People You Want to Know Better (Tag Game)
Tagged by @parallelunivrses thank you so much! I always love doing stuff like this :)
Last Song: The Last of the Real Ones by Fall Out Boy
Currently Watching: Watching on my own we have Monster (about 12 eps in) and The Bear (season 2). I also wanna start watching The Batman (2004) here soon and will at some point start Degrassi: Junior High too
As for watching with other people, my roommates and I are watching both Only Murders in the Building (season 2) and Glee (season... 5? I think? We are dragging through this last half tbh and at this point just want it to be over but also refuse to quit before we’ve seen it all. Sunk cost fallacy and all that) We also keep up with most shows on Drop Out!
Currently Reading: For comics I’m reading Red Robin (rereading it lol) and Dial H for Hero (local comic shop had almost the whole 2019 run for 50 cents each and I figured I would give it a shot). Due to CPA studying I haven’t been reading many traditional books, but I’m hoping to start The Locked Tomb series once I’m done with my exams :) I’ve heard a lot of great things about it
Latest Obsession: It’s firmly back on Tim Drake and to a lesser extent the entire batfam. Mid to late 2020 I fell off a bit and was actually quite normal about him for a year or so... and then it hit me like a ton of bricks again and has not let up since lol
Also, I’ve had another Film Reroll flare up where I think about the podcast a bit too much lol I think the only thing that keeps me from having a true, solid obsession with the Film Reroll is the fact that, unfortunately, outside of the podcast itself there’s not a bunch of outside content to engage with. Trust me, if this thing had a bigger fandom, half of my posts would probably be about it ahaha
Tagging: @catrillion @gucciguccigarbage @shownusfool @myopinionisimportant @theoreticalli @twacn @afoxnamedmulder @sodapopmermaid @thesunlikehoney and anyone else I didn’t tag but who wants to share!!

2019 was a damn good year for comics looking back. HOXPOX, Immortal Hulk, Jimmy Olsen, Second Coming, Dial H for Hero, Far Sector. Every year has great comics if you look hard enough but that’s quite a few id call some of the best of the decade.

Comics I Read Today
August 7
X-Men #81 (1998, Marvel)
Gambit has returned to the X-Mansion, leading Rogue to question her heartache over their breakup. They are attached by Kali, who has been ordained by the prophets to rain death upon the earth. Amazing art by Adam Kubert and superb writing by Joe Kelley make this an exciting chapter in the X-Men saga. The gatefold cover has a recap and bios of all the characters. Every comic should do that. Every issue could be someone’s first. Video game ads for G Darius, Parasite Eve for PS1 and generic Pokémon ad.
My Rating: 8
Showcase ‘96 #2 (1995, DC)
Three stories of the DC Universe: Steel and Guy Gardner:Warrior, Circe and Metallo. Each tale is okay but nothing that I want to follow. Metallo is the best of the bunch. Video game ads for Earthworm Jim 2, CutThroat Island and Revolution X for multiple platforms.
My Rating: 5
Dial H For Hero #3 (2019, DC)
This was virtually unreadable. Sorry, it sucked. No video game ads.
My Rating: 1

Here’s an obscure one from Dial H for Hero (2019) #12! I’ve always liked the little thought bubble, and I like how it’s included as a key moment in a multiverse full of hope.
The full page for reference:
The Candlelight Oath:
For reference I am collating every occasion I can think of that the candle oath comes up, particularly in terms of the wording of it. I know I'm skipping over some but I'm also restricted in terms of how many images I can have.
"-And swear that we two will fight together against crime and corruption and never to swerve from the path of righteousness!" "I swear it!"
(Detective Comics #38)
"Swear that you will fight against crime and corruption...and never swerve from the path of right!" "I swear it!"
(Batman #213)
"If you're to be my partner, you must swear you'll avenge their deaths by devoting your life to warring on all criminals!"
(Detective Comics #484)
"Swear that you will fight against crime and corruption -- and never swerve from the path of justice!" "I swear it!"
(Untold Legend of Batman #2)
"--I knew I wanted to be exactly like him: a sworn avenger in the cause of justice!"
(Secret Origins #13 1986)
"Batman and Robin." I made a promise to my parents that I would rid the city of the evil that took their lives. That remains unchanged. Only now...I am no longer alone.
(Batman: Dark Victory #13)
"Think, Bruce, you remember--'to fight against crime and corruption, and never swerve from the path of justice...?'"
(Batman: Gotham Knights #11)
"But then I took an oath. To carry on in my parents' memory and the legacy Batman had created. From that light I watched our world grow..."
(Dark Crisis #1)
"This is the beginning of a new life, son. Of service to others. Of helping." "I--I am...I vow to help...to make the world a better place. And I swear that I will fight against crime and corruption...and never serve from--" "The path of righteousness."
(Batman #138 2016)
I love the words. I love the echoes and repeats and the patterns of what people use and where they focus their attention.
Also I die over Zdarsky's version actually, it's one of the best of all, especially as it has Dick saying the words himself, rather than swearing to affirm Bruce's words.
Some of the early ones are so very heavy with exposition: Detective Comics #484 is hilarious in terms of going"'your parents died! as did mine! Let's swear to fight crime to avenge their deaths!" Good job there, Bruce. That's the level of subtle also heavily noted in the time you asked Tim if you could adopt him and started with "your parents are dead. You have no one."
It's interesting in terms of its placement, because the oath almost always comes when Bruce first takes Dick back to the Cave as Batman, and reveals his identity. Before Robin. Before Dick begins training. During the hunt for Zucco.
But it's so important to both Bruce and Dick, and echoes for both of them. It's a password that they use. And Dick's memorised it, as if he's said it many times in remembrance of the first occasion.

The Hero Within
DIAL H FOR HERO #1 MAY 2019 BY SAM HUMPHRIES AND JOE QUINONES
SYNOPSIS + REVIEW
Miguel is a thrill-seeking kid that was once saved by Superman. Since then, everything felt boring to him.
Working on his uncle’s food truck (his uncle had to take care of him after his parents’ death), he meets Summer, a perpetual runaway girl who just wants to leave this town. Both seem to click very well but he is interrupted by his uncle who wants him to work on the truck.
We later see him doing a stunt in the canyon, (in front of other unknowns), but his stunt fails and he is free falling down the canyon.
While coming down, an old dial telephone materializes next to him. To save his life, all he has to do is dial “H” for hero. When he does this, many other characters in the DCU feel that somebody has dialed (including Alfred).
He suddenly transforms in “Monster Truck”, a Liefeld/Quesada kind of nineties super-hero.
When he comes back to normal, he seems to be surrounded by the police, and he is rescued by Summer, who stole his uncle’s food truck to leave the town. Now on the run, the phone rings, Miguel answers the call and a voice tells him that he must protect the device, as the agents of the Thunderbolt Club will go to any lengths to get their hands on it.
Dial “H” for Hero comes back every few years, usually in an iteration that has little to do with the one before (the New 52 version was worthy of Vertigo). This, however looks a bit more the Jaime Reyes incarnation of Blue Beetle, although, it doesn’t seem to be that much Hispanic (as his uncle is pretty much american).
What seems kind of obvious to me, is that right now, Miguel WANTS to be a super-hero. But he has to LEARN how to be a good one. And in the end, he’ll probably have to make great personal sacrifices to be one. Just my guess :p
As a first issue, it’s perfect (seems to me that the “Wonder Comics” imprint is full of big hits). It feels fresh, young, exciting, dynamic, and it looks awesome. That nineties hero rendition, with ink interpolation included, feels right out of an image (or X-Men) book. I think this is a very good outlet for Joe Quinones’ skills.
While I was reading the story, it reminded me of two characters: Shazam (Capt. Marvel), and Thunderbolt. So I was kind of intrigued by the revelation at the end of the Thunderbolt club. Not sure what’s gonna happen, because Johnny Thunder is appearing in Doomsday Clock, and he seems to be an important character there.
I think DC needs more “Wonder Comics”. Balanced, of course, there is still a demand for grim and gritty and legacy characters. But this latest (re) introduction is as good as the rest of the other titles under this imprint (although Young Justice is the one with all the eyes on it, as it seems to be breaking continuity).
I give this book a score of 10

I wish they sold the 2019 Dial H for Hero series in like a deluxe edition trade. I basically would like any 12 issue comic available in a single trade idk. It’s convenient!

365 DC Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
March 8th - Dial H for Hero
The H-Dial or ‘Hero Dial’ is a magic amulet that resembles an old rotary telephone. If a user dials H-E-R-O onto this device, that person will be transformed into a superhero with unique powers for a brief period of time. Robby Reed had discovered the amulet in a hidden cavern in Colorado and used it to act as a superhero, having numerous adventures. Later, the H-Dial ended up in the possession of teenager Miguel Montez. Miguel and his friend Summer have utilized the powers of the amulet to protect it from The Thunderbolt Club (an organization made up of former H-Dial users who desperately seek to wield its awesome power once again). Having finally defeated the Thunderbolt Club, Miguel and Summer have continued to use the H-Dial in their adventures and have become adjunct members of the teen hero group Young Justice. Robby Reed and The H-Dial first appeared in House of Mystery #156 (1966); whereas Miguel Montez first appeared in Dial H For Hero #1 (2019).
