okay i slept on it and i think the summary of what i feel was wrong with tri really is "this is misery porn"

like, of all the new characters introduced (daigo, himekawa, meiko, meicoomon), all of them needlessly suffer to a degree the legacy cast isn't really allowed to feel (at least not genuinely to me, since we know the epilogue is canon--- the fakeout in movie 5 never could have worked)

and like, by the end of the movies literally only one of them is left alive because the others all die horrible, horrible deaths???

i don't necessarily need all of them to survive, but i do think that their deaths feel cheap, narratively speaking, and compounded with tri's obsession with mentioning other things without entirely thinking about the consequences (yggdrasil, apocalymon, the dark masters, the four holy beasts, the quantum sea, reboots in general, oh look it's the digimon emperor!, etc.), it makes the experience feel a lot less pleasant to rewatch.

i do recall enjoying tri when it was coming out, but that was as it was coming out. the fact it doesn't hold up when you know what happens is frustrating to me.

ouagh, anyways, i think i'm almost done talking about tri, but i did try to go into the tag and look for any previously existing commentary. i could not find any that easily (tumblr really gets mad at you when you scroll past so many gifs), so if you're someone who likes tri in any way, i'm inviting you to come into my ask box or reblog this post with things you did like about tri that i may have missed.

i did enjoy enough of tri that i really want to hear what folks who like it saw in the movies. while a lot of my liveblogs were bitching about the movies, it's a lot easier to verbally complain about things that frustrate me than it is for me to vocalize the lots of little things that i did like about tri.

i know i vocalized how much i enjoyed izzy and sora's characterization in loss, but i barely spoke any about the second and third movies (i think? idk i literally just sat down and enjoyed those two movies for the most part) because i was too busy just enjoying the silly shenanigans. the school festival and hot spring stuff may come across as "filler" (air quotes because genuinely what the fuck does that mean these days?), and maybe they could have better spent that time fleshing out parts of the plot that they really should have let bake a little longer, but also??? if we didn't have those scenes, idk if i would have been so fucking pissed about the hand bandai dealt meiko and meicoomon.

Hello, I'm not dead

Apparently there's discourse about Ghost Game and that has lit Something in me that now I really really want to find out what that's about and the only way to do that is to power through Xros Wars, Tri, Appliverse, Adventure (2020), so it looks like I'm gonna have to do that sooner rather than later.

So going back to my hypothesis from waaay waaaaaay back near the end of Volume 2, I'd say that Cinder's monologue here is very much in keeping with one who might be feeling a little burned (heh) by the botched evacuation of Mountain Glenn. However, I can't help but suspect that Cinder herself is just a pawn of an even larger game here, and the consistent Chess Piece imagery does little to shake that suspicion.

I'm losing it again. Look at them. The brothers. The everything. This moment is utterly unimportant in the vast expanse of lore learned in this episode but I'm still stuck like . Ack. Eek. Ough. You reunite with your brother and stand between him and the enemy and sit beside him and ough ack eek. Damage tick. Damage tick.

This episode does some cool things:

We get our first Deva Digimon, and if I remember correctly, they're considered the main threat from this point until the D-Reaper twist.

Growlmon, the last to digivolve, gets the first Matrix Digivolution into Wargrowlmon.

Takato feeling every hit that Growlmon (and then Wargrowlmon) takes is a cool bit of foreshadowing on what their final digivolutions will be.

Going slightly feral over Digimon with @ciunasboinin via message and I could not resist digging out my old school dvd of the digimon movie & watching it

I cannot believe I temporarily forgot about the weird ass cartoon you get at the beginning & also the digimon rap 😂

God I love this film. I still maintain that its such a GOAT movie and yet super underrated.

oh, okay, i see tri actually doing a little cooking on the stovetop with like, one of tai's first character moments after the intro being "oh yeah that assignment where i write a list of future goals... i didn't do it."

kizuna definitely expands on that point but i didn't realize that tai's lack of future plans had a seed planted way back in tri

​I did! I believe I have talked about my whole "Kick the Dog" corollary to the "Save the Cat" trope, and even though Emerald isn't a terribly sympathetic individual at this point, I do think that henchman abuse is classic Kick The Dog behaviour.

Digimon Ghost Game liveblog: First cour, AKA: The introduction

Overall opinion: A great introduction to the characters and stakes of the show, all the basis for the characters are there and the vibe of a spooky show with slice of life elements is in full swing

By the way, there's a hidden haiku in the commentary, try to find it

Ah, see, I remembered incorrectly.

Henry's not just anti-digivolution because Terriermon almost died but because when Terriermon digivolved the first time he became just as merciless and power-hungry and bloodthirsty as any other digimon.

Also Henry getting emotionally attached to what is supposed to be a fictional video game character just like all of us here on ye olde tumblr.com.
