Hollow Ecologies
Just as an FYI, this post starts with "i saw snek" and ends with "so, Soul Society's menos milking porn era--'
--
The other day I got super distracted by a super cute snake, whom I named Hyourinmaru. I then immediately watched Hyourinmaru have an anxiety spiral about a planter that was rolling around in the wind, which he tried to do battle with twice. 😅
Then last night I was pulling a cover over my patio furniture, and a garter snake fell out. The cover is black, so I think it was nice and warm. But this snake was very astonished by the whole thing and kept trying to climb straight up the covering, so I named him Zabimaru, because:

I was looking up what kind of snake Hyourinmaru was, and:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Are the herpetologists OKAY??? WHY WAS THAT THE ASSUMPTION.
I feel like any time I bring this up it's in the tags of some post that will never be found again, but I love thinking about the particular ways Hollow ecologies are understudied/not well understood in Soul Society, and I feel like there's definitely an edition of the Academy textbook that talks about how Menos suck milk from cows by night.
Like, maybe there's some weird conflation of leeches and really small Gillian (Menos Mini) and somehow milk gets involved and it's this whole thing. Nowaways it's probably considered a little backwater to believe this, or to entertain the notion, but at various points in Soul Society's recent history:
The 12th received actual money to do a study on Menos milking behaviors (under the pretense that it would be better than Menos eating whole souls, right?)
There was a moral panic about how tits-out you were allowed to be with your shihakushou, with the vague insinuation that if you dressed improperly the Menos would come for you
The idea resulted in some really incredible porn that started as kind of an underground avant gardist art movement out of the Academy but soon also made its way to high society (resulting in the Soul Society equivalent of Hokusai's tentacle porn).
Anyway, here's another picture of Hyourinmaru, who was not thrilled to be in my yard or in this post:

I sorta touched on this before but:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In both the anime and the manga, Soifon seems fairly obsessed with the position of Gundanchō (Force Commander) of the Keigun (Punishment Force), and with Yoruichi having formerly occupied it. She doesn't ever really seem to care about being or Yoruichi being Sōshireikan (Supreme Commander) of the Onmitsukidō, or Taichō (Captain) of the 2nd Division. Only the latter is ever really brought up, and she doesn't seem to really care about Yoruichi in those capacities. In other words, while Soifon is properly introduced this way in chapter 138:
Tumblr media
I'm really not so sure Soifon truly gives a shit about the Gotei 13, or even the Onmitsukidō. She really seems like a Keigun loyalist through and through. Which is probably why she doesn't ever act like she cares about Marechiyo, as he's Keiratai (Security Force). Or, for example, this guy who's Riteitai (Inner Court Force):
Tumblr media
And a lot of the time when Soifon's showing up, it's mostly with Keigun personnel, like in DiamondDust Rebellion (also the woman to the left of Soifon seems to be both a recurring character and the only other woman in the 2nd Division):
Tumblr media
Just as Yoruichi traditionally did:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This makes sense as I pointed out:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Fēng Clan only cares about the Keigun and displaying strength within it. Anyone who can't join the Keigun is cast out. So of course Soifon would only really value Keigun personnel and conceive of herself as Keigun first and foremost!
To branch off into headcanon territory, given that it seems likely Yoruichi didn't start in the Keigun from the appearance of her earliest known uniform, one can also imagine this as providing some grist for Soifon's derision and dismissal of Yoruichi once worship turns to loathing.

Ranking the Bleach movies:
1. Hellverse: Best movie of the lot. While this was a very simple movie, I thought it distilled Bleach well. Lots of hype, well animated fight scenes, and Ichigo powering up with yet another kind of power. I liked that this one was actually about Ichigo for once and it did a good job of showing him really breaking down. Also, it has more of Ichigo's friends than the captains/lieutenants for once.
-Most Memorable Funny Scene: Airdropped Orihime for healing
...
2. Fade to Black: This one was a good time. Seeing the results of everyone forgetting Rukia and Ichigo was compelling. It also had a creative way to handicap Ichigo since he spends almost the entire movie trying not to fight everyone. This also successfully showed off almost everyone during the finale. The memory logic was very Kingdom Hearts.
-Most Memorable Funny Scene: Kenpachi's reawakening and joining the final battle. I don't care if movie 2 did it first. It was hilarious.
...
3. Memories of Nobody: A serviceable movie. It was great to see background characters walk around in Karakura. This definitely used it's animation budget and looks a lot better than the show did at the time. It had some fun moments but makes sure that everyone forgot the movie even happened by the end, so unfortunately I can't say it was especially memorable. Villains didn't do it for me.
-Most Memorable Funny Scene: Ichigo putting his foot down at stealing a hair ribbon. He is a good boy and won't put up with that XD
...
4: The DiamondDust Rebellion: This felt like a filler arc. Most fights were off screen/finished in one blow. Nothing really makes sense plotwise. It was also really obvious this movie was made before a lot of characters had shown off their special attacks in the anime. Definitely my least favorite.
-Most Memorable Funny Scene: Ichigo randomly upgrading from getting impressions of his opponents when fighting to seeing their important flashbacks

I know I primarily usually post about Yu-gi-oh content, as well as have a username based around Red eyes.
But a movie I won’t stop loving is Bleach: Diamonddust Rebellion. (My second being YGO: Bonds Beyond Time.)
I just- Love the characterization of Toshiro and the fact he keeps trying to avoid having anyone help like a stubborn fool. Will he accept help? No.
Er- well until Ichigo friggen punches him. But if you haven’t seen bleach and dont want to watch the millions of episodes, I at least recommend watching the movies. I loved watching Memories of nobody as well. It was actually the first movie that got me into this series.
Just... Had a massive realization that....... I get into the show because of.... watching movies... I got into Yu-gi-oh watching Pyramid of Light... and into Bleach with... Memories of nobody-
huh-

♻️ I would love to hear about any scrapped ideas!
Aaaa, thank you! I appreciate your asking. <3 [From the WIP Procrastination meme!]
♻️ A scrapped idea for your current WIP
As far as Ideas, capital I go, I feel like I haven’t scrapped very many—they’ve either stayed the same or did not previously exist and have needed to be developed. Where the big changes have tended to be is how the ideas are executed. I previously shared a idea of form/style here. But I do have some additional baby ideas, lowercase i, that got cut that I can share!
baby idea: The Gotei dress code does not govern jackets.
Rukia’s first and only autumn at the Academy, what she learned in her lessons and in the schoolyard had coalesced around a half-explanation of this: By and large, Soul Society functions under the assumption that if you matter enough to be known, everyone should know exactly who you are, and where you stand in relation to them. However, there are instances where to be clandestine is a benefit, and the further you get from the center, the more likely that is. The average Hollow doesn’t care about the difference between an unseated shinigami and a captain, much less their color-coding. But where the monsters are older, and smarter, camouflage becomes powerful in ways that announcing rank is not.
This had felt immaculately stupid back then, because even with all the students dressed like confetti once winter rolled around, even though no one was “ranging” anywhere, it was still obvious who everyone was, and how they felt you stood in relation to them. But there hadn’t been any enemies in the schoolyard; just each other.
Now, Rukia cannot actually tell who she is looking at until
This was basically just lead-up to the idea that Rukia et al are off on a mission in the mountains in October, and it’s going to be cold, so they’re all wearing jackets, but the jackets are a bunch of random colors that don’t correspond to the usual/easy white/black Gotei dichotomy of color, because out in the mountains there’s no one to signify to, really. Which is all well and good, but the jackets just aren’t something any of the narrators care to remark upon, and people keep whipping them off to fight Hollows and leaving them places. And this whole reflective mode was off the pace of where the narrative was at here. Most importantly, I could not fathom why Rukia would be pulling out Academy memories at this juncture (or perhaps at any juncture), so it didn’t make sense for her to frame her observation in this way.
I think in the final version Rukia’s just like, yup, they’re in jackets and everyone looks like shit!!!
Actually, wait, here's the final version of these paragraphs, which I will include because the last sentence is definitely a dig at DiamondDust Rebellion, lollll:
The West Gate pops into view like an apparition, a trick of winding thoroughfares and blind corners. At its base, the rest of their party is waiting. They’re in kariginu, too, colorful in contrast to the usual Gotei black and white—like a fall wood, or a troupe of minstrels. There are only six of them, not including her or Renji, and Rukia imagines this pales in comparison to the traditional entourage. Before the war, even the transportation of minor artifacts of the nobility required a full procession.

Some DiamondDust Rebellion Thoughts...
There was one thing that annoyed me about the movie that seemed to be a repeating theme.
It is constantly said that Toshiro murdered Kusaka during their duel, but shows that the Stealth Squad were the ones to do the actual killing. All Toshiro did was use his sword to block Kusaka's. Never once did he swing it to attack.
And yet, Toshiro will go on for many years thinking he murdered his best friend. Toshiro was even willing to give up Hyorinmaru so that the duel wouldn't have to happen. He didn't want to fight the only friend he ever had.
Even Kusaka says that Toshiro was the one to kill him when he knows that Toshiro wasn't the one who ran him through! You'd think he would remember that little moment.
Am I the only one who wanted to smack Kusaka upside his dumb head for being such an idiot? His need to drag everything out and be super extra and dramatic ended up causing Toshiro to suffer a lot more than he already was.
He's a terrible excuse for a friend.

Bleach (Burichi) (2004-2012) including Memories of Nobody (2006), The DiamondDust Rebellion (2007), Fade to Black (2008), and Hell Verse (2010)
A young man who can see spirits is entrusted with the powers of a Soul Reaper. He trains to make himself stronger so that he can always protect his loved ones and stop villains and monsters intent on destruction.
I watched this series with the English dubbing feature on because it’s easier for me to watch without having to read and I rather liked the voice actor for Ichigo. I may return to the series and watch it with the original Japanese audio another time. The characters are all fairly strong and get little sections of back story which explain their motivations and make them more complex; this is quite consistent and things are referenced many seasons apart. The animation was pretty good and some of the effects look striking and pretty. There is also some humour which occasionally comes at odd times but the parts with Rangiku are usually amusing.
The stories can get a little repetitive on occasion when it’s mostly battling or training but they often lead to better and more interesting things soon enough. There’s sometimes a random cut-away episode to the characters having a day at the beach or something equally irrelevant which can be good or feel pointless. The conclusion of the main arc is drawn out for 15 seasons so it’s not a surprise that it ends a little disappointingly and quickly, for one thing we didn’t even get to see the level 0 Arancar get defeated or find out every Soul Reaper’s power by the end. The main one I was curious about is the little pink-haired one that Kempachi always carries around.
One of the most appealing things about the series is that all the characters have special powers that we gradually learn new things about and they develop as much as the characters. It’s entertaining to see rules set up for their abilities only for them to be broken or subverted in some way to defeat an enemy as the villains sometimes get more confident about what they know about an opponent’s weapon only for it to be wrong.
The earlier films are the better ones because they have more coherent stories and use more of the characters. The later ones are still good but are a little too predictable. The main issue with the series which gets a little irritating is that most of the trouble could be solved by the characters just talking to each other more instead of needlessly keeping secrets. There are times when things are exploding and people are getting hurt but the head captain doesn’t bother to tell anyone that he knows exactly who is doing it because it’s a bit embarrassing.
6/10 -Just a cut above average-
-The show is named after the creator’s favourite Nirvana album.
-Rukia was the first character to be drawn for the manga and was originally intended to be the lead character in the series.
-The Soul Reaper guard near the end of Hell Verse who is outside the medical tent is the same one that guards Rukia in series 2.

Bleach Movie 2: The DiamondDust Rebellion - Hitsugaya is accused of treason and gets surrounded/stabbed while on the run. One of my favorites because he’s hiding a tragic backstory as to why he turned traitor, so extra angst.

Amongst the Tree Roots and Snow
BLEACH Anime Celebration: Day 5 - Something Old, Something New
Rating: K
Setting: A short time after the TYBW arc.
Synopsis: While on a walk together, Granny shows Toshiro a place she recently rediscovered.
AN: I’ve wanted to write something with Toshiro and his grandmother a while now. This set of prompts helped me finally come up with a story idea. Be prepared for Toshiro being a real grandma's boy (and a little angsty)! Also, as I was listening to these tracks while writing, I recommend listen to ‘World #05’ and all three ‘Recollection’ tracks from The DiamondDust Rebellion OST, and ‘Going Home’ from BLEACH’s first OST if you can, or just some relaxing music. Hope you enjoy it!
__________________________
Autumn leaves fall from the swaying tree branches and on to the dirt path. Toshiro brushes a small pile of them out of the way with his foot.
“There’s no need for that.”
He looks over his shoulder at Granny, who smiles despite chastising him.
“You always taught me to be careful with leaf piles,” he says. “There could be small animals in them, remember?”
“I remember,” she chortles, “but that was hardly big enough for a rat to hide under.”
His face starts to burn. “Well, you never know.”
She pats his cheek, cooling his embarrassment. “Thank you.”
They resume their midday walk. He can’t remember the last time they did something like this, let alone were in the Junrinan’s forests together. When they didn’t use this route to get to stalls and shops in other districts, they’d go foraging off the path and spend hours combing through the forest.
As if reading his mind, Granny says, “This brings back memories.”
He smiles softly and hums in agreement.
She looks around, taking in the flora all around them. “It’s a nice day out too. It’s been rather cold lately. Have you been keeping warm?”
Toshiro hides how her question affects him. She’ll never stop looking out for him, even when he has everything a Soul could want to stay warm. “Of course. What about you? Do you need more fire wood? I can go get some afterwards.”
“No, it’s all right. Ayumi-san collects some for me in the mornings.”
“Good.”
“And how has Hinamori-san been? I haven’t seen her in quite some time.”
“Hinamori is busy, but she’s doing well. She said she’d visit next month.”
Granny nods, her smile widening. “I’ll look forward to it. And Lieutenant Matsumoto?”
“…Matsumoto is Matsumoto.”
“Now, now, what has she done to make you speak like that?”
“Not her paperwork, for one.” He sighs, taking all of the huff out of him, and smallest smile returns. “I think ever since the reconstruction efforts ended, she been going back to her old self.”
Granny nods. “It took a lot of work, I know. It seems, though, normalcy is returning.”
“I suppose so.”
They continue on in silence, the only sounds around them being the rustling of leaves, their footsteps along the path, and the call of birds. For Toshiro, it’s a true sign of the peace that has reigned over the Soul Society in the last ten years. He’s about to share this thought with Granny when she comes to a stop at a bend in the path.
“What is it?” he asks.
She looks over her shoulder at him. “If you’ll indulge me for a moment, I recently found somewhere I’ve been looking for.” She steps off the path and starts to trek into the trees. Toshiro is quick to follow, and she leads them through at a slow pace.
“Baa-chan?”
“I’m certain this where it is.”
“Where what is?”
He can hear her grin in her reply. “You’ll see.”
In that regard she stills treats him like a young child. He remember countless times where she would hide something from him, and he’d ask over and over what she was keeping from him. In the end, she would reveal what it was, and somehow, the reveals never ceased to surprise or delight him.
Now he rolls his eyes in with a smirk, going along with it.
It’s a short while later when they come to a stop. Toshiro can’t see anything significant about the area, other than a tree that’s taller than most in the area and a bush of purple flowers he didn’t recognise.
Granny half turns to him, but she keeps her gaze on a spot between the roots of the large tree. “This is where I found you.”
The world stills. Swallowing against the sudden dryness in his mouth, he steps closer to her. “How do you know this is the place?”
She rests her hand against the tree’s trunk. “There aren’t many trees in the forest like this one. At the time, however, it was much smaller.” With her other hand, she gestures to a gap between the tree roots.
“I found you there, wrapped in nothing but a blue cloth,” she says. “It was winter, and the snow had started to fall. I’d been foraging for mushrooms when I saw you. You gave me quite the fright when you started wriggling, from a distance I almost thought you were an animal. It’s not until you started to cry that I realised you were a baby. As I got closer, all I saw was a tuff of hair poking out from the blanket.
Her smile widens. “I’ll never forget when you pushed your hand out. It was at that moment I knew I couldn’t leave you there. I took you out of the forest and back to the Junrinan.”
It’s not the first time she has recounted this story to him, but being here, at the place she believed she found him, it strikes him as deeply as the first time he heard it.
She walks over to the tree roots and looks into the gap where she’d found him. It’s tiny, small enough to fit an infant into. He’d come up with many theories about why he was abandoned in the forest, from his parents sensing he was dangerous to them simply not wanting a child, and every single one told him the same thing at the time: he was unwanted, a cold individual who others feared.
“Why did you want to find this place?” he asks, trying to talk around the lump building up in his throat. He puts a hand on the trunk, half to balance him and half to keep himself standing.
“Because it has always been important to me.” She steps closer and rests a warm hand on his shoulder, forcing him to meet her gaze. “I have watched you grow from that baby I found in the snow to who you are today. You can be brash, but you’ve always been a sweet boy, Why wouldn’t I want to know the spot where I found my grandson?”
Before he lets her see the tears welling up in his eyes, he brings her into a hug. She’s stunned for a moment, but then she chuckles and brings her arms around him.
“How unlike you, Toshiro-kun,” she remarks while patting his back, “but thank you.”
thinks about the parents he’s never met for the first time in over a decade. He’d never known a part of him still remained here, wanting to know why his parents left him. He never knew he needed to see the place has found him either. He’ll never know the answers nor will he ever come to know his biological parents in person, but he knows this elderly woman who found him and loved him and raised him, and that has always been more than enough.
Perhaps it's because he has found his, but despite everything – the uncertainty of why they abandoned him, what they looked like, if there were even alive in the Soul Society –on some level he hopes they are experiencing some kind peace.
“Thank you, Baa-chan.”
