Nightshade Network

My past friend, @lbds137, has recently come under fire for speaking out on her ban from Nightshade Network, or NN; it is a witchcraft Discord server, and not one of small population.

While I by-and-large enjoyed my time there, I feel the need to stand by her and speak on my experiences, as well-because I, also, was banned.

I had been present for some time there, and I’ll admit, I raised controversy with my brash and blunt opinions; I did not do so on purpose, and I did not do so with any intent to hurt anyone (and nor did I). However, at one point, the owner and leader of NN (whose name shall be unmentioned for reasons of professionalism) needed to take a break of some days, the amount indeterminate. Their life was getting in the way and stressing them, and that’s fair; it happens to everyone.

My sticking point was their decision to, while they were gone, shut down the server. Just close it, for however long they decided to be gone. I add that the staff team was always present, kept up with the rules and their breakages (however much or little I agree with them, and the style of moderation present), and were a fairly large team. They were fully prepared to be able to handle the server while the owner was away.

Instead, the owner, for whatever reason (though I assume to retain final say and control) decided to just shut it all down for a time.

I don’t know if this happened, because I was banned shortly after.

I brought up the points above in their #general-that there were mods, the community would be disenfranchised, that it was unfair to deprive their server members their community, etc.-and, shortly after, was ridiculed and attacked by the owner, the mod team, and various community members because my points made the owner feel bad.

I shut up as requested, though was attacked and berated repeatedly even after I stopped bringing up my points, and then summarily banned a short time later.

TL;DR: The owner of NN wanted to close the server for however long they took a break for, despite a competent mod team in place, I rose a point about why this was bad, got harassed and banned.

Sigils

Historically sigils are an ancient practice dating back to Neolithic spiritualism. Sigils have taken many forms throughout the countless centuries that they have been employed by different religions, occult practices, and spiritualists. Many modern witches utilize sigils by creation of a symbol that is fueled by the intent of the creator to help channel their magical energy. This method of sigil creation was popularized by Austin Osman Spare, an English occultist, who wrote about sigil in his book The Book of Pleasure (Self-Love): Psychology of Ecstasy (1913). In this book he stated, “… desire are united to his purpose by the use of Sigils or sacred letters.” This references to what most modern witches believe to be the foundation of modern sigil magic.

Modern sigil magic has been expanded upon many times by different authors however the three most common brands of modern sigils are “Symbolic” Sigils, “Alphabetical” Sigils, and “Geometric” Sigils. Symbolic Sigils are sigils derived from the creator’s mind and the symbolic meaning of the image that they create. An example of this would be a sea witch using sigils which appear to be waves or flowing like water. Creation of a Symbolic Sigil is primarily based upon the principle “the form fits the purpose” with little, if any rules to create a standardized sigil. On the other hand Geometric Sigils are created by utilizing a tool called a Witch’s Wheel or Witch’s Circle and following a certain pattern to draw lines between the different letters on the circle. Depending on the method of moving from one letter to the next the sigil can either be very curved and looping or it can be very angular. Geometric sigils often have a more steadfast set of rules since the user follows a specific pattern, either one of their own design or one that they have found, to create sigils. Alphabetical Sigils are the last form of popular modern witch sigil. These sigils are similar to Geometric Sigils due to the fact that they follow certain creator-set rules. The creator woulds start with what they desire, such as “I want to be healthy.” The creator would modify the phrase by removing spaces, double letters, vowels, or other unnecessary components. They would then utilize the leftover letters to craft an Alphabetical Sigil. Alphabetical Sigils can vary from person to person as each witch follows their own method of omission of letters to create their desired sigil. The creator can add further stylization to fit their own personality.

An older form of sigils are often titled Solomatic Sigils, Pentacles (not to be confused with a pentagram), or Talisman Sigils. These sigils, like modern sigils, are charged with intent however they also call out to either angels or demons. This form of sigil originates in the Key of Solomon (1300~). These sigils often feature Latin or Greek writing and intricate designs as well as being highly specific to the angel or demon that they invoke and celestial body from which they draw a portion of their power. Solomatic Sigils are much more ritualized involving being created at certain planetary hours, only placed upon virgin paper or other specific surfaces such as a quicksilver(mercury) talisman. Many ritual occultists view these to be extremely powerful sigils due to the intricate preparation needed and the invocation not only of their own magical energy but an external entity as well.

A little bit about me: I’m an Aries, and I work mainly in the fields of spiritwork and magitechnology. What is magitech?
