The amount of unpaid labor necessary to make a game or get your foot in the door anywhere is so prohibitively high that "indie" games space is forever doomed to be dominated by a very narrow net of voices that either get extremely lucky or have some amount of generational wealth to fall back on.

Part of the reason I'm personally so pro-modding in games is that I think it's one of the few ways people can experiment/learn gamedev without dropping everything in their life and learning four parallel crafts at once.

As a bonus hot take I'm also really sour on most "game-making games" (like Roblox, Mario Maker or Dreams) for the way they sandbox new developers into spaces they can't easily grow out of or monetize.

Phobia Controls

While showering, when I have all my best ideas, I was thinking.  My roommate is looking forward to playing my game, as it’s getting closer to a point that is roughly able to be described as “playable.”  She’s *severely* arachnophobic, and of course being a fantasy roguelike/lite, I have a desire to put monstrous spiders into my game.  I have quite a few plans for them in fact.  While this is not a problem particularly right now, as I have no creature graphics or animations, I do eventually want full animations within my game.

So, I have come up with some parameters for level generation, I’ll have a list of phobias that might come up, like arachnophobia and then you have two options beyond ignoring those controls.

“I’m afraid of spiders, please DON’T show me them” which will remove spider-based content.

and

“I’m afraid of spiders, PLEASE show me them” which will give the game a bit more of a bias towards throwing spiders in your wake.

I feel like this will both help my roommate, and also people who just want to stomp spiders.

Milestone!

I have now had my first four randomly-generated weapons in my game.  I enjoy the apparent story it has accidentally created.

The debug map presently generates a featureless room (beyond some random tile variation), a dwarf (the player), a human, and a rat.  In this room, there are two short swords (one on the human, and one on the floor next to the dwarf), a short bow (in the dwarf’s possession), and a stack of 20 arrows (also held by the dwarf).

On the human, which wants to kill the dwarf, a sword with a dwarf-bone blade, marble crossguard, hilt made of the bone of the most common livestock of the Dwarves (Gèza), and a feldspar pommel.

The dwarf however got a bow of ashwood, bearing a cotton bowstring, and 20 arrows with a basalt head, electrum shaft, and cotton fletching.  Clearly the most effective of weaponry.

The dwarf’s sword on the floor similarly had a human-bone blade, brass crossguard, sylvite hilt and a quartz pommel.

Whatever is going on here, this is personal.
