"Lost your faith, huh? I never really had any to begin with, I guess. Never believed in any of it... God, the Virgin Mary, that life begins at 40, and that people are all just basically good inside." "Pretty soon, we'll be the same person." "See how nice things turned out?"

the original 1955 diabolique is soooo fuckass and boring. the movie is simply too long. the remake follows the original almost beat by beat but it's 10 minutes shorter and the two leads have fantastic chemistry. toxic yuri makes everything better. and also the scene of them killing the husband is better in the remake because they struggle more. and also the mistress doesn't seem to love the husband at all in the remake. to me it seems just like she had very conflicting feelings about the wife and really really wanted to hit that

a simple favor is a fun movie definitely in the realm of absolutely batshit insane twisting plots that i always enjoy i held off on watching it for so long cuz i was like anna kendrick cant play gay to save her life this will diminish the quality of the weird gay subtext incomprehensible plot movie and yeah she really did not rise to the challenge really should have been gayer would have been a perfect movie if it had like half the budget and an insane gay person helming it which like i guess thats just breaking the girls but id like more movies like breaking the girls it would also need actors who can more convincingly play gay but i was not gonna say breaking the girls was really doing great in that department they werent not gay or anything but like very 2010s gay side character in a network tv show kinda energy anyways the end was disappointing because after the conversation at the cemetery i was like wow are they gonna work together and frame the husband and it was playing the music from the opening of but im a cheerleader and i was like wow is this an intentional reference to the fact the movie is now getting gayer but thats actually the has watched way too many random gay movies part of my brain talking assuming this is like well known common knowledge etc so the ending a bit of a letdown but you know an enjoyable 2 hours nonetheless i think we really do need to keep throwing more weird gay les diaboliques references at the wall until eventually someone makes the perfect movie.. we are still waiting
#i know 1996 diaboliques remake is like gay in the end rather than the weird fakeout ending#but i also dont know if its either good or crazy and it needs to be one of those things

what are your top 10 lesbian movies the people want to know
omg now this is a good question i organized this chronologically
les diaboliques 1955 - based on a play, i just love cluzot and think two women murdering one's lame husband so they can run away together is awesome
je tu il elle 1974 - similarly love chantal akerman so so so much. did you know this was one of the first films to have an extended erotic scene between two women ??
desert hearts 1985 - 💜 the first mainstream lesbian film to have a hopeful ending and adapted from jane rule's famous pulp novel this is one of my absoluteee favorites. the costumes, the soundtrack (donna dietch sold her house to afford the rights) and the project!!
go fish 1994 - i watched this more recently bc i was intrigued by rose troche who also wrote for the L word and it's amazing. part documentary, part fiction all in black and white. perfect example if new queer independent cinema
the incredibly true story of two girls in love 1995 - also watched this recently and lovedddd it. so joyful and playful and sweet it feels like eating a big bowl of ice cream
bound 1996 - awesome lesbian sex mafia mob outlaw couple plumbing film shot like if the matrix was goodfellas. yea
the watermelon woman 1999 - like go fish i love the self mythologization in this and of course all their 90s outfits and the video store setting
but i'm a cheerleader 1999 - 💜 i learned the work dyke from this movie when i was 13 and watching a torrent with chinese subtitles
saving face 2004 - romanticdramaedy about love and an overworked doctor's relationship with her mother! so cute and sweet
drive away dolls 2024 - i wanted to choose something more recent and tbh i really enjoyed drive away dolls. it wasn't too serious, it was fun of queer slang, the costumes were great

Hello, Sine!!
I just watched 'Diabolique' (1996) and I loved the dynamic between the 2 female characters in it and was wondering if you had watched it?
If so, what did you think of it?
Hello there.
I have watched it, yes.
Just like with "Nathalie…" (2003) and "Chloe" (2009), I prefer the original French film, i.e., Clouzot's "Les Diaboliques" (1955).
Although the remake is a feminist thriller, it is unsubtle and leaves nothing to the imagination. The original film is much more suspenseful.
That being said,
Isabelle Adjani was--as usual--amazing and carried the remake. I love Stone, but there are certain scenes where I found her a little over the top.
I do not dislike the different ending, that they got away with it. In the 50's, subtextually queer characters (and villains) on film were almost always punished and/or died in the end.*
*Fun fact: in Pierre Boileau's novel (the films are based on it), the ladies were also lovers and their plan was to to drive the abusive man to suicide in order to collect his life insurance and run away together. The films heteronormalized the plot.
Personally, I'd love to see another take on this story. In this post-MeToo era, someone should give it a go.
