Okay listen, I know when people say Pirate AU they mean like Pirates of the Caribbean style, but CONSIDER-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The nickname happened because when Eddie really feels like leaning into the pirate gimmick, he has this fire engine red fake beard from a Halloween costume Jeff lost ages ago that he puts on to deal with customers. He gets an inordinate amount of delight watching them internally speedrun the 5 stages of grief as they realize he's the only reputable dealer outside the city, so if they want their drugs, not only can they not make fun of him, they have to play along.
He secretly knocks a small amount off the final price for anyone who's a good sport about this or improvs for their own volition. It's like a secret test.
Chrissy gets the mother of all discounts because he doesn't bother doing the beard thing with her, and 2 minutes into their deal (after he makes her laugh) she starts playing along with the pirate bit anyway.
Chrissy keeps coming back, in theory for more weed, but in practice just to hang out with Captain Redbeard out on his weird, cannot-legally-be-called-a-boat pirate raft where the company is fun and nobody she doesn't feel up to dealing with can get at her. Like, unless somebody's willing to swim out to them in gross-ass lake water in the middle of autumn, once Eddie's dropped the broken tv he uses as an anchor, Chrissy Cunningham is officially unavailable today. She's not 100% sure why Eddie keeps humoring this, since she's heard stories of him forcing customers that got too pushy and overstayed their welcome to Walk The Plank at tire-iron-swordpoint... but hey, until he changes his mind, she and the pirate hat Drama Club has yet to discover is missing are staying put.
Jason shows up from time to time to try and convince her to rethink their break up 2 months back, and is very put out that she refuses to come back to shore. He is reduced to hollering at her from the dock until he inevitably wears himself out for the day and leaves until tomorrow.

The dead malls of York
Continuing on the theme from my last post about York Galleria, I'm going to talk more about the four now-closed malls in York that came before the Galleria.
The York Mall
Tumblr media
The York Mall opened in 1968, developed by the famous Kravco Company of Philadelphia. It was a fairly large mall for its era (about 700,000 Square feet of retail space, I believe). It was primarily a single-level mall, though in this rare interior photo you can see stairs leading up to a small 2nd level that included a community room and some offices. The opening anchors were JCPenney, Montgomery Ward, and Maryland-based Hochschild-Kohn (seen in the above picture). The mall also featured a Trans-Lux Theater and a flagship location of McCrory's variety store. In fact, the McCrory's distribution center was located directly next door to the York Mall, and a concrete ramp led straight from the distribution center's parking lot right up to the back of McCrory's store around the rear side of the mall. The ramp still exists today as a relic of this bit of McCrory's history. The layout of the mall had Penney's at one end and Wards at the other, with Hochschild-Kohn right in the middle. You'd have to walk through the Kohn's department store to get from one end of the mall to the other.
Tumblr media
Hochschild-Kohn's declined in the 70s, closing their York Mall store in 1975. York's own local department store, The Bon-Ton, opened in this spot that same year. The York Mall remained the largest mall in town for 21 years until George Zamias built the 2-story York Galleria practically next door in 1989. Both The Bon-Ton and JCPenney left the York Mall for the York Galleria when it opened, but it wasn't a total loss because The Bon-Ton kept their store open as a new discount concept called "Bon-Ton Express" on the ground floor and put their corporate offices on what had been the 2nd floor of the department store. Still, the new competition from the Galleria badly hurt the York Mall and forced it to go more downscale. Looking to replace JCPenney, the York Mall signed a lease with Arkansas-based discount store Walmart in 1990 - it was the first Walmart in the state of Pennsylvania and was then the largest in the country at 130,000 square feet. Walmart also built a new Sam's Club right next to Montgomery Ward. At the time, the destructive tendencies of Walmart were not as widely-known.
Tumblr media
The York Mall still did alright for a few more years with its new configuration. But stores in the mall noticed a drop in business after The Bon-Ton Express closed in May of 1992. Bon-Ton executives attributed the closure to Walmart, whose cash registers only faced their parking lot entrance (in other words, you could enter Walmart from the mall, but you have to leave out towards your car). Burlington replaced Bon-Ton Express in 1993, but it didn't do much to help sales at the small shops. Around the turn of the century, the demise of Montgomery Ward and McCrory's left gaping vacancies in the north end of the mall while an expansion of Walmart into a 240,000 square foot supercenter swallowed up the entire south end of the mall. It didn't take long after that for the remainder of the mall to be demolished.
North Mall
Tumblr media
The North Mall - "the first completely carpeted, enclosed shopping center in the East!" - opened in 1969, as the 2nd enclosed shopping mall in York, PA. It was a smaller mall that was sort of split level; the upper level was fully enclosed and anchored by The Bon-Ton and a G.C. Murphy's variety store. At the end opposite of Bon-Ton, an artistic ramp took you down to a lower level that turned into an open air strip mall. This section was anchored by a J.M. Fields discount store, which included a Pantry Pride discount grocery store inside. The whole mall was owned by Food Fair Properties, which shared the same parent company (Food Fair) as Pantry Pride and J.M. Fields.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Food Fair became a pretty large company in the 60s and early 70s, having expanded its subsidiaries Pantry Pride and J.M. Fields nationally. But the business then began to suffer, leading to bankruptcy and the closure of all J.M. Fields stores in 1978. The Pantry Pride at North Mall closed as well. The anchor building that had housed Fields and Pantry Pride was large and difficult to find a replacement tenant for. It housed women's apparel store Marianne's for a few years in the late 70s/early 80s.
Tumblr media
1981 brought the opening of West Manchester Mall, a project of famous developer Crown American Corporation. Compared to the nearby North Mall, West Manchester was much newer and larger. The North Mall had never updated, and was still very much a fully-carpeted, flower-patterned product of 1969. The Bon-Ton closed at North Mall to open a new store at West Manchester when it opened. The Bon-Ton was quickly replaced by the 4th location of discount department store Mailman's. Ironically, Mailman's had a collaboration with The Bon-Ton wherein Bon-Ton would supply their own apparel merchandise at Mailman's stores, so Bon-Ton never totally left the North Mall after all. At that point, the North Mall felt pressured to go downscale, so the mall became known as the "North Mall Factory Outlet Center". Burlington opened in the former J.M. Fields location in 1983, and the mall kept afloat for a while. In 1984, G.C. Murphy's closed their store, apparently in violation of a 20 year lease they had signed which did not expire until 1989 (this prompted a lawsuit from the mall). In 1988, the collaboration between Mailman's and Bon-Ton ended, so the North Mall Mailman's lost its whole apparel department. By the end of that same year, Mailman's closed after failing to reach a lease deal with North Mall management. This was the last staw for North Mall, which by 1990 was slated for redevelopment into "Manchester Crossroads," a strip mall. It was the first mall in York to be de-malled.
Delco Plaza Mall
Tumblr media
The Delco Plaza Mall was a small, discount-oriented mall opened in 1974 in west York, not far from the North Mall. It featured Hills and Grant City (both discount department stores) as anchors as well as a United Artists movie theater in the mall and a Pathmark grocery store in the parking lot. The UA theater was the first 3-screen cinema in York and drove a lot of traffic into the mall. The name of this mall has always confused me because "Delco" is common shorthand for Delaware County, PA, a county which York is very much not located in. The first issue for Delco Plaza was the bankruptcy of W.T. Grant Co., the parent company of Grant City. This resulted in what was then the largest retail bankruptcy liquidation in American history when all of the Grant's stores closed in 1976. Many former Grant Cities, including the one at Delco Plaza, were snatched up by Kmart for new stores.
In 1981, the West Manchester Mall opened, hurting smaller, older malls like Delco Plaza. At some indeterminate time after this, the UA cinema in the mall was downgraded to a cheaper, second-run theater, which had an adverse effect on mall traffic. The Pathmark also closed, and slowly the stores inside the mall began to go under as well. Though the addition of some new tenants like a post office branch and liquor store helped keep the mall open, it was not enough to save it. Hills, struggling in face of competition from Walmart in particular, was bought out by Ames discount department stores in 1999. Ames, in turn, went out of business in 2002. Kmart closed shortly thereafter. The mostly vacant mall faced demolition in 2005.
West Manchester Mall
Tumblr media
The West Manchester Mall was developed by Crown American, one of the nation's largest privately-owned real estate developers, in 1981. It was located in west York, nearby the much smaller North Mall and Delco Plaza Mall. It was a modern, single-level mall, about the same size as the York Mall on the other side of town. It featured The Bon-Ton, Hess's department store of Allentown (which at the time was a subsidiary of Crown American itself), and Gee Bee discount store of Johnstown as its anchors. West Manchester had little drama in its early years as it enjoyed dominance in west York while being far enough from the York Mall on the east side of town to maintain a delicate balance. That balance was only really upset in 1989 by the opening of George Zamias' York Galleria. The Galleria was much larger than any other mall in York, and drew a lot of business away from the York Mall in particular.
Tumblr media
In 1992, Gee Bee, which had just survived a bankruptcy filing, was bought by rival discount store Value City. Then, in 1993, Hess's department store was circling the drain after recklessly opening too many locations too far from its home base. It closed at West Manchester, and Crown American signed a lease with Walmart to fill the space. Crown also expanded the mall in 1995, adding a new wing leading to a new Hecht's department store of Maryland. A few years later, they renovated the mall again and added a 13 screen Regal Cinemas to occipy vacant store space and keep the West Manchester Mall competitive. But the decision to bring in Walmart turned out to be a long-term curse for the mall itself, as Walmart chose to expand into a supercenter in the early 2000s. Just as it did at the York Mall, the West Manchester Walmart took over what used to be a whole wing of the mall when it expanded. Hecht's became Macy's in 2005, and Value City went out of business in 2008, to be replaced by Kohl's. A big nail in the coffin came when in 2011 The Bon-Ton announced that their store at West Manchester was "not performing as well as it should" and would close at the end of their lease the following January. At this point, Regal was mostly the only thing keeping people coming into the mall. The mall was sold in 2012 to new owners who pledged a nearly $50 million renovation to transform it into the West Manchester Town Center, an open-air retail center. With this closure, the York Galleria became the only surviving mall out of five in York, PA.

Mastering Your Business with POS Systems: A Comprehensive Guide
Navigating the complexities of business operations can sometimes feel like steering a ship through stormy seas. If you find yourself caught in a whirlwind of receipts, customer orders, and inventory checks, it might be time to anchor your ship with a reliable Point of Sale (POS) system. Whether you're in the market for a furniture POS system, a Brewery POS System, a Dry Cleaners POS System, a Boutique POS System, or a Jewelry POS System, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about POS systems, their benefits, and how to choose the right one for your business.
Tumblr media
What is a POS System?
At its simplest, a Point of Sale (POS) system is where the customer completes a transaction. Think of it as your business's financial command centre. It includes hardware (like registers and scanners) and software that manages sales, inventory, and customer data.
Have you ever wondered how this system could streamline your operations?
Instead of using multiple systems or manual processes, a POS consolidates everything, making it easier to manage sales and customer relationships.
Why is a POS System Essential for Your Business?
A POS system is essential for several reasons:
Increased Efficiency: With a POS, transactions can happen faster, reducing wait times for your customers.
Real-Time Inventory Management: Never worry about running out of stock unexpectedly. A POS keeps track of your inventory in real-time, so you know when to reorder.
Data-Driven Insights: A good POS system provides detailed reports on sales trends, helping you make informed decisions about your business strategy.
Improved Customer Experience: Personalise interactions by tracking customer preferences and purchase history, leading to higher satisfaction.
Integration Capabilities: Many POS systems can integrate with eCommerce platforms, accounting software, and other tools, creating a seamless operation.
Understanding How a POS System Works
So, how does a POS system operate? Here’s a simple breakdown:
Scanning Items: Items are scanned using a barcode scanner, which adds them to the transaction automatically.
Calculating Totals: The system calculates the total, including taxes and discounts, instantly.
Processing Payments: It supports various payment methods, whether cash, card, or mobile payments.
Generating Receipts: Finally, a receipt is issued, either printed or emailed to the customer.
This streamlined process saves time, reduces errors, and enhances customer satisfaction.
Tailoring POS Systems to Your Industry
Let’s explore how specific industries can benefit from tailored POS systems.
Furniture POS System
Running a furniture store can be complex, with various products and customer needs. A dedicated furniture POS system can simplify operations:
Order Customisation: Customers often want custom furniture. A specialized POS can handle these orders efficiently.
Space Management: Large items require careful inventory management to optimize floor space.
Delivery Scheduling: Some POS solutions offer delivery management features, simplifying logistics.
Can you imagine the relief of having everything under control?
Brewery POS System
For breweries, the atmosphere is vital, but so is efficiency. A Brewery POS System addresses unique challenges:
Tap Management: Monitor sales from multiple taps and keep track of inventory for each type of beer.
Loyalty Programs: Implement customer loyalty programs directly through your POS, encouraging repeat visits.
Batch Tracking: Keep an eye on your brewing process, ensuring quality control from start to finish.
How cool would it be to run your brewery with this level of efficiency?
Dry Cleaners POS System
Running a dry cleaning service has its challenges. A Dry Cleaners POS System can make your life easier:
Order Tracking: Easily manage and track orders from drop-off to pick-up.
Customer Preferences: Keep track of special requests and preferences for each customer.
Inventory Management: Monitor cleaning supplies, ensuring you never run low.
Imagine how much smoother your operations would run!
Boutique POS System
For boutiques, providing an excellent customer experience is crucial. A Boutique POS System can enhance that experience:
Mobile Checkout: Use tablets for quick checkout anywhere in the store.
Customer Profiles: Build detailed profiles to personalize shopping experiences.
Visual Merchandising: Integrate with display systems to enhance product presentation.
Wouldn’t it be amazing to create a shopping atmosphere that keeps customers coming back?
Jewelry POS System
Selling jewelry requires finesse and attention to detail. A Jewelry POS System can help you shine:
Security Features: Protect valuable inventory with enhanced security measures.
Custom Design Catalogues: Showcase custom designs and track orders seamlessly.
Repair Management: Keep track of repair requests and timelines effectively.
Think about the peace of mind that comes with a well-managed inventory!
How to Choose the Right POS System
Choosing the right POS system can feel overwhelming. Here are some key considerations:
Understand Your Business Needs: Assess what features are essential for your business. Do you need inventory management, customer tracking, or online integration?
Consider Your Budget: POS systems come in a wide range of prices. Ensure you choose one that fits your budget while providing necessary features.
Look for Scalability: As your business grows, your POS system should be able to scale with it. Look for systems that offer additional features or modules as needed.
Read Reviews and Seek Recommendations: Learn from others’ experiences. Reviews can provide valuable insights into the reliability and effectiveness of a system.
Evaluate Customer Support: Good customer support can make all the difference when you encounter issues. Choose a provider that offers robust support services.
Common Questions About POS Systems
What is the Cost of a POS System?
The cost of a POS system can vary widely based on features and capabilities. You might find basic systems for under £500, while more advanced systems can cost several thousand pounds. Don’t forget to account for additional fees for software updates and support.
Do I Need to Train My Staff?
Most modern POS systems are designed to be user-friendly. However, providing training for your team can help them utilise the system effectively and improve efficiency.
What Happens if My Internet Goes Down?
Many POS systems can operate offline, allowing you to continue processing transactions even during an internet outage. However, verify this feature with your provider.
Can I Use a POS for Online Sales?
Yes! Many POS systems can integrate with eCommerce platforms, allowing you to manage both in-store and online sales from a single system.
Maximising Your POS System
Once you have chosen a POS system, consider these tips for maximising its potential:
Regular Software Updates: Keep your POS software updated to ensure you have the latest features and security patches.
Utilise Reporting Tools: Take advantage of reporting tools to analyse sales trends and make data-driven decisions.
Encourage Staff Feedback: Regularly engage with your team for feedback on the system. Their insights can help identify areas for improvement.
Real-World Success Stories
Let’s take a look at how a couple of businesses transformed their operations with POS systems.
Case Study: A Local Brewery
A small brewery implemented a Brewery POS System that allowed them to track sales from each tap. They introduced a loyalty program through the POS, which rewarded regular customers. Within a year, they experienced a 30% increase in repeat business.
Case Study: An Elegant Boutique
A boutique owner switched to a Boutique POS System with mobile checkout capabilities. Customers loved the convenience of checking out anywhere in the store. This change led to a 40% increase in sales during busy periods.
The Bottom Line: Why Invest in a POS System?
Investing in a POS system is not merely a matter of convenience; it’s about enhancing the way you operate your business. From improving customer experience to streamlining inventory management, a good POS system can be a game-changer.
So, are you ready to transform your business operations?
With the right POS system, you can unlock new levels of efficiency, customer satisfaction, and ultimately, profitability. Don’t wait—take the plunge into the world of POS systems and watch your business thrive!

News Wave AI Review: My Recommendation
News Wave AI presents an intriguing concept for automating news website tasks. However, its limitations in content quality and unproven traffic automation features necessitate a cautious approach. Carefully consider your budget, technical expertise, and content quality standards. Explore alternative solutions like content writing services and SEO optimization tools. Remember, high-quality content and a well-rounded strategy remain key to a successful news website. While AI might offer some automation benefits, human oversight and expertise are irreplaceable. Utilize News Wave AI cautiously, prioritize human editing, and focus on delivering valuable content to your audience for long-term success.

Influence Me
In a not-too-distant past, the shape and feel of advertising and promotion was very different from what it is today. Before social media and the rise of the influencer, marketers leaned on famous athletes, movie stars, popular musicians, and other icons of pop culture to serve as spokespersons for their brand.
While this is still done in small measure—those athletes are typically getting lots of money and merch simply to be seen wearing a certain shoe or whatever—influencers are the new normal. After all, they can be a lot cheaper. I can only imagine how much they had to pay quarterback Joe Namath to wear pantyhose in 1974. I hope it was a lot.
Today, anyone with an Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube channel can become an influencer, and it’s pretty random how it occurs. There are four levels of influencers:
Mega-influencer: More than one million followers.
Macro-influencers: Between 100,000 and one million followers.
Micro-influencers: Between 10,000 and 100,000 followers.
Nano-influencers: Between 1,000 and 10,000 followers.
Turns out we consumers believe the influencers. Sixty-nine-percent of consumers trust recommendations from them, which goes a lot farther than a footballer wearing women’s clothing.
JC Penney is now putting its trust in an influencer, having created the new Stylus menswear brand around LaDarius Campbell. It’s a serious effort meant to help revive a sagging department store brand that has languished in recent years.
Tumblr media
The limited-edition line will hopefully sway men to come to JCP, which may be no small task. I speak from experience with the JC Penney store at Amarillo’s Westgate Mall. They have suffered through supply chain shortages for far too long, with the men’s department looking like an over-shopped thrift store. This may be more about reinventing than just reviving.
The Dallas-based Campbell will host a live styling event at his local JCP, which will also be posted online afterward. Why they are not doing a livestream is beyond me, because it’s not like this is a sporting event with blackout markets.
I have to at least give a little credit to JCP for trying, because it most certainly needs help. The new line is a continuation of similar efforts to bolster its private label collections, which typically have higher margins for the company.
Of course, getting men excited about new clothes may be as likely as getting them to finish that project they started six months ago. The gender divide looms large here. Once again, I speak from experience, purchasing clothing only when I need to, not because I want to. Shopping for clothes is punishment before the judgment.
But then again, maybe enough guys will take a liking not only to the idea of shopping, but also this new line from JCP. The chain, which was born in 1902 in Kemmerer, Wyoming, has seen better days. When Ron Johnson became CEO in 2011, in an effort to revive a company that had taken a hard hit during the 2008-2009 recession, he scrapped coupons and weekly sales. Instead, he chose to use Walmart’s strategy, which is everyday low prices (EDLP).
Short story: It flopped, because JCP’s customers, which were primarily women, loved the thrill of the hunt and thrived on those weekly coupons and discounts. Sales dropped another 25%.
JCP then reverted to coupons and sales promotions, but now, revenues continue to sag. In 2020, an unlikely marriage of two property management companies, Brookfield Property Partners and Simon Property Group, bought JCP for $800 million. This included $300 million in cash, and the assumption of $500 million in debt.
More importantly, the two buyers were helping ensure the longevity of their shopping malls, because losing a major tenant is hard. It is not a good look (I’m thinking about all the Sears and Macy’s closings). But if you own one of your anchor stores, and have enough cash and gumption to keep it afloat, well…you get the picture. These two firms saved JCP from extinction.
And now we are left to ponder if the latest effort will find traction. But if it doesn’t, Joe Namath is still alive. Maybe he’d might like to model menswear this time around.

January 27 - Molly D has been busy since leaving Vero Beach on Tuesday. On Tuesday, Molly D transited from Vero to Hobe Sound (Jupiter).
Tumblr media
Goodbye Vero!! See you again in March.
There weren’t any issues to the day’s travels. Amen! Molly D anchored for the night in an anchorage just off the ICW.
Tumblr media
Hobe Sound anchorage.
On Wednesday, Molly D had a long, tiring transit day. Molly D passed through 18 bridges, only 1 of which was a fixed bridge. The bridge distances were fairly close thus making it difficult to make each opening on time without having to wait long. Nothing is worse than missing an opening bridge by a couple of minutes and then have no to wait a half hour until the next one. Molly D cut it close a few times, but the bridge tenders had no problem in waiting an extra minute or two for Molly D to get to the open bridge. All the bridge tenders we interacted with were pleasant and were considerate when it came to timing. We have had bridge tenders make us wait for a half hour (or sometimes an hour) although we were so close to the bridge.
Tumblr media
One of the 17 “bridges of the day”.
Along the route to Lake Boca, we noticed many new homes being constructed and many docks being repaired or replaced. No shortage of money here!
Tumblr media
Typical size of many of the homes along today’s travel along the ICW.
Molly D anchored for the night just off the ICW in Lake Boca, just off the ICW. No idea why it was called “Lake Boca”, as the anchorage was just off the ICW. There were close to a dozen boats in this anchorage but it did not feel crowded.
Tumblr media
Sunrise in Lake Boca.
Thursday’s travel took Molly D from Lake Boca into Ft Lauderdale. Again, Molly D had to transit the ICW because offshore conditions were nasty. There were only 8 opening bridges along the route!
Tumblr media
Arrival in Ft Lauderdale. All the buildings in the photo and one adjacent to the dock that didn’t make it into the photo are all new construction.
Molly D stayed at Pier 66 Marina. The Marina is undergoing a massive construction project. Despite the daytime noise and dust, Molly D was happy to be in a slip. Pier 66 provided us with a discounted rate because of the construction inconvenience. By the time Molly D was ready to move on, she was covered in dust and needed a really good washdown. That’s what dockside water is for!
Today’s travel to No Name Harbor (Key Biscayne) was done offshore. Due to one 52’ fixed bridge in Miami, Molly D was unable to travel the ICW (yay! No bridges!). The offshore route was no picnic. 20 knot winds on the nose with accompanying 4’-6’ seas. YUK! Uncomfortable but not unsafe. Gotta love Pringles, Dramamine and Emetrol for seasickness cure! I was entertained (distracted) along the way by a couple of frigate birds and a pelican. Frigate bird A had just caught a fish. Frigate bird B decided that it wanted the fish. An in-air fight between the two frigate birds ensued. It was like watching Snoopy and the Red Baron in a dog fight. Frigate bird A accidentally dropped the fish. Both frigates went after it. However, a lucky pelican who happened to be in the right place at the right time, scooped up the fish and swallowed it! The two frigates weren’t happy about that and proceeded to dive bomb the pelican for a minute or so before giving up and flying away. Very entertaining to watch!
Molly D will stay in No Name Harbor for two nights before moving on to Rodriguez Key.

Why did Hema turn around again?
Tumblr media
Hou Yi’s words are not an exaggeration.
If starting a business is to sort out the inside first and then conquer the outside, Hema has only been able to completely sort out the inside HE Tuber nine years after it was founded.
Since its establishment, Hema has tried more than 10 business formats, including Hema F2, Hema mini, Hema Neighborhood, Hema X member store, Hema Outlet, Hema Premier and so on.
Trying means unknown results. According to public data, Hema lost about 3 billion yuan in the first quarter of 2021 alone. It was not until January 2023 that Hou Yi issued an all-staff letter, officially announcing that the main business Hema Xiansheng had achieved profitability; in April of the same year, He said in an interview with the media that Hema has achieved full profitability in the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023.
If what Hou Yi said is true, it will be even more critical for Hema to hold on to this hard-won result. Especially in the face of severe competition, Hema needs to prove itself with sustained profits.
In May last year, Alibaba stated in its financial report that the Alibaba Group's board of directors approved the launch of the listing process for Hema, which is expected to be completed within the next 6 to 12 months. But soon, news came out frequently that Hema's IPO might press the "pause button."
Alibaba said in its third-quarter financial report that Hema's initial public offering plan is on hold while the group is evaluating market conditions and other factors necessary to ensure successful project implementation and enhance shareholder value.
On the other hand, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in November 2023, the national consumer price dropped by 0.5% year-on-year; on average from January to November, the national consumer price increased by only 0.3% compared with the same period last year.
“Price reduction” has become the unified theme online and offline.
Online, JD.com and Taotian have both given up their positioning of focusing on the urban middle class/white-collar population and embarked on the path of low-price strategies; last year’s Double 11, major e-commerce platforms, MCN companies, and anchors also all aimed at “the lowest prices on the entire network.” The dispute over "price" was fierce.
Offline, in the face of the explosive trend of Mixue Bingcheng stores with more than 20,000 stores, consumer brands such as Heytea and Nayuki's Tea have also launched low-priced beverage series.
Similarly, in the supermarket format, not only Hema and Sam's are engaged in a price war, supermarket chains such as Yonghui, Wal-Mart, and Carrefour have also lowered their product prices.
It can be said that Hema and many supermarket brands have also reached a time when they have to change.
Today's low-price strategy has the meaning of "a strong man cutting off his wrist" for Hema, and can even be called a "key move" for Hema. But can this move bring Hema back to life?
3. If the giant changes direction again, what are Hema’s chances of winning?
The low-price strategy has indeed attracted consumers' attention to Hema, but if Hema wants to achieve and maintain full profitability in the short term through "discount reform", how far is the journey ahead?
On the one hand, it will still take time for Hema to shift to a low-price strategy. Since Hema's discount reform was officially launched in October last year, its relationship with its suppliers has attracted widespread attention from the outside world. At the end of December last year, Wang Xiaolu announced that he would stop cooperating with the Hema system because he was dissatisfied with the discount reform. It is emphasized that "the price is the lifeline of the company and dealers, and selling in violation of the price is harmful to everyone's common interests."
Many other brands have also become dissatisfied with Hema, including mid-to-high-end tea consumer brand Chabiubiu. Its founder once issued a long article to denounce Hema, saying that since October 21 last year, Hema’s products have been removed from the shelves, and tens of thousands of boxes of goods have been required to be removed within a time limit; he then accused Hema of unilaterally removing inventory products. The price was reduced from 79 yuan/box to 39.98 yuan/box, causing many customers who had placed orders at high prices through other channels to ask for refunds.
On October 20, 2023, Gu Guojian, a professor at Shanghai Business School, published an article on the public account and revealed that because Hema’s low-price strategy has destroyed the market price system, big brands have begun to suspend and cut off the supply of Hema, and carry out a “strangling” style of encirclement and suppression. ".
This is a problem that Hema must face with its low-price strategy,
but fortunately Hema does not seem to care about the "breakup" of the partnership. It is said that Hou Yi not only forwarded Professor Gu Guojian's article, but also revealed that because of selling a certain milk product at a discount, , Hema has been "banned across the entire network" by the dairy company, adding that this does not affect Hema's determination to promote discounts.
This also shows Hou Yi's determination in reform and his confidence in future victory.
However, the discount reform is just the beginning. Hema will continue to implement the low-price strategy in 2024. According to Sina reports, Hema’s goal is to streamline the number of Hema’s SKUs from the existing 8,000 to about 5,000. . This data means that Hema Fresh will be closer to the two major benchmark brands in the future - Sam's Club's SKUs are controlled at about 4,000 all year round, and Costco's is even less, about 3,700.
Hou Yi also said that in the future, Hema will implement the "753" price system, that is, KA products are 30% off the market price, private brands are 50% off the market price, and late-issue products are 30% off the market price.
A large number of SKUs were "eliminated", and the prices of branded products were discounted by 30%. This was too fast and too fierce. It is understandable that such a strong medicine would make it difficult for partners to resist in a short time.
For Hema, this may be a strategic shift decision, but what is involved behind it is the interests of the entire industry chain. It is difficult for many brand owners to respond to the new price system and supply requirements with a single order, so they can only "resist" by suspending or cutting off supply.
It can be speculated that if Hema cannot smooth out the cooperative relationships with many brand merchants in the supply chain in a timely manner, and does not even care whether they are willing to continue to cooperate with them in the future, it will have an adverse impact on its long-term development.
From another perspective
the discount reform currently implemented by Hema has become a standard feature in the consumer field, rather than an exclusive advantage.
First, Sam's, which is fighting against the "mountain-moving price", is also implementing discounts. Zhang Qing, chief purchasing officer of Sam's Club China, recently told the media that in the last 12 months, Sam's invested nearly 1 billion yuan in cost reinvestment in product prices, allowing dozens of products that members purchase daily to achieve long-term price reductions.
At the same time, other domestic supermarkets are also lowering their prices. Under this industry trend, it is difficult for the discount reform to bring any exclusive advantages to Hema.
Secondly, the sudden rise of real-time retail will also have a huge impact on the domestic supermarket industry. On December 1, 2023, Meituan Maicai quietly changed its name to "Little Elephant Supermarket" and launched a series of price reduction promotions; recently, platforms such as JD Daojia and Ele.me have also made frequent moves in the direction of instant retail.
For Hema, in the current discount reform, its competitors are not only supermarkets such as Sam, Yonghui, Carrefour, and Wal-Mart, but also Xiaoxiang Supermarket, JD Daojia, Tmall Supermarket, Duoduo Maicai, and Dingdong Maicai. and other online platforms.
Hema is currently facing a very complex situation, which is a great test of the strategic determination and execution ability of the helmsman. However, reform will inevitably have pains. What is the chance of Hema winning? It can only take a long time to see the results of the change. At this time, any It's too early to draw any conclusions.

The Pros and Cons of Dropshipping Vapes for Australian Wholesalers
Dropshipping is a good option for new Australian wholesalers who want to enter the vapor product supply chain without taking on inventory risks. This model helps new wholesalers focus on marketing, sales, and order facilitation. They can use dropship vendors' products and infrastructure for stock and fulfillment.
Wholesale Vape Australia dropshipping may seem ideal, but it's important to understand the downsides. This will help ensure that your business model aligns with your long-term goals. This guide looks at the benefits of dropship setups compared to owning inventory. It also considers potential obstacles to scaling if relying solely on outsourced supply chains.
Pros of Wholesale Vape Dropshipping
Dropshipping wholesale Vape Central orders to your retail vapesshop customers clearly saves warehousing space and disables overhead. Lower startup costs give you wider profit margin buffers as you build clientele. Specific benefits encompass:
No investment in hardware, disposables or e-liquids upfront
Avoid licensing for storing vapor products
Outsource age verification compliance
Eliminate staffing for picking/packing orders
Let existing wholesale warehouses handle product defects
From both financial and operational standpoints, dropshipping creates attractive speed-to-market by minimizing complexities wholesalers face when self-supplying retailers. You can dedicate all energy to nurturing vendor terms, outlet acquisition, and sales growth.
Cons of Wholesale Vape Dropshipping
Yet relying exclusively long-term on dropshipping for order fulfillment also imposes compromises, including:
Little control over item availability/inventory depth
Higher per item fees eating margins
Extended lead times on replenishments
Inability to bundle or upsell items
Less wholesale discounts by buying in lower volumes
Restricted customization capabilities
Dropshipper brands might compete against yours
Using drop shippers alone limits the ability to scale and take advantage of wholesale vapebenefits of owning and storing products.

Hybrid Model Benefits
Blending both Vape Bars models combines strengths and balances weaknesses of relying only on dropshipping or solely on owned inventory. Consider using a hybrid approach.
Best-selling devices and e-liquids anchor owned stock
Support dropship replenishment on slower items
Stock trending collections for bundling incentives
Use dropshipping to test new product launches
Warehouse high-velocity flavors and devices
Dropship customizable or made-to-order items
Segmenting inventory sourcing strategically helps wholesalers achieve ideal margins on volume products. It also enables agility in new product trial and targeted promotions.

Tumblr media
In Conclusion
Entrepreneurs can choose between dropshipping and carrying owned stock to enter the wholesale vapes in Australia sector. Both options have advantages that can help them succeed in the market if used wisely. Blending the two approaches can optimize strengths and reduce limitations in the long term.
Contact Waka Vapes Shop to assess the appropriate supply balance for your wholesale goals. They have experience managing cash flows, licensing, age verification, warehousing, order processing, and fulfillment for top vape brands. This experience gives them valuable perspectives on building sustainable and scalable wholesale models adapted to local market conditions.
Use Waka's supply chain insights to decide whether to stock inventory yourself or dropshipping to deliver returns to your retail partners.

The Story of a Cat Door
This is my cat:
Tumblr media
We've had her for almost 7 years now. This is her last Christmas, under the tree. She had been caught as a stray and we adopted her sometime after. She's fixed. She likes to go outside, and given her past, she can take care of herself. If it were up to her, we'd leave the back door open and she could go in and out at will.
The issue is we live in Texas, and if you didn't know, it gets stupidly hot here over the summer. And it's been getting hotter, but that has NOTHING to do with global climate change caused by human action.
Our back yard also opens to a wide ditch that is the home of a variety of animals including other cats, possums and skunks. So we generally don't want to leave the back door open, and installing a cat door is impossible as it is a sliding glass door.
But we have an alternative: The garage. It's not "outside" but it's close enough that the cat is fine with it. But the garage is on the otherside of the house where we spend most of the day. If it were my choice, I wouldn't let the cat into the garage at all, but I have been vetoed by the rest of the family. So they open the door so the cat can go in and out of the garage at will.
Except it's a garage, in Texas. It's not that it isn't insulated, there is some, except for the giant metal door at one end. Yeah, it gets warm in there, but not as much as outside. Regardless, it let's heat into the house, and given the last couple of years of record heat NOT CAUSED BY GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE STOP SUGGESTING IT IS, it's been straining the AC.
Okay, so a month or so ago, they open a new farm supply store, Murdoc's, in the north of the city. It's a large Tractor Supply, basically, with all the same kinds of things, but they had a deal where you got a percent off of anything you fit into a bucket. And you get a bucket! Anyway, in the pet area there was a cat door for something like 17 bucks, and with the discount it was like 15, and I have tool, I can install a cat door in the door into the garage.
So we get it home, I read the instructions, and yeah, it's not that hard. Just have to measure the cat and line it up.
I'm just about ready to go when I start looking at the door and realize there's a problem. The garage floor is about 3 inches lower than the house floor. Getting out, no problem for the cat, getting back in might be a bit harder. Oh, she probably could do it, but she's going to get older.
Okay, that's not good. But it's also an opportunity. My mother mostly uses a wheelchair. She can stand for short periods of time and walk with a walk for short distances, but mostly she's wheelchair bound. If she wants to get into the garage, she has to get out of the chair, step down into the garage, then pull the chair through or grab a spare walker we keep near the door. Putting in a ramp is probably the a good idea for her anyway.
Yeah, I could build a ramp. I just got some concrete bits for my drill, and a trip to the hardware store I can get all the parts to build a ramp. But I can't make it permanent as right where the ramp is sits the dryer, which will have to be moved at some point, right into the path of the ramp. Okay, I can work around that.
Wait, the water heater. It's right across from the dryer, in small closet with a standard door. So I have to remove that door or cut or. . .
Luckily the door isn't in a proper frame, so I take that out and get a cheap according door. But the screws it comes with are too damn short, wouldn't even get into the wood above the drywall of the door frame. Go out, get longer screws. Install the according door.
Tumblr media
Then build the ramp. I stack a 2x2 on top of a 1x2, screw them together then anchor them to the foundation step. Then build the ramp with a couple pieces of plywood (36" long, btw for every 1 inch of drop, you go out 12" for a proper wheelchair ramp). Put in a few spars to support the middle of the ramps, then cover it with carpet tiles and screw the thing into the support step, and that's all that holds it. I then need to put bricks on the ramp because the plywood is warped just enough.
Tumblr media
Okay, now to install the cat door. The only hitch is that the door is VERY heavy. It's a proper exterior door going between the house and garage, as it should be! But it's heavy as hell. Still, with my sister's help, we get it down, cut the hole install the cat door, and put the whole thing back. And we're done!
Tumblr media
So this is the point in the story where I tell you the cat refuses to use the cat door, but not so much. She hasn't opened the flap on her own, no, but she has used it to get in and out of the garage, so I'm calling this a damn win.
That's the end of my story. All so the cat can go into the garage anytime she wants without destroying our electric bill. Just in time for the 100F days to stop.
