to none in the Eddas! There are some details that give some sense of causality or placement in some sort of timeline. For example, the wall of Asgard was built some time after Odin got Sól and Máni in their chariots and after Freya installed there; Thrymskvida is all about Mjölnir being stolen, so it means Thor has obtained it already; since Baldr meets Hel after death it means she has been in Eljúdnir for a while etc... But they obviously weren't compiled; in Lokasenna Loki refers to the murder of Baldr and Thjazi, so those have happened etc etc to make any sort of narrative sense the way we understand today.
To that you have to add that medieval literature isn't character-driven like most works of fiction today. The narrative and quest are what moves the plot rather than any character arc, as they tend to remain static, and if there's any sort of development, it's secondary to the narrative. A good example to illustrate this could be Guinevere from La Morte de Artur: she has a very important role, for sure, but on today's standards we could find her characterization as shallow and insufficient, very rarely showing any signs of it, and those that happen (for example, having a rage outburst on Lancelot) are few, in between and almost inconsistent (so she insults Lancelot to madness, yet says nothing when Bors calls her a whore indirectly? Ok). However, we all know that her affair with Lancelot is key for many pieces of Arthurian literature (although it's not the only one. Guinevere/Mordred for ever! Jajajaja), as it splits the Round Table, Gawain loses several kinsmen and his life, there's a war against Lancelot, Mordred takes control, in comes Camlann etc etc.
In my case, I'm neither a pagan or a scholar. I do like to write fiction, however, and Norse mythology is one of my favorite subjects for it. Therefore, if I want to make a coherent narrative, I'd have to make a coherent timeline. Then, since it'd be a piece of modern media (that is, if I ever get to do anything in the end), the characters can't remain static because they're what drives the plot rather than be moved by the plot. The Odin that still has his two eyes is intelligent, but the one with one has infinite wisdom, and aren't going to act the same.
Now, Norse mythology is quite scatological. The threat of Ragnarök is constantly looming, and Ragnarök is the destruction of a group of people, and of the society they built as well. We're told that before Ragnarök incest, treason and murder will become the norm, after all. So there's a great narrative going on leading to the end of the world, but again I think any modern adaptation of Norse mythology nowadays would be incomplete if this isn't reflected in the characters as well. In a story following I don't know, Röskva, why should the audience care Jörmungändr is poisoning water if Röskva isn't then allowed to take care of her job and herself properly? And how should Röskva react? Should she worry for her parents? Be mad that Thor didn't kill Jörmungändr when he had a bazillion opportunities? Try to find a source of clean water somehow? Learn how to make it safe again? What we can't for sure do is just let her stand there by the undrinkable water, nor suddenly decide she's going to marry Jörmungändr and thank him for making sure she can't even wash her hands.
TLDR: It's true there's no sense of a plot in Norse myths the way we understand today and could stand as independent but only to a certain point. However, if adapted to a modern piece of media, there has to be a timeline that makes sense to make for good characterizations that drive the plot.

figuring out the differences between kiet and eyrie with the whole crystal brave’s situation:
—while kiet is older, he is also very much a nepo baby + he’s lived most of his life in Tuliyollal without much of a concept of the world outside beyond his mother’s trading contacts + her stories.
—he’s a lot of things, serious + condescending + aloof, but he’s not cynical. he had hope and gives the benefit of the doubt more often than not. he sees a lot of himself in alphinaud and it does give kiet a bit of a blind spot when it comes to the boy. of course alphinaud is smart enough to not do xyz thing bc i am smart enough to not do that + there are plenty others around to make sure these things don’t happen
—so in some ways he sees the formation of the crystal braves as a learning experience for alphinaud….in a very nepo baby sort of way. he thinks of it very akin to his own experiences of learning in old sharlayan and getting to experience the world
