The glitz and glamour of the Met Gala often overshadow the grim realities of the world outside its walls. However, this year, as the fashion elite graced the green and white carpet, the backdrop was marred by protests and a rising digital movement known as #Blockout2024. What sparked this movement, and why are celebrities finding themselves under scrutiny for their silence on the Gaza conflict? Amidst Silence on Gaza Conflict The Origins of #Blockout2024: As the Israel-Hamas conflict continued to escalate, the silence of some A-list celebrities drew criticism from online activists. Led by TikTok user @ladyfromtheoutside, the #Blockout2024 movement gained momentum, urging followers to hold celebrities accountable for their lack of action or vocal support for Palestine. Understanding the Movement: #Blockout2024 operates on a simple premise: if a celebrity fails to speak out against the devastation in Gaza, they should be blocked on social media platforms. This digital guillotine, as termed by its proponents, aims to reclaim the power of social influence and redirect attention toward those actively addressing humanitarian crises. The Role of Social Media: TikTok and Instagram became battlegrounds for the #Blockout2024 movement, with dedicated accounts listing celebrities deemed complicit in their silence. From Taylor Swift to Kim Kardashian, no A-lister was immune from scrutiny, leading to heated debates over their moral responsibility and the effectiveness of symbolic gestures. Celebrities in the Crosshairs: The Blockout List featured household names like Beyoncé and Selena Gomez, whose silence on the Gaza conflict drew ire from supporters of the movement. Additionally, attendees of the Met Gala faced criticism for their perceived tone-deafness, sparking discussions on the impact of celebrity activism. Navigating the Gray Areas: As the movement gained traction, questions arose about the criteria for inclusion on the Blockout List. Did wearing a pro-ceasefire button to the Oscars absolve artists like Billie Eilish of accountability? How should statements like "Free Palestine" from celebrities like Kim Kardashian be interpreted amidst conflicting sentiments? The Power of Consumer Influence: At its core, #Blockout2024 underscores the influence consumers wield in shaping celebrity discourse. By leveraging social media platforms to amplify their voices, activists seek to hold public figures accountable for their actions and compel meaningful engagement with pressing global issues.

On 2014, I joined a bachelor program. From that moment on, I began working on assignments frequently using paper. It's different from when I was in high school where I only wrote in the assignment book directly. The types of tasks carried out are almost all papers that must be printed to be collected to my lecturers. Each task consists of 10-15 pages. In one semester I got assignments of around 8-10 papers. Which means I printed around 150 sheets for only one semester. This happened in the first 2 years of my college so that I had used around 900 pieces of paper at that time.
Read more here about a reflection on the use of paper and digital technology in university.

Movement and Motion
Day 43 (11-10-17)
Today, I was quite disappointed because Sangeeta hadn’t seen us regarding our Project. In all honesty, I think the lecturers are kind of slacking off, in terms of providing feedback or advice. Nevertheless, we got straight to work. The walls from yesterday were already set and like we had panned, I moved one of the big TV screens in the closed space. However, Matt suggested that having it outside (in front of) the walls would be better because the participants could move around inside the space. I didn’t mind trying this idea, so after doing this, I asked a few people to test. [1]

Tumblr media
Matt was back to interviewing people, and asked them the same questions as yesterday so that it would be considered a fair test. And like yesterday, the sounds were the same (Simon didn’t get much time to change / iterate), however, I gave the new visuals code to Kelvin to add to the Kinect and sound codes. I believe that it wasn’t the best visuals and I definitely could have done a better job, however, I didn’t get much time last night so I just changed a couple of things and added a few features to a previous code that I had already written.
The overall testing was okay because only three people tried out this iteration. And since I was on recording duty again, I had a chance to see their facial expressions. Yesterday, I noticed the change in people’s emotions / reactions to the visuals and sounds as they had been introduced to this idea for the first time with very little information about it. Here are some of the changes in the participant’s facial features from yesterday and today, and my observations…
Tumblr media
James: started feeling quite happy and enthusiastic to see what our experience is about. In the end, he still seemed quite happy, but maybe confused as to know what the point of our Project was.
Tumblr media
Michael: started off quite confused and not knowing what he was “supposed” to do. He also acted a bit awkward. At times, he was surprised by the sounds generated and ended the experience feeling almost the same as the start.
Tumblr media
Aimata: started feeling a bit curious as to what the visuals and sound actually did. She seemed happy throughout her experience time.
Tumblr media
Bligh: started feeling a bit nervous as he didn’t know what he was doing. He seemed a bit happy and focused at times by the visuals and sound generated.
Tumblr media
Tim (left) and Kale (right): both seem to have the same facial expressions at the start and the end of their experience. But they did seem surprised / curious as to what they could do with their physical movement.
Tumblr media
Eden: seemed happy and surprised by the visuals. She also had similar feelings when she started and ended her experience.
Tumblr media
Talia: started off confused but I could see the change in her emotions quite instantly as she was very happy to understand how her hand movements were changing the visuals. She was also one of the most enthusiastic participants and curious to find out the purpose of our project.
Tumblr media
Matthew: seemed a bit focused at the start as he was figuring our how to control the visuals on the screen and the sound. He felt quite happy later on.
Tumblr media
Carol: felt confused (and shy) at the start as she didn’t know what she was doing. I don’t think she found the experience quite satisfying as she seemed confused and unenthused by the end.
Tumblr media
Rachel: same as others, started off feeling confused not knowing what she was meant to do. She spent time figuring out what the sound and visuals did and was happy by the end.
I was firstly surprised to see confusion on the participant’s faces because, although they didn’t know much about the Project, it seemed quite straightforward that the idea was to physically move in order to digitally move the visuals. However, I guess that not knowing how the visuals and sound were being produced and what they meant could be confusing. And I think due to this, people didn’t spend too much time on the experience. The average time spend by our participants was about 1-1.5 minutes, which can be improved as we iterate our idea.
I also noticed people started getting happier by the end of their experience. I think this could mainly be due to them knowing what they can actually do with the sounds and visual elements by then. For some people, their facial expressions didn’t change much overtime but they could be feeling something else internally, which I couldn't have known.
Personally, I wanted to see surprise on people’s faces, because I feel like that’s when we’ve really achieved our mission of evoking emotions. I just really like when people make a “surprised face” because it just gives me sense of success. For me, the surprised face means that we’ve taught someone something new or we’ve impressed someone with our talent or skill. I feel this way because many times, the emotion of surprise evoked in me by watching and listening to a famous singer sing on stage, which in my opinion means that I’m influenced by their voice, it has touched me emotionally and that’s the purpose of a song or an artist. Also, many times, I’ve been surprised when I’ve learned something new, even if it is from a friend / classmate, but that means that their aim of telling me something I didn’t know previously has been accomplished. So, this is why I mainly wanted to surprise the people / audience because, in a way, we’re teaching them about movement in the physical world causing movement digitally.
“There is nothing more exhilarating than to find out something for the first time – something that may have existed for over a billion years, but was never known before.” ~ Margaret Robinson [2]
To me, this quote supports my point of view because it states that finding something new, that we didn’t have prior knowledge or experience of, is a great feeling. And this is what we want our audience to feel - like we’ve encountered them with something they haven’t tried before.
While we were prototyping, Shades had gone to Queen Street and K Road to look for the dome and clothing racks. We hadn’t found one in the right size in either materials yet so the search was still on. She did come back with a few more options, but I feel like we now need to just start constructing, somehow.
Tumblr media
After Shades returned, she tested the dome she had bought yesterday. It didn’t work well, in my opinion, because the sound was too quiet. However she said that it could be due to the small amp, and the sound may work better with a bigger amp. But still, I didn’t think that the bowl was big enough, and we need quite a large dome for the sound to have an effect on the participant. But, for the time being, this is our best option - and good news is that it passes the test for “being light enough to be hung from the ceiling.”
Tumblr media
Simon had also brought in his “Excellent Garment Rack” (😂) that he had at home, so we could test it for the screen. Although the size was too small, it was still useful to look at because we could do a test on it to ensure that it works well with how we want to project the visuals on the screen. But, we’re still on a lookout for the clothing rack - Shades said that the “Industrial Garment Rack” she looked at yesterday seems like the best option.
Overall, I feel like our progress could have been much better today, however, we finished a part of the prototyping. Shades said that she would also talk about the change in facial expression and emotions of the participants, in her Blog post. Now, I think that we should start looking into the final ideas for the sounds and visuals, after iterating and exploring options of course. I want us to have the final version of these aspects finished in hopefully 2 weeks so we have extra time to make changes to the code if needed or adjustments to the overall presentation.
Tomorrow is Thursday, and like every Thursday for the past four weeks, I don’t want the curse to occur. What normally happens is that we go downhill by the end of every week and since the time is crucial at the moment, I want our energy levels to stay high and work as hard as we have been. The weeks are slowly decreasing and we still have a heap of things to accomplish, so I want us to complete everything we can in the designated time, mainly because I don’t want to get stressed and cry at the last minute (which I know will end up happening anyway). Since Sangeeta didn’t manage to see us today, I think we need to talk to James tomorrow and ask for advice on our progress, as well as ideas for the Booth.
