So we're about six weeks out from another "most important election of my lifetime" and it's predictably making me literally sick to my stomach. When Trumpacabra got elected in 2016, I threw myself into politics in a way I never had in my lifetime and it almost wrecked me. I was one of those people who never voted for religious reasons (long, separate story) and I felt I had to make up for lost time. By the time 2020 rolled around, I was an unhealthy mess. I had stopped reading. Everything. When I wasn't watching MSNBC and political commentators obsessively, I started consuming absolute junk TV: home improvement shows, crack paranormal ghost hunter crap, etc. Things with no plot, no emotional investment, no danger. No fear.

Right before the 2020 election, old fanfic friends from my days in the Master and Apprentice Star Wars listserv found me and saved me.

They dragged me back into fandom, introduced me to Discord, and got me writing again. I updated a story I hadn't touched in 5 years. I made new friends online and in RL. I got some great fiction and fic recs from those friends and discovered a subgenre called Hopepunk—low stakes fiction with very little if any violence and fear and with happy endings. (Becky Chambers writes a lot of what I read, and Amy Crook has also become a favorite.)

One morning, I had one of those really vivid, realistic, linear plot dreams that literally dragged me out of bed to the keyboard. It was a meet-cute modern au of The Phantom Menace's characters, set in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I cranked out about 2000 words the first day. Then another 2000. Then another 2000. Then another 2000. And so on every damn day for the next four years until I had four novels, about 668k words, several timestamps written by three other collaborators who've come on board, some beautiful art I've been allowed to use, and now a fifth book in the works.

This is the Yooperverse.

It's not just The Fic That Saved Me, it's the place where I'm writing a vision of what the world could be like into being. A place where people with fucking obscene amounts of money don't spend it on themselves, or hoard it, or exploit other people to get more, but use it to help other people. It's a place where people who are bigoted dicks either get their comeuppance and crawl back under their rocks, or learn better and do better. It's a place where abused kids get rescued, everybody gets therapy and healthcare and is paid a living wage, people learn to value themselves and each other, and protect each other and defend each other. It's kinky and queer (although I'm neither) and above all, if not entirely safe to be both, I'm trying to write both things as just being another setting on the dryer. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's not a utopia, by any means, because there are still assholes and the government is still ... the government, and capitalism is still a thing. There's some danger, especially in the first book, and there are accidents and illnesses and the vagaries of life. In the middle of the series, I had spinal surgery and was out of commission for a few months and that made me start thinking more about my main character dealing with aging and the limitations thereof. There's a LOT of mental health issues and the working through thereof, and a lot of ongoing process. Nobody's perfect. The world outside is still pretty much what it is. But in the little corners where my characters dwell, life is pretty dang good, sometimes great.

It's a vision of a life we all deserve. It's the thing I loved about Star Trek's universe, where people's basic needs are cared for and the obstacles to them developing their best selves removed. It's what I've loved about science fiction in general, especially Ursula LeGuin's: that opportunity to explore possibilities that are better than the present. It's modeled on the MacArthur Genius grants, but you don't have to prove your worthiness first. My main character invests in people's potential, young or old, with scholarships and grants and a steadying hand. His partner builds low or no-cost housing for people in need. There's an informal network of queer and straight kid rescuing going on under the noses of unfriendly governments and failed social service safety nets. The main characters build refuges, literal and emotional. They love each other fiercely and respectfully.

Right now, we're living in a country that is almost the antithesis of these ideas, for far too many of us. People are being manipulated by their fears, which are stoked by unscrupulous, lying shitbag politicians whose all too real evil would never make it past the pitch if you were going to try to sell it as a TV show or movie. They're consciously turning us on each other with lies about our common humanity, about the state of our country, about who and what's responsible for many of its faults, sewing suspicion and hate. And though the Yooperverse started as my personal comfort fic, I'm trying in my very small way to counteract what's happening in the world right now.

I've always believed in the power of story to change people's minds and lives, and I've experienced it myself. When I talk about story, I don't just mean fiction, though. I mean the narratives we tell ourselves and others about our own lives as a whole and day by day or moment by moment. I mean the stories we tell about each other when we're together, at the bar, at wakes, at a party. I mean the stories we invest in as fans in whatever kind of media we consume. I mean the stories we spin for ourselves and others to explain what the everloving fuck is wrong with the world.

Stories aren't separate from the world, they are the world. They tell it into being. They give it shape and purpose and meaning and a sense of possibility. Whatever stories we tell ourselves or each other about how things should be or how we should act as human beings (also called our "beliefs" or "morals" or "ethics"), they shape us, and we shape society. We are society, both together and as individuals. One person with a big voice and a story can tip a mass of people into either violence or solidarity.

I have no illusions that the Yooperverse will ever have that kind of power. It has a tiny audience on AO3 and Discord and it's mostly written for me to explore the things I feel deeply about, and wish I could do, and to teach myself to be a better person and live up to my own ideals. It's a world I'd like to manifest, to call into being, even in a small way. Even if it's just a story.

If I've got a long thing to post, it will be in multiple messages back-to-back! But for the commissions, they're being uploaded as PDF files that you can download and read on your own device!

Keep in mind that this discord is not going to function like a normal community space where users can talk to each other, it's my secondary screaming void and archive! There will only be a select small amount of channels that members can post in, and those channels will be for posting fanart or asking me questions like it's my askbox here

Bez Reviews Independent Books #9: A + E 4Ever

Hey everyone! I wanna do little reviews/writeups for the independently-published books I find on itch.io, and so, here I am. I want to review one book every month or two (or quicker, if I’m lucky); it’ll get me reading more, and get authors who often go without feedback some thoughts on their work! I think it’ll be cool for everyone!

I’m finally back with lucky number 9! Sorry I haven’t reviewed a book in a while (here is why).

Not too long ago, publisher tRaum Books got in touch with me, and asked if I want to review another book of theirs: A + E 4Ever, by Ryszard Merey (who also runs tRaum Books, if you didn’t know). If that title sounds familiar to you, that’s because my first review of a tRaum novel was a + e (also by Merey). A + E 4Ever is the graphic novel version of that story, which was actually released before the novel, even though the novel technically came first.

a + e was published in 2021, but Merey informed me that it was written in the mid-2000s; the novel was only published after Merey founded tRaum Books. The comic (originally published by Lethe Press) came out in 2011, after the novel was written. A + E 4Ever has just gotten a 2025 rerelease by tRaum, and it was this updated version they were asking me to review.

What tRaum didn’t know is that I actually got a copy of A + E 4Ever one or two months back. Of course, the version I received was the 2011 one, so now that I was going to receive the new one, this became not just a review of one book (and to finally read it instead of leaving it in the “maybe I’ll check it out soon” zone), but an opportunity to compare the new & old versions of the graphic novel to each other. So please look forward to the bout between A + E 4Ever (2025) & A + E 4Ever (2011).

Like I said, A + E 4Ever is a graphic novel, and if you don’t know the story, it’s about two queer friends, Ash & Eu, as they navigate high school, relationships, and growing up. For a full review of the story, you can read my review of the book.

Let’s start with the writing. Now, you would think that, since the words on the page are the same as the book, there wouldn’t be much to comment on here. However, the writing reads differently in a comic compared to a book, simply because of this: the constantly changing perspective.

Sometimes the book is from Ash or Eu’s point of view, in 3rd person limited POV. Other times, it’s 3rd person omniscient, with an invisible narrator able to peek into our main characters’ heads and describe their thoughts & the situation. In the book, the POVs transitioned smoothly via a page break or a paragraph divider. In the graphic novel, this is not the case.

The perspective often changes between pages or panels without warning in the comic, and sometimes this came across as disorienting. Other times it works fine, like when the omniscient narrator tells us things, and Eu & Ash are speaking to each other, narration & dialogue separated. But it can also come across as strange. I wonder if this omniscient voice is Merey’s, guiding his characters where they need to go.

Next, the drawing style (which reminds me of emo art from the early 2000s) in A + E 4Ever is, for the most part, grungy & imperfect, intentionally so in my opinion. It serves to highlight the messiness of the story and the relationship between Ash & Eu. That doesn’t mean the art can’t be beautiful, though, as it definitely can be and is. The best parts of the book’s art for me are when the main characters are drawn in closeup, and when Ash’s dream sequences are illustrated, each part of the dream taking up a full page.

The style reminds me of manga sometimes, at least to my untrained eye. Especially in the way Ash is drawn—every image of him looks like he’s the male love interest of a shojo manga. Due to this, it’s easy to see why he’s seen as girlish by everyone around him. Eu, on the other hand, looks like the protagonist of a shonen story, complete with having too many belt buckles (on her shoes, but STILL! /j *).

The graphic novel weighs heavily on the “novel” part of that description. Some of pages have way more text than you’ll usually see in a comic. This felt more “tell” than “show” to me, and was a lost opportunity to give art to some important moments.

On the other hand, the comic beautifully illustrate scenes that, until then, I’d only read in the book, emphasizing the emotions of the characters with every stroke of the pen. What does loneliness in the spotlight feel like? Well, something like this:

Sometimes, I liked the novel’s depiction better; other times, the graphic novel reigned supreme. As an example, compare these depictions of the same scene:

The graphic novel also illuminated some things I hadn’t realized from reading the book, such as the fact that the mysterious girl Ash dances with near the end is, in fact, Eu:

But it also withholds things that I’d read about in the novel, and would’ve like to see in the comic. For example, we don’t really get pictures of Ash’s drawings, aside from the ones he does of Eu. We’re told in the novel that he draws lots of angels & demons, and this is only shown to us through text in the graphic novel.

We also never see Eu’s drawings—the fact that both she & Ash make art is a key part of how they bond, and I’m sad that wasn’t fully represented in the comic.

Another thing not fully depicted is just how awful Ash’s home is—messy and smelly, with his room being an escape from all that disorganization. We see it in the text, sure, but I would have loved to see it drawn out further, the chaotic state of the place on full display.

I could go on about other things I would have liked to see visually in the graphic novel, but I don’t want this part to go on too long, so I’m going to move on with other points.

All of A + E 4Ever shows a very thoughtful use of black & white space, in the art & panel work (we’ll get to the latter later). Black around the panels is used to show loneliness, emptiness, darkness, the dreamspace, etc. White shows transcendence, peace, the feeling of things being just right, etc.

The levels of gray on the pages (watercolor, perhaps? Or maybe copic markers?) add a level of depth to the art, and shows texture & color. I think my favorite part of the penwork is the crosshatching that appears now & then; I’m a sucker for good crosshatching. All in all, black & white (& gray) graphic novels can’t get much better than this.

Also, my favorite parts of the art? The angry/eating faces (which are mainly Eu’s, but background characters & Ash get a few in there too):

Next, a look at the fonts. There are several different fonts present, and each serve a different role

Note that I said “mainly used” for the majority of those. This is because sometimes, those fonts break the rules that were established and are used for other things. I would prefer if there was consistency with how those fonts were used. It would read much easier.

You might also notice that some of those are not easy to read. No issues with the 1st (mainly used) font, but the others can be tough. Sometimes context helps interpret what’s being said, but not always. The 2nd font (inner thoughts) is especially difficult to decipher, and I found myself squinting and bringing the book to my face quite a few times to interpret the words.

The 4th font (for subheadings) is the one I found the most readable overall (aside from the 1st font, I mean). I noticed that it’s lighter in the 2025 update, which helps make it easier to decipher than in the 2011 printing.

Also, the 3rd font (for chapter titles) has a backwards “e” in it, which can also make it hard to read at times, unfortunately. When reading the German quote (“Mein Gott, hilf mir diese tödliche Liebe zu überleben,” which translates to, “My God, help me survive this deadly love.”), I wasn’t sure at first if it was a different language, or if the backwards “e”s had finally gotten to me.

Finally, the panel work. With so much text, the panels had to go the extra mile. Because of this, the average panels per page was around 5 (with plenty of dialogue in them, sometimes in boxes, and other times floating free), but some pages had 7+ panels in them. You don’t see much diversity in the panels’ shape, so it’s mostly the old reliables: rectangles & squares.

What you do see a lot of, though, are borderless panels, and this is where things shine.

There are lots of parts of the story that are told within the open space of a page. Some panels are even the entire page itself. Remember when I said the book thoughtfully uses black & white space? The panel work is a big part of that.

In A + E 4Ever, panel borders are a suggestion, not a rule. Often times, the lines don’t even connect, leaving the panel leaking into empty space. It makes for a unique look, and fits our out-of-the-ordinary characters.

So, what has changed in the 2025 revised version compared to the original publication in 2011? Ryszard Merey answers this question in a new page at the end of the 2025 comic, titled “ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-changes”:

“[M]y tweaks are rather random and not particularly conclusive. They do not fix, update nor alter the book in any meaningful way—I neither can nor want to do that, being in such a different place from when I first made this, so why change anything at all? Honestly, I don’t know, but I do feel a lil better.”

So, no revisions change the story or characters in a significant way. However, it was interesting to see what characters changed in appearance:

Also, the cover in the new version is more saturated compared to the old, and the new book is slightly bigger? Perhaps so you can tell at a glance which version you have. Or it could just be a printing error in my copy.

The last thing to discuss is the fact that this is (as Merey calls it) a “proto-trans” story, which is something I did not realize. To quote the changes page:

“Why is this classified as a trans story when neither character comes out, is out, nor is the word trans used in the book? Is a question that has been sometimes asked and my answer is, cause back then, us teen eggs didn’t have a fraction of today’s awareness, we floated, confused, desperate to connect with someone who also felt what we had no definitions for yet. At least, I did.”

It's important to know that A + E, whether novel or comic, is a period piece, capturing life in the early 2000s, with its period-age music and MP3 players and emo/scene clothing. That’s something I don’t think I emphasized enough in the original review. Also, these teens are both Jewish, which affects their heritage, upbringing, and how people treat them.

Merey also states that, “[T]his was the book where I drew out my nameless feelings.” and tells us that he legally transitioned and changed his name. I’ve also made a lot of art trying to process things I didn’t understand about myself yet, gender feels and all that. So I can definitely relate.

As for the characters being trans, it makes perfect sense, but my trans-dar didn’t really go off when reading it, so it kind of surprised me (not that my trans-dar is very functional anyway). I kind of pinned Ash & Eu as a rosboy & azurgirl respectively (likely because I have characters who identify with those labels), but perhaps there was more of a connection to transness than I realized. Where’s the fanfic where they meet up ten years later and both have transitioned? I’LL WRITE IT IF I HAVE TO, YOU BASTARDS! /hj /silly **

But it all raises one question: why was the book updated at all? Merey states on the itch.io page:

“Originally published by Lethe Press in 2011 and called by one librarian “possibly the queerest thing [I’ve] ever read” this zine-like graphic novel was one of the first at the time to feature queer (undefined? proto-trans??) teenagers simply being themselves. As trans lit blossomed in the late 2010s, I wasn’t much concerned with keeping this story around, but in light of recent attacks on trans validity, and the steady pressure to sanitize queer media beyond that, I’ve decided to put this title back into circulation. So here it is, in all its janky, problematic glory: a messy traditional brush-ink and scratches late 90s high school slice-of-life following a foul-mouthed butch-in-waiting (?) and the prickly andro artkid she takes under her wing.” (emphasis added)

Merey also told me this in DMs:

“My contract with Lethe ran out for the graphic novel and I wasn't keen on continuing with them, so I (at first) thought I'd just let the graphic novel kinda quietly die. Especially with the more recent heavy attacks on the validity of trans identity in the US, I reversed that decision, because I think the GN is a good example of (they are not labeled as trans in the book as the word was not used at the time), trans coded teenagers in an earlier time, before internet influence.”

We need complicated queer stories more than ever, and I’m glad this book was brought back.

To conclude, A + E 4Ever is just as messy & queer as the book, and presents the story with a style that matches the tone. I really like it, despite the fact that I had some negative points. The art & panel work is great, and manages to contain the mountain of text within quite well. I would recommend it.

But here’s a tricky question: would I recommend the graphic novel, or the written novel? Personally, I lean slightly towards the graphic novel, simply because the art says a lot more to me than the written word does. However, some may prefer the novel, with its more detailed descriptions of various scenes. Regardless of what you choose, I can also see why the comic translated so easily into a novel, because with how much text there is, it’s already halfway there.

21+ currently obsessed with high, dark fantasy settings. Really inspired by things like Souls-games right now (Dark Souls, Elden Ring) and fantasy like DnD, Baldur’s Gate, The Elder Scrolls/Skyrim, Lord of the Rings/Tolkeinn, Game of Thrones/George Martin, etc - you get the vibes. Worlds full of different creatures, monsters, magic, dungeons, gods, ghosts, curses, different kinds of kingdoms, etc. I’m quite leaning to something more in the line of Elden Ring/dark fantasy in particular, with a lot feuds, fighting, wars, factions, magic, etc. I’d love to do an ocxoc rp in such a setting. I’m open to any pairing + trans/nb characters. Bring me your rogues, your Chosen One, your mages, your elves, monsters, demigods, corrupt characters or good knights, healers, old warriors, legends, disgraced characters, fallen from grace characters, etc. The more unique the better! Open to non-human/not entirely human characters as well. Give me 8 feet tall people, people with 4 arms, eldritch abominations, animalistic creatures, etc!! Go wild! I’m definitely open to multi muse for this and fleshing out the world, but to give us a base, we could start with two setting out on an adventure together or stumbling upon one another and travelling together, something like that? Bring some ideas my way and we can brainstorm together!

I have very few limits and am open to dark, heavy topics, violence, gore, etc. I won’t rp underage content or rp out SA scenes though - mentions in backstory are fine, I just don’t want to write it. Would love some dark stuff at some points but we can figure that out together and all limits will be respected! I write on discord, advanced literate/novella style (1000-2000 words typically per reply) and of course not every reply has to be super long and I’m open to doing shorter style side threads if we need a break, but I tend to lose interest in really short replies. Open to smut - most of my characters are switches and I prefer to see what feels natural for our characters and don’t rush smut. Open to fading to black and also doing purely platonic dynamics. Open to all pairings - most of my characters tend to be cis amab or nb amab (I do also play trasnmascs, transfems and cis afabs though lol). I love queer dynamics so bring them all my way!! Unconventional dynamics too are awesome!! I love complex, nuanced characters and nuanced, realistic relationships too!! Open to realistic, drawn, animated, and description faceclaims and will probably use a mix myself. This is getting way too long now so I’ll round it out, but like if interested and I’ll reach out. yknow this is an extremely weird problem to have, but it's still a problem for us.

so, we write a lot of our stories on Discord in a series of private servers. categories are universes -> channels are specific AUs and story-lines -> threads are specific chapters. right?

and Discord has given at least a subset of users, if not everyone, free Discord nitro for a week. no need to input information either, it's just given to you. one of the perks of nitro is that it allows you to send messages with 4000 characters, not just 2000.

"that sounds great for writing!" you might be saying. and it would be. if we had nitro all the time.

the problem we're now running into is that the length of messages will be inconsistent, so it'll be harder for us to tell at a glance how long this/these chapter/s actually is/are because some messages are 2k characters and some are 4k characters. and the limit being shorter actually helps us, because finishing a message is a goal in of itself, which encourages us to keep writing--but now that each message is 4k characters long, that goal now takes longer to achieve, thus de-motivating us--particularly since we're used to 2k characters per message, so now the dopamine hit we're expecting only happens half as often. it would be fine if it's usually 4k characters because we'd know to expect it at a certain time, but because it's usually 2k characters, we expect it more often than it'll be with the increased character limit.

"wait... hold on, why are you writing on Discord in the first place??? couldn't this be fixed by just writing somewhere else?"

theoretically, yes. in practice, no, because:

(A) the dopamine hit of meeting the goal of finishing a message helps keep us motivated. you don't necessarily get that with writing on other platforms; sure, you could set a goal of every 500 or 1000 words, but you aren't automatically alerted once you've hit it, unlike with Discord where you have to start typing up a new message once you've gotten to that 2k limit. (B) trying to write anywhere that's even slightly meant for writing stories or documents (eg., OfficeWord, LibreOffice, CalmlyWriter (which is nice since it has in-built openDyslexic and you can enable typewriter noises), Google Docs, etc) makes us feel like we Have to write, and we Have to write Good, which puts too much pressure on us so we end up not writing at all. Discord is a social chatting app designed primarily for gamers, ergo it's not for writing, ergo there's no pressure to write and especially not to write "good", ergo we actually write in the first place because we don't feel pressured. it's the same concept as people writing in comic sans because the meme-iness of the font takes the pressure off. (the only other option that has the same "no stress" environment we've found is the notes app on our phone, but we rarely actually have our phone on us)

and the worst part?

we can't turn it off.

thank you for the past year and a half. i can't say it enough. turning this blog into what it is today has changed my life in a myriad of ways that i am forever grateful for. its made me realise that maybe my silly ramblings are worth writing and that there are folks out there that actually like the string of words my brain puts together.

as a gift from me to you, in honour of my (late) year anniversary and 700 followers, i've decided to open my commissions. at the moment, i can only guarantee a total of 10 slots before my brain starts to turn on itself. if this goes well, i'll consider opening comms again in the future and increase the slot amount :)

the “needs to be said”s

here on final nail, we aim to create a community that is laid-back, welcoming, and close-knit. to achieve this, we firmly believe that the comfort of standing members comes first, and that every incident should be take on a case-by-case basis. we do not operate on a “warnings” system ― depending on the severity of the situation, you may just get a slap on the wrist, or you may be banned and kicked.

we have an absolutely 0 tolerance policy for harassment of any kind, nor do we accept any out-of-character bigotry. as we do consider ourselves a darker setting, we’d like to note that things that may appear in play absolutely do not reflect the writer’s view on a subject. if a player is found to be spreading racist, xenophobic, lgbtphobic, etc rhetoric, they will be removed from the community immediately and not welcomed back under any circumstances.

powerplaying and godmodding without player permission is strictly prohibited. for combat, if needed, we have a dicebot on the discord to help you decide the outcome of those threads. when it comes to godmodding, always ask the player in which the information affects. unless they have given you their permission, you may NOT use information your character isn’t aware of.

all members of FN must join our discord. all rules that are laid out here must also be followed in the discord.

site content

final nail is a mature, 18+ rp with a rating of 3/3/3. this means that players may include any amount of language, violence, and sexual content. however, this does not make the site a free-for-all. while we accept these topics to be used in threads, there are some limits to what we will allow to be written. characters may be written using hard drugs, participate in extreme violence, and other such subjects.

this list includes topics that may be included in your character’s backstory, as long as they do not romanticize / glorify the situation, the victim is treated written with respect and dignity, and the character is not a perpetrator of the listed triggers.

incest, sexual assault / rape, lack of consent in sexual situations, csa, and sexual deviancy such as pedophilia

the following topics may not be used in threads or character backstories.

zoophilia / beastiality, use of omegaverse lore

if a thread includes triggering or mature content, you must tag it as having such content. you can do this by using our trigger warning template in your posts, and by tagging the thread’s title with [tw] / [m]. we also ask that if your character participates in a thread that contains kink or bdsm content, that the specific content is tagged.

discriminatory content in a y2k background

we are set early in the year of 2003 in the united states. in the real world, this was an extremely turbulent time, with the war in the middle east being at its height, as well as islamophobia being rampant around the world. a lot of tragedies happened and a lot of people died or were killed. in general, the early 2000s were a horrible time for all sorts of discrimination, and we will not bar players from including these topics in their writing as staff feels that it would be a gross erasure of very real problems. however, we do ask that players proceed with EXTREME care, and note that any threads said to mention heavy topics maybe be subject to monitored in order to ensure that the subject is being handled respectfully. we also ask that you discuss anything and everything with your writing partner before it’s included in a thread. these are topics that still affects people in their real lives every day, and can be extremely triggering for many.

we heavily encourage members to read our culture guide section on the effects of the war on terror, as well as islamophobia post-9/11. this guide also has resources on other prevalent issues of the time. we also encourage members to do their own research, search for their own sources, and educate themselves before attempting to touch the topic at all.

character creation and threading

members should register an ooc account before registering a character account. all information on your member profile MUST be filled in before your character can be accepted. your ooc account does not have graphics other than an uploaded avatar. otherwise, this is all of your ooc information, such as your triggers, no-goes, and other such information. all characters must be over the age of 18.

final nail does not have a minimum word count for threads, nor do we have a character limit. we do, however, ask that you know your limits, and know what you can handle. communication is key here, and if we don’t see the activity then we won’t be seeing new characters. your first six characters are totally free, but after that, you will need twenty-five posts ACROSS all existing characters. this does not mean that you need twenty-five posts on every single character. you may have one post on one character, three on another, so on and so forth. we should see at least one post on all existing characters, and the posts may be either threads or comms.

when creating a character, we require all profile fields to be filled out in full unless they do not apply to your character. this especially includes the “commonly appearing triggers” section of the profile. the commonly appearing triggers section lets you put topics that your character often mentions in threads. for example, if your character john doe is a drug addict, he may often mention drugs in threads he partakes in. this will immensely help any admins planning events pair you to a partner, and help potential partners know what they may or may not be getting into. if this does not count for your character, please simply print “none” into that field.

on final nail, we encourage people to play characters that are queer, transgender, and/or a person of color. we ask that you please do research into any group that you may not be a part of before writing said group. we absolutely will not tolerate racebending or whitewashing and we suggest you find faces that accurately depict your character.

when writing transgender characters, we will allow any face to play any gender identity, as long as you are not going against a trans person’s gender identity. for example, we would allow a hunter schafer faced character to play a trans woman, a cis woman, and transfemme person, BUT we would not allow players to play her as a trans man or transmasc person. if you are using a cis face to play a trans character that appears opposite of their presentation, then that’s totally fine! not all trans people want to have procedures done or take hormones, or some can’t! we just ask that people are open-minded, accepting, and remember the time that we’re in, things weren’t nearly as accessible as they may be today.

face claims

all characters must have a face claim, and all characters must be over the age of 18. we do NOT have a +/- between face/character ages, we just ask that the character’s graphics match the age that they appear. for example, joseph gordon levitt has resources from his younger years, which could realistically play a person in their early 20s. we do not allow faces that are deceased, currently incarcerated, or are considered problematic in nature. faces that are problematic in nature would include the likes of (but are not limited to): johnny depp (abuser), amber heard (abuser), armie hammer (sa allegations / abuser), michael fassbender (sa allegations), and noah schnapp (loud and proud zionist).

activity and canons

final nail has various “canon” characters. this just means that they are big players within the subplots of the site. these characters have more responsibility, and stricter activity rules than other characters do. canon characters are the only characters with set activity rules.

non-canon characters are simply subjected to a monthly interest check. however, we do have an expectation of activity in some way, so if you haven’t posted on that character in a while and there’s been no communication with us, we will be archiving them. you will always have the chance to unarchive any character by making a non-dev post of any type (comm or thread) with them and asking for said character to be unarchived.

canon characters are required to make at least two thread posts a month. these posts may be of any length (50+ wc), as long as they aren’t comm threads.

3/10/24 "Pulse" JPT3391

I have written my PULSE blog post FOUR TIMES ALREADY! Each time, my computer and tumblr has somehow ERASED my writing, although I've been repeatedly saving it as a draft, and instead it just replaces it with my movie notes! I am at my limit. I have written such a good blog post three times for it to get removed each time. I'm going to try once more for the last time, but If the pulse ghosts take me I won't guarantee this'll stay in writing.

Man, this movie was everywhere. I really enjoyed the message that it was attempting to put out, and although I think Pulse (JP) has a better execution than its American counterpart, I still feel like the film was really really lacking in quite a few places. The pacing, clash between realism and horror, as well as the execution of horror elements in the movie were slightly jarring and broke my suspension of disbelief a few times. But what would I be doing on this blog if not talking about the greater societal context of this movie?

Pulse generally feels like a warning about the internet, rather than a critique. I know this movie came out around 2000, which most in the developed world consider the 'dawn of the internet'. This was when the internet was a "place", rather than a formless entity that existed metaphysically and stayed with you always, like twitter, twitch, instagram, and discord for the IPhone that's perpetually in your pocket and an extension of you. A lot of the people who were negatively affected by the pulse ghosts were people who carried average, everyday lives and varied from technologically savvy to absolute newbie. I think that this served as a statement that anybody could really be negatively affected by more literally, internet usage, and more metaphorically, craving attention and love.

Basically, the internet is a new mode of communication. The main character at the beginning of the film was cited as saying "You're looking for a friend?" Which implies that at the time, the greater Japanese public wasn't utilizing or viewing the internet for technological or business purposes, but rather for connection. This makes the pulse ghosts all the more scarier because this implies that either they themselves are husks of their former person, wandering around aimlessly for social approval, or attempting to take advantage of those who are simply seeking friendship. That I think is a really good metaphor for today's social climate, especially when you take a look at scammers, influencers, and generally troublesome online behavior.

Genuine question for tumblr rpers, what is the aversion to discord as an rp platform when most tumblr rpers wind up needing to use discord anyway as a form of communication? Isn't it just easier to consolidate all your rping to just one platform or do you like to separate it?

Shapeshifting: Euijin has the ability to alter his appearance or form. He is able to change his shape, size, color, density, texture, cellular composition. Through getting familiar with other living beings, he is able to mimic their appearance and composition successfully.

While shifting, Euijin is vulnerable to taking damage. If he is in excessive pain, becomes unconscious or were to die, then he may be involuntarily forced back to his original form. Staying in a single form may have negative effects on Euijin. He may suffer from energy loss, change of behavior and may even malfunction in his shifted form. These are side effects that require quite some time to recover.

Bio-Morphing Taking form of living beings.

This is limited to only living beings like humans or animals. However he has to be familiar with the form’s appearance in order to properly shift. Euijin needs awareness of any and all living forms' limitations and weaknesses; for all living things must abide by the laws of the shape they inhabit.

Post-Mortem Shifting Taking form of the dead.

Euijin is only able to shift into the dead, if he killed the being himself. With this he will automatically absorb their memories, positive and negative, taking a piece of their soul in the learning process to morph into them. The weight of the many negative memories and the murder he's committed is the reason he tends to stray away from this ability as it’s very taxing on his mind.

Fear/Desire Morphing Taking form of someone's fear/desire.

Euijin is only able to take form of someone's active fear and/or desire if he's learned about it. Meaning he must discover this through someone telling him or finding out another way. This being said, if the person conquers their fear while Euijin is shifted then he will be forced back to original form.
