Ask Comp 9/1
Anonymous asked: has sally been introduced to cursed tavros yet?
Tumblr media
[ cursed tavros jumpscare :D ]
Cursed indeed - but mind you, I don't think I could do much better. My handcraft skills are nonexistent!
Anonymous asked: ol tavvy is down with the clown ;o) Anonymous asked: Please, if you will, imagine if when Vriska kissed Tavros, he told her that he was already dating Gamzee.
Heh. I really do think Gamzee x Tavros could have worked out, at least until Gamzee lost his shit. Hell, even if Gamzee did lose his shit, he'd probably still be less of a threat to Tavros than Vriska was.
Anonymous asked: Did you notice Gamzee referenced Earth in his rap? ("6 trillion hemos all up on one rock bleeding as equals") How do you think he learned about it? Some weird pre-game precognition or just his stoned mind being accidentally right?
Tumblr media
This isn't necessarily a reference to Earth - but it wouldn't surprise me if it was, because Gamzee's cult seems fully aware of the existence of Earth.
Tumblr media
The 'paradise planet' referenced in Gamzee's intro is stated to not exist yet, which is exactly how the narration refereed to Earth in Hivebent's intro. I believe that the 'rowdy minstrels' he's talking about are literally ICP, although he clearly isn't aware of that fact.
@wizardlyghost asked:
Tumblr media
A sentiment shared by Eggman, every Space Player, and the villain of Muppets Most Wanted.
Anonymous asked: Now that you've passed where fedorafreak's gray, serviceable hand-held computing device's battery has died, you might appreciate the following short piece of fan art: www tumblr com/vastderp-placeholder/7741061457/savior-of-the-texting-world-rise-up
The fucking implication that the phone is the Player in this scenario is obliterating me.
Also, its God Tier form has wings. Was it a troll all along, or are wings a symbol of divine apotheosis in phone culture, too?
@clueless-rarito asked: Heeey paranatural reference! Hell yeah!
Is anyone else totally stoked to see Eightfold again? I know I am!
Anonymous asked: bilious sick 😭
English's trick made our Bilious sick. :(
Anonymous asked: One of, if not my absolute favorite, quotes/moments in Homestuck is Karkat’s speech to Jade about his failed frog breeding here. Just such a wonderfully tragic moment that stuck with me since the first time I read it.
Tumblr media
In a comic chock-full of great lines, that last one might just be the best so far. This was one of the last scenes before Act 5's true finale, and it was an excellent pick.
@drakethedeep asked: One theory I've heard about the Denizen's Choice that tend to headcanon, Is that the choice is to be happy/free or to matter. That much as how God-tiers only grants survival by never having an impact, the denizens have thier playes coose between seeking their happiness and survival, or to struggle to achieve things that while objevtivly monumental, might not be worth the sacrifices needed to achieve it. I like this theory because of how it themes to fit the themes of Sburb.
I really like the space you're playing in, but I'm not so sure if all the Choices we've seen would necessarily fit this interpretation. After all, Davesprite implicitly chose the 'survival' option when he first met Hephaestus, and he's not exactly a happy camper. He didn't end up particularly free, either, since he was almost immediately bound to a Sprite, and later to the Battlefield.
I guess you could say he 'mattered', because he is he reason the Alpha Timeline exists the way it does - but, technically, everyone's actions contribute to the Alpha Timeline being the way it is. I definitely think there's something to this theory.
Anonymous asked: Without the Door to actually enter the universe, all you've done is make a really big frog.
I guess, when you think about it, there's not really anything they can do with their universe without that door. I suppose they could just fly towards their frog and hope for the best, but somehow, I don't think that'll achieve much.
@morganwick asked: Of course, even though he wasn't fooled by Gamzee using Terezi's "voice", Karkat still showed up on the roof anyway. Perhaps he decided he couldn't take the risk that Terezi was actually there and Gamzee might catch her unawares.
Tumblr media
Gamzee's been having a lot of fun 'impersonating' Terezi lately. Just like before, I don't think he ever intended to fool Karkat with his transparent ruse - he just wanted to unsettle the guy. It worked.
@morganwick asked: If Typheus is the mailman, does that make him PM's favorite Denizen?
Maybe it makes him the head of her mail service!
We never saw any other mail Carapacians, and I kind of love the idea that they were operating out of a Denizen's Palace the whole time.
@bladekindeyewear asked: You said: "Mind you, I don’t know if it’s necessarily always a good or heroic thing to allow a Sburb Player full agency over their actions, nor is it necessarily a bad thing to restrict them, in certain cases." Oh I'm completely with you there. In fact, you might DEFINE Heroism as denying agency to those who would do ill, in part. This would make both "Heroic" and "Just" deaths result from trying to stamp your own intentions upon reality, halted by others. Neutrality would be ineffectual.
That's certainly part of heroism - but to me, it's not even close to all of it. A firefighter, for example, is heroic in ways which don't involve another person, as their only real 'opponent' is nature itself.
I personally define heroism as the will to do good, in situations where doing good requires bravery. 'Good', of course, is a fairly slippery concept, though, so that definition is just as ambiguous as any other.
Anonymous asked: Doctor Who anon here. Doctor Who has no canon for purely practical reasons. It's so massive - there's the show, but there's also the Big Finish audio dramas, the DW magazine comics, the Radio Times comics, the IDW comics, the Titan comics, the Virgin novels and short stories, the BBC novels and short stories. And no one owns all of it. The BBC don't even own the daleks or K9. And each piece of media will freely contradict others. No one has the right to decide what's canon, so they just don't. It's also because the people running Doctor Who the show have a deep respect for the extended media. In the 90s, it was the non-BBC licensed, fan-led projects which kept DW alive. Russell T. Davies, first showrunner of the modern era, wrote Virgin novels, so did Mark Gatiss. Nick Briggs, modern voice of the daleks, is the head of Big Finish. So they didn't want to decanonise that stuff, but they also don't want to be beholden to it when writing their own stories. So the fanbase tends to operate on tiers of canon. Basically something can be assumed to still be part of the show's continiuity until the show contradicts it. Big Finish would generally be considered the next highest "tier" of canon. The Doctor Who magazine comics probably wouldn't contradict the show, but the show could contradict them any time. The old books and comics are dubious. But that's all just fan categorisation. Officially, nothing has been deemed canon or not. In fact, rather amusingly, the only thing that has been explicitly deemed "canon" by the BBC is the Doctor Who: Battles in Time card game. That's officially canon. Nothing else. Not even the show.
I think I've heard of 'canon tiers' before, in the context of the Star Wars fandom. I think it's a good way to delineate how 'true' a given event is considered to be, especially in a large, complex shared universe - but at the same time, being consciously aware of these tiers might hurt your investment a little.
You'll never be able to escape the fact that your favourite stories or characters are effectively fanfiction, at least from the perspective of higher tiers. They have no influence whatsoever over the more ''real'' part of the story, unless they're promoted its tier some day.
I do like the idea that all the other Doctor Who stories are fanfiction of the card game, though. That's definitely going to be my canon, from now on.
@morganwick asked: Well, back in Act 4 you said that John and Dave would make S-Tier if and when "John [threw] aside his passivity to do something heroic, and…Dave [would] finally drop that poker face and do something sincere", which is why I pegged the suicide mission conversation as when Dave might make the jump.
I think, on reflection, it's almost always a heartwarming event that catapults a character into S-Tier.
In my opinion, that's one of the most impressive feelings that a work of fiction can inspire in you, mostly because it's really hard to get you invested enough for it to hit properly. Homestuck's pulled it off an extremely impressive number of times already, and we're only halfway finished!
Anonymous asked: It is so fucking awesome to see a new reader in the year of our lord 2024 2025 who's actually like. Engaging with the themes of the story. Lotta people just see it for the memes or the "totally random" plot but some of the shit you're reading into what's happening is like. Eerily similar to actual Hussie commentary. Gold star for reading comprehension, you do not piss on the poor Anonymous asked: Your homestuck liveblogs are lovely and insightful and make me remember a lot of details of the comic that have been lost to time. You will comment on something and I'll go "oh huh homestuck was better than I remember it being." Thank you <3 @honestlyvan asked: Truly your liveblog is the best kind of re-experiencing the experience. I'm surprised at how much your thoughts and reads parallel mine, it's kind of fun to see someone else's deductions go along the same routes. I can't wait for you to get to the Truly Horseshit portions of the plot (and I say this lovingly, I think you're in a great position to give us a real raw read on them without having to deal with the various Mega and Gigapauses) Also -- you keep pointing out a shitton of foreshadowing I didn't catch until my second readthrough. I can't wait for you to get to the bits where it applies and be like "son of a bitch", I think where I'm in the reading of your backlog and where you're in the reading of the comic you've passed at least one of those bits already :D @worldweary-walker asked: The liveblog is so cool. It's a lot of fun seeing you put things together, and the posts where you come up with three completely right conclusions and two wrong ones always amaze me. Impressive work!
Thank you so much! I know I say this a lot, but a lot of these sentiments are exactly why I like reading liveblogs myself. I'm just really glad I can do that for others.
I can totally understand why someone would just read Homestuck for the memes. I wouldn't have been nearly as analytical if I'd read it as a schoolgirl, and a lot of the 2010s fandom were even younger than that!
@divineerdrick asked: Now we have multiple explanations for what is wrong with the kid's session. Vriska has made herself responsible for Jack's rise to power, Karkat believes he gave Bilious Slick cancer, and Gamzee created the harlequin doll that would torment John and prompt Jack's rage-fueled act of rebellion. You've already suspected that Doc Scratch probably has multiple plans in play at once, and we can see that here. It seems he insured, through multiple causes, the kid's universe has always been doomed. Gamzee, as usual, seems to be the wild card. But he's acting out during a crisis of faith, a faith tied to Alternia's twisted social structure, which Scratch seems to have had a hand in. So despite how random Gamzee's actions appear to be, it's possible Scratch managed to seed even this seemingly unpredictable action.
I think Scratch probably did 90% of the work in making Gamzee go ballistic, from multiple directions at once. Looking back, it's shocking just how much of the comic was Scratch's doing.
'Caused' is a loaded phrase in Paradox Space, but what's happening is definitely what he planned.
Anonymous asked: It kind of seems like Rage as an aspect is evil, no? Do you think an aspect can carry an inherent moral weight? If not, what are the neutral meanings of aspects that seem to, and if so, how do you feel about it?
Personally, I doubt that any of the Aspects have a moral alignment - not even the scary-sounding ones. After all, you can Rage against tyranny, or bring Doom to a corrupt institution. Yeah, Gamzee is using Rage for evil, but his perception-shielding could just as easily be used to hide an innocent bystander from an aggressive Underling.
I think that more or less any ability can be used for both good or evil. The only real exception would be a power that's deliberately designed to be irreparably, comically evil. 'The ability to torture everyone for all eternity' would be one of those powers, but Homestuck's Aspect abilities would not.
@worldweary-walker asked: have you read Kill Six Billion Demons?
I have not! It's on my long and constantly growing list, which means I'll get to it between now and, uh, 2096.
Anonymous asked: re: the ancestors' story. WHAT IF WE ALL JUST CRIED like. the sheer transition from inane antics to the. that @corporalotherbear asked: There's a very popular fanmade version of the sufferer's final sermon and following vast expletive, voiced by a man that would go on to be the english voice actor of Izuku Midoriya. I can't add links to asks but if it's spoiler-friendly then your vetter can probably send you "The sufferer's last sermon"
Oh, I kind of love this interpretation. It really sells just how unwinnable the Sufferer's rebellion truly was.
@wolygan asked: I forgot how she is so happy when she is running away. This Girl is still able to believe that good is coming. Except Lord English won't let that happen, no matter what. @wickedsick asked:
Tumblr media
That was possibly the fastest you have ever been proven wrong about something
That poor girl. She suffered just as much as the Signless did, but she'll only be known to Alternia as a monster - and unlike Troll Jesus, no one will ever mourn the Handmaid.
Anonymous asked: the sufferer cult is definitely independent of the juggalos! the use of the word sectarian to describe the war waged against the signless's beliefs is not a coincidence, imo. (we also see that highblood is most often used to specifically describe purplebloods). they're just two different religious organizations. given that the grand highblood was a juggalo man/subjuggulator and occupied significant power it seems to suggest that clown religion was a Big Thing among the purplebloods, which would not truck with the signless' cult being so small and secretive. there's one theory that part of the reason the neophyte was sent on mindfang's case was bc the GHB (given that mindfang mentions the neophyte was sent by subjuggulators specifically) knew she was a secret sufferite and wanted to get rid of her. mindfang does talk about how it seemed like they were giving up on her case entirely by sending just one neophyte (granted this is partially bc she underestimated her). it would track that while they definitely wanted to get rid of mindfang, they also were fine with the neophyte dying. this also follows with the fact that after mindfang gets out of that trial, she manages to persist without being caught right up until her death at the hands of the summoner. were they happy that the neophyte got killed, enough to stop putting much effort into mindfang's capture?
I think the Highbloods probably did set Redglare up. I speculated that it was possible when we first heard about her death, and that was before we knew she was a Signless cultist.
Also: lmao, do you remember when Hussie told us that the Juggalo Cult was 'obscure'? That's starting to feel like something that was quietly retconned offscreen.
@clueless-rarito asked: In case you like to know, "Dolorosa" is meant to evoke the spanish word "Doloroso" meaning painful but changing the O for an A turn it feminine.
Dolorosa; in other words, the woman in pain.
Fucking hell, she deserved so much better. It's amazing how much bleaker the Ancestors' lives were, compared to their descendants. Modern Alternia is bad enough as it is!
@lon-kasi asked: Fanwork recommendation: The same guy who did the EoA5 reanimation just did Intermission 2 as well. Like, less than six hours before I sent this ask. It's incredible.
Yessss! These are amazing.
My favorite parts are all the extra touches that weren't in the original animation, such as Rose beginning to realizing how badly she was tricked - or Jade, unused to her own powers, almost knocking John on his ass while she teleports him.
Anonymous asked: Now that you've seen what a Reckoning on Skaia looks like, you can see why Karkat was rushing Kanaya to get their frog done. Despite jumping the gun, skipping the lore elements and just killing their way to the end, the troll kids never had enough time. Especially since, now that I'm thinking about it, if it wasn't the Reckoning then it probably would have been Jack as the "time's up, now turn in your work" event. @marinerofthestars asked: With the revelation that Alternia was built to and ended up speedrunning an Sgrub/Sburb session to catastrophic effect (great job reading this far, btw), how long would you expect a ā€œstandardā€ session to take?
We've got two different asks here - one saying that normal sessions are meant to be shorter than Hivebent's, and the other saying they're meant to be longer.
I honestly don't know which I believe. It feels unrealistic for a Sburb session to take months, but Scratch really did seem to be saying that the trolls were extremely effective Players, implying most sessions take longer to beat. Maybe the reboot session will clue us in a little?
Anonymous asked: ā€œHow do you expect to out run me, When I Am Already Here.ā€ Is such a hard line, and it’s completely missable in the alt text for the site banner. I know a lot of people missed it when these panels dropped. I remember HS being considered super unique because of how much the comic messes with formatting things like that.
I was super close to missing some of that scene, even though I'd already been warned about the alt text. There was just so much going on at the time, I almost didn't think to look at the banners.
@royalvorpal asked: "I thought words would be exchanged" How do you expect them to talk when they are in person?
pffffffffffffffffffft
Alright, that one fucking got me.
@bladekindeyewear asked: "But no, apparently not, because it took Karkat zero words and sixty seconds to completely shut Gamzee down. Now, don’t get me wrong, that’s incredibly impressive - but what did he actually do?" If you look back IN RETROSPECT at some of what Gamzee has been telling Karkat, it almost looks like pale flirting, like he was actually WANTING him to do this behind his threats. p3361: "FTC: i wonder if you can all be at with me in time and make me get my reconsider on?" Anonymous asked: You may not like it, but this is what peak moirallegience looks like.
Tumblr media
Yeah, this really does make that exchange read as a little flirtatious.
Still, is this really how a moirallegiance is meant to work? Are moirails really expected to risk their lives to halt their prospective partner's rampage? This is starting to sound more dangerous than a kismesissitude!
@bladekindeyewear asked: I'm not sure how well it applies to the revised Homestuck website and it's probably impossible in the collection, but you could view any past/future page in any CSS format the site gave you with a keyword, like the black-on-green Doc Scratch format. So when Andrew did the "SNOP" to SBAHJ-mode, he was intentionally giving us a tool to view the ENTIRE SITE in SBAHJ mode.
Tumblr media
There's a 'theme override' button, but I need to finish Homestuck to unlock it. I guess the comic's theme will change in more spoilery ways, later on.
Anonymous asked: Dolorosa/Mindfang is the true kicker of the ā€œvriska keeps ending up in mirror relationships to her ancestorā€ belief, bc its the one where there is NO way vriska could know that shes in a mirror relationship. Eridan- orphaner dualscar and mindfangs romance was in the journal. Tavros- she knew about the summoner. But while there are hints to the dolorosas identity- sharp teeth, lower blood color, and a very vague if you stretch it hint about horn shape- no way vriska could have put those pieces together!!!
Man, it's still so fucked up that the Dolorosa went out like that. I still think it's at least remotely possible that she revived as a vampire, but I'm not gonna kid myself - her story is over. We're not gonna see her.
Anonymous asked: You've mentioned "ratfic" and something called "the Methods" before, is that something you've read?
If I could write an essay about Steven Moffat, I could write an entire thesis about Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality - but it'd be radioactively critical, and it feels mean-spirited to just post a rant about something unprompted.
If people want my thoughts in detail, I might stick them on the sideblog later - but for now, I'll just tell you that if it wasn't for that fic, XAE A-12 Musk would never have been born. Not a joke.
Anonymous asked: i love the complete about face on gamzee lol. "clearly the fact that he's gone nuts is something wrong with the timeline" gamzee is revealed to be responsible for lil cal "actually fuck this guy"
If we do ever recover the original Gamzee, it's going to really suck for him to face his friends. After everything he's done, will anyone ever really trust him again?
@elkian asked: Love the Exiles. So glad nothing bad happens to them, ever, (I assume the pause before the third s175 post is bc you, like me, took a break to cry over AR hesitating to kill his friend :,(
I was so bummed, guys. Carapacians don't have ghosts, I assume - so the Exiles, sans PM and maybe WV, are gone forever.
The Red Miles will probably have obliterated their corpses, so we can't even prototype most of them - but I'm holding out hope for Waywardsprite.
Anonymous asked: heh, you aren't alone in preferring god tier dave without his hood. i was around for when cascade dropped and wasnt able to watch it straight away due to the various troubles, but one of the first things i heard about it was people talking about how stupid they thought dave's hood looked.
I know, right? Like, yeah, it definitely says 'knight', but Dave's got great hair, and it feels like a shame to cover it.
@bladekindeyewear asked: "PCG: SHE WAS CONSTANTLY FIXING MY FUCKUPS. PCG: ROBOTS FROM THE FUTURE ALWAYS COMING BACK TO TELL ME HOW SOME HASTY SHIT I DID WITH FROG BREEDING OR WHATEVER WOULD MAKE IT BE IMPOSSIBLE TO WIN. PCG: MY OWN PERSONAL MISTAKES PROBABLY ACCOUNTED FOR MORE DOOMED ARADIABOTS THAN ANYTHING ELSE." Now that the Tumor's revealed for the precision device it was, it's also clear that Aradia, likely following the Horrorterrors' instructions, FORCED them to breed the frog JUST RIGHT to create the Sun.
Yeah, the existence of that precision device really fucking threw me. Whatever it did, the frog cancer probably was deliberately engineered to cause it - and I think it was engineered by Scratch, rather than the Horrorterrors. He was also talking to Aradia during the session, and this event was key to his plan.
Anonymous asked: (And one more ask from the person without a tumblr. -DJ) The thing is, Scratch could have just said "you must create the Green Sun, it is essential for the existence of the multiverse, not doing so will create a paradox". But either he chose to trick them, by only but saying "true words", just for fun…or there is some reason telling them about their true mission wouldn't work - RM
Either is possible, and it's pretty much impossible to say. That said, the Vast Glub is proof that he does just like messing with people, so I'm going with the former answer.
Anonymous asked: (forwarding another ask from the person without a Tumblr account -DJ) Do you think there are interesting parallels between Scratch and Tarquin from OOTS? - RM
Well, they are both meta-aware villains with extremely wide-reaching plans, and they're both pretty weird about women. Hopefully this means that Scratch's much cooler son will kick his ass in a later Act.
@bladekindeyewear asked: One tiny cute detail in Cascade I love is how when the Green Sun lights up in the distance for the trolls, Terezi tries to point at it, and Karkat gently takes her arm and re-points it in the right direction. XD
Shoulda brought the Smelloscope, Terezi!
Anonymous asked: The first time i read homestuck my shit bugged out and I literally just missed the entire scrapbook section and cascade. The SECOND time I read homestuck cascade gave me such a neuron firing high that only harrow the ninth has ever gotten close to
That's exactly how to describe it. Cascade blasted my neurons, in exactly the same way that part of Harrow the Ninth did.
@rwbypro asked: Ngl one of my favorite parts about homestuck is the fact that Doc Scratch Won, like he got Exactly what he wanted, and he played everyone like fiddles, one of my all time favorite villains in anything!
He did, the bastard! Scratch managed to pull it off without a hitch.
These are the exact kind of convoluted masterstrokes you want to see in a time-travel story, and I think English's machinations will only grow more intricate, going forward.
@sanctferum asked: The juggalo cult believes in a pair of mirthful messiahs rather than just the one, so if English is one of the messiahs, that's only half the equation. Presumably, the other messiah would be Scratch.
That works! I originally thought that the Messiahs were the two members of ICP, but let's be honest, they still could be. I absolutely would not put it past this comic to reveal that Lord English was Shaggy 2 Dope the whole time.
@sanctferum asked: So now that you've seen Lord English's true appearance: he's got a peg leg, and that peg leg is a golden cuestick, filling in the last missing piece of the Felt analogy - the one that moves the billiards around in the first place. For good measure, English's peg leg, single golden tooth and his garish coat give him a stereotypical pimp appearance, which is fitting given his treatment of his female servants so far (not to mention Scratch's own treatment of both the Handmaid and whichever female player he is manipulating at any given moment. He even explicitly uses the word grooming to describe raising Handmaid!). If there was ever a pimp for Dave to lock in his own crib while dropping it like it was hot, this would be him.
Ayy, you're right! I've been waiting for the Felt's cuestick since the Intermission days!
You're also right about the comic's villains. Scratch and English aren't just screwing over female Players - they've also been fucking with Mindfang, the Handmaid, the Condesce, and even Snowman. It's absolutely a pattern.
These guys aren't just cosmic villains, they're misogynist cosmic villains. Mundane evil and supernatural evil, all together in one convenient package of shit.
Anonymous asked: Now that we've gotten past this point in the comic- I just wanted to say I forgot Expatri8 was ever a name used to refer to Darkleer- mainly because all I ever see people refering to him as is Darkleer. And at first it kinda threw me for a loop when you called him that even though it's the only name you knew for him- Anyhows- You probably noted this at some point but only upper middle class to high blood colors seem to have name names, with some exceptions. Like, they're weird, but Mindfang, Redglare, and Dualscar are all fesable names. Meanwhile the lower bloods just have titles.
It is absolutely in character of Alternia not to allow lowbloods to have names.
Anonymous asked: Just read your liveblog over the last two days. I adore your analysis! I second that one person’s reccomendation of In Stars And Time. Also I reccomend the Blue Lips homestuck video, it’s lived in my head for ages. I’m 99% sure it’s safe to watch now? It’s about the events of murderstuck and I don’t THINK it references anything you don’t know. Anyhoot! I know you mentioned vriska being like Azula when you first started getting to know her. Now that you’re as far as you are, I’d like to argue… Vriska is more like Zuko, in a way? Like. The way she wants to wipe things clean, the way he wants to restore his honor. The way they both have a ā€œparentā€ that leads them to how things are, and for a while they cling to that as ā€œrightā€ and how things should be… One time I saw a post that Vriska is girl Zuko and Eridan is boy Azula and all the comments were arguing that no, vriska is Azula, but lowkey that post changed my brain chemistry and idk why people were SO vehemently against changing the genders of the characters in the comparison
I think Vriska works well as girl Zuko. You're right - they both started off under the thumb of an abusive parent, and they both try to 'fix' their past mistakes without understanding the wider context behind why they made them. Now, does this mean Vriska will also be getting a kickass redemption arc, which turns her into one of the comic's most straightforwardly heroic characters? Possibly, but I ain't holding my breath.
It's a little harder for me to see the second comparison, though. Like her brother, Azula was made into what she is by her horrible father, whereas Eridan became what he is on his own, with some assistance from Alternian culture.
Perhaps there are layers here that I'm just not seeing. I haven't read the Avatar sequel comics yet, so they might do more with Azula's character that I don't know about.
@mrjocrafter asked: I was trying to think about what the characters' moon alignment means in terms of their characterization, thought "Prospit dreamers are relatively passive while Derse dreamers are relatively active", then realized that's only true for the humans, the Post-Scratch Trolls' 6 Prospit dreamers (excluding Sollux, as his 'official' alignment, according to the Extended Zodiac, is Derse) are the more active characters. Then I realized that on Earth darkness and dark-associated characters are edgy and countercultural, while on Alternia light and light-associated characters are countercultural instead! Goddamn this comic just keeps coming back for more themes Also, I know you've compared Taylor to Vriska in the past, but she really strikes me as more of a Terezi. Beyond the surface level stuff (like going blind and then relying on a supernatural sense), Taylor, like Terezi has a strong moral compass but will twist it into pretzels to do the most horrific shit and there's a 50/50 chance she even regrets it afterwards. Meanwhile, Amy, who I think makes a much better Vriska, does her atrocities either under manipulation (like Vriska) or just does it without thinking about it and feels bad about it later (hey, also like Vriska). Also, Taylor Hebert and Amelia Dallon are coincidentally both valid troll names.
Yup! Which means Kanaya is a troll goth, which is still amazing.
And... hmm, I'm not sure whether I'd call Dave active or passive. He certainly acts more on his own initiative than John, but he also spends a lot of time getting bossed around by Terezi. He's kind of in the middle, really.
I do think Terezi's reframing of her violence as 'justice' is very Taylor-coded - and Amy is absolutely a Vriska, if we're working off the 'female, controversial, and morally ambiguous' definition given by a previous asker. Plus, well...
Tumblr media
...yeah. And let's not even talk about Ward. (Because I haven't read it.)
Really, all these characters are multifaceted, and you can draw many different parallels in many different directions. If I had the time, I could probably draw lines from each of the trolls to a different cape in the Wormverse - but for now, we must continue!
@morganwick asked: Bec's influence on Jack is so strong that not only is he reduced to following Jade around like a puppy, he kills CD for completing the mission he gave him and leaves Jade, one of the players he's supposed to be killing, on her quest bed, the nature of which he didn't seem to know about when it came to John. Bec = absolute king.
Bec is a king.
It really does seem like his influence over Jack is increasing as time passes. Is Davesprite going to get more birdlike, as well? Or is Bec just a special case because he's a First Guardian?
Anonymous asked: oh my god you really just cleaned the board with the last minute Dave+Rose quest slab guess??? Like. You were going on about other things and then you just casually mention "oh I guess this could happen too" like okay!!! Seer!!!!
Yeah, I'm pretty proud of that one. I was just thinking about how Aradia might help the Derse kids, once she'd met them at the Sun, and then it hit me: she's been in exactly the same situation, in exactly the same place, because of exactly the same sun!
Anonymous asked: dogtier IS in fact what the entire fandom calls her, if you came up with that yourself congrats on the authentic 2011 homestuck experience, move over carcinisation this is the new big thing in convergent evolution
I did, but come on. That pun makes itself.
Anonymous asked: Fun fact: the music used in [S] Begin Intermission 2, "English", is the same when reversed. It is an EXTREMELY excellent detail. And another example of Toby Fox being a brilliant composer. @sanctferum asked: English by Toby Fox is a really cool song in that its a musical palindrome, playing the same both forwards and backwards, as befits the titular entity. The whole Felt album it's from is based around creating songs with time gimmicks in them, so it serves as a very good semifinal track to almost close the album out. @emotionallyglued asked: You finally got to the part where our big bad man appears! Simple question to ask but I'm looking forward towards the answer: what do you think of Lord English's theme? Grandiose enough to fit a villain of his caliber or did you expect something more/else?
Oh, shit, that's cool!
I liked the song a lot. Sure, it's not as bombastic as the boss theme I went with myself, but it is much, much scarier. It was the perfect way to remind us that this wasn't really a victory - that English's plan went off without a hitch. Our heroes are still in terrible, terrible danger.
@morganwick asked: post/756751870755733504 Still think of Doc Scratch as "Big Cal"? @sanctferum asked: You've heard of Lil' Cal and Big Cal, now get ready for the deadliest and dastardliest villain of all: Biggest Cal. Anonymous asked: you've seen lil cal, now get ready for BIG CAL @lon-kasi asked: finally, Big Ca- well. actually. Scratch was Big Cal, wasn't he? so finally, Bigger Cal
Tumblr media
This is the real reason Scratch wouldn't tell Rose his boss's name - because if she'd known her manipulator worked for Bigger Cal, she'd have been too god damn scared to go grimdark.
Anonymous asked: T1ck T0ck goes the God Tier Clock. Its chime signals the Br8k of Scratch's H34D. And with the arrival of Lord English, he lets loose two great, Vast honk HONKS. Anonymous asked: Did you notice something about the English sequence? First, we see Scratch's clock. t1ck, t0ck. Then, his head breaks. 8r8k H34DS. He releases the Vast Honk. honk HONK.
Tumblr media
This motherfucker died to the very words that birthed him.
I guarantee you that this was deliberate on Scratch's part. He didn't need to foreshadow his plan so blatantly - but this horrible little troll knew that nobody would get the joke until it was too late.
bladekindeyewear asked: "S u c k e r s ." The bioorganic-looking Tumor opening up to reveal a precision device. Twice the mass of a universe. Doc Scratch fucking played EVERYONE SO HARD. We couldn't believe THEY CREATED THE GREEN SUN, so hard many of us watched without REALIZING IT. If you reread the talk Doc and Rose had from p3627 onward, the amount of TRANSPARENT DODGES AND WEASELING he did in that conversation to mislead Rose and the entire readership is so blatant and shameless, oh my fucking god!!! Anonymous asked: Not only did Scratch never said the tumor would destroy the green sun, he also specifically said they would travel to the green sun LOCATION, not to the green sun itself.
Tumblr media
God damn it!
Scratch may have been stoic on the outside, but you mark my words: he was absolutely roaring with laughter on the inside.
@sunbluethinking asked: Regarding 'a dozen or two sweeps,' you do have to remember that it seems like one sweep is roughly equivalent to two human years? (See Terezi's and Dave's 'I'm six' conversation, or whatever it was.) So my impression is that a dozen sweeps would be equivalent to 24 years and two dozen sweeps would be equivalent to 48 years. Still really short, but not quite as absurdly short. (Which actually reminds me of the question of the problem of rate of maturation in fictional races with different lifespans. (Dungeon Meshi touches on this, but) in the case of Homestuck, I think it seems like the trolls mature to adulthood at about the same rate. It's just their adult lifespans that are different.) @bellcarved asked: If my math is correct, "a dozen or two sweeps" is a range of 26 to 52 years. Still not great, but 26 would be the low end of the life expectancy, while they tend to live around half as long as a human.
So either Aradia was about to die, or she wasn't - but either way, she was always going to die young.
We still don't know whether God Tier stops you aging, do we? I have to assume so, because death by old age isn't really Heroic or Just, but I'd feel a lot better if it was 100% confirmed.
Anonymous asked: And here we learn the story of Jesus and the second coming- @bellcarved asked: Now you know the truth: Karkat Vantas is the second coming of Troll Jegus Christ. Anonymous asked: I doubt I'm the first to say this but, the story of the Signless is undeniably based off the story of Jesus Christ. @skelekingfeddy asked: you do realise that the sufferer is Troll Jegus right. the irons/cancer symbol is the crucifix. his method of execution turned into the main symbol of a religion. the dolorosa is mary. karkat is the second coming. hes literally just Troll Jegus lmao @sanctferum asked: turns out, Terezi was right all along. troll jegus was real after all, and he was indeed the best jegus. shame on you for not believing, Dave
God damn it, Karkat. You hate yourself so much, even though you're literally the second coming of Christ.
Tumblr media
And really does add weight to Terezi's claim that Alternia had the 'best' Jesus. Sure, says she's joking here, but... well, her Ancestor was a follower of the Signless, wasn't she? Could Terezi have inherited more of Redglare's legacy than we thought?
Anonymous asked: now that you know about the signless i recommend you take another read of karkat's long password on page 3972
Tumblr media
...huh.
It almost makes it seem like Karkat's vaguely cognizant of the Sufferer's life, the same way the Sufferer was cognizant of his pre-Scratch incarnation. Funny, that.
@morganwick asked: "For a bisexual alien, his shipping is awfully straight, isn't it?" Well, consider that when he drew that he was trying to adhere to the human model of reproduction with its explicit requirement of one person of each sex, as best he could from his alien perspective. Note that in the same conversation he's struggling to understand the "human taboo of incest". @manorinthewoods asked: Karkat's humanshipping is straight because John told him he wasn't gay, and presumably, he extrapolated. ~LOSS (28/12/24) Anonymous asked: Karkat's very straight shipping chart is the way it is because John's Not A Homosexual:tm:
I totally forgot I came to the same conclusion, back in that legendary group chat.
Man, Rose x Kanaya is really going to throw Karkat for a loop. He'll probably think that John was just bullshitting him.
@skelekingfeddy asked: steven moffat is a valid troll name Anonymous asked: You've brought it up too much not to ask, what did Moffat do that pissed you off so badly?
Once more, I am very tempted to make this a full essay, but I'll save time by just pointing to Hbomberguy's famous Sherlock video, which I agree with, like, 80% of - particularly the Doctor Who segment that I've timestamped.
In a nutshell, Moffat was always really good at generating intrigue, and building hype for future events - but as a showrunner, he never really delivered on his promises, and was very fond of handwaving established canon to the side. Pet peeve of mine, as you can imagine.
@rwbypro asked: We warned you bro, we warned you about the most important character @skelekingfeddy asked: carcinoGeneticist may have engineered the cancer…but terminallyCapricious was the one who made it terminal. ;o) @capribornio asked: Honk, honk :0) Heyyyy you reached the part where Gamzee became my favorite enemy. Forget Vriska, Jack and Doc Scratch - Gamzee may have his buttons pushed by the good ol' Doc, but he managed to make things worse than even Vriska got to (and killed more main characters, too!). Anonymous asked:Congratulations on reaching this point. So, Gamzee chucklefucked the universe. Crazy, right? @bellcarved asked: Gamzee's "Bard of Rage" title is looking more accurate than ever, now. His own rage lead him to put the clowns in John's dreams, which ended up inspiring the rage that made Jack Noir go to the lengths he did. Bardic inspiration, if you will. …also, this makes Perfect Jack a collaborative effort between Vriska and Gamzee. @capribornio asked: I feel like you get Gamzee much better than most livebloggers (and a part of the fandom, too). Gamzee is an orchestrator, on a much bigger level than any could have predicted. The silly little troll dissappeared once he got off the slime, got his religion destroyed, and got Lil Cal.
I told you, guys! I told you Bards were overpowered!
Yeah, he's already getting pretty crafty, isn't he? Maybe, instead of manipulating Gamzee like he did the girls, Scratch has actually been coaching him. After all, his own manipulating days are over, so maybe he saw fit to train a successor...
Anonymous asked: if vriska was presented with a choice about the creation of bec noir, it would have had to be before the veil because the trolls only flee into the veil AFTER bec shows up and wrecks their reward- and that's their first introduction to him. any choice she could have made about bec/jack after that would result in a doomed timeline, because it would break the loop. that's why it has to be before the veil. @manorinthewoods asked: What I mean is that the Choice that would have prevented Bec Noir is something that would have made Vriska change who she was, in such a way that she wouldn't later make Bec. Vriska's Choice that made Bec can't have occurred in the Veil, because there wasn't a Denizen to give it, so whatever it was, it must have been something to do with character growth that she failed to do. ~LOSS (28/12/24)
Oh, right, that makes sense!
Yeah, poor Vriska simply wasn't self-aware enough to make such a Choice before the Veil. It's interesting what-if, though.
@flambeaufelid asked: ICP albums liveblog maybe??? (Do people liveblog music reactions? They should.) Anonymous asked: Since you mentioned the possibility of having to listen to ICP albums to understand Gamzee better, I figured I’d better let you know that while reading a bit about juggalos, ICP, and ICP’s music does help with understanding Gamzee better if you’re unfamiliar with them (though I wouldn’t say it’s crucial), I don’t recommend listening to their music unless you’re comfortable with graphic depictions of gore, murder, and other forms of violence. (Speaking from personal experience here; I tried listening to them because Gamzee’s my favorite character and quickly realized I didn’t enjoy that.) Anonymous asked: I would say listening to icp is not necessary… I tried myself and failed not even half way through one album so I admittedly could be wrong but… I think it was never intended to be THAT serious
I checked out Miracles, back when ICP was first brought up, but I haven't seen any of their other music. It's probably not actually necessary to listen to the band to understand Gamzee, but I might still do it for fun, since the graphic content wouldn't bother me much.
@skelekingfeddy asked: according to hussie the fifth wall is what divides two narrators/authors @sanctferum asked: According to Hussie's comments, if the fourth wall is the wall between the character and the author/their audience, then the fifth wall is specifically the wall dividing omniscient narrators from each other. or something like that
I, uh, guess that makes sense. Presumably Scratch would be our second 'author' in this scenario, even though he's not literally another author of Homestuck.

The New Romantics
I am going to be making a series of related posts that I think will help explain the WHY behind all these cryptic messages and riddles and this "cross in poetry" or rabbit hole that the tortured poets created. This post is the first one in this series and it will be focusing on what I believe are the origins of this rabbit hole. For the past several yrs, gaylors and other fan bases have been analyzing the cryptic messages and easter eggs in Taylor and her friends' art. We have found countless connections, patterns, and foretellings, and most of us agree that Taylor and the other tortured poets are using red herrings and smoke and mirrors to distract the "fans" and general public while simultaneously breadcrumbing and gaslighting us true fans (The Blame Game). Many of us believe this is all part of the "performance art" or play the tortured poets are conducting but not many ppl have attempted to explain why they would go to such extremes and make up such elaborate lies. I am going to give my theory on what I believe is the reason for all the confusion and gaslighting and breadcrumbing—a theory of everything if you will.
As I stated in this post, I believe that everything goes back to the 1989 era. I think the reason why Taylor keeps drawing attention to the 1989 era is bc this era marks the beginning of the rabbit hole/mass coming out plan/revolution. This would explain this very interesting poem/riddle we received all the way back in Jan 2023 which highlighted Taylor's New Year's Eve performance on Dec 31, 2014 in Times Square where she sang Welcome To New York and Shake It Off ā¬‡ļø
youtube
I think it's very possible Taylor has been planning some sort of revolution since the beginning of her career. Change and Long Live are the main reason why I believe this.
Tumblr media
While many gaylors believe that Taylor started writing in a more abstract, allegorical, metaphorical way during the folklore and evermore eras, I think that Taylor has actually been writing in allegorical and metaphorical form this entire time. Many of these songs are of course abt literal relationships, but I also think many of them use literary devices like personification and symbolism. I think it's possible she used her personal experience w/ relationships or observed relationships in various types of media and channeled those feelings into allegories, metaphors, and symbolism; so even though many of her songs may sound like they are abt romantic relationships, they are actually allegories for other types of relationships like the relationship between artists and fans or between artists and the industry/Hollywood or between the artist and themselves. So she's essentially using romantic relationships and her specific experiences as an artist as frameworks to write abt much more general things. A great example of this is Gregory Alan Isakov's song Amsterdam. On the surface, it sounds like a typical love song, but if you dig deeper you'll find that it's actually a song abt the city of Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, and he is using personification to talk abt Amsterdam as if it were a lover.
So going back to Change and Long Live, if you view these songs through an allegorical lens, they can easily be interpreted as being anthems for queer rights and equality. The Genius annotations for these songs say that they're abt the challenges Taylor, her record label, and her band faced in the industry and how they were able to overcome those challenges and become successful. I believe this is definitely a valid interpretation of these songs (I mean this is what Taylor said these songs are abt), but I also believe it's possible Taylor turned this experience into an allegory so that it's not just abt climbing the charts and winning awards, it's also abt queer ppl and other oppressed groups shattering glass ceilings, making revolutionary changes to society, and getting equal rights. She's essentially drawing parallels between her experience as an artist having a breakout moment and oppressed ppl having their breakout moment and winning despite being underdogs.

This could be what Jack Antonoff was referring to when he tweeted this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"So they slowly over the course of a career let the world know." This to me sounds like playing the long game. Strategically making chess moves and taking 2 steps forward, 3 steps back and then 4 steps forward, 1 step back. It’s like the queen’s gambit. It’s a calculated risk that involves sacrificing a pawn to gain control of the board. When you’re a pawn in the system or someone in an oppressed group, the only way you can win against the powers that be is by beating them at their own game. Unfortunately, this means you will have to do things that are very out of character for you and that do not align w/ your true morals or values (The Circus -> ā€œyou contort your integrity into something so unrecognizable, the guests gasp in horror yet always come back for moreā€). Bc the narcissists you’re fighting against are cut-throat and ruthless and will cross any boundary necessary in order to get on top and gain control, you also have to take on some of these qualities. BUT what ultimately matters in this court of public opinion is your INTENTIONS (TTPD epilogue -> ā€œAs you might all unfortunately recall I had been struck with a case of a restricted humanity which explains my plea here today of temporary insanityā€). Yes Taylor and the other tortured poets gaslight, lie, beard, use PR, and do questionable things, but WHY do they do those things? What is the reason? Are they doing it just for fun or bc they think they’re invincible and can get away w/ anything? NO. They’re doing it bc the evil ppl they’re trying to take down are snakes who like to play 4D chess. They’re doing it bc they have to. It’s a game of empaths vs narcissists/manipulators/abusers; it’s survival of the smartest. Plus the tortured poets are trying to reach an audience of 8 billion ppl which means they are greatly outnumbered and need allies. This is where us true fans come in. They need us to be the dandelion seeds that spread hope and light (x)(x)(x). ā€œKatniss Everdeen, the girl who was on fire, you have provided a spark that, left unattended, may grow to an inferno that destroys Panemā€ (x). Yellow Flicker Beat -> the 9-27-19 & 4-1-20 ā™ ļø messages. Gracie's mom posted this story on 11-11-24 ā¬‡ļø
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ā€œAs the longest midnight passes, Daylight inches near. Each indistinguishable from the last, But together contrasts through years.ā€
ā€œUnraveling is precarious, Each inevitable delicate strand.ā€ // ā€œBe as clever as a god, Translating seeds of hope, There's purpose in confusion, Slowly untangling the many ropes.ā€ // ā€œBe wary of distraction, yearn not just for the grand ta-da, but heed the hushed murmurs that precede it. The real story unfolds not in the boom, but in the sigh, the slow unraveling like a magician's silk, frayed thread by thread…The real drama, the heartbreaking beauty of it all, unfolds not in a grand finale, but in the quiet unraveling.ā€ // ā€œUnder the velvet cloak of the theatre, the magician weaves a tapestry of wonder. Not with nimble fingers, but with whispered tales, each thread meticulously laid, leaving the audience breathless and beguiled.ā€ // "She'll patch up your tapestry that I shred" // ā€œYour braids like a patternā€ // ā€œI’m combing through the braids of liesā€ // ā€œDutiful daughter, all my plans were laid, tendrils tucked into a woven braidā€
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In other words, they’re using the boiling frog method. The changes happen so gradually that the frog (the fans and general public) doesn’t realize they’re happening until it’s too late and it’s cooked to death. Taylor started by switching genres; she moved from country to pop music which allowed her to express herself more freely since country music fans tend to be more conservative and closed-minded. Then she started becoming more explicitly queer and glass closeting. The 1989 songs Welcome To New York, Out Of The Woods, and Wonderland have queer coded lyrics like ā€œyou can want who you want, boys and boys and girls and girls,ā€ ā€œthe rest of the world was black and white but we were in screaming color,ā€ and ā€œtoo in love to think straight.ā€ Rep had songs like Dress, Gorgeous, and Don’t Blame Me which are very queer coded. The Lover era was essentially a coming out bc what straight person would make rainbows and gay pride the aesthetic of their album?? (Not saying you can’t be an ally but centering yourself in the community in that way if you’re not queer yourself is very questionable). Then she wrote songs like betty, seven, illicit affairs, dorothea, ivy, gold rush, tolerate it, cowboy like me, The Very First Night, Lavender Haze, Hits Different, But Daddy I Love Him, Peter, and Robin which are incredibly loud and make it obvious she’s queer and has been in a relationship w/ Karlie this whole time (since March 2014 according to kaylor lore).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Going back to the Jan 2023 poem, there are many interesting easter eggs in this poem. As I said before, I believe the 1989 era is actually the origin of this rabbit hole of cross referenceable songs, poems, movies, and shows. I believe Taylor might’ve titled it ā€œ1989ā€ (Taylor’s birth yr) bc this album was the BIRTH of the rabbit hole (this could also explain why Wonderland is included on it). It could also represent a REBIRTH and NEW beginnings which connects to what I said in this post.
Tumblr media
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the album begins w/ Welcome To NEW York and ends w/ NEW Romantics (on the deluxe edition). Moving to New York was a new beginning and fresh start for her bc she was able to be her authentic queer self there (you can want who you want). And in a more allegorical sense, this album was a new beginning bc it was when the New Romantics aka the Tortured Poets started executing their mass coming out plan or revolution that likely would’ve been revealed around 2019-2020 had the mastersheist and some other roadblocks not happened requiring them to pivot and abandon ship (1st and 3rd šŸŽƒ message, 2019 failed coming out). I believe that the original plan was to do the big reveal or ā€œatomic bomb dropā€ on NEW Year’s Day 2020 (or maybe on NYD of an earlier yr if all the setbacks and roadblocks hadn’t happened). This would explain the New Year’s Eve performance in Times Square as well as the surprise songs and 1989 TV announcement on 8-9-23 when Karlie ā€œBettyā€ Kloss was in the audience. She performed New Year’s Day and New Romantics as surprise songs bc the New Romantics/Tortured Poets are going to make a second attempt to drop the atomic bomb and crash the party like a record scratch on New Year’s Day at the end of this yr (the reticent volcano).
As I mentioned in this post and this post, capital letters are a huge part of this puzzle. The impossible puzzle is actually solvable if you use the capital letters on the back which allow you to piece it together in sections.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media Tumblr media

(a)ugust, (b)etty, (c)ardigan -> the alphabet + teenage love triangle where (a) is the ā€œfansā€™ā€ perspective, (b) is James’s/Peter’s perspective, and (c) is Betty’s/Wendy’s perspective; Camden, Augusta, Rockland (CAR) -> 3 songs on Gracie’s album TIWIFL which are the names of 3 towns in Maine which is where Gracie’s family is from -> CARdigan, ā€œcar again,ā€ Getaway Car, the hero’s journey, Augusta/Augustine/August girl in the teenage love triangle; Cassandra, Peter, Robin, Guilty as Sin? -> CPR(G) -> Charlie Puth Golden Retriever -> the capital G in the 2-20-24 šŸŒ‹ message and 4-11-24 šŸŽ message -> ā€œI stopped CPR after all it’s no useā€; Sabrina Carpenter’s Please Please Please which we all theorized is abt TK and the PR/bearding circus (Sabrina is a big part of this rabbit hole like Gracie) -> PPPizza (Hey Stephen mood board) -> ā€œHi (13, 31) Peter Pan - Tā€ secret message in Gracie’s Mess It Up mv -> PR, PR, PR, PUBLISH! message from šŸŽ anon -> Gracie wearing a jacket w/ a P and 13 on it (x).
The first 🫚 message we got emphasized certain words and letters such as SNL, NEW, TIME, and P (see this post which decodes it). SNL connects to the SNL sketch from Sabrina’s pov where she is encouraging ppl to speculate on her sexuality bc she is intentionally doing very obviously gay things but everyone still thinks she’s straight. She’s dropping breadcrumbs or small queer coded easter eggs and then entire loaves of bread or very explicitly queer easter eggs. And this connects to The Blame Game poem in For now she slumbers where the breadcrumb trail represents this rabbit hole of connections which is the present/gift that šŸŽ anon mentioned. ā€œYou have tied up your emotions with a big fancy ribbonā€ = present/gift šŸŽ. NEW is related to Welcome To New York, New Romantics, new beginnings, New Year’s Eve/Day, and the going anon messages w/ šŸ†•. Halsey’s Badlands album (released in 2015, ā€œfriends have friends of friends,ā€ ā€œI am the line of poetry you read years ago, but cannot remember distinctly enough to citeā€) fits perfectly into this puzzle and it has songs like Castle, NEW Americana, and Hurricane which all seem like allegories for this revolution which will affect politics, the music industry, and stan culture. Re Hurricane: I think Bed Stuy is code for the music industry -> ā€œThere's a place way down in Bed Stuy where a boy lives behind bricks, He's got an eye for girls who are 18 and he turns them out like tricksā€ // ā€œIn the age of him she wished she was 30ā€ // ā€œGot your whole life ahead of you, you’re only 19, but I fear that they already got all the best parts of meā€ // ā€œAnd I damn sure never would’ve danced with the devil at 19…Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first.ā€ 1989 and Badlands are both BLUE albums and they have very similar messages abt making revolutionary cultural and societal changes -> Miss Americana, a political song, has the lyrics ā€œwe’re so sad we paint the town BLUEā€ and Cruel Summer, which is on the same album as Miss Americana, has the lyrics ā€œAnd it's NEW, the shape of your body, It's BLUE, the feeling I've got.ā€ The revolution is the thing that is NEW and BLUE. ā€œThe blue will remain trueā€ or true blue šŸ’™šŸŒ§ļø (see this clip of Taylor talking abt hoax) -> Unfailingly genuine and loyal; being able to see past RED hair(ings)/herrings, illusions, and bait and switches (🫚 ginger = RED head/chaos/glitch/blood moon). I think another thing the blue and red might symbolize is the 2-party system we have in the US where blue = democrat and red = republican šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø (Miss Americana and New Americana). TIME in all caps connects to the clock imagery in Midnights and TTPD (5th, 9th, and 11th šŸŽƒ messages)(x)(x) and to the TIME person of the year article (see this post). The P by itself is related to everything I talked abt in the previous paragraph.
The last thing I want to analyze is the atomic bomb/Oppenheimer/doomsday clock connections. @corneliastvendor did a great job explaining some of these connections in this post and I want to expand on this theory. I highly recommend reading through this thread as well ā¬‡ļø
Tumblr media
ā€œ5 4 3 2 1, Happy New Yearā€ -> tick tick tick BOOM šŸ”„šŸŒ‹šŸ§Ø. Other gaylors have pointed out that The Great War on Midnights could be a reference to WW1 (this could allegorically represent the first coming out attempt, the 2019 failed coming out). This was obviously followed by WW2 which was when Oppenheimer developed the atomic bomb (this might represent the second coming out attempt; 2022-2025 is 3 yrs, Midnights was released Oct 2022). As I said before, I think this rabbit hole of connections has been in the works since at least 2014; and I think Taylor has been slowly involving more and more of the entertainment industry over the past decade -> ā€œFriends have friends of friends. I, for one, love my friends and their friends. I wonder if you know any of them?ā€ My theory is that by around 2019-2020 most of the entertainment industry had joined in on this mass movement/revolution. Therefore, most of the movies, TV shows, and albums that have come out since then are a part of this rabbit hole and can be cross referenced. I believe that Oppenheimer (2023) is one of them. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Taylor released Midnights in Oct 2022 which has supernova (death of a star), WW1/WW2, and doomsday clock motifs and themes and then we received a very interesting poem in Jan 2023 using these same exact motifs and themes and then Oppenheimer (2023) was released a few months later on July 21, 2023.
youtube
ā€œAnd the tears fell in synchronicity with the score.ā€ There were articles published back in 2022 abt Taylor writing the script for and directing her own movie. Well I think this ā€œcross in poetryā€/giant group project/TTPD IS the movie and we’re watching it right now (x)(x). It’s called Project Acorn bc…it’s nuts.

Wait, Zhao Yunlan's gun is actually a...?!
(I've never claimed production meta for @guardianbingo before, but after the amount of time and research I put in on this, I feel like I've earned the "Zhao Yunlan's Gun or Whip" square, haha)
SO. GUYS.
Maybe this is something fandom as a whole figured out back in 2018, but I, who didn't hear of Guardian until 2020, did not realize until now and I need to share the knowledge because when I finally noticed, I made an unholy sound.
I've tracked down where Zhao Yunlan's gun came from -- or at least, what it most likely started as. Not the in-universe dark-energy-maybe-uses-bullets-maybe-doesn't-device-that's-best-not-thought-about-too-long, but rather the actual fake-steampunk-revolver-that-is-best-not-looked-at-too-long-because-it's-awful prop.
Y'know, this disaster:
Tumblr media
I was actually working on a different Guardian Bingo fill and needed to look something up for continuity, so I'd flipped through a couple of episodes at super high speed trying to find a scene. As luck would have it, one of my skips forward happened to land on the scene I screencapped above, when ZYL confronts Zhang Shi.
Normally we don't get this clear (or this stationary) a shot of the godawful gun prop. I'd assumed all along they had just taken a plastic gun, glued some extra bits and bobs on it to make it look fancy, and hit it with some dry brushing (fun fact: you can watch the paint flake throughout the series; check out the top of the barrel and the side of the cylinder in the above screenshot!) to make it look #steampunk like the abandoned aesthetic of 25% of the show (as I've said before, I have theories about what happened in preproduction, but that's another post). This sort of thing is exactly what I've done for cheap cosplay weapons or background props for film work that aren't going to be seen at HD detail range.
Anyway, since the detail showed up better here than in other shots, I paused the video to look at the random screws and hex bolts (why??) they'd glued on it, since I recalled that I had the aforementioned gun/whip bingo square to fill.
That's when I noticed a detail that had eluded me before: An inverted V shape at the bottom of the grip.
Tumblr media
Only looking more closely, that's not an inverted V. It's a symbol that I've seen a whole series of variations of over the past 15+ years... every time there's a new installment of the Assassin's Creed video game series:
Tumblr media
So I started hunting. The principal weapons in each game turned up no matches, but eventually I found a gun that looks almost exactly like ZYL's:
Tumblr media
It's not a perfect replica, but the details are certainly all there: The stylized logo; the leaves and swirls on the grip; the feathers up the back; even the Victorian scrollwork beneath the barrel.
Tumblr media
Now, what's really interesting is that this gun isn't actually from the AC game series. It's part of an elaborate fan project by artist David Paget that started as a class assignment back in 2014. Even though it gathered a bit of steam in the AC fandom and generated a couple of forum role-play groups, OCs and the like, nothing about this artwork was ever connected to a real Assassin's Creed title. So why would there be a physical version of a gun that was only someone's fanart?
This is where the smoking gun (*rimshot*) goes missing, because I can't prove any of this, and it's been long enough that digging through the archives of the internet to find answers is going to take way more time than I can afford to spend on a project I'm not getting paid for. But there are two likely possibilities:
Scenario A: Some employee in a toy factory somewhere in China got told, "This Assassin's Creed franchise is really big, so we need to be producing replicas from those games to sell. Work up some designs." So the employee Googles "assassin's creed gun," finds David Paget's very professional-looking art, and whips up a replica to mass-injection-mold without realizing it's not actually from a game. Later, someone on the cash-strapped Guardian production team needs a gun to mod, and finds a cheap toy revolver on clearance after several years of sitting in storage because there was little demand for a replica of a gun that was never in a game. They buy several, glue hex bolts on the cylinder for reasons unknown, and poof! Instant pseudo-steampunk!
Scenario B: Other fans were involved in the design. Someone did build a 3D model of David Paget's design that's still available on Sketchfab (screenshot below), and it's not unreasonable to assume that other fans could have thought it looked cool and built 3D printable models. Later, someone on the cash-strapped Guardian production team needs a gun to mod, and acquires the 3D print file of one of those models from the interwebs. They mod the file a bit, print some, glue hex bolts on the cylinder for reasons unknown, and poof! Instant pseudo-steampunk!
Tumblr media
Personally, I find Scenario A far more likely than Scenario B, for two reasons: First, the hero prop looks more injection molded than 3D printed, especially given the technical state of 3D printing back in 2017-8. And second... Budget-challenged dramas do have a history of picking up bulk video game replicas and using them as cheap props. I made a post back in 2019 about the WoW Horde shields we spotted in a different drama...
Anyway, no firm answers about the source of the hero prop -- the world may never know! -- but we have now confirmed that in some alternate universe (possibly one of the first eighty?), Zhao Yunlan and/or Zhao Xinci is an Assassin.
Wait, wait, wait... *recalls mechanics of how the whole Assassin's Creed frame story is supposed to work* Uh... so... who wants to write a genetic memory explanation for the whole Kunlun -> [lots of lifetimes] -> Zhao Yunlan thing?
.
(I did actually check the catalogue of a friend of mine who makes replicas of props from various media franchises to see if he'd done a commission of the David Paget design, since a surprising number of his custom pieces actually do end up on film and television, but while he has a gorgeous replica of a revolver that actually appears in an AC game, it appears he has not done the Zhao Yunlan gun. I didn't really think it likely, since he's in the U.S., but you never know.)

As is the nature of Fandom this is the most active the fandom will ever be. The amount of fan art, fanfiction, discussion, theories, etc will only slow down in the coming weeks, months, years, till Arcane is considered a throw back. This is the most people there ever will be who are active and want to talk about it.
Public opinion will shift with time and changing cultural climate. You will not feel the same about it after seeing the end, let alone when it is in the rearview of your interests.
Eventually we will get 4 hour long video essays titled things like "Was Arcane Overhyped?" and "Arcane: a retrospective" maybe even "How Arcane failed" depending on how the rest of the show goes. regardless, opinions will mellow.
I suspect we will get a more nuanced views of Arcane's successes and failures and it will grow a more devicive reputation than the overwhelming love it gets now. Like how Shera was a darling when it was airing, but now is much more niche and criticized.
Arcane is one of the first shows that I am a fan of while it is still airing, I tend to watch shows late. This will be new to observe. For me the melancholy of anything I like ending isn't just the lack of content, or the inability to predict or hope now that the show is over and it is all we will ever get. Rather, the knowledge that the wellspring of fan made content will run dry.

James Lovegrove’s Sherlock Holmes books
James Lovegrove has written a ton of Sherlock Holmes books over the years (all Victorian era/canon era). I recently came across his latest series on the Hoopla app while I was browsing audiobooks that were available and the cover art totally roped me in. I ended up reading all three books in the newest series, all the Cthulu casebooks and a few in his earliest series. As far as I can tell, his books seem to be split into three different series based on the structure of the subtitles and the different cover art. I enjoyed all the books I read by Lovegrove for different reasons, but as I've already established in my other book rec posts, I mostly only care about the Holmes/Watson dynamic. So listed below are Lovegrove's Sherlock series in chronological order, which also happens to be, in my opinion, the order from least to best Holmes & Watson dynamics •ᓗ•
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Titan Books Series, 2013-2018
Tumblr media
I honestly just realized while researching links for this post that Lovegrove's books in this series are part of a bigger series with multiple authors (lol me), so I'm not going to list all the titles here, but they've been published from 2011-2023 and Lovegrove has written six of the 21 books. The other authors in the series are Guy Adams, George Mann, Cavan Scott, Mark A. Latham, Nick Kyme, Philip Purser-Hallard, and Tim Major. I read the first two Lovegrove books in this series last after reading his other SH series and the stories were pretty solid. One of them was a WWI-era story, which is a time period that I love to read about. The only thing I will say is that the Holmes & Watson vibe is a little too I'm-smarter-than-you-do-keep-up for my taste, which is why I took a break after reading the first two. But I wouldn't be against dipping back into this series at some point in the future and also checking out what the other authors have to offer.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The Cthulu Casebooks, 2016-2023
Tumblr media
There are four books in the Cthulu Casebooks series and the framing device is that James Lovegrove himself is a descendant of H.P. Lovecraft, which is how he comes into possession of Watson's secret writings on his and Sherlock's real adventures going up against Cthulu and other eldritch horrors. These books are not just a romp through a mashup of literary worlds, there are very real stakes and things get dark. I really liked these books, I'm not really a Lovecraft fan at all, but I have read some of his works and of course I'm aware of all the elements from his works that have transcended their stories and are really a part of general fantasy/horror fan knowledge. My best friend is a huge Lovecraft fan and we read these together, so they were able to tell me how precise the Lovecraftian elements were -- they were precise -- so Lovecraft fan approved. The framing device was my favorite thing, especially the author's note at the end of book three, which was a very bone-chilling way to end the book (that I was listening to on audio in my dark house at night -- oops).
Sherlock Holmes and the Shadwell Shadows
Sherlock Holmes and the Miskatonic Monstrosities
Sherlock Holmes and the Sussex Sea-Devils
Sherlock Holmes and the Highgate Horrors

James Lovegrove's Sherlock Holmes, 2019-2021
Tumblr media
This was my favorite series out of the Lovegrove set and also the first that I read. I felt like the Holmes & Watson dynamic was especially great -- and for me that means: they felt more like equals, there was just the right amount of bickering, and they cared deeply about each other. While I was reading these I took some short notes to help me remember what was special about each book, here they are below next to the titles. I would say that the covers and titles make the series seem like it might have fantasy elements, but it's more like they are debunking their clients outlandish theories before getting stuck in on the actual case.
Sherlock Holmes & the Christmas Demon (has a Three Garridebs-esque scene; Holmes dresses up as Santa!)
Sherlock Holmes & The Beast of the Stapletons (a continuation of HOUN complete with a short estrangement of Holmes & Watson)
Sherlock Holmes & The Three Winter Terrors (the dedication at the beginning of the book is to Jeremy Brett ā¤)
Goodreads pages (x) (x) (x)
Here’s my goodreads shelf with all kinds of Sherlock Holmes books that I’ve read or am hoping to read. Let me know if you have any recs! And check my pinned post for other book recs posts!

Do you hate Belos' fans?
If you want my honest, nearly unadulterated thoughts? Well, hopefully this is the last I'll speak on the subject. But in regards to the question; In theory? No. In practice? Well...
They've ignored the actual onscreen characters, dynamics, and themes that the show focused on in favor of building this elaborate fanon and AUs and fics and art of their dead white guys who were never meant to be the focus, hyped themselves up on this entirely offscreen dynamic, and then when the finale didn't deliver on their expectations they gnashed their teeth and turned on the show as a whole because they never cared about the show, just their white favoritism-fueled fanon for it. Because apparently their engagement with TOH hinged entirely on Wittebros, which makes me wonder how they even began watching the actual show to begin with.
These same people viciously turned on the actual protagonists because they never appreciated them as their own characters but as devices to prop up Belos and the Wittebro dynamic, so when they couldn't fulfill that purpose, they were deemed useless and badly written because these people who wrote essays about Belos being left-handed blatantly ignored Luz's explicit onscreen arc and then had the audacity to be baffled by the finale's narrative decisions, and just dismiss Luz as 'badly written' because they refuse to actually engage with Luz for Luz's sake and appreciate her as the main protagonist, who stands more than easily on her own without having to rely on Belos.
These people just genuinely can't seem to comprehend why the show would celebrate this compassionate brown girl over their racist white man, so they went out of their way to disparage Luz, downplay her and her achievements, act like they're spewing some hot takes by claiming Belos is a more interesting character, using whatever convenient excuses they can find; But while the excuse always changes for the situation, in the end it's always because fandom just looooves their bigoted white guys.
So then you have crappy AUs and redemption fics that lightheartedly torture Luz at her expense to explore Belos, or reduce Luz to Belos' sidekick that he secretly cares about, and/or portray Luz's anger towards him as some obstacle towards his ~healing and redemption~ (and you don't need the finale's explicit message to understand why this is so grossly tasteless because fandom hates women and PoC, especially when the two intersect as one character). It's genuinely abhorrent how Belos fans just choose to undermine the entire point of the finale and the show and even Belos himself for the sake of their made-up fanon version.
Like maybe if they actually paid attention to the show and engaged with it on a general level, I might take their complaints a little more seriously; But it's telling how Belos fans just ignored characters who weren't directly relevant/connected to the Wittebanes, until they were. So it's why I can't take it seriously when they disparage the crew for having different priorities because you can just tell they refuse to consider other angles, or go in with the predisposed notion of hating it. The Belos fandom hyped themselves up, and then blamed the crew for leading them on instead of accepting that their speculation on a mysterious character was wrong.
In fact, they're in such refusal to accept this, that some of them even go out of their way to peddle the stupidest behind-the-scenes theories I've ever seen; Particularly, the one arguing that Belos was originally meant to be a sympathetic and tragic villain and was written as such during the first half of the show's run... But when the crew opted to include the Collector in response to TOH being shortened, they just transferred all of Belos' sympathetic qualities to the Collector and left him a pure evil antagonist.
Because obviously, the crew never considered writing two sympathetic villains, right??? It's not as if we don't already have two former members of the Emperor's Coven who unlearn their abuse yet still have different personalities and backstories and dynamics and storylines. No, Belos was supposed to be sympathetic but they deemed that redundant with the Collector, so it's the Collector's fault and it's time to disparage their writing out of jealous resentment.
The criticisms just come across as in bad faith; These people aren't actually interested in critiquing the show. It's all insincere when they discuss how Luz needed to understand how people can become villains (they ignore her dynamic with the Collector and other characters), or how villains need to be humanized because yadda-yadda. It's not because they actually care about these things, it's just a convenient justification for why their white guy deserved better.
Because these viewers are otherwise more than willing to suspend their disbelief and analyze all of the little implications for Belos to understand him, but then refuse to exercise even a little imagination in discussing characters like Luz or the Collector, because it's easier to just dismiss it as inconsistent writing that didn't have any planning behind it. Because they resent these characters for 'taking away' from Belos' spotlight, and with baffling confidence declare any defenses or explanations of the point they're missing as 'stupid takes'.
They talk of how Belos needed to be humanized and have his motives explained, but they were; It's just that these motives weren't framed in a flattering light so that pisses off their sadboi narrative of someone who's afraid of being wrong for the sake of others, rather than only for the sake of his ego (Note that Belos doesn't hallucinate the witches and demons he murdered because he still doesn't care about them). I don't think we can have a meaningful discussion about how Belos was written without first acknowledging a lot of things, such as what is even your stake in trying to argue stuff like how he should've been able to survive, or joking about the protagonists being too dumb to finish Belos off???
I just find it telling how when people criticize how Willow and Gus were handled, or how the Collector went off into space at the end, I can actually understand where they're coming from... But with Belos fans, I'm just utterly baffled to the point where I genuinely wonder how they can think this and if I stepped into some alternate timeline. They claim fandom is guilty of the puritanism that Belos himself displays, but it's not about 'problematic' characters (I'm quite the fan of villains myself), but rather fandom double standards in weeping for Belos while demonizing characters like Lilith as 'getting off easy'.
People understand perfectly that Odalia is meant to be viewed under the lens of a capitalist upper-class suburban white woman who views her family as a status symbol, but then see how Belos is a satire of right-wing conservative white supremacists and the like and just sorta... sweep it under the rug in favor of re-framing Belos as a victim of these mentalities who was brainwashed, rather than someone who gleefully embraced them (regardless of any downsides he may have encountered) because the ideology ultimately benefitted his sense of self.
At first I reasoned that the favoritism towards Belos over Odalia is because one is more fleshed out and whatnot; But after seeing how Belos fans turned on Luz and other characters, I actually do suspect a lot of it is misogyny. It's not as if fandom has ever relied on canon to flesh out faves, these people are proof enough. I remember being baffled by the intense energy there was for Wittebros after Yesterday's Lie aired, wondering where that same energy was for other aspects of the show; At the time I didn't think much of it and figured it just wasn't for me, no judgment, but now? Ugh.
The lack of self-awareness for fandom's obvious habit and tendency with white dudes is just utterly baffling. I'd apply Hanlon's Razor to it, even; Sufficiently advanced ignorance is indistinguishable from malice! These people prove they're more than clever enough to understand and engage with it on a sincere level, but they don't because they don't want to because they're just salty!!!
In the end, it's all just fandom entitlement; Someone else compared Belos fans to those for Kylo Ren and Billy Hargroves and I can't un-see it now. The key difference is that the source material for Belos didn't bend over backwards to coddle and make everything about him; Which means canon didn't feed the beast, and that led to Belos fans not being as obnoxious as the aforementioned groups.
But their portrayal of this guy really is the same as people who put Kyle Ron in flower crowns. It's just this watered-down milquetoast dude they made up in their heads. And without any self-awareness they blame canon and the writers for not adhering to their personal RP headcanons for the character. These are the same people I've seen complain that the show didn't portray Belos' grief over murdering Luz, because it's the whole Oppenheimer effect where if we talk about white people's violence towards minorities, we always gotta make it about the white guy's angst and guilt while brushing past the actual victims and their feelings! Because you know what?
It's clear how much this fandom sleeps on Luz! She's such an incredibly compelling character, the show really is about her, and yet people sleep so much on her depth to talk about others! This is not exclusive to Belos fans, but I find them particularly symptomatic of this problem. Because again, we all know from fandom history (in addition to the explicit onscreen writing) that any claims of Luz not being interesting, or annoying, or flat, is just wrong; And even if it were somehow true, it's not as if that has ever stopped fandom before.
They'll see a female protagonist who is compassionate and say that nice characters are boring, unlike their guy; They'll see a problematic woman and call her an irredeemable bitch, while lamenting how nice characters are underrated and misunderstood as 'basic'. It's all the same. This kind of veers into my complaint about the fandom in general sleeping on Luz despite her being so fascinating, and it's abundantly clear that it's the racism and/or misogyny, maybe even ableism because intersectionality exists!!!
That's why you have people sweeping over Luz's trauma from Belos; They'll obsess over Hunter's because it's more 'intense' or whatever but again, that's never stopped anyone. People deeply understand, Belos fans especially, the psychological layers to Hunter's trauma and how Belos wormed his way inside his nephew's head... But with Luz, they just sorta dumb down their dynamic to whacky enemies on equal footing at times.
There isn't any of that same weight, that same appreciation, for how Luz suffered, and so there's none of the tact, none of the consideration of how they're portraying this, even in jokes or AUs; And that's why people have no problem with making Luz the bad guy for not understanding Belos, even though she did try, and got so terribly hurt for it. And she didn't even need to try to not owe Belos anything. It's why people make cutesy AUs where Belos is Luz's father figure, which is incredibly gross given everything Belos stands for and what he did to her; Because they just don't care about Luz's trauma, nor how gross and creepy Belos was to her. Because they don't care about Luz unless she can prop up Belos.
That's why you have comics taking a scene from Turning Red about a girl of color coming to a new understanding over her immigrant mother's pressures and expectations, and making it about Luz sympathizing with Belos. That's why you have people taking the heartbreaking moment between Camila and Luz in Yesterday's Lie, and making it about Philip and Caleb. It's why you have people insisting more on the parallels than what the two are opposite in, because they're oh so eager to mold Luz into Belos' (and Hunter’s, for that matter) platonic Manic Pixie Dream Girl, and then get angry and lash out at her when she doesn't fit their placid, palatable role; Just like Belos.
Seriously, Belos fans have a fucking victim complex and seem to genuinely think they're being subversive, oppressed underdogs for liking the violent white guy and writing essays about how he's actually femme-coded and neurodivergent and whatnot, and actually in deep pain and misery and needs guidance!!! They think they're oppressed for engaging with darker content and not for fandom racism and white favoritism and just being annoying, so then they come up with things like #BelosFansTakeOver like it's a fucking pride flag. They're Snape fans.
And as I've said before; A part of me was, earlier on, confused about all of the hype and energy. And I think people are drawn to that sort of energy because they see people having fun, and want to participate; So yes, I myself DID end up buying into it, at least a bit. Honestly I think I also had the problem of not fully letting go of my sympathetic Belos speculation, AKA what I personally wanted and not necessarily what fit the narrative the writers were going for; And so I ended up being a bit obtuse in misinterpreting some moments that are obvious in hindsight.
And I think it's partly because, again, the Belos fandom at the time still seemed so reasonable and chill, because they were still hinging on the expectation that their fixation would pay off, and thus had no reason (yet) to resent the show and its focus on Luz and co., and could even be charitable in their interpretation and portrayal of these characters; They liked Luz plenty until they blamed the show for throwing Belos under the bus for her sake, and then proceeded to do the fucking reverse.
And like. I DID actually consider why the finale was written the way it was, and apply that in reorganizing my understanding of Belos; Apologies if I'm patting myself on the back but like. It becomes so much more fun when you work with things. It's baffling because these people are more than willing to put in the thought for wondering why X is a thing with Belos, but it has to be in this way that flatters their blorbo that they demand.
And some of these people certainly seem chill at first, but again I think part of the reason for that is because, like a lot of stuff in regards to fandom racism and misogyny and the like, they don't really seem to register what they're doing as aggravating, so they aren't bothered by it. But even when they are being 'calm' and chill, the way they portray the show through their redemption AUs and whatnot just reveals how they think, because they might not be approaching from some place of intentional malice, but from a willful 'ignorance is bliss' perspective. They haven't been on the receiving end of these constant fandom issues and then wonder why people are getting so heated over something reflective of real-life biases, when fiction was supposed to be a reprieve from all that; So they just act like it’s fandom stans needing to go touch grass.
So these fans come across as soft and comfort-oriented, and then in the same breath express concern over what a terrible person Luz is or whatever without any awareness, because some people are just way too lax about their fandom bigotry. Sorry but if you actually cared about these characters and their themes, you would realize that Camila would rightfully have only murder in mind towards the man who physically and emotionally scarred her daughter, and Masha -whose sole justified takeaway from the Wittebane story was that Philip just fucking sucks- wouldn't tolerate Belos' crap.
And you know what also really fucking sucks? I actually really enjoy Belos as a character and narrative, always have and still do; So it's agonizing to see people get him so wrong, in addition to everything else. In theory, I don't mind the concept of liking Belos, and there are still some people I'm chill with over this! But holy hell I've seen so many Belos fans and Belos fans particularly post all sorts of madness, to the point where I've developed this Pavlovian association between Belos fandom and psychic damage.
If someone likes Wittebros it's pretty much all they post/reblog about. I instinctively brace myself every time I come across such a blog, and I often end up being proven right. It used to be a part of the fandom I could enjoy but now it just feels so hostile towards canon’s themes and celebration, and it’s aggravating when people try to portray the fandom’s callout of this behavior as ā€˜both sides’ being toxic when what we’re discussing is fandom racism and misogyny, as well as a general refusal to engage with themes that contributes in a negative feedback loop to poor reading comprehension.
I guess I'm so passionate because I've been holding onto these grievances for so long, keeping it bottled for the sake of keeping the peace, but now I'm just tired so why the hell not? It's all reflective of my issues with fandom in general so it's still relevant even if you don't care for TOH. Maybe I should devote my energy into something more useful, I dunno. But as I said, I guess this whole thing is just reflective of societal bigotry and biases, and the lack of reading comprehension as a whole. At least I got the chance to vent!

Summary:
In an alternate Earth where luminiferous aether theory proved true, humanity has created cloaking devices that work by sucking the aether out of the air. While originally created for war, one thing led to another and now the city of Erebus (formerly New York City) is cloaked in eternal night as a demonstration of technological advancement. Lucian is a prodigy at aether mechanics. Despite his interests and the cultural attitude towards Erebus, he’s never been fond of the project — a feeling which only strengthens after he’s sent to the city for a job. When he is introduced to Dielism, a growing artistic movement centred around imagery of the day and night cycle, he decides to help end the age of Erebus. Unfortunately, for some of its fans Dielism may be nothing more than a collection of pretty pictures.
Genre: Science fantasy, alternate history, dieselpunk / decopunk
Age group: Adult
POV / Narration: Singular, first-person past-tense
Themes: The aestheticification of political causes
Cast (major):
Lucian Prestwich: The protagonist. Used to keeping his feelings secret, until Walter and Gladys encourage him to start speaking up.
Edward Blinkhorn: The head of the Erebus Project. Prone to prattling on about things that don't matter.
Gladys Henwood: A major local organizer in the anti-Erebus Project movement (ie most of the city's people, really. She just helps spread the word about protests and other such events.) Barely hiding her eternal bitterness over herself and everyone else in Erebus being barred from living a normal life.
Walter Henwood: Gladys' brother. Takes life lightly, except when it comes to the matter of light itself.
Word count goal: 12K
Date started: January 2, 2025

I wouldn't call myself brave especially since I hide behind the anon but okay, if you say so :3
The one thing about the miss part in my exams is the fact that my devices would be taken away and I couldn't bear that since most of the like-minded people are in my phone :3
Hehe then I have to start practicing hard then :D You deserve nothing but the best!
I'll check them out when I have the time! Violent media do not deter me, in fact, they rouse my interest. I love watching violence and gorey movie and listening to those kinda songs :3
So real, I hate theory! I'm more of a practical and a hands on person :D
It does look good!! I wanted to do a straw page before but saw it and came out cause it looked intimidating :') I have a carrd so far but its outdated TvT
Also also, the journaling kit I talked about!! It came today :3 It is a purple themed one and I. Am. In. Love!!! I'm so excited to fill them out :D
-🪻
I do believe you are brave petal, some people don't send asks because they are scared that they'll say something wrong and piss the person off. From what I gathered from your asks I don't think you can do any wrong so don't worry about pissing me off or making me upset with your asks (˵ •̀ į“— - ˵ ) ✧ Having your devices taken away would be like a shot to heart if that was to happen, I would miss you alot. But Its best not to dote on the negative, lets stay positive! I know you did good, just on intuition alone. ą“¦ąµą“¦ą“æ Ė‰ĶˆĢ€ź’³Ė‰ĶˆĢ )✧ I'm also a fan of more violent media aswell, I've recently been watching the Alien Films after having watched Alien Romulus not that long ago. I guess they don't really fall under 'violent' but they are quite good, I'd recommend them and some of them are just iconic and classic parts of media. Strawpage can be a bit difficult at first, but It's more of a learn as you go process (which is with most things aswell), there are bunch of tutorials online that you can use for advice (I just kinda went in blind, but if you dont feel confident tutorials are your friend on the unknown). Its good that you enjoy your journaling kit! The more you like something, typically the more it would encourage you to do more of journaling, so that's brilliant! I deserve nothing but the best? What a bold statement flower, I can't wait to see what work you end up producing with your art then, especially if you're putting in more practice for me ā‚ŠĖšāŠ¹ā™”

I know in essence it isn't really different from the "Duck vs Decorated Shed" theory, but in my head I've been categorizing all games as art or products. I feel like part of why I've become so shmup pilled the past two-ish years is because shmups never got popular enough to become products
Fighting games are products now, shooters are products, most non-indie RPGs and action games are products. Its, again, not an original thought, but the model of games as a service has like irreparably damaged entire genres. But I feel like people treating video games like marvel movies socially commodifies things too. Every time I see a game that looks like art but says its about depression or grief I'm torn between believing the artists intentions, and wondering if they're viewing the concept of human emotion from outside it's enclosure. Everyones horny but nobodys fuckin. Everyone loves trauma as a fan fiction device but nobody presents themselves genuinely, so unintentionally the artists themselves or the fans who are advertising the art end up turning it into a product. It goes from a person's honest vision to a number on a store page that makes you go I'm not sure that person's experience is worth $4 on sale

Hey, sorry, weird question, but what happened with Reddit and Westworld? Did the creators of Westworld change something about the show's future storylines because a redditer guessed what was going to happen?
So Westworld had a gigantic audience of 12 million, and it's surprising because this was HBO's attempt for a new tentpole franchise when Game of Thrones was going downhill.
A subreddit spawned, I was in it as a viewer capacity and there was a lot of speculation. Star Ward level of speculation. Which is good , if your show is good, you want them engaged.
So a bunch of redditors had guessed ( Spoilers) that Ed Harris was playing the Current version of Man in Black, and Jimmy Simpson was the younger version of Man in Black , William. That they were the same character.
And that's because the first season was actually beautifully crafted. Including one scene where Younger William enters the park for the first time, and debated choosing a Black or White cowboy hat. This is a simple storytelling device, character is nice, naive, believes in the good in the world, circumstances makes him lose that humanity. Then it made sense for William to be MIB, wearing the black cowboy hat. But until you saw the entire series it could be brushed off. But once you saw it, it made so much sense.
This is during the height of GOT, Star Wars when speculation and the need for twists and turns were paramount. Felt like you needed to outsmart the viewers if you want to be a good showrunner.
During that time, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have an interview to an audience, which they said things in a joking manner. But in the age of digital social media, things go fast. Especially if it's only a text blurb and people didn't see the actual clip
Tumblr media
Turns out to be a tongue in cheek joke. But the damage was done and it spread everywhere.
They also decided to do a prank to reveal the all the spoilers of season 2, turns out they made a rickroll video to Redditors as a light-hearted joke.
With that said, season 2 started but there was a lot of thing that seemed off in the show, it started to get even more conveluted.
Multiple spanning timelines. The show also started to get more and more philosophical. Because the show is about Robots ( Hosts) , you never know if a character is a robot as well. So that could feel like a cheap gimmick.
Also it's not only focused on Westworld anymore, it spanned outside to the real world , making a show called Westworld...not Westworld ( even though the Old Westworld movie had multiple theme park sections as well)
I also worked in Marketing, I also want to take the hunch, that General Audience ( Not the hardcore Human Philosopher/ai/spirit/High Art viewer ) wanted to just watch Robots vs Humans and the drama surrounding that, not get too deep in the human subconscious.
But the showrunners made it felt they added twists and turns so much, maybe to outsmart said Redditors? ( As I said, joke or not right?) That the general audience started to be confused and lost interest
The show then went from season 1 with a staggering of 12 million viewers, to season 4 measly few million. And this is HBO rolling the red carpet for Nolan and Joy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel, if you're a showrunner, you need to be careful because anything you say will be dissected and spread like wildfire, and sometimes written articles don't convey tone, especially if it's a joke, that click bait newest and even well known journals can run with. This you can clearly see if you are part of the Marvel fandom.
All of this is sad because Westworld season 1 was so beautifully crafted and written. But because of all of this, as a viewer, you're left wondering if Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy were genuinely trying to craft a twist because the story needed it, or done it for the shock and confuse viewers even more.
Nerdwriter went more in details on it's fall.
This is why I am a bit worried about the TV Fallout Series because they are the executive producers and also Nolan directed some episodes.
This is also why there is so many similar vibes to Westworld, especially MIB to The Ghoul, Dolores Abernathy to Lucy Maclean and so on as I posted on my Tumblr
Both Fallout and Westworld had the gaming aspect where your character could choose to be good, mid , or evil. As Westworld, humans can go in to just explore an enchanting Western theme park, but some are deviants and they go there to unleash their deepest desires.
The only hope I have is that Fall Out is a franchise, they have rules and lore.
Then again Star Wars had rules and lore but they retconned and brought back dead characters just for reusing legacy characters to make more money...
So yeah just my two cents 🄓

Fanfiction and Assemblage
ā€œA commercially published novel is multiply produced—editors, agents, designers, marketers, literary sources, and market demands, all have their parts to play—but it comes to readers as a discrete book‐shaped entity with a single authored name. It isĀ Carry OnĀ by Rainbow Rowell. Its multiple influences are not readily apparentĀ on the face of it.Ā By contrast, all the popular understandings of fanfiction I’ve referred to here rely heavily on multiple relations—text to source, text to legal right, writer to writer, writer to community, fanfiction to other fanfiction—and fanfic texts themselves often announce these relationships on their front pages. This relationality—these multiple sources, influences, and participants—is something we immediately understand as intrinsic to fanfiction rather than something we might gradually become convinced of by delving into French theory or studying the publishing process. The ā€œweā€ of Western reading culture, however, do not primarily think of literature as an assemblage, and while we are likely well aware that books are things that must be assembled at some point and that websites must be coded for display on complex devices, this material assemblage is not what we have in mind when we think of ā€œliterary composition,ā€ whether digitally or codexically disseminated. For most readers and writers, the work of literary composition is the work of the author, and this way of thinking about authors and their works is conditioned by Enlightenment notions of individuality, genius, aesthetic value, and art. Fanfiction both challenges and owes its existence to these same notions.ā€

Here's my review of The Talos Principle 2. It's not a flattering one, but it felt like some things needed to be said.
Tumblr media
First of all, let’s get all of ad hominems out the way. This is not a review in bad faith, nor is in written out of malice. I’m not politically opposed to democracy, liberalism, individualism, humanism and women’s rights. I’m somewhat a nihilist, yeah, but a rather practical one. Meanings can be constructed for ease of living and efficiency and all that jazz. I’m also not a puzzle genre hater. I’ve 100%ed Portal 2, and the only reason I do not have 100% at TTP1 is because I could never bring myself to kill Milton off. Who I am though is a huge fan of the first game. This is clearly affecting my perception of this one, so this is relevant, I think.
I’m a huge fan of TTP1 and I hugely disliked TTP2. Is this game a sequel, does it continue the story? Yes. Is it a spiritual successor, does it continue the _narrative_? No, not at all. It feels different, hits different, and for me it wasn’t in a good kind of way.
First of all, TTP2 is overwhelmingly naĆÆve. I do see that this is a deliberate creative choice, but I strongly believe it does not fit the series. It was a bad idea to take a thought-provoking piece of art and continue it as a message rather than as a discussion. TTP1 had space within itself to engage with its ideas and to form individual conclusions. TTP2 clearly wants to tell you something specific, but to truly listen you need to suspend your disbelief a lot more than before. Where the first game would have tackled a question with some degree of nuance, this one tends to postulate an answer. Would like to explore space for some other reasons than our moral duty to light up the Universe with cognition and life? Do not believe in such things? Good luck. Do not think that beauty exists / is inherently good / matters? Good luck once again, now with a chance to disappoint your companions. The list goes on, and while I’m all for humanism, technocracy and progress, I still felt trapped in reasonings game offered me for it all.
There’s also a huge problem with the narrative as a whole – there is no whole. Plot seems strangely fragmented, with Somnodrome arc being a bitter mix of an afterthought and a cut plotline. What was it for? Same goes for the secret society plot. And the main story, including Miranda, is just flat. Writers want us to care for their characters, but with characters being mouthpieces for ideas this is rather hard.
Also, there’s a Theory of Everything is this game. It just is. With it, the Universe is _postulated_ as being fundamentally knowable and understandable, which is unsettling for such a huge philosophical debate. (Put your ad hominem down, I do believe that the world is cognizable, I just don’t think making this a knowable fact is a good choice for this particular game). Moreover, with the Theory of Everything the science is solved. By one person, who consciously excluded their peers out of scientific progress. One person solved science and nowhere in the game is anyone upset about it. Why? Because writers needed a magical solve-all-problems device, and without it nothing would work plot wise. But with it the plot just seems plastic and cheap.
This story has no room for me to challenge it from the inside, it forces me to go and start a one-sided conversation with its authors, which I do not like. In short, it feels rushed, naĆÆve and incomplete. But this is a puzzle game, not a text adventure. So, are the puzzles any good?
Well, I did not like them. I’m not sure if it means that they are bad, but in my opinion, they are somewhat boring. Most of the time solving them feels mechanical, not that much of ah-a! moments for me. More of the ā€œfinally, get this, stupid new puzzle elementā€ and ā€œafter 500 hours in portal my brain solves this without thinkingā€. The other category is ā€œto convoluted to be interestingā€. But there’s non zero chance this is me and not the game.
Really bad stuff happens between the puzzles, in those huge open spaces. They get old very fast, and fast travel option isn’t helping much. Some regions are almost impossible to navigate even with the compass, and solving for stars just becomes a chore.
Well, most of the game felt like a chore to me. There are other things I’m upset about, like making Athena, seemingly our main character from TTP1, a chosen-one with a God complex (she IS that even without the myth around her) or not including Milton, but otherwise good plot could have made it work. This one did not. It disregards a very personal thing for a fan of the first game – their unique experience. Maybe the new audience will find this alluring. I certainly did not.

Note
here i made it an ask:
Tumblr media
HECK YES, ok, I'll do all the questions that Kogi didn't ask me.
What was the first Dragon Age game you played?
I started at the beginning because I think Kogi and Feather would have manifested in showers of sparkles to berate me into oblivion if I hadn't, so DAO.
2. Which Dragon Age game is your favorite so far?
DA2. Listen, I love all of those bisexual disasters (except Fenris) so damn much, and while the whole thing is a little repetitive, I always find it to be more comfortable than annoying. I'm a sucker for a good framing device with an unreliable narrator. And while I love the Warden and the Inquisitor because they are blank slates that I can create anyone off of, it's nice that Hawke has a solid, actual character for me to love.
3. Do you usually play as a warrior, mage, or rogue? Which class are you planning to try first this time around? Which subclass?
I've got one of each in my canon worldstate, but Rogue is historically my favorite, even though I find mage easiest to play. I will almost certainly make a shitty little double-daggers rogue as my first Rook because all we know of Rook so far leads me to believe that she'd be besties with my Hawke, which means Rogue Supremacy.
5. Do you typically use a preset character and name or spend hours in the character creator coming up with a custom one?
Bahahaha, I think the first time I played DAI, I was in the CC for a solid two point five hours. I will be dicking around for nine years with hair color alone.
6. Do you have your Rook(s) planned out to any degree? If so, would you share some details or ideas you have?
I will need to know the canon surnames for all the races before I can really dive into planning a Rook. I can't do anything without a name, and my name has got to jive with the surname, so that's what I'll need to start with. I can say that she will almost certainly have red hair, since all of my previous First Characters have been redheads. Gotta stick with tradition.
9. Which romance, if any, do you plan to pursue first?
I have been trying to KISS Scout LACE HARDING for TEN YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (But Davrin is making a strong case for himself by simply existing. He'll probably be second.)
10. Which location are you most excited/hoping to explore in-game?
Weisshaupt. I want to know everything about how the official organization of the Wardens works, so I know how shitty the little Fereldan outpost has been all these years.
13. What’s one thing you’ve seen confirmed so far that you’re a fan of?
Mmmm everything about the character creator--the pronouns and body shapes and lighting and just... everything about it.
14. What’s one thing you’ve seen confirmed so far that you’re NOT a fan of?
mmmmmmrrrrrggggggg Ghilan'nain.
15. Do you have any unpopular opinions about DAV so far?
The character trailer was a blast and made me infinitely more excited for the game than anything else we've seen, I didn't think it was ""too MCU"" or ""quippy"" or whatever, I thought it was perfect Varric content and I loved it.
16. What’s one crack theory you subscribe to (yours or someone else’s)?
Sandal will show up at some point, possibly in the Black City, because he's actually massively important and possibly the Maker in disguise.
17. Are you interested in all the lore and speculation or do you focus more on the games and stories themselves?
Yes? To me, a lot of the lore is in the stories and the stories are about the lore, so they go together. I'm not the most speculative--I just want to know, I don't want to guess!--so I'm bouncing off the walls waiting for the actual game to drop so I can just go nuts. And I'm always really here for the characters, so that's what I'm most interested in.
18. Which aspect of fandom are you most looking forward to? (e.g. reading/writing fic, the bounty of gorgeous art, getting to know new people, etc.)
NEW ART SO MUCH NEW ART god bless every fanartist in this fandom, I cannoooottt waaaaiiiittt!! There is already so much amazing stuff in the tags, I can't wait until there's even more!!! I want to see everyone's Rooks, all of them, I cannot wait. Also I have not written fanfic in years, but if anything is going to get me to write some, it will be Dragon Age, so it will be great to get back into that, hopefully.
19. Are you planning to replay any of the previous games, watch Dragon Age: Absolution, or read any of the books/comics/short stories, or are there other games you want to play in the meantime?
Uh, Kogi and I watched the gameplay trailer and about ten minutes after we finished, I'd plugged DAI into the PS4 and booted everything up. So. Yes. I'm also finally reading Tevinter Nights after sitting on it for two years. AND I'm making my best friend play all three games from the beginning so she can join us in DA hell, we are deeply enjoying Origins rn. It's great. I am fully in the soup and there I shall remain until DAV appears.

Comparing the JJK fan's current experience with my experience with Jojolion
Tumblr media
From 2020 - 2021, the Jojolion fandom was a pressure cooker: fan theories and coping and criticisms were everywhere. Some were determined to keep the faith, some were proclaiming the story ruined, but we all were held hostage by our need to know how it ended, how everything payed off. Reading JJK weekly now, I feel like we are going through something similar. Spoiler-heavy observations and parallels below the cut.
TL;DR - watching, chapter-by-chapter, as a story you care about makes mistakes (whether perceived or not) near its end is maddening. Read Jojolion.
Disclaimers:
1) I very much love both series, warts and all. 2) Even while reading weekly/monthly, both series have great moments and art. It's never all doom and gloom. 3) These are feelings that are massively exacerbated by watching a story you're very invested in finish in slow motion. Jojolion's last arc works better in hindsight (warts and all), and I'm sure this arc will work much better when it's done -- think about how much hate the Culling Games got while that arc was coming out.
Heavy, HEAVY Jujutsu Kaisen and Jojolion manga Spoilers below:
Reasons fans began to dread the end of both JJK/JJL:
Major character that has been very plot-relevant getting an unsatisfying, abrupt death. You never truly shake the feeling it was intended to be a fake-out death
Tumblr media
(Literally no one believed Jobin was dead for years) (Gojo can apply here too)
Hyped-up, fan-favorite side characters end up feeling underexplored, getting extremely quick and underwhelming deaths
Tumblr media
Too much of the finite remaining page time and plot relevance is being given to characters with no real apparent arc or fewer interesting character dynamics
Tumblr media
(Love both characters but its true)
Resisting the encroaching fear that long-awaited moments will never come until the story ends abruptly (JJK will most likely end abruptly). "This can't be the last arc, I've been obsessing over this unaddressed plot thread for months!"
Tumblr media
Phases of the battle/arc feel extra long due to wait between chapters, protagonists can feel stuck in one place for months
Tumblr media
Fan-favorite character dynamics being absent for long stretches of time (YasuGap, Most of JJK's cast lowkey)
The story frequently references its framing device, keeping the faith alive that everything has been meticulously planned
Tumblr media
(Don't get me started on the flashforward)
All this, slowly stewing in the fanbase over months, can make fans feel trapped between faith, dread, and pessimism as the story moves at a seemingly glacial pace towards its ending.
I feel like by the time Jojolion was finally ending, everyone's nerves were so fried that we barely even wanted to discuss the ending at all. I hope we can avoid a similar collapse, but we'll see how Gege chooses to end his story. As someone deeply invested JJK's ending, I think it's been important for me to separate from the story for a bit when needed.
Again, keep in mind that I've learned to appreciate Wonder Of U, and I am still enjoying JJK quite a lot. Both series, while very different, never fail to make interesting choices in how they interact with battle manga tropes and structure. They can just be perplexing and frustrating at times, especially so close to the end.
I'm sure this is not a unique phenomena. It's basically what sports fans go through, in a way. These are just two recent examples that really stick out in my personal experience.
