a nimbo render paintover! as an excuse to share rohan and nimbus references! for totally selfless purposes. not like i am desperate for more art of them or anything. of course.

this time i had patience to set up the lights in blender despite how long it takes for the preview to render every time because so much shiny metal... happy with how it turned out.

relevant note one: if you overlap the models, nimbus’ face neatly fits over rohan’s (though their eyes are lower since baby features). they are technically taller because their helmet forehead is larger. but nimbus’ heels sit higher from the floor in their shoes than rohan’s do, making nimbus a wee bit shorter than rohan actually. cute detail i enjoyed discovering!

that thing with the messed up texture on their shoulder is how the skyboard attaches. there’s a shot with it further down. nanite magic woo!

relevant note number two: nimbus here is missing their earrings. i couldn’t get the texture to show up and they looked super awk so i took them off. they look like this:

they are meant to be the same silvery material as the rest of the head and the inside glows like their neck details. i saw it fuchsia-ish in game, not sure if it changes.

thigh window!

back handle windows. there is a large gap in the middle between their back and the corset which you can kind of see here. 

that waist-thigh ratio though... and the belly curve. ooft.

his back brace and thighs are thicc but he ain’t got any less cake than nimbo. promise.

relevant note number i forgor: the model wasn’t intended to be used for animation or seen in good lighting so the palms of his hands are the same colour as the rest of him. keep in mind to lighten them when you paint him <3 also whew aren’t those apple pie details breathtaking ...

he also has a kissy neck window but it is covered by his fancy half cape thing.

thoughts and feelings on Neomuna and the Cloudstriders?

it's been a minute since i ran lightfall so i went back through ishtar to read up and here's what i've got: I think they mirror the guardians in a really interesting way. While being granted the light is functionally random and not something the lightbearer in question has a say in (as they're usually dead), becoming a cloudstrider is an entirely voluntary process (with perhaps the exception of the first cloudstrider, who acquired her abilities accidentally). There's also mentions of cloustriders being vetted, meaning that the decision to become a cloudstrider is not purely up to the individual but rather the community, which is interesting when placed in contrast to how ghosts just kind of.. pick a corpse based on vibes and hope things turn out ok. Also the whole "ten years and then your body rapidly decays around you" thing versus being able to die ad infinitum (assuming nothing happens to your ghost). Also cloudstriders on their own are fascinating too. Deliberately sacrificing not only your life but, to an extent, your ability to be and act like a person is wild. From the Cloud Strider Legacies lorebook:

"You don't die after ten years. You die the second you gulp your first breath with those new nanite-enhanced lungs. You don't get to be human anymore. Not with this kind of power. You don't get foibles or fears or wants. You're an ideal.

You need to be the best things about this city—the kindness, the empathy, the courage—and you give up the luxury of weakness."

(also not to get back on the comparison train but the whole thing about becoming a cloudstrider being a death in and of itself versus resurrection being the first memory a guardian has.) Also I like Nimbus, and I hope we'll be able to give them cookies next dawning.

Cloudstrider Monuments

Okay, i was gonna write this a while ago but never did. So, my boyfriend and I were hanging out in the Hall of Heroes after we finished the Strider exotic quest. My bf realized it there seemed to be way too many monuments around the room, considering the few things we knew off hand:

The collapse was 1600 years ago. We know this tidbit from Petra Venj. In the lore entry "Refusal" from Forsaken, there is this line: "She [Petra] bites back the rest: how she wishes that back in two-thousand-and-whatever, when the Darkness hurled mankind off the height of its Golden Age to plummet sixteen centuries into barbarism, it had done just a slightly better job." So we know that Neomuna have been around for approximately 1600 years.

Cloudstriders live 10 years, due to the augmentations they go through.

There are only ever two cloudstriders at once.

Alright, with this knowledge, we decided to count up all the monuments in the room and around it, which gave us 480 monuments. This number might not be entirely accurate, but it gives us a good estimate. Now let's divide this by two (since there are two cloudstriders at once) and we are down to 240. If this is multiplied by 10 (for the max amount of years a cloudstrider could live) we get 2400 years.

2400 years of Cloudstriders. Now, obviously this doesn't take into account that cloudstriders can die on duty (like Rohan), but it seems that the Neomuni live in relative peace besides occasionally dealing with the Vex. This also doesn't take into account the early days of Neomuna. We don't know how many cloudstriders there are at once originally, but it seems like there have never been many. We also don't really know how new/old of a concept cloudstriders are. Was Strider, the first cloudstrider, around 1600 years ago or more recently? So yeah, if we think cloudstriders have been around for 1600 years and you minus 1600 from 2400, that's still a good 800 years. It seems weird that there would be that many Cloudstriders. But who knows.

Honestly, my bf and I probably just over analyzed the Hall of Heroes after we got done roasting Quinn for being a bad archivist and having none of this important archival material to Neomuna's history backed up. So take this all with a grain of salt. Except for the 1600 years detail. I think a lot of people don't realize that D2 takes place in at least 3600 CE (and it's probably a lot later than that cause of we don't know how long the golden age was).

Alright, I’m gonna say it.

Neomuna is Polynesian. Between the aesthetic and design of the city and Rohan and Nimbus’s physical features, it’s Polynesian. The designs on the buildings would 100% be seen on a pareo. Rohan looks like several of my uncles in Hawaii. Nimbus has my cheekbones. The ‘plants’ and little ponds they have indoors. The artwork on the walls of the other cloudstriders and color use.

Neomuna is futuristic Hawaii/Samoa.
