Very briefly.

Emma is Kayla's sister, who Stryker is keeping as a hostage. He claims that he needs her for her mutation but he never adds her abilities to Barakapool.

She and Baby Cyclops have one important scene together. Stryker's men show up with guns to stop the mutants from escaping. Emma uses her diamond invulnerability to shield Cyclops from bullets and aim him at him, so that he can use his optic blasts to waste them all.

It's a pretty cool little moment and the effects on Emma's diamondskin are neat.

Emma's part in this film is so minor and forgettable that she might as well just be a lamp; Same with Cyclops and, honestly, Kestrel. But at least she gets to be the vital part of this one action scene.

This is also where Kayla gets shot.

This is what kills Kayla. Not Stryker or Barakapool or anything. She spends the rest of the film succumbing to the gunshot from one of those random goons Emma and Cyclops took out.

Ahh, the Kayla reveal.

Kayla's power is the ability to influence people's minds through physical contact. They actually set this up early in the film, when she and Logan encounter some assholes on a bridge.

And it works. Bizarrely, the man acquiesces. Logan even calls out how weird that was.

It's a good bit of second-watch "Ohhhhhhhh that's what that was" type foreshadowing. They showed us Kayla using her powers before we even knew she was a mutant.

But the payoff only works up until the moment we learn Kayla's true motives.

She's actually not a co-conspirator in Weapon X. She's a victim too. Stryker is holding her sister, Emma Frost, and forcing her to earn Emma's freedom.

For six years, Kayla's been honeypotting Logan on Stryker's orders to secure Emma's freedom. Feels like someone with mind control powers has easier ways to accomplish that than going along with blackmail.

But, to the film's credit, it shows Stryker flinch and reach for a gun when she takes a step towards him, when she's like twenty feet away as it is. It's strongly implied that he is very cautious of her for that exact reason.

But it still feels weird that they bring her back to life and reveal that she betrayed Logan, only to have her immediately un-betray him and join his side minutes afterward. Stryker basically brought her here to give Logan an extra party member, since Gambit fucked off as soon as he was done Fast Travelling him.

She's here to be Logan's backup and his humanizing quality, to pull him back from the edge.

Sabretooth says, "Kill me." Kayla says "You're not an animal." She wins out, pulling Logan back and convincing him to spare Sabretooth's life.

A bad decision, really. Logan's killed so many people already. And he will kill so many more people in the original X-Men trilogy. But he needs to spare just this one guy, one of the two worst guys in the film, because Kayla says it's a moral choice. Slaughter everyone else to your heart's content, but this one will decide who you really are, Logan.

See, the reason is because Sabretooth is different. Killing him here, right here, like this? It would do something to Logan.

Specifically, this.

And this series is about to become convoluted enough with that shit as it is.
