Australien er et kontrastfyldt og fascinerende kontinent

Australien består af det australske kontinent, øen Tasmanien samt adskillige mindre øer, og er verdens sjettestørste land.

Australien er et af verdens mest kontrastfyldte og fascinerende lande med tørre ørkener, frodige regnskove, spændende storbyer og et unikt dyreliv. Det er det perfekte land at stoppe i, på vej til en ferie i Kina. Der er godt nok langt kontinenterne imellem, men det bliver en af de bedste rejser du foretager i dit liv.

Australien og øen Tasmanien er beliggende i den kontinentale del af Stillehavet. Terrænet er overvejende fladt.

Langs den østlige kyst strækker den australske bjergkæde sig. I det indre af landet er det store Centralbækken beliggende. Det er ørkenagtigt og omgivet af stepper og savanner.

Australien har en storslået natur, hvis karakter ikke finder sin lige noget andet sted i verden.

Her er endeløse vinmarker, vidtstrakte sandstrande og barsk outback. Her er kænguruer, koalaer, vombatter, kakaduer, delfiner, og en lang række mindre nuttede dyr.

Aktiviteter som dykning, trekking og cykling har gode vilkår her og for rygsæksrejsende, der mest er på jagt efter kultur, er der meget at opleve både i byerne og i de mere isolerede samfund ude i bushen og outbacken.

Landet har tilmed et unikt dyreliv med kænguruer, koalaer, dingoer, næbdyr, pingviner og krokodiller, mange spændende nationalparker og verdens ældste civilisation som dateres over 50.000 år tilbage i tiden.

Didgeridooen

Skal man forevige mindet om Australien ved at købe en didgeridoo med hjem, kan dette kun anbefales at gøre ved en rigtig aboriginal butik.

Da efterspørgslen på didgeridoos fra turister er eksploderet de seneste år, betyder det, at man i Asien er begyndt at lave billige masseproduceret kopier.

Med et utrænet øje kan det være svært at se forskel på kopi og original, men kigger man lidt nærmere, er det let at få øje på forskellene, ikke mindst fordi mundstykkerne på kopierne bliver lavet i gummi eller andet hårdt materiale.

De mest kendte steder for Danskere er:

Ayers Rock - Uluru

Ayers Rock eller Uluru som den også hedder, ligger 465 km fra Alice Springs, og det er lettest at komme hertil med fly.

Klippen, der består af rødbrun arkose (en art sandsten), er ca. 2,5 km lang, 1,5 km bred og rejser sig 335 m over den omgivende slette.

Især i aftensolen lyser bjerget rødt. Det skyldes den tynde belægning af rust, som er forvitret ud af sandet og har lagt sig som et ganske tyndt lag på overfladen af klippen.

Uluru/Ayers Rock udgør for mange højdepunktet på rejsen til Australien.

Størrelsen i sig selv udgør et ubegribeligt skue, og stenen gennemgår hver eneste dag de mest utrolige farveændringer.

Operahuset i Sydney

I dag beundrer millionvis af mennesker det smukke operahus i Sydney hvert år.

Det er designet af danskeren Jørn Utzon i perioden 1957-59 og tog 17 år at bygge, og er på den ene side et af verdens førende eksempler på såvel et akustisk mesterværk som et fantastisk nyskabende design.

Operahuset indeholder i alt 1000 rum og opsætter 3000 forestillinger om året.

Den største hal kan huse 2500 gæster og indeholder et enormt orgel med 10.500 piber.

I dag er huset den mest benyttede koncertbygning i hele verden, og samtidig en af de mest besøgte turist-attraktioner.

Great Barrier Reef

Great Barrier Reef er et must når man besøger Australien. Det er kendt som verdens ottende vidunder, er 340 000 kvadratkilometer stort og strækker sig i 2000 kilometer langs Queenslands kyst.

Koralrevet er verdens mægtigste, og samtidigt det største bygningsværk, der nogensinde er blevet skabt af levende væsner.

Revet, der er opbygget i løbet af de sidste 8000 år, består af forskelligartede revtyper grupperet i tre langstrakte regioner.

Man kan snorkle, dykke eller tage en naturskøn flyvetur over revet for at se det i fugleperspektiv.

Sejl blandt de smukke øer i Whitsundays, udforsk regnskoven i Daintree eller bo på en af de luksuriøse øer, som Hayman og Lizard Island.

Vejret

Årstiderne i Australien er omvendte i forhold til de danske, så de har sommer, når vi har vinter. Men Australien breder sig over så mange klimazoner, at der både kan være sne og hedebølge på samme tid forskellige steder i landet.

Groft set kan Australien deles ind i tre klimazoner: tropisk i nord, subtropisk i midten og tempereret helt i syd. Men variationerne er store.

Størstedelen ligger i det subtropiske klimabælte med lange varme somre og korte milde vintre.

April til oktober er de bedste måneder at besøge Queensland, Northern Territory og Western Australia. Tasmanien er bedst at besøge i sommermånederne, dvs. december – februar.
