Obsessed with this YuGiOh AU I thought up.
Since we don't know a lot about the Kaiba brother's past, especially before their orphanage days, I began to think of what kind of lives they must've had before everything changed. And an idea came to me.
What if Seto and Mokuba had been raised on a farm? Learning the meaning of hard work and dedication at an early age, being proud but honest kids. The thought of them growing up surrounded by farm animals was oddly adorable so I decided to go with it.
When their parents died, the farm was sold and Seto and Mokuba were sent to an orphanage. When adopted by Gozaburo, they were forced to forget all about that happy farm life. But part of Seto could never really forget those days where he had been truly happy. And of course he can never let anyone know who he used to be. Gozaburo drilled it into his head that being a "dirty farmer boy" was something low and to be ashamed of.
However, by chance, while still in school and on a field trip he's forced to go on (Mokuba made him because Mokuba wanted pictures and Kaiba just can't say no to his brother) to a farm, Yugi(along with Atem because if it's gonna be an AU, Atem has to stay) and the others happen to notice how at peace Kaiba seems to be out here. It's strange to them; a jerk CEO tech titan like Kaiba, content on a farm?
Then a herd of chickens, Kaiba's favorite, breaks loose from the farmhands, and without a second thought, mind immediately going back to his happier childhood, Kaiba strides forwards and starts calling the chickens the way his parents taught him, herding them into a group, giving neck scratches and headpats to the chickens while everyone just stares in silent shock, until Atem breaks the silence by saying that was incredible, asking Kaiba how he did that.
Kaiba, in a corner now, admits that when he was born on a farm. Joey snickers at the thought of Kaiba being a farm boy, however Atem says that's amazing. Kaiba had once been a farmer; people responsible for growing and raising food for others, the backbone of society. It was something he should feel proud of. And it's the first time someone's ever said that to Kaiba, and it really makes him reflect throughout the rest of the day.
So, Kaiba decides maybe embracing some of his past isn't so bad after all. He buys back his parents' farm and moves back into it, turning the Kaiba Mansion into a community center for Domino City. Kaiba fills his farm with chickens and goats just like it used to be, growing berries for jams and baked goods. For once in his life, Kaiba feels like he's home.
Running the farm also gives Kaiba some new ideas for KaibaCorp products, designed to help farmers; collars for livestock to track their health and detect disease early to minimize herd infection, smart spinklers that monitor weather patterns and soil moisture to ensure crops are watered the right amount between rainfall, and making more efficient harvester attachments for tractors. By combining both his past with his present, Kaiba feels a sense of contentment he hasn't in a long time.

tw: murder, death
Casteshipping au where they're both serial killers. Bakura does it for the lols but is very particular about his victims and daytime detective Atem kills off suspects that he knows would not be sentenced. Bakura finds out about Atem's secret identity and is just utterly extatic that he finally met someone like him, but Atem adamantly denies that they're anything alike and is initially disgusted by Bakura. But Bakura keeps showing up and pressing his buttons, and Atem eventually snaps. They do a weirdly romantic killing of a generally shitty guy, and Atem gradually gets dragged down to Bakura’s level. Ryou's probably like a hit man, and Kaiba is Atem's rival detective who secretly wants to partner up with him for cases. Not really sure where else to take this lol

Detective Atem Au
-slides this over to @iratheforeteller, @dog-fish, & @ygofanfiction‘s mod morrow- Here’s the detective Atem au I mentioned last night in the cowrite party! After I got booted of the net, I worked on cleaning up the first scene. I hope you guys like this! Please enjoy!
Pale grey eyes looked up at him, waiting for a mercy that never came. They were lifeless, frozen in time. Blueish grey hair was fanned under her, framing her head in a halo. The pale skin was the ashen white of death. Beside her, Detective Atem ‘Pharaoh’ Pharos gazed emotionlessly down at his newest case. His hand was clasped around the Wadjet eye he wore. His lips moved slowly as he murmured the prayer his mother had taught him.
“Damn waste.” He said. He ran a hand through his unruly mahogany red hair. He knelt down to look closer at the angry red mark on her neck. Lanyard, probably. He thought as he glanced at the broken woven length. Her hand was curled tightly around something. Rigor would make it hard to get the object out. Malik can deal with it. I have a hunch it might be something missing from the lanyard.
His crimson eyes flicked to the crowd starting to form. His mind scanned them, looking for any possible leads or suspects. Atem’s partner in crime fighting, Akefia ‘Creeper’ Cryptos walked over from where he had been talking with a few uniforms. His silver hair was pulled back into a ponytail. His dark eyes were also taking in the crowd.
“Got a possible id on our Jane Doe. It’s pending any of Malik’s tests and a positive from any family, but I think it’s right.” He murmured loud enough for him to hear. Atem stood, knowing his partner didn’t do quiet. Akefia motioned to a group of five off to the side of the crowd. “Those are her friends. The shrimp’s her best friend, and he’s clammed up. Our uniforms can’t get anything out of him. Think you can work your magic on him?”
“I can try.” He said as he stood. He walked over to the group. There four people standing around a smaller person. They were protective of that figure. He would have to be careful with that one. Might have to take him to Mai’s for some of her apple pie a la mode.
The tallest person in the group was a golden blond male. Amber colored eyes watched the crowd, constantly moving from person to person. He was probably in his mid or early 20’s. By the haunted look in his eyes, he had seen far too much for his age. While he had a lean build, his body was coiled and ready to strike. The watchdog. Extremely loyal and protective. Definitely not our perp.
Beside the blond was the chief’s son. Atem would know that brunette hair anywhere. His brown eyes were rimmed in red. His Jane’s death had hit the kid hard. He must have had a romantic interest in her or was her boyfriend. Kid was a little more built than his friend, but he didn’t seem as ready to lash out. Hate that the kid’s gotta go through this.
The only other brunette was also the only female in the group. She was athletic, with a slender build. Dancer? It would fit with her short bob cut. Her arms were wrapped around the one in the middle. Her blue eyes looked around nervously. She didn’t seem as guarded as her two friends. His gaze moved on when she noticed him studying her.
He had to do a double take. The third male looked so similar to his partner from what he could make out. It was uncanny at first, but then he picked out the differences. He was far paler and not as bulky. His hair was pure white instead of silver. His eyes seemed like they were a lighter brown. The way he carried himself was different. He was far calmer, sage like, but still had a bit of that creepy vibe. I’d get more work done with him as my partner.
The group parted a bit as he stopped before them. The final person was revealed. He was about Atem’s height, and Atem stood a proud 5 foot 4. There was maybe an inch of difference at the most. His black hair was dyed red-violet at the tips and styled in pleasing spikes. He was lithe like his taller friends, but slender in a way they weren’t. His eyes were honest to god violet. He was as tan as Florida beach sand. Atem whimpered internally. The man was his dream lover looks wise on a platter.
“This is Detective Pharos, Detective Cryptos’ partner. If anybody can get Yugi to talk, it’s him.” Tristan said. He held his hand out to Atem. He took it. Firm, but not too hard, unlike his old man. He’s a good kid.
“I’ll get that bastard, I promise. I need to know everything. Please call me Atem. My car is just over there. My partner’s is beside it. Please place your two most quiet in my car and the noisiest in his. There’s a dinner about a block away, and I don’t want you walking there. We can talk there. The owner knows us very well.” The group walked over to where he had motioned.
“We’re taking them to Mai’s?”
“Yup. We’ve done all we can here, anyway. We’ll have to wait for Malik’s report after the autopsy. I want to know more about our Doe’s life. Who knows better than the friends?”
“Yeah, and it doesn’t hurt when there’s eye candy.”
“Please, remember we’re on the clock. It’s adult time, Akefia.”
“As long as you do the same.”

You Have Me Under Your Spell
AU
Synopsis: Detectives Atem and Mana are after a serial killer in Domino City.
Part | One
“I’m going to kill Kaiba.” Atem cursed under his breath as he tightened his hold on the steering wheel.
A giggle escaped from the blonde hair woman, who stood under a light post, as a group of men tried to take her with them.
Atem growled under his breath, his red eyes glowing with rage. Everything inside of him wanted to go over there and beat the cr-p out of those men. How dare they assume Mana was someone who would sleep for money!
The men received a sultry smile from Mana before she leaned in and whispered something to their ears. Atem couldn’t help but sigh in relief as the men quickly walked back inside their black SUV.
Inside their undercover car, Atem growled again. He couldn't believe that this was happening in the first place. He had never imagined Kaiba assigning him a partner for this case. Especially someone who he had feelings for.
“Are you f-cking serious Kaiba?” he demanded.
The CEO could only glare at his best agent.
“I assume a female partner would be great for this mission as you wouldn’t look good disguised as Dark Magician Girl, no?”
“Cut the bullsh-t. Out of every agent you could’ve chosen, why her? How am I supposed to just stand there as I’m being forced to see Mana dressed up like a duel card character for a nightclub and flaunt to any piece of scum that sees her?”
“That’s your problem, deal with it or I’ll assign someone else the mission with her.”
Atem grimaced watching men try leering Mana into sleeping with them. It made his sick to his stomach when some men took it as far to master bate in front of her. These pathetic pieces of garbage deserved nothing but to go to the Shadow Realm.
How could they see Mana as just a source of physical pleasure that they could take and toss?
She was so much more than that. She was fierce, kind, loyal, humble, funny, and utterly breathtaking.
Instead of standing outside a nightclub in the worst part of Domino, parading herself in order to help Kaiba and him with this murder case, she should be enjoying her night doing as she pleased.
Not coming in to work on her day off.
Atem cursed at Kaiba again, the steering wheel cracking under the intense pressure being placed upon them.
What was he doing?
What was he actually f-cking doing?
He should’ve told her a long time ago about his feelings.
Not push her further away from him.
“We leave in ten minutes. Do not waste my time.” he spoke, refusing to meet her eyes.
She scoffed.
“If we’re going to work together tonight please refrain from talking to me in your ignorant way.” she replied coldly as she gathered Dark Magician Girl’s costume and walked towards the ladies’ room.
She paused halfway and turned around. “Some of us, unlike others, do have a life outside work.”
Atem raised an eyebrow at her.
“I could’ve just ignored Kaiba’s call and carried on with my date tonight. You should thank me for coming to your rescue instead of acting like a d-ck.”
Mana pretended to powder herself as she spoke to him through her small commlink earring, “Are you ready to apologize?" she asked coldly.
“Stop fooling around with those men. Be alert for our killer.” Atem answered back sharply.
Mana growled angrily as she continued to doll herself up.
“Assh-le.” she cursed at him.
"And take off some of that make up. You're wearing too much of it."
"Excuse me? Are you saying you don't like the way I look?"
Atem groaned. If only she knew how he felt and thought of her.
"I did not say that." Atem managed to say.
"I’m flattered by such high praise," she tersely murmured but Atem saw the flittering hurt that passed over her face.
As much as his heart yearned to tell her how he was madly deeply in love with her, he knew it was far too dangerous to be close to him.
As the best and top detective of the incorporation, his life was constantly in danger.
He wouldn’t forgive himself if something were to happen to her.
She didn’t deserve him. She deserved so much more.
He could never be happy. He didn’t deserve it.
After another hour of sitting in the car Atem sighed.
Refusing to see her stand more time under that lamp post he decided to call it a night.
"We haven't captured our killer," she pointed out with outright exasperation with him. "Kaiba won’t be too happy."
"I don’t care. Let’s go," he shot back, both of them angry with the other but neither willing to back down.
“Now Mana!”
“No!”
It wasn’t a big surprise they were both mad at one another. They had a pretty nasty fight during the ride here. He tried to convince her to go home and that he would be better alone. She had even threatened to go out there alone without him.
"I’m done with your sh-t," Mana angrily hissed, cutting the commlink off.
If only he had the courage to tell her.
"You don't have to sit out here with me if you'll get bored. I can manage." Mana softly whispered as they pulled up near the nightclub.
"No" he replied through clenched teeth. "I'm not leaving you out here all alone."
"I can take care of myself," she shot back.
“I know you can but we’re in this case together!”
At that moment, a dark Rolls Royce pulled up in front of Mana, causing Atem to break from his thoughts.
Bingo.
Mana smirked as she made sure to show off her long legs and rake her fingers through her long blond hair, shaking the strands out as she tilted her head back. Using this as her chance to turn on her commlink.
The car’s back window rolled down. She leaned over to talk to the man, her lilting laughter filling Atem's ear.
Shattering his heart.

Right I promise no more posts after this one. Just thought I’d share a few doodles from work over the last couple of days:
Tumblr media
I tried sketching out the Fakemon Lilapse from Pokemon Vega - check out its Wiki page here which I have recently updated with templates and more info!
Tumblr media
Atem: Do I look like a killer to you?
Kaiba: ... yes. You kill my patience.
And a quick story under the tag!
“I can see it,” Yami began, eyes staring into space and hands in front of him. “Our victim - by day a business woman, ordinary, mild-mannered. But at night -” A sudden twirl and he wore a mask of seriousness (Along with his hand covering the top half of his face and fingers parted so he could see through). “- the deadly Cyber Blader.”
Joey and Tristan looked at each other, seemingly interested. Kaiba, however, rolled his eyes.
“She stalks her prey, using her cards,” Yami continued, miming the actions as he did. “Her opponents that night - two. Her ability allows her to double her power. Paired with a Black Pendant, she’s unstoppable. But then -”
“Den what?” asked Joey, eager to know.
“A trap is played!” exclaimed Yami. “Kunai with Chain! She is bound and swiftly finished off by her assailants. Boom.”
“So who were her ‘assailants’?” asked Kaiba mockingly, arms folded. “If you’re so strategic.”
“Don’t know, haven’t gotten that far yet,” admitted Yami quickly.

I'M HERE FOR THE RAMBLE. PLEASE, CONTINUE.
You sure you wanna open this can???? Okay you asked for it!!
Since you didn't mention a specific WIP I'll just take the invitation to ramble about my latest micro obsession XD
So for once I'm not writing a reader insert *add dramatic gasp here*! It's a puzzleshipping Noir-themed AU with an extra helping of masked vigilante romance.
Yugi is a private detective who gets hired to find a missing girl, who got wrapped up with some goons employed by the infamous gangster, Gozaburo Kaiba. During said investigation he comes face to face with The Shadow, a mysterious vigilante who, for about year, has been saving citizens in alleyways and rounding up Kaiba's thugs. Yugi manages to convince the mercurial vigilante to team up with him and bring Gozaburo Kaiba to justice.
A big lure I have in writing (and I hope, people reading) this fic is the ~dangerously seductive~ vibe that's surrounding the romance. Yugi has no idea who this masked man is but when he talks in that sinfully deep voice, pulls Yugi into strong arms and out of danger, and insists that he's too dangerous to get close to, Yugi can't help but be drawn in.
There's also a mystical vibe, as there's a reason they call him The Shadow. He looks and moves like living smoke, with red eyes that are almost demon-like (and scare mafia goons out of their wits). He's definitely a man, though, and Yugi knows it the first time The Shadow saves him and he feels the firm chest of a man, not a monster.
It'll take a while for Yugi to know more about the hero, but Yugi has his own reasons for bringing Gozaburo down...even if working with the mysteriously hot shadow man is a bonus.
All, or at least almost all the story will be from Yugi's POV, there may be a chapter or two from Atem's perspective once more is revealed about his character but I haven't decided on that yet, we'll see where the story goes.
There's a whole host of characters that'll make appearances, Mai, Anzu, and Duke being the firsts. I want to have Jonouchi, Ryou, and Honda make cameos too, but not exactly sure when or how yet. Then, Miho, Mokuba, and Seto will too, just in later chapters.
Any way, I've barely started on this yet, but I'm already really loving the way it's turning out, I've never written a story with a Noir-vibe and I'm excited about the experience! I'm hoping I'll stick to this idea long enough to have some chapters out soon but...we'll see? You guys know how I am *nervous laugh* I'm sure I have lots of other tidbits and points I could ramble about but I'll stop for now lol
Thank you for letting me ramble you lovely person!

Another Yakuza AU:
The Kaibas are one of the most powerful crime families in their prefecture. (For peak yakuza and also aesthetic, this is set in the 1960s.) Gozaburo has been raising his adopted son Seto to be his heir since his wife and son, Noa, vanished under mysterious circumstances (many believe: were killed).
Joey and Tristan work as low-level thugs for the Kaibas. Yugi, his brother Atem, and Tea come in when those two show up at the Kame Game Shop making threats and demanding protection money (Tea happened to be visiting, and refuses to let them deal with the matter alone, no matter how much they plead with her to stay out of it and stay safe). Ditto for Duke Devlin at the Black Clown.
Seto’s been trained nonstop since he was 10 to be ruthless, efficient, and loyal. But Gozaburo miscalculated: to protect his younger brother Mokuba from leading the same life, he’s been plotting against Gozaburo and planning to take the entire organization down. Seto gets his chance when he figures out one of the women working for them, Mai Valentine, is actually an undercover detective.
Early on, Joey goes to ask Gozaburo for more responsibility, believing he’s ready to move up. Gozaburo’s response:
“You’re a blunt instrument. You’re a dumb fucking blunt instrument and you’ll do what you’re told. If I have to look you in the face again, you’ll regret it.”
Mai senses Joey and Tristan (who's always been more loyal to Joey than the Kaibas anyway) have potential to turn as informants. She’s about to contact them when Seto approaches her and reveals he knows who she is. Knowing she’s risking her life either way, she takes a gamble and trusts Seto. She tells him about her plan to talk to Joey and Tristan [Seto: “Who?”]. Finding out the Kame Game Shop is one of their targets, Seto makes a gamble of his own and approaches Yugi and Atem, asking them to help. They agree, seeing something in Seto no one else has since before he was adopted by Gozaburo all those years ago. Thanks to them, Duke agrees to help too; and so the whole gang unites to put Seto’s plan into action and ruin Gozaburo once and for all.

💞💥💌
Thank you friend! <3
💞what's the most important part of a story for you? the plot, the characters, the worldbuilding, the technical stuff (grammar etc), the figurative language
Jeez, this is a hard one. I think I have the most fun with world-building, and I personally click off of most stories that don't use proper grammar/paragraph breaks/dialogue tags so that's obviously important to me as a writer, but overall I'd say that having strong characters is what's really going to make or break a story.
You can have the most action-packed plot in the world, tailor it perfectly to the hero's journey, make the perfect 3-Act Structure Narrative, etc. etc.. But if people don't enjoy reading about the characters who have to carry out the decisions in your plot, the story is boring. How many people have stuck around for the compelling characters in a story with a thin or uninteresting plot, compared to unlikable or flat characters in fascinating circumstances?
The characters can and should inform your plot. If your characters aren't compelling, the plot dies with them. That's my philosophy, at least, and I'm sure there are people out there who disagree, but when I write, I always aim for interesting, well-rounded characters.
💥find your least kudos'd fic - say something wonderful about it.
According to my AO3 stats, the least kudos'd fic on my account, at 8 total kudos, is The Price of Oblivion. It's an old Overwatch fic that was supposed to be multichapter, but sadly I lost interest in it very quickly.
I actually do think the initial concept for this fic is one of the sickest I've ever had. Steampunk, eldritch magic, sentient robots, cyborgs, necromancy, there was a lot going on under the hood. It was supposed to be an expansion of a one-shot called Oblivion that I wrote for Zenyatta Appreciation Week 2018—which, for the record, is my highest kudos'd Overwatch fic. So I definitely had a good concept! I still love the one-shot! But sadly the writing juices never materialized. It happens.
💌share something with us about an up-and-coming work (WIP) that has you excited!
Well, those subscribed to me on Ko-Fi will have already read this, but I am STOKED to post Day 15 of AU-gust '22 on AO3 next month. Here's a little piece:
One case closed this month concerning the annual corrupt member on the Domino Chapter of the Mage’s Guild, and silence ever since. His other cases had gone cold, his leads dead or skipped town to avoid being traced. As much as his mentors liked to say otherwise, having a reputation had only made his life harder. Not that he blamed them for wanting to get as far away as possible.
Someone next door had been thinking extensively about the state of their home repairs for the past hour. His other neighbor couldn’t wait to get down to the pub after nightfall. The pair walking down the hall held nothing but contempt for each other, despite the friendly conversation. A new patron walked in the door of the office complex thinking unspeakable things about a stranger they’d seen on the street.
Atem was in all their heads. Whether he wanted to be or not.
If you love sad wet detectives, this is going to be a fun one.
[send me a fic writer ask]

Uncertainty
So! This was kind of unexpected! I guess writing pregnancy stuff is what stretches my longer-oneshot muscles? This is basically the entire timeline from the start of the pregnancy up to just past the birth for the royal twins au. I wasn’t sure if I should have Atem be trans or what, so I wrote it so the reader can just decide for themselves. To those reading this out of context of the au, basically, somebody who doesn’t like him or his family made him host to punish him for what his family’s done to them. It’s a whole thing. It’s fun.
Wordcount: 3,206
Warnings: Mentions of vomit, and a birth scene, although it’s not too detailed. And male pregnancy.
Something was wrong with him.
He didn’t want to admit it- he had to be strong, for both his court and his people. He was Pharaoh, the incarnation of Horus- if some weakness had sprung up, he couldn’t let anyone know about it.
That didn’t mean it went away.
He didn’t see anything at first, just started getting tired more quickly whenever he practiced his magic. He was hungrier all the time too, and started hanging out in the gardens more to sneak fruits from the trees.
Mana was as energetic as ever, but one day when they played hide and seek, his legs fell asleep and he couldn’t get them to move again even when she found him.
“Prince?”
“Just… give me a moment.” He grunted, trying to wiggle out of the corner he was wedged in, but a jolt rode through his back and he fell on his face.
She giggled before hearing him groan in pain.
“Oh, that wasn’t- are you all right?” She helped him to his feet, and he stumbled forward, nearly collapsing on top of her. She raised a hand to his forehead, and her eyes widened. “Mahad! Something’s-”
“No, don’t… he’ll worry.” Atem mumbled. “It’s just… some bad meat, that’s all.”
She bit her lip. “Are you sure?”
“I am. I’m… going to go back to my room.” He took a few deep breaths before pulling away from her.
“Tell me if you’re not feeling well later, all right? I’ll bring you some dessert!” She said, offering a hand to help him balance, but he brushed it off.
“I’ll be fine, but thank you.”
Once he got back to his room, his stomach twinged, and he curled around it.
Bad food, that was all.
___________
He was practicing trying to control his magic when his vision started going blurry. He shook his head to clear it, then concentrated on pulling up a ball of magic using the Puzzle as a channeling point, pushing the magic from his body to be amplified by the Puzzle and recharge his diadhank.
He didn’t realize he’d passed out until he woke up in the healer’s bed with Mahad fussing over him. The priest’s eyes were alit with fear he was trying to hide.
“My Pharaoh, what happened to you? You were doing fine, until…”
“You just fell over. Like a doll.” Mana was rocking on her heels, tugging at her dress.
“Have you attempted any particularly strenuous spells recently?” Mahad asked, crouching down as Atem sat up.
“Nothing out of the ordinary.” Atem said, before his stomach spun and he slapped a hand to his mouth.
Mana realized what was going on first and managed to grab a bowl and thrust it into his hands before he vomited.
“The healers wanted to examine you, make sure that there isn't any obvious cause. Are you sure there’s nothing you can remember?” Mahad moved to set a hand on Atem’s, but ended up letting his arm fall.
Atem shook his head, spitting out a bit of nasty-tasting bile.
“Nothing.”
__________
The healers could detect some kind of magic lingering around him, but it didn’t seem like it was dark or malicious- and the Puzzle had always had a strange aura anyhow, so perhaps it had just been that.
He was released a day later- although they’d wanted to continue checking him over, he couldn’t stay. He had a kingdom to run, and the people needed to see him strong, on the throne.
He fought back nausea at dinner at the smell of fish, but forced up a smile, rubbing his stomach under the table in a vain attempt to keep it calm.
Mana didn’t seem to be buying it, but didn’t make a scene, for which he was grateful.
He found himself eating entirely sweet bread, and spent the night trying to fall asleep under an over-full belly that kept cramping, and woke up with his cheeks flushed before immediately vomiting.
___________
Akhenaden was arguing about whether or not they should open trade routes to the north with Isis, which was a rather dumb thing to do in Atem’s opinion. Isis knew the future, didn’t she? She would know best what risks and rewards it would entail. They’d been here for hours, and he’d skipped breakfast to meet with a diplomat.
His stomach gurgled, and he felt sweat drip down his cheeks.
“Are you… all right, my Pharaoh?” Kalim brushed a hand over Atem’s forehead, just below his headpiece. “You’re burning like a fire!”
“I’m… I’m fine.” Atem tried to insist, but when he tried to stand up, he stumbled against the priest’s chest. Oh, he hated being short…
Isis strode out of the room, then sternly told a guard, “Someone get the healers. Something is seriously wrong with the Pharaoh.”
“It’s not that bad…” Atem tried to give her a weak smile, but a twinge in his gut paired with a sudden sucking in his soul, like all his energy was being slurped up.
Isis was in front of him, when had that happened?
“It is. I can’t tell what it is, and that worries me.”
Atem squeezed his eyes shut. “I’ll… deal with it…”
“We’re here so you don’t have to. You had to take the throne younger than your father did, and you shouldn’t fear help.” Isis said, setting a hand against his cheek, and despite himself, he leaned into it.
“...Thank you.” He said quietly.
__________
It had been weeks since he’d started feeling weak and sick when his stomach began to swell.
At first, he attributed it to a small bloat after a large dinner the night before, but as the days went on, it refused to go down. On top of that, it was hard.
He hadn’t worn the tightest of clothes before, so it didn’t alert anyone at first that a new symptom of this strange disease had manifested.
Once again, the healers looked for a cause either magical or physical for his strange new weakness, but once again turned up nothing. He was beginning to wonder if the Gods were displeased with him- if he’d angered them somehow.
Mana was at his bedside today- he’d felt particularly awful and hadn’t had the heart or the energy to wave her off.
“Maybe someone cursed you.” She suggested, and he threw a hand over his sweaty forehead. He felt too gross to wear any of his gold, and his skin seemed bare without it.
“They thought of that, but there wasn’t any more shadow magic than usual.”
“Hmm. Maybe you’re going through some kind of purification, so the Gods know you’re worthy?” She tilted her head. “I don’t know why they’d do that, you’re clearly fine. You care about the people.”
Before she could think up a new theory, a woman brushed past them, and Atem winced as he heard retching and wet splatters.
“Ugh, after all this trouble, you’d better be a damned good help.” She muttered to herself, setting a hand on her swollen belly, and without thinking, Atem’s fingers rested on top of his own. Mana noticed, then looked up at him and moved hers to rest on top of his stomach. She froze when she felt the slight firm, rounded curve.
“Do you think…?”
He blinked at her. “Think...?”
“Well, maybe… if…” She gestured to the woman. “Maybe the Gods wanted to bless you with heirs you know are legitimate.”
“What are you-” The color in his face drained, and his fingers tightened around the cloth of his robe. “That’s… impossible. I’ve never-”
“Nothing’s impossible with magic, you just have to know how to break the rules in the right way.” Mana said. “I’m not saying that’s what it is, it’s just an idea.”
He swallowed. “I hope an idea is all that it is.”
________
As the weeks passed and his stomach only continued to grow, the conversation with Mana clawed the back of his mind like a jackal, until he called Isis and Mahad in. He liked them best.
“I… have an idea, of what may be happening, but you both must promise to take me seriously.”
They nodded almost in unison, and Atem took a breath before peeling off his robe. He’d wrapped a shenti around his waist beforehand, so he wasn’t completely nude, and heard twin gasps.
“My Pharaoh, it looks…”
“Pregnant.” Atem said quietly. “I don’t know how or why, I’ve never done anything that could have led to this, but somehow... I’m fairly certain of it.”
Isis folded her hands together, and Atem could see the far-off look she got when she was using the Tauk.
“Oh. Oh, this is…” She shook her head to clear it. “I cannot see your future directly, as you know, but… you appear to be right.”
Atem buried his face in his hands, and Mahad knelt down to pull them away.
“We will figure out how this came to be, and be rid of it, if that is what you want.”
“I… I don’t know. Mana thought it was either a gift of a curse and I’m not sure myself. If it’s a gods-given miracle, it should stay, but if it’s a curse meant to kill me…” He trailed off. “The healers said they couldn’t detect any extra shadow magic, so it must be of the light. Give me… give me more time to think.”
Mahad stood up, handing him back his robe. “Of course, my Pharaoh.”
_________
It was obvious by the end of the second month. Atem wasn’t sure if it was because of his height, his age as he was just past 18 now or (gods forbid) multiples, but he swore he wore pregnancy much heavier than anyone he’d seen before. He wore looser clothes and stopped wearing a hard gold belt, but even that lasted only so long.
He cut back on food, to delay the inevitable, but the little miracle began to suck at his ba every time he tried, and he had several near-misses with passing out in front of half of his court, so he stopped that and started eating four meals a day.
The people had to know at some point, but his urge to be honest conflicted with the shame that burned through his belly every time he thought of the reactions people would have. Would they insist he step down, that he was cursed?
Not to mention, he still had no idea whether it was to be a good or bad thing. Clearly it was magic in nature, but he could be raising a demon, set to slaughter everything once it was born, for all he knew.
He pulled his knees as far up to his chest as he could, (he could feel his stomach against his legs now) groaning as it began to pull at his ba again. Sometimes, it did that even after he’d eaten. Maybe it needed the magic, which didn’t help the idea that it might be something unearthly.
“Prin-Pharaoh?” Mana rapped on the door. “I brought some sweet dough.”
“Thank you, Mana.” He said quietly. “Just… set it on the table.”
Mana did, but then sat down next to him. “Have you considered what to do with it?”
“I… don’t particularly want to think about it.” He mumbled into his knees. “If it’s a monster, we’ll have to kill it, so I don’t want to get attached. If it’s a person… I suppose I’ll be a father then, won’t I?”
“I’ll help. I like kids.” Mana said, setting a hand on his. “Everyone wants to help, Atem. You’ll get through this.” She grabbed a little dough ball drizzled with honey and held it up to his lips. “You look like you need something sweet.”
Atem allowed her to feed him the dough, and a little smile spread across his face.”Maybe I did.”
His stomach still cramped, but it wasn’t... the end of the world, at least.
__________
It had been months, and it was obvious now- either it was multiples, or it wasn’t human. Or both.
The healer settled both hands on his belly, and he fought the urge to buck as magic probed inside of him.
“Yes… I sense more than one presence.” He’d taken the Puzzle off, and Mana currently was wringing the life out of the string that held it.
“Is it just me and it, or…?”
“I cannot be certain, as it’s so young, but it does seem to be three, with you.”
Atem bit his lip- birth was already dangerous, but having twins? He wasn’t sure how he was to get out one, much less two.
“We will do the best that we can for you, my Pharaoh. I promise on my life.” The healer gave him a weary smile. “We have delivered twins safely before. It’s difficult, but your natural magic should help.”
He just nodded like a boat bobbing in the Nile, hoping no one saw him swallow nervously. He wished for the first time in a while that his mother was there so he could ask her what to do.
__________
By the middle of the pregnancy, half the city knew. He gained weight only in his belly, and more than one event had seen him disappear into a back room to be sick or to soothe the fussy twins that had decided they liked kicking around.
He wasn’t sure how to respond, so he didn’t- he kept up public appearances, and tried to pretend that his midsection hadn’t swollen like a fatted calf. He stayed on his throne as much as possible when he needed to be seen, as he hated the idea of stumbling in front of a crowd.
No one dared directly challenge him, so he kept up a wall of strength and tucked himself away when needed to soothe the beast.
__________
He knew a few things about them. They liked meat, but weren’t very fond of fish. They liked light magic, but after about month six bucked and made him vomit if he wore the Puzzle for too long. They liked kicking at the worst times, especially when he wanted to sleep or was in important meetings.
They probably had lots of hair like he’d reportedly had, from how much his chest burned.
And, they forced him to get new clothes three separate times, as he kept outgrowing what the seamstresses thought would fit, which wasn’t very comforting.
By the time he approached the end, his back hurt, his stomach hurt, his hips hurt, and if he was honest, his ba felt drained more often than not.
He settled on his bed, stomach settled on top of his legs as they turned around inside of him.
“You’re coming out soon. You had better, because I don’t know how much more my body can handle.” He told them sternly. He let a hand slowly drift down the side of his stomach, catching on a stretchmark, and felt one of them press out to meet him. Without thinking, he smiled. “I wonder if you’re boys or girls or one of each. You… I hope you’re not monsters, but I can’t know everything. Isis has apologized six times, that she can’t tell me. Can you? One kick for boy, two for girl.”
At that, the hand just kind of followed along the length of his palm, which wasn’t much of an answer. Not that he’d really been expecting one.
He sighed. “All right. I’ll find out soon enough.” He rolled over, one hand resting on top of his belly, as he tried to fall asleep.
_________
He realized labor was starting the exact second that his thighs seemed to light on fire in the middle of a discussion on safety in the city. There were rumors that the king of thieves had been spotted- and that one of the smaller tombs had been broken into, so although they’d wanted him to stay in his room, he insisted on being a part of the discussion- something he sorely regretted now. He bit back a scream so hard that his lip started bleeding, and Kalim was the one to notice that his seat was already soaked with fluid.
He didn’t hesitate- he immediately scooped Atem up. Atem would have been embarrassed, but all he could focus on was what felt like someone harshly strumming on the sensitive area between his thighs like a harp that they wanted to break in half just by playing it. “A-ah…” He curled up, desperately wishing to be anywhere but there as he was carried to the healer’s ward. His stomach was cramping horribly, and he could feel them moving around more than usual, eager to be out.
Warm body was exchanged for cool bed as he gasped, gripping the fabric of his robe around the thighs as his hips bucked up.
“Try to stay still.” The head healer said, and Atem squeezed his eyes shut as she gently touched the edges of it. “We’ll be able to see the little ones soon.” She eased his robe up to the middle of his stomach, and rubbed the bottom of it. Her fingers seemed cold. “If all goes well, you’ll be done soon. You’ve done so well.”
Atem nodded quickly. “H-how long…?”
“It depends. It can be long or short.” She examined him again. “Hopefully it won’t be too long, I can see it beginning to widen.”
“Thank the gods.” Atem said, tearing the cloth of his robe as a particularly harsh contraction rolled through him.
________
It did not go shortly, and the widening had not stuck- lucky him, it was some kind of false start. The sun was setting by the time the contractions started actually pushing anything out, and Atem had almost entirely ruined not only his robe, but the piece of leather he’d been given to grip and bite when the pain got to be too bad. Mana and Mahad had arrived by then, and he’d apologize for possibly breaking her hand from his tight grip if he hadn’t nearly passed out three separate times.
His slender hips hadn’t been meant for childbirth, at least not yet, and it made the process excruciating, but eventually, he managed to push both of them out. The older of the two had twisted, wet hair that appeared to be white, while the younger had red sparked with gold on the ends.
Both looked completely human, and if he wasn’t already crying, he would have wept in relief.
“They’re beautiful, my Pharaoh.” The healer said, dabbing at his forehead with a piece of cloth, and he stared down as the one with firey hair yawned.
They were plump and the same rich brown as him, not something unearthly like red or purple. He could see his nose and the shape of his eyes in both of them. Whoever had done this had mixed him in- he could even see the spikes of his own hair in the firstborn. “They are.”
Twin pairs of amethyst lighter than his own blinked up at him, and he wondered for the thousandth time where they had come from.
He was going to find out eventually, one way or another.
But for now, he was content with taking one last look before falling back on the bed and letting everything wash away as unconsciousness took him.
