Honestly the Frontier stage drama is anything BUT “disposable material that shouldn’t be considered canon.” Given the character arcs from the main series, the drama script itself, and the tones and voices the VAs used on stage (Tomoki’s deadpan tones rank #1 on that list, and it was a joy to hear), it’s very much something that could fit into the canon perceptions we have about each character. After all, this takes place just two years after the story, while the drama CD takes place (as you or someone else mentioned) several years later when everyone’s much busier and gotten used to being close with each other for some time.

Also, that fanart from Twitter was so delightful and perfect, and never have I seen something that so aptly conveyed exactly what would have happened had this script been animated (still holding out for more Frontier official art)

Trust me, when I was lazily scrolling through Twitter reading liveblog reactions from people attending the event, the entire timeline was just full of people going "how dare you put this kind of quality content in a vanishable stage reading?!" To give a frame of reference about what kind of content you'd normally expect from stage readings:

A silly crossover skit from 2003 with Adventure through Frontier characters discussing what constitutes a Digimon protagonist (cute, but basically just for fun as a crossover special)

The one tri. one from 2016 where the boys talk about how to hit on girls (this one actually did get on Blu-ray, but 2016 was a bit of a special case)

The Kizuna one from 2019 where the Digimon debate on what to give their partners for August 1 (cute but also canonically inconsequential compared to the official media from the movie)

The Tamers one from last year (which...I think most of us would like to forget if possible anyway)

...and, well, Frontier material is so scarce that anything is valuable, but at the same time they really just barraged us with a whole wave of extremely important material all of us were dying to know. In a vanishiable stage reading. That really is offensive. Thankfully, even questionably legal stuff aside, we had multiple people like the above-mentioned fanartist liveblogging and keeping records and summaries of what happened, but...!

(Actually, the thing that revealed these apparently aren't supposed to be canon is from a certain writer from last year being extremely salty about the fact he couldn't make any long-lasting additions to the Tamers timeline, due to the fact the official stance was that anything that goes into a stage reading is to have all records wiped. The reason is that these events tend to be rights nightmares, so other than 2016 being a special case they usually can't clear the rights to have these on preservable media and therefore don't want to have future canon depend on temporary things like this. But it's not like Frontier is all that likely to have media that contradicts any of this in the future, let alone much canonical media at all, so as long as we all agree that we have enough records of this story to acknowledge it for the time being...)

Given the way they've been handling anniversaries and based on the dates the Tamers one spanned and the Frontier one started, it seems like the air date in April is actually being used as the start and end date instead of having it be January to January, so we actually have more than six months left in the Frontier anniversary. I wouldn't rule out more new art or merch!

And that artist's work (referring to this) is super lovely, isn't it? I really appreciate attempts to preserve and visualize the contents of it, and that artist's passion for Frontier is super clear and passionate. They've been liveblogging their rewatch with fanart, and I definitely recommend checking going to their profile and checking it out.

Remember when I said I might to a Xros Wars liveblog/rewatch becuase I don’t remember it all that well?  No? Well today is apparently the 8th anniversary of Digimon Fusion, and while I’m going to go off of the sub (Xros Qars), if I’m going to do this re-watch liveblog thing it’s as good a time as any to start.

Haven’t really tried anything of this style, so I’m experimenting a little bit.

Pic of the day: Common sense

We open with a menacing army full of Mookmon, sorry, Troopmon, Tankmon, and some bigger baddies. Like physically bigger, I don’t recall them being very important. (I see you Valvemon in the top left.)  

Then we get introduced to a human and a trio of Digimon that will in no way be important.

There’s also an army of good guys, you can tell they are good guys because they show up in previous seasons.  I uh, only actually remember two of them appearing in this show.

Anyway, Taiki says Digixros a bunch, and the three non-silhouettes merge together into….x4?  Poor Starmon I guess, no recognition.  

X4 then solos the army of Mookmon, which is probably why the rest of the ‘good’ army never appears again, clearly they are superfluous.  But X4 gets taken down by a lone off-color Greymon because nostalgia.

..and it was a dream.

(So Akari and Zenjirou don’t matter....that sounds about right.)

We are then introduced to Akari, who is trying to deduce exactly which ball-based team sport she got stood up for.

She stops midway to take a selfie, kids these days, amirite?  Also to grab a bag with Taiki’s name on it...literally.

Taiki manages to pull an MVP move on the basketball court, by pretending to be in a sports anime when really just passing to a teammate.  Thus securing the team the win that he’s been looking for for months… sorry, I mean four days.

Yeah, that’s a Taiki thing.  The kid is a prodigy at nearly anything he picks up.  The implication is that he throws himself into it completely, and then:

He does not necessarily pick the best time or place for a nap.

Akari being the best character (of this arc)

Taiki reveals that his need to throw himself headfirst is because of a desire to help those in need, not because he’s just showing off.

(I am reminded how much his gary-stu ness annoyed me the first time I watched this.)

Zenjirou shows up and I’m def going to spell that name wrong at some point.  He’s mostly here for comic relief, but also to reinforce that Taiki can pick up a sport (kendo) in a couple of days and beat people who have been training their entire lives.

While Akari and Zenjirou rehash the great 1998 case of Bros V. Hoes, Taiki hears the voice of a dying king, then suddenly: chaos.  Cars merge into walls, phones stop working, the sky turns green, dogs and cats, living together.

Turns out, cars superimposed into building are not stable.  The strange voice warns Taiki of the falling car, and after he saves his friends, he is now able to see the tortured outline of Shoutmon.

All well and good, Taiki, but how do you propose helping the disembodied light?

(We also get a flashback to baby Taiki between these)

Shoutmon soft-mocks Taiki for trying to help him, and Taiki points out Shoutmon did the same, just in case you didn’t believe they were destined partners.

Floating toy with another disembodied voice.  Offering to help if Taiki accepts, he does and the x loader turns from white to red.  The others reasonably do not think touching the floating mystical toy is a good idea.

They wake up in a strange world, normal Digimon stuff, turns out the X-loader doubles as a Pokecenter, very convinent.

Then, suddenly the army of mookmon appear, lead by a new Digimon:

(Look. if the writers determined you were going to die every season, you wouldn’t be very happy either.)

But then dream Digimon #2 shows up to save them, alongside a bunch of babies.  Shoutmon also comes out to fight.  .

We get a quick sequence of the allies using special attacks to wipe the floor with the mooks, normal debut episode things.  Then Madleomon gets mad that a human is involved and absorbs all his friends to…Digivolve?

(They missed a perfect opportunity for raving MadLeomon)

Uhh, good plan?

The mysterious voice tells Taiki to use the x-loader, which he does to form…the top half of a super-fighting robot.  Which lasts long enough to get off one punch before dissolving. He then xroses the Starmon and Pickmons into a sword, (will happen a bunch.) just in case you weren’t sure of the core mechanic.

Madleomon’s powerup breaks, and he gets forced back, namedropping a greater villain.  Tactimon, obsessed with perfection.  Which is a good thing, because if he’s like half the perfectionist I know he’ll be too busy sorting out all the details of his plan to actually execute it.

Coming on a little strong there bub.  Maybe take him out for a coffee first?

The name of the kids this time is generals, but that also gets extended to some Digimon.

If you are used to normal Digimon seasons, this is going to be a bit of a jump.  It isn’t the normal 1 human 1 partner here.  This is a battle of armies, (but mostly just jogress ++)

And yeah, they know nothing.

Keep being creepy Nene.

And also blond blue boy featuring off-color Greymon. 

And thus ends the first episode that was mostly about introducing Taiki, and the concept of Digixrosing. Also uses a lot of X4 for never showing every component.

I think maaayyybe Vmon shows up in a limited capacity?  For a series that is perfectly willing to completely ignore levels and do something completely different in terms of evolution, there sure is a lot of nostalgia pandering.

Digimon Xros Wars: Hunters Ep8 Liveblog

Tagiru meets another hunter in the shopping district who’s been hunting Digimon for money! And, a new and interesting way for Digimon to absorb human emotion to gain power is introduced!

the episode title is "the shopping district hunter" so it's not hard to figure out who this guy with the purple xros loader is but I am SO excited to see even more hunters besides just the main characters. i wanna see just how many players this game has, and what kind of people they are.

i wonder if this purple hunter works at the shopping district…? his clothes kinda look like a clerk's uniform, and he has a little money symbol on his shirt. I'm guessing he's either a shopping district worker or friend of the shopping district who's preventing Digimon from interfering or endangering people or maybe he just likes money

oh ok he does seem to work there! the concept of a hunter who only works in one area just to prevent problems is interesting.

or he doesn't work there! but he's passing himself off as, like, an IT worker when all he's really doing is defeating Digimon? (well, i suppose that's not actually too far off from being an IT worker. it's just a little less abstract)

ok he's hunting the Digimon to fix the registers to get a cash reward. got it. also i wonder how he met Dobermon?

it is pretty shallow to just be in it for the money (he could choose to just do this out of kindness), but honestly hunting Digimon that are causing trouble as a job seems pretty valid

Yuu doesn't seem happy about fighting Digimon as a business, just like he was against fighting them as a game.

all of these yen coin Digimon remind me of the money mon that was in the fan contest at the end of Xros Wars. i wonder if that one will show up…?

and now what they thought were easy catches for money are actually part of a bigger plot … also comparable to an extended fetch-quest, since they fell out of Ganemon's briefcase (which isn't an uncommon framing for fetch-quests. it really is kinda odd how Xros Wars was all about "fighting is NOT a game, you should not treat war lightly" and then Hunters pulls a full reversal and makes Digimon hunting a literal game started by an old man. i sort of wonder if Hunters will turn that on its head again somehow? it's interesting to look at the video game metaphors in both series, anyhow.

it's nice to see that Tagiru is OK with being helpful by helping Ganemon even if it means he doesn't get to keep the Zenimon. it's also nice to see that he's got helping the shopping district (instead of just turning a profit) at the front of his mind

yknow I WAS getting untrustworthy vibes from Ganemon but thought maybe it was just his design but nope. he clearly wants the Zenimon for something malicious. perhaps they're fuel for an evolution?

perhaps eating the money found by the Zenimon is fuel for an evolution? I'm expecting some sort of power boost to happen here.

I know that side characters are about to jump in and claim to be relevant for a while, but alternatively I would like to interpret Tomoyo’s smile as saying “um you literally drove into my fucking car how else”

I understand that they need to bring in the supporting cast to properly say goodbye to them and wrap up their plotlines but I FEEL TOMOYO WAS EXPLAINING THIS JUST FINE WITHOUT YOU. DID WE REALLY NEED TO INTERRUPT HER SO YOU COULD TAKE OVER FOR SOME REASON?

Adventure Episode 16

The Digidestined are walking through another desert. I’m starting to think the Digital World just automatically fills in desert terrain if there’s nothing important nearby.

The group are worried about keeping ahead of Etemon. Tai tells them not to worry too much, they just need to figure out how to use his new crest to get Agumon up to Ultimate. Tai figures all he needs to do is make sure Agumon is well-fed for energy and he’s in danger- which Etemon will provide either way.

“And if that doesn’t work, I’ll just get a new Digimon!“

Probably a joke, but Agumon visibly doesn’t take it that way and Tai doesn’t notice.

Yep, we’re doing the “don’t be a  dick to your partner“ episode all kid with monster partner shows need to go through.

Tai has in fact confiscated everyone else’s rations and is attempting to give Agumon 14 shares of food. Not sure why they allowed that, they’re in a damn desert.

Sora and Izzy have a conversation to the effect of “You know, Tai isn’t usually a complete douche what’s up with this“ until Joe’s tag starts glowing.

Which I guess answers “Do tags actually do anything?“ the answer is that it apparently helps you find your crest.

Joe runs towards a colloseum in the distance, then faceplants after tripping over a Dark Network cable, immediately letting Etemon know where everyone is. He recognises the colloseum as where he holds his annual tribute concert to himself. He calls his minions in the area and tells them to roll out the welcome wagon and keep the kids occupied as he’s on his way.

The colloseum turns out to contain a football pitch, causing the group to form a humans vs digimon team game whilst Joe looks for his crest... Until Tai throws a hissy fit at them for trying to have fun.

Honestly, I know from meta-knowlege that Tai is team leader, but in the early arc they weren’t organised enough to have leadership. This is the first time he’s really tried to take charge beyond simply having a fairly confident personality and a self-percieved responsibility to keep morale up.

Etemon speaks to them via the Jumbotron, still being a long way off, and when they try to flee he drops one of the goal nets over them, electrified so that they can’t escape. Agumon was too slow and lethargic from his deviantart stuffing session, so got isolated from the rest of the group. Etemon takes this opportunity to release another Greymon into the arena to force Agumon to fight in a mirror match.

The amimation team miss an opportunity to redraw the digivolution scene to reflect a bloated and lethargic agumon. To be expected though.

Greymon recieves a predictable beatdown from the other Greymon who’s in fighting condition, including getting shoved into the electric fence, a period of literal curbstomping and an uncomfortable burp instead of being able to breathe fire. Tai spends the entire period yelling at him.

Also Tentomon keeps flying into the fence like it’s a bug zapper.

Tai, at this exact moment: “GET UP AND FIGHT!”

Etemon orders one of his Gazimon to break out the fireworks for his arrival, and I wasn’t actually going to mention that in this liveblog because I thought it was a trivial detail but no, so:

The Gazimon runs up this weird statue and starts letting off fireworks.

Gomamon tries using his Marching Fishes attack, and water pours out of the statue’s mouths and releases fish, which start flying, grab the fireworks, fly up to and harass Etemon’s Greymon, then leave.

Joe asks Gomamon how he did that, gets back “I don’t know but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.“ Izzy cuts in and says it’s “probably just a dimensional vortex rift” then Sora waves goodbye to the fish as they fly off into the upper atmosphere.

...Anyway,

The Digidestined set to lifting flagstones so as to try to tunnel out from under the goal net. One of the flagstones is Joe’s crest, and removing it causes them to fall into a tunnel network beneath the arena. In the meantime, Greymon is being choked out by Greymon. The kids get out without incident, and instead of doing the sensible thing and ganging up on the Greymon Tai insists on going out alone and throwing rocks to provoke it whilst yelling at his own Greymon to just frickin’ digivolve already.

The other kids catch on and start digivolving their ‘Mons to try to rescue him, but they’re too late and a beam shoots out of Tai’s crest turning into a roiling cloud of darkness spreading across the sky, which turns into pillars of dark fire which shoot down into Greymon.

Technically, this does count as achieving ultimate.

The other Greymon tries to flee, but is backhanded into the Jumbotron then he, the jumbotron and half the stands on that side of the coloseum are evaporated by one of the weird shark-missiles Skullgreymon can shoot from his back.

Tai yells at Skullgreymon that he’s his partner and he has to obey him.

Skullgreymon attempts to step on Tai, then is engaged in battle by the other partner digimon. They aren’t able to do any meaningful damage, and Etemon flips out back in his trailer as the collateral damage severs his Dark Network connection to the area and cuts off his ability to observe what’s happening.

Skullgreymon smashes through a wall of the coloseum and runs off into the desert smashing everything in his path until he runs out of energy and devolves all the way back to Koromon.

Koromon has a different voice actor than he did in his first appearance, that is to say, he used to just have the same voice as agumon, now he’s clearly a woman doing a high pitched falsetto to sound babyish. That aside, he’s freaking out over all the damage he caused and attacking the others. And for disappointing Tai. Matt tells Koromon it’s not his fault, as Tai finally catches on to how he’s been acting.

Tai: Sora this is all my fault isn’t it?

Sora: Yes.

Other than that though, he basically gets away with looking kinda sad and saying “Please forgive me?“

This was a really chaotic episode, even by Digimon Adventure standards, with weird goings on and asspulls left and right. That said, Skullgreymon’s design steals the show by being a freakishly huge, lanky-proportioned terror with strange bony protrusions, an exposed heart and uh... a shark missile.

Favourite solo artists: Ummm I guess that would be artists on Youtube that do English covers of anime songs. Dream job: Game Designer! It has always been my passion. When I was younger it was more of videogame designer but now I lean more towards tabletop games. I so enjoy the study of it too, just seeing why certain mechanics are good or not. How what is ‘fun’ to one person isn’t fun to another. It is such a passion I can’t begin to explain!

TSOL Chapter 30 Liveblog

The Song of Love by Koukacs / Lightchildofthespring is a longfic retelling of Digimon Adventure where Taichi and Yamato never became Chosen Children, so the focus is more on the other children. It’s epic and dramatic and the ladies are awesome.

Supposedly SHOCKING THINGS are supposed to happen in this chapter, so I have decided to liveblog it!

Please, DO NOT READ THIS LIVEBLOG unless you have read “The Song of Love”! There will be massive spoilers!!

Anyway that’s me (I’m both of them), SUPER READY to tackle this chapter!

How much suffering will you get away with, Koukacs?? I’LL FIND OUT!

Thoughts before I begin:

Supposedly this chapter is darker than “For Friendship, Perhaps,” where there was a GRISLY MURDER.

I REALLY DON’T KNOW HOW YOU CAN GET DARKER THAN THAT BUT OKAY.

BASICALLY I AM EXPECTING KOUSHIRO TO DIE.

Though of course he will get better. 

Though I also have a wild theory that you will parallel Otae and Koushiro by having them both watch their brothers get killed.

WHAT IS THE REVEAL? Something to do with how Fate was created? Are we going to see that? Was Makoto involved?

Is Koushiro going to get a fabulous hairdo ala “Steven and the Stevens”?

So many important questions. OKAY LET’S DIG IN.

1. “The end of all things”

WHAT A TITLE. I MEAN, WHAT CAN I EVEN SAY ABOUT THAT.

2. “I did nothing wrong, Hikari-san.”

Fate, is that you?? My favorite villain?? Also LOL, “nothing wrong,” you TWAT.

3. YES IT IS FATE. MUAHAHAHA.

4. “You’re not really that logical. There’s a lot of pain in you. And anger.”

Hikari is so perceptive and brave!

5. FATE IS PUNISHING KOUSHIRO?? BECAUSE HE INFECTED FATE WITH GLITCHES OF BEING ABLE TO FEEL EMOTIONS??

AAAAAHHHH AW MAN.

6. OMG I love Hikari being so logical about how Koushiro is the brain and absolutely integral to the team, while Fate is being such an emotional mess about this.

This mysterious conversation is giving me lots of Utena vibes and Fate is like Dios.

7. Okay wait. The person Fate is talking to is NOT Hikari? That finally clicked in my brain. I assumed it was like a Dream Version of Hikari. Um.

8. The mysterious wise Hikari-like person just said that Love is Eternal, awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

9. “You’re just a simulation of her that I created!”

I am suddenly reminded of Sirelo’s Ex Machina fanfic. HIKARI THE ROBOT STRIKES AGAIN.

10. “In the end, you are a part of me, just like those other two!”

The other two?? Are the other two Koushiro and Makoto?

11. The story of the Shepherd Boy STRIKES AGAIN.

12. BACK TO YOSHIE YAY!

This made me emotional.

14. Yoshie isn’t shocked at all by Motimon’s assessment of Koushiro’s personality, and she even talked to Masami about it! It’s amazing how similar she and her son are!

So now that I've read something much more interesting, tri 5.3.

- I forgot that Yggdrasil was a thing in tri. The kids figure that Meikuumon was designed by Yggdrasil to eliminate humans and switch digimon into kill mode, and that Homeostasis was out to eliminate Meikuumon to prevent that.

- I honestly dislike that Agumon being hungry all the time is his only defining trait now.

- Filler with a ghost story scene. Ugh. This series has so much fluff.

- Okay but if they're staying at school overnight, where do they sleep?

- This is the only decent thing in this entire money-pandering travesty: 

- Taichi and Meiko talk and I am so bored that I stopped midway to go hit up tumblr again. I envy loreweaver getting to liveblog SU because at least *that's* interesting.

- Taichi goes off and Agumon talks to Meiko. And in both the conversation above and this one, the other digimon watch and talk about whether they should tattle to their respective partners. *Why*?

- Welp apparently they're all sleeping sitting down. My back sympathizes.

- Meikuumon returns and Meiko promptly pulls the self-blame game for being a terrible partner, blah blah blah. Pause to find my eyes, which rolled so hard they popped right out.

- And battle time. I think I mentioned before that one of the few things I liked was the use of other writing systems during the shinka sequence.

it’s finals week so obviously i marathoned the adv/02 movies at two am with my roommate last night (except for movie three because we fell asleep) and we had some thoughts

y’all if the pilot movie took place four years before canon and taichi is in fifth grade (so age ten/eleven) in canon, that means movie taichi is in FIRST GRADE and could be as young as six wtf he’s younger than takeru is in adventure

i’m convinced they had no idea how old hikari was at this point. i may not exactly be a child development expert but i’m pretty sure four-year-olds don’t go in high chairs. and aren’t that tiny. 

it’s important to me that taichi has been Done since he was in first grade

unless homeostasis is lying in adventure, we know taichi and hikari are canonically the chosen that were picked first and everyone else was picked because they had stuff in common with them. but consider that taichi and hikari evolved that agumon without a digivice and that’s probably why it was so weird and massive without some kind of regulatory influence

and you know that it wasn’t just hikari’s spooky bullshittery given that taichi is assigned an AGUMON by homeostasis like that’s no coincidence

(it’s also important for me to note that my phone recognizes bullshittery as a word now)

worth noting is that unlike in tri omegamon gets beaten but doesn't break up, so it's definitely an issue with taichi in tri and not that omegamon ran out of gas

Taiki has apparently won the ire of just about every kid that does kendo, because he’s managed to pick up yet another rival. Said rival is being trained by a Kotemon, but unlike usual, Kotemon isn’t taking advantage of the kid. So why’s he acting weird...?

all the attacks in this show are so brutal. it's a little bit surprising.

so the middle schooler training with Kotemon is named Musashi, and the university's strongest is named Kojirou. well that means that those two are definitely going to fight.

who needs the setting sun when you have a Digimon augmenting your abilities

except Kotemon didn't know that Musashi was street attacking, so, was it a different Digimon or something that was making him faster and stronger?
