hi there, the delusional anon again lol I'm really lighting candles hoping we can finally get the deleted scenes 🕯️
I really wanted to see Louis shooting Lestat and the whole scene they filmed with the first makeup, just out of curiosity. The Trial™, and the scene with louis in the church, killing the priest
and TC as the marquis is GENIUS !!!!!! The tvshow has already made so many references, I would like other actors to appear even for a second! Even the young fop actor (btw did you saw his interview on youtube with a fan?); and jokes aside, I have a lot of fun whenever someone says they would like to see Nicole Kidman in the show as Gabrielle, it's kind evil tbh BUT yet would be cool
I've already spent HOURS on your blog just looking at the deleted scenes, I don't understand why Warner Bros just doesn't release it
anyways, THANK YOU! love your blog 💕
I've already spent HOURS on your blog just looking at the deleted scenes, I don't understand why Warner Bros just doesn't release it anyways, THANK YOU! love your blog 💕
Aww thank you! 😍 That means a lot. I collected this stuff for ppl to enjoy, if Tumblr ever goes down and we lose this archive, I'll definitely be sad. It's too large for me to download 😂 So definitely save stuff for yourself.
Light your candles, Anon 🕯️, but don't hold your breath. Truly, if we were going to get deleted scenes from the '94 movie, the golden opportunities (the 10th and 20th anniversaries 😂) for that have passed. This year will be the 30th, can you believe it?? If anyone is connected to the powers that be, TELL PPL WE WANT THIS STUFF. I'm sure it exists somewhere.
I think those cut scenes could have been great, but I suspect, other than being cut for time, there were good reasons to cut them from a writing perspective.
They may have been too cheesy for what the movie was going for?
Or they might have slowed down the action or detracted from the story?
--- Louis doesn't shoot Lestat that night in the book; Lestat gets shot at the Theatre de Vampires (before it's called that) in the Vampire Lestat, so it's possible that it was filmed, and then cut from the IWTV '94 movie with the intention to include it properly in the sequel TVL (not that Lestat can't get shot twice! but still! Getting shot on stage in front of an audience rather than in a bedroom with no other witnesses is, debatably, more shocking).
I felt like there was a somewhat feverish pace with Lestat coming to Louis at his bedside, that scene went by pretty quickly, it made it more vibrant and precious. In the book, Louis had been in poor health and then ppl had bled him to try to "cure him of his madness," so Lestat really didn't have the luxury of waiting too much longer to turn him; Louis could have died 😭. And maybe the whole Louis-shooting-Lestat might've killed the mood Lestat was aiming for, which was seductively offering Louis the Dark Gift. Shooting Lestat might've been more than a little off-putting in that moment 😂 Do you really want to turn someone into your immortal companion after they've JUST SHOT YOU? It might not kill Lestat, but it would still hurt!
Tumblr media
[^X]
I mean I LOVE Tom!Lestat, and this is one of the few BTS pics we have of the Trial scene (you can see the theatre crypts behind him 😭)... it's charming to me bc I love that movie, but it might have been cut bc in a way it's more painful to excise the whole trial. Like barely seeing the shark in JAWS. With no trial, it would mean that Louis and Claudia had absolutely no chance; it was all up to Santiago's (or Armand's) whim 😭 Lestat wasn't even there to try to advocate for either Louis or Claudia (or maybe he WAS there, but locked in a cell somewhere and unable to help them!).
Tumblr media
and TC as the marquis is GENIUS !!!!!!
Right?? That could be amazing.
The tvshow has already made so many references, I would like other actors to appear even for a second!
I haven't heard of that happening... don't hold your breath there, either, I think they would have done it already if they intended to do so. My guess is that AMC really wants to do their own thing apart from the 1994 movie (other than rewriting a few scenes), so I don't think there will be any cameos in the future, but maybe I'm wrong!
Even the young fop actor (btw did you saw his interview on youtube with a fan?);
I didn't see the video, but I met that actor, Lee Scharfstein, IRL in NOLA in 2022, he was lovely!
and jokes aside, I have a lot of fun whenever someone says they would like to see Nicole Kidman in the show as Gabrielle, it's kind evil tbh BUT yet would be cool
That is kind of evil haha but Nicole has been a favorite of fanartists and roleplayers for years, that's not a hot take. If I had to choose Tom as the Marquis OR Nicole as Gabs... bc putting them together would be A LOT to ask... I think I'd prefer Tom, because of the deliciousness of having him play his own father... but we have a better chance of getting Nicole so I would LOOOOVE to have her as Gabs paired w/ Timothy Omundson as the Marquis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh and BTW since you've read this far, I accepted the headcanon that the Marquis' name was Valere de Lioncourt, as per the legendary @gairid/ @vampchronfic 😭💕

Shit. In his agitation, it hadn't clicked in Matt's head he had given Sleipnir his spare key after he had gotten the flu and was too sick to get out of bed. The help had been gratefully appreciated but he hadn’t thought of the consequences at the time of handing the key, especially when he hadn’t explained about his night time extracurricular activities. He had forgotten in the throes of his fever and now Sleip stood over him, clearly not pleased about his current state.
"Ugh..." Matthew blinked several times, his head snapping around to look up in the other's general direction. “I promise it’s not as bad as it looks.” It was time to go digging through the archive of excuses he had used to explain away the bruises over the years before settling on an oldy but a goody.
“I fell down the stairs in the hall yesterday.” It was something he had on more than one occasion as a child after first losing his sight. More than plausible for it to happen as an adult. Falling onto a fire escape while leaping between buildings, not so much. “It's not as bad as it looks...at least, I'm guessing I must look bad."

Mix your aesthetics.
Listen to The Killers or Queen or Foo Fighters whilst annotating Shakespeare. Drink coco-cola out of a wine glass. Wear those black spikey punk heels to an art gallery. Wear smudged eyeliner and red lipstick but keep your hands perfectly manicured. Rock out to classical composers whilst you spead along the coast.
Mix your aesthetics. We don’t have to be one thing. We contain multitudes.

Hi Esotheria, as suggested by Goat, I wonder if you can help me finding antique knickknack deco to put on bookshelves of my Elder Sims? :)
Hello, friend of Goat! ^^ You opened quite the Pandora box with this ask, lemme tell you! xD There’s just SO MUCH good clutter to be found all across the web; listing each individual piece would take me months! So in that name, I’ll be mostly listing general sites and blogs where I download my clutter from, with only the occasional recommendation for specific pieces of cc. I trust that you’ll do the ‘hard’ but enjoyable job of browsing through those recommended sites. ;)
- First and foremost: Garden of Shadows. Obvious one, I know, but I can’t stress enough just how many terabytes of cc gems the forum contains! From the Antiques and Oddities section to Monthly themes, events, and gift exchanges, GoS is the go-to resource if you want weird and wonderful cc, clutter included. Even if you think you’ve browsed it all and know everything the forum has to offer, revisiting some classics (e.g. Advent 2012) with fresh eyes might put you in the way of awesome clutter that you missed the first time around!
Tumblr media
- Another obvious one: The PlumbBob Keep. Like GoS, it’s a HUGE forum with tons of hidden treasures, so definitely worth taking a look at. These fine porcelain plates, for example, look like something an elderly sim with a refined taste would display on their shelf! The forum also has a Conversions sections that’s worth checking out, because...
Tumblr media
- ...conversions from other games like Bioshock, Skyrim, TSM, Dragon Age, etc. are a great way to get your hands on unique clutter! Some of my go-to object converters include Yolartut, Delonariel, Veranka, Hafiseazale, Amovitam, Mistyfluff, and Kativip. The last is an individual creator, but also the name of a whole forum that shares super-cool conversions, among many other things. I understand that most of the preview pics on Kativip’s site are sadly busted these days, but don’t let it discourage you! The site is absolutely worth digging through, even blindly.
- If you want clutter that’s shabby chic, old-timey but still contemporary in essence, SimPearls is a good place to look. The forum requires registration to be able to download from, but a number of resident SimPearls creators (e.g. Kim, Amythestfenix, Deatherella, Betsy4arts) also have personal blogs that you can check out!
- An oldie but goldie, Parsimonious features tons of great stuff that holds up incredibly well despite its age. Their creations are sorted in sets by room rather than by type of object, but there’s clean previews for each included piece, so browsing around should be a breeze!
- A more recent(ish) creator, MrsReval has many, many droolworthy object conversions. How about this cool pipe for your elders’ shelves, or these fancy figurines?
Tumblr media
- Pocci/Gardenbreeze is a somewhat forgotten creator with a limited, if nice selection of quality cc. Their Roses Mini Set is a personal fave I can’t seem to play without, and then there’s also these sunflowers in a vase and these dainty deco birds that I’m submitting for your consideration.
Tumblr media
- Speaking of forgotten creators: make sure to not miss out on HolySimoly, Adele, Om/Avalon, and Ogulama: all dead sites that have been archived courtesy of Liquid Sims. (*Protip: if you ever run across a creator who has disappeared and/or deleted their stuff, @sims2packrat likely has backups!)
Tumblr media
- Riekus13‘s Tumblr is an absolute must for top-tier cc recolors! I don’t think there’s a cc object in existence that Riekus hasn’t recolored at some point, so their download archive doubles as a cc catalogue in its own right!
- Moxxa is a retired creator who shared many gorgeous converted object sets back in the day. Note that her cc style is mostly modern/contemporary, but maybe you can still find something nice for your elders’ shelves. How about this decorative model plane, for example?
- Someone else you might wanna check out is Beautifulnerdkitty. Like Moxxa, their cc is predominantly modern, but it’s so gorgeous and well done that it’d be a shame not to mention them!
- Pixelry is another member of the ‘gorgeous hq cc that’s not strictly antique but absolutely worth the effort‘ gang. Their original Tumblr got deleted and the link I’ve given only contains a small fraction of all the stuff they’ve shard over the years, so make sure to also check out their Old CC archive and SFS backup folder. (*Note: The Archive is on SimPearls so might require registration).
- Finally, a useful tip: sometimes, the best way to find good clutter is to rip it straight outta the games of other people via lot downloads! ;) I can’t even begin to tell you just how many unique pieces I’ve gotten just by plucking JodelieJodelie’s furnished lots; and you can do the same with any creator whose style you like!
I feel like there’s a ton of creators I’m forgetting to mention, but I believe there’s enough material here to keep you busy for a while. ;) Have fun downloading! ^^

I'm gonna brainstorm a bit here. I've had this idea a handful of times over the last couple years, but it never really stuck as more than a passing 'oh that would be neat' idea. But it came up in my brain again today and I spent most of my work day mulling it over. And I figured it would be worth putting out there to see if anyone else had thoughts/ideas about it.
I've been thinking of putting together a Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons fanfic feature blog. And I don't mean MY fic, I have my personal blog for that, but All fanfic in the fandom
I haven't seen anything like that around, but I also haven't really looked. Has anything like that been done before?
I'm thinking it would in part be Authors submitting links to their fics, readers and fans submitting favorites of theirs, themed or possibly random selection features of fics from AO3. I'd even consider opening up a Request/Prompt feature.
I think for my sanity's sake, I'd stick with only looking for fic on AO3 and what shows up in the tags on tumblr.
But then there are several potential problems. What if an AO3 author doesn't want their fics linked out to tumblr? There's no direct message system on AO3 to contact them beforehand. What about the probable, inevitable fandom drama? I don't want to play fandom police, I'm pretty chill on the whole 'write what you want' train, but also if I pick fic based on my personal preferences alone, there is going to be a lot missed. I don't want feelings to get hurt because I personally didn't care for a fic someone wrote, so I didn't put it on the blog. Do I want to moderate the submissions/content? Should I include NSFW fic in my links, create a separate tag/blog for those? Or should I just free for all down the AO3 page and share everything?
Do I want to write a little rec/blurb for every fic? Or just share the basic information?
And we all know how much this website LOVES posts with links in them and putting them in the tags, so would anyone else even See the blog in the first place? I'm not doing this for a personal fic collection, that's what my bookmarks are for, I just want a place to feature/showcase the incredible fic this fandom puts out.
And now I'm thinking about it, and thinking about how much work it would be to keep up, and I'm wondering if I wouldn't even keep up with the blog after the first few weeks. Setting up a queue wouldn't be too difficult, but it would still be something I would spend time on that I might, in a month or two, decide I'd rather spend elsewhere.
This has all mostly just been a long, rambling brainstorm, to help me get my thoughts out. But also I'm genuinely interested in hearing what anyone else has to say. Is there any interest in the fandom for this kind of blog? I think we're small enough, that it could be feasible to keep up with new stuff on a semi-regular basis, as well as dig into the archives and find some golden oldies. And I think it could be a really nice thing to have, but ya know, maybe I'm being a bit idealistic.
Thoughts? Anyone?

Do you know where I can find nsfw gendrya fan art?
Step into my solar…
Here’s what I could dig up, mostly from the archives over at @aryastarkart, but @gendryafanart is a good resource, too. Most are pretty tame considering how straight up Horny On Main 24/7 these two have proven to be together on the show, but hopefully some fit what you’re looking for. If anyone out there knows some good ones I’m missing, feel free to add on.
Also, more glorious art of this ship (nsfw or otherwise) is always welcome, you talented fanartists! The Gendrya fandom is almost as thirsty as Arya and Gendry are for each other. It won’t go unappreciated!
Okay first, we’ve got some oldie but goodie throwbacks from:
@zoklarina: (x), (x), (x)
@aqvarelles: (x)
tubbie11: (x)
@sabotensan: (x), (x), (x)
@jaimesstump: (x), (x)
As well as some newer entries celebrating #FORGESEX from:
@aleson-sa: (x)
@soddingcloudgazer: (x)
@shipsnthenight: (x)
@nalustrepalustre: (x)
Some recent AU goodness from:
@mitzpitz09: (x)
@aritou-stuff: (x)
And this steamy Gendrya comic by:

Enjoy!

Fic Back Friday
Make a post recommending a fic you love from at least a year ago. Dust off the archives, dig through your AO3 history and share those old fics with newer fans who might not have seen them - and the fans who’ve been around forever and might want to revisit an old fave.
Reblog art, edits, and gifsets from seasons past. Dig out those hold headcanon and meta posts and bring them back. What were the popular fan theories? What was everyone writing fic about 2 years ago? Five? Go comment on an old fanvid that got you right in the feels. Queue up that OTP playlist and break out the tissues.
So, I thought this might be a fun thing for the GG fandom to do while all of us are on lockdown!
Here’s my fic recommendation, posted April of last year.
for a moment we were strangers by openhearts .
I think this was one of the first fics I ever read after starting GG and discovering AO3.
Domestic, fluffy, mildly angsty, smutty goodness! Basically, it has it all haha.
The author also has 2 other Good Girls fics posted, so make sure to check those out as well!
If you have recs you want to add, please do! I’d love to see everyone else’s oldies but goodies!

Hellooo Tumblr! Is anyone still around here?
I know everyone is pretty much on Instagram or Twitter (including myself), but I can’t really seem to delete my tumblr… too many years of personal process are neatly archived in this space. Maybe one day I’ll dig up some oldies and re-share them with you...
But anyway, for the sake of keeping this space ‘alive’, I’ll update you with a new mini personal piece. I’ve recently compiled a playlist of Venezuelan music and/or music by Venezuelans, and did this illustration as a cover for it. It’s a small way of paying homage to national talent, and to practice my painting.
You can listen to it all here.
I enjoy these songs for many reasons. I’ll share five of them (representative each of a genre):
youtube
Soledad Bravo - Polo Margariteño  Folklore Soledad Bravo is a big traditional staple in Venezuelan folkloric music. Her voice roars and cracks with emotion, and the only things that go alongside it is a guitar and a cuatro (a Venezuelan 4-string guitar). When I listen to this I see the beach, the house I grew up in, every gathering with my family, every road trip.
youtube
La Chica - Oasis Experimental / Electronic French/Venezuelan La Chica masterfully creates a unique mood in this piece, combining electronic beats with piano and her ethereal voice. It heavily features nature: a bird, the sky, the sea. Like the first youtube comment says, “the only problem with this song is that it ends too fast.”
youtube
Canserbero - Jeremias 17:15 Rap Normally I’m not really into rap except for some exceptions, and this is one of them. “I feel like a lunatic trying to trust in someone even now, in the planet of hypocrisy”. The whole song is a direct critique on the hateful regime that’s been controlling Venezuela for the past 20 years. it’s crude, hateful and violent, just like our political situation.
youtube
maye - Moody Pop A recent find, maye is set out to become a big pop force. She’s only released three singles so far, all infused with old-school 60s magic. This one though is so bouncy and catchy - a happy and sexy one, with a playful piano and a silky voice that grab you from beginning to end.
youtube
Viniloversus - Juega bien tus cartas Rock There’s another and more recent song from Viniloversus in the playlist, but I also had to include this one because of nostalgic reasons (I listened to it loads as an angsty teenager), and because I still feel a bit of that electricity during the guitar solo. I used to think it was a song about a failed relationship, but now I think it might actually be a song about a failed country...

♥♥♥ Carbonated Blood ♥♥♥
(ノ°∀°)ノ’.:*・°☆
Inspired by recent interest in this blog, and for ppl newly landing on it, I made this pinned post as a welcome, a warning, and some tags I would recommend that are specific to my blog for my favorite stuff. Here's why it's called i-want-my-IWTV.
🤘 A welcome: I'm Burnadette (21+) and this blog is an unofficial Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles appreciation blog started in July 2013, but it's not an authoritative resource, I'm just collecting fanworks and other dash goodies based on my own rubric, sprinkling catnip out to the fandom, and answering asks for ppl who are curious about my opinions on things. I encourage positivity and optimism! ✨
My AO3: Burnadette_dpdl
Co-mod @wicked-felina and I typically run the @vcsecretgifts exchange, you can check out the archive there. We had to take a 2 yr hiatus for real life reasons, we hope to revive it in 2024 💕 In the meantime, go check out @vamptember (@hekateinhell and @monstersinthecosmos), for a wealth of VC fanworks!
⚠️ A warning: You may encounter things you dislike on this blog, such as ship art of ships you dislike, discussions about dark fiction, problematic characters, and other such topics. My free time for fandom is limited and I do this for free for my own entertainment, so I don't engage in bad faith discussion, and I'm generally picky about engaging* in all discussion posts or personal posts.
You may have noticed that I don't post/reblog much about it if I can help it: While I do not like the current IWTV AMC 2022 adaptation, I can talk about it, and I do appreciate that it's brought fresh blood 🩸 into the fandom, a lot of talented fanart and writing! And yes, ppl can enjoy IWTV '22 and other adaptations and canon and absolutely whatever 🤝, these things are not mutually exclusive 😎 (I tag it #iwtv 2022 and #iwtv amc if ppl need to block those tags.) With that said, I think there are some fabulous ppl who can embrace it all, like @xxhellonursexx! There are role models like Nurse, able to venn diagram the VC content with a sense of humor and respect.
So I welcome new fans, and encourage them to ask questions and engage with ppl like me, there is limitless room for everyone.
ANYWAY.
Behold, my STUFF: Some of my favorite tags in no particular order, this may evolve over time:
(Cut for length)
Lin, get in here and settle this - (Not a tag but this is my 20 second magnum opus 😎✨)
vampire physiology - Both about Ricean and other vampire media, studying them like lab animals and talking about it!
Fandom laws - Fandom's been around a long time, and I think a big part of having a great experience in it is mutual respect, which ppl have codified in fandom laws. When/if you break them, you may turn other ppl off and that can spread quickly; you build your reputation by your actions.
digging up an oldie from the archive - when I need to throw an older post on the dash to share again, maybe there's a reason, or a great addition.
hello dinner - Various amusement about vampires and their dinner.
messy eater - Related to the above, it's less common (canonically) for a Ricean vampire to spill a drop of blood, so it used to be more dramatic when we'd see art/fic of spillage! There are vampires from outside VC in that tag, too, I couldn't resist reblogging them.
vampiredevelopment/interviews and rec - this is some of my favorite textmeme content 😂
memeything - y'know, memes, some are embedded in more serious posts, but I think when I first heard the word "meme" I didn't think mine really counted? So I made it "memeything" so as not to land in a "meme" tag if they didn't count, but eventually I decided that "meme" can be pretty widely defined, so mine kinda do, but by that point I was far into the habit of using my own word, so there it is.
how to make a post a vc post - when you just gotta insert your fandom into an unrelated post bc it FITS.
VC fandom hunters - when you're looking for other VC fandom ppl to role play with, etc.!
Lestatiquette - Lestat ettiquette.
Lestatuesque - Someone/something is acting like Lestat.
Lestats closet - Something you might find in Lestat's closet, a resource for fanartists/writers looking for inspo 🙏
Its a coffin - fanart and works involving coffins!
We appreciate and love Louis in this house - There was a wave of sentiment criticizing Louis for various reasons and these are thoughtful responses to that criticism. Tag started by the magnificent @covenofthearticulate/@theballadofmrslovett (go check out her ideas, and her AO3 covenofthearticulate, she is so so good 💞)
Defending Antonio - There's periodic discussion about Antonio Banderas as Armand in the '94 IWTV movie, I love him, and I'm totally rational about it
Louis has canon hair I know that will make at least 2 ppl I know very happy - and idk if I would even reveal privately who they are but definitely not publicly! I don't want to put them on blast! 😅 I appreciate Louis with different hairstyles and I've debated about it enough that like... I can appreciate Options but some ppl would prefer to see his hair as it's described in canon 😙
VC wedding hysteria - What it says on the tin.
iwantmyiwtv has opinions - a way to signal that these are my opinions only and not presented as fact.
Iwantmyiwtv rp - I sometimes take asks for Lestat or Louis to help inspire my fanfic. Specify who you're asking and they might respond 😎, Lestat response starts with ♛, and Louis with ♠.
vc news/vc casting - For sharing news and post casting ideas, as there are multiple adaptations and there's always fantasy casting! It never ends.
not vc/vc adjacent - I see some ppl have adopted these two! I made these out of a kind of purist approach, I wanted to reblog smtg and share it but it wasn't exactly VC, soooo, it's my acknowledgment accordingly.
VC - I may have used this in the past but I don't anymore, bc there are tons of things that could have that abbreviation, I assume, so I don't find it too be descriptive enough for use as a Vampire Chronicles tag 🤷🏼‍♀️
*You may see older posts that were written in a bubblier/sassier manner than I'd be comfortable with now, but I find those to be charming now, it's a 10+ yr old blog, after all! Our internet experience has evolved. What's cringe or even rude now was normal then and I know that my intention was always positivity and anti-censorship, so that includes not censoring myself. ✨ I ask that you have patience with those responses that may not have aged well as you have patience with an artist or writer's earlier works, or your own growth over the years! 🌱

15 Absolute Must-Reads for Women Working in Tech
Let’s face it, ladies. The tech industry has been a boy’s club for far too long.
But times are a-changin’!
Even though women have a long history in the industry, it’s taken decades to get a seat at the table. Today we’re developers, team leads, and CEOs. Of course, there are still miles to go in the march for equality. But with women around the world raising their voices to make tech companies more inclusive, it’s hard not to get just a teensy bit excited for the next generation of female go-getters.
If you want to be a part of this positive change — and help other women succeed alongside you — you’ll need a game plan.
We’ve got you covered.
Looking beyond Sheryl Sandburg’s Lean In (required reading for aspiring women in any field), we’ve rounded up 10 must-read books, blogs, and more for women in tech. Add these to your reading list (or blog feed) for a dose of tech news, opinions, career and leadership advice, and solidarity from women like you.
Related: The State of Women in Tech
15 Must-Reads for Women in Tech
1. Innovating Women: The Changing Face of Technology
“Where are all the women?”
This is the question technology and entrepreneurship researcher Vivek Wadhwa considered at the TechCrunch Crunchies Awards in 2009 — at the nudging of his wife, Tavinder, who was the first of the two to notice a deep gender gap at the Oscars of the tech world.
Inspired by that experience, Wadhwa joined forces with journalist Farai Chideya and set out to take a look at women in tech (and the lack thereof), the challenges they face, and why they are needed in the field in their book, Innovating Women.
Yeah, our first women-in-tech book recommendation originated with a man. But don’t worry!
Acknowledging that he wasn’t exactly qualified to speak from the heart on this issue (and wanting to avoid mansplaining), he crowdsourced funding and worked with female contributors, ranging from former Google VP Megan Smith to venture capitalists to startup CEOs to middle managers.
A collection of stories, interviews, and essays from hundreds of leaders around the world in STEM careers, the book shares the experiences of various women in technology and entrepreneurship. It’s also a book about innovation and an exploration of the most creative (female) minds in the field. It shows what women are doing to close the gender gap in the field, what contributions women are making in their fields, offers encouragement and advice to women who want to enter and succeed in tech, and shares how women tackle an unbalanced work environment.
It’s a great read if you’re looking for a feel-good book that shares inspiring stories and ideas.
2. Girl Code: Unlocking the Secrets to Success, Sanity, and Happiness for the Female Entrepreneur
If you’re a lady with an entrepreneurial itch, Girl Code is your book, whether you want to build a side hustle or the next social media empire.
But don’t read for advice on how to start up a startup or how to create and run your business — author Cara Alwill Leyba digs a little deeper into the foundations of what makes a good entrepreneur, and specifically, a good and successful female entrepreneur. She takes a look at how to build confidence, brush yourself off after failure, ignore the haters, and avoid jealousy of other people’s success.
Central to her book is the importance of women supporting other women in their goals and entrepreneurial endeavors.
“In today’s competitive marketplace, the fiercest thing a female entrepreneur can do is to support other women,” Leyba asserts.
The ultimate girl-power guide for entrepreneurs written with a “girlfriend-to-girlfriend” voice, Girl Code is full of helpful advice and support for your entrepreneurial endeavors.

3. The Glass Universe: How the Ladies of the Harvard Observatory Took Measure of the Stars
You’ve probably seen (or read) Hidden Figures, the story of the Black women who worked as “computers” for NASA, running the math that powered the first rocket launches that sent astronauts to the moon.
The Glass Universe runs in a similar vein: think ladies, space, science, and an unhealthy dose of gender bias. Author Dava Sobel highlights the sadly unknown and under-appreciated role of women in the history of science by exploring the lives and legacies of women who worked in the Harvard College Observatory in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
These students — math whizzes, astronomy buffs, physics majors — were among the few women at the time to have the opportunity to work in science and technology. Their contributions included groundbreaking work in studying, documenting, and photographing the stars in the night sky and lead to the creation of the first academic fellowships and research grants for women in the sciences.
The struggles of these women in a male-dominated field — much more lopsided than it is today — will feel familiar. But more than that, this book will make you immensely grateful for all the brave women who paved the way for your generation and mine.
4. Hardball for Women: Winning at the Game of Business
Hardball for Women is a classic — an oldie-but-goodie updated, as the newest edition boasts, for the “post-Lean In era.” This book asserts that women are not men — duh — and the rules and tactics that help a man get ahead may, sadly, be detrimental to a woman, thanks to subconscious gender biases.
For example, an assertive man may be rewarded, while an assertive woman may be considered lacking in social skills. Because advice given to and by men may not always be helpful to a woman looking to advance in her career, author Tammy Hughes tailors leadership guidance specifically for women.
While not specifically focused on technology fields, Hardball is written for women who work in male-dominated careers — or, at least, a male-dominated office. The author coaches women who want to get ahead in their careers and develop leadership skills to be aware of gender biases and how men and women behave differently in the workplace, and how to use that information to their advantage. Hughes aims to help women promote themselves and use language, verbal and nonverbal to be assertive and effective in communicating.
Overall, this book looks at the challenges men and women face in working with each other and how they can work together to create a balanced workplace culture.
5. SheGeeks.net
Tech entrepreneur and writer Corvida Raven started blogging as a 19-year-old college student and has since drawn attention (and awards) to her blog, SheGeeks.net. She’s known for blogging about social media, tech gadgets, and more — and for her trademark style of writing about tech in “plain English,” which she says draws on her days helping family members with computer problems.
For an introduction to her style and ethos, check out her post about inclusion in technology and browse around her Instagram and Twitter accounts. In 2009 Raven was named one of the 50 Most Influential Women in Technology, and she’s worked in social media and more with General Motors, FastCompany, and TED.
Check out SheGeeks for no-nonsense reviews of new technology, social media how-tos to beef up your online presence, and for easy-to-read articles you can forward to your non-techie friends (and hopefully help another woman spark interest in the field).

6. Women of Silicon Valley
Inspired by the on-the-street photos and meaningful interview snippets of Humans of New York, college student Lea Coligado set out to find the female powerbrokers of Silicon Valley.
On “Women of Silicon Valley,” hosted on both Medium and Facebook, Coligado interviews women professionals in technology, uncovering surprising anecdotes and advice — and sometimes showcasing the good, the bad, and the ugly of the real world of women in tech.
For example: Pinterest’s Tracy Chou described facing “blatant sexism . . . so outright as to be comical,” while Sara Mauskopf of Postmates described becoming the first woman at her company to have a baby: “Now that I’m pregnant, I am more driven than ever to make something of myself, if for no other reason than to prove it can be done . . . working with such awesome and supportive colleagues definitely makes my ‘trailblazing’ easier and enjoyable.”
Quick-to-read Q&A profiles are posted regularly, so be sure to look through the archives and give Women of Silicon Valley a follow — and maybe submit a friend for consideration to be featured on the blog.
7. Women in Tech: Take Your Career to the Next Level with Practical Advice and Inspiring Stories
This book starts readers off with a sad statistic: in 1984, 38 percent of computer science degrees were awarded to women. Not too shabby for the “olden days.”
But fast forward to 2010, and that number dropped to 10 percent. While other fields like law and medicine are attracting more women, the tech field, says author Tarah Wheeler Van Vlack, is failing. She blames (spoiler alert) a cultural unconscious gender bias, and sets out to do her part to make the tech industry more appealing and less mysterious for women.
Women in Tech combines practical career advice and personal stories from female entrepreneurs and tech professionals to motivate, inspire, and show women what a career in the field is like and how to succeed in it. Guest writers include Brianna Wu of Giant Spacekat and Angie Chang of Women 2.0 (another women-in-tech blog worth a follow).
Geared toward women who are considering jumping into tech, this book is a great read if you are just launching your career, or if you are looking for a boost further up the career ladder. Or you may want to get a few copies of this book to pass on to your mentees or women you want to encourage into the field. Bonus: this book started off on a Kickstarter campaign — it doesn’t get too much geekier than that!
8. The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage
Did you know that the world’s first coder was a woman?
Ada Lovelace, born in 1815, was the only legitimate daughter of the poet Lord Byron — and one of the first computer scientists. Her mother, determined to make sure Ada never became a head-in-the-clouds poet like her father, had her tutored solely and extensively in science and math.
At age 17, Lovelace teamed up with Charles Babbage and envisioned a machine that can calculate and envision anything — numbers, music, words — and she even wrote a sample computer program for it. While the machine was never built, her notes were referenced by engineers creating the first computer.
In The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage, author Sydney Padua turns Lovelace’s story into an exciting graphic novel that’s mostly accurate — well, other than envisioning an alternate ending in which the duo succeed in building their computer, which never actually happened.
This steampunk-esque novel is an adventure through the early history of modern tech — and while it takes liberties with reality (ahem), it’s filled with notes that keep you grounded in the “real” history.
Interested in a more straightforward history featuring the pioneering work of Lovelace? Walter Issacson’s The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution frames a history of the tech world with Lovelace’s story, tracing its influence to the present day.
9. Tech Diversity Files
As a woman, do you ever feel a bit out of place in so-called “tech culture”? Tech Diversity Files is a blog about inclusivity in tech hosted on Medium with a handful of contributors, all looking to expand the vision of a programmer or coder as a twenty-something white male living off Hot Pockets and foosball.
Women in the tech field might start with this article by entrepreneur, professor, and developer Rachel Thomas. The gender disparity in tech is not, she argues, a pipeline problem, but because it’s a field that can be genuinely hostile to women who make it there. She describes how she fell in love with programming — but not with “tech culture,” so much that she considered leaving the field, which “would have been devastating, but staying was tough.”
Thomas continues: “I’m not the stereotypical male programmer in his early 20s looking to ‘work hard, play hard.’ I do work hard, but I’d rather wake up early than stay up late, and I was already thinking ahead to when my husband and I would need to coordinate our schedules with daycare drop-offs and pick-ups.”
“Kegerators and ping pong tables don’t appeal to me. I’m not aggressive enough to thrive in a combative work environment. Talking to other female friends working in tech, I know that I’m not alone in my frustrations,” Thomas says.
Check out Thomas’s article for stats, problems, and solutions for both men and women to help close the gap — and make sure to poke around and follow the rest of Tech Diversity Files for conversation and stories about inclusivity in tech.

10. Recode.net
Where do you go for the latest in tech news? Mashable, Gizmodo, and Wired are great sources — and regularly tackle issues of gender and inclusivity in the field, and they feature female writers and bloggers.
But if you haven’t already, add Recode.net to your list.
While not specifically geared just for women, its founder and executive editor, Kara Swisher, is a powerhouse woman in the tech world. Swisher is a longtime tech journalist who previously wrote articles and a tech column for the Wall Street Journal. After leaving the Wall Street Journal, Swisher founded Recode as a source for tech news.
She’s the tech writer most followed by other US techies, so adding her work to your regular reading list would put you in good company.  And while not technically the written word, don’t forget to check out Swisher’s podcast, Recode Decode, for more news, interviews, and discussion.
11. Reset: My Fight for Inclusion and Lasting Change
In 2012, Tawainese-American investor and activist Ellen Pao sued Kleiner Perkins, the then-leading Silicon Valley venture capital firm, in a gender discrimination lawsuit. In the lawsuit, she called out her former employer for workplace discrimination and retaliation against women and other minority groups. Pao tells her powerful story in Reset: My Fight for Inclusion and Lasting Change, shining a light on the homogeneity issues in the tech industry.
As the former interim CEO of Reddit, Pao is also credited for forcefully trying to change the company’s status quo, banning revenge porn and unauthorized nude photos on the social platform and shutting down parts of Reddit over online harassment.
Not only that, Pao helped found Project Include, an award-winning nonprofit aimed at promoting more diversity and inclusion in tech. Named “the face of change” by Time magazine, Pao is an author to follow if you want ideas on how to build a more inclusive future in Silicon Valley (and beyond).

12. Pivot: The Only Move That Matters is Your Next One
If you’re thinking about taking on a new role at your company or maybe even considering an entirely different career path, pick up Jenny Blake’s Pivot: The Only Move That Matters Is Your Next One.
A former career development program manager at Google, Blake uses the Pivot Method to show you how to find new opportunities and use what’s already working for you to guide your next career move.
Want to eventually be your own boss? This book will guide you in transitioning from your current gig to a new, more adventurous opportunity — as long as you’re willing to pivot.
Winner of the Axiom Best Business Books award in the careers category, Pivot led to the Pivot Podcast, listed by CNBC as a top career advice podcast and named one of the top 20 female-hosted business podcasts by Entrepreneur. These days on the podcast, you can find Blake chatting about the COVID-19 crisis in the series “Pivoting Around a Pandemic.”
13. STEMinist.com
Created by software developer Ann Hoang in 2010, STEMinist.com features profiles on women in — you guessed it — Science, Tech, Engineering, and Math. After reading an editorial in Glamour magazine in 1997 entitled “Women, wake up about computers!”, then 21-year-old Hoang registered for Computer Science 101 and taught herself how to build a website.
The intersection of social justice and tech inspired Hoang to take action — STEMinist aggregates stories of women in STEM with the hopes to “increase the visibility of women in STEM; promote and elevate the perspective of women in these traditionally underrepresented fields; encourage younger women and girls to pursue careers in STEM; capture a social media snapshot of what’s trending for women in STEM.”
Although there hasn’t been a new STEMinist profile in a couple of years, it’s still easy to get lost in the multitude of fascinating and insightful interviews with women from all over the country. Featuring everyone from student researchers to data scientists to engineers and entrepreneurs, these profiles highlight women’s top accomplishments, biggest inspirations, advice for future STEMinists, and lots more.
14. BlackWomenTalkTech.com
Black Women Talk Tech was founded in 2017 by Fundr co-founder Lauren Washington, Nexstar co-founder Esosa Ighodaro, and TresseNoire co-founder Regina Gwynn — with the simple goal of connecting Black women in tech. With more than 500 founders of business and tech companies and 10 chapters of national and international “mastermind groups,” this organization actively works to provide Black women the knowledge and tools it takes to build big-business brands.
“Black Women Talk Tech is a collective of Black women tech founders who have a unique understanding of the challenges we face and the advantages we bring in the industry. We’re here to identify, support, and encourage Black women to build the next billion-dollar business.”
Through a variety of events and initiatives, Black Women Talk Tech focuses on supporting Black entrepreneurs looking to grow in tech. In February, they held an immersive three-day conference called “Roadmap to Billions” and are currently offering  COVID-19 resources and a relief fund for founders.

15. Women of Color in Tech: A Blueprint for Inspiring and Mentoring the Next Generation of Technology Innovators
It’s no secret: There needs to be more diversity in tech. In Women of Color in Tech, Susanne Tedrick offers practical advice and inspiring stories that will help you develop the tools and mindset you need if you’re a woman of color — whether you’re simply considering working in the industry for the first time or struggling to get ahead.
By breaking down specific issues that may be challenging for BIPOC women, Tedrick proves that today’s tech careers can be fun — and aren’t limited to coding jobs — if you are able to build a professional network of reliable mentors who understand your goals and struggles. With the right guidance and support, it’s possible to overcome the obstacles that often prevent women of color from pursuing (and sticking with) careers in tech.
Aimed specifically at BIPOC women, this book has great advice for female innovators looking to take their career to the next level. With the right communication, public speaking, and networking skills, Tedrick argues it’s possible to break through barriers and build a rewarding future in tech.

#85: What We Got Wrong In Our Beach House Kitchen
This week I’m fessing up to a design choice that I insisted we make in our beach house kitchen, but now realize was – shall we say – misguided? Thankfully it’s not too hard to undo, so we’re explaining our change of heart, and what we’re doing to fix it. There’s also a polarizing design “trend” that we’ve been asked to weigh in on, so we’re sharing our take – and why we think it gets people so worked up (this trend literally can make people get rage-y). We’re also sharing some secrets for recreating that super cozy, uber luxurious bed you see in the pages of magazines… and why there are some bed-making tricks that are best left to the pros. Also, does Young House Love have a board game?
You can download this episode from Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, TuneIn Radio, and Spotify – or listen to it below! Then use this page to check out any links, notes, or photos we referenced. Note: If you’re reading in a feed reader, you might have to click through to the post to see the player.
What’s New
The photo above shows how close the mini fridge was to the pantry, which houses the full-size fridge.
You can hear more about the original beach house fridge debate and why we landed on that two-fridge solution in Episode #74.
This post about buying our appliances also shows some of our thought process for nixing a full-sized fridge in the main kitchen (and deciding to turn the breakfast nook into a walk-in pantry).
But we actually were able to make the fridge/cabinet switcheroo this weekend! So now that space is looking a little more like this (still need to add hardware and finish some baseboard stuff):
You can also read how we built the pantry shelves that surround our full-size fridge, pictured below:
fridge / white bins / similar woven baskets / similar pendant light
And if you want to actually “walk through” the pantry/kitchen layout for yourself, here’s a post with a video tour that’ll help you picture how it all fits together.
Can We Just Talk About
Here’s the impassioned article from Elle Decor about why they aren’t fans of backward books (like the ones pictured above).
And below is an example of one of the other “trendy” bookcase choices, the rainbow bookshelf.
And finally, here’s what we landed on for the bookshelves in our home: general color groupings, but not in a rainbow order (and not totally perfect).
living room chairs / similar wood dresser / similar rug / kitchen pendants
Here’s a shot of the other side, taken around Christmastime (hence the miniature ceramic Mr. & Mrs. Clause who are showing their affection for each other in front of a ceramic succulent).
Listener Question
Let’s first look at some examples of those extra comfy looking beds that we talked about. Here are some images we’ve come across in some recent catalogs. Above is a shot from West Elm, and below is Pottery Barn. Both of them sport that “lived in” bed look. Don’t you just wanna be that dog?
There are also some more tailored looking beds, like the one below from Ballard Designs. They still utilize overlapping layers to create lots of volume on their beds, theirs just looks a bit more formal.
And here’s an even more neatly made bed from a recent Annie Selke catalog – still rocking that extra layered bedding theme, along with an oversized tufted headboard.
We won’t ever pretend our beds can live up to the immaculate styling of those professional photos, but here’s where you can see the “formula” that works for us in real life.
On this queen-sized bed we have: a king-sized duvet & insert, two king-sized pillows with shams in front of our two sleep pillows, and one accent pillow in the middle. Extra credit: a king-sized blanket folded at the foot of the bed. That’s it! Note: There’s more on why we size up the duvet, insert, and blanket in this podcast – along with some other tips for mixing and matching, choosing headboards, etc.
duvet / blue pillow / white blanket / art / headboard / sconce / night stands / sound machine
I’m realizing I don’t have a lot of straight on “bed shots” from the beach house (can you tell we avoid taking them at all costs!?) but these give you a glimpse of the mix. And you can see how we split the striped duvet set across two beds – the bed above got the duvet itself, and the one below got the pillow shams:
headboard / rug / blue blanket / side table / lamp /  curtain rods / curtains / sound machine
Here’s the tutorial for making your own upholstered headboard too. The one pictured below is the same one in the tutorial, we just recovered it with more neutral fabric a year or two ago.
lamp / duvet (we flipped it over) / similar night stand / gold frames / similar mobile
If you’re looking for all of the paint colors and other sources from our beach house, we created a page with all of that info for you. And we’re working on a Before & After page, which is ridiculously exciting after over a year and a half of renovating this thing. That’ll be up soon I hope!
And we’ll wrap up this section with that Taco Bell parody Sherry mentioned from Saturday Night Life (an oldie, but a goodie!)
We’re Digging
If you want to see all of the board game excitement that ensued on Instagram, Sherry archived that “InstaStory” on our profile so it won’t disappear. Just visit our profile page on your mobile IG app and scroll through the little circles (see above) until you come to the one that says “YHL Game?” If you click that, you can watch all of the fun board-game-related hijinks thanks to that fateful MermaidFitJess dream.
And if you want to check out the games we recommended, here’s Exploding Kittens (and the Imploding Kittens expansion pack) as well as Bears Vs. Babies. We’re also open to more game suggestions if you guys have others that you love!
Also, good news for people who want to expand their nasal horizons like Sherry: the basil hand soap she recently fell for also comes in a dishwashing liquid. And the “special edition” Mrs. Meyer’s Iowa Pine scent is still available on Amazon (here’s a sampler pack or a 6-pack of hand soap).
If you’re looking for something we’ve dug in a past episode but don’t remember which show notes to click into, here’s a master list of everything we’ve been digging from all of our past episodes.
And lastly, a big thank you to Agility Bed for sponsoring this episode. You can get $150 off your order of any Agility Bed mattress by visiting AgilityBed.com and entering the code YHL150.
Thanks for listening, guys!
