Digiweek 2022 Day 7: Free Day

Summary:  Following the events of Kizuna, the Chosen slowly lose their digimon partners, all while struggling to launch their adult lives. Takeru has been smiling through it all, but Yamato is beginning to sense that he needs more help than he lets on... A story exploring grief, seeking, giving, and accepting emotional support, and navigating the line between expressing what you're comfortable expressing and knowing when to seek help. Complete oneshot.

Happy Odaiba Day!  I’m celebrating with a brand new oneshot starring Takeru and Yamato (who came out hilariously STRONK in my drawing, I DIDN’T MEAN TO GO THAT HARD, lol!  I was thinking he has to get fit to start his astronaut training, and suddenly he’s BUILT, sorry Yams).  I’ve been wanting to explore how Takeru and Yamato present themselves- ie, is there a rift between their inner and outer worlds?  If so, is that okay, or is it dishonest?  How much transparency do we owe the world?  I thought the topic was really interesting- but in the end, I think the story is ultimately about brotherhood and emotional support.

I wanted to give a huge thank you to the mods at @digiweek​, and also to the entire digimon fandom!  It’s been so amazing to see your wonderful work this week.  I’m so pleased and proud to be a part of this community, thank you so very much for having me!  I love you, and Happy Odaiba Day!

Fic Launch: Puits d’Amour

I just launched my Yamato x Sora royalty/bakery AU!  This gorgeous, stunning, amazing cover art is by @llamavillana!  Thank you, I can’t begin to thank you enough!  Llama has so much incredible art on her Tumblr, please check it out (have you seen this cutie cute cute Koushiro?!)!  Can you even believe how soft this piece is?!  And I adore the use of greenery.  AND LOOK HOW PRINCELY YAMS IS AND HOW ADORABLE AND LOVELY SORA IS, I CANNOT!!!!!!

Summary:

Yamato and his brother, Takeru, were born to royal parents from different countries, who wed to seal the peace between their warring nations. The brothers were sent to live in Autun, their mother's country, until coming of age- and now, Yamato is old enough to return to Hakone, his father's country, where he will one day rule. Displaced and missing his home and his brother, Yamato wanders into a café selling pastries he often ate in Autun... And meets Sora, a woman who exudes welcome and comfort. A bakery/royalty AU about finding your home and your path.

Main characters: Yamato, Sora, Jyou, Takeru, Mimi, but the entire Adventure/02 cast is included

The main couple is Yamato x Sora, but there are additional minor couples.

I wrote this for Nanowrimo 2021 and edited/made art for it during @campdigimonth​!  I plan to update every other week for...  Well, for a while, as lots of content is ready to go!  I’ve been working and sitting on this for three months, and I am so so SO excited to share it with you all!  Please enjoy it, and let me know if you liked it!  Thank you so much!

Digiweek 2021 Day 7 - Home | Shades of red; a Taikoura fanfiction

Chapter 7/7. Purple shimmers & orange-red glow

A/N: It's the last day of @digiweek. Officially it's a 'Free day' but I went with the other given word 'Home'. It's a short epilogue chapter, but I'm full with ideas (outlining, dialogues, scenarios) covering up the time gaps between the chapters. So this won't be the end of Shades of Red!

Of course it's the 1st of August meaning it's Odaiba Memorial Day, so I did a little DigiweekxO.D.M. mash up. So through this way I want to wish all of you a happy August 1st! For the readers who sticked with me till the end: thank you! It's been a blast :3

Every first of August they reunited in the parc of Odaiba. Cooling down the Summer’s heat underneath the trees, the shadows making all of them focus on each other. It had always been nice to see everyone together. Especially after each and everyone of them grew older, right into adulthood.

Right now everyone was at a point in his, her or their life where they achieved something. Being it job-related or family-related, a huge achievement or a smaller one. They had both literally and figuratively grown bigger and older and things had changed, but being here all together on the first of August made them relive the past as if not that much had changed. It wasn’t like they were holding on to the past, not at all. It had just always been nice to see familiar faces, because those faces were the only thing that never changed.

To Taichi the biggest change were the feelings. His feelings. And his idea of home.

Taichi smiled to himself, feeling the pressure in his arms move a little. Worriedly his eyes shifted from overlooking the parc to the little bundle in his arms. The most recent change was only one month old. He could feel all different kinds of feelings immediately flow through him upon looking down.

In his arms rested a little girl. The tiny hands clenched into fists, pumping in the air. Her small legs gently kicked nothing in particular. The sounds coming out of her little mouth were not a surprise to Taichi anymore, but his worried look was still in place. He tilted his head, a caring smile appeared on his lips while rocking the little girl in his arms. The shush-sound he eventually made, not ever shifting his gaze away from the baby girl, made her open her eyes. His brown eyes met her brown eyes. Though it was a different shade of brown, but to Taichi beautiful all the same. He smiled, bringing the little girl up while lowering his own head, nuzzling his nose into her short, soft and fluffy baby hair.

Unlike his own brown hair, the little girl’s hair was more a darker red with a tendency towards a brown shade with a purple shimmer to it. He always described it as a soft and bright maroon color, the perfect mix between the little girl’s mommy and daddy. That thought alone made Taichi smile even wider.

“Daddy daddy! Look what I’ve found!” came a voice making him shift his eyes up from the little girl to the toddler in front of him. The energetic boy proudly pointed to his head where an orange-esque flower sparkled up his brownish colored spikey hair. ��Auntie Kari stuck it in my hair. Do you like it daddy?”

The flower complimented his little boy’s hair. It was less spiky and a lighter brown than Taichi’s own hair. The sunshine made his son’s hair glow a natural orange-red, making it look more auburn like his mother’s hair.

“Handsome boy,” Taichi smiled. “You should show mommy the treasure you have found! She loves flowers.”

The boy nodded, giving his little sister in Taichi’s arm a small peck on the forehead before he ran to his mother to show her the flower as well. Taichi followed the little boy all the way to where his mommy stood.

And his second daddy.

Love filled Taichi’s whole being, seeing his life partners standing there arm in arm. Smiling, laughing, beaming. Sora’s head resting on Koushiro’s shoulder while talking and listening to Yamato, Mimi and Jyou. The way both Sora and Koushiro shifted their attention to the little boy who desperately wanted to show his parents the flower he had found, full of care and love to give, made Taichi’s heart flutter a little more. It confirmed his founded happiness.

Had Hikari never told him about the concept of polyamory, he would have never thought anything like that existed. So he felt grateful for her support. Actually for all of his friend’s supports. He felt on top of the world with Koushiro on one and Sora on his other side. He felt something indescribable beyond love seeing the two joyful and beautiful children the three of them were raising together. A bit unusual, but it completed him in every way. So Taichi didn’t care.

He felt happy with every shade of red in his life. But he only felt at home with their four reds especially.

Odaiba Memorial Day 2021

My first Odaiba Memorial Day while being an active part of the fandom, and it’s high time I write an essay about my crackhead obsession with Yakari.

(*There will be some swearing & f-bombs in this post) As a kid, Yamato was like the ‘blue and cooler Taichi’ to me, like he doesn’t exist without being adjacent to the gogglehead. Also my family didn’t have the full Dark Masters arc in our CD collection, so I literally knew nothing about Yams’ emotional meltdown. But now, I adore this overly sensitive dork, and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way. Maybe I’m biased in this reading, but I think Yamato has had to push himself to mature faster than his peers; and he’s very much a mini-adult at a young age. For all these grand monster battles, the main cast are still children; among them Yamato is a kid dealing with a lot of unresolved issues but he’s got a lot of heart, he’s passionate about those he holds dear but he just doesn’t know how to process this. Another thing that goes hand-in-hand with Yamato is the fact he’s a musician. Again, I could be reaching way into my ass here; but there’s this mumbo jumbo real life idea of the ‘depressed creative’, and Yamato works his way out of that dangerously romanticised label. The kid’s got a passion for music, he’s literally been playing the harmonica since Takeru was in diapers .Without spoiling DA:LEK, Yamato still holds onto that flame into adulthood but it’s not something he can actively work on; and that takes its toll. I love Yamato because he’s someone who cares so much about those around him and what he does; and he’s just a kid who’ sorting things out and wanting to better himself and well fuck, if that isn’t relateable. Even with the flaws that the Tri films have, I think it’s a natural progression for Yamato’s character journey. I see people saying how ‘they just turned him into a tsundere’ or ‘he’s so snappish now’. But seeing as most of the Tri cast are in High School and general teenagers are assholes to each other, yeah it’s not unreasonable to see why Yamato’s the way he is now. He didn’t lose his touch with the Crest of Friendship; when the literal world is up in flames, there’s still the same loyal and compassionate Yamato who understands the importance of being there for and with his friends. Yamato’s a big mushy boy who has a hard time conveying what he feels and his needs; Hikari isn’t any better and this was how I grew to love the concept of them being together. She’s not the Chosen Child of Light for nothing, Hikari’s symbiotic partnership with Tailmon is a very shoehorned metaphor of being an angel from Heaven and I absolutely eat that shit up. Fans have pointed out Hikari’s so mysterious with her role and powers as late member of the team, the same can be said for her personality. You see Hikari, you think ‘sweet, little girl’ and in part thanks to the 02 dub, she grows into being this sassy brat. 

A brat who has trouble asserting herself and is prone to literally get dragged into an ocean of depression. Like any respectful human, Hikari cares for her friends and family; but a mixture of that and a tendency to devalue herself is Hikari’s fatal flaw. She’s too self-sacrificing to a fault, and this reflects the other extreme end of her crest. In my own overly pretentious words, I think Hikari has self-imposed on herself for ‘being the light of the team’; like she carries herself as a doll whose job is to bring others out of darkness when she’s still stuck in the shadows herself. Hikari doesn’t allow herself to verbalise her wants, let alone her needs because she doesn’t want to inconvenience others; she just goes with the flow and puts on a mask of toxic optimism. 

I am aware this analyse could be me scraping the bottom of the barrel, but it’s how I interpreted Yamato and Hikari’s character; and now I’ll articulate my brain rot  with how the fuck are these two being shipped.  

You have these two people who already have this history and experience of being Chosen Children, but there’s also an underlying sub-connection of them being each other’s brothers’ best friend. As many Yakari fanfics have headcanon, it’s not unreasonable to think that Yamato’s at the Yagamis’ apartment frequently because A) Taichi is his best friend and B) The Ishida apartment is prolly empty ‘cause Hiroaki’s out being a workaholic. The Yagamis become the family that Yamato didn’t have growing up, and they welcome him with open arms. At their apartment, things are warm and rowdy, he doesn’t have to be alone with his thoughts and they treat him as a second son. Listen, I've been a diehard Takari shipper too, but I genuinely think Takeru and Hikari can be platonic soulmates. They know each other like the back of their hand, they’re cosmically entwined and their Digimon are in sync; they’re also legit a pair of best friends too. I know early 2000’s fics depict Yakari as being this big drama; but I have a weak heart and I’m here to say Yakari can be cosy and comforting and they’re just two idiots in love who need to be honest with each other.

I imagine their courtship not to be this grand display of fireworks and ‘the chase’, but a very subtle experience with slow burn. For me, Yakari is very much the first blossom of spring. They represent new beginnings and youth, the gentle lull of Mother Nature tending to the earth, something that’s natural but the routine has existed for centuries. Yakari is very much a gentle love, and with everything I’ve said about their characters; these two learn to embrace and nurture the other until they have a whole garden of spring’s blossoms. 

This crackship has the surface-layer appeal of ‘brooding lone wolf’ and ‘sweet angel’, so when you peel the layers to find these two very private characters who just need that one-on-one reassurance/affirmation; this ship is a warm blanket of fluff and yes that’s basically the plot of my fics. It’s the charm of slice-of-life, the endearment of growing and improving yourself with the one you love with the occasional reminder that this is a series founded on puppies evolving into angels. 

I’ve had enough of tragedies and melodramatic love affairs. I write about Yakari because as cliche as this sounds, I want more stories about ‘the light of friendship’. Yes that was a god awful line, but it captures why I have brain rot for this pair. To celebrate my first OMD, I have uploaded a special chapter on my AO3 fic titled ‘Mon ange’; it wouldn’t be August 1st if I didn’t half-hazardly work on this leading up to the big day. It couldn’t fit on Instagram, but this rambling piece is part of a bigger essay on my tumblr, so that’s also up and running. I hold Digimon near and dear to my heart, and I go about sharing that love by gushing about Yakari.

Writing fic is awesome. There can be moments of feeling stuck, and trying to figure out how this scene should go or how that part should be worded, but being able to write out my ideas for characters I love and then being able to read them later is so comforting!

Day 7 - Home (Free Day)

In this last DigiWeek Day and first Odaiba Memorial Day, I can only say THANK YOU VERY MUCH. It's the first time I managed to participate in a special week in its entirety and I couldn't be happier that it was about Digimon, which means so much for me.

✨Happy Odaiba Day!!✨

On such a special day, I decided to finish this old piece of Eri and Kudamon. She’s my very first OC and has been growing up with me and going under a lot of changes since I first watched Digimon Adventure on 2000.

A random fact about her: her fashion choices will almost always include suspenders in one way or another.

Meanwhile, Ken evaluates his feelings, friendship, and future with Daisuke. (This story uses video-game style text box images in place of dialogue.)

This chapter is for the @digiweek​ day 7 “home” prompt, though technically my entire story is relevant to that prompt, as it involves Joe living in his new home. HAPPY ODAIBA DAY 2021!!!!!

Odaiba, Take #2 was a success!

We started our day with some coffee, using the Cyber Sleuth Alphamon mugs @elecmon designed for us! We ate some more Guilmon bread, too.

We watched Digimon: The Movie and X-Evolution while we did some drawing.

@angrychickenman played Hacker's Memory for the first time, and chose Gottsumon as his first digimon!

Just like last year, we had our Crest-colored Calypso drinks!

Today was a good day. 💖

I lost the info for this blog for a while, then just got a bit busy to figure it out, I work two jobs atm, 😅😅 but after a too-long hiatus, and on Odaiba Day 2021 of all things, I'm making a small comeback!

I've still been raising Digimon!

I have 10-ish V-Pets of assorted types, been raising here or there. I'd like to chronicle a NEW hatch for everyone because of Odaiba Day, I'll make a small, separate post.

行逢りば兄弟 • ichariba chode

Ichariba Chode is an Okinawan Japanese saying that means “through we meet but once, even by chance, we are friends for life.” The phrase was also said by Wataru Urazoe, Takato’s grandfather, when Takato visited Okinawa in the movie Digimon Tamers: Battle of The Adventurer. The phrase, I believe, is a perfect description of the relationship between the humans and their respective Digimon partner in general. For Tamers and some other Digimon universes, it is unfortunate that they could only be together for a short time, but forever they will be friends. And of course, our hope is no less bigger than theirs: for someday, they can be with each other again. I always get ridiculously sentimental on August 1, and this year is no exception. SO MANY EMOTIONS SO MUCH LOVE!!! for a series that is more than 20 years old at this point.

I have actually been thinking a lot about something that @rockthistowninsideout said today:

"The older I get the more my love for Digimon is less rooted in the franchise (though I still adore it of course) but in the fandom."

I really, REALLY resonated with that!! Not because I don't still love the franchise-- of course I do!-- but I think what has made this love last as long as it has is really down to all the people I've been so fortunate to meet and interact with along the way. From those old Oekaki BBS boards (the first art I ever published on the Internet!) to webrings, mailing lists, LiveJournal communities, fanfic, fanart, gift exchanges, celebration events, con panels, Discord groups, zines, in-jokes, memes, schemes (both realized and unrealized), brainstorming, and good old-fashioned all-caps flailing... the passion and devotion to this franchise is real, and it's something I have seemingly endless fond memories of at this point in my life. I almost wish I could take all our collective memories and put them in a book to create a history of the English-speaking Digimon community, just to document how awesome we are for future generations XD

Anyway, I've been drawing Tai for my entire active time in the fandom, so here are some of my favorites from 2001-2021. I actually don't think I've drawn him this year (please don’t revoke my fangirl card!), so you only get 20 years of him instead of 21 ^^; But I love that big-haired kid, and I'm pretty sure I always will.

Happy Odaiba Memorial Day 2022 to all my dear Digimon friends out there, past, present, and future. You are, and have always been, what makes this fandom feel like home <3

DigiWeek 2021: 8/1 Odaiba Day

This is our last evolution, and this is also our new adventure!

My take on Odaiba Day this year is drawing Taichi and Yamato from Kizuna running against the time to confront Menoa and Eosmon.

I draw these youths running in pure white background to show emptiness surrounding them. The remaining Chosen Children have been rendered unconscious by Eosmon (except Sora who has retired as Chosen Child, and Daisuke and co. who also join the fray in USA). And it is up to Taichi and Yamato to save them by defeating Eosmon. While they are running against the time, a spiritual image of another Digimon protags materializes behind their backs, indicating that they are spiritually supporting those men (yes, including Kizuna version of Daisuke and WonderSwan version of Ryou regarding of his status as legendary one). I depict them similar with the characters using Miracle Lights in Pretty Cure All Stars movies (where the Cures are in brink of defeat and the viewers support them by raising Miracle Lights to engage a Power Up and defeat the Big Bad).

And last but not least, Happy Odaiba Day for Digimon fans!
