EuroGamer: 'BioWare knew the deepest secrets of Dragon Age lore 20 years ago, and locked it away in an uber-plot doc'
Original creator David Gaider on how "some of the big mysteries are being solved".
Rest of post under a cut due to length and possible spoilers.
"As I write about the secrets hidden in Dragon Age's mysterious Fade, and as I uncover some of them playing Dragon Age: The Veilguard, one question keeps rising up in my mind. How much did BioWare know about future events when first developing the series more than 20 years ago? That's a long time, and back then BioWare didn't know there would be a second game, which is why Dragon Age: Origins has an elaborate and far-reaching epilogue. Why lay so much lore-track ahead of yourself if you don't think you'll ever get there? But look more closely at Origins and there are big clues suggesting BioWare did know about future Dragon Age events. There are obvious signs in the original game, such as establishing recurring themes like Old Gods and the Blight and Archdemons. But there's also Flemeth, Morrigan's witchy mother, who's intimately linked to events in the series now - more specifically: intimately linked to Solas. Does her existence mean Solas was known about back then too? There's only one person I can think of to answer this and it's David Gaider, the original creator of Dragon Age's world and lore. We've talked before, once in a podcast and once for a piece on the magic of fantasy maps, where we discussed the creation of Dragon Age's world. And much to my surprise, when I ask him what he and the BioWare team knew back then, he says they knew it all. "By the time we released Dragon Age: Origins, we were basically sure that it was one and done, but there was, back when we made the world, an overarching plan," he says. "The way I created the world was to seed plots in various parts of the world that could be part of a game, a single game, and then there was the overall uber-plot, which I didn't know for certain that we would ever get to but I had an understanding of how it all worked together. "A lot of that was in my head until we were starting Inquisition and the writers got a little bit impatient with my memory or lack thereof, so they pinned me down and dragged the uber-plot out of me. I'd talked about it, I'd hinted at it, but never really spelled out how it all connected, so they dragged it out of me, we put it into a master lore doc, the secret lore, which we had to hide from most of the team.""
"This uber-plot document was only viewable on a need-to-know basis, he says, and only around 20 people on the team had access to it - other senior writers mostly. And even though Gaider left the Dragon Age team after Inquisition, and then eight years ago BioWare altogether, meaning he didn't work on The Veilguard at all, he believes - by looking at the events in the new game - his uber-plot lore "has more or less held up". That's impressive. What's even more impressive, or exciting, is that back then he also envisaged a potential end state for the entire Dragon Age series - a point at which it would make no sense for the series to carry on. "I always had this dream of where it would all end, the very last plot," he says, "which I won't say because who knows, we could still end up there. But the idea that this uber-plot was this sort of biggest, finite... That the final thing you could do in this world that would break it was there as a 'maybe we would get to do that one day'... There was just the idea of certain big, world-shaking things that were seeded in that arc, some of which have already come to pass, like the return of Fen'Harel." You've read that correctly: the idea to have Fen'Harel, also known as the Dread Wolf, reappear, was seeded all the way back then, way before Inquisition - the game in which he does actually reappear. But the concept for Solas, as a character who was Fen'Harel in disguise, was a newer idea. "That spawned from a conversation I had with Patrick [Weekes] and a number of other writers," Gaider says, "as an idea of 'what if you had a villain that spent an entire game where he's actually in the party and you get to know him?' Now, the god version and his larger role in the plot, yes that was known, but not that he would be presented as a character named Solas." Fen'Harel being known about means the other elven gods were known about, which means all of that stuff Solas reveals about his godly siblings - that they're not gods at all but evil elven mages he locked away behind the Veil - was known about back then too. "Oh yeah," Gaider says. "Everything that Solas tells you [at the end of Inquisition DLC, Trespasser]: it's all part of that original uber-lore - that was all in our mind." But why have so much lore if you're not certain you'll get to ever realise it? Well, to create a believable illusion. By creating an "excess" of lore, as Gaider describes it, Origins made Thedas feel like an old and believable place. A place with history, rather than a Western set that was all facade and no substance."
"BioWare also did something canny with the lore it did relay then, too: it shared it through the voices of characters living in the world, making it inherently fallible. In doing this, Dragon Age veiled its truths behind biases. The church-like organisation of the Chantry proclaims one truth, while the elves and dwarves proclaim another. Sidenote: you can experience this yourself through different racial origin stories in Dragon Age: Origins. This way, there's no one, objective, irrefutable, truth. "To get the truth, you kind of have to pick between the lines," Gaider says. So even though elven legends are coming true through the existence of Solas and The Veilguard's antagonist gods, it doesn't mean that's the one and only truth. There's truth in what the Chantry teaches and what the dwarves say, he tells me, which ignites my curiosity intensely. BioWare has also been tricksy in how it's rubbed out the lore the further back in time you go. "In general, the further the history goes back, we always would purposefully obfuscate it more and more," Gaider says - "make it more biased and more untrue no matter who was talking, just so that the absolute truth was rarely knowable. I like that idea from a world standpoint, that the player always has to wonder and bring their own beliefs to it." It leads into a founding principle of Dragon Age, which is doubt - because without it, you can't have faith, a particularly important concept in the series. It's where the whole idea of the Chantry's Maker comes from and with it, the legend about the fabled Golden City - now the Black City - at the heart of the Fade. This is the very centre of the lore web, and, I imagine, it's close to the series endpoint Gaider imagined long ago. All secrets end there. Did Gaider know what was in the Black City when he laid down Origins' lore? That's the question - and it startles me how casually he answers this. "Oh, yeah," he says. "What was in the Black City: that's the uber-plot. I knew exactly. "Was it as detailed in the first draft of the world?" he goes on. "No. I had an idea of the early history because that's where I started making the world. So the things that were true early-early: I knew exactly what the Black City was and the idea of what the elves believed, and what humans believed vis-a-vis the Chantry - that was all settled on really early. Then I expanded the world and the uber-plot bubbled out of that.""
"Gaider shows me the original cosmology design document for Dragon Age: Origins as if to prove this - or rather for the game that would become DAO. The world was known as Peldea back then. I can't share this with you because I see it via a shared screen on a video call, and because Gaider doesn't want me to, mostly because the ideas are so old they're almost unrecognisable from what's in the series now. But I can tell you it's a document that's just over a page in length, and that there's a circular diagram at the top showing the world in the middle and the spirit realm ringed around it. And on that document is reference to the Chantry's beliefs about a God located in a citadel that can be found there. Gaider says BioWare knew about Fen'Harel (the Dread Wolf) 20 years ago when it was developing Dragon Age: Origins, and that he'd one day reappear. The Fade wasn't known as the Fade back then, either, but as the Dreaming, because it's the place people go when they dream - an idea that lives on still. And if that sounds familiar to any fans of The Sandman among you, it should. "I'd say The Sandman series was probably fairly prominently in my head," says Gaider. "I liked that amorphous geography that was born from the psyche of collective humanity. I'd say yes, if I was to point at something specifically, that's probably where the very first inspiration of it took root." It's a lot to take in, but it reinforces the admiration I have for Dragon Age. Just as I have when hearing about the creation of my other favourite fantasy worlds, such as A Song of Ice and Fire, I begin to understand the magnitude - and the deliberateness - of the plotting that went on. I wonder if one day the Dragon Age series will end in the way Gaider first imagined, albeit slightly altered by the many other pairs of hands shepherding it along now. What a curious feeling it must be to know, so many years in advance, where things might go. Where that end is, I don't know, but I do know we'll take a significant step towards it in The Veilguard. After all, we're coming into contact with gods who were there at the recorded beginning of it all. "Yeah - we have access to people who can tell us the truth from first-hand experience," Gaider says, "although again, it depends on what the writers did with it. But if they continued the tradition of Dragon Age, you never know for sure if Solas is telling you everything, or what you're learning is the entire truth. "But yes, some of the big mysteries are being solved. I mean, will they one day definitively tell you about the Maker? Will we crack the big mysteries of the world and just make them answered finally? And does that ruin one of the central precepts that Dragon Age is founded upon? Maybe," he says. "Ultimately, that lore, when you make it big and you hint at it and hint at it and hint at it, it becomes a Chekhov's Gun of sorts. Eventually you got to pony up.""

The sound of water splashing under toy boats and fish fills the small room.
You ring the washcloth out over the suds, Rory’s idle hands scooping up the excess. She entertains herself with the slowly dissolving bubbles between her fingers as you fill up your cup.
“Put your head back,” you tell her, nudging her forehead.
She does, squeezing her eyes shut.
You pour the cup of water over her head, combing through her hair. You refill the cup again as she pipes up. 
“Mommy,” she says with a casual lull in her voice. 
You pour it out again, making sure to rinse the shampoo at her roots, “Hm?”
Her hand comes up to wipe the stream from off her forehead, “How did daddy get that scar?” 
“Well, daddy has lots of scars,” you say carefully. “You know that.”
She shakes her head, “Littler scars. He has a big one though, right here.” 
She points up and down her torso. 
“What happened?”
You take a breath, eyes focused on the dissolving suds. “What happened…”
She continues on, “He said scars come from when you get hurt and the bigger ones are bigger hurts. How did he get such a big hurt?”
“Um...” She’s quite young to hear that story, especially coming from you. Your older daughters have an awareness of what happened, though it’s never been formally discussed. You think Mia knows what the autopsy scar is and the twins definitely know he died at the very least. You’ve been made aware that there’s been…discussions at school about who their dad is and how he one day died and then years later magically reappeared. You and Jason had decided that you would talk to them about it eventually, but only when they were old enough to not be completely traumatized hearing it.
You just hadn’t assumed that day would creep up on you like this.
You sit back, tense. “Did you ask him that?”
“No…” she says gravely. “I don’t wanna make him sad.”
You nod, trying to collect your thoughts. How can you steer away from this without attracting more questions? 
“Do you know what happened?” she asks, scanning your face.
You do your best to reset your expression to neutral.
You start without really knowing where the sentence is going, “We…we can talk about it later…”
Rory tilts her head, “Not now?”
You shake yours, “Not right now.”
That’s enough to appease her curiosity for the rest of the bath, but you know with that one, it won’t last long.
You’d gotten her dressed and sent her on her way, but your mind stayed heavy the whole time.
You walk downstairs slowly, hands still damp from the bath. As you turn the corner from the stairs you find Jason, reading contentedly by himself in the living room.
You cross the room without hesitation, climbing into the spot next to him on the couch. He doesn’t need to look up, only adjusts the position of his arm so its draped over you, pulling you into his side.
“So…” you start, “Rory was asking about your scar..”
He turns away from the book, looking at you with serious eyes. “What did she say?”
“She wants to know how you got it,” you tell him. “I didn’t tell her, but she didn’t want to ask you either.”
“Why not?” He asks quickly, face brimming with anxiety.
You shake your head, calming his worries. “She said she didn’t want to make you sad.”
He relaxes a bit at that, taking in the information.
You break the silence after a minute, quietly telling him, “I think it might be time to talk about it.”
He looks dejected, eyes on the floor. “They’re still little..”
“I’m not saying tell them everything right now, just…acknowledge it.”
“I don’t—” He sighs, “I don’t know how I’m supposed to tell them that.”
You think for a moment, nodding. 
“Tell them how you told me. Just…more kid words.”
He still looks resigned at the idea so you continue, “You know how to talk to them. Just tell them what you want them to hear. They’ll listen.”
He nods, eyes low. “Okay…”
You stand up, and he grabs your hand as you rise, pulling himself up too.
You give each other one more confirming look before calling up the stairs, “Girls? Come here.”
There’s a ten second delay before a scuttle of footsteps starts down the staircase, arriving with a low-liveliness, nearly bedtime energy amongst them.
The second you’re within sight of them, they’re keen that something’s not right.
“What’s going on?” 
“Is—”
“Everything’s alright. Nothing’s wrong,” you tell them. “We just want to talk to you for a minute.”
Your words don’t do much to ease their minds, but after a moment they slowly gather onto a single couch. They’re all squished in together and Rory’s half on top of Anna and Laine, the latter of which can barely move. Still, there’s no complaints to be heard, only an air of seriousness throughout the room. 
Jason clears his throat, though he has trouble looking at them, the easier option seeming to be the carpeted floor. 
“Alright,” he starts with a deep breath. “So my, uh, my Y scar…”
The air in the room drops the second the words are out, the girls all quiet and listening closely. You can tell this is something they’d been wondering about for a long time.
“When I was younger and I’d just started doing the, uh, special job my brothers and Bruce do…” He takes another breath, “Some things happened that shouldn’t have and I got hurt..”
“What things?” Ryan asks.
“I…I got tricked by a bad guy and…I just got hurt.”
It’s uncharacteristic for the girls to all look so dejected and serious like this. Goes to show that you were right—they do have an understanding of what happened.
Anna is the first to pipe up. 
“Did you die?”
“Anna—”
“It’s alright,” Jason interrupts. He collects himself before eking out, “Um…yeah, I-I did.”
He’s still stuck on those words and you have to silently push for him to keep talking, so as to not give their imaginations time to run wild.
He takes the hint, stuttering, “But, um, it’s complicated, but I came back and—”
Laine interrupts this time, almost teary-eyed.
“Are you going to die again?”
Jason shakes his head quickly, “No. No, honey, not for a long time.”
It’s quiet for a moment as they process, sorting through the details into something their minds can understand.
Rory looks on edge, wide-eyed, as she asks, “Are you a ghost?”
“No, sweetheart,” Jason answers calmly with a shake of his head. 
That seems to calm her anxiety more than anything else.
“Are you better now?” Laine asks. 
Jason nods, “Yeah, I’m a lot better now.”
Ryan looks skeptical at the choice of words. “How did you…get better?”
He takes a shaky breath, “Well…your mommy helped me a lot. And then you helped me some more. And now…now I’m all healed.”
None of them seem to really understand, but they accept the answer anyways.
The next question is from Anna. 
“Is the bad guy in jail now?” 
Jason only momentarily stutters in his response, but pulls it together nicely. 
“It’s not something you need to be worried about. I promise. Nothing like that’s going to happen again to me or you or anyone.” 
This appears to appease most of the concerns flying around in their heads. 
He continues, “We can talk about it more when you get older, but…
You take the queue, nodding Rory and Lainey your way. 
“Let’s go get ready for bed, okay?”
You nudge the younger two upstairs, who, to your surprise, go without resistance.
You give Jason one last glance before heading up the stairs, happy to see him much more relaxed than he was at the start of this conversation.
He’s left downstairs with his eldest three girls, each nearly bursting at the seams full of their thoughts and questions. 
Jason thumps down on the couch between them, a heavy breath following.
The trio watch him quietly for a moment before Anna speaks.   
“I know what it is,” she tells him somberly. He looks at her with more melancholia than he would’ve hoped for.
She continues, “There’s autopsies on my show sometimes.”
Right, her show. The X-Files.
Jason nods, a bit remiss at the idea that she knows.
From his other side, Ryan pipes up. 
“Did it hurt?”
He shakes his head, “No, I-I wasn’t…” 
Wasn’t alive. He doesn’t want to say that, though. 
Ryan nods, understanding anyways. “Did it hurt when you died?”
He hesitates before answering, wavering between lying to protect their minds and telling them the truth. In the end, he decides that you’re right, they can handle it in small measures. 
“Yeah. It did, a little,” he confesses. ”But like I said, that’s not going to happen again.”
From behind Ryan, Mia speaks so softly Jason almost misses her words. 
“I’m sorry.”
He looks at her, brow furrowed. “For what?” 
“That that happened to you,” she says. Her eyes are filled with an equal sadness to his and it breaks his heart. Even more so that her words are so clearly meant sincerely.
“Oh.”
It’s all he can manage to say.
He was only a little older than Mia when his life had been taken away from him and he’d been forced to reset everything he ever knew. And now, all these years later, he sits here surrounded by his children, his world that he was given a second chance to create. His children that don’t see a monster when they look at him, don’t see the scarred giant that he sees. They just see their dad. 
When they were still young they’d started getting almost excited whenever they got a scar from playing too hard because it made them more like him. It took Jason years to just bear the thought of his scars, but his girls look at them like art. Even when they know he got them in bad ways, they pour out nothing but affection. No disgust, no fear, no hate. Just love.
His eyes close and his face falls in his hands, overwhelmed by the idea of his children being such angels, despite being products of him.
“Dad? Are you okay?” 
He nods, face still covered. His voice is muffled as he says, “Yeah. Yeah, sweetheart, I just, um…” 
His words die off with little fight, and when his hands drop his eyes are red. 
Anna, who’s usually compulsed to only touch emotion with a ten-foot pole, is the first to wrap her arms around him, holding him tight. The gesture takes him by surprise, especially from her, and he tenses briefly before deflating like a balloon. Mia and Ryan are quick to follow suit, basically dog-piling over his opposite shoulder.
“It’s okay, dad. We love you. And your scars,” Ryan tells him. 
Oh, they think he’s sad.
Hell, thirteen years ago he would’ve thought he was sad. He only started to understand his feelings after his first daughter was born. He doesn’t tell them he’s not sad, doesn’t tell them that he’s crying because life slapped him around and then gave him everything he could ever want five times over. 
Instead, he just nods, pulling them impossibly closer.

Code-Switching
Billy code-switches every now and then and doesn’t even realize it.
Marvel: *talking in his normal voice to Mary*
Reporter: *pops out of nowhere with a camera man behind her* “Captain Marvel we’d like to discuss with you today about the recent incident with Sivana.”
Marvel: *almost immediately switches to a transatlantic accent* “Of course!”
Reporter: *almost gets whiplash from how fast he switched* “Right, well could you fill us in on the details?”
Marvel: “Sure I can.” *starts talking with the accent and even using old-timey lingo*
Reporter: *walked away from the interview only knowing barely half of what happened cause she could barely understand half of the things he said*
Fawcitizens: “Ah yes. I see.” *understood perfectly*
The reporter wasn’t originally from Fawcett and came after to time bubble so she could get the latest scoops on Marvel.

Marvel: *comforting an abused kid with the absolute kindest and most compassionate look on his face*
Abused Kid: *crying*
Marvel: *picks kid up and gives them to their mom and heads over to the Abusive Dad*
Abusive Dad: “What’re you looking at, asshole?!”
Marvel: *kind ahh smile immediately fades and proceeds to promise to do the most torturous and gruesome things to the man*
Police: *look away like the aren’t hearing a thing*
Marvel: *looks back to the kid and is smiling again. Gives the kid a little wave*

He was under the effects of a magic spell that was supposed to mimic the effect of being drugged.
Marvel: *nearly passed out on the floor, family guy style*
Flash: “Oh my god!” *rushes over and leans down, shaking Marvel a lot* “Cap, are you okay?!”
Marvel: *thinks Wally is Freddy and frog blinks at him, annoyance crossing his face at being shaken* “Freddy, get the fuck offa me.” *literally puts his hand on Flash’s face and pushes it away*
Flash: *a little gobsmacked cause he’s never heard Marvel curse before* “Wha-”
Marvel: “Now, get outta here. Or I’ll beat you.” *shakes his fist at him before making a dismissive gesture with his hand* “Shoo shoo.” *promptly passes out*
Flash: *doesn't know how to feel about the friendliest guy he knows telling him he’ll beat him* “Alright buddy.” *helps him up and makes the long trek to a zeta tube so he can get Marvel to the medbay*
When Marvel woke up…
Flash: “Cap, you’re awake! Are you feeling better now?”
Marvel: *sits up in the cot he’s in* “Uh… yeah I’m fine.”
Flash: “You sure…? Cause, I mean, you were saying some pretty interesting stuff back there.”
Marvel: “What stuff? Did I say something weird?” *praying to the gods that he didn’t accidentally reveal his identity*
Flash: “Kinda?”
*silence*
Flash: “Yousaidyou’dbeatme.” *says super fast*
Marvel: “WHAT?” *sounds horrified* “Oh my Gods, I’m so sorry?!”
Flash: “It’s fine! It’s fine! It’s just who in the world is Freddy? And what did he do to warrant you telling him that you’d beat him for stopping you from trying to sleep??”
Marvel: “Uh…” *doesn’t really have much of an excuse other than that’s just how Freddy and him talk to each other*
Billy spent the rest of the day avoiding Flash’s questions.

How do Jake and June get along?

They are friends, don't get me wrong, but their friendship is definitely one of the more bumpier ones amongst the group.
There are some aspects of their relationship that are heavily influenced by some plot points of this AU that I dont want to reveal rn, but I can explain some other reasons why its complicated in broader strokes for now (in a bit of yapping under cut) but the short answer is probably that they get along maybe just a little better than Jenny and Ben. xD
As you know, both of their shows are very similar in many aspects, but also different in others and those differences are actually what makes those two clash more often than not.
Despite both being of magical world, and both being chosen as respective guardians of it - their positions in it are different.
Jun, was chosen by Magical Elders, or basically be magic itself, as Te Xuan Zhe, while she was very young. And while she comes from magical line, its clearly that aside of that she is human. Also, her position is not something she can just abandon, not until a suitable replacement can be chosen at least, and that can take decades until she or her brothers (or maybe other relatives) have more descendants. So she more or less has no choice at being Te Xuan Zhe, and while she doesn't necessarily resent the position itself, she really doesn't like all the restrictions that come with it.
Jake, on the other hand, comes from a line of magical creatures. And yes, not everyone can manifest this hidden magical part of them, like his mother, but they are still considered as part of magical community, since they are still aware of it (unlike Jake's dad who is human). So, while Jake awakened his draconic abilities that are inherently part of him now, his position as protector of New York/USA - is not inherent. We saw him train for that position, we saw Hailey being considered for it, we saw him lose it too! And while, yes the Dragon Council apparently has the power to seal someone's dragon side away if they fire them from that position, but it still doesn't inherently change the fact that he is from dragon line.
The reason why I brought up this seemingly not big of a difference between their positions in the magical community - is the freedom of choice that Jake has and Jun lacks. If it comes to it, Jake can resign from his position as American Dragon, but it would not mean that he would stop being a dragon or being a part of the magical community (I mean just look at retired Lao Shi). While Jun on the other hand doesn't really have a choice at being Te Xuan Zhe. Sure, she can probably return the title to her poor aging Ama, Jasmine or even find a way to pass it to Ray Ray, since their whole entangled magic thing - but it doesn't change the fact that she was chosen by The Magical Elders - by the highest magical authority there probably is - to be Te Xuan Zhe. And if she hadn't, she probably would have not access to magic and knowledge about it - she would have essentially been like the rest of their family - their parents and Dennis (before he learned about magic). This freedom of choice is not necessarilly something Jake and Jun discussed directly and openly very often, but it's a thing that is an almost palpable tension current in their interactions.
So, the second point that kinda spirals from their positions is about the authority and power. Jun, is essentially a boss of herself. It might not seem like it, but its kinda true - because she works mostly under her own power, without the Magical Elders directly breathing down her neck. Sure, Ama, Monroe and others help in guiding her, but more often than not she is not working necessarily under any orders, but on her own decisions. (It's actually a lot like Danny operates, but, well, with a lot more assistance than poor Phantom lol) In comparison, Jake, like I said, is essentially hired/chosen into his guardian position by the Dragon Council, and he is mentored by his grandfather and trained in some aspects by the Council. And while, sure, largely he also operates under his own power and makes his own decisions in regards of doing his job, there is also this constant watching from the Council and the threat of beings 'sacked' and have his powers restricted or completely sealed, like I mentioned before. It seems like such a small difference, since essentially they operate the same, but its another thing that kinda comes up in their interactions.
When it comes to less magical aspects tho, their families play a role in how they interact too. We all know that Jake has a little sister - Hailey, who seems like a perfect youngest child and often is shown to trying to one-up her older brother in the eyes of their parents. And we all know that while Jake and Hailey love and care for each other, the both clearly have sibling issues (like rivalry and feeling of inadequacy) between them. Jun, on the other hand, is a middle child, with a bossy teenaged older brother Dennis, and a chaos gremlin of younger brother Ray Ray. Jun constantly sqwabbles with Dennis (a little less after he learned about magic) and as Ray Ray's older sister, she constantly have to keep him in check. With those close relationships its no wonder that sometimes interactions between Jun and Jake can descend into similar sqabbles - it really doesn't help that Jake and Dennis have a few similarities, and that Jake has just a tiny bit of similar chaos gremlin energy that Ray Ray has; and that Jun is fiercely independant and very self-sufficient, which would remind Jake about how Hailey can be.
And when it comes to their parents, well, there is one super obvious glaring difference. Jake's mother always knew about magical side of the world, presumably that while she did not awaken her own dragon abilities she still possessed some inherant magic - and she had always been a stauch supporter of Jake's position as American Dragon (does not mean she was necessarilly happy about Jake being in danger, but since he awakened as dragon, there probably was little she could do), while Jake's father finally learned about it in the finale and accepted it and his family. Jun's parents on the other hand... are still very much oblivious, and very much human. And while its clear that they both love their kids, its inevitable that there would be some sort of distance between them, especially after all three kids learned about magic. And I feel like for Jun, being a middle child is not easy in general, but while also being a magical protector and staying close to her parents is probably twice as hard. Though, I guess to balance it out, Jake and Hailey are not really that good at getting along, at least compared to Jun, Ray Ray and Dennis, who got a lot closer ever since Dennis learned about magic.
But in conclusion: not only Jake gets a freedom of choice and the open support from his family, while Jun is literally caught in her position, and still prohibited from revealing about magic to her parents.
And I know it sounds a bit bleak for Jun when I put it all like this. I know it seems as a very solid ground for a relationship where Jun resents Jake and etc. but BUT!!!!! Those plot points that I mentioned before come in play, and it changes that relationship dynamic a bit, and while SURE there are some resentment from Jun about Jake, its not as strong, due to those PLOT POINTS THAT I CANT REVEAL BECAUSEEE AAARRRHH SPOILERS
it would be much more fun to reveal in stories ;)
But, so yeah, their relationship is just kinda really complicated??? It's the best I could give you rn. TTwTT

You looked down at your hand, the sigil scar that König had printed into your skin seeming to lose its luster. Once, it had been bright and energetic, flowing with currents of magic. When you looked at it again, it seemed to almost be fading.
Ever since discussing leaving the military, discussing your ‘relationship’ with König, he’d left you completely alone. You could only just barely feel the magic of his pact when you trained your skills. Your body ached with the loss of the immense power he’d pumped through your system. You hadn’t realised it before, but König had become a second body for you, a second reservoir of energy to manipulate for spells and rituals. Your own reservoir was notably weaker than most, and it had never been more apparent than the past week.
Your instructors had started to get antsy around you. Something about their weakest pupil being weaker than before set them on edge. It was as though they expected you to snap at any moment. Maybe they thought you were planning something, preparing for something greater, but you weren’t. You were just weak, tired, useless. You’d never felt so alone.
Your friends tried to ask you questions, but you never really knew how to answer them. How could you tell them that you’d insulted your summon? Summons weren’t meant to be insulted. They weren’t meant to pull away from their summoners. They were meant to obey, mind and body completely under control of their summoner as the two charged into battle. A summoner was meant to be perfect, immaculate, glorious. They were meant to be a pillar of strength and authority. König was meant to be under your thumb, but as of the past week you felt as though the roles had been reversed.
You crept back to your room quietly. Occasionally, somebody would elbow you as they passed by, snicker when you could do nothing more than shoot them a dirty glare. It seemed that the others were also picking up on your weakness. Without König to protect you, bullying had started to ramp up again. It had started small, just cutting you off in line, but you knew that it would get out of control soon enough. It was only a matter of time. With how the superiors watched you, it seemed they were starting to piece things together themselves. You shuddered to think of what they had in store for you.
Your room was just at the end of the hallway. A few more steps, a few more pushes. You could do it. You knew you could, but you were tired. You were so, so tired. You could feel yourself slowing down to a shuffle. Today had been especially hard on you, and now that you were so close, the doorway had never been farther. You walked, but it seemed to only leap further and further from your reach, playfully dancing beyond your fingertips. Was the hallway always this long?
You looked around. Was the hallway always this empty?
A hand clasped down on your shoulder. You spun around to look at the perpetrator, then up, up, up.
General Cusker looked down his nose at you, twin black stars burning with malicious glee. His dark lips curled into a treacherous smile as he spoke in a honey-smooth deep voice, “Good evening, sergeant. Tell me, do you have some time for a chat tonight?”
You didn’t, but who were you to talk back to a general?
“Excellent,” Gen. Cusker grinned with a pristine white smile, “I didn’t think so.”
You hadn’t spoken, but maybe your expression was enough.
“Come,” Gen. Cusker helped turn you away from your door, “I think we should have a chat.”
You nodded along mutely, so tired that words only coagulated on your tongue in a muddy mess.
“You know, it’s hard to get a hold of you,” Gen. Cusker remarked, “but I’m glad I finally managed to get a hold of you. After all, you’ve become something of a curiosity on the fort.”
“I have?” your words slurred together thickly.
“Most certainly,” Gen. Cusker ascertained, “I’ve heard many good things about you. You’re a good summoner, you know. Strong, loyal.”
“I thought they all hated me,” you admitted as you stumbled beside him.
Gen. Cusker clasped a hand around your shoulders to steady you, “Well, it certainly seems they push you to your limits.”
“I try my best, sir,” you muttered meekly. The general didn’t let go of your shoulders, merely pushing you forward to his office.
Gen. Cusker’s words slurred together in your mind. He was saying something important, but his words whispered through your ears like cotton clouds on a sunset. Here one day, gone the next. It all flitted by on summer winds. 
You were pushed into a dark office and ushered into a wooden chair. The room felt suffocating and thick. Something had the hair on the back of your neck standing on edge, standing attention like little soldiers when the general sat down.
Gen. Cusker turned on a lamp and sighed, “Much nicer. You know, my wife found me this lamp at a local flea market. I told her I couldn’t bring it into office, but she told me I had to. Who am I to tell my wife she can’t have what she wants? I didn’t work this hard for nothing, did I?” Gen. Cusker finally looked at you with a saccharine smile, “with your relationship with König, you must understand.”
“My… My wah?” you drawled sleepily.
Gen. Cusker snapped his fingers, “Are you listening to what I’m saying?”
“I’m trying,” you grimaced, humiliated by your own personal display.
“I’m starting to understand your superiors,” Gen. Cusker grumbled before clearing his desk, “well, if you’re so tired, I’ll do this quickly.”
“Do wha?” you squinted.
“I’m just asking for a simple exchange,” Gen. Cusker pulled a form out of a file, “it’s just a quick sign. I’ve been told you’ve got a good relationship with König. Is this true?”
“Eh…” you winced, “kinda? I don’t really know actually.”
“You don’t know?” the general paused momentarily, “how come?”
“He’s been distant,” you admitted, “it’s… It’s really bad. He’s not responding to my calls.”
“He’s not responding to your calls?” Gen. Cusker drummed his heavy fingers on his desk, “really? That’s… Interesting. Do you know why?”
“I…” you tried to subtly pinch your wrist to wake you up, “I think I offended him.”
“So he’s not so close to you right now/” Gen. Cusker’s intense eyes bored into your soul.
“Not right now,” you admitted.
“So then you’re a bit distant right now?” Gen. Cusker pressed further.
“Not really.”
You shrunk back in your chair as Gen. Cusker drummed his fingers against the table again. He glanced behind him at the flags by his desk, then back to you with a perplexing expression. He smiled and you felt the temperature of the room drop.
“I’m going to offer you a simple deal here,” Gen. Cusker pulled out a pen, “and it might seem a bit radical, but I think it might be of interest.”
You nodded along slowly.
“König is an incredible summon. He’s the most powerful one on the entire base. He’s almost at a godlike level,” Gen. Cusker explained slowly as he templed his fingers together between you, “a summon of his power is capable of turning the tides of war. He could level a small country in ten seconds flat.”
You waited for him to continue.
“If you were to give another summoner König, someone who could control König properly, you could bring in an era of peace humanity has never known before.”
You blinked. The cotton in your mind slipped out of view just enough for you to gather your bearings. You sat up in your chair and frowned.
“You’re trying to take König from me?” you asked.
“I wouldn’t phrase it that way,” Gen. Cusker admitted, “but if you give König to a more competent summoner, you could change the entire world. You could bring in an era of prosperity and wealth never before seen. You could save all of humanity.”
You looked down at your hands. Sure, you cared for König, but if what the general said was true…
You picked up the pen, “So, if I sign over König, what would happen to me?”
“You’d be given billions to live on your own,” Gen. Cusker told you.
“B-billions!?” you blinked in a stupor.
“Billions,” Gen. Cusker reiterated, “König is the most powerful weapon our country could ever get their hands on. All the nukes in the world mean nothing compared to a snap of his fingers.”
You shuddered at the thought. You knew König was powerful, but this powerful? This was what had been at your fingertips all this time? It didn’t seem real. It didn’t seem right. No, something wasn’t right at all.
“If König is so powerful, why did you let me keep him in the first place?” you asked.
“Well, we wanted to make sure that König could be controlled,” Gen. Cusker explained, “it’s been centuries since something like König’s been summoned, and the last time plunged humanity into the dark ages.”
“The last reckoning,” you whispered.
“Yes, that was the last time humanity drew upon such power,” Gen. Cusker smiled and leaned forward, “but you could control him. If you pass your control to another, a more capable summoner, you can change the world.”
You looked down at the pen, sitting ever so slightly askew on top of the page.
“I need some time to think.”
Gen. Cusker frowned, “I’m sorry, but I don’t think you have much time.”
You pressed your lips into a line as you met Cusker’s lifeless eyes, “What do you mean?”
“You don’t have much time here,” Gen. Cusker repeated, “I want this done by the end of the hour. This is of utmost importance, surely you understand?”
“But… But isn’t this-”
“If you don’t hand König over willingly, there’s other options.”
You froze. You felt like you couldn’t even breath. You stared at Gen. Cusker with wide, wide eyes as the reality of your situation dawned on you.
“I can sign,” you whispered, “I can sign right now.”

Was watching some Peri clips at 3 am in the morning, as one does, and found this clip where Peri is arguing with Dev where he says this:
“The rules are the only things separating us from peace and TOTAL CHAOS“
And its surprising that I dont see it be mentioned a lot when discussing his character, probably because of how hard is to find where to watch ANW, but this is basically a confirmation that this dude has serious anxiety and really believes breaking rules will end up in chaos. And you wonder, how does the son of Cosmo and Wanda and brother of THE Timmy Turner, who owes his existence to rule breaking ends up thinking like this.
Was it Jorgen’s training? Does the Academy makes new godparents anxious about rule breaking? Or did something else happened that marked him this way? Maybe that theory that he needs to have a real tight handle of his magic (and emotions) or things go wrong has something to do with his anxiety.
How is this purple twink so interesting?, again i need to open his brain.

The magical wars that wiped everyone out from marcille’s elemental spirits explanation and the events from the demon tidbit that wiped out civilizations.. are these the same events/discussing the same sort of situation?
They almost seem contradictory, the elements deciding to wipe everyone out vs the demon being upset when forced to do so by humans. Sorry if this was confusingly worded!

I believe those are two different events, for the ancients the magic they used was known to come from the demon, that wasn't a forbidden knowledge yet. So in the war Marcille mentions that was probably already "ancient history"
The demon wiped out everyone while already locked inside a dungeon so that was probably not something Marcille would know about. And people in the surface weren't affected.
The war she's talking about *might* be the war between dwarves and elves that ended up with ancient artifacts being locked away (Gnomes would probably side with dwarves)

Like, they have different perspectives on magic but magic used for harm will case harm to all no matter your philosophy on how to use it? Hope this makes sense

Some interesting little tidbits about the world that are gleaned from Mementos found: It looks like there's already an almost full list here.
After the Exalted March against the Dalish, the Antivan crows signed some kind of treaty or agreement promising to take action if another march against the elves was going to take place. It seems they did 'stand with the Dales' in some form.
The Crow mementos in general seem to indicate when they realised the influence they had, they also began to discuss how they should use that influence, and the responsibilities they had.
When an archdemon is slain, the Grey Wardens recover a fang to keep as a trophy.
The Wardens keep a record called The Book of Ashes to record not the dead, but the Wardens who survived the Blights.
Scrying exists to tell the contents of certain containers or the function of certain magical items.
The Shadow Dragons disguise their manifestos and propaganda as spellbooks, in the hope the Venatori will pick them up and read them without realising what they are, and thus have their mind changed.
The Wardens wear blue because it's a local dye available in the Anderfels - I think we can probably say 'Anderfels Azure' is derived from Brona's Bloom. Poetic, as it's one of 'the first to fade when blight emerges' and that they mell of warm honey and rainy spring mornings—things the blight forgets.' The uniform is a reminder of what the Blight takes, and a hope for its return all the same.

I once again come to you with a proposal for later seasons dbda:
They eventually do an entire season, where every episode is supposed to pay homage to another popular tumblr show. Part of this is that episodes are release weekly, instead of dropping the entire season at once.
The superwholock episodes are of course released in three consecutive weeks. There is a jensen ackles cameo, because he's still not over supernatural ending. The johnlock conspiracy theorists swear up and down that the sherlock episode used plot points from the never released "real" final season. Everyone jokes how during those three weeks, tumblr has become unusable, despite it not being that bad.
The release of the star trek episode coincides with the irish reunification, which unfortunately didn't happen in the year of our lord 2024. Tumblr implodes.
the doctor who episode, the gang is investigating the doctor who is investigating them. it's not an homage it's fully just a doctor who dbda crossover. they go round and round in a circle of mischief and bad disguises until the doctor's companion starts hitting on jenny and it all implodes. the night nurse can't even handle the implication of all this paper work. she leaves forever to be with her lover kashi inside a whale (she cannot find the whale and returns within the hour, very wet, very annoyed, very much unwilling to discuss the situation)
the merlin episode follows crystal learning her magical abilities and trying to hide it from everyone around her. they're at a ren fair for niko's birthday (who is fully decked out in hot pink bedazzled armor) and everyone keeps complimenting crystal's special affects (magic) which edwin gets increasingly annoyed about ("my magic is far more technically complicated, i'm not relying on my feelings"). there's no direct homage but the background of every fifth shot is colin morgan and bradley james making out and/or stabbing each other (they rotate between to keep things interesting)
this series single-handedly solves homophobia and climate change. how? power of homoerotic eye contact, baby!

Was just listening to a history podcast that I usually enjoy very much, and this particular episode was about early modern witch persecutions in Europe and I genuinely had to pause it because the guest (a well known and respected historian and professor who has written several books on the subject) confidently told the hosts (also professors of history albeit in later periods) that witches having familiars is a British phenomenon and is not really seen elsewhere in Europe, which uh. Is just flat out incorrect?
While I’m definitely not a historian, I was a weird nerdy kid with insomnia and undiagnosed adhd who grew into a weird nerdy adult with insomnia and adhd so I’ve spent many hours going down the rabbit holes of the history of folklore, ideas of magic, and witch trials of primarily Denmark and Sweden, and I can think of multiple examples of familiars in Scandinavian witch trials. I’m genuinely left wondering if they don’t think they appear outside Britain because they’re not *literally* called familiars seeing as, y’know, it’s not in English?? And this podcast usually doesn’t shy away from openly discussing the validity and contexts of their source materials, which makes it even more confusing that this was just accepted without any further comment.

I saw your twt about holding back on telling stories with serious and deep tones and it reminded me of an issue I had a while back. Im a south park fan and I loved reading deep analysis of the characters. and south park being south park, people dont take it seriously and think its just funny so it doesnt deserve deep analysis like other forms of media. I always came across comments saying "its not that deep" or "doing all of that for south park" and I used to hate that so much because why are you commenting that under the authors post? In media there is like a "spectrum" of how deep you are in it as a fan, and it doesn't make you less of a fan if you like to binge watch the show when you feel like it because its funny. Someone who makes fan fiction and psychoanalyses the characters doesnt make them a better fan than you. I hate "it's not deep" because it is that deep to me, I enjoy it, but it dismisses critical thinking and discourages deep discussions about our interests. I want to learn more about the turning point for eric cartman and the friendship dynamics between the main 4. I want to read psychoanalysis of the characters and understand why they do the things they do. I loved reading fan fics with an author that understood how the characters work and put them in situations while making it believable. Whether the content was deep and serious or lighthearted and silly. I don't see those as cringe at all. What I see as cringe is trying to downplay someones time and effort. you dont care for it. cool, just dont make it our problem.
I believe in recent years, this cringe and its not that deep mentality is linked to media literacy/reading comprehension issues. On top of the fact, that fandoms right now has been "normalized", so alot of mean and rude kids and adults are in this space not having a mature and respectful conversation and discussions, as well as zero fandom etiquette. (I understand the past wasnt this magical respectful place but this behaviour has increased compared to past years).
Please don't worry about making deep content, its super fun and there will be fans of what you write/draw that will definitely be into it.
GOSH anon you are absolutely right. cringe culture has done some serious damage to people's creativity and freedom of expression. doing things in earnest is now cringe to so many people (specifically that 18-21 age where they think they're better than everyone else and everything is cringe to them, image is everything) and they actually give you shit for it?? it's crazy. the most harmless thing in the world. whenever my hey arnold comics would leave my target audience on instagram i would get the meanest comments for no fucking reason, because i was taking hey arnold "seriously" (nevermind that hey arnold is probably the nicktoon with the most emotional depth and moments besides ginger but i digress) but hey at least i'm not the one losing my marbles over some random cartoon comic on the internet.
i think rudeness in general has been too normalized not just in fandom, but in social media in general. it's sad. the only thing you can do about it is be kind as much as you can to counterbalance it. i'd like to think that rubs off on people just like how being rude rubbed off on them.
i said that thing about holding back because i'm admittedly too hard on myself sometimes. no one is calling me cringe or making fun of me for what i do, thankfully, people have been super cool and supportive. and it means a lot to me because i'm very earnest about everything i create, even when i try to hold back. i literally cannot help being myself. it's all i know how to do. i'm just glad i was able to grow a platform where i'm free to be openly passionate about the things i like, talk about them and why i like them, the little things that i find fascinating, the emotions they make me feel, all of that shit is awesome and i wish more people did that.

Sometimes I think the biggest tragedy of Merlin ending when it did is the inability for us to see the final growth of both Arthur and Merlin.
I.e. There is the obvious growth of Arthur actually making changes personally and politically regarding the acceptance of magic
BUT
There was also an opportunity for Arthur to push Merlin towards stepping into a leadership role and fulfilling more of his potential, which would have been so fun.

What are your thoughts on some of the wording that is used to describe Taash's gender dysphoria in Veilguard?
Anytime their gender identity crisis is discussed, it's always called "non-binary stuff." There is also one character in the wetlands who is non-binary and they say that another character helped them with their "non-binary" stuff.
Surely, the terms gender dysphoria, gender identity crisis, or even just saying "helped me figure out that I was non-binary" would have been better writing.
It feels like they didn't have faith in people to understand other terms or context clues.
Please note that this ask is not meant to be in bad faith and there is no pressure to answer.
I am generally curious if this is an example of bad writing or if non-binary stuff is the correct term over gender dysphoria or gender identity crisis in this context.
I think it all goes back to just using "non-binary" in the game itself. And while I get how some enbies think it's important to use our language to describe us in fiction, and that's a justified opinion to hold, I'm going to disagree. Games with heavy and extensive lore and actual conlangs shouldn't just fall back on hyperspecific modern terms when we all know they're capable of delivering the same message in a way that doesn't lean on the fourth wall or break immersion. Krem, for all the clunkiness that surrounded him, got a whole in-universe explanation for how he fit into the Qun.
Now, to be clear, I'm not saying I value immersion over representation, or that nonbinary people are immersion-breaking. That's an insane opinion to hold. It's just that I, personally, feel more out-of-place and alienated when a fictional world's attempts at including me uses modern terminology. It doesn't tell me that I belong in that world and there is space for me in it, but that there isn't. This vast world, which has fantastical locations and magic and Blighted old gods and dragons, which has room for all of those things, but doesn't have room for language and identities unique to it that might reflect mine? It has to use language that doesn't belong there to explain people that supposedly do? Do you get my issue here? There is an inherent contradiction in this approach.
By not bothering to integrate nonbinary people into Thedas, by falling back on and insisting on modern terminology, BioWare isn't telling me "you're valid, you belong" it's telling me "your presence is so incongruous with our world that we couldn't do anything but use existing terminology to describe you." In their attempt to be inclusive, they just didn't bother to actually integrate nonbinary identities into its world. Then they keep highlighting their own failure by pointing at my identity and telling everyone in their world how valid it is. Imagine you're just existing in a crowd and some motherfucker points you out and goes "YOU. YOU'RE VALID! EVERYBODY LOOK AT HOW VALID THEY ARE!" That's what's bothering me the most. It makes me feel like a freak, not like I belong. And maybe that's a me problem, but given the responses I've seen to my Taash posts, I don't think it is.
Anyway, sorry for that tangent. I don't think gender dysphoria or gender identity crisis would've been better writing, personally. I was pretty confused for why this random NPC told me about their gender identity at all, to be frank. Especially when they, in the first conversation, gave us their pronouns in a very naturalistic way, and Rook + the companions repeated those pronouns later. Like, for me? That, combined with Flynn's very androgynous appearance, was enough to clue me in to who they were. We only have two interactions with this person (AFAIK, if they show up again then I haven't gotten to that point in the game yet), there really doesn't need to be a spot where they clarify their highly personal discovery of their gender identity.
However, if you're very desperate to include this as explicitly as BioWare intends, I have a solution: have them only mention the "non-binary stuff" to a trans and/or nonbinary Rook. My Rook is nonbinary and people know this about them, and since Rook is becoming well-known, people will know their pronouns and identity. So, have Flynn be like "Yeah, my mentor helped me figure myself out. You know how hard it can be to do on your own, Rook." Ya know? Suddenly, you get what they're talking about without having them to be like "ah yes, have I mentioned I am non-binary today?"
I get wanting to make things explicit, but it happens at the cost of believability and actually representing how enbies exist as people. I don't talk to friendly strangers like "I had a hard time figuring out I'm nonbinary, but I got there in the end!" Most of my classmates only know I'm nonbinary because it says so on my Discord profile, and the same goes for the ones I know are nonbinary. Most of it is just clocking each other across the room or hearing other people use our chosen pronouns.
As for Taash's dysphoria ... That's another long-ass can of worms type post that I might make once I'm finished with the game and have a complete image of their storyline. But rest assured, I have plenty of thoughts on that, as well.

Hello!! I'm gonna use your ask as the place to talk about this, so yes, I really hope this can possibly be helpful to you and others!! This is mostly going to be about dealing with shame surrounding tickling and sort of...why I think it became a kink for me? Trigger warnings for mentions of grooming, sexual abuse, and pornography.
So, I grew up with unrestricted internet access as a child. My parents had no idea how to deal with growing technology, and they really didn't understand how to put child safety features on or how to even check the history, so I could pretty much do whatever I wanted.
From a very young age, I started experiencing the feeling that I thought about tickling differently than other people, but there wasn't really shame about it, I just knew that it...mattered more to me than others? I would describe it as more of a fixation, and now as an adult who has been diagnosed with autism, I'd say it might have something to do with that.
As a very young child, I would look up things about tickling, and I was immediately met with fetish content. Back in the early 2000's, even fanfiction was mostly sexual. Harry Potter ticklefics were all, like, an underage Hermione being non-consensually tickled by magical plants, or Voldemort or Snape using it to torture Harry.
As an impressionable child, I began to internalize the idea that this likely innocent interest in tickling was a dark, perverted sexual deviance and developed a debilitating sense of shame towards it. It's why the word would make me cringe, why I stopped letting my family do it to me, why I would feel disgusted and embarrassed when it happened in shows and movies.
Recently, my partner, our mutual best friend, and I had this very deep talk about fetishes. We all have one that we are deeply ashamed of (obviously I'm not going to share theirs) and both of them have never judged me for a single second about tickling. Whenever it happened in media we were watching, my friend expressed not knowing how to handle it for my sake, because I would very clearly get uncomfortable.
He encouraged me to really think about why it made me uncomfortable, especially in a room with 2 of the only people in my life who would never judge me for it, and I decided to take his advice and really dwell on it.
There had been a reason that I had to bring it up in therapy previously, it's a long and frankly far too personal story to share, but I had really danced around what it was and my therapist ended up asking if she could guess what I was talking about, and she correctly guessed that it was tickling. My therapist is super chill and comfortable talking about literally anything with me, and she didn't make me feel judged at all. In fact, she was like, "I think a lot of people find that hot as like, foreplay at least!" and fully promised me that it was normal and nothing to be ashamed of.
Basically, with a mixture of self-reflection, discussing it in therapy, and talking about it with my partner and our friend, I have come to this conclusion: Being exposed to tickling as a sexual fetish at such a young age, as a child with no prior concept of what sex was or consent or anything, I was conditioned by pornography and inappropiate fanfiction/fanart the believe that there is something perverted and predatory about me liking tickling.
As someone with sexual trauma that was occurring around the same age that I discovered these things online, seeing the constant non-consensual and underage elements in these things made me see myself in the same light as people who were abusing me.
The ironic thing about this is, tickling is not inherently sexual to me, but I never let myself experience it platonically until very recently, because I was convinced I could not separate the sexual aspect from the innocent fixation. Tickling between myself and my platonic friends, or just playful/romantic tickling with my partner is also fun for me, and it doesn't turn me on. But I really struggled to acknowledge that these things could coexist, because I only ever saw the sexual side of it at the most impressionable age.
I have really bad intrusive thoughts, and a lot of self-esteem issues that make it very hard for me to trust myself and view myself in a positive way, so my mentally ill brain essentially convinced me that I was perverted, that I was a predator, etc. for simply...liking tickling. Even though logically I can understand that I am not a bad person, I don't want to non-consensually tickle people, I value consent, all of those important things, I felt like there was just something inherently wrong about liking it, and so, while I have preached being comfortable with it on this blog, I didn't even realize how deeply I have hated myself for years for it.
That is one reason why I think this blog and this community have been therapeutic for me, and why I still rarely write NSFW fanfiction. Tickling is a kink for me, yes, but I can fully separate when a situation is sexual or not. Recently, I have been able to start healing this. The friend I mentioned earlier knows how I feel about tickling and is still comfortable with it happening between us, which has really helped me begin to view it as a fun/safe/platonic thing again, and I'm getting way better at not getting uncomfortable when it happens in media.
My therapist has suggested doing some deeper work on this, but I kind of feel like I got to the bottom of the problem and am already feeling a lot better about it. However, I'm sure it will come up again.
I just wanted to share this because I always said talking about tickling in therapy would be my worst nightmare, that I would never do it, etc. and it ended up being a really positive experience that has made me so much more comfortable in myself and liking tickling.

Maxine Caulfield, better known as Max (born September 21, 1995) is the main protagonist of Life is Strange. She is an 18-year-old aspiring photographer and senior at Blackwell Academy. She left her mom and dad in Seattle for the seaside town of Arcadia Bay, Oregon, where she grew up. After saving her childhood friend Chloe Price from being killed by Nathan Prescott in one of Blackwell Academy's bathrooms, she discovers she has the ability to rewind time and even stop it in its tracks. On the search for clues to solve the mysterious disappearance of Rachel Amber, Max must also discover how to use her powers to help Chloe find her missing friend.
Max!Yuu is rarely seen without their trusty vintage camera. They’ve started a photo journal of their time in Twisted Wonderland, capturing both the beauty and chaos of the magical world. The students find it fascinating, though some (like Leona and Vil) might be more critical of being photographed without permission.
Their time-rewinding ability is subtle but game-changing. They might use it to fix awkward social interactions, avoid minor disasters (like food exploding in the cafeteria), or redo pop quizzes. However, constant rewinding gives them a deep sense of déjà vu, leaving them emotionally drained at times.
While Max!Yuu and Grim bicker occasionally, they're quiet nature has a grounding effect on him. They often capture candid photos of Grim in his most mischievous moments, which he secretly loves. Over time, Grim becomes their most photographed “subject,” jokingly calling himself their “muse.”
Malleus has also become one of their subjects to photography, max!yuu admits that malleus is perfect for posing as well describing him to be quite beautiful and as well they get some money on the side from sebek buying their malleus photo to hang on the wall. Malleus also keeps some photos.
Malleus feels at ease around them, appreciating their calm demeanor and artistic view of the world. They often share deep conversations under the stars, with them documenting the ethereal beauty of the night sky over Diasomnia. Malleus finds it comforting to be seen through their compassionate lens.
NRC photographer, Crowley started to ask them to photograph places, people or anything, so he doesn't need to spend an extra cost to hire a photographer, who needs one when you have max!yuu.
They also get a job as a magical creature photographer where they take photos of the magical creatures of twst and then study it and admire it, and after analysing it into perfection they sell at a low or high price depending on the animals.
The emotional toll of rewinding time becomes apparent in their quieter moments. They sometimes isolate themselves to recharge, sitting alone in Ramshackle with only Grim for company. Their friends grow to notice this and subtly support them, offering small gestures like snacks or quiet companionship.
In the past, max yuu has also used their abilities to prevent some of the deaths of the character, ruggie originally died in the original timeline back in savanaclaw arc, but max!yuu created a new timeline where ruggie gets to live.
Vil and Max!Yuu form an unexpected bond over art. Vil critiques their photography with a sharp but constructive eye, pushing Yuu to improve. Over time, Vil secretly admires how Yuu’s work reveals sides of him he didn’t think others could see, such as vulnerability and quiet strength.
As well as rook, since max! Yuu usually have permission to photograph people with consent like Leona and malleus, rook would come up to them and both of them discuss the pictures as well as art stuff
If Max!Yuu ever has the chance to leave Twisted Wonderland, they’d take one final group photo with all their friends, placing it at the heart of their memory wall. It would be the picture they cherish most, representing the strange, magical world that became their second home.
