Diplomoceras

Please look at this bloody stupid ammonite
Tumblr media
It is Diplomoceras cylindraceum and I just saw it on Prehistoric Planet 2.
Please note that its shell, if straightened out, would be 2.5 metres long and it only used a metre of that for living in. It used to live all over the world and offer mosasaurs help with their Word documents.

Diplomoceras sp., as seen in Prehistoric Planet 2. This was a lot of fun to draw, can’t say the same for researching it though.

Convergent evolution is the evolution of 'analogous' or similar structures in organisms that are not closely related. Such as the wings of insects, birds and bats. One potential example of this is the Diplomoceras maximum, an extinct squid-like creature who is clearly analogous to, or a distant cousin of Clippy the paperclip. This amazing creature lived 68 million years ago, with the most notable fossil found at the cephalopod rich López de Bertodano Formation of Seymour Island, Antarctica. An area that was formerly warmer before further movement of tectonic plates. The fossil shell measured an impressive 1.5 metres and is formed from ridges, speculated to grow a section annually. These ribs are thought be similar to tree rings, being used for dating samples and gaining insight about the environment of the prehistoric sea, such as measuring the carbon and oxygen isotopes in the shell. Note
do you uh. what is your favourite squid/other cephalopod ? : )
you simply cannot ask me to pick just one. ill die
i really like grimalditeuthis bonplandi !! which is where my url comes from :⟩ they have a modified tentacle club in the shape of a smaller squid that they use as a hunting lure which is pretty sick
also a big fan of strawberry squid (adorable + weird as fuck eyes), flamboyant cuttlefish (teeny tiny and walk on little peets), kisslip cuttlefish (gorgous), coconut octopus (uses the shells as houses !!) and deeply enjoy heteromorph ammonites like diplomoceras. also plectronoceras the original cephalopod/a teeny tiny wizard
i dont have a singular favourite but there are also many more than these that i hold dear. this is just off the top of my head
