Hi! I’m sorry you’re getting shitty anons about this and you’re probably sick of it so I apologise for asking this but I’m genuinely curious what made you start actively disliking zutara? Like, considering how much excellent and insightful content/meta you yourself used to make/write? I get that interests change over time and you’re totally valid!! the anons sending you hate over it are really dumb, but if you’d be ok with sharing, I’d be really interested in hearing why you’ve done almost a complete 180 on the ship? Was is just burnout/end of a hyper-obsession? Or was it some of us in the rest of the fandom that turned you off? Or was it even something about the ship/characters themselves that you changed your mind about? xx

In short, it was a combination of burnout, dissatisfaction with fandom, and disappointment in myself that caused my disinterest for Zvtara.

I got asks similar to this one a couple of times before, but I never gave a comprehensive answer, mainly because I didn't know how to articulate my reasons why I don't like it anymore. But now that I've been out of ZK fandom for a month and have had some time to reflect, I think I can give a much more thorough response. Beware, this is long and I heavily critique the Zvtara fandom, so if you're a ZK shipper, keep reading at your own risk.

My first minor annoyance with Zvtara is that the fandom has a tendency to idolize certain fics and creators. And while there’s certainly nothing inherently wrong about that, I feel like the Zvtara fandom does it to such an extent that it influences the type of content that content creators make in order to get recognition. And to illustrate my point, I’m going to talk about one of the most famous Zvtara fics of all time: Once Around The Sun by eleventy7.

Don’t get me wrong, I love OATS. I think it’s a great fanfic and I think the author devoted a lot of time and effort to make it such an excellent fic. The plot, the development of the characters and their relationships to one other, and the messages about family and love were all brilliantly written. I mean, there is a reason why it’s regarded as the “Zvtara Bible”. This one fanfic had such a profound impact upon the ZK fandom, and I think the biggest impact that came from it is the dramatic influx of post-war Zvtara AU fanfiction.

Because so many people kept reading OATS and recommending it to others, I think there was an overall interest in ZK fics that take place in a post-war setting. And I think that all of the high praise towards OATS made more fic writers start to write post-war fanfics because of this demand for post-war AU.* I normally wouldn't complain about it because more content is more content, but in my opinion, 99% of ZK post-war fics are the same fic but in different fonts.

Like, there's at least 3 of these elements in every ZK post-war fanfic:

Ambassador Katara

An assassination attempt (usually on Zuko's life)

A healing scene between Zuko and Katara (usually Katara heals Zuko)

Aang and/or Mai is pushed to the side or vilified to some extent in order to make ZK happen

A private journey between Zuko and Katara to facilitate #6

S L O W B U R N (that's not really slowburn and more like "I love you and I very much want to be vocal about my feelings but #7 is in this fic" but the love story takes up like 30 chapters so I guess it's a slowburn?)

Zuko's advisers don't want him to get married to Katara because ✨racism✨

Ursa is found

Azula is in the fic because a) she's going to get a healing arc ft. Zuko and Katara and thereby helps them get together or b) she's the villain and thereby helps them get together

ZK wedding happens in the FN

After reading multiple post-war fics back to back, I could tell that the format was pretty much the same across the board, which isn't very interesting for me to read. My only other fic options in the Zvtara tag on AO3 are canon divergence fics which almost always take place during The Crossroads of Destiny or after The Southern Raiders. And to some extent, those stories are pretty much the same too. There's nothing really new or creative going on in the ZK fandom fic-wise, and because of that, my interest in ZK fandom started to dwindle.

My second issue with Zvtara is that it's a very old ship from a very old show. Because there's been 10+ years since the end of A:TLA, every nuanced point about shipping and the show itself have been talked to death.** There's just nothing new to say. It's the same arguments being rehashed over and over again in the tag because there's no other interpretation one can come up with.

For example, there's so many people who talk about why Zvtara as depicted in The Southern Raiders is not toxic and that's great and all, but I (and most likely many others) have read those same points about five times already. And for some reason, each time this happens, people act like someone just discovered the lost city of Atlantis when they bring up their new-but-not-new argument in defense of Zvtara. Honestly, I'm ashamed to say that I'm not exempt from being part of the group of people that reiterate old arguments. I've done it with one of my posts about The Southern Raiders and I've done it again with my Zutara/Omashu parallels post.

There's no new content to really dissect and analyze (especially considering Zuko and Katara are rarely in the same panel in any of the post-war comics), and because of this, people are just restating points that someone else made several years ago.*** And even if someone did have a different interpretation of an episode, their ideas would most likely be shut down because for the past several years, the same interpretation has been recycled through the fandom repeatedly and people are resistant to new perspectives.

This brings me to the third thing that I dislike about Zvtara: the insistence that there can only be one way to interpret The Southern Raiders. For the longest time, I've read take after take that said if Katara decided to kill Yon Rha, it would be ok because that's her grief to deal with and if she thinks that's the best way to mete out justice, then good for her. And again, I'm ashamed to say that I perpetuated that idea in a few of my own posts. I have always thought that "Katara killing Yon Rha is ok" is just a bad take in general, but I didn't want to vocalize that opinion when so many people—so many of the nice mutuals that I made—all shared that same opinion. Taking down a popular opinion of your own ship is completely different from taking down a popular opinion of a ship that you dislike. The Zvtara fandom is the first fandom that I was actually active in and I wanted to fit in so badly with everyone else that I just parroted whatever other people said, even if I didn't agree with those sentiments.

This leads me to my final reason why I don't want to be a part of ZK fandom anymore. I think I established myself as a "meta" person pretty early on and because of that, I constantly felt pressured to come up with new takes on the ship. And when people started flooding my ask box with stuff like "Can you write a meta about your thoughts on the idea that 'Zuko only took Katara on that field trip in TSR because he wanted her to forgive him'?" and "What are your thoughts about antis saying Zuko and Katara are toxic because of TSR?", I realized that I don't need to come up with new takes. People just want me to paraphrase something that 10 other people said about the same exact topic, because if I said what I actually thought about the subject (i.e. there is some truth in what antis say about TSR and it's not as much of a "Zvtara episode" that most people make it out to be), I'd probably get ZK shippers in the replies telling me that I'm wrong because x, y, and z or "you shouldn't tag this as Zvtara".

And that was pretty much how my love for ZK turned into disinterest. I was and still am disappointed that I didn't stick to my personal opinions. For as much as I talk about herd mentality on Twitter, I certainly don't practice what I preach. In all honesty, the only reason why I held on so long to ZK fandom was because I had so many nice mutuals there and we all shared this collective distaste for antis. I think I started to become more anti-Zvkka and anti-Kataang than pro-Zvtara, which isn't what I wanted to do when I made this Tumblr blog.

The thing that made me joke about becoming anti-Zvtara was the fact that some ZK shippers just like to send shitty anons to people whom they've reblogged countless different metas from. Sending shitty anons to people in the first place is wrong, but sending them to people who tagged their posts correctly and did nothing wrong is just disgusting.

*I'm not a fic writer and can't speak for fic writers, but it definitely feels like a lot of ZK fic authors are pushing themselves to write the next OATS, and by doing so, they are proliferating the tag with post-war fics that have very similar aspects to OATS.

**I think that as more people point out the same nuanced points about Zvtara, it diminishes the actual significance of those points. Like, it's hard to explain but the more people talk about the subtleties of the ship, the more those parts become glaringly obvious and I become numb to their actual impact on the characters and the show.

***At this point, if someone wanted to make a new argument about Zvtara, I think they would have to look very closely at every little detail in every single one of their scenes together to find a crumb of new meta material. And speaking from experience, it's not very fun trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. Whenever I post a "meta" like that, I feel like I'm reaching to make a point that doesn't exist.

The Masked Singer Season 5 Episode 10: Quarterfinals! ft the “fiesty five” (Commentary & Guesses... well me reiterating the same guesses but adding a new one yay!)

Hello my fellow Masked Singer fanatics! Welcome or welcome back to Ana’s Masked Singer recap, where I, Ana, recap every episode of The Masked Singer excluding those weird sing-a-longs and Road to Finals. If someone goes home and they all sing new songs, then you will most likely see me recap it! And that’s exactly what happened this time... quarterfinals baby! We are almost at the end, only 2 more weeks to go wow! 5 contestants remaining, so let’s start with our 5th place contestant, shall we?

So the person (or should I say people) coming in 5th place and getting eliminated this episode is...

*DRUMROLL PLEASE*

The Russian Dolls 🪆🪆🪆(yes, there are 3 of them)

Commentary: This one really surprised me honestly, I didn’t see this coming. Their performance of I’m Still Standing by Elton John was one of my favorite ones they have done honestly. I really enjoyed it, and even one of them was playing the freaking piano! Like it was super impressive and as always their harmonies are on point and insanely perfect.... that’s the only way I can explain it: perfect. Their voices work together perfectly, it’s like they’re a band of brothers or something (😉😉).

Anyways, they were revealed to be...

*DRUMROLL AGAIN*

Hanson (Wooo!)

Woohoo! Another one bites the dust, I got it correct yay.. 9/10 right so far. This is a new record for me, I usually get 2 wrong in the beginning reveals of previous seasons, so I am kinda proud of this so far yay! However, the reveal itself surprised me, I thought that they would make it at least to the semifinals if not the finale so this elimination I didn’t see coming. Especially after that performance which I think is one of their best. However, I was super nervous that they were gonna send Black Swan home so I was relieved by this ngl...

Anyways, having said that, let’s talk about the remaining 4 semifinalists:

1. Piglet 🐷

Commentary: Ok, so of all the performances this episode, his was the most surprising... because he started off sing OPERA. Honestly, I would have never thought Nick Lachey can sing in Italian and have that strong Operatic voice... the more you know man. However, he actually continued by singing Supertitous by Stevie Wonder which was a bit of a let down.. as I have said multiple times, his best is with ballads and his voice isn’t suited for upbeat songs like this one. In this case, he started at an all time high 📈 and it got me hyped but then it kind of died down 📉 by the middle and end. I did enjoy the performance tho but I wish he would have just sang opera the entire time because it left me wanting to hear more of the opera song.

2. Chameleon 🦎

Commentary: again I say, I am so sorry to people who are rap fans and/or fans of the chameleon/Wiz Khalifa, but I honestly feel like he should have gone home instead of the dolls. His performance of “Drop it like it’s not” by Snoop Dogg was not his best one, and his rapping is getting kinda repetitive at this point,even tho he is very good at it. Also, side note, the judges had the audacity to say that they thought this was Snoop even tho he sang a song by the guy and in the song he legit spelled “S-n-double o-p D-o-double g....” like um if it were Snoop, he wouldn’t be THAT obvious. Anyways, yeah I predict he is next to go.

3. Yeti ❄️☃️

Commentary: Alright, so Yeti is really surprising me honestly, quickly becoming my second favorite after my girl Black Swan. He is such a versatile performer, I never would have expected Omarion to rap, dance, roller skate, do R&B songs, and now sing some country. It made me nervous at first when he said country in the clue package, because I know him as a R&B musician, but I was really pleasantly surprised with his performance of Bless the Broken Road by Rascal Flatts, it was really smooth and unexpectedly great!

4. Black Swan 🖤🦢

Commentary: Speaking of my girl, here she is... omg I love her, please win girl, I beg of you! Her performance of Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran was.... um... interesting.... in the song choice department. It was absolutely not her best performance, but I gotta give her credit that she did make the song her own. However, she has so much range in her voice and she absolutely didn’t showcase it with this song. I really want Jojo in the semifinals to step it up and choose songs that I know she can absolutely crush like songs by female R&B and Soul singers (some of these do mix these genres with pop but u get me) that are still mainstream enough that people know them (i.e. Aretha Franklin, Destiny’s Child/Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, etc.).... even like them pop girlies who have like crazy ranges, y’all know who I am talking about: Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande, Celine Dion, Tori Kelly, etc. Please girl give me something with more oomph and that will give me goosebumps, because she can do that stuff but I feel like she is holding back. It’s gonna be the semifinals, I really hope she doesn’t hold back!

Bonus Jonas: Clueluedoo aka the freaking clue chicken...let’s talk about who I think he is (since he will be revealed next week!) 🐓

Commentary: ok like please Masked Singer I beg of you, never give me this character again, who doesn’t even sing but interrupts people with clues or something idk... I didn’t like this concept, it was strange, sometimes he was MIA and sometimes he got annoying... so I really hope next season they don’t bring this back. But at the same time, I kinda understand why they did do it this time based on who I feel like it is

I think he is...

Donnie Wahlberg (aka Jenny’s husband)

Reasoning: ok, you might know him from New Kidz on the Block or because his family is very famous... but he is married to one of the judges, Jenny McCarthy, and I feel like that’s why Masked Singer decided to take the “he doesn’t sing nor get any clues on the show til the end” route but still give him this weird clue route... I get it, I didn’t like it, but I understand it. Anyways, here’s why I think so (only clues imma provide for y’all)

He has never been on the show, as a contestant nor judge= this was on the Masked Singer podcast, and this is true, which rules out another popular guess, Joel McHale

He has a connection with one of the contestants= that would be Nick Lachey, they toured together (New Kidz on the block and 98 degrees did)

He pointed out Ken and Jenny specifically= he’s married to Jenny duh... and Ken is a family friend of theirs, they have dinner at each other’s houses a lot

He’s known in the kitchen (also from the podcast)= yup, he is known for his burgers (Wahlburgers)

Also, in the preview, Jenny is seen freaking out and falling on the floor, probably because that’s her husband and she prob guessed him incorrect but I didn’t so lol am I married to him? No... how did I get it then lmao 😂

Kingdom High Chapter 2

Warnings: same as the last chapter

Rating: SFW

Once upon a time... In a far away land, all eyes were on Apple as she made the most important declaration of her life.

“I am Apple White, daughter of Snow White, and I am ready to pledge my destiny,” She said. The students cheered for her. Suddenly everything froze.

Of course you'd start with Apple, always playing favorites. Start at the beginning of the school year.

Oh, fine. Gather round, friends, and let us tell you a story: the story of Ever After High, a high school for the teenage sons and daughters of the most famous fairy tale characters who ever lived. But this year was like no other for the students of Ever After High. Apple's Tale, the story of a Royal.

For it is the year of the Legacy Day; a momentous event where the students pledge to all the magical world to follow the same paths as their fairy tale parents. Apple and Briar were chatting and walking to the school.

“I can't believe it. Legacy Day happens this year and there's just ever so much to do!” Apple said.

“Totally, right! I mean this year's after party is gonna be a page ripper! I heard DJ N-Chant is gonna—” Briar said. Apple ran in front of Briar.

“Briar, it's not just about the party. This is destiny! Future queen! We can't let anyone post embarrassing pictures of us on MyChapter,” Apple said.

“Hey! Daughter of Sleeping Beauty. If I'm gonna be catching Z's for a hundred years, I gotta live it up now! Hm, and come on, no one would post anything bad about you!” Briar said as the two of them walked up the steps.

“Everybody loves you!” Briar said.

“It’s Apple White!” a pig swooned. A prince sighed, dreamily.

“Gorgeous!” Lilly-Bo Peep said. Her sheep bleated happily.

“Can I carry your books?” Tiny asked as he stepped in.

“Why, Tiny! Aren't you the sweetest little thing?” Apple said. She gave her books to him.

“Thank you!” She said.

“See? They love you! Oh-oh!” Briar said as she held Apple’s hands.

“I don't wanna miss a minute of our first day,” she said. Briar walked away to say hi to the other students.

“Hi, everybody! Hey, what's up? Howdy!” she said. In the distance was Daring Charming, standing alone with a hand over his mouth and laughing.

“Hey, Prince Daring! Um, why are you holding your hand over your mouth?” Apple said as she walked up to him.

“Well, you see, I just got my teeth whitened and Headmaster Grimm said I can't show people, 'cause...” Daring said.

“But your smile is so charming!”

“Well, you know...” He flashed his smile and it blinded Tiny.

“Ah! My eyes! I can't see! Ah!” Tiny said as he fell down.

“I’m okay!” he said. Daring and Apple giggled.

“Apple! Daring!” Blondie said. She giggled as Daring clicked his fingers.

“So, any juicy dating details for my Mirror Cast show?” she asked as she opened her MirrorPad.

“Talk to the Mirror!” she said as she pointed it at Apple.

“Ah, Blondie! Daring and I are still not a couple! This is high school,” Apple said. She held Daring’s hand.

“We've got forever after to be together!” she said.

“But you two are the perfect couple. Not too this, not too that, you're just right!” Blondie said.

“Come on, Apple, let's go get some lunch. Charm you later!” Daring said. He flashed his smile at Blondie and she covered her face. He and Apple walked away.

“Oh! Oh-ah!” Blondie giggled as she walked away.

And so that night, back in the Ever After dorms, Apple had a surprise waiting for her new roommate.

“You think Raven's gonna like this?” Briar asked. Apple ran over to her.

“Of course! What future Evil Queen wouldn't love an evil throne, an evil crown, and an evil haunted mirror?” Apple said.

“True. Huh. But why are you doing this for Raven?” Briar said.

“Because she's such an important part of my story! When she poisons me, it changes everything. Then the prince can wake me, and I become queen.” Apple held Briar’s hands.

“That's when I get my Happily Ever After,” she said as she winked.

“I need her!”

“Hey! Maddie?” Raven said from outside.

“Quick! Hide! I don't want Raven to know you helped me,” Apple said.

“I'll go out the window. I've never done that before,” Briar said as she ran over to the window.

“Ha ha!” she said as she jumped out the window.

“Wheeeeeee...!” she said. Apple turned around when Raven opened the door.

“Welcome home, roomie!” she said.

“Huh, good one, Apple. I'm rooming with Maddie this year,” Raven said.

“Not anymore!” Apple shook her head confidently.

“Huh?” Raven asked.

“Man! I am good-looking!” Daring said as he held out his hands.

“ ...eeeeee! Oh!” Briar said. Daring had caught her in his arms.

“Daring? How'd you know I was gonna be here?” Briar asked.

“Catching damsels in distress:” Daring said as he dropped Briar.

“It's kinda my thing,” he said.

“Well, that was A TOTAL RUSH!” Briar said as she stood up and ran back.

“Stay here! I'm going again,” she laughed and Daring readied his arms. In Book End, Briar and Apple were walking together.

“Hey, you wanna get a hocus latte?” Briar asked.

“Oh, that sounds magical. I love mine with nutmeg. How do you like yours?” Apple said.

“Oh, I like a-lot-a-lot-a-lot-a-lot of cream.” The two giggled together and they found Ashlynn at the front of her shoe store.

“Hey!” Ashlynn said.

“Hi, Ashlynn!” Apple said.

“Wanna go on a nature hike later? I haven't been in the woods in days and it just feels so good to get back to what really matters.”

“I got a shipment here; a three hundred new shoes for the Glass Slipper,” the delivery goose said.

“New! Shoes! Ahhh haha! Where?!” Ashlynn said. The delivery goose pointed to the sky and more delivery geese flew by with several packages. They dropped them below and Ashlynn caught all of them.

“It's a shoe thing!” Briar said.

“Well, she is Cinderella's daughter!” Apple said. Briar nodded in agreement. Suddenly the bell rang.

“Ooh, time for our Legacy Day rehearsal. I can't wait for everyone to get a glimpse of the queen I am going to become,” Apple said. Briar followed Apple but accidentally caught a shoe box falling from above. Ashlynn snatched it out of her hands while catching hundreds of boxes. Back at school, some students were gathered together for their Legacy Day rehearsal.

But what Apple didn't know was that Raven Queen had other plans...

That would change the world for the better.

For the worse!

“So, when your magical key appears, you insert it gently into the Storybook of Legends, then stand; shoulders back, and declare your destiny to the world! Have I made myself clear?” Headmaster Grimm said.

“But what if...” Raven asked as she held up a finger.

“No questions? Good. Who will go first?” Apple inched forward and raised her hand.

“Oh! Me! Me! Me! Em! Ah! Uh! Uh!” she said.

“Step right this way,” Grimm said. Apple took the key in his hand.

“My future queen,” Grimm said as he bowed in respect.

“I am Apple White, and I pledge to follow my destiny as the next Snow White!” Apple said.

“Perfect!” Grimm said. Apple turned around and returned the key.

“I know,” she said. Suddenly, there were some girls in the distance.

“Excuse me! Are you Headmaster Grimm?” one of the girls said.

“Yes, I am. Who might you be?” Grimm said.

“My name is Akaya. And these are my friends.” Akaya introduced her friends.

“Ahh, you must be our new transfer students. Come, come. We’re just doing our Legacy Day rehearsal,” Grimm said. The girls walked over to the platform and stood next to the students.

“Hi, I’m Apple White,” Apple whispered to Akaya.

“Hi, I’m Akaya.”

“That’s a pretty name. Are you a royal or a rebel?”

“I’m a royal.”

“Cool. I hope we get to be good friends this year.”

“Me too.” Akaya watched as the other students practiced their pledge.

“ I am Briar Beauty and I pledge to follow in my mom's footsteps and sleep for a hundred years,” Briar said, boringly.

“BUT BEFORE I DO, I'm gonna live every minute! Oh, speaking of which, my dorm room, Friday night, we're gonna blow the roof off the place, and—” she said.

“Next!” Grimm interrupted. Daring danced over to the podium.

“Hey, there! Charming. Daring Charming. I pledge to be just like my old man, King Charming: brave, good-looking, kind, good-looking, thoughtful, and good-looking,” he said as he clicked and smiled.

“Next!” Grimm said. Akaya walked over to the podium, nervously.

“U-um, my name is Akaya. A-and I pledge to b-become the next guardian o-of light,” she said.

“Excellent. Next!” Grimm said. Akaya walked back and stood next to Apple.

“Phew, didn’t know that it was that scary,” Akaya said.

“You did great!” Apple said.

“Thank you!” Akaya’s friends had their turn and it was not Raven’s turn.

“I'm Raven Queen and I pledge to follow my destiny as... um... I have a question,” she said.

“What is it?” Grimm asked.

“I was just wondering, I mean, what if I don't want to take the pledge?” Everyone gasped except for Akaya and her friends. Apple’s mouth fell open and Daring shutted her mouth.

“She has to do it!” she said as she smacked Daring in the face by accident.

“I mean, if-if she never poisons me, then I'll never fall asleep, and-and I'll never be kissed by my prince, and I'll never become queen, and I'll never have my Happily Ever After!” she said as she throttled Daring lightly.

“Now, Raven, erase that dangerous idea from your head. Continue!” Grimm said.

“I have to go,” Raven said as she ran off.

“What?!” Apple asked.

“But the rules are... The rules!” Grimm said.

“Um, what happens if you don’t take the pledge?” Akaya asked Apple.

“Something really bad happens to you,” she said.

“Oh.” Akaya looked at the podium nervously. Apple ran to the Enchanted Forest and cried.

And so Apple took refuge that night in the Enchanted Forest, wondering what would become of her destiny should Raven not follow hers.

Apple gasped as the Headmaster appeared right in front of her.

“Oh! Headmaster Grimm?” she said.

“Forgive me for startling you, my dear. I need you to keep an eye on your roommate, Raven. We must follow the paths set out before us. It's the only way to keep our world safe. Please, watch Raven and convince her of this. I know you'll do whatever it takes,” Grimm said.

“I'll...” The Headmaster was gone before Apple could finish her sentence.

And so, on the grave portent about to befall Ever After High...

Must you always be so dramatic?

Must you always ruin my ominous endings? I mean...

You're always taking the Royal side...

I'm known for my endings...

Sora and the others watched as a large cloud of darkness was approaching them. Akaya was holding a crying Sayo in her arms.

“What can we do?” Akaya asked.

“Nothing. We’ve lost,” Sora said. The cloud of darkness invaded their home and everyone was transported to another world, far away from their original one.

FGO Destiny Awakenings: Fuyuki Singularity Section 8

Emiya pointing to the Caster: Look at this idiot with you. Emiya pointing to the left: Now imagine this idiot being a Lancer. Emiya: The point of this explanation is to show you that regardless which form they are summoned, they are both idiotic dogs. But the difference is that they are both different kind of Servants. Ritsuka & Ritsuko: *nods* I understand... Caster Cu: *vein marks popping* You're really an itching for a fight, are you?!

The Dark Cave

“Stars, cosmos, gods, animus…”

Inside a cave, Olga Marie squatted down and planted small pieces of rock in the heart of the glowing magic circle. After deemed that Mash had adequate training, they made their move into the cave leading to the grail.

Decided they required a 10-minute break before pushing on, Olga Marie cast spells for their own defense at their enemies. The siblings and Mash sat on the ground with Romani’s voice guiding them.

The Director wrote another symbol on another piece of rock she took while chanting.

“Hollow, void, anima, Animusphere…”

Once the symbol glowed and went into the rock, she continued the renewed process. Caster manifested behind her and his head peered over at the magic circle. “You’re working hard.”

“Better than nothing, right?” Olga Marie answered without glancing at him.

“Hmm,” Hummed himself with a smile, Caster casually picked up a few of the rock pieces into his hand.

Spun her head upwards, Olga Marie glared. “Hey, don’t touch without permission!”

As Olga Marie stood up to retrieve her rocks back, the Fujimaru siblings stared at the data presented on Ritsuka’s projected holographic image from his wristwatch. Romani’s voice ended. “And, that’s how you can find the Servants origin list and Noble Phantasm.”

“I see,” Ritsuka nodded as he used his finger to scroll through the information. He paused for a moment to pinch the bridge of his nose from a headache before continuing. “A defensive-type of skill and Noble Phantasm…”

“This is the data that have collected from Caster’s training,” Romani explained. “Even though her agility is weak with the heavy shield, Mash can carry on with her Rank A endurance at any attacks hurled at her.”

“Her mana strength is great too,” Ritsuko pointed at the Rank B MP bar on the image. “You say she’s able to cast her skills quite well, no?”

“Yes, but it’ll take a moment before she could use it again normally,” Romani added.

Her violet orb examined at both, Mash tilted her head. “Senpai, did my training with Caster improve?”

Ritsuka’s orbs focused on the subject matter under the Noble Phantasm heading and murmured, “So, when it unleashed… It nullified any attacks thrown at her, including Noble Phantasm.

“Also…”

“Senpai?”

“Y-Yeah?” Ritsuka moved his head and spotted that Mash still awaited for her answer.

“After what the Doctor said, analyzed and what we’ve seen,” Ritsuka tilt his head to her and grinned. “You definitely did, Mash.”

“You improve a lot when we first arrived here,” Ritsuko raised thumbs-up from her hand and grinned too. “Good work, Mash-chan!”

Mash’s face lit up with a happy beam and bowed. “Yes, thank you very much, Senpais. I’ll work harder to make both of you proud!”

“Just don’t push yourself too hard, okay?” Ritsuko went over to Mash and patted her shoulders.

Eventually, Caster and Olga Marie moved over and the siblings stood up as they approached. Caster then said once they reached close to them. “The Greater Grail is back here. It’s a little further back, so stick close.”

With an agreed nod, the four followed Caster from behind deeply into the cave.

The natural dark cavern shape caught Mash’s attention as they continued walking. She shifted to the front and pointed out. “This place looks like a natural cave… Did this always exist in Fuyuki City?”

“Probably, it’s half-natural, half man-made.

“It’s the underground workshop expanded by mages over several years.”

Olga Marie explained.

She suddenly changed her gaze towards Caster. “Anyway, Caster. I forgot to ask you something important.”

Seeing that one of his red orbs glanced at her, the Director went on. “Do you know Saber’s True Name? It sounded like you’d fought several times.”

“Yes, I notice it,” Caster nodded and his lips set into a straight and thin line. “Anyone who gets hit by Saber’s Noble Phantasm will find out that bastard’s True Name…. The other Servants were all defeated because Saber’s Noble Phantasm was that powerful.”

“A powerful Noble Phantasm, is it? What was it like?” Mash prodded.

“The sister sword of the Sword in the Stone. It’s the most famous sacred sword in your time. Its name…”

Before Caster could reply finished, an unfamiliar masculine voice interrupted him.

“The Sword of Promised Victory, Excalibur. Wielded by King Arthur, the proud King of Knights.”

Fou stood up on Mash’s shoulders and growled at the figure before them. Ritsuko’s orange orbs widened at the surprise of the strange intruder before them. Ritsuka stood in front of his sister and wondered, “An enemy Servant?!”

Before them at the exit of an open field in the tunnel, a mysterious man stood in the middle. It was a youthful man in his mid-twenties with a muscular build. He had short white hair, gray eyes, and tanned skin color.

He put on a black body armor, which comprised a black tight and a sleeveless shirt. And black pants that had two black straps on his thighs, and another two strapped around his shins separate from each other. The said man also wore black metal plated shoes, which appear tied to his trousers.

“Archer!” Olga Marie deduced the identity of the enemy Servant.

Caster expressed a peeved look and glared at Archer. “Ah, speak of the devil. Or shall I say, the faithful follower? As always, I see you’re still the loyal knight.”

“Hmph, I don’t remember becoming a follower of anybody,” Archer replied. His hand manifested a black metallic bow and continued. “I’m just here to chase away unwanted visitors.”

“In other words, you’re the gatekeeper,” Caster stated. His staff raised and pointed at Archer while continued. “I don’t know why you’re protecting Saber, but let’s end this here. Isn’t a game that never ends boring? For better or worse, we need to move the pieces forward.”

“From the way you talk, I think you understand the circumstances. Yet you are still absorbed by your own desires,” Archer’s hand manifested a blade and converted a drill-shaped arrow.

He lifted and drew it back with his bow. “You still haven’t changed despite being a mage now. In that case, I will knock some sense into you.”

“Ha, big talk for a mere Archer,” Caster scoffed. One of his red orbs shifted to Mash and warned. “Hey, why are you standing there, young lady? He’s an Archer. Without your shield, I won’t have the time to cast my spells.”

“Ah… R-Right!” Mash shook up after pulling her attention back to the reality from their bantering. She stood beside Caster with her shield armed. “Sorry, I was out for a second there. But no problem, I can do this. For guarding, leave it to me!”

Gray orbs narrowed, Archer pulled back the bowstring and fired the projectile towards the two Masters. Before it was a quarter of its course towards them, Caster chanted. “Eihwaz!”

Flames came from the tip of the projectile and ignited into fires.

Archer remained unfazed and summoned another sword into his right hand.

As he placed the sword-turned-drill-shaped arrow, Caster grinned at him, “What’s wrong? Don’t tell me you don’t have the confidence to take two Servants on?”

Swiped his hand swiftly across in the air, a line of runic words emerged and launched out fireballs towards Archer. Flying towards him, Archer gritted his teeth, “Tch!”

The fireballs collided with him and exploded with thick black smoke covering their area. But as the blast of wind blew the smoke elsewhere, Archer jumped out from the smoke and discharged another shot to Caster. Mash intercepted by moving to Caster’s front and intercepted it with her shield.

Caster raised and spun his staff before tapping it onto the ground, “Ansuz!”

A runic word appeared beneath the staff on the ground. It glowed crimson as a burst of flame flared up and glided towards Archer. But, Archer leaped up into the air much to Caster’s chagrin.

With another drill-shaped arrow attached to the bowstring, Archer pulled it back and exclaimed. “You’re wide open!”

“Young lady!” Caster’s red orbs glanced to the violet-haired Servant.

“Right!” Mash again stood before Caster and raised her shield against the streaming energy bolt.

Caster twirled his staff and tapped it on the ground. “Beroc!”

Tree roots erupted from the ground and ascended towards Archer. It slammed Archer against the rocky cliff, receiving a painful groan from the enemy Servant. Despite the bruises, Archer raised its bow with his projectile and shot at them.

Caster shot a startled expression before pushing Mash to where her two Master stood. Ritsuko caught hold of her, “Mash-chan!”

The four now stared at a large blue bolt of energy heading towards them. As fear showed on their faces, Caster now showed a confident smirk at Archer. Soon, Ritsuka heard Caster’s voice in his head. “Look away, kid!”

The raven-haired gave a brief confused expression at Caster before shouting and turning his head away. “Everyone, close your eyes now!”

“U-Understood, Ritsuka!” Ritsuko replied with confusion mixed in her tone while closing her eyes.

Mash nodded and shut her eyes too while Olga Marie closed her eyes and lifted her hands to shield away whatever that’s coming in front.

Noticed at the sudden awkward movement before him, Archer shot a wary expression before realization dawned upon him. With the smirk remained, Caster shouted while his staff traced the ground behind him in a crescent formation. “Here we go, grand-scale! Ath nGabla!”

With a loud tapping from his hand that slammed the ground, three runes appeared behind him and glowed in a brilliant bluish light. Multiple magical circles appeared on the ground in front of him and the sides around him and Archer.

With a sword manifested, Archer slashed away the tree roots and leaped up to escape. But, he got knocked down to the ground with a powerful impact by the rune above in the air behind him.

Another painful groan emitted from his lips, Archer slowly pulled up and threw an accusing expression at Caster. “You put Runes in the air!”

“Yeah, my mentor had a spell that summoned the Gate of the Underworld. I ripped her off, basically. It won’t do any good to shoot each other at long-distance,” Caster twirled his staff and maintained in a position like holding a spear and declared. “From here, let’s go all out and do our usual fight between you and me!”

“From a Caster class?” A pair of black and white swords manifested in Archer’s hands and he smirked back at him. “Maybe you’ve become smarter than usual.”

“Heh!” Shot a grin back at Archer, Caster charged forward as Archer raised his sword readied. Once in front, Caster retorted before swinging his staff high. “One’s cleverness and tastes are two different things!”

Archer swung one of his swords forward to block. The other raised and whirled towards Caster. Caster tilted his head aside but the sharp blade of the sword slashed across his face with a small laceration.

Letting out an irritated grunt, Caster shouted. “Tch! Eihwaz!”

The wooden staff set aflame by his command. Archer jumped out of the hole at once before Caster swung the burning staff at him. The blue-haired leaped out too and his staff at Archer.

Moved his arm to swing and deflect the blazing staff, Archer grunted from the scorching pain he got on his arm when the Caster moved his staff. In revenge, the Archer knocked the staff away and swung his blade down.

Another bleeding cut made on Caster’s face, earning an irritated growl from him. Burning flames from the staff and sparks from the blades exchanged against each other. Burnt marks and cut wounds appeared as the further they waved their weapons.

“Anything about that Archer?” Ritsuko turned her eyes aside from them to her brother.

Ritsuka among the four had his mind focused a while on the projected holographic screen. He shook his head while his blue orbs moving left to right at the data he’s reading. “Definitely nothing about that guy, Ritsuko. There’s nothing about an Archer who could dual-wield and use a bow too.”

“E-Eh?! Then, what is he?!” Ritsuko gasped.

“Who knows, But…” Ritsuka replied off-handedly while his hand motioning to scroll through the data.

Ritsuko gulped with her eyebrows furrowed, “Caster is still hanging on. That Archer too even when they are about the same state as each other…”

Turned her view to the front, Caster swung his blazing staff quickly and smacked the black sword away into the air. The enemy Servant looked at his empty hand and grunted, “Tch!”

He turned his head high and saw Caster leaped up into the air and whirled his staff down. The impact from the swing produced a puff of smoke that absorbed them into it. It soon blew off revealing Archer using his remaining weapon to intercept.

Ritsuka had darted up to view before shifting back to the screen and murmured to himself. “There should be something else for the Noble Phantasm other than protecting when it hits us…”

Nevertheless, his blue orbs widened as Caster’s earlier words evoked in his mind. “Without your shield, I won’t have the time to cast my spells.”

An idea brightened up his mind as he scrolled back and paused a certain part of the information. “Unless–!”

“Game over. I think you’ve gotten rusty,” Caster taunted, pressing his staff down against the blade.

Archer narrowed his orbs and quipped with a smirk. “You’ve come this far, and you’re worried about someone else.”

Followed his gray orbs, Caster’s red orbs glanced behind and recognized the white sword he knocked away spinning in the air towards them. As it zoomed towards them like a boomerang, into a glowing blue energy.

Ritsuko followed and whirled around to spot the sword. “Director!”

“Kya!” Olga Marie turned and dashed from the spot she stood.

Ritsuka had realized it too and ordered, “Mash, deploy your Noble Phantasm now!

Ritsuko stared at her brother in disbelief. “But, isn’t it–!”

“True Name, Pseudo Register. I can do this!” Mash nodded and rushed to the spot Olga Marie stood.

Though as Caster turned around ready to deflect the energy bolt, he didn’t look the growing smirk on Archer’s lips. Mash raised her shield high in the air and recited, “Deploying Noble Phantasm! Lord Chaldeas!”

With a powerful slam onto the ground, a white magic circle constructed in the air above with green light showering to them and Caster. The blue bolt clashed with the magic circle and the power surrounding sword disappeared after it swerved away.

Ritsuka stared the white magic circle faded away and sighed in relief. “What a way to verify this analyzed data of her Noble Phantasm…”

Olga Marie rose and scowled at Ritsuka. “Hey, you wasted Mash’s mana for a small attack like this!”

“Hold on Director! I have a good reason to do so–!”

Before Ritsuka could explain finished, Archer’s smug voice stopped them. “It looks like this is the end.”

Swung their attention to Ritsuka’s back, Archer now holding Caster with one blade pointing at his neck and the other at his gut from behind. The earlier diversion of the sword had Archer retrieved back into his hand. Ritsuka’s blue orbs widened and exclaimed, “Caster!”

“So, It’s a trap after all!” Ritsuko glared at the Archer along with Mash who shared the same wary gaze at the enemy Servant.

“Hmph,” Caster, but, offered an unconcerned expression and stared at Mash’s shield. “What do you think? Will that shield resist the sword? Or will that sword pierce the shield?”

Puzzled expressions shot at Caster while Archer hummed for a minute before responding. “A long time ago, I heard something like that.”

“Yeah? And, what was the answer?” Caster asked.

Archer replied without a beat, “The answer was ‘a paradox.’

“Only a contradiction is produced.”

Caster snorted and snickered, “Hah, I don’t know about that. I always think the same thing about that story. If both things are equal, then isn’t it all down to the skill of those wielding them? Or let me put it another way.

“If you’re losing because of the weapon’s performance,” Lifted one of his hand up with a piece of rock, Caster continued. “Then it’s humans that compensate with wisdom, yes?”

He flipped the rock into Archer’s view and it exploded into an intense light before detonating. Olga Marie noticed and shouted accusingly. “Hey, that’s one of mine!”

Caster elbowed into Archer’s rib cage as the latter being paralyzed by the bright light and released himself. But, before he could move further, the noise of stabbing rang in everybody’s ears. Despite being blinded, Archer went to stab both his swords into Caster’s back.

“Caster!” Ritsuko’s shocked voice yelled as Mash and Olga Marie gasped at the sight before them.

Ritsuka paled and inhaled in fear while Archer produced a triumphant smirk to the predicted outcome. But instead, Caster’s proud voice spoke instead. “You did a good job, kid. Witty of you to draw the young lady’s Noble Phantasm out.”

“Huh?” Before he realized it, Archer found both of his arms entangled by the tree root growing out from Caster’s back. Struggled to tear away, his movement gave him to catch a familiar magic circle glowing in the green light. “That’s from the Servant’s Noble Phantasm earlier…!”

The memory of the earlier unleashed of Mash’s Noble Phantasm dawned upon him. Despite his sword thrust inwards, the green magic circle prevented it from plunging into the body. The body of Caster turned to a wooden statue, and he emerged out completely unharmed.

Caster leaped aside and proclaimed with a loud snarl. “Don’t underestimate the Sage of the Forest!”

As the Caster wooden statue transformed into an intense light, Archer pulled his arm with all his energy and leaped away before it exploded. He touched down on a safe spot and studied his surroundings for that blue-haired Servant.

“Sorry. This is all new to me,” Caster landed on a tree branch behind Archer. As the white-haired Servant turned around, Caster twirled and pointed his staff as it glowed crimson.

A flame circle ignited and encircled Archer and a familiar large wooden hand that the four recognized grabbed hold of Archer into its grip. While it soared high from the flaming circle, Archer tried to move his arms to break open the wooden hand. “Guuh!”

The wooden hand then slammed onto the ground with an enormous puff of smoke as it diffuses away. It dissolved in golden light revealed critically wounded Archer on the ground.

The white-haired Servant shot a glare at Caster who tossed the Olga Marie’s pieces of rock in his hand. “I guess it’s better than nothing at all.”

As he scoffed weakly, Archer glanced over at Ritsuka and congratulated with a proud grin. “Well done, Mages of Flowers’s Apprentice-Master! Who knew her Noble Phantasm could be used that way!”

Ritsuko expressed a bewildered look and shot to her brother. “Mages of Flower?”

“I’m just as confused as you, sis,” Ritsuka rubbed his chin to contemplate.

As Archer disappeared in golden light, Caster yelled at him. “Hey, it’s time for you to take a hike! The young lady and I will take down the Sacred Sword!”

Once Archer disappeared, Mash heaved a sigh of satisfaction and shifted to Caster. “I’m glad you trust me, but do you think I can guard against it?”

Her brows furrowed and the violet-haired Servant continued, “I’ve heard about the Sword of King Arthur. My fingers are trembling, it seems too much for me…”

“Well, you’ll just have to overcome it with courage,” Caster answered in a forthright tone. He turned to Mash and reassured her. “But from where I stand, you seem to be perfect for the job.

“That shield will never shatter, if you were to lose, it would be because the young lady messed it up. If you let go of that shield, your two Masters behind it will evaporate instantly. Listen, don’t think about beating the Sword. All you need to think about is to protect your Master. That’s right up your alley, no?”

From her nod, the Caster showed a pleasant grin to her. “Well, anyway. Leave it to me to finish off Saber and just do what you need to do.”

A period of silence later, Mash finally nodded and smiled back, “Right. That advice will be great of help.”

Olga Marie’s body lax as she breathed a sigh, “Before we do that, let’s rest up ahead. I’m tired. And, I’d like you to return what was mine!”

“Right,” Mash nodded and followed Caster whom ignored the annoyed Director going after him.

As Ritsuko followed too, Ritsuka followed behind as well while pondering. “Mages of Flowers… I didn’t become no one’s apprentice. Wait, unless it’s that guy–!”

But as he picked another step forward, a giddy spell strike him and caused him nearly tripped over nothing. Ritsuko spun around to see what had happened, but Ritsuka quickly reassured. “I’m okay, just trip over a rock.”

Watched her sister nodded at him, she turned back and proceeded walking. Ritsuka looked at his Command Seal and assumed to himself. “There’s nobody other than him who offered that role, to begin with. But, only one way to find out his identity and confirm is to hear it from King Arthur himself.”

With another deep breath, he continued walking again before picking up his pace to catch up with them.

OP correctly cited the applicable law, but it appears they did not actually read it or do not comprehend it.

(a)In General.—Any person who, in a circumstance described in subsection (d), knowingly produces, distributes, receives, or possesses with intent to distribute, a visual depiction of any kind, including a drawing, cartoon, sculpture, or painting, that—

(1)

(A) depicts a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct; and

(B) is obscene; or

(2)

(A) depicts an image that is, or appears to be, of a minor engaging in graphic bestiality, sadistic or masochistic abuse, or sexual intercourse, including genital-genital, oral-genital, anal-genital, or oral-anal, whether between persons of the same or opposite sex; and

(B) lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value; or attempts or conspires to do so, shall be subject to the penalties provided in section 2252A(b)(1), including the penalties provided for cases involving a prior conviction.

(the definition of obscenity includes lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value, so the law is doubly clear - in order for a work of art/fiction to be illegal it has to lack literary/artistic value).

This is in contrast to laws banning child pornography. Child Pornography is always illegal because in order to produce it a crime must be committed (a child must be sexually abused) and the market for it creates a demand which provides economic incentive to abuse children/sell children. That is why even receipt or possession of child pornography is a serious crime. If there is demand for child pornography (people who want it/seek it/get it) then there is incentive to create more of it and that incentive means more children will be sexually abused, raped and sold. Often child sex trafficking begins with child pornography.

In the United States, fictional works are protected by the 1st Amendment. No one is harmed in order to produce works of fiction. The demand for fiction does not provide economic incentive to harm anyone.

However, the 1st Amendment does not protect works deemed to be obscene. Any work can be found to be obscene if it meets the definition of obscenity (or if a person charged with obscenity pleads guilty rather than defend their rights).

Fiction that features sexual depictions of minors are not considered obscene simply because they sexually depict minors. The standard of obscenity is not ‘this is gross’ or ‘I don’t like the idea of this’.

The Supreme Court held that such speech has “serious redeeming value” and noted that “the visual depiction of an idea-that of teenagers engaging in sexual activity-that is a fact of modern society and has been a theme in art and literature for centuries.”

In order for a work to be obscene it has to fall under the Miller Test. More from the Supreme Court on the subject of fiction:

“Both themes-teenage sexual activity and the sexual abuse of children-have inspired countless literary works. William Shakespeare created the most famous pair of teenage lovers, one of whom is just 13 years of age. See Romeo and Juliet, act I, sc. 2, 1. 9 ("She hath not seen the change of fourteen years"). In the drama, Shakespeare portrays the relationship as something splendid and innocent, but not juvenile. The work has inspired no less than 40 motion pictures, some of which suggest that the teenagers consummated their relationship. E. g., Romeo and Juliet (B. Luhrmann director, 1996). Shakespeare may not have written sexually explicit scenes for the Elizabethan audience, but were modern directors to adopt a less conventional approach, that fact alone would not compel the conclusion that the work was obscene.

Contemporary movies pursue similar themes. Last year's Academy Awards featured the movie, Traffic, which was nominated for Best Picture. See Predictable and Less So, the Academy Award Contenders, N. Y. Times, Feb. 14, 2001, p. Ell. The film portrays a teenager, identified as a 16year-old, who becomes addicted to drugs. The viewer sees the degradation of her addiction, which in the end leads her to a filthy room to trade sex for drugs.

The year before, American Beauty won the Academy Award for Best Picture. See "American Beauty" Tops the Oscars, N. Y. Times, Mar. 27, 2000, p. El. In the course of the movie, a teenage girl engages in sexual relations with her teenage boyfriend, and another yields herself to the gratification of a middle-aged man. The film also contains a scene where, although the movie audience understands the act is not taking place, one character believes he is watching a teenage boy performing a sexual act on an older man.

Our society, like other cultures, has empathy and enduring fascination with the lives and destinies of the young. Art and literature express the vital interest we all have in the formative years we ourselves once knew, when wounds can be so grievous, disappointment so profound, and mistaken choices so tragic, but when moral acts and self-fulfillment are still in reach.”

Art/fiction can depict minors in sexual situation and not be obscene, if there is artistic value to the work as a whole.

“The artistic merit of a work does not depend on the presence of a single explicit scene. See Book Named "John Cleland's Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure" v. Attorney General of Mass., 383 U. S. 413, 419 (1966) (plurality opinion) ("[T]he social value of the book can neither be weighed against nor canceled by its prurient appeal or patent offensiveness"). Under Miller, the First Amendment requires that redeeming value be judged by considering the work as a whole. Where the scene is part of the narrative, the work itself does not for this reason become obscene, even though the scene in isolation might be offensive. See Kois v. Wisconsin, 408 U. S. 229, 231 (1972) (per 249 Curiam}.”

So unless the work is obscene per the Miller test/ lacks the artistic and literary value when taken as whole, then it’s protected speech. (See Ashcroft vs Free Speech Colilition https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/535/234/#tab-opinion-1961047).

Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) Special Edition guidebook transcript, including Ed’s decoded notes

What it says on the label. The Blu-Ray special edition of FMA 03 came with a ton of cool shit, including a hardcover artbook with the character profiles originally from the DVD booklets as well as some other, “handwritten” notes from Edward. Since I know not a lot of fans got their hands on this set, I promised a WHILE ago that I would transcribe it! Someday I’ll have scans, but I don’t have access to a scanner atm.

I’ll be listing the character notes by 3 categories: Profile Text, Edward’s Notes, and Edward’s Coded Notes.

Profile Text- the brief character blurbs that were already published in the DVD guidebooks that came out in Funimation’s original localization. Most recurring characters got one.

Edward’s Notes- The book’s title page indicates that it was issued by the Amestrian State Military, and that it belongs to Ed. Little handwritten notes, presumably from Ed, are scattered throughout the character profiles. Some are silly, some are... very not silly.

Edward’s Coded Notes- Some of Ed’s notes are written in a very simple code that replaces the English characters with symbols. It’s straightforward enough that I was able to break it in about an hour - I posted a key over here.

Not included in this text are the image captions associated with the characters’ model drawings, since they don’t make any sense without context. Stuff like “Al age 7, Ed age 8.” There are also many artist notes in Japanese, and I am anything but a Japanese speaker, so no luck there.

Fair warning, there are Royed, Royai, and if you squint, Edvy jokes in the coded text. I’m just writing what’s in the book.

Full transcript behind the cut!

THE TITLE PAGE indicates that the book is military-issued, and Edward has signed his full name on it. The following page is printed with a torn page from a smaller, obviously older book. In ornate letters, it reads the verse that was written in part in the Transmutation Circle the boys tried to use to bring back Trisha:

Pale and black with false citrine, imperfect white and red, The Peacock's feathers in gay colours, the rainbow which shall go over, The spotted panther, the lion green, the Crows bill blue as lead. These shall appear before you perfect white, and many more others. And after the perfect white, grey, false citrine also, And after these, there shall appear the red body invariable, Then you have a medicine of the third order of his own kind multipliable.

Edward’s Coded Notes: Written into the margins of the “original” military book, “Sir George Ripley,” with an arrow pointing to the pressed page. Along the side margin, he’s written “thhe* recapitulation of thhe* twelve gates.”

Explanation: Sir George Ripley is a famous British alchemist whose verse appears on this page. The full transcript of the poem Edward pasted in his book can be found here! It is also, notably, the incantation recited by Eckhart in Conqueror of Shamballa when she sought to open the Gate using Envy.

*Two people seem to have worked on the coded notes, one on the title and transmutation circle pages and the other on the character pages. The handwriting is a bit different, and the title+circle pages are noticeably sloppier than the character pages as far as adhering to the cipher goes. The symbol used for TH in the character pages is used only for a T which is followed by an H on the title pages. In the character pages the standalone H character is absent when the TH character is used, so the inconsistency makes for an obviously unintentional duplicate on the title page.

Edward’s Notes: There are twelve tally marks in the margin of this page, as well as some scribbled equations that are difficult to make out. Ed has awful handwriting.

EDWARD ELRIC

Profile Text: Edward Elric is the Fullmetal Alchemist. He is a prodigy, becoming the youngest State Alchemist in the Army’s history. Edward stunned his superiors by using alchemy without an array, a miraculous feat never witnessed before. Ed despises being a “dog of the military,” but it grants him the opportunity to seek out the legendary Philosopher’s Stone, a crimson crystal rumored to increase the power of the alchemist who uses it.

Edward seeks the stone so that he may restore his missing limbs, and more importantly reunite his younger brother Alphonse’s body with his soul, which was tragically trapped in a suit of armor after a failed attempt through alchemy to revive the dead Trisha Elric, the boys’ mother. Edward realizes he has a gift, a gift that most State Alchemists could only dream of having. But he knows that with that gift he becomes a high profile target.

As Edward reluctantly fights off a crazed assassin who vows revenge on all State Alchemists, Edward begins to unravel the clues that reveal not all is as it seems at the highest levels of the State Military. And, that there is a terrible secret behind the precious Philosopher’s Stone.

ALPHONSE ELRIC

Profile Text: Alphonse Elric was but an innocent young child when a tragic chain of events changed his life forever. First, his father mysteriously vanished while Al was too young to remember. Then, after battling terrible illness, Al’s mother succumbed to death. Finally, during a horrific accident performing forbidden alchemy, Al’s soul was sealed inside a suit of armor.

Undaunted and unashamed by all that has happened in his short life, Al carries on, eternally supporting his older brother, Edward, in his search for the Philosopher’s Stone, a legendary gem with the power to restore Al’s body and Edward’s lost limbs. Al knows that he and his brother’s actions were wrong. He only wishes for a chance to make things right.

Edward’s Notes: In smudged, barely-legible pencil, “Brother, don’t sell me short!” (thank u @gryphcat cross-referencing your own book to confirm that it does NOT say “Brother, don’t call me short!”)

Also notable is the circled “???” with an arrow pointing to that adorable picture of young Al enthusiastically ripping off his shirt.

Edward’s Coded Notes: FYI, there isn’t anything under the loincloth, [indecipherable*]!

*I think the letters were flubbed a bit, here. The characters read “[y/i]n[u/v][f/p]er[u/v]s.” I get the feeling it was supposed to say “Impervious!” buuuut someone messed up.

HOHENHEIM ELRIC

Profile Text: Supposedly lost to the ages, Hohenheim Elric, the father of the brothers Elric was close at hand after all, lurking in the shadows of history as the momentum of the search for the Philosopher’s Stone reached fever pitch. Hohenheim reappears in Resembool allowing the final pieces of this mad puzzle to begin falling into place, as he bears the secrets of the Philosopher’s Stone in his weary heart... A heart beaten down by lost love, a heart full of loyalty to his boys*. Destiny has delivered Hohenheim to a crucial point, a spot in time when all that is good prepares to unravel. Perhaps he will be strong enough to move forward and rise above his shady pas, nad push his shoulder against the wheel of fate that threatens to crush all he ever cared for.

*We watched two very different series, apparently

Profile Text: Roy Mustang is the Flame Alchemist and a veteran of many brutal battles. He personally knew Edward and Alphonse’s father, which sparked his curiosity once he discovered that Hohenheim’s sons were dabbling in alchemical arts. Mustang is eager to climb the ladder of success and hopes that discovering the immense talent within Edward helps him ascend the ranks. Still, Mustang’s soldiers are the most loyal in all of the State Army, insinuating that there is more to this man than his thirst for power.

*Most likely a reference to an old convention gag. Back when FMA was big enough that it had dedicated cast panels, fans would almost always ask Vic Mignogna to say this line.

RIZA HAWKEYE

Profile Text: Riza Hawkeye is quite possibly the most perfect model of a soldier in the State Army. Although Hawkeye is Roy Mustang’s subordinate, she is also his right hand woman, acting as an advisor and, based on the circumstance, devil’s advocate. Her no-nonsense attitude demands respect from everyone she meets, military and civilian alike. She is cool, calm, and collected, and exceptionally skilled in the use of firearms.

MAES HUGHES

Profile Text: Maes Hughes is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Investigations Division of the State Army. Hughes is obsessively in love with his wife Gracia, and only child Elicia, who from birth shares a strange connection with Ed and Al. Hughes is friendly and extremely casual, sometimes to a fault. He can quickly lapse back and forth between discussing State matters and going on and on about his family. As a high-ranking official in the Investigations Division, Hughes is privy to plenty of top-secret info, which he shares with Ed on the sly. When Hughes is nudged into physical combat, his weapons of choice are small throwing knives, which he wields with incredible and deadly accuracy.

ALEX LOUIS ARMSTRONG

Profile Text: Major Alex Louis Armstrong was given strict orders from Mustang to protect Ed. But, don’t let his civilian clothes fool you. With his strapping build and gutsy bravado, this Strong Arm Alchemist will give his life to ensure he completes his mission successfully. If on thing’s for certain, Armstrong will make sure that Ed’s within arm’s protection.

This straight and narrow man won’t even give Ed as much as a loss in an argument. He’d rather use his genteel decorum to kill improper manners with his heroic kindness. Even during their down time in Resembool, there’s not a moment to lose. Armstrong is committed to his life as a soldier, and knows daily training is essential - even if that means cutting firewood with his bare hands.

JEAN HAVOC, HEYMANS BREDA, VATO FALMAN, KAIN FUERY

Profile Text: In a world where loyalties change with the tides, good subordinates are a premium. Roy Mustang has this luxury with Havoc, Breda, Falman, and Fuery. These four loyal officers will do anything their commander requests of them and do it well, to boot. However, these four couldn’t be more different. Havoc is the tragic playboy of the group, always wishing he had that special someone to share the rest of his days. Breda may be called a “dog of the military” from time to time, but Breda would rather stare down an entire army than get anywhere near a real dog. Falman is overly formal, causing some of his comrades to wish he would lighten up. Fuery is the soft-spoken technical wizard under Mustang’s command. He isn’t used to much hand-to-hand combat, but is handy enough in a pinch. As with all of Mustang’s men, these four would follow him until death.

DENNY BLOCH AND MARIA ROSS

Profile Text: Abrasive in demeanor, Lieutenant Maria Ross is always determined to do the right thing. Sometimes, she has trouble distinguishing between her actual duties and the chance to deliver a lecture. Sergeant Denny Bloch, along with Lieutenant Ross, was given the responsibility to keep the Fullmetal Alchemist under close supervision. Regardless, they fall behind when danger approaches.

IZUMI CURTIS

Profile Text: The stern Izumi Curtis is more than just an alchemy teacher to the Elric brothers. As the passionate matriarch of a two-person family, Ed and Al may be the closest thing she’ll ever have to children. Resurfacing after hearing rumors about her former pupils, it is quite possible Izumi may know more than she lets on about the true nature of alchemy and the sinister homunculi.

His lust for war and his hunt for the infamous Scar may cloud his vision, however, as he potentially confuses sacrifice for suicide.

Profile Text: Shou Tucker earned the title Sewing Life Alchemist thanks in large part to his masterful work creating Chimeras for the State. In fact, Tucker was the first alchemist to produce a Chimera capable of speaking and understanding the human language. Tucker is a man with incredible brilliance and immense talent. The irony is that he can create life, but that his own is being controlled is not lost upon Shou Tucker. With his execution staged by the Military, Tucker has spent all of his time devoted to research and experimentation, with one purpose in mind: bring back the daughter he once readily destroyed.

Edward’s Notes: Because we’re not Gods, we’re humans, tiny insignificant humans. Who couldn’t even save a little girl...

SCAR

Profile Text: Like Ed, Scar is able to use alchemy without a transmutation circle. Scar both hates and embraces his “curse.” He has a special grudge against State Alchemists because of past atrocities towards his homeland of Ishbal. The Ishbal Massacre was a vicious military offensive against Ishbal due to conflicting doctrines because the citizens would not put aside their traditional beliefs and embrace alchemy. Scar believes his god has instilled in him the right to kill State Alchemists at will for what they have done to his people. He truly believes his cause is righteous, no matter what it takes.

LUST

Profile Text: The beautiful homunculus Lust desires to become human through the massive power of the Philosopher’s Stone. She dreams of finally finding out who she really is inside, and to discover what will happen to her after death. These are all very human traits for a being that supposedly has no soul. Lust uses any means necessary to traverse the dilemmas of her existential crisis... She is able to corrupt the minds of the weak, forcing them to follow her every whim. Like Scar and Ed, the gorgeous and sad Lust is traveling down the same whirlpool of misery and darkness that sucks away all who quest for the Philosopher’s Stone.

GLUTTONY

Profile Text: Loyal homunculus companion to Lust, Gluttony, eater of anything, might be the saddest example of the cruel nature of the hunt for the Philosopher’s Stone. Simple and savage, Gluttony operates at once like a child and an animal, a creature of pure instant satisfaction. He simply knows one thing: Hunger. Not for power of prestige, but only to satisfy his reason to be... this only adds to the wretchedness of his tragic existence.

ENVY

Profile Text: Envy is one of the homunculi, a group of pseudo-humans whose creation is still an enigma. Some say they were created in a lab. Others believe they’ve always been among us. But no matter where they came from, their intention are nothing but evil. Envy has the ability to become a perfect physical replica of whomever he or she desires. Envy is without gender. In fact, Envy’s mind is so far gone that he or she can’t remember who he or she used to be. Envy’s power is truly amazing.

The shape-shifting homunculi Envy could be anyone, utilizing the ability to take on the physical appearance of any being at will. Envy will morph into a stranger behind you in a smokey cafe, or the trusted ally that works with you to uncover corruption and twisted abuses of power, or even your loving spouse. And beneath the familiar surface pure evil waits. Never turn your back on Envy. Even after you’ve slit the creature’s throat.

Headed for a brutal showdown, Ed will test the homunculus’ reputation as the Ultimate Shield. In return, Greed will test every notion Ed ever held to be true and real.

While cursing them for her fate, Sloth’s seemingly maternal memories and longings may provide the homunculus with her downfall... nothing in the universe is more resilient than a mother’s love. Something stirs in Sloth, where a soul once rested.

Timid at first, Wrath’s demeanor soon shifts as layer upon layer of intrigue is peeled away, uncovering a core of supernatural madness. Able to perform alchemy, at times even in ways that Fullmetal himself doesn’t understand, it becomes clear that Wrath is a monster. His connection to Ed and Al’s teacher could provide answers to questions that are too shocking to ask.* Suspicious of the boy, Ed will give an arm and a leg to uncover the truth about the wild child.

KING BRADLEY (PRIDE)

Profile Text: The Fuhrer King Bradley commands both the State Government and the State Army making him seemingly the most powerful man in the entire world. Known as one of the most cunning and vicious warriors in history, the homunculus Pride, the Fuhrer himself, has orchestrated countless bloody conflicts in his search for the Philosopher’s Stone. Calm, cool, collected and created by Dante... Bradley moves his pieces into striking range. Is it possible, though, that the Ultimate Eye is blind to his own role as a pawn in someone else’s sinister plot?

DANTE

Profile Text: Dante’s actions, her attempts to control the uncontrollable and manipulate innocence, have carried her through the centuries with a singular goal... immortality. At times seemingly aligned with the powers of good, while dipping her toes into the red pool of evil, Dante’s path has been one clouded by murky intentions. At the end of the quest for the Philosopher’s Stone, as all of the players look up past the strings that carried them through this desperate dance, whose face will they see?

After the character pages, there are four pages of alchemic arrays. The writing here gets really vague, as all of it is written in Ed’s code and there are many mistakes.

The Thule Society’s array has a four letter word with an exclamation point that begins with NA, followed by the character for X and a sloppy character that is probably I/Y but looks more like a J. There are no other instances of a Z to confirm, but I think X and Z may be the same character, and it was intended to say “NAZI!”

Majahal’s array is noted with I wonder what happened to Lebi? This probably refers to Carin, Lebi being the name she took on after forgetting her past. This, too, is a bit confusing because the I/Y character also looks like a J.

Harvest Moon AU - Zen Heart Events

Black Heart Event

Time: 12PM-6PM; Any season but Winter

Weather: Sunny

Location: Aurora Lake

[You walk into the bottom section of Aurora Lake, which lies south of the Moonlight Mine. Zen frequently can be found practicing the guitar by the lake’s shores, and you walks in on him doing so. He does not notice you at first, and you watch him practice while musical notes appear above his head.]

Zen: They think I’m crazy. ♪ My heartbeat goes up. ♫

Zen: Words cannot express my love for you! ♫♪

Zen: Did you – ack!

[An exclamation point appears above Zen’s head, and he stops playing as he notices you.]

Zen: <MC>, I didn’t see you out there! How long have you been listening?

Zen: …A while, huh? Well, I understand. It’s hard to ignore my alluring presence!

Zen: What brings you this far out of town?

> [Choice 1] “It’s beautiful out. I wanted to take a walk.”

Zen: Ahh, isn’t it, though? The sound of the wind, the song of the birds, the smell of the flowers drifting on the breeze…

Zen: It’s enough to make a man feel alive, isn’t it?

Zen: Whenever I visit to the lake, I remember why I moved to Mystic Valley in the first place. The fresh air has a way of making my soul feel… clean.

Zen: I always come out here to practice. Would you like to listen for a while? I’ll play you something a bit more polished.

[You nod and walk over to sit by Zen. Go to [A]

> [Choice 2] “I wanted to see you, my darling Zenny-zen♥”

(Zen blushes)

Zen: Hahaha, wow! Are you a fan?

Zen: Jeez, I’m so lucky… someone as cute as you was looking for me?

Zen: Well, come on over. I’ll play you something a bit more polished.

[You nod and walk over to sit by Zen. Go to [A]

> [Choice 3] “I was headed to the mine, when I heard you playing…”

Zen: I guess you’d have to pass me if you wanted to get there, huh?

Zen: I’m surprised you go in there… but I guess there’s stuff you need in the dirt. Ores for your tools, minerals to sell…

Zen: It’s filled with monsters though, right? I hope you’re careful.

Zen: I’d hate to see someone as cute as you end up in the clinic.

Zen: How about you take a break and listen to me for a while? I’ll play you something a bit more polished.

Zen: Back-breaking labor can wait a few minutes, right?

[Zen plays another song, musical notes appearing above his head as he strums. When he’s finished, he looks to you.]

Zen: That’s one of the first songs I learned how to play. What do you think?

Zen: The road to stardom isn’t an easy one, and I’d be lying if I said it never got rough, but…

Zen: It’s a small price to pay for your dreams, huh?

Zen: I figure you’d understand, given that you took over that old farm-plot and all. It can’t be easy, and it also can’t have been a popular decision among your friends and family.

Zen: I mean, who decides to drop society and run off to become a farmer, anyway?

Zen: --Ah, sorry! Don’t take that the wrong way. I meant it as a compliment.

Zen: My family… wanted me to be plain. Dull. Boring. To just follow along with the crowd, and to be exactly like everyone else.

Zen: I know what you’re thinking! With a face like mine, how could I be destined for anything but show business?

Zen: …But, to them, what was most important... was being normal.

Zen: So anyone who forges their own path and carves their own destiny like you... well! I think that’s a pretty admirable person.

Zen: Anyway, sorry for keeping you. I’m sure you’re busy.

Zen: Come see me any time, okay? ♥ I’m always happy to have an audience.

[You walk into the scene to find Yoosung standing by the water along with Zen. They seem to be in the middle of a conversation.]

Yoosung: In the beginning, you used to come out with me every weekday after practice! Then, it started being every other weekday…

Yoosung: And now that Rika’s gone? You never help me with the Community Center! If I didn’t know better, Zen, I’d say you didn’t care anymore.

Yoosung: But that can’t be true, right?

Yoosung: Of everyone in this town…

Yoosung: You’re the person… who still dreams the most about the day when everything is finished and you finally have an auditorium to perform in.

Zen: That’s true, but…

Yoosung: But what? But you’d rather not get your hands dirty and instead let me do all the work?

Yoosung: Is that it?

Zen: No!

Zen: Yoosung, do I seem like a lazy guy to you? It’s not that at all!

Zen: It’s just…

Zen: V already… told us to stop working on it. And he has the deed - without his approval and that damn cat-mayor’s permission, we can’t even think about opening the building!

Zen: Yoosung, I want a stage more than I want to keep breathing.

Zen: But we can’t do anything until we convince the two of them! Otherwise –

Yoosung: I thought you liked breaking the rules!

Yoosung: Liked flouting authority, liked proving that everyone else’s opinions didn’t matter! When did a stupid piece of paper start scaring you?

Yoosung: How are you going to get famous if you don’t have a stage to play on?!

Zen: …

[The two of them finally notice you, and sweat-drops appear before both of their heads.]

Zen: <MC!> God, you really have a habit of walking in on things, huh?

Yoosung: U-uh, hi, <MC!>

Yoosung: I’m sorry, Zen and I were just… talking about the old community center…

Yoosung: You know, that big old ruined building a bit north of the bakery?

Yoosung: Back in the day, Rika, V, Zen and I used to have all of these plans of fixing it up and using it to hold town-wide events like classes, art-shows, and, y’know, plays…

Yoosung: Things that might encourage more people to live here and help the townsfolk connect with each other…

Yoosung: But all progress has stopped, and the woodwork has been left to rot.

> [Choice 1] “Do you want help fixing it?”

(Zen +500)

[An exclamation point appears over Yoosung’s head.]

Yoosung: What, really? Is that a serious offer?

Yoosung: Yes, absolutely! It honestly gets really, really, really depressing working on it all by myself!

Yoosung: …So depressing that I sometimes skip out on it and play video games instead…

Yoosung: Come on! I’ve hauled the tools up there already, and I brought a cooler full of soda, too!

Zen: W-Wait!

[Question marks appear above Yoosung and your head.]

Zen: Er, well, I guess I can take a break from practice, too…

Zen: Let’s go buy a pack of beer, though. You can’t drink soda when you’re doing construction work!

Zen: That’s just lame.

Yoosung: That… kinda doesn’t sound safe?

Zen: Oh, come on, it’ll be fine. It makes things more fun!

[You walk off screen with Zen and Yoosung. The screen goes dark, and when it comes back, the clock has been set to 6PM and you’re outside the community center with Zen and Yoosung. You can control your character now, but if you talk to them before leaving, you get some unique dialogue.]

Zen: Don’t worry, I’ll get him home. Jeez, he really can’t take his booze, huh?

Yoosung: Zen, your hair is so pretty and your skin is so soooooft… I want to wear it…

> [Choice 2] “You should probably just let it collapse. It’s kind of ugly.”

(Zen -500)

Yoosung: It’s, it’s not ugly!

Zen: It kind of is…

Yoosung: That’s only because no one will help me fix it! It’ll be like a beautiful butterfly coming out of its cocoon when it’s done… you’ll see!

[A sweat-drop appears over Zen’s head.]

Zen: Look… if it means so much to you, I can come help for a little bit.

Zen: But we have to get V to agree to the repairs. Okay? Otherwise, I’m just going to spend my time practicing.

Yoosung: You know he’s never going to agree to that…!

Zen: It’s our best shot. There’s no way the mayor will intervene; that guy doesn’t care about anything other than cats and money.

Yoosung: Sigh…

Zen: Hey, maybe one day one of your chickens will lay a golden egg and we’ll just be able to throw tons of cash at Jumin.

Yoosung: That’s geese, and I already tried that!

Zen: …What.

Yoosung: Yeah! The wizard on the hill said if I got a goose and did the macerana in front of it while balancing a melon on my head and jumping up and down, it’d lay a golden egg after a month!

Yoosung: But it didn’t work!

Yoosung: Maybe I didn’t do it right...?

Zen: S-seriously, kid…

Yoosung: Anyway, let’s go!

[Yoosung and Zen walk away, but Zen stops by you before he goes off the screen.]

Zen: Sorry <MC>, I won’t be able to play for you today.

Zen: It might be a lost cause, but Yoosung is my friend. I have to help him out occasionally or he gets pretty hard to deal with.

Blue Heart Event

Time: 6PM-11PM; Any season.

Weather: Sunny

Location: Meteor Hill Peak

[Meteor Hill is where the Wizard 707 lives – and it’s also the best stargazing spot in town! When you enter the area, the camera pans up to Zen standing by the very top of the mountain, and you walk up beside him.]

Zen: Oh, hey there, <MC>…

Zen: Sigh…

[Choice 1] “You look sad. What’s wrong?”

Zen: Sad? Hmn. I suppose I am a bit gloomy, but nothing is wrong, don’t worry!

Zen: It’d be crime against the world itself if anything bad happened to me. ♥

Zen: I was just thinking about some things, that’s all.

[go to A]

[Choice 2] “That’s not a very energetic greeting.”

Zen: Haha, sorry, you’re right.

Zen: Hey there, <MC!>

Zen: Is that better?

Zen: It’d be horrible for me to deny you my beautiful, smiling face. Though… isn’t there something tragically beautiful by a gorgeous, sad man under the stars?

[A laughing face appears over Zen’s head.]

[A]

Zen: Anyway, the sky is so clear tonight… why don’t you join me?

[You walk up and sit beside Zen, and he turns to face the sky once more.]

Zen: Looking at the sky makes you think, huh? About how small everything is, how tiny and insignificant we are compared to the stars…

Zen: Yet, we humans have managed to touch them, haven’t we? We’ve launched rockets to the moon, we’ve made telescopes that can see distant planets…

Zen: And through art and literature, we’ve managed to, as a species, achieve heights that our ancestors could only dream of.

Zen: Beautiful paintings. Music that can move you to tears. Acting that takes you into another time, another place, that’s so convincing that it makes the characters appear real.

Zen: We’ve made light of the constellations; we ourselves have become stars.

Zen: Sigh…

Zen: Do you ever think about how the people that might be watching the same sky as you? People you’ve left behind, people who might not even remember that you exist…?

[Choice 1] “I do.”

Zen: You should tell me about them sometime. I’d love to hear about the kinds of things you think about in the darkness of the night.

[Choice 2] “I don’t.”

Zen: No? That’s probably for the best. It means that you’re not chained by your own regrets, that you can face the present without looking behind you.

Zen: Myself, on the other hand…

Zen: …

Zen: I’ve left a lot of people behind over my life.

Zen: My friends. My… family.

Zen: They didn’t believe that I could amount to more than a “pretty-faced, shallow thug”, so one day, I – I got on my motorcycle and just drove. And drove. And drove until the city was behind me, and all that I could see, for miles and miles, were green, rolling fields.

Zen: I didn’t have a lot with me. I only brought my jacket, my guitar, and a small knapsack filled with some of my clothes and my wallet.

Zen: I started living simply, just playing and singing in towns. I’d buy a bit of food - whatever I could afford - with the tip money…

Zen: And then I moved on.

Zen: I don’t know what I was looking for.

Zen: I don’t know if I was even looking for something, in the end, it was more like… it came looking for me.

Zen: Have… I ever really told you about Rika?

[You shake your head.]

Zen: Well, I came to Mystic Valley on a rainy day in the summer. It was pouring, I was soaked through, and I didn’t have enough money to stay anywhere. But! It was warm, so I thought, oh, I’ll just find someplace to wait out the rain and just sleep outside.

Zen: Hehe, can you imagine that? I was kind of like the prince of the forest in those days… sleeping under the open air. It was nice, sometimes.

Zen: I mean, sometimes it wasn’t, but look on the bright side, right?

Zen: Anyway, you know how the restaurant has that great porch? Well, I took shelter under there, and since I was bored, I brought out my guitar and started playing.

Zen: After a while… someone came out and saw me there, dripping on one of the chairs and playing away without a care in the world.

Zen: It was Rika.

Zen: She was astounded. She told me my music was the most beautiful thing she’d ever heard, and she dragged me inside to introduce me to V. And V, that guy could really fret up a storm, you know? He got me a change of clothes, something warm to eat, and he also offered me a place to stay.

Zen: Free of charge. What a guy, right?

Zen: Anyway, they were both so excited. They asked me a million questions about myself – who I was, where I was from, what I was doing out here – and when I said I wanted to be in show business, Rika said…

Zen: “V! Let’s let him play here! He’ll bring in customers!”

Zen: …Those were really fun days… the restaurant was packed whenever I’d play. Everyone was laughing… I brought smiles to all their faces.

Zen: Even that damn mayor came out of his ivory palace to listen. Haha.

Zen: We’d even talk about how, when the community center was all fixed up, I’d even be able to put on plays… I could have a whole theatre-troupe, and achieve my real dream of telling a story on stage…

Zen: …

Zen: …But… that all stopped when she died.

Zen: V just… retreated into himself.

Zen: He didn’t… ask me to stop playing, really, but whenever I tried, I just remembered when Rika and V used to be there at the counter laughing, and…

Zen: After she was gone…

Zen: …

Zen: It… made me think of my parents…

Zen: And how they said everything about me was just temporary. My pretty looks, my hopes and dreams –

Zen: “Why on earth would you want to be an actor, Hyun? Even if you do make it, which you won’t, people will forget about you as soon as someone new comes along. Why not do something that’ll make a permanent difference in the world?”

Zen: And – even though I didn’t want to – when I remembered them smiling, I asked myself…

Zen: Did… I really leave anything lasting, even when people loved me?

Zen: Because in the end, those smiles disappeared.

Zen: And now, I’m nothing.

[Choice 1] “You’re not nothing!”

Zen: Haha… That’s sweet of you to say, <MC>. And it’s not really fair of me to whine to you about all this; you do keep visiting me. You are a fan. And please, believe me, I appreciate your support more than you know.

Zen: When you smile at me…

Zen: When you look at me as I’m playing…

Zen: When you visit me, day after day, and sit beside me by the lake…

Zen: I really… feel it. How much I love this place. How much I love being able to touch people with my voice.

Zen: I want to be heard, <MC>.

Zen: I want to be listened to.

Zen: I want to tell people the things they need to hear, the things that will make them smile and laugh and feel like the world is alright.

Zen: I want to be the light for those who are struggling.

Zen: I want to show them there’s something worth fighting for!

[Choice 2] “You should keep trying.”

Zen: Keep trying? I’m not… sure what I’m trying to do anymore.

Zen: What did I think would happen…? I ask myself that all the time. I feel like such a wash-out. Do I really have any actual talent? Part of the reason I wanted to be an actor was because women kept telling me that I was so beautiful I sparkled, and that I ought to be on the stage, but –

Zen: I don’t want to be looked at because I’m pretty; I wanted to be looked at because I have something to say!

Zen: Something for people to hear!

Zen: Something that, when people listen to it, makes them feel!

Zen: I want to make people happy!

Zen: I want to make people smile!

[Choice 3] “Why don’t you go back to the city?”

Zen: That’s a fair question to ask. If I want to make it big, then playing in a small town probably isn’t the best route to that, right? Abandoning this place, going back and trying my hand at the theater business…

Zen: It makes sense. But. Something about that – I just can’t do it.

Zen: Mystic Valley has its problems; but it gave me a place to call home when I couldn’t find one anywhere else. Rika, V, the entire town – they liked me because my talents brought them joy. It wasn’t shallow, it wasn’t just because of my appearance…

Zen: They heard something in my voice that they loved. Not my face; my voice.

Zen: For once, I felt like I was heard. And now? I want –

Zen: I want people to judge Mystic Valley not by appearances, but instead by its heart!

Zen: I want everyone to remember what’s so good about this place!

Zen: I want to put it into a song, put it into a story so I can convey it to them, what I feel! And to help them remember how they felt, once!

[B]

Zen: I want - !

Zen: …

[Zen stands up, and then exclaims to the sky - ]

Zen: I want everyone to feel like they can wish again!

Zen: What am I doing, sulking up here on top of a mountain? Man – what have I been doing all these months?

Zen: Playing by myself in the woods, waiting for people to stumble across me and discover me because I’m too afraid of bringing pain rather than joy with my work?

Zen: What the heck; that’s dumb!

Zen: You know what, <MC>? I’m going to march right down to the bar and tell V, straight up, that he needs to let me play there again!

Zen: We need to hold concerts there again!

Zen: Sure, something bad happened, but we can’t be sad forever!

Zen: Sure, the town is having trouble, but –

Zen: There are beautiful things out there, waiting to be seen!

Zen: Like me! Like you! Like the stars – I want everyone in this town to remember that they can be happy!

[Zen pants, and then turns back towards the path leading down the mountain.]

Zen: <MC>, thank you! I feel like I’ve been born again as a new man.

Zen: It’s gotten so dark, so please, let me walk you home. After that…

Zen: I’m going to go talk to V.

[The scene ends with a heart appearing over your head and you walking back down the path with Zen. After this, Zen’s schedule will change, and he’ll start routinely playing at the bar.]

Green Heart Event

There is no event at the green heart level, however to see the final two heart events, a token of affection must be given in the form of a ‘heart gem’ to the object of your affections. This makes the relationship ‘official’, and the rest of the town acknowledges you as dating your chosen candidate.

Zen: Is this – is this for me?

Zen: Really? Really, really – you’re giving this to me?

Zen: <MC>, I could kiss you! Can I kiss you? I really want to kiss you!

Zen: Goddess, you have no idea how many times I’ve imagined this happening. You confessing your love to me... and then me sweeping you off your feet and carrying you off to the moon!♥

Zen: Ahh, I’m happy! I’m so happy! I want to go tell everyone that <MC> likes me!

Zen: Me~♥ Me~♥! I’m the luckiest guy in the world!

Zen: <MC>, let me take you on a date today! Anywhere you want; my treat!

Zen: I’ll do anything at all for the cutest, sweetest person in the world.

[Hearts appear over the both of your heads, and the scene fades to black. When it comes back, you’re standing outside of your farmhouse, in the evening, with full energy.]

[Note: After this heart event, if you interact with the ‘journal’ in Zen’s room, it’ll be filled with love poems and sonnets.]

Yellow Heart Event

Time: 8AM-4PM; Any Season.

Weather: Any

Location: Meteor Hill

[You walk onto the screen to find Zen in front of the door to the Wizard’s house. When he hears you, he turns around and an [!] appears above his head.]

Zen: <MC!> Just the person I was hoping to see!

Zen: This has to be fate. Come on! Let’s get our fortune told together.

[You and Zen walk into the tower… Where you’re greeted emphatically by 707, whose voice resonates through the house even though you can’t see him initially.]

Seven: Ooohh!! What’s that, I hear? Is someone knocking at my door and summoning me, the magnificent wizard Seven-oh-Seven?!

Seven: Well, actually, you didn’t knock, which is awfully rude.

Seven: How about you try that again?

[Zen turns to the door, and though he doesn’t leave, he knocks on it.]

Zen: Is that better, oh Great Wizard?

Seven: Much, thank you!

[Seven suddenly appears, sliding down banister the spiral-staircase which lies in the center of the ground floor. When he lands, he poses and sparkles.]

Seven: What can I do for you, humble children of men? What great secrets can I reveal; what darkness needs to be banished with the unrelenting force of light?!

Seven: Tell me, oh noble petitioners, so I may aid you in your quest for glory!

Zen: Pffthaha… I just want the usual, Seven. Though I was hoping you could have a two-for-one special? See, I have my partner here, and…

Zen: Well…

Zen: I’d like our compatibility rated.♥

Seven: A compatibility rating? Oh joy!

Seven: And may there be joy to you both! At least, if the stars will it.

Seven: Sit down, then! And present your offerings, so I may be compensated for my just and true work.

[Zen walks up to Seven.]

Zen: Here you go, pal. Fresh from the supermarket.

Zen: I got you two packs since there are two of us.

Seven: Ah, the sweet nectar of life! The ambrosia of the gods! Liquid manna straight from heaven –

Seven: PhD Pepper!

Seven: This will do. Now, we’ll begin!

[You and Zen sit together in front of Seven’s crystal ball, and he walks on the other side, beginning to make hand gestures. The screen darkens a bit, and the blips of Seven’s dialogue get a different cadence.]

Seven: Now, let us peer into the future…

Seven: The future of you and Zen…

Seven: Abra-cadabra, alakazam, make me more than what I am, show me the heart of the golden land…

Seven: Bim-bam-boom!

Seven: . . .

Seven: The stars… have spoken…

Seven: Hyun Ryu…

Seven: <MC>…

Seven: Ah, what happiness is this…? It’s so profound, I can almost taste it.

Seven: Yours is a relationship that fills the other with love.

Seven: Stability. Support. Inspiration. You work harder for the sake of the other, and through that work, you both make the world a better place.

Seven: Wherever you go, your love will plant the seeds of new beginnings… not just for yourself, but for those around you.

Seven: Yours is a love that will touch others who view it. And it will be viewed by others!

Seven: A life of seclusion, of being a recluse… is not an option to you. And neither do you want it to be…

Seven: Because through being seen, you’ll ultimately make others happy.

[A heart appears over your head.]

Zen: Thank you, Wizard! I’m in your debt.

Seven: I can only tell you what the stars have been telling you all along. But, you are welcome!

Seven: Now go! Be free! Be happy!

Seven: And sing of your love, to anyone that’ll listen!

[You and Zen walk out, but the camera lingers on Seven for a final line before going dark.]

Seven: Heh-heh-heh… he’s going to be unbearable from now on. Oh well! That’s for the rest of the town to deal with.

Pink Heart Event

Time: 6PM-12PM

Weather: Any

Location: Señor Saguaro (V’s Restaurant)

[This heart event is preceded in the morning by you getting a letter. It’s from Zen, saying that he’s set up a special concert at V’s restaurant… and he’d like you to attend! You can walk in any time after 6, and the event will be triggered.]

[Zen is on the stage, and the camera follows your character as you walk up and take a seat at one of the tables near the front. Zen doesn’t stop playing, and finishes up the song before addressing the audience – which is pretty large. Larger than any of his performances so far.]

Zen: Thank you all for coming out here tonight. It really means a lot to see so many faces out in the crowd!

Zen: Especially those of you who are smiling and in love.♥ That’s my favorite kind of expression in the world!

Zen: …I’ll be honest, in the past, I sometimes hated looking at couples. There’ve times when I’ve been jealous of other’s happiness...

Zen: Times when I’ve been sad and confused about what to do…

Zen: And times when I’ve just wanted to give up and say, ‘you know? My dreams aren’t worth it!’ but, in the end…

Zen: There was someone beside me who told me to keep trying.

Zen: There was someone beside me who kept pushing me to succeed.

Zen: And that, my friends –

[Zen begins to play another song – which is a finished version of the one he was singing in the very first heart event - and the screen fades to black after it’s completed. When it comes back into view, you and Zen are standing outside of Señor Saguaro, and it’s very dark.]

Zen: Thanks for coming tonight. I really appreciate it.

Zen: And, uh, sorry for gushing about you in public there, I just really couldn’t help myself.

Zen: …So… I’ve, uh. I’ve been talking to some people in town.

Zen: And – uh. We petitioned Jumin…

Zen: And while he’s still saying that we don’t have the funds to make progress on the community center, he did say that he has some pretty big rooms in his manor that we could use to practice, and, well.

Zen: Maybe put some small shows in, too.

[Choice 1] “That’s exciting!”

Zen: Isn’t it? A place to work that isn’t out in the middle of the woods! It’s like a dream come true.

Zen: Jumin says he has some props we can use, too!

[go to A]

[Choice 2] “Maybe Jumin’s not totally heartless after all.”

Zen: Pft, I wouldn’t go that far, he said he’d want some of the proceeds from the show to go to the town coffers.

Zen: …Though, on second thought…

Zen: I guess… he probably would use that money to help the town, huh?

[A sweatdrop appears over Zen’s head.]

[A]

Zen: Anyway, I’d really love it if you came to some of the practices.

Zen: Maybe… you’d even want to try acting yourself?

Zen: No pressure! But… it’d mean a lot for you to be there.

Zen: I’d like you to see how far I’ve come.

[A heart appears above both your heads, and then Zen leans in and kisses you.]

Zen: …Thanks for being you, <MC>.

Zen: Shall I walk you home? I think it’d be a good way to end the night.

[Another heart appears over your head, and you and Zen walk off together.]

Marriage:

After seeing Zen’s final heart event, you can propose to him using a Prismatic Letter Opener, which is a longstanding tradition in Mystic Valley. A few things change after marrying Zen. He moves in with you, and he’ll practice on your farm instead of going out to the lake. He and Yoosung also start working on the Community Center as part of your daily routine. Zen also will write you letters that you can find on your night-stand in the evening, telling you how much he loves you and appreciates you.

After marriage, an event chain is unlocked with V and Jumin regarding the community center, and that starts the post-marriage content of fixing it up.

Hi so idk who exactly to ask but ive heard about lovelyz but idk whats worth stanning about them? Not bashing just actual wonderment cause ive never heard a song or seen a performance so idk if theyre worth my time? Ur a lovelyz blog so i was wondering if u could help me out? I just know theyre from the same company as infinigr but thats not related to their talent. Thank u :)

(This is gonna be long) Hello! They are definitely worth stanning! They’ve been known as Livelyz for their amazing, stable vocals during their live stages so people really can’t come for their vocals. Sujeong has advanced guitar skills, Baby Soul learned guitar for their fans and Mijoo and Jiae play the piano. I think almost all of them can play the piano though I don’t quite remember.

They have the innocent, girl-next-door concept that makes them seem friendly and approachable. If you’re into feel-good songs, you should check out their latest release, Now, We (they won #1 with that song), Hi~, and For You, an uplifting song dedicated to their fans. If you’re into quirky, bubblegum type of song, I recommend Ah-Choo, their most famous song (Infinite’s Hoya starred in the MV). If you like something angsty with a mature/somber sound, check out Destiny.

Other than their title tracks, Lovelyz is also famous for their good B-sides with different styles. For ballad, we have the reversal track Goodnight Like Yesterday (Infinite’s Sunggyu starred in the MV), Circle, and Bookmark. We also have an unreleased R&B, Fallin’. If you like something that sounds like a quirky anime song, there’s Aya. There’s also Night & Day (personal favorite). Cameo is a song that tells the story of a girl that’s always in the shadow. For girls that want more in a relationship, we have The. My Lover is a song that sounds kind of like a whimsical Spanish song, and you’ll love Doll if you’re into dreamy but haunting songs (the song is about being a doll in the corner of the room).

Also, being from Woollim, their concerts have always been 100% live. Live vocals + live bands.

As for their personalities, they’re very humble kids. I have personally interacted with them on three occasions (2 fansigns & 1 otw to mubank) and they were very friendly to me and all their fans. They like to joke around with them but they really care about their fans. Mijoo once cried at a fansign because she was so sorry that the fansign schedule was held back due to a delay in their previous schedule, even though it wasn’t her nor any of the girls’ fault.

In turn, their fans (called Lovelinus) joke around with the girls as well, making fun of them when they cry, uploading remix videos of Jiae saying “Come here!” which became her catchphrase... but Lovelinus are really protective of them. Lovelyz have thanked them before for always creating a barrier for them to safely walk to work/return from work and asking staff for blankets to cover the girls’ thighs whenever they’re wearing skirts or shorts.

Lovelinus may not be as big of a fandom as other rising girl groups’ but we’re calm, we promote our girls in peace without dragging other groups, and we like to stay away from drama.

Alrighty, y’all about to be in for a doozy.

Protest: Any form of ‘protest’ or ‘rebellion’ in a synopsis is going to make me want to read that book base on that alone. Some of the more famous protest books are The Hunger Game Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. My favorite one is more about protesting the system, and that is Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson.

Diversity: With all the campaigns to include more diverse language, authors, characters and plots happening in 2017, you bet this is my main ‘Ear-Perk’. I have read some many good Diverse books this year. And I really doubt it’s going to be a phase. So many genres are including these goals. For Fantasy, my favorite is Shadowshaper by Daniel Jose Older. For contemporary, I’m going with Amina’s Voice by Hena Khan. Scifi has to be Not Your Sidekick by C B Lee. Magical Realism is American Street by Ibi Zoboi. Short stories collections is going to be the book that is backed by We Need Diverse Books: Flying Lessons and Other Short Stories. Yeah, a majority of these came out in 2017, but since the new hype of future 2018/9 reads includes more? Um, yes please.

Chosen Ones: I’m talking about Chosen ones with a kick butt team. TEAMWORK. None of those lonely Iron-Man-style COs. I’m talking The Golden Trio (though I love The Silver Trios more), Camp Half-Blood, heck. Ones that value teamwork and partners.

Quest: Sorta like the Chosen One, but I don’t mind it being more Solo.

Destiny/Time Travel: I’m basing this off of Your Name. by Makoto Shinkai, but damn. Time travel/partners across time. Just...those kind of love stories.

Superheroes: Another recent love, with Not Your Sidekick and My Hero Academia taking the love of superheroes and turning it around. Also, with Jason Reynolds’ new Miles Morales release (currently reading this!).

Police Brutality/Power Abuse: 2017 has given us The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. This book. These kind of stories have always been under my radar but until I read THUG, I did not read much. One of the reasons I enjoyed To Kill A Mockingbird is because of the challenge against societal norms and power abuse. Other books: Virginia VS Loving, All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brandon Kiely, and so many others.

Psychological Thrillers/Whodunit: I love a good whodunit story. I love thrillers that keep me on my seat. Two that are YA that I love, love, love are The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich and Allegedly by Tiffany D Jackson.

That’s all I can think of so far. This is more of a reflection on my current reads and tastes. Y’all, book ‘ear-perks’/buzzwords are what make readers individuals.

The Masked Singer Season 3 Episode 7: Last But Not Least, Let’s Meet Group C (Kickoffs Commentary and Guesses)

Hello fellow Masked Singer lovers! Welcome (or welcome back) to my commentary and guesses for the Masked Singer. Last night, we meet the last group of 6 masks for the season, Group C. The group consists of the Night Angel, Bear, T-Rex, Rhino, Astronaut, and Swan.

Evaluating the whole group, like I did with Group B, this is the most bizarre group of masks ever, like wow. That reveal was absolutely insane, so let’s just get right into it...

As you know, this is a **SPOILER ALERT**, avert your eyes now if you don’t want to know what happens during this episode. This is a disclaimer, don’t say I never warned you.

Ok so the first Group C mask to go home was:

*DRUMROLL PLEASE*

THE BEAR

Alright, so I would be lying if I said I didn’t see this coming. She was alright, I was between her and the T-Rex for the elimination with my money going to the T-Rex but whatever she wasn’t the best vocally out of the group at all. Having said that, I would never ever in a million gazillion years ever would have guessed correctly who she was... I am not going to lie the weirdest thing I have seen on this show was this person singing Baby Got Back.

And the person that made me laugh out of shock and was revealed to be the Bear is...

SARAH FREAKING PALIN (and I thought Tony Hawk was shocking... ya I am still shook at how bizarre this is... u think I am lying? Look at the picture...yup that is Nick Cannon twerking, I said bizarre and I didn’t joke)

Ok her performance was not what I expected from former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee... heck, I never thought a politician would be on the Masked Singer. Not getting into politics, because I really hate politics with a burning passion, but wow I never would’ve thought a republican would be on the show. AND HER SINGING BABY GOT BACK?! Wtf, and she freaking knew all of the words!! Like, I am impressed not gonna lie. People have been hating her on the internet but kudos to her for going for it and yup it’s weird but she went for it and wasn't scared to be judged. I respect that, you go Sarah Pailin, you rap about big butts.

Anyways, looking back at the clues, it makes sense:

Ice Skates= she always talks about how she is a hockey mom

As and Ks playing cards= AK= Alaska Abbreviation

Calendar with “live”written under Saturday= SNL = Tina Fey impersonating her on SNL

At the start of the show, Nick said that there are 2 people who were voted Time’s Most Influential People = she was one of them

Alright, so shock aside, let’s talk about the remaining contestants going to the playoffs:

1. The Night Angel

Performance: I really enjoyed the Night Angel’s performance even though her mask is so creepy and kind of hard to look at. However, she is one of the strongest, if not the strongest, singer in this group. Her voice is fantastic and I love her tone. You can tell she’s been doing this for a while. I do know exactly who this is, my guess being:

KANDI BURRUS (Real Housewives of Atlanta)

The clues make a lot of sense to my guess:

Doors with “4,” “5,” and “6″ = She sang a song called “4,5,6″

Group of grandmas= has a restaurant called “The Old Lady Gang”

Men in duck bills= she wrote “bills, bills, bills” for Destiny’s Child

2. The Astronaut

Performance: Ok, so yes I get it he was pretty shaky but he was nervous give him a break. I don’t care though because he is my favorite and I love him so much. I really want him to go far in the competition because I know how he sings and he is fantastic. Having said that, from the moment I heard his voice, I was convinced that he is:

HUNTER HAYES

Ok, so the Internet agrees with me based on voice, but the clues also correlate:

“if you want something enough”= one of his most popular songs is Wanted

“This might sound crazy”= another popular song, I want crazy

“Code Blue”= releasing a 3-part album called Wild Blue

Skeleton Foot= duet with Victoria Justice 2011 version of Footloose soundtrack

Beginning of show, Nick also said that one of the masks won a Guinness World Record, which Hunter did for the most city performances in 24 hours

3. T-Rex

Performance: Ok, this is not my favorite performer I am not going to lie, but she got so much energy wow. She isn’t a singer like not at all, but she is a great dancer and capped full of energy. I burned calories with her, damn. There is only one person who is this energetic and bonkers... and I am so happy that finally a YouTuber is on the show, so my guess is:

JOJO SIWA

Her voice and energy gave it away to me, but also her clues are so obvious:

“Put into a magical world where I was one of dozens talented creatures pirouetting the land” = reference to Dance Moms where she appeared for 2 seasons

Drawing with North and West= famous playdate with Kim Kardashian’s daughter North West

Bow and arrow= her line of bows and the fact that she always wears them in her hair

A balloon with the shape of a U with white, blue, and pink stars= the star colors are reminiscent of what she wears/her branding and the U could mean YouTube, since her channel is so popular (she is a YouTuber after all)

The other person who was Time’s most influential person was Jojo, last year being most influential on the internet.

4. Rhino

Performance: Ok, I love Rhino. He is such an unexpected favorite for me. I love his voice, he is such an amazing vocalist. Wow, he is amazing. The thing is I feel the same way I did at first with the banana. Is he a country singer or is he an athlete? I really cannot tell. Some people are saying it’s Tim McGraw. Others are saying it’s an athlete and I also heard some guy from Lady Antebellum at one point. I have no idea who he can be.

The clues were pretty confusing:

Magazine covers with Masked Quarterly and “Rhi-no? More like Rhi-yes!”

5. Swan

Performance: I really liked Swan’s performance, she is pretty awesome. I’ll admit she had a shaky start but she’s pretty good. Her voice isn’t as strong and powerful as Rhino, Night Angel, and Astronaut, but that doesn’t make her any less amazing. Also, she has the costume I would want to have if I were on the Masked Singer. Based on the voice, I think she is:

JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT

It makes sense because of the clues:

Ghost= she starred on the show Ghost Whisperer

Heart pool floatie= “Love” her middle name

Megaphone= starred in horror movie in 90s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” where her character is screaming

She is on 911, a crime show on Fox, which is the same network as The Masked Singer.

365 Days of 90's Songs

Every day of 2017 (or at least close to it), I posted a different song from the 1990′s on my Facebook page. When I started it, I had no rules and no plan. I just started posting songs that came to me that I enjoyed from that era. To be honest, I had always done a lot of research on 90′s music because in film school (2010-ish), I outlined a screenplay set in 1996 and deep dove into the music then. As 2017 went on, and I continued to work 70-80 hours a week in film production, updating the list became cumbersome, but I still refused to post weak 90′s songs like “U Can’t Touch This”, “Barbie Girl” or “Blue (Da Ba De)” etc. If you like songs like that then please go listen to them, but I’m not going to pretend that I enjoyed them at all in the 90′s or now.

Looking back on this list, I wish I had put a little more thought into creating a cohesive mix or including my favorite songs, many of which were left off because I ran out of time, but most of the fun of doing this list was just winging it and seeing if anyone liked any of the random songs I did when I was 7-17 years old. I’m going to make an Apple Music and Spotify playlist out of all of these songs but compiling this full list in the proper order already took enough time for this weekend.
