I really want to show a friend episodes of detective Conan where he doesnā€™t mention that heā€™s not a grade schooler and then randomly throw in one where heā€™s like ā€œnah Iā€™m an adult frā€ and watch them freak out.
if only I had friends.

My favourite post-Conan KaiShin flavor to explore is the one where, although Shinichi has his body back, he keeps up with KID heists for the brainteaser excitement of it rather than an actual desire to catch KID.
Over time, the thief and his heists become the only constant in a world he doesn't recognise anymore (the journey changed him and any attempt to force his life back to what it was before Conan, eventually fails him).
And when KID stops appearing for one reason or another, Shinichi realizes just how much he was depending on the thief and springs into action to find him.

Detective Conan AU where as kids, Shinichi--being the little detective geek he is--makes a series of code words and phrases, and makes Ran (and only Ran, because this is for him to talk to her, not everyone else) memorize them so that if he ever needs to tell her stuff without anyone knowing, he can say those to her and she'll know.
This includes "I'm in danger", "we can't go to the police", "I'm sorry", and "please play along".
Later, when he and Ran are alone and inside, away from any potential passers by, Conan quietly tells her their codes.
(Ran isn't the best actor, but for her best friend she'll get better. She has to. She reads books and watches tutorials, practices with Conan when she's alone, and the more they work on it together, the better they get.)
(Conan isn't good either, but he's loved Ran since the first time she smiled at him, so he'll do anything for her - including getting better at acting and lying. The less cracks in the mask, the safer everyone is.)
(They rarely, if ever, speak of anything aloud. Only in the privacy of her room with music in the background, or a white noise generator that she bought with the excuse of trying to see if it helps her study.)
(Instead of the Sleeping Kogoro, we have Ran, who has - or had, depending on the company - been learning how to deduce from Shinichi, and has a knack for it after years of hanging around him, as well as constant texting conversations with him. Combined with Conan, they are a formidable team.)
(They never tell anyone she knows. Not until everything is over. Keeping the veneer of innocence has kept her safe, yet also in a perfect place to observe people who don't expect her to.)
(This is not to say some don't suspect, especially those who personally knew her beforehand such as Agasa and Yusaku, but it is never confirmed, and even under direct questioning, they both maintain their stance of innocence.)
(In other words- in a world where two friends shared a childish whim, some things change and others not at all.)

I think it would be funny if, post APTX 4869 cure, Shinichi kept using the wristwatch tranquilizer. There's nothing kickable around, so he takes down a criminal like a wrangler to a feral bull

Think about characters that the show tends to portray as innocent and chill but still 100% know Conan is Not who he pretends to be. Jodie should by now at least strongly suspect Conan is Shinichi. We have seen she's not a bad detective (in figuring out Akai faked his death), she knows Vermouth has stayed young for 20+ years and she heard her talking to Haibara at the docks, so she could probably do some research and put two and two together. Like by now she should know. Maybe she's just not addressing it to protect him?
And then there's Takagi. He doesn't have half the information Jodie does, but come on. After the "who are you" scene in the elevator???? Being answered he'll tell him in the afterlife and ending up not getting a reply???? And then moving on like nothing happened???? Like you gotta admit. Something weird must've happened inside his brain. How do you even justify that. "Maybe he's the spirit protector of cops incarnate I'd better do as he says and act natural lest he casts a Curse upon me" or some shit similar. Surely not Shinichi Kudo shrunk by a criminal organisation that would be too weird.

Edogawa Conan: *is a little devil bastard demon spawn; might be sadistic, actually*
Edogawa Conan: *sassing people 7 ways to Sunday and calling them stupidly incompetent in a way they think was a compliment*
Also Edogawa Conan: *acting innocent and cute* ā€œAh-le-le~ what is this?ā€ *proceeds to be the smuggest little shit ever seen*
The Shounen Tantei-dan, Hattori Heiji, Sera Masumi, Kaitou KID, Haibara Ai: *stares at the camera with a deep sigh of exasperation*
Akai: *watches on in faint amusement*
Meanwhile, Amuro/ Furuya hiding his grin: ā€œWhy does this kid remind me of myself?ā€
Yeah, I wonder why /s

one thing among many that bugs me about detective conan is that the author took the shortcut for the characters as kids (in flashbacks) and just made their personalities the same as when they're teens/adults. which, i get it, writing realistic personality shifts that happen over years of maturing isn't easy, and it's not uncommon for writers to either just keep the personalities the same in flashbacks many years prior, or have a dramatic shift either for comic effect or to show off how one single tragic event changed the character forever.
anyway what i'm getting at is that shinichi's always acted the way he has. and when he's playing the role of conan, people are like "you're no ordinary kid... who are you really...??" except he acted exactly the same when he actually was six/seven years old. he's always been smarter than his peers in terms of detective work and having a photographic memory (which is apparently required for all the teen prodigy detectives). i don't know why this bugs me so much. maybe bc he really has no reason to act all "teehee i'm just a kid" when people comment on his weird knowledge? or bc somehow now that he actually is older than he looks that changes things even though he's literally always been this way? man.

The insanity that is the Kudou Yuusaku's Detective Show case šŸ˜†
Like I'm not sure how to process that Vermouth managed to capture KID's mannerisms towards Conan almost perfectly (the fact the line "tsundere brat" came from Vermouth, while it was so on point for KID, is kinda hilarious) or Conan letting his guard down because he thought she was KID, therefore harmless to let her in the Kudou manor, when idk Haibara is staying next door.
Shinichi, I know you trust KID with a lot of things, but seriously... He isn't the only master in disguise you are acquainted with, please?! (the fact Vermouth learned these techniques from the first Kaitou KID a.k.a current KID's dad, and no one is any wiser about this is killing me) šŸ˜©
Honestly, when and where did Vermouth acquire the knowledge of how KID and Shinichi act with each other outside of the public eye in the first place? Was this the case of playing it by ear from how Shinichi acts in general when he isn't pretending to be a child? Did Vermouth figure out it was KID who appeared as Sherry to save Haibara back during the Mystery Train arc? I have so many questions šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«
(If KID wasn't a criminal in the eyes of the law though, he could start suing for libel with so many impostors of him appearing all the time LMAO šŸ¤£)

I think itā€™d be funny if, instead of post-antidote Shinichi and Ran having trouble and trust issues with secrets and angst and all that, with him not wanting to tell her about Conan or having issues after that, itā€™s just. Well.
He physically cannot keep a secret from her anymore. It just. Blurts out. Because he has spent over a year of his life keeping secrets and lying, two of the things he detests doing the most - especially to Ran - it is such a relief when he finally doesnā€™t need to keep such a huge secret anymore that he just spills and. Doesnā€™t stop. Itā€™s such a burden lifted off of him and the thought of keeping secrets from her again just makes his skin crawl.
The first thing he does as soon as heā€™s completely cured and the BO is taken down is go over and confess everything, every heart wrenching moment of anxiety and paranoia, every thought process, every moment he almost spilled the beans, the moment he went from barely being held back from telling her to actively hiding, everything. And in the process everything else he couldnā€™t tell her but was holding onto for various people (now that there are no longer any covers that can be blown, well. No reason to keep them from her.)
He can keep it until the relative safety of his (her, their, whatever) house, and then it just. Pours out like a waterfall. Ran very quickly realizes she doesnā€™t have to worry about Shinichi keeping secrets from her anymore because if he so much as has to keep a spur-of-the-moment gift store keychain from her, he gets these puppy eyes and she can see him struggling to not just. Blab right then and there. He starts fighting, she can see him visibly catch himself as he looks like heā€™s about to cry. If someone asks him to keep something from her he might actually cry.
He canā€™t do it yā€™all. He just canā€™t.
In the middle of a case? Sure. Heā€™ll keep things from the culprits. But soon as heā€™s done the police donā€™t have to worry about him writing a report, because they just need to have someone nearby with a tape recorder because heā€™s giving they play-by-play of every minute detail to Ran because she may not have realized what he was thinking at exactly minute 34.25 of the case. It gets to the point where Ran has a tape recorder at home and she has a designated three hours she calls ā€œspill timeā€ where Shinichi tells her every case detail and vague secret heā€™s kept (or thinks heā€™s kept from her) that day.
Shinichi getting ready to propose? Literally takes everyone involved and their mothers to get him to not just straight up text and ask her the second he makes up his mind to ask (luckily not when heā€™s in front of Ran), everyone is running a truly unbelievable amount of interference, and honestly, Ran figured it out half an hour in but heā€™s trying so hard to make it special, sheā€™ll let him have it.
Everyone becomes resigned to the fact that if you tell Shinichi something, Ran will guaranteed know by the end of the night.
(Agasa ends up making them ultra durable and ultra encrypted phones and tiny, portable white noise generators because Shinichi was about to have a meltdown one time when Ran was out of down and he couldnā€™t blab to her, and that other time they were both out of town but could only find a shady hotel to crash in)
(Yeah, thereā€™s still issues on both sides, such as Shinichiā€™s lingering PTSD and paranoia and her own coming to terms with the Conan situation, but Ran thinks heā€™s kinda cute like this and despite everything, itā€™s nice to know that he genuinely hated keeping all that from her, even if it hurt her.)
