I get that Mae put a strain on their family and ultimately put them in danger but maybe don’t blame the girl trying to get away from people who mutilated her and are trying to kill her? And maybe don’t blame Suzanne for being the only person trying to help her? Like imagine being mad at someone for trying to save the life of a minor. They could have stepped up and took on more responsibilities around the house and had some compassion. But I guess it’s excusable when the girl who suffered unimaginable trauma makes you a little uncomfortable. Oh is her behaviour strange? Is the girl who grew up in a cult and knows nothing else socially awkward and weird? I wonder why that could be.

Honourable mention to Isaac for getting mad at Jules for getting another friend and for wanting to go to a party (which she invited him to). And he was mad at and disliked an abused girl for….I guess existing? I hate how the show portrayed Jules as the bad friend here when she literally did nothing wrong in their relationship?

I was just thinking. We all know Mae gets large doses of victim blaming and gaslighting, but Suzanne gets a healthy dose of it too.

She's treated like a failing mother by her family, the narrative, and (some) viewers for... having interests outside the house? Because heaven forbid a married mother dedicates less than 110% of her time and energy to her husband and kids.

Not to mention, her work is objectively good (helping abused kids). Meanwhile, her husband basically gets a free pass for jeopardizing his family's financial future with a highly risky passion project.

And for a time until the finale, their manipulation succeeds and even Suzanne starts to believe she has to neglect Mae in order to be a good mother.

i watched devil in ohio and it was really weird and messed up how the show basically villainized a female character who is a cult victim for a horror factor/plot twist

Dear Hollywood,

STOP IT!! STOP. IT. STOP vilifying abuse victims, i cant fucking take it anymore. stop making them the bad guys. stop making everyone hate them. when i see that shit all i see is a writing/directing crew that is too ignorant to understand the complexities of trauma and the abused brain.

when you vilify a victim character youre teaching EVERYONE WATCHING that vilifying those you dont understand - or those who are so abused that they dont yet understand nonabusive society -that the victims are the bad guys. victims are TRYING THEIR BEST to adapt AND recover.

not to be talking about Devil in Ohio like half a year after the series came out, but......

Mae is a cult survivor from a misogynistic cult. She's consistently quiet, eager to please, and happy with whatever crumbs of kindness comes her way. The only times I remember we see her be even kind of antagonistic to someone is when she's with the uber Christian foster family that she sees as dangerous.......

and in defense of Jules, when Helen makes fun of her hair. One of the few times she stands up and it's on Jules' behalf.

But yeah the traumatized girl who's been tortured by her family is super bad and Jules is correct to be affected by the invisible Hate Mae Beam that's centered on the Mathis family.
