So we're about six weeks out from another "most important election of my lifetime" and it's predictably making me literally sick to my stomach. When Trumpacabra got elected in 2016, I threw myself into politics in a way I never had in my lifetime and it almost wrecked me. I was one of those people who never voted for religious reasons (long, separate story) and I felt I had to make up for lost time. By the time 2020 rolled around, I was an unhealthy mess. I had stopped reading. Everything. When I wasn't watching MSNBC and political commentators obsessively, I started consuming absolute junk TV: home improvement shows, crack paranormal ghost hunter crap, etc. Things with no plot, no emotional investment, no danger. No fear.

Right before the 2020 election, old fanfic friends from my days in the Master and Apprentice Star Wars listserv found me and saved me.

They dragged me back into fandom, introduced me to Discord, and got me writing again. I updated a story I hadn't touched in 5 years. I made new friends online and in RL. I got some great fiction and fic recs from those friends and discovered a subgenre called Hopepunk—low stakes fiction with very little if any violence and fear and with happy endings. (Becky Chambers writes a lot of what I read, and Amy Crook has also become a favorite.)

One morning, I had one of those really vivid, realistic, linear plot dreams that literally dragged me out of bed to the keyboard. It was a meet-cute modern au of The Phantom Menace's characters, set in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I cranked out about 2000 words the first day. Then another 2000. Then another 2000. Then another 2000. And so on every damn day for the next four years until I had four novels, about 668k words, several timestamps written by three other collaborators who've come on board, some beautiful art I've been allowed to use, and now a fifth book in the works.

This is the Yooperverse.

It's not just The Fic That Saved Me, it's the place where I'm writing a vision of what the world could be like into being. A place where people with fucking obscene amounts of money don't spend it on themselves, or hoard it, or exploit other people to get more, but use it to help other people. It's a place where people who are bigoted dicks either get their comeuppance and crawl back under their rocks, or learn better and do better. It's a place where abused kids get rescued, everybody gets therapy and healthcare and is paid a living wage, people learn to value themselves and each other, and protect each other and defend each other. It's kinky and queer (although I'm neither) and above all, if not entirely safe to be both, I'm trying to write both things as just being another setting on the dryer. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's not a utopia, by any means, because there are still assholes and the government is still ... the government, and capitalism is still a thing. There's some danger, especially in the first book, and there are accidents and illnesses and the vagaries of life. In the middle of the series, I had spinal surgery and was out of commission for a few months and that made me start thinking more about my main character dealing with aging and the limitations thereof. There's a LOT of mental health issues and the working through thereof, and a lot of ongoing process. Nobody's perfect. The world outside is still pretty much what it is. But in the little corners where my characters dwell, life is pretty dang good, sometimes great.

It's a vision of a life we all deserve. It's the thing I loved about Star Trek's universe, where people's basic needs are cared for and the obstacles to them developing their best selves removed. It's what I've loved about science fiction in general, especially Ursula LeGuin's: that opportunity to explore possibilities that are better than the present. It's modeled on the MacArthur Genius grants, but you don't have to prove your worthiness first. My main character invests in people's potential, young or old, with scholarships and grants and a steadying hand. His partner builds low or no-cost housing for people in need. There's an informal network of queer and straight kid rescuing going on under the noses of unfriendly governments and failed social service safety nets. The main characters build refuges, literal and emotional. They love each other fiercely and respectfully.

Right now, we're living in a country that is almost the antithesis of these ideas, for far too many of us. People are being manipulated by their fears, which are stoked by unscrupulous, lying shitbag politicians whose all too real evil would never make it past the pitch if you were going to try to sell it as a TV show or movie. They're consciously turning us on each other with lies about our common humanity, about the state of our country, about who and what's responsible for many of its faults, sewing suspicion and hate. And though the Yooperverse started as my personal comfort fic, I'm trying in my very small way to counteract what's happening in the world right now.

I've always believed in the power of story to change people's minds and lives, and I've experienced it myself. When I talk about story, I don't just mean fiction, though. I mean the narratives we tell ourselves and others about our own lives as a whole and day by day or moment by moment. I mean the stories we tell about each other when we're together, at the bar, at wakes, at a party. I mean the stories we invest in as fans in whatever kind of media we consume. I mean the stories we spin for ourselves and others to explain what the everloving fuck is wrong with the world.

Stories aren't separate from the world, they are the world. They tell it into being. They give it shape and purpose and meaning and a sense of possibility. Whatever stories we tell ourselves or each other about how things should be or how we should act as human beings (also called our "beliefs" or "morals" or "ethics"), they shape us, and we shape society. We are society, both together and as individuals. One person with a big voice and a story can tip a mass of people into either violence or solidarity.

I have no illusions that the Yooperverse will ever have that kind of power. It has a tiny audience on AO3 and Discord and it's mostly written for me to explore the things I feel deeply about, and wish I could do, and to teach myself to be a better person and live up to my own ideals. It's a world I'd like to manifest, to call into being, even in a small way. Even if it's just a story.

Really inspired by things like Souls-games right now (Dark Souls, Elden Ring) and fantasy like DnD, Baldur’s Gate, The Elder Scrolls/Skyrim, Lord of the Rings/Tolkeinn, Game of Thrones/George Martin, etc - you get the vibes. Worlds full of different creatures, monsters, magic, dungeons, gods, ghosts, curses, different kinds of kingdoms, etc. I’m quite leaning to something more in the line of Elden Ring/dark fantasy in particular, with a lot feuds, fighting, wars, factions, magic, etc. I’d love to do an ocxoc rp in such a setting. I’m open to any pairing + trans/nb characters. Bring me your rogues, your Chosen One, your mages, your elves, monsters, demigods, corrupt characters or good knights, healers, old warriors, legends, disgraced characters, fallen from grace characters, etc. The more unique the better! I write on discord, advanced literate/novella style (1000-2000 words typically per reply) and of course not every reply has to be super long and I’m open to doing shorter style side threads if we need a break, but I tend to lose interest in really short replies. Open to smut - most of my characters are switches and I prefer to see what feels natural for our characters and don’t rush smut. Open to fading to black and also doing purely platonic dynamics. i'm a 22enby fella who's got an itch for something dark and whump-y! i write in third person, present or past tense, semi to advanced 'lazy lit' over discord! i use servers to keep things organized, and i love chatting ooc with my writing partners :} i love ovsessing over our characters, sending memes/tiktoks, sharing music, etc etc, and i'd love a partner who's the same way! i consider myself pretty active, but i do work most of the week- if i can't get a reply to you, i'll at least be active ooc. i can promise at least one reply per day (usually a lot more, but i don't wanna get anyone's hopes too high, bc again..work).

alrighty! spooky season has begun as far as i care, and i'm itching to torment a new character. i want this to be my character's traumatic lore, lol. being me your worst dudes! serial killers, monsters, the worst you've got. i just want an excuse for my character to get smacked around. bring on the torture! psychological, physical, whatever! maybe my character somehow wronged yours, and yours is getting revenge in an extreme way. maybe my character was just in the wrong place at ghe wrong time. whatever the reason is, i want yours to be horrible to my fella >:) noncon, torture, blackmail- the list goes on! i'd love to include a healing journey later on down the line after all trauma (with a new character of yours against my freshly traumatized fella).

i'm open to most genres and settings, but right now, something horror themed, set in the 90s or early 2000s, would be fun! i also don't have many hard limits, but we can talk :}

Shyna’s Summer Commissions

When I was planning this, it was supposed to be spring commissions, looks like procrastination has kept me busy af xD /hj /lh

Anyway, so, as much as I don’t want to admit it, here’s what’s happening: I have an educational loan to pay; two in fact, and while my father and I have been paying them diligently, he’s just turned 64... and I want him to not work anymore, and enjoy his retirement, y’know? The problem: my IT job does not pay enough per month and we’re currently on talks on reworking the appraisal (as I received minimal increment this year). So, this is something I want to do to help alleviate financially.

I know I can’t work on a lot with a ton of WIPs that I have, so I will have 10 openings for now so that I don’t overwork myself, and I will keep doing so throughout this summer, which means this will get over by 31st August, 2023. I also have a goal on Ko-Fi incase you want to donate to that as well. In case you can’t pay, but still want to spread the word by reblogging, you are more than welcome to do so <3

Really inspired by things like Souls-games right now (Dark Souls, Elden Ring) and fantasy like DnD, Baldur’s Gate, The Elder Scrolls/Skyrim, Lord of the Rings/Tolkeinn, Game of Thrones/George Martin, etc - you get the vibes. Worlds full of different creatures, monsters, magic, dungeons, gods, ghosts, curses, different kinds of kingdoms, etc. I’m quite leaning to something more in the line of Elden Ring/dark fantasy in particular, with a lot feuds, fighting, wars, factions, magic, etc. I’d love to do an ocxoc rp in such a setting. I’m open to any pairing + trans/nb characters. Bring me your rogues, your Chosen One, your mages, your elves, monsters, demigods, corrupt characters or good knights, healers, old warriors, legends, disgraced characters, fallen from grace characters, etc. The more unique the better! Open to non-human/not entirely human characters as well. Give me 8 feet tall people, people with 4 arms, eldritch abominations, animalistic creatures, etc!! Go wild! I’m definitely open to multi muse for this and fleshing out the world, but to give us a base, we could start with two setting out on an adventure together or stumbling upon one another and travelling together, something like that? Bring some ideas my way and we can brainstorm together!

I have very few limits and am open to dark, heavy topics, violence, gore, etc. I won’t rp underage content or rp out SA scenes though - mentions in backstory are fine, I just don’t want to write it. Would love some dark stuff at some points but we can figure that out together and all limits will be respected! I write on discord, advanced literate/novella style (1000-2000 words typically per reply) and of course not every reply has to be super long and I’m open to doing shorter style side threads if we need a break, but I tend to lose interest in really short replies. Open to smut - most of my characters are switches and I prefer to see what feels natural for our characters and don’t rush smut. Open to fading to black and also doing purely platonic dynamics. Open to all pairings - most of my characters tend to be cis amab or nb amab (I do also play trasnmascs, transfems and cis afabs though lol). I love queer dynamics so bring them all my way!! Unconventional dynamics too are awesome!! I love complex, nuanced characters and nuanced, realistic relationships too!! I wrote a 3300 word essay on what flowers represent for each victor of the life series. I sent it To my discord buddies because they like to enable me infodumping and ranting. Found out that discord has a character limit that caps out at 2000 words, and had to cut it up into two pieces.

Wrote a long ass message in Discord and hit the character limit talking about Weezer and figured I may as well put it here too in case anyone wanted to read it, anyway: My personal Weezer essentials, Blue and Pinkerton are the obvious mandatory introductory listens, aside from those, all the color albums (blue, green, red, white, black, teal kind of but not really) are a must-listen as well. Even Black, although it's widely considered the weakest one, it'll give you a better idea of what type of Weezer music you like or dislike. Teal you can take or leave, it's just covers. White is probably my favorite of all the color albums, if you had to pick just one (other than Blue) then pick White.

Make Believe is one people consider really mediocre but I think it's a hidden gem, simple but sweet! If you listened to the radio in the early 2000s, you've probably heard the track Beverly Hills, which is from this album. Beverly Hills isn't super indicative of the rest of the album, so I recommend giving Make Believe a chance even if you don't like that song.

Raditude is probably their most widely hated album and I love it on its own but also out of sheer spite. It's relatively inoffensive, has a few catchy tunes, and also a few finished versions of Rivers Cuomo's Alone demos (Which I also recommend).

Hurley is a bit of a hidden gem too, a lot of people dismiss it because it is honestly kind of odd, seeing as the cover is an extreme closeup of Jorge Garcia's face and the album is named after his character on Lost. The album is super good if you can get past the weirdness, Also skip Where's My Sex, it's a joke song where the joke is he's singing about socks but he's replaced the word socks with sex. Bad song. Only listen to it if you wanna cringe.

Everything Will Be Alright In The End (EWBAITE for short) is just good. Full stop lol.

Pacific Daydream is a favorite of mine. But it's also pretty polarizing, people love it or hate it, no in between. If you like Black Album or think Black Album is just ok you will probably like PD but if you don't like Black at all you probably won't like PD either.

OK Human is a bit different seeing as it's almost entirely orchestral but all around super good!

Van Weezer is supposed to be an 80s throwback but honestly if you didn't tell me I'd think it was just Weezer being Weezer. Good album, but it mostly just sounds like normal rock music, not very unique but good at what it does. Aside from the song Blue Dream, which is a butchered version of a fan favorite demo (ballad of the briny) where they inserted the riff of crazy train into it for no reason, it's solid!

SZNZ is… So good. When it started with SZNZ: Spring I thought it was pretty good, and was excited to see what direction the rest of the albums would go in. Each album after that, I've liked progressively more, with SZNZ: Autumn being my absolute favorite. I'm really hoping I'll like SZNZ: Winter just as much if not more than Autumn! TLDR: Blue and Pinkerton are essentials, other highlights are the color albums (White especially), Make Believe, Raditude, Hurley, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, Pacific Daydream, OK Human, Van Weezer, and SZNZ: Autumn

Regarding the changes in the RP community. I'm around your age, but only got into RP in my early 20s, so I don’t have any experience with the old community you're missing. But is it possible that the rise of Discord and app-based instant messaging burned a lot of people out on rapidfire text-style RP? Social media is inescapable now, so maybe the RP scene evolved into favouring slower novella length exchanges to escape from that sense of instant demand.

Also, fandom tastes change. I remember MST3K-style parody fics being popular in the 2000s, and "what would Sherlock's twitter feed look like" fics being a cornerstone of the early 2010s. I rly would not be surprised if the 2020s attention economy has pushed people into conserving their time and curating more "high quality" roleplays, where detail and thought are favoured over the "glomps u" style of the 2010s. Not saying the second type can't be fun, but the first might be more appealing these days for the reasons I outlined in the first paragraph.

Hmmm that makes sense. With how fast everything Goes now, a lot of people are burnt on that instant gratification type of thing, at least I irt writing.

Another similar thing I saw pointed out is character limits. Back in the day most places people rped had pretty short character limits, and breaking your reply into multiple responses is always a little frustrating. But now even places with a character length have a pretty hefty one.

3/10/24 "Pulse" JPT3391

I have written my PULSE blog post FOUR TIMES ALREADY! Each time, my computer and tumblr has somehow ERASED my writing, although I've been repeatedly saving it as a draft, and instead it just replaces it with my movie notes! I am at my limit. I have written such a good blog post three times for it to get removed each time. I'm going to try once more for the last time, but If the pulse ghosts take me I won't guarantee this'll stay in writing.

Man, this movie was everywhere. I really enjoyed the message that it was attempting to put out, and although I think Pulse (JP) has a better execution than its American counterpart, I still feel like the film was really really lacking in quite a few places. The pacing, clash between realism and horror, as well as the execution of horror elements in the movie were slightly jarring and broke my suspension of disbelief a few times. But what would I be doing on this blog if not talking about the greater societal context of this movie?

Pulse generally feels like a warning about the internet, rather than a critique. I know this movie came out around 2000, which most in the developed world consider the 'dawn of the internet'. This was when the internet was a "place", rather than a formless entity that existed metaphysically and stayed with you always, like twitter, twitch, instagram, and discord for the IPhone that's perpetually in your pocket and an extension of you. A lot of the people who were negatively affected by the pulse ghosts were people who carried average, everyday lives and varied from technologically savvy to absolute newbie. I think that this served as a statement that anybody could really be negatively affected by more literally, internet usage, and more metaphorically, craving attention and love.

Basically, the internet is a new mode of communication. The main character at the beginning of the film was cited as saying "You're looking for a friend?" Which implies that at the time, the greater Japanese public wasn't utilizing or viewing the internet for technological or business purposes, but rather for connection. This makes the pulse ghosts all the more scarier because this implies that either they themselves are husks of their former person, wandering around aimlessly for social approval, or attempting to take advantage of those who are simply seeking friendship. That I think is a really good metaphor for today's social climate, especially when you take a look at scammers, influencers, and generally troublesome online behavior.

Genuine question for tumblr rpers, what is the aversion to discord as an rp platform when most tumblr rpers wind up needing to use discord anyway as a form of communication? Isn't it just easier to consolidate all your rping to just one platform or do you like to separate it?
