DICK MATENA FIGURANT IN ZIJN EIGEN STRIPSCENARIO

“Soms laat ‘het geheugen van de strip’ dat ik schijn te hebben mij danig in de steek”, zo begint één van de vele autobiografische columns van Dick Matena. Ondanks dat hij nog zoveel van zijn verleden weet, baart het hem wel zorgen dat er zwarte gaten vallen in de herinneringen aan en uit zijn rijke leven. Hij schrijft de columns vanaf 2014 door de jaren heen voor het stripblad Eppo. Nu zijn de beste daarvan gebundeld in een boek. Dat hij na 80 jaar weleens wat is vergeten van zijn wandeling door een turbulent leven als striptekenaar en scenarist is hem vergeven. Dat kan ook bijna niet anders wanneer je leest wat hij nog wel allemaal weet en kan na vertellen. Zijn korte verhalen geven een bij tijd en wijle door drank en feesten vertroebelde kijk achter de schermen van de stripbladen en het stripschap.

Ook ik heb ze stuk gelezen. Die Pep’s en later de Eppo’s. Donald Duck vond ik eigenlijk maar niets, te kinderachtig. Ik wilde volwassen strips zien. En las later de Nederlandse MAD, Tante Leny Presenteert en had een abonnement op De Vrije Balloen. Ook kocht ik weleens een 1984 of Titanic. Kocht stapels stripalbums, verzamelde het werk met Asterix en Guust Flater. Ik verslond Aloha en was wild van het werk van Evert Gerardts, Theo van den Boogaard, Peter Pontiac en Joost Swarte. De laatste heeft eens bij een tentoonstelling van zijn werk in Museum Belvédère een exemplaar van Cocktail Comix uitgave 1973 gesigneerd met een heus zelfportret. Maar dit alles terzijde. Het illustreert mijn liefde voor de strip. En daarom was ik geïnteresseerd in de verhalen van Dick Matena. Ik had ze kunnen lezen in stripblad Eppo, maar verloor dit blad jaren geleden uit het oog. Maar de strip raakte niet uit mijn hart. Met rode koontjes en een hijgerige glimlach las ik zijn memoires vrijwel in een enkele dag door en uit.

Dick Matena is niet alleen een begenadigd tekenaar, maar ook een rasechte verhalenverteller. Met gevoel voor humor schetst hij een karakter van zijn leven. Matena figureert als het ware in zijn eigen strip naar een persoonlijk scenario. Hij schrijft zoals hij tekent. Eerst cartoonesk, maar later in een meer realistische vormgeving. Van Polletje Pluim en De Argonautjes naar meer serieus werk als De Avonden van Gerard Reve, Kort Amerikaans van Jan Wolkers en onwaarschijnlijke verhalen van Edgar Alan Poe. Start hij bij de Toonder Studios, tekent hij voor diverse stripbladen in binnen- en buitenland. Verdient hij met zijn werk prijzen. In zijn columns kijkt hij terug en vertelt zijn levensverhaal, zolang het nog kan. “Nu ik er nog ben” heet dat verzameld literair werk. De tekst wordt verluchtigd met fotomateriaal uit zijn eigen archief. Zo krijg ik beeld van de beschreven personages en gaat zijn leven voor mij leven.

De mensen die zijn pad kruisen benaderd hij als striptekenaar. Beschrijft de karakters beeldend. Van het verhalende beeld dat hij oproept maak ik in gedachten een tekenfilm. Een dynamische animatieprent. Humoristisch beschreven en omschreven zonder blad voor de mond te nemen. In de verhalen zet hij zichzelf niet weg als de grote man, de beroemde kunstenaar, maar gaat evenzo door het stof wanneer de waarheid boven water komt. Hij is nog weleens opvliegend en maakt dramatisch ruzie. Ik zie de stekelige tekstballonnen zich vullen met PATS BOEM BENG en andere krachttermen. De feiten lijken soms wat overtrokken en zeker wel eens over de top, maar het leest als een krachtige roman – het script voor een tragikomedie. Maar Matena zuigt zijn leven niet uit zijn duim, naar ik mag aannemen. De opgevoerde personages zijn bestaande mensen en geen verzonnen stripfiguurtjes. Met namen die klinken in de stripwereld en veelal tot de verbeelding spreken. Dick is nog weleens de juiste datum en de exacte plaats van de gebeurtenissen vergeten of voorgoed kwijt, maar weet zich daar uit te redden door het feit beeldend te omschrijven. Die gaten in zijn geheugen wuift hij weg met een kwinkslag en een grap.

Het leest gemakkelijk, zoals een strip eenvoud geeft aan een verhaal. Dick Matena schrijft beeldend, zoals een tekenaar de werkelijkheid met een lach en een traan kan weergeven. In zijn woorden zie ik de plaatjes zo opdoemen. Vormen de karakters zich als in een cartoon. De striptekenaar cq verhalenverteller voert mij door het stripwezen. Aan zijn hand leer ik de mens achter de getekende verhalen kennen. Grote namen als Marten Toonder, Hans Kresse en Martin Lodewijk zijn bij hem kind aan huis. Het zijn de idolen, voorbeelden en partners in crime. Zoals eerder geschreven neemt Dick geen blad voor de mond en schrijft zoals het gedrukt staat. Het is meer dan een kijk achter de schermen, een blik door de geopende deur die meestal gesloten blijft, het is ook een beschouwing van een leven, het zijn van een striptekenaar met best wel enige naam en faam.

Hoewel zijn naam bij stripliefhebbers tot de verbeelding spreekt, neemt hij zijn eigen roem met een korrel zout. “Ach ja, als ik een Marten Toonder-imitator geworden zou zijn, wat makkelijk gekund had, dan was ik populairder geweest dan dat ik nu ben. In ieder geval minder omstreden, want herkenning maakt het publiek rustig.” Zijn werk is weleens triviaal besproken en minder positief over de tong gegaan. Maar in zijn optiek is het leven een grap, een beeldverhaal. Iedere dag een strip met een open plot, zodat de volgende dag daarop voort gegaan kan worden. Zijn turbulente leven, hij is zijn eigen karikatuur van de losgeslagen kunstenaar, staat in rimpels op zijn gezicht geschreven. Een prachtkop die het leven beschrijft, een mimiek die het zijn tekent.

“Nu ik er nog ben” is dit jaar verschenen bij Uitgeverij L. En Dick Matena schrijft dit jaar 80 achter zijn leeftijd. Zijn leven kan nu nog verhaal krijgen uit de eerste hand. Hij is zijn eigen getuige en ik kan met rode oortjes op het puntje van de stoel daarvan deelgenoot worden. Lezen over zijn goden en half-goden, zijn voorbeelden en navolgers. En hij is er vele tegen gekomen in dat lange leven. Van Herman Brood tot Martin Lodewijk en André Franquin, van Fred Julsing tot Don Lawrence en alles wat daartussen zit in stripland en omstreken. Het is een machtig mooi geschrift, aanbevolen aan ieder stripliefhebber. Het boek verdient het om vele herdrukken te krijgen. Misschien dat de uitgever op een gegeven moment moet besluiten de titel te veranderen in “Toen hij er nog was”. Maar zover is het nog lang niet. Dick Matena heeft daarenboven het recht langer bij ons te zijn en meer van zijn herinneringen beeldend na te laten.

Lil Bad Wolf stories began in issue No. 52

(January 1945) and remained a regular feature for more than ten years, continuing to appear in the majority of issues even after the continuous run stopped. Carl Buettner (1945-1946), Gil Turner (1948-1956), and Dick Matena (2005-

2008) are generally regarded as the most notable Wolf creators featured in the title. In the 2000s, Big Bad Wolf often supplanted his son as title character of the stories.

Bucky Bug stories began in issue No. 20 (May

1942) with a series of newspaper reprints; original Bucky stories started a while later, in issue No. 39 (December 1943). Bucky stories were monthly through 1950, were not seen for several decades, then returned on an occasional basis from 1988 onwards, with a mixture of old and new material.

By the mid-1950s, Walt Disney's Comics and Stories was the best selling comic book in the United States, with a monthly circulation of over three million. We could say that comic strips had it’s 60’s era during the 60’s: A maddening fever of vanguardism, experimentation and obsession for breaking aesthetical barriers, next to which the boots of Warhol -or her lost sister’s, Marta Mirujín- could pass as paintings of little boats to decorate hotels’ bedrooms.

In Spain, where publications as Totem, Comix Internacional, 1984, El Víbora and the iberic edition of Metal Hurlant spreaded the works of Moebius, Joast Swarte and Dick Matena, postmodernism ruled. The authors of the moment practically didn’t recognise a comic strip that didn’t do cultural references to a preexistent work or didn’t play with the genre’s conventions. The one that wasn’t drawing a comic about retrofuturist secret agents in the style of clear lines from the 40’s; was narrating hermetic, muted events or illustrating his LSD vision with photographic montage. Everything contained irony, referentiality and double reading and was extremely confusing.

Inside of this context the critic Jordi Courreilles was in the pinnacle of his career thanks to the brainy articles he published in the cultural suplement La Vanguardia and other publishings. Between his discoveries there were Daniel Torres’ referencial universe and the styles also filled with cultural reference of drawers as Gallardo and Max. “Max takes in his hands the sexual and politically reprimited worlds of Hergé and James M. Barrie and he transforms them, mercy of his paintbrush’s alchemy, in a new galaxy based on sex, violence, and above all, multireferenciality, where Elvis Presley fits as much as Conan el Barbaro”, he said, without losing his train of tought, about the very 80’s comic Peter Pank. Reading El Niñato, Gallardo and Mediavilla’s work, he gloated this way: “Gallardo and Mediavilla take the universes of Popella, Robert Crumb and Francisco Ibáñez and trough violence and multiple referentiality turn them into a totally different specie”.

Some authors complained about the fact that there wasn’t any way of having any kind of repercussion unless they did a reference to something or broke an established code. Resented with the critic, a pretty well known drawer sent Coureilles a little book that recopilated the strips of Paco el Burrote, of the Galician Manuel Sánchez, accompanied by a letter that said “Look, Jordi, how vanguardist this dude is”.

The analysis of Sánchez’s work drived him unhinged. Firstly, he thought he didn’t understand it. Then, he supposed that the vulgar humorities of Paco el Burrote were written “ironically”. But finally, studying the opus with more profundity (what, according to his familiars’ stories, started occupying more and more time of his day), he exploded of enthusiasm. We transcribe here a fragment of the critic he tried sending to La Vanguardia:

“Paco el Burrote, unlike other modern comics, doesn’t play with the referenciality of foreign works. The immense Sánchez, doing that apparently coarse joke where Paco farts and his girlfriend faints, is doing a reference to his own comic, and simultaneously, to the comic that is taking place in the moment. That’s the geniality of the author from La Mancha.”

Courreilles’ extasis didn’t end with that encounter: “And besides, Sánchez -guided by the exhaustive reading I’m doing- is also capable of referencing that first reference, detectable also at the same time and exactly in the same physic place that the first one. But it’s another one. And this doesn’t end here: Since I started analyzing -no hurry, no pause- Paco el Burrote, I’ve already detected 12.678 references superimposed to other references, all all all of them included in the first page of the book. In fact, I’d like to keep reading, but I fear I can’t until I reach the first sequence’s last layer of referentiality, a duty that is driving me uphill”. And he adds, angstily: “I’d also like to stop finding references so I could talk with my children. Or sleep. Or eat”.

The article ended occupying 3.800 pages, which explains why it was never published in the newspaper. A paragraph in the page 3.230 gives some kind of indication of what force carried Coureilles to the looney bin: “The doubt of if Sánchez in reality wasn’t doing any auto-reference, but plain and flatly a comic strip, assaults me. But to a man in my position, that idea is incomprehensible and terrifying".
