Digitised Archival Sources on India and South Asia
The days when only members of the upper class of urban society had access to knowledge-producing sites (mostly archives) are long gone. Today, one may easily access digitised archival sources thanks to the internet on mobile phones. The growth of digital technology has also enabled a new arena of history-keeping. Publicly-owned digitised archival sources have gained popularity in recent years as…

the people who made (and people who update) the disturbing movie iceberg should be flogged for successfully getting a significant number of people to catalogue actual Films like Martyrs (2008) as the same thing as ogrish live death footage mixtapes. technically the race to the bottom to see the most horrible thing that could happen to someone on film has always existed in some form or other, but the cottage industry propped up around digitalized death is something that a lot of viewers dont even understand theyre participating in. the guys who frankenstein together death mixtapes sell them for real money, youtubers react to them or talk about them for millions of views and ad revenue, and regular people are primed by this whole transaction to view media like this as an endurance test instead of the suffering of real people being monetized. It's not really a coincidence that a lot of the clips are seemingly sourced from the global south either. victims of freak accidents or violent crimes are rarely granted privacy or reprieve, but I imagine that the outrage would at least be greater if most of the content of these videos were sourced from Your Town, USA or whatever instead of latin america or SE asia. there's a grotesque chauvinism to what is already a very demoralizing phenomena of gazing slack-jawed from your computer at death tailored for mass consumption. It makes the glib narration in Faces of Death (1978) seem poignant.
for years people asked "Does snuff exist?" and the answer was usually "probably", but now it doesn't really matter anymore. The guy making a profit from supplying Cute Dead Girls Volume 14 on private telegram chats is providing the same seedy market component that made people curious about the existence of snuff, but the public's response is "you got anything else I'm so boreeed".

Henry Harrison Getty commissioned this tomb for his late wife, Carrie Eliza Anderson Getty, in 1890. He engaged the firm of Adler and Sullivan for its design, admiring both Louis Sullivan's local buildings and his design for the tomb of Martin Ryerson, Getty's partner, of 1889. One source indicates that Getty was also on the board of the Adler & Sullivan-designed Auditorium Building. Both the Getty and Ryerson tombs, as well as Sullivan's grave, are located in Graceland Cemetery, Chicago.
The structure faces east on a small triangle of land bounded by cemetery roads. It is the only structure on a plot, located in the northwest part of the cemetery.
The Getty tomb is only of only three mausoleums designed by Sullivan between 1889 and 1892, the third being the Wainwright tomb in Bellefontaine Cemetery, St. Louis.
From the HABS report:
The construction is of blocks of grey Bedford limestone, with bronze gates and inner door. The rectangular block of the monument rests on a stylobate of four single stones, and the lower half of the wall is of smooth ashlar masonry. The upper half of the wall has an over-all incised pattern of octagonal panels enclosing eight-pointed stars, and above this is an enriched cornice with three scallops constituting the roof. On the front and two sides are large arches springing from the ashlar base to cover the door and the side lunettes.
A further description:
The quiet elegance of this tomb celebrates life amidst the cemetery's somber environment of death. An architectural writer once described it as being "as near perfection as mortals are allowed to approach." Its beauty is achieved through a combination of simple geometric shapes and rich delicately proportioned ornamentation.
Yale University Library, Digital Collections
Architect Frank Lloyd Wright remarked of the structure that it was "entirely Sullivan's own, a piece of sculpture, a statue, a great poem addressed to human sensibilities as such. Outside the realm of music, what finer requiem?"
Notes the HABS report:
The design for the Getty Tomb received much praise from abroad. In 1900, at a time when Sullivan's commissions were very few, a plaster cast of the tomb doorway was being shown at the Paris Exposition.
There is a poem by Marge Piercy, visiting a dead man on a summer day, about Sullivan and his Getty tomb.
Frank Stella's work entitled Getty Tomb is a comment on the immense darkness and sorrow of death.

I have yet to discover a photograph of Carrie Eliza Anderson Getty.
Alice Eliza Getty, about whom the most information is available, seems to have lived a rather fascinating life. She was a musician, composer, author, and art historian. She was the daughter of Henry H. Getty [1], a rich businessman who made his money in lumber. After the death of Alice's mother Carrie Eliza [2] in 1890, her father Henry retired from business and traveled widely in Europe and Asia with his daughter, along the way establishing an Asian art collection. He and Alice lived in Paris, Henry dying there in 1919. Alice continued to live in Paris until 1939, and spent her last five years in New York. Illustrations in her book The Gods of Northern Buddhism (published 1914 and 1928) came from the collection of her father. At some point, she lived in a Buddhist monastery in Japan. Alice is one of the pioneers of the Western study of South Asian art. [3]

The tomb's ornamental cast bronze gates and inner door were executed by the Yale and Towne Mfg. Company. The bronze door reportedly took an artisan and assistant a year to create and weighs 1,100 pounds. Plaster casts were made of the inner door, and exhibited in Paris at the Exposition Universelle of 1900 (winning Sullivan an award), and at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Clubs: Chicago, Union League. Office: 204 Dearborn St."
HABS No. ILL-1045, Getty Tomb
[2] Carrie Eliza Anderson was born in Skein, Skien kommune, Telemark fylke, Norway in 1843, and was living in Muskegon, Michigan by the time she was 18. Her husband was Henry Harrison Getty, born in Batavia, New York. They were married in Muskegon, Michigan on November 9, 1864. She died February 24, 1890 (aged 46–47), in Cook County, Illinois.

[3] ...Alice Getty, an only child, was born in Muskegon, Michigan, near the miles of pine-forests owned by her "lumberman" father. The family travelled extensively.... Her father...announced his intention of retiring when he was fifty in order to travel and to collect Far Eastern art....At that time [1890] Miss Getty's mother had died, and she became her father's companion in his collection-travels in Europe and Asia. The Gettys, with the ever-increasing collection, eventually settled in Paris. The largest and most important part of the collection consisted of images of deities of the Hindu Buddhist Pantheon, but Mr. Getty did not limit his field. His beautiful musical instruments were presented to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York by his daughter; she also gave his collection of Persian shawls and a fine stone Maitreya to the Art Institute in Chicago. Miss Getty's extensive acquaintance with the scholars who were later to become her friends and colleagues now began. Among her most intimate friends later on were the great Sanskritist, the late Mr. Sylvain Levi, the late Mr. Joseph Hackin of the Musee Guimet, and the late M. Paul Pelliot. European scholars recognised her abilities immediately. But until about 1907, her own great interest had always been music. She wanted to compose and for some years she studied harmony and composition with Vincent D'Indy. She wrote the music for various French poems and several of these songs had been successfully published, when her father's suggestion that she write a catalogue of his collection of Buddhist deities, changed her entire life. She put the songs aside, temporarily, as she thought, but research in Asiatic art claimed her thereafter, and she never returned to music again. She must have been naturally a scholar. The catalogue was undertaken in the most professional manner. She worked with deliberation and with meticulous care. At that time there was a dearth of material on Buddhist iconography; and during the six unhurried years when Miss Getty was working on the catalogue, she and her father made three journeys to India and the Far East. In I914, the Oxford Clarendon Press published "The Gods of Northern Buddhism", which at once took the place which it still holds as the authoritative book on the subject. During the first World War Miss Getty gave all her time to working for the blinded soldiers. She had a Braille printing-press installed in her apartment and superintended the printing of many books. For her admirable work she was afterward decorated by the French government.

Where to start. Sweep of September air from the door. Blinking cursor. What are you taking this semester? he asks. Sustainable sourcing, fair trade, organic. Java, mocha. Enamel on wood panel, 12 x 12 inches. From Kenya and Sumatra. Welcome to Fox Point. Perhaps the coffee will be just as good as the last time. She looks down at the half-eaten miniature Boston cream donut on the fluted baking paper. French 2. What is Enlightenment. Digital Media in the Time of Ecological Crisis. Regular milk? Regular milk. And Bakhtin and the Political Present. Flyers litter the bulletin board. Where to start. There is a wide range of freshly roasted single origin beans. And the coffee is made in a wide variety of ways. And the interior is warm and eclectic. There is ample seating and there are large windows and there are rounded grooves in the scuffed wall paneling. There are racks of magazines, and frosted glass pendant lamps in yellow and blue. It’s a relaxing atmosphere. Hiss of the steamer. Paper cups with dimpled brown sleeves. Stretched burlap in the window. The steam rises steadily. Where to sit. Waste of time. Write what you know. Listen, the coffee is organic and it taste very good. It is pure and hot and strong. It can always stand alongside friendship. Song from the sixties: refrain, elegy, churchyard, string quartet. Panned hard left and right. Simple, separate people. He writes on Twitter: Does anyone else feel like a ghost? I have had the privilege of trying the finest cafés in Korea, Japan, and all around Asia, but I’d say Coffee Exchange would be the best as far as Lattes are concerned. And honestly this is one of my favorite coffee shops, due to the quality and the variety. Ideal for a date, perfect for studying or working, and superb for simply enjoying your cup of coffee. No one would be disappointed. The hardest part is getting to the starting point, he says. I finished training last week. My first day is Monday. It’s one block of Williams, on the south side. Four more streets below that, between Benefit and Governor—John, Arnold, Transit, and Sheldon. From John to Sheldon it’s Thayer, Brook, Hope, and East, and all those tiny streets in between, names I can’t remember. It might seem impossible to learn your route at first but the jump in your knowledge from the first time to the second will be dramatic. That’s what I’ve generally found to be true for people. Close the laptop. Sakura means cherry blossom, smile, open mouth. The summer was long. I was away for six weeks, she says. Six weeks? I would read in the mornings. I would write long letters. I would wander, disquieted, along the avenues, under the linden trees. 3 bedroom, 1 full bath apartment on the second floor of a mixed-use building on Wickenden Street. Large open kitchen with granite counter top, spacious bedrooms, modern full bath, central air and in-unit laundry. Unruhig. Restlessly? But I have been sleeping well. Or I’ve been sleeping late. As the days get shorter it becomes easier to fall in love with shadows. Stirring in raw sugar, one packet. Oh, such a good book, he says. What did you think? The main thing is that everything happens at the right time. And that is grace. That is providence. The twentieth remove: here was mercy on both hands. Here was the benevolence of friends. Do you see a thousand little Motes and Atomes wand’ring up and down in a Sun-beam? That is preservation, and that is government. And in these providence consists. Such a good book. And when you start reading it, you notice little things about the city. The book club meets once a month, depending on the book. Always in person. And you notice little things, like the way the white cross on the church aligns with the windowpane and is split by shadow as the sun dips below the buildings. A picture held us captive, and we could not get outside of it, for it lay in our language. Where to start. Cross the room and sit by the window. Wer jetzt kein Haus hat, baut sich keines mehr. Wer jetz allein ist, wird es lange bleiben. We are served our coffees, and the steam rises steadily.

Meet the other Otters!
Tumblr media
Cosmic Coconut is an enthusiastic tweenager who is ready for blast off, but hasn’t finished her training yet. Like many kids her age, Cosmic is overly-eager, and rarin’ to go, but not yet quite prepared. She’s an ordinary kid with an extraordinary dream. She aspires to be the greatest astronaut ever… to go where no otter has gone before… to find cool, new worlds that have water because otters love water. In fact, the words “otter” and “water” come from the same ancient word. Pretty cool, huh?
As a quick-witted junior astronaut with a take-charge attitude, Cosmic touts her own catchphrase, “Why not?” She believes anything is possible, especially with all latest breakthroughs in science because they seem like science fiction and she loves that! A fan of sci-fi comics, space movies, and music, Cosmic downloads her favorite media directly into the control panel on her space suit. She has all of DJ Tropicool’s hits on her playlist, and rocks to them on repeat.
The only thing Cosmic loves more than space is her friends. She looks up to DJ, who’s a few years older than her, and she loves Little Orphan Orange like a kid sister.
Tumblr media
DJ Tropicool is an animal on-stage. Literally! One of the top up-and-coming DJs on the scene, he’s a prodigy turntablist and MC with a baseline and light show that turns life into a dance party.
Smart, charming, and entrepreneurial, DJ’s success lies in his off the charts musical abilities and his amazing coding skills. He’s an artistic pioneer, a new breed of maestro known as a live-coder who writes code for AI that mixes music into irresistible new beats for a whole new generation. This is some next-level stuff!
This cool otter pup is a good, all-around, open-source kinda guy who gladly shares his coding and mixing skills with digital natives everywhere. He’s the new creative voice in digital dance music! Just ask Anita Fruit Punch. DJ Tropicool performs at all of her volleyball tournaments, and that gives her the upper edge.
Tumblr media
Major Mango heard the call of duty when she was still a pup and said, “Roger that!”
A strong female otter from the Chicago River, Major Mango has dedicated her life to helping otters in need. Respected for her tremendous bravery and her kind heart, she’s a Search and Rescue specialist – a First Responder who uses her precision parachuting skills to jump into the heart of danger and bring others to safety.
Born on the 4th of July, her favorite movies are any action flicks starring Kook and her favorite color is camouflage. She’s a lover of tradition and a modern woman rolled into one. With her high-level access to cool gadgets and a fleet of awesome high-tech vehicles, Major Mango is a kid-favorite. Partly because she’s a hero who teaches them cool secret codes, and partly because she’s a popular e-sports champ with her own gaming channel where she dominates the competition!
Tumblr media
Anita Fruit Punch is a pro beach volleyball champ who is known for her amazing speed, her invincible spikes, and her rousing catchphrase, “Anita fruit punch and I need it now!”
Upbeat and confident, Anita has tons of fans, both young and old, and she always takes the time to chat with them and sign ottergraphs after matches.
A fresh water otter who hails from the mangrove swamps of South East Asia, Anita is a firm believer in achievement through practice, good sportsmanship, and the unbelievably transformative power of scrunchies…. Which, according to Alexander the Grape, were first invented in 1987 by a woman who named the invention after her pet poodle.
When Anita’s not competing for accolades, she likes to chill on the beach where she surfs, and organizes beach clean-ups, because according to her, “Happiness comes in waves.”
(Again I apologize if these icons are huge)

Good Deficit, Bad deficit 🧐
While a current account surplus or deficit might seem positive or negative at first glance, the reality is more nuanced. The quality of the imbalance matters more.
A deficit funded by productive investments creates future benefits, while a surplus built on unused savings due to a lack of investment opportunities is a missed chance for growth. For example, India's deficit due to gold imports isn't helpful, and a surplus solely from remittances wouldn't be ideal either.
Looking at successful emerging economies, many with persistent deficits, we see a focus on exports. Oil-rich nations like Russia and Iran have surpluses, while export powerhouses like China and Korea are in a similar boat. Rising stars like Vietnam are also export-oriented. This suggests that building long-term export potential is crucial for India's economic health.
In the short term, India can manage moderate deficits by attracting foreign capital through a business-friendly environment.
Here's some positive news: India's service exports, particularly software, travel, and business services, are growing. Remittances from overseas Indians are also on the rise. This, combined with a surplus of $30.8 billion in the last quarter, paints a promising picture.
The takeaway? Don't get hung up on a surplus or deficit label. Focus on building a strong, export-oriented economy that can attract foreign investment when needed.
References:
1. Remittances are money transfers that migrants send to their families and friends in their home countries. They are an important source of income and foreign exchange for many developing countries, especially those in South Asia.
Remittances can help reduce poverty, improve living standards, support education and health care, and stimulate economic activity.
2. Balance of payments: The balance of payments Statistics in India is a systematic record of India's international economic transactions of residents with the rest of the world on account of merchandise, services, unrequited transfers and transfers of capital.
3. Various print and digital outlets and government websites.

11 June 2023: Crown Prince Hussein, the Regent,  checked on the progress of the Aqaba Development Corporation’s (ADC) projects and programmes.
Chairing a meeting at the company, he was briefed by CEO Hussein Safadi on the ADC’s new cargo lines launched this year, targeting the US market with a 17 per cent increase in exports.
Safadi said the company has prepared a risk assessment study of the ports and the industrial area in Aqaba’s south, noting that work is underway to establish the Aqaba Digital Hub to provide a digital infrastructure that is up to international standards. (Source: Petra)
He added that the hub would benefit from the submarine cable connecting Asia and Europe, highlighting plans to launch the Aqaba corridor for agricultural food technology, which would extend over an area of 7 dunums west of King Hussein International Airport, with the aim of unleashing the potential of sustainable agri-tech in Jordan and promoting investment in this field, to bolster food security and create green job opportunities.
Safadi continued that ADC has also prepared a vision for launching a media hub in Aqaba to provide audiovisual production facilities, a vocational training institute, and residential buildings, to meet local and international market needs.
Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority Chief Commissioner Nayef Al Fayez attended the meeting.

Solarpunk Writing Prompts #12
Here you can listen to original podcast
Here is the source of the podcast's transcript you can read below
Solarpunk Prompts - The Expedition
Hello world. I'm Tomasino.
This is Solarpunk Prompts, a series for writers where we discuss Solarpunk, a movement that imagines a world where technology is used for the good of the planet.
In this series we spend each episode exploring a single Solarpunk story prompt adding some commentary, some inspirations, and some considerations.
If this is your first time here, I'd recommend checking out our introduction episode first, where we talk about what Solarpunk is, why you should care, and why this series came into being.
Tonight our prompt is about the Global South on a mission North. It is called: "The Expedition"
A group of doctors and engineers from a Global South country are sent on a mission in the North, helping the specialists there live in the world after The Great Internet Collapse, where the AIs will no longer make suggestions and the Clouds can't calculate the load bearing strength of a pillar.
What is the Global South?
The concept of the Global South and Global North are not strictly geographical. Indeed, a large portion of the Global South is above the equator. Instead the terms refer to a grouping of countries along a socio-economic and political boundaries.
The Global South usually refers to Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The term came about as an alternative to "Third World" which doesn't devalue those it speaks of.
The Global North, then, usually refers to North America, Europe, Australia, and Russia. It's sometimes used in place of "developed countries".
Over the last 30 years the Global South has been on the rise politically, economically, and technologically. Some of that has been due to the migration of manufacturing and production, but there have also been major independent cultural shifts across the globe.
It's very difficult to make broad claims about the state of the Global South despite the term being designed to do just that. The digital divide is a key metric used to separate the two, yet internet use in Asia far exceeds many places in the Global North.
The term "Global South" itself had its origins in the late 60s in the context of Vietnam. "The dominance of the north over the Global South" was the phrase, referring to the long history of colonialism between the regions.
Culturally the south holds the vast majority of indiginous peoples, the dominant religious bases, and the lesser share of money.
Former West-German Chancellor Willy Brandt created a visual line, quite squiggly, across the world dividing it into the wealthy north and the poor south.
In summary: Being categorized as part of the "North" implies development as opposed to belonging to the "South", which implies a lack thereof.
Reliance on technology in the North as a psychological factor
It is exactly that concept that has taught the Global South how to live and work around instability in their infrastructure, whether that be political, economic, or technological.
It is a mentality that simply doesn't exist in the north, as evidence by the runaway march toward total digital economic dependence.
The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change wrote an article in 2019 on the state of economic infrastructure in the European Economic Area, stating:
Internet infrastructure services are both widespread and critical to businesses’ core functions, with significant volumes of economic activity dependent on them.
It continues:
[...] some infrastructure services, such as payments or cloud storage, can be thought of as critical infrastructure – any significant or prolonged failure of one of these could undermine the business’s ability to carry out its activities to a potentially existential degree, while possibly triggering a domino effect throughout the rest of the economy. It’s also important to note that many infrastructure businesses higher up the stack are themselves dependent on infrastructure businesses lower down the stack.
This is the main problem the Global North faces in our prompt. A rich, developed society run with fundamental infrastructure built online collapsing under the cascade of failures when that internet access disappears.
Picture a world only ten years in our future. Machine learning has advanced, AI has infiltrated many jobs. It may support a surgeon in their work, providing real-time data in the heat of the moment. Or it may be used in mechanical or civil engineering, providing simulation data that tests and retests the safety of bridges, pipes, or waterways. Students entering the field are taught to work with these systems, and learn to rely on them. Perhaps they learned the theory in school, but in practice you work with the standard tools of the trade. What's left is a gap of functionality. Either you have the tools or you regress to the basics, and practice with the in-between is lost.
Who can you turn to? Who would have the skills you need? Who can help?
Why is the Global South better for this?
The experts growing up in the Global South were forced to learn how to fix their own equipment, and to do so without expensive manufacturers' services. They hack, break, hotfix. They do what they need to make things work, whether it's with the technology or around it.
This type of free-form problem solving is a daily practice. There is far more experience with make-it-work attitudes.
Like Jugaad in India, the creative, inexpensive solution is the most effective because it keeps you moving forward despite your barriers.
This isn't to say that the Global South has no access or knowledge of modern technology. On the contrary, they not only need to know how to use those things, but deeply understand their functioning so they can be patched and maintained with parts never meant for the purpose.
That may mean knowing how to strip out DRM, Digital Rights Management, because a system was designed by people that only ever thought of it being used in the United States. They may need to bypass this or that check, or make a system work somewhere it wasn't intended.
Is it any wonder that Solarpunk found its start there?
We're talking about self-sufficiency here, not primitiveness.
Cuban doctors
Lets look at an example.
After the 1959 Cuban Revolution, Cuba established a program to send its medical personnel overseas, particularly to Latin America, Africa, and Oceania, and to bring medical students and patients to Cuba for training and treatment respectively.
This program became the backbone of what's been called Cuba's soft-diplomacy or doctor diplomacy. It's so successful, these traveling Cuban doctors have their own wikipedia page. But seriously, in 2015, Cuba had more than 50,000 health personnel in 103 different countries. That's more medical personal than all the G8 countries combined. Their work is focused on long-term, sustainable care in the most underserved populations around the world.
Imagine the life of a doctor from the Global South. This isn't her first time in the field, heading to some place desperate for her help. Her people call her a Salvager, dragging out what healing she can from hard-hit places. She knows she's walking into trouble, too. This will be hard. For every person who will cry for her help, there is another she'll have to convince. "We're just here to help," she'll repeat. Conditions will be terrible. They'll lack everything she needs, but she knows what to do to make do. That's her expertise, her experience.
What does that collapse look like?
So what might collapse look like in your story? Imagine all the "public-facing" internet failing. Yeah, some hackers can still get a local network going, maybe a server for a building, but no Facebook. No Amazon. A lot of doctors will say "No problem, most of our records are still on paper!" and then they'll laugh, until they realize their equipment is iOT, and won't work without a manufacturer's server running. No more cloud. No more Google search.
If that surgeon had become reliant on the AI assistant, well it's back to the basics again. Perhaps that's not so bad now, but in 10 years? In 20, when these practices become as commonplace as Excel in an office. Do you even remember using a green sheet? Manually tallying columns and checking your math again and again? How quickly the knowledge of the old way fades.
Then remember the domino effect. One system may be the basis for several more. Our economies are integrated, mixed things. Small disruptions can have major effects. How much worse would a major internet outtage be? Once it went from days to weeks, how many businesses would still survive? And without those functioning, what about food? What about heating? How far down the line do you really need to look before there is a total collapse?
But the internet couldn't really be disrupted, right? That's an extreme example for fiction. Is it believable?
We already see events today that mimic the same result. Ransomware attacks disable hospitals around the world.
https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/security/ransomware-attacks-hospitals-take-toll-patients-rcna54090
https://www.aha.org/center/cybersecurity-and-risk-advisory-services/ransomware-attacks-hospitals-have-changed
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-57184977
It's not just their registration systems. These attacks also affect the machines themselves. Thanks to IOT and Global North thinking, MRIs, tomographs, even dialysis machines can all stop working when they can't get online. When an attack like this hits, sometimes patients need to be transferred to another hospital.
Imagine if it happened to all of them.
Writing ideas
How can we approach these situations with fiction? The setting of the collapsing North is dramatic and will give plenty of impetus for action. The team being sent to aid them is clearly our community protagonist. That's the easy part.
How can we level that up?
Let's lean into the misconceptions to illustrate how painfully wrong they are. The Northern leaders, professors, or administrators may be offended at the idea of these vagrants sent to save them. It need not be vicious or mean, either. These could be well-intending people who lack inter-cultural literacy. Now we have extra tension on top of the infrastructure. Hospitals need to operate. The metro needs to go, even if it hasn't been serviced in a month. The conditions are terrible, and the people aren't even greatful for their help.
Can you feel the struggle there? Just imagine waking up into that reality. How strong must your personal sense of ethics be to withstand it, to weather that storm time and time again.
How strong are your ideals?
Until next time, I'm Tomasino. I hope you'll join me for the next Solarpunk Prompt.

Digital twin technology has allowed businesses in end-use industries to generate digital equivalents of objects and systems across the product lifecycle. The potential use cases of digital twin technology have expanded rapidly over the years, anchored in the increasing trend of integration with internet-of-things  (IoT) sensors. Coupled with AI and analytics, the capabilities of digital twins are enabling engineers to carry out simulations before a physical product is developed. As a result, digital twins are being deployed by manufacturing companies to shorten time-to-market. Additionally, digital twin technology is also showing its potential in optimizing maintenance costs and timelines, thus has attracted colossal interest among manufacturing stalwarts, notably in discrete manufacturing.
The shift to interconnected environments across industries is driving the demand for digital twin solutions across the world. Massive adoption of IoT is being witnessed, with over 41 billion connected IoT devices expected to be in use by 2030. For the successful implementation and functioning of IoT, increasing the throughput for every part or “thing” is necessary, which is made possible by digital twin technology. Since the behavior and performance of a system over its lifetime depend on its components, the demand for digital twin technology is increasing across the world for system improvement. The emergence of digitalization in manufacturing is driving the global digital twin market. Manufacturing units across the globe are investing in digitalization strategies to increase their operational efficiency, productivity, and accuracy. These digitalization solutions including digital twin are contributing to an increase in manufacturer responsiveness and agility through changing customer demands and market conditions.
On the other hand, there has been a wide implementation of digital technologies like artificial intelligence, IoT, clog, and big data which is increasing across the business units. The market solutions help in the integration of IoT sensors and technologies that help in the virtualization of the physical twin. The connectivity is growing and so are the associated risks like security, data protection, and regulations, alongside compliance.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of digital twin technologies to manage industrial and manufacturing assets increased significantly across production facilities to mitigate the risks associated with the outbreak. Amid the lockdown, the U.S. implemented a National Digital Twin Program, which was expected to leverage the digital twin blueprint of major cities of the U.S. to improve smart city infrastructure and service delivery. The COVID-19 pandemic positively impacted the digital twin market demand for twin technology.
Delvens Industry Expert’s Standpoint
The use of solutions like digital twins is predicted to be fueled by the rapid uptake of 3D printing technology, rising demand for digital twins in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, and the growing tendency for IoT solution adoption across multiple industries. With pre-analysis of the actual product, while it is still in the creation stage, digital twins technology helps to improve physical product design across the full product lifetime. Technology like digital twins can be of huge help to doctors and surgeons in the near future and hence, the market is expected to grow.

HP-Fotedar collaboration aims to drive digital transformation in India’s packaging industry
Tumblr media
At the 11th Speciality Films & Flexible Packaging Global Business Summit 2024, A Appadurai of HP India talked about HP’s partnership with Fotedar Engineering and the company’s vision for digital packaging printing solutions in India.
During an interview with Packaging South Asia, Appadurai said HP’s collaboration with Fotedar aims to leverage its established industry relationships, enabling HP to penetrate the Indian market more effectively with its digital printing technology.
Vikram Fotedar, owner of Fotedar Engineering, has extensive experience in the flexible packaging sector, making him an ideal partner for HP. Appadurai explained that HP sees this partnership as a means to accelerate digital adoption in an industry. Despite a handful of digital installations in India, Appadurai believes the industry is on the cusp of a digital revolution, driven by growing consumer expectations and a vibrant startup ecosystem.
Driving growth in the digital packaging market
The HP-Fotedar partnership has resulted in significant growth, with the installation of HP Indigo presses at major Indian companies. “These installations demonstrate that the Indian market is ready to invest in digital technology,” Appadurai said, highlighting that HP’s Indian print volume per machine ranks among the highest worldwide. He attributed this success to the booming startup ecosystem, which relies heavily on agile and flexible packaging solutions that digital printing offers.
For startups, digital packaging is a natural choice. Appadurai explained that many emerging businesses operate on limited budgets, so digital printing’s flexibility allows them to meet their evolving packaging needs without locking in large, long-term investments. HP’s collaborations with the Coffee Board of India, Tamil Nadu Rice, and Atal Incubation Centres exemplify the company's support for startups by providing packaging consultancy and digital printing solutions. HP is also working with the Uttar Pradesh Government’s One District One Product initiative, further supporting startups by providing locally sourced, digital packaging options tailored to smaller production runs.
The rise of premium packaging for startups
Appadurai stressed that a key trend among startups is of growing demand for premium packaging. Startups are now prioritizing high-quality, visually appealing packaging that rivals global brands. For these businesses, the perception created by quality packaging is paramount, and HP’s digital solutions provide them with the flexibility to experiment and refine product packaging as they test and develop their offerings, he said.
“Today, it’s about the experience that a customer has when opening the package,” Appadurai said. He observed that startups are increasingly willing to invest in packaging that represents their brand vision and aligns with their high-quality ingredients, especially in niche areas such as gourmet foods and luxury personal care items.
The impact on larger brands
The digital shift isn’t just benefiting startups. Established brands are also feeling the impact as smaller competitors continue to chip away at their market share. Appadurai argued that in today’s marketplace, brand loyalty is often built on the unique experiences that products offer. He pointed out that digital technology enables established brands to respond to market demands for customization, shorter runs, and tailored packaging campaigns, all of which resonate with today’s consumer preferences.
Future outlook: flexible packaging at the core
HP’s flexible packaging division is one of its fastest-growing verticals in India, experiencing what Appadurai described as "triple-digit growth." The company currently operates six installations across India, two of which were established in the past year through the HP-Fotedar partnership. Appadurai believes that India’s potential for digital packaging is immense, driven largely by the needs of startups seeking high-quality, on-demand packaging solutions.
