I JUST SAW STARLIGHT LONDON AND I HAVE THOUGHTS SPOILERS AHEAD
ACT 1:
There’s whistle sounds playing in the house and stop lights scattered around the set when you walk in
The coaches except Pearl make their entrance during the end of rolling stock
Belle's the one that leads I am me
In one rock and roll, greaseball, electra and slick have their own solo portions starting with greaseball
Controls onstage more (during I am me, starlight express, and others)
He makes pearls choice for her (annoyed with her indecisiveness
Rusty and momma’s backpacks actually smoke
“Get out of my way” gb’s goes through the center track onto the stage for her entrance
the other racers bully pearl a little bit after her introduction and the other coaches tell them to stop
During ac/dc, Electra and the components have silver inflatable lightning bolts that come out of their backpacks (idk if I like this, they switch to regular backpacks after the number)
During the dance break during pumping iron, gb holds a prop gun that shoots sparks
A slower version of crazy is sung in its original spot
ACT 2:
Before the final race, greaseball, Electra and later Rusty get fueled up with diesel, electricity, and hydrogen
one of the other racers was connecting a cable thats connected to a barrel of diesel fuel and electra put both of their hands on two conductors of electricity from a barrel of electric fuel
Slick uses 2018! Caboose element of crashing for money
There’s 2 new lyrics in uncoupled, one about being left on the shelf and I don’t remember the first one
belle and tassita have little interjections in the first couple lines of uncoupled (more in a reaction type of way to the things dinah's saying)
Dinah sings in a British accent except for one line in uncoupled
Control brings out a tissue box and hands a tissue to Dinah during uncoupled
Control comforts Rusty before starlight sequence
Lights appear and hang over the audience during starlight sequence
When Electra picks Dinah and Pearl to race with them, there’s a lighting effect that surrounds Dinah and Pearl, freezing them
Dinah seems controlled by Electra during their race (in some sort of daze)
no GreaseDinah kiss but she does give her support and a thumbs up while clapping
During I do, control held the train that represents Rusty from the set, moves around a little, goes in between Rusty and Pearl and goes offstage
during starlight express, make up my heart, and starlight sequence, the planets fly down above the stage
Light end with mama hugging control in the center
There’s a trophy that control gives to Rusty during Long live Rusty
GENERAL:
The screens in the back keep track of who’s in which heat and the race standings
More of the trains acknowledge control (ex gb pushes them out of the way at her entrance)
There’s a turn table that’s used in different points during the show such as freight and I do and the middle part of the stage raises up in ac/dc and other numbers
Hydra has a small vocal echo effect (idk if it’s for the whole show tho. I just heard it during the bits of his song in act 1 and during freight)
There’s fire effects in songs like wide smile and freight
this is all the notes I quickly took down during intermission and on the way back to my hotel. If any of you have seen the show and I’m missing something, feel free to sound off in the comments/tags!
Overall I had the time of my life, Al knott serves so much cunt and I love train lesbians

*peeks from behind a corner* this might be a bit of a dumb question- but what is starlight express? (except the fact it's a musical, i think)
NOT A DUMB QUESTION AT ALL OH MY GOSH . trust me i have been WAITING to talk about it to ppl who don’t know what it is !!!!! i’ll explain the pre-2018 bochum version since it’s the one that i’ve fully watched through but characters (and a bit of story) change in future/past productions !
OK OK so starlight express is an alw musical abt trains. it was first performed in london in 1984 iirc. and it’s been performed in a theatre specifically built for the show in germany since 1988! it also currently has a london revival being performed! there’s been several different tours to places like the us and australia + asia
it takes place in a child’s imagination and it focuses mainly on a steam train called rusty!! (all the trains are people on roller skates :3)
rusty wants to compete in the big race with pearl, a first class/observation car and the newest coach! (the coaches consist of: pearl, dinah, ashley, and buffy) rusty gets bullied by most of the other trains, they tell him that he can’t race because he’s steam and steam is outdated
the main villains are electra (the electric engine), greaseball (the diesel engine), and cb/caboose (the red caboose)
ummm umm not sure what else to say without just telling the whole story. uhh in the london revival electra is nonbinary (they’ve been queer coded for like. YEARS) and dinah+greaseball are sapphics. if u have any specific questions then PLEASE ask bc i am more than happy to talk about it

Where Warehouses Are Built, Air Pollution Follows
The footprint of warehouses in the Los Angeles area is associated with higher levels of fine particulate pollution (PM2.5) in the air, recent research shows.
Scientists analyzed patterns and trends in atmospheric PM2.5 concentrations and found that ZIP codes with more or larger warehouses had higher levels of PM2.5 and elemental carbon than those with fewer warehouses. Elemental carbon is a type of PM2.5 that is produced by heavy-duty diesel engines. The NASA-funded study was published in September 2024 in GeoHealth.
This visualization shows the average concentration of PM2.5 pollution in the Los Angeles region from 2000 to 2018, along with the locations of nearly 11,000 new or existing warehouses during the same period. Areas with higher concentrations of PM2.5 are shown in dark orange, and locations of warehouses are indicated by small black dots (many of them clustered closely together).
The PM2.5 data came from models based on satellite observations, including from NASA’s MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) instruments. The warehouse locations were derived from a commercial real estate database.
PM2.5 particles measure 2.5 micrometers or less and can be inhaled into the lungs and absorbed into the bloodstream. Particulate pollution has been linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, some cancers, and adverse birth outcomes, including premature birth and low infant birth weight. As the e-commerce boom of recent decades has spurred warehouse construction, pollution in nearby neighborhoods has become a growing area for research.

As electric vehicles gain momentum in Brazil, China's influence shines through
In 2023, EV car sales rose 91 percent compared to 2022
Brazil has the sixth-highest greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, with transport alone responsible for around 16 percent of the country's total emissions. One of the main reasons for this is the significant consumption of diesel and gasoline. Research shows that electric vehicles (EVs), despite requiring more energy to manufacture due to their batteries, produce significantly less carbon emission over their lifetimes compared to gasoline-powered vehicles. Because of this difference in emissions, EVs will play a crucial role in Brazil’s green energy transition.
The vast majority of EVs in Brazil are imported from China. To protect its burgeoning domestic industry, Brazil reintroduced an import tax on EVs from China, and at the same time issued Mover, a new policy to support domestic companies’ innovation through investment. Chinese companies are adjusting to the new policy and also trying to gain some control in Brazil's lithium extraction industry — a key raw material in manufacturing batteries for EVs.
Within Brazil's population of 215 million people, EVs have steadily grown in popularity over the past few years. In 2023, there was a 91 percent increase in EV cars sold compared to the previous year — much of this due to Chinese EV imports and the growing influence of Chinese producers. But as Chinese companies make headway in Brazil's market, they are set to face obstacles, such as high prices, lacking infrastructure, and a market currently limited to Brazil's upper economic classes.
Brazilian legislators have long been encouraging the green transition in the auto sector. As early as 2018, the Brazilian federal government began the “Rota 2030” plan, which set a goal that electric vehicle sales would account for 30 percent of Brazil's total car sales by 2030. Last December, “Mover,” a new program to replace Rota 2030, was launched to grant carmakers access to financial credit in return for investments in sustainable mobility, including EVs and hybrid cars. The program is meant to expand investments in energy efficiency, set minimum thresholds for recycling in car making, and create incentives to pollute less through tax subsidies.
It was touted as the “biggest decarbonization program in history” by Brazil's vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin. By January 2029, the program will have doled out approximately USD 3.5 billion in financial credits. According to global consultancy KPMG, Mover has the potential to accelerate decarbonization in the automotive sector.

hi i've realized that ur really into starlight express but im having trouble actually figuring out what that is, is it fine if like you explain? is it from a play/musical..?
Totally fine!
Starlight Express is an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical about Trains (the characters are all trains, hence the roller skates), first opening in 1984 at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. Since then its had several productions: tours in the US, UK, Japan/Australia, some Non-Replica, etc. Presently, the show continues to run in Bochum, Germany at the Starlight Express Theatre (special made for the production's Race events.) Fun Fact: The Bochum production is Germany's longest running musical (opening in 1988 and still being performed today) and was awarded the Guinness World Record for the most visitors to a musical in a single theatre (13,044,148) on March 8th, 2010.
Over the years its had changes to the costumes, songs used, and plot points. However the story and characters have largely stayed the same!
(copy/pasted from this earlier post i made) The general story -- Which in the show's context takes place in a child's, referred to as Control, dream-- of it is an underdog steam shunter, Rusty, wanting to race in and win the championship race to prove his worth, steam-power worth, and impress this girl he likes. However, things aren’t that simple, having to not only race against the reigning champion diesel engine and five national engines, but also an unexpected superstar electric engine. Along with a few other twists.
I personally adore the music and costumes (though those have had Issues in the past.) and highly suggest giving the Original London Cast recording album a listen! Like I said the story events change a bit from each production, so I would recommend reading the wiki synopsis of it for more details.
Here are three mega mixes (show ending song) from the bochum productions (in English, 2017) (In German, 2018) (In German, 2021)
here's some gif sets i've made of various productions (link) (link) (link)

your art is making me go absolutely feral about wondermagic. I never looked at Zatanna comics before (or much comics in general), do you have any recommendations on where to start? I need more of this funky gay stage magician and her huge dork girlfriend in my life.
oh god. I MEAN first of all YES!!!!! WONDERMAGIC W!!!!!!! im so happy to hear it. they make me actually crazy im glad youre enjoying The Art
however SECOND OF ALL i must confess (as i have confessed before!) that i am a fake ass comic book fan. i've barely read Anything for Any character (LOL) i am not at ALL versed in her various appearances/history. so tbh i hope my more knowledgeable followers can drop recs for both me and you if there's anything particularly noteworthy
but i can talk about what i HAVE read bc my journey with her has been very . memorable to me. THIS IS NOT A HELPFUL POST this is just me infodumping--AT LENGTH--about my and zatanna's relationship. but i do talk a little about what ive read. like casual rontra followers can stop reading here its just rambling
anyway my first exposure to ms zatanna was in the first proper dc comic i ever read. which doesnt count because its extremely not about her (this is a tangent) but its notable for making me out loud go "who is this MAGICIAN" which prompted my partner to immediately reply "you mean zatanna zatara". oh you know her. you know the magician. bitch who the hell is--
you gotta appreciate the experience here. its babys first ever comic. i know superman i know batman ive seen them around (from being alive as a human). i have never in my life heard of the stage magician who hangs out with them (in full costume??) and is their friend(?????)
SHES VERY MEMORABLE. WHO THE HELL IS THIS MAGICIAN
anyway that's all a tangent. flash forwards to last month. i was already working on CTDE from the kara^2 angle (bc i majored in n52 power girl w a minor degree in supergirl: woman of tomorrow, of course) but i was like "i should expand this roster". my friends suggest their blorbos ofc and i have a fun time reading wiki pages from multiple storylines/continuities just getting a wide array of impressions from different places. just snooping around the Vibes. and im like. man i should look at that Magician. read some of HER pages
you gotta appreciate knowing nothing at like 3am, to figuring out ctde zatanna's palette at 5:43 am
i can't resist her.
anyway i already knew here that i was going to do something weird with her in the CTDE that wasn't necessarily connected to any of her published material. i was cooking independently. the stove was on before i had ingredients on hand bc i had the IDEA first. but i was like "i should look at some of her stuff first-hand and try and refine the Vibes" yknow. like theres limits to how much of a fake zatanna fan i can be
so we put out a call in the Mutuals Network and someone was like "you Could watch the justice league dark movie from 2017 she's in that". i was like ok 1hr15 animated movie i can handle that EASY
i didn't love the movie. so i'm not going to say anything else about it. however something VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE:
thats right. wondermagic took hold before i read a single zatanna comic. just as it has for you anon.... we're not so different you and i...
couple days pass. im just relaxing. hanging out. looking at random tumblr blogs that post comic stuff bc im curious. so i stumble on this one post and it has a clean edit of This Fateful Image 👇
this. GODDAMN image
i was like Wonder Woman is HOW TALL? excuse ME? (>he has also never engaged with a single piece of wonder woman content)
SHES SO TALL........??? and Next To Zatanna? (diesel voice) back in my day we called this spitting distance. and we would post it on /u/
im like okay what comic is this from im going there and im going NOW. to view her. like it's that easy folks. just show me wonder woman, Tall, next to another woman. and i'll go read it
nyway this is Justice League Dark from 2018-2020 it's like 30 issues or so and theres a stretch of chapters where diana is a real hunk its unbelievable. then the art changes but it was amazing while it lasted
(and then i immediately stumbled and wondermagic ctde real)
i really enjoyed this comic actually. i have NO idea how its generally regarded by zatanna nation, but i had a fun enough time. absorbed a lot of DC Comics Magic Lore for my AU which is important
at some point it starts doing Weirdly Umineko Coded dialogue totally unprompted so if you've read that it might tickle your funnybone to see comic book characters asking each other "was this a trick or was it magic 😏". made me feel right at home
my main complaint is that SHE'S NOT DRESSED LIKE A FUCKING MAGICIAN IN IT!!!! COME ON!!!!! they chickened out on the full magician garb in this whole era. which is just so sad. the fishnet fingerless gloves are funny though i might steal that. but i think she is so funny when she's wearing the full magician costume. like call me shallow but her commitment to the bit is so important to me
on the upside she interacts with wonder woman A Lot. the rest of the team is fun too. the justice league dark team is just wonder woman severely failing to put together a squad with any star power at all and i think that's adorable. her failgirl era. now she's out here with her also-rans. i like them all im fond of them
diana scruffs zee like a cat??? she's just hanging there like she's ok with it LOL
it technically jumps off of another comic but tbh if you're willing to hit the ground running and just Accept some stuff in medias res and go with it it's pretty easy to pick up if you wanted
("Just Going With It" is a vital survival skill for getting into comics in general because even if a comic isn't part of a longer continuity its always like "omg glup shitto is here!!! for the fans!!!" and you just have to be like Okay someone else will know who that is. ill just go w it. yknow 😭)
anyway i got a lot of DC Magic Lore (Strangely Familiar Edition) and Zee Content AND!!! Wondermagic Content. in this one. so even if i had an inkling about them before, this comic is really what detonated the charge so to speak. they interact so much
and the dynamic created w their relationship to magic and stuff is really interesting. brainwormy for sure. it took me from "who the hell is this magician" to "DO PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT WONDERMAGIC????? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HELLO???" in one comic. i have a LOT of thoughts about them like genuinely i think there's meat on the bone conceptually for wondermagic
but i think pretty much any time they appear together in general they're just Like That. whenever theyre both in a comic they have to be gay about it (what the fuck did she mean by this). i was losing my mind when i was catching up on DC/RWBY (ABHORRED. avoid if possible) and zatanna is immediately on her bullshit again. IS THAT HOW YOU GREET HER
anyway to sum up my rambling here's a peek into my league of comic geeks library of Shit Ive Read Since Then (that had zee in it). basically i have no further wisdom for you but for the knowers this is where i'm at (click to enlarge)
it's a totally random selection LOL my strategy is that i look at comics that list her as a cast member and spin an actual roulette wheel in my brain to decide whether i should read it or not. there's very little else going on here. just monkey sees funny magician -> neuron activates
that pretty much catches us up on my zatanna journey. youll notice if you paid attention to the date/time stamps that it took a mere matter of Days to go from "yeah i can watch a movie" to "i think about her kissing women every night before i sleep". it is DIRE in here. im not sure ive ever had such a Severe escalation of worms
i love her. she's my funny girl. anyway. zatanna nation. if you're still reading this. if you're still with me. what is your wisdom. what should me and anon read. please.
this is a matter of international consequences.
#this post is actually so long if you hit the readmore But i do circle back to you.#sorry i just took the opportunity to infodump. its my funny magician post and i decide the focus (there is no focus)

[SECOND HEADCANON/FAN THEORY]
One of the greatest animated shows of all time, Transformers Prime and its finale movie Predacons Rising, takes place in or rather shares the same universe as plenty of other media ranging from other TV shows, movies and even video games.
The theme here that would connect them all is that they focus on ensemble casts of characters not just living in a world where the odds are against, be they supernatural or not, but also having them go up against not just said odds but the highest stakes possible that affects them.
Top it off, the ensemble casts of characters are not the type of standard, generic, heroic superhero type of characters and instead are vastly different from each other with them being distinct and flawed type of people who would never think would be the "heroes" in these scenarios. They're way less Gerard Butler in 300, Liam Neeson in Taken or Robert Downey Jr. in later MCU movies and way more Genna Davis in The Long Kiss Goodnight, Paul Walker/Vin Diesel in The Fast and the Furious and Clive Owen in Sin City.
Another thing is that with the media here is that no matter how fantastical, grand in scale, epic and supernatural even as they all get, they ALWAYS remain either somewhat grounded OR grounded to some degree. Again for example, they're way less the crappy later Fast & Furious movies, the shitfest that is the DCEU and whatever the hell Ben 10: Omniverse was and way more the Jurassic Park Trilogy (even the third one with the 'Alan' raptor), Die Hard and Big Trouble In Little China.
Now let's get to it, shall we:
• Far Cry Primal
• Solomon Kane (2009)
• Wolfwalkers
• Pirates Of The Caribbean Trilogy
• Red Dead Redemption Duology
• The Wild Bunch
• The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns
• Indiana Jones Quadrilogy
• Overlord (2018)
• Inglourious Basterds
• Kolchak: The Night Stalker
• Runaway Train
• Big Trouble In Little China
• The X Files (first nine seasons, 1998 film, Millennium and The Lone Gunmen)
• Heat (1995)
• From Dusk Till Dawn
• Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel
• The Incredibles
• LOST
• Heroes
• Cloverfield
• Krampus
• The Invisible Man (2020)
• Upgrade (2018)
and
• Alita: Battle Angel
[ADDED BONUS]
Whatever happened to Airachnid?
After she had drain all of her Inseticons done to nothing but the robotic bone, Airachnid was able to find a hidden yet grungy ship within the moon she was stranded on by Soundwave. Resourceful enough to make it work and turn it into her own twisted and demented ship that's all hers, Airachnid escapes and flies back to Cybertron. Learning of the death of Optimus and the war now over, Airachnid realizes she still has unfinished business she needs to settle right here and right now. She kidnaps her nemesis Arcee, who is now secretly dealing with trauma of her past once again due to Optimus' passing, and offers her an opportunity.... due to their previous fights with Arcee always winning, she managed to do the one thing no other bot or being couldn't - she impressed her. Therefore, Airachnid controls her infection and offers to Arcee that they should team up and become hunters across the galaxy but this time hunt down the worst of the worst, the most dangerous criminals there is and the deadliest of species that do nothing but cause havoc. Sensing Arcee's new PTSD and emotions after the death of Optimus Prime, Airachnid is able to use that to her advantage and manipulates her into taking the deal.... which Arcee reluctantly does.
The two of them are now bounty hunters that take in criminals of all kind throughout space whether they'd be dead or alive and as we speak, Arcee and Airachnid are awaiting their marriage this week.

There’s Me: Post-2018 scene
(The scene in which ‘There’s Me’ is included in the current show. I also took some creative liberties regarding Greaseball and Elektra near the end of Heat 1. Also, Post-2018 Caboose’s fanon name belongs to @marastriker)
Dinah could not believe what she had witnessed. Greaseball had come in first place, but how the diesel gained the position was what boggled her mind. The two were nearing the finish line, the silverly glowing figure of Elektra a little was ahead. Without warning, Greaseball struck the electric on the side. The surprise hit caused Elektra to stumble and he quickly tried to regain his balance. Greaseball wasted no time pulling ahead taking the lead. The sliver, white, and black electric recovered impressively quick, but it was too late as his opponent sped across the finish line. Shoves and punches were unavoidable in racing, but most knew to well-time them as to move ahead and not cause accidents.
Greaseball basked in the cheers of the audience, not noticing the dirty look Elektra gave him as he rolled away with Pearl in tow. After Greaseball was done with his mini-celebration, they made their way off the race track and rolled down the line. Dinah spoke up. “What was that?!” “What was what?” asked the diesel. “What you did back there! That was cheating!” The dining car said hotly. Greaseball came to a stop and turned to race her. “Hey, come on now. We won didn’t we? Quit that kind of talk Dinah.” The brunette wasn’t having that. “That wasn’t fair and you know it! That stunt you pulled could’ve ended badly with all of us crashing, including Pearl!” She scolded, referring to the newly-arrived first-class car, who Dinah and the other coaches, Carrie and Brandi, took under their wing. “And It’s one thing to push and shove opponent and another to almost make someone crash!”
Greaseball glared at the coach and bristled. “Ok, that does it. I’m giving you air!” he exclaimed, backing away from her. Dinah stared at him, stunned. “W-what?” “You heard me.” replied Greaseball, coldly. “You race with me, you use my rules. You had your chance. You blew it. So we’re through.” With that, the champion turned away from the blue coach and began to roll away. Dinah felt tears well up in her eyes. She glared at his retreating form. “Fine! Go! I don’t need you!” She yelled with all the strength she could muster. The feelings of heartbreak and anger were too much for the dining car. She sunk down to her knees, allowing the tears to stream down her cheeks. Within seconds, a navy and red-striped caboose rolled onto the scene. He went up to Greaseball.
“Hey BV.” greeted Greaseball. “Hey GB.” BV greeted back with a suave smile. “Hey man, what a race! What a team.” “Shh!” hissed Greaseball. The Red Caboose gave a confused look. Seeing his expression, the diesel relaxed. “Oh, you mean me and Dinah. Not a team anymore BV.” He glanced at Dinah. A flicker of regret appeared on his face before hardening himself. “She’s on her own.” he concluded and left. BV stood there in shock. Greaseball and Dinah? Broken up? Normally that scenario would be preposterous. They were the power couple of the yard! His eyes gazed toward the crying coach. She let out small sobs she couldn’t hold in anymore. BV thought about leaving, but seeing Dinah in such a state made him reconsider. He let out a sigh. ‘BV, you’re such a sucker.’ he thought.
He slowly rolled up to to Dinah and kneeled down
“All alone
You think you’re on your own
You think there’s no one in the world
Who cares for you
That isn’t true
There’s me”
The brunette briefly glanced at the BV then turned away
“I may not be
The one you want to see
But if you need someone who’s kind
Then look behind
And then you’ll find
There’s me”
At his words, Dinah turned her head to fully look at the kneeling caboose.
“I’ll be near standing by
Never fear
You can cry
In a while
You will smile
And I’ll be there to see”
The crying dinning car sniffed and sighed
“By myself
I have to cry myself
Nobody else can cry the tears I have to cry”
BV gently reached out and brushed away her away her tears.
“But I will try
There’s me
Until then
When you’re okay again
You look around find
I’m no longer there
But friends are always near
You’re not alone, there’s me
There’s always me”
BV holds his hands out to Dinah. With slight hesitation, she took them and the caboose helps her to her wheels.
“For friends are always near
You’re not alone, there’s me
Your friend
There’s me”
With their hands palm to palm, the dining car and caboose gently pushed, causing them to roll backward in opposite directions. Dinah smiled softy and gave a little wave. BV tipped his hat with a similar smile. With that, the two turned and went their separate ways.

Bluenosers in Barbados
Mar 2, 2018
Written By Richard Perry
Keith meets Shelley. An instant connection.
The man was sitting alone at the end of a bench inside the Speightstown, Barbados bus terminal. Behind him some teenagers were hanging out at the FLOW cellphone booth. The cool, shaded terminal was a welcome respite from a burning sun.
He appeared to be nodding off, so I hesitated before deciding to approach him.
“Pardon me, sir. Hello?”
He stirred.
“Can you tell me if the bus to Animal Flower Cave leaves from Gate 5?”
He lifted his head and looked at me with drowsy eyes. “You going to the Cave? Now?”
“Yes, my wife and I were told to look for the Connell Town bus. Is this the right gate?”
He stood up and pointed to the bench.
Searching for the right bus at the Speightstown terminal.
“You sit right here. Is that your wife? Go get her. You sit right here. I’ll show you. I live where the bus stops.”
He spreads his hands on the bench to show how close he lives to the bus stop.
We sat down and struck up a conversation with Mr. Keith Michael Vancooten.
“Vancooten,” I say. “That sounds like a Dutch name.
“Yes, my father was a Dutchman.”
Like most Bajans we’ve met in our two trips to this eastern Caribbean paradise, our new friend jumped at the chance to help us. He had a pleasant demeanour, but grew agitated at my repeated queries about gate numbers and departure times.
“Don’t worry ’bout that,” he’d snap. “You sit here. Come with me on the bus.”
“Don’t worry ‘bout that. You come with me.”
“But what time does…”
“Just sit by me. I’ll take you to my house.”
“But how long until…”
“You relax. Don’t worry ’bout that.”
Clearly, my North American anxiety over punctuality and schedules was starting to piss him off.
“So have you lived in Barbados your whole life?” asked Shelley.
“Yes, my whole life. Except for working the boats after the war. And I turn 93 in September.”
Sensing our disbelief (we both had him pegged for maybe 70 or 75) he produced his government ID.
We needed proof that Keith is actually 93!
“That’s me, see? Born 29-09-1925. It says so right here.”
I did the math. Yup. 93 in September.
“You must lead a clean life and eat really well,” I suggested. You don’t look your age.”
“Yes, I eat good, but not the last few weeks,” he said, patting his stomach. “Not feeling good here, but getting better… yes, much better.”
A lady in a tight pink skirt walks by, glances at Keith and offers a wide smile. He nods back with a grin. “I know her from church.”
We asked him about his career and family. He was a bus mechanic for more than 40 years, but before then, at the end of the war, he sailed around the world as a ship’s engineer. “Freight and passengers. We carried both.”
Because he didn’t volunteer any information about his family, we sensed it might not be wise, or polite, to dig any deeper.
Fifteen minutes later, a blue transit bus spewing diesel fumes lurched into Gate 5, and Keith jumped up. “Let’s go, you sit by me. Here we go, follow me.”
Our ride north to the Animal Flower Cave.
No longer in the shade, another woman in the queue scrambled in her purse for the $2 bus fare as her ice cream cone dropped blobs of vanilla onto her arm and the concrete.
Half an hour later, after the noisy, kidney-pounding trip to the northern tip of Barbados, our spry Bajan guide prompts us off the bus.
“See what I mean? Look, there’s my house! You go walk to the Cave, down that road. When you come back, you come sit on my porch, right there, not in the sun. The bus will get you then, okay?”
“But what time does the next bus…”
“Don’t you worry. Just come sit on my porch. I’ll be here.”
Animal Flower Cave view – with crashing Atlantic surf.
We spend the new two and a half hours at the Animal Flower Cave buying gifts and marvelling at the pounding surf where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea. We ordered salads and drinks at the cliff-side restaurant and then toured the underground cave. The group of teenagers ahead of us cooled off in a small pool and then posed for pictures in front of a frothy, roiling sea.
At this point, I start to worry that we might miss the last public bus back to Speightstown, so we make our way under the hot sun up the dusty road to Keith’s house. Sure enough, he’s sitting on his porch, smiling and waving us forward.
“You come and sit. Here, look at all the pictures of people who came here.”
Keith has fans the world over. This letter is from Oshawa, Ontario.
He opens a shopping bag full of photos and letters sent to him from Cave visitors over the years. He likes to point to himself in each picture. “You see, that’s me, sitting right here, right in this same chair.”
I try again. “Keith, what time do you think the next bus…”
“Relax, sit there. Only problem is, the last bus at 3pm goes and gets the school students.
“Did you say the LAST bus? Keith, it’s five past three.”
“It might come here. Might not. No problem. A van will come (an infamous ‘ZR’ van, that will gladly stuff 15 passengers into a space more suitable for nine.)
A white van pulsing with reggae music suddenly screams by, going in the opposite direction.
“No worries. He’ll come back. He’ll look at me, I’ll wave and yell ‘stop’ and he’ll stop and get you. Just relax.”
So with some extra time on his hands, Keith decides to show us his house. It becomes clear that he must be living on a very small pension. He has a few pressed shirts hanging in a closet; a tiny kitchen features a very tired refrigerator, lined with a thin black film of what looks to be mould. His tiny kitchen and bedroom open to the rear yard, where he also keeps a large trap.
Shelley asks him about it. “The monkeys destroy everything,” he says. “Look at those trees. They eat all the plants. I catch them and sell them to the wildlife reserve.”
“Keith,” I ask, “In this heat, you must like a cold Banks beer from time to time.”
“I used to, but then I joined the 7th Day Adventists. No more Banks.”
On our way back to the porch, we cross under a string clothesline hanging across his living room. It holds faded cards celebrating past Father’s Days and Christmases. Before we have time to ask him anything family-related, he’s back on the porch, eyes peeled for the white van, which, as he predicted, pulled to a stop.
“See? Go, run,” he barks. With no time for a proper goodbye, I clumsily press the last of our Bajan currency into his hand.
Our last selfie on Keith’s porch before our ZR van arrived.
“Thank you, Keith,” Shelley says as we sprint to our ride.
That evening, as we unwound from our long day in rural northern Barbados, we agreed that the real magic of discovering this island isn’t in the malls or the air-conditioned Massy grocery stores or on luxurious catamarans.
It’s hitting the road to small out-of-the-way places far from the crush of tourists. It’s trusting that serendipity will put you in front of the most amazing people when you least expect it.

The Iron Giant (1999)
A box-office disappointment when released in 1999, The Iron Giant is proof that box office results shouldn’t matter to you unless you're seeing a share of the profits. This is a wonderful film, ripe to be discovered (or re-discovered if it’s been a while) at home. Filled with heartfelt emotion and rich characters, I can’t imagine anyone not enjoying it.
It’s 1957, the middle of the space race. A strange object falls from the sky near the small town of Rockwell, Maine. The strange visitor is a 50-foot-tall metal-eating robot (voiced by Vin Diesel) who befriends a lonely young boy named Hogarth (Eli Marienthal). With the help of a beatnik artist named Dean (Harry Connick, Jr.), Hogarth tries to keep his new friend a secret. That becomes increasingly difficult as a suspicious government spook named Kent Mansley (voiced by Christopher McDonald) investigates.
So loosely based on the novel by Ted Hughes it might as well be an original creation, this tale is rich with detail and care. You can watch it over and over and always pick up something new - even if you've seen the new Signature Collection enough times to memorize the added scenes. Director Brad Bird, who helped shape the story along with screenwriter Tim McCanlies must’ve scrutinized every line in the script, every single storyboard with a fine-toothed comb to ensure the results would be everything they could be. In Hogarth the viewers find a curious, lonely boy who shows maturity beyond his age (perhaps due to the death of his father) but also gets excited – as any of us would – at the prospect of befriending a giant metal man. The titular giant alternately takes on the role of child and parent to Hogarth and as they explore their corner of the world together, their adventures make for many great comedic moments. Then, Mansley will get a bit too close. The film becomes a nail-biter. To complete the gamut of emotions, there's the conclusion. I dare you not to tear up but all the way through, you’ll laugh. Big, varied laughs come from all sorts of directions except for below the belt.
This is a movie for everyone. It’s so clever, so funny and so… real. Even the film’s villain and side characters receive that extra bit of attention to make them feel like they exist beyond the confines of the screen. Mansley isn’t so much evil as he is a product of his time. He’s a jerk at points and takes things too far, but the film uses its setting to make you understand exactly what goes through his mind. You almost feel bad for him when he's made to look a fool. If you’re seeing the film with small children, be prepared to have long, animated discussions about all of the characters’ choices.
All that, and it’s a great-looking movie. You may be able to strain your eyes and pick out which scenes use computer imagery to create the perfectly crisp outline of the giant, but the effort will feel like a waste. It’s basically seamless. I’ve seen this film so many times I know nearly every line and gag by heart but it still enchants me.
Sometimes, I award 5-star ratings to movies but I secretly want to add an asterisk. I might be lenient because the politics of social norms of the time were different than now, the picture was the first of its kind and there’s no way anyone would’ve thought of doing X rather than Y or the flaws I see are so minuscule you’re just forced to ignore them. The Iron Giant doesn't need an asterisk. It's a perfect film; the kind I'd like everyone to see. (Signature Edition on Blu-ray, August 17, 2018)

American JPMorgan Chase bank and British HSBC bank, processed payments for companies in Africa that were controlled by the now-deceased founder of the Wagner Group , Yevgeny Prigozhin, according to the Financial Times
According to these documents, in 2017, the Sudanese mining company Meroe Gold, which acted as a front for the Wagner Group, sent a payment from a local bank account through JPMorgan Chase, acting as an intermediary bank in New York, to a Chinese supplier of industrial equipment.
Another record from the same year shows that Meroe Gold transferred payment to a Chinese company for diesel generators and spare parts via Hang Seng Bank, part of the HSBC group.
There is no evidence to suggest that the banks were aware they were facilitating transactions for Wagner Group front companies.
At the time of the payments, Meroe Gold was not under US sanctions, although Prigozhin had been sanctioned since 2016. In 2018, Meroe Gold was sanctioned by the US for being "owned or controlled by Prigozhin" and assisting him in "exploiting Sudan's natural resources for personal gain."
HSBC declined to comment on the specific transactions in Sudan, but emphasized its "deep commitment to fighting financial crimes and maintaining the integrity of the global financial system."
JPMorgan stated that "After reviewing the limited information provided to us, we found no records matching these transactions."

A group of 25 California counties has sued Elon Musk's Tesla, claiming the electric vehicle maker mishandled hazardous waste at its facilities across the state.
The lawsuit from Los Angeles, Alameda, San Joaquin, San Francisco, and other counties was filed on Tuesday in California state court. It seeks civil penalties and an injunction that would require the company to properly handle its waste in the future.
The counties accused Tesla of violating state unfair business and hazardous waste management laws by improperly labeling waste and sending the materials to landfills that cannot accept hazardous material. California's hazardous waste management law carries potential civil penalties as high as $70,000 per violation per day.
Waste produced or handled at the facilities includes paint materials, brake fluids, used batteries, antifreeze, and diesel fuel, the counties said.
The lawsuit claims that violations have occurred at as many as 101 facilities, including at Tesla's manufacturing plant in Fremont.
Spokespeople for the counties did not immediately provide additional details about the case.
The lawsuit is not the first time Tesla has faced allegations related to its hazardous waste management practices.
The company reached a settlement in 2019 with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over alleged federal hazardous waste violations at its Fremont plant. In that deal, Tesla agreed to take steps to properly manage waste at the facility and pay a $31,000 fine.
Tesla later reached a deal with the EPA in 2022 in which it agreed to pay a $275,000 penalty after the federal agency said the company was failing to keep records and to implement plans to minimize air pollutants from painting operations at the Fremont plant.
A Delaware judge on Tuesday voided the $56 billion pay package of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, ruling that the company's board of directors failed to prove "that the compensation plan was fair" or show much evidence that they had even negotiated with him.
Tesla's share price slid about 3% in after-hours trading Tuesday following news of the decision in the lawsuit filed by Richard Tornetta, a shareholder in the electric automaker.
Chancery Court Chancellor Kathleen McCormick told the parties in the lawsuit to confer on what would be a final order directing Musk to return the compensation he has received under the plan.
The pay package that Tesla granted Musk in 2018 was the largest compensation plan in public corporate history, McCormick noted in her 200-page ruling.
The package made the Tesla and SpaceX boss a centimillionaire and the richest person on the planet.
That plan had offered Musk the chance to secure 12 tranches of Tesla stock options, which would vest if the company's market capitalization increased by $50 billion and Tesla achieved a revenue target.
McCormick ruled that Tornetta had proved that Musk "controlled Tesla" and that the process leading to the board's approval of his compensation was "deeply flawed."
She wrote that Musk had "extensive ties" with the people who were negotiating for Tesla on the package, including members of management "who were beholden to Musk," among them General Counsel Todd Maron, his former divorce attorney.
In a tweet late Tuesday afternoon, Musk wrote, "Never incorporate your company in the state of Delaware."
In a later tweet, he started a poll with the question, "Should Tesla change its state of incorporation to Texas, home of its physical headquarters?"
Tornetta's lawyer, Greg Varallo, said in a statement, "We are enormously grateful for the Court's thorough and extraordinarily well-reasoned decision in turning back the Tesla board's absurdly outsized pay package for Musk."
McCormick's ruling hinged on the finding that Musk, rather than its board of directors and shareholders, controlled Tesla, at least when it came to the question of setting his compensation.
The judge wrote: "In addition to his 21.9% equity stake, Musk was the paradigmatic 'Superstar CEO,' who held some of the most influential corporate positions (CEO, Chair, and founder), enjoyed thick ties with the directors tasked with negotiating on behalf of Tesla and dominated the process that led to board approval of his compensation plan."
Tesla and Musk's attorneys, the court decided, "were unable to prove that the stockholder vote was fully informed because the proxy statement inaccurately described key directors as independent and misleadingly omitted details about the process."
That’s Wall Street’s reaction to the quarterly results on Tuesday from Alphabet and Microsoft. Both companies reported revenue and earnings that exceeded estimates, yet the stocks sold off after hours, a drop that carried over into Wednesday’s trading session.
In investor speak, the stocks were priced for perfection. Before earnings, Alphabet was up 56% for the year and climbed to a fresh high last week, exceeding the prior record from late 2021, the peak of the tech boom. Microsoft was up 70% over the past 12 months, reaching a fresh high recently and surpassing Apple as the most valuable publicly traded company.
The companies generated excitement last year by riding the artificial intelligence wave and were also lauded by shareholders for their dramatic cost-cutting efforts, which included eliminating thousands of jobs.
In the weeks heading into their earnings reports, investors were buying as if they expected positive surprises. They were left disappointed and nitpicking the numbers.
Alphabet on Tuesday reported 13% revenue growth, the fastest rate of expansion since early 2022. Sales of $86.31 billion topped the average estimate of $85.33 billion, according to LSEG, formerly known as Refinitiv. Earnings per share of $1.64 beat estimates by 5 cents.
Revenue at Microsoft increased 18% to $62.02 billion, topping the $61.12 billion average analyst estimate. EPS of $2.93 was 15 cents above consensus.
Both companies also beat expectations in their cloud businesses, with Google Cloud reporting 25% growth and Microsoft’s larger Azure and other cloud services expanding 30%.
The one disappointment from Alphabet was in Google’s ad business, which delivered revenue of $65.52 billion, trailing analysts’ estimates of $65.94 billion, according to StreetAccount. Within ads, YouTube came in just shy of expectations.
Stifel analysts, who recommend buying the stock, said in a quick-take report on Tuesday that Alphabet produced “healthy advertising results, but not enough.”
Brian Wieser, an analyst at media and advertising consultancy Madison and Wall, said the market has unrealistic expectations for Google given its size and dominance.
Alphabet shares dropped 7.5% on Wednesday. Microsoft’s decline was less severe, with the stock falling 2.7%.
Microsoft’s outlook was a bit light, overshadowing the earnings and revenue beat. The company called for fiscal third-quarter sales between $60 billion and $61 billion, while analysts polled by LSEG had expected $60.93 billion.
Shares of chipmaker AMD also dropped despite better-than-expected revenue numbers and profits that met estimates. The stock, which was up 137% in the past year on excitement about its artificial intelligence processors, fell almost 6% after the announcement.
Attention now turns to Thursday, when Amazon, Apple, and Meta all report quarterly results. Similar to Alphabet and Microsoft, Meta shares have climbed to a record this month. Apple hit its all-time high in December, while Amazon remains about 6% below its record from 2022.
