I love your artwork, it has this sort of nostalgic feel to it that I fine so comforting and relaxing.

I was wondering, have you ever done art of supernatural horse creatures? I remember seeing art a while back of kelpies and it reminded me of your style, but I forgot to check who the artist was.

A lot of my inspiration comes from older art so it makes sense that my art has a nostalgic vibe.

I have done art of supernatural horse creatures, mostly bäckahästar/kelpies - which I have included bellow - but I have done other stuff too including illustrating a Norwegian folktale about an enormous magical horse called Dapplegrim. I have painted Sleipnir and an undead horse. I have also made a short comic that is bäckahäst inspired.

Hello!

I am an artist (@dharmaart) who just so happens to love both art history and horses. This is mainly just for me so I'm delighted by anyone who shares my interests and likes what I am doing. My goal is also to bring more attention to less well known artists from the past.

The avatar image I use is Ut i vida världen (1907) by John Bauer (1882-1918) and my header image is The Years at the Spring by Lucy Kemp-Welch (1869-1958).

Quick sidenote, I will also be posting artworks of other equines like donkeys, mules, and zebras on this blog. The blog is just called @horses-in-art-history because I mostly post about horses.

Can I ask about the process of your works? TT

It depends on what I am doing. Since my animations generally reach more people and I've written about my paintings here, I'll explain my animation process as well as a bit about drawing and sketching.

I animate on a4 pieces of paper and I usually draw four measured out lines on each page to give me a guide for placing the horse. I start by drawing each frame one at a time all the while trying to keep the size/proportions consistent. I usually use a video reference that I play at 0.25x speed (if I can) and pause it at evenly spaced times to pick the frames I'm drawing. Since I'm creating a loop I do this until I get back to the point in the run cycle I started at. An easier option is to draw Muybridge's photographs.

I scan the pages, download the images on my phone, try to crop the frames evenly so they match (this is the hard bit), then finally put the images together using the giff function in my phone's gallery.

When I am drawing and sketching I try to be intentional with the lines I draw and keep the lines quite straight and angular. With horses drawing them in this "blocky" way gives a good sense of their general form and anatomy. It's a good general rule to start with lighter marks and gradually go darker, line weight is also something that's good to use and be intentional with. Detail should be something you add later, concentrate on the big shapes first. Practicing sketching with something like a plain ballpoint pen - or anything else you cant erase - can be a good way of getting better at using fainter marks and avoiding detail earlier on.
