“Those are pins,” Steve realized. He looked over at Hill. “The mask—it’s nailed to his face.”

Hill’s face was as unmoved as ever. “Like I said. They really didn’t want it coming off.”

So there’s a new Twin Peaks... thing...? out? I guess? And I have never seen Twin Peaks (but am fairly well spoiled for whodunnit and so on) and have pretty firmly decided that, NOPE, NOT FOR ME, TOO CREEPY AND AWFUL.

...So tonight I was like “hey, I want to watch some TV and obviously Twin Peaks is not even in the running, but what should I watch? Leverage? Sense8?”

And then Netflix recommended me The Keepers. About the unsolved murder of a nun, and how her murder connected to the horrific sexual abuse of teen girls in the school where she taught because THAT IS MUCH LESS CREEPY AND AWFUL AND HORRIFYING THAN TWIN PEAKS? OR. THE OPPOSITE OF THAT. SO OBVIOUSLY I WATCHED THAT.

(I mean, the series seems amazingly well done and I’m sure I’m going to watch the rest of it, just, you know, this is EXACTLY LIKE that time I decided not to read the second and third books of the Hunger Games trilogy because they were too grim and depressing and instead I went and read a book about the Donner party. GUESS WHAT, GRIM AND DEPRESSING AND THE ADDED HORROR OF ACTUALLY BEING TRUE.)

It IS Stuck on the Puzzle, and I will be honest: I have NO IDEA why I marked this for later--I mean, THOSE TAGS ARE WHY but idk how I ran across it? I AM NOT IN THIS FANDOM??? I think I saw fanart maybe??

ANYWAY I AM TEN CHAPTERS IN AND IT IS GREAT AND I’M JUST ROLLING WITH NOT ENTIRELY UNDERSTANDING ANYONE’S SAD BACKSTORY.

(Which reminds me that I become aware sometimes of how this is actually a very special reading skill--reading fic not in your fandom, where you know people/events/relationships are being alluded to that you’re supposed to understand, and that are probably really important, and so you kind of start to extrapolate backward to what canon must look like and/or are able to suspend all of those things in your mind, accept it as part of the setting, and keep going. It turns out other people who do not read fanfic are not always good at this.)

Also ughhhhh Bull is the best. I am still pretty sure I’m as likely to take up a Bioware game as roller derby but I am 100% romancing The Iron Bull if that ever happens.

how is it routed through your phone? an app? maybe there's a browser version?

No, it’s just a thing where... I gave them my phone number (eventually, when I had been living here for a couple of months and finally asked them why it was impossible for anyone to buzz me and they said they needed a phone to run it through) and now my phone rings when someone buzzes my apartment. (There’s still no way for me to actually buzz them in? IDK if that’s because it’s a cell phone or if I just don’t know the secret trick or what. I have seen other people get buzzed in--the building manager can definitely do it--but I don’t know how and, uh, obviously have never gotten my shit together enough to ask.) 

So I think if I forward my cell number to Google Voice or Skype I should be able to get those calls that way. Presumably.

I could also like, lie face down on the floor for the next twenty-four hours instead of figuring out how to set up Skype to do phone calls, and just hope that somebody lets the delivery person into the building to knock on my actual door. That is also a strategy.

Oh shit if you get into Dragon Age I dunno if my heart can take it. I'm in Dragon Age hell right now.

My ability to actually play video games tops out at... Tetris, or I guess like... Candy Crush? Two Dots? Avengers Academy? And I’ve lurked/read in a lot of fandoms where I didn’t feel capable of writing due to a shaky grasp of canon; I don’t think I’d attempt to write anything without having played the game, and I am about as likely to play an entire Bioware game as I am to take up roller derby.

I have the asset’s brain in a plastic bag

...So, backing up slightly: a year and a half ago, in a fit of fannish enthusiasm and reckless disregard for omens and portents, I named my shiny new silver laptop (with red star affixed first thing) The Asset. 

The Asset took a tumble at... some... point... (if anybody from Dell Customer Service asks you, a few days ago. Three hundred could be a few, right?) and seemed TOTALLY FINE apart from the end of the power cord being bent and a little piece of silver casing under the ethernet port being cracked and the occasional ominous cracking noise from the vicinity of the left hinge, but whatever, everything was FINE.

...Everything, as you might have guessed, is no longer fine. The damaged hinge finally cracked through last week, opening up a split at the seam of the screen casing, and since Past Me was clever and got a warranty that runs out to 2019, this is totally free to fix, give or take the hassle of being without my computer for several days while I ship it back for repairs. (Apparently replacing more or less every external part is not something they like to do in the field, who knew?)

Scarcely had I started to contemplate what do about several browsers’ worth of Problematic Browser History when the Dell Customer Service Representative informed me that I should really just extract the hard drive and keep it until they sent the rest of my computer back. So today I extracted the hard drive, packed up the mindless shell of the Asset (totally dislocating the broken hinge in the process), and arranged for pickup. 

So for the next week or so, I will be keeping The Asset’s brain in a Ziploc bag so it doesn’t get dusty before I can put it back where it belongs, while trusty backup Sophie fills in on porn-writing and Tumblr-browsing duty. (I just gotta get her a copy of XKit first.)

Today is definitely not the broken dick epic’s birthday...

For a few reasons, one being that it is not born yet. But September 4 and/or 8 are the date of the start of the, er, gestation process, which began TWO YEARS (and 1-5 days) ago IN 2014. o.O 

(Main writing on Missing Persons, which clocked in a hair under 250,000 words, took me roughly from August 2005-March 2008, which means that I finished it in slightly less time than the master’s degree I was working on at the same time. So I’ve got... another seven months before broken dick epic breaks any personal records, I guess?)

Bucky’s broken dick epic (aka the WIP codenamed Aluminum Bastard): 41 Chapters / 155,153 words

Act III so far, spanning fffive? days of internal time: 8 Chapters / 31,653 words

Stuff remaining to write in Act III: Maybe.... four more chapters? I’ve been revising my thoughts on where this Act ends and the next one starts.

Broken dick status: Agonizingly almost fixed but still not.

Acts left to write after this one: IV, and V. Which means we’re actually turning the corner into things... getting... better? Which is baffling, after over 22 months of writing everything being awful. I am consoling myself with some last-ditch awfulness before we turn the corner, but that corner is getting awfully close now.

Target posting date: IDK, probably before Infinity War? Right?
