Yu⭐︎Gi⭐︎Oh X Prince of Egypt

A set of screenshot redraws from Dreamwork's The Prince of Egypt (1998, Chapman, Hickner, Wells) ft. Atem and Bakura.

During the destruction of Kul Elna, Bakura's mother manages to hide her son in a basket and send it down the Nile. It streams into the pharaonic palace just when Atem and his mother are bathing and Atem's mother picks up Bakura, adopting him as her own. Atem and Bakura grow up as close brothers though Atem as the crown prince is under significantly more pressure than Bakura who doesn't have Egypt's future fate on his shoulders.

After a celebration to promote Atem into prince regent, Bakura follows a woman who snuck into the palace and when he confronts her down in the city, she reveals to him that he was born in Kul Elna. Though Bakura initially rejects her, the idea doesn't leave him and finding a mural in the palace, the truth and past are revealed. Unable to continue living under such cruelty but equally unable to change it as he is, Bakura decides to leave the palace and therefore Atem.

Atem tries to hold him back, terrified to lose his closest confidant, but Bakura is disgusted with him and all that he and the pharaonic lineage stand for. He turns his back on the palace and runs away deep into the desert. There he meets the mysterious woman again, finding out yet more about his history and the Millennium Items.

When Bakura returns to Khemet with the Millennium Ring, it's out of righteous fury to avenge the souls that were lost in Kul Elna. By then though, Atem has ascended to Pharaoh and while at first he's happy to see Bakura back, when he finds out his plan even the last remains of their once relationship is shattered.

I've been sitting on the screenshots for this redraw for almost exactly a year according to my drawing file. Didn't really work on them until this weekend though. Now that I did though, it was 100% worth it, both as composition and background practise and because it just works soooo well as a yugioh AU!

The brotherly relationship between Rameses and Moses from PoE could really enhance the drama of Atem and Bakura's relationship, and Bakura's righteous crusade fits to Moses' brilliantly as well. Though I think in this case it would be Atem who reaches out to Bakura instead of Moses to Ramesses.

Rejection and a final breakup between the two might still happen regardless. Though if Atem has chance to find out about Kul Elna and the history of the Millennium Items, coupled with having had a previous relationship with Bakura? Maybe they're able to create a happier ending after all :)

yugi and atem in a post canon scenario always going to hang out with bakura and ryou at their apartment and stay the night, and it happens so much that ryou is eventually like "why dont we all just buy a bigger place together?" and everyone tries to play off how bad they want that but they all agree to

when they're actually looking for places, its starts out as just a big apartment like 'oh haha just a starter place until all of us figure our lives out and go our separate ways' but somewhere along the line they've all decided they may as well get a house instead because why not if they're all putting money towards it, and then they settle in and make it so much their home that they all agree it'd be silly to leave, they may as well just spend the rest of their lives together there haha its no big deal (it is such a big deal that they're all separately trying to figure out if they can do a 4 way marriage)

my nickname hcs for the extended yugioh polycule

kaiba - almost never uses nice nicknames. he has plenty of mean ones but luckily jou is into that. he gets super flustered when they're used on him though, it's almost embarrassingly easy to rile him up into a blushing catastrophe in public at which point he automatically switches into tsundere mode and tries to duel them to recover his dignity; in private he's more relaxed and its more along the lines of fond exasperation

atem - "aibou" is exclusive to yugi but atem loves calling all his partners every sappy and besotted name he can think of; "my light", "my ib", "habibi", etc etc forever. almost never refers to any of them by name unless its so other people know who he's talking about. along with the above he exclusively refers to kaiba as "kaiba" because he associates "seto" with the priest from ancient egypt. tkb is exclusively "thief", even once they start to get along ("thief (loathing)" versus "thief (affectionate)"

yugi - in public its "kaiba" "jounouchi" and "other me" (out of force of habit in atems case) bc he's very shy about keeping his personal life separate from other people. in private he'll use "seto" "katsuya" "tem" and drop endless compliments left and right, and he takes immense joy in seeing how flustered he can get them just with things like "darling" "my love" etc. his favorite game is occasionally in public he'll surprise them by whispering in their ears in front of people when they cant retaliate (its super effective on kaiba and tkb! not very effective on atem. neutral damage to jou and ryou)

jounouchi - "yuug" is his big one. he still calls atem "pharaoh" out of habit but he's slowly breaking out of it to pivot to just "atem". his nicknames are also on the sillier side and less romantic (type of guy to call his boyfriends "bro"). eventually he eases into "seto" once they get past their many issues.

tkb/yamiba - he's got nicknames for everything and everyone, whether he likes you or not. most of the difference is in his tonal variation. his favorites for atem are variations of "horus" and "morning and evening star." ryou is his beloved "landlord" of course; yugi gets "vessel" until they actually get to know each other. the only time he'll ever use someone's actual name instead of a nickname is if he respects them.

ryou - he's incredibly awkward, and in public will pretty much stick to family names only unless he's been given explicit permission to use someones first name, and even then it takes him a while to warm up to it. bakura is "spirit" "leech" or "parasite" depending on how charitable he's feeling. in private he tends to lean towards more oldfashioned nicknames like "dear" and "sweetheart"

Atem wants to do something nice for tkb, so he invites him on a vacation for two that he won at a raffle or something and they go there and Bakura is convinced that the only reason Atem invited him on a semi-romantic get away alone is because he wants to kill him.

So like any smart person, Bakura would instead constantly make attempts at Atem's life so he wouldn't be the one to die, but all his murder schemes fail and end up looking like weird attempts at flirting on his side and Atem is completely charmed by that and he thinks Bakura's only goal by accepting the invitation is to woo him.

Hijinks ensue and they accidentally get married or something.
