What I love most about Det. Diaz coming out as bi on Brooklyn 99 is ...
… well, there are a lot of things I love about it:
She’s a WoC
She’s not a white-passing WoC (therefore she can’t be used as a proxy for white bi women who will try to use her to tell their story through the prism of their own experience)
She’s not a WoC who we only see associating with PoC who are her relatives (yes, it makes a difference)
But most of all, I love the way it was handled. No fanfare. No central episodic storyline. No angst. No melodrama that felt out of character from the Rosa we’ve known for the last 4-½ years. It was just a woman who is very private about her romantic relationships stating matter-of-factly that she’s bi, and letting it land.
It didn’t come across like an after-school special like so many other shows try to do. It didn’t become the only aspect of her identity that mattered, or the only detail about her life that defined her. Because I swear, if you let white LGBTQ+ people tell it, the only thing that matters about LGBTQ+ people is their orientation – a reality I have found often completely alien to most Queers of Color.
Often when white LGBTQ+ people talk about “Representation Matters,” what they mean is how their representation matters in reflecting experiences as only white LGBTQ+ people experience them. Their voice because the only voice. Their experience becomes the “norm.” And all representation must be presented in a way that meets their approval. (::cough:: Star Trek Beyond ::cough::)
So I’m not surprised Det. Diaz’ coming out is receiving positive responses. But I am still very grateful that she didn’t come out as what I call a “Hello! My name is Biromantic Pansexual” character. She came out like a person who doesn’t treat their orientation like it’s the end-all-be-all of their existence. It’s important to her, but it’s not so important it dwarfs everything else about her that makes her who she is. As a character, Det. Diaz was allowed to develop, come out, and be treated as the “norm” (i.e., like a person).
Thank you for that, Brooklyn 99 writers.
I haven’t been this proud of your treatment of Rosa since you allowed her friendship with Det. Boyle to remain platonic-only, even after he constantly professed his love for her – and, wait for it – Boyle took it with grace and backed down.

for the ask game, brooklyn 99!🥰
Favorite female character: Trudy Judy, Det. Rosa Diaz and Captain Amy Santiago
Favorite male characters: Doug Judy, Lt. Terry Jeffords, Pr. Kevin Cozner and Captain Raymond Holt.
My favorite season: probably season six because it was right when they got cancelled and moved to NBC and the storyline really picked up around then because Peraltiago got married and we got the maritial bliss.
My favorite episode: YIIIKES. Okay so I'm gonna go with a top three: Halloween III (or any of the heists), The Box, and The Last Case because it was one of the best television endings I've ever seen. Like it reminded us its a family drama that takes place in a police station.
Favorite Cast Member: Andy Samberg. one of my first dates with my husband was at his (now our) house watching Popstar. Also Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers lives rent at our house.
My favorite ship: I don't know their ship name but it's Holt x Kevin
A Character I Will Die Defending: CHEDDAR AND ARLO
A Character I Just Can't Sympathize With: Pimento or Roger Peralta (but I fucking love Bradley Whitford because he's my favorite manic mess on West Wing)
A Character I Grew To Love: Hitchcock and Scully. No I will not being taking questions on this.

Next in my line of detective sketches! Det. Bridget L. Maza, my N route detective. She is a homage to a childhood favorite and current adult favorite Elisa Maza(Gargoyles) and Rosa Diaz(B99) she is a bit more professional than Eris, more of the classic detective type, but still very charming and friendly <3

So Brooklyn 99 went and did what I hoped they wouldn’t do and ...
… it wasn’t too terrible. Granted, I typically loathe “very special episodes” about a character coming out because they often feel unrealistic, hyper-melodramatic and the tone often mimics an ‘80s after-school special script. But Brooklyn 99′s “very special episode” wasn’t all that bad.
I kind of wished they had waited a week, and brought back Gina Linetti in an episode by itself – her comeback deserves to be an A-storyline with central focus. Then, they could do the episode of Det. Rosa Diaz coming out to her parents, but I think the Gina comeback may have helped soften the edges of the episode’s message. (I’ve already seen complaints from some people about how they hate when shows try to force the gay agenda. ::insert Anderson Cooper eyeroll::)
Also, it just felt 10x more realistic than pretty much any coming out episode I’ve seen on American television in about a decade. So kudos to the writers on that one. I’m sure Stephanie Beatriz offered some feedback into how she thought the coming out should go.
Other things I liked about the episode:
Machete!! Danny Trejo as Rosa’s Dad is just a major win for her character. It adds to the general badassery and mystique that makes Rosa such a bomb character to begin with.
The actress who plays Rosa Diaz’s Mom, Olga Merediz, looks like she could actually be Stephanie’s Mom. Another good casting choice!
I was thisclose to cringing when Rosa asked Jake to pretend to be her boyfriend when they went to dinner. That moment teetered way too close to farce territory, and I quietly said, “Please don’t turn this into a Three’s Company bit.” Then, they subverted it and kept it realistic. Thank goodness!
Scully Hitchcock being self-aware enough to know that the question he was going to ask when Diaz came out to the squad at the station was hella-inappropriate before he even said it made me crack up.
I think Kelly Kapowski and Lisa Turtle were equal in attractiveness, but who picks Zack over Slater? Seriously, Rosa?
Her parents’ initial rejection of Rosa’s bisexuality falls right in line with many of the same comments bi people hear on a regular basis – including within the LGBTQ+ community. (”It’s just a phase,” “Well, you’re still attracted to men, so it’s OK,” “There’s no such thing as bisexual,” etc.) So I respect the fact that there was no violent behavior or language thrown around, but Rosa was still hurt by their rejection. Again, realistic because the power behind those statements can hurt just as much as any fist.
I’ve missed Gina Linetti something fierce!! That is all. 😁
I also appreciate the second trope reversal where it’s the father who comes around to their kid being same-gender loving before the mother. So often the cliche is to show the Mom being the more understanding parent, but this time, it was the Dad. I also like how the family conflict wasn’t easily resolved by the end of the episode. Again with the realism.
I didn’t cry at the end when the squad came by Diaz’s apartment for a “family” game night, but I did think it was sweet and awesome. Rosa was just getting close to her family after she was released from prison, so I love that Jake immediately understood how, despite her tough exterior, Diaz needed her family. So he reminded her that she has another one.
Captain Holt’s short speech at the end:
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts:
I’m really glad they had her parents’ rejection was portrayed sans violence or abusive/hateful language. Too often, because white LGBTQ+ people control the narrative about coming out, some white people love to believe that all queers of color live in mortal fear of coming out, as if communities of color are pathologically predisposed to react to someone not being heterosexual with violence and uncontrollable anger. And we all know why.
Tumblr media
But from my personal experience, most stories about coming out in communities of color are rarely met with violence from their family and friends. Maybe by their classmates, bullies or others in the community, sure. But familial rejection for a lot of queers of color tends to be more along the lines of stupid questions, stupid jokes, insulting stereotypes, and general confusion. Like that great Key & Peele sketch. Or for a more personal example, when my cousin came out as a lesbian, off and on for a year, the men in my family would occasionally say: “I just don’t get that, but whatever man. She’s still my cuz.”
Maybe the reaction is different for men of color, so I certainly don’t want to stereotype or erase anyone’s experience. But I know a number of queers of color – especially Black folks – whose coming out was met with casual acceptance (”Yeah, we pretty much guessed that already.”), an outpouring of love (”Girl, come here and give me a hug! I know that couldn’t have been easy for you to share. I’m so proud of you.”), or general indifference (”Well, if she coming with you to Thanksgiving, tell her to bring a dessert.”)
Like I said, men of color and transpeople of color likely have a very different story to tell. But I appreciate seeing a coming out of a bisexual woman of color on American television that didn’t play to the stereotype that brown people coming out will automatically incur the wrath of violent rejection and abuse from their families. Not all of our families are brimming with religious zealots or hyper-masculine men. And our communities have no greater propensity toward violence than our white counterparts.
So thank you for that, BK99 writers.

NBC updated the "About" B99 page ahead of season 7:
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” follows the exploits of hilarious Det. Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and his diverse, lovable colleagues as they police the NYPD’s 99th Precinct. After Capt. Raymond Holt’s (Andre Braugher) demotion to patrolman at the end of season six, the squad’s world is turned upside down.
Rounding out the ensemble is the newly promoted Lt. Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews), a muscle-bound human mountain who loves nothing more than his three little daughters, except for a fresh carton of full-fat yogurt. The man loves yogurt. Reporting to him is Sgt. Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero), a consummate rule follower with a weak spot for dork dancing and her husband, Jake.
The other detectives in the squad include Jake’s best friend and human puppy dog, Det. Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio), and the incredibly secretive, tough-as-nails Det. Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz). Also part of the Nine-Nine are veteran officers Det. Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller) and Det. Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker), whose only skill as police officers are their ability to make a passable pot of coffee.
Created by Emmy Award-winning writer/producers Dan Goor and Michael Schur, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” won the 2014 Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical (Samberg). Emmy winner Braugher earned three consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series from 2014-16.
