Strike Up The Band
Back at it again with an Advent Calendar! Just writing for whatever fandom or pairing feels right at the moment. Using this list by @raven-cincaide-words Day 1: First Snow | Newcomer | Forced Friendliness  Fandom: Supernatural - Pairing: DeanCas 1.1k[Ao3]
Dean could barely see the field through the cloud of his breath. “Cas, I’m freezing my tits off out here.”
Cas hummed, bringing his arm around Dean’s waist. “They’re on next and then we can go sit in the car.”
“That’ll be like another half hour,” Dean whined, turning his body closer into Cas’s. “I can feel the bleacher in my asshole.”
“I told you to bring your seat cushion.”
“I’m not fucking geriatric!”
“No, you’re cold.”
Dean grumbled, burying his hands in the bottom of Cas’s jacket. Cas didn’t even flinch.
It was starting to snow. The first of the year so it probably wouldn’t stick but it was still an unpleasant new obstacle to the day. Not only were they cold, they were about to be wet and cold.
“At least the season is almost over,” Cas reassured him. “And if they make championships, I think it’s in Florida.”
“Ugh, but Florida sucks. I hate driving in Florida.”
“But it’s warm.”
Dean grumbled again, his thigh pressed all the way up Cas’s. Cas laid his head on Dean’s shoulder.
Dean knew Jack wasn’t gonna be an athlete. That’s okay – Dean hadn’t been an athlete in high school either. Dean wasn’t gonna be able to help him throw a ball or shoot a hoop or whatever. He was expecting Jack to do a bunch of nerd shit: build robots for science club or a math decathlon or some shit. He was ready to help with those.
But Jack joined fucking marching band. So Dean had to go to competitions for entire weekends and freeze his ass off on the bleachers only to see his kid perform for fifteen minutes.
“Have you talked to him about indoor?” Cas asked.
Dean groaned. “There’s more?”
Cas hummed. “Another winter season. It goes until May. But they only have percussion and colorguard.”
“Jack plays the trombone,” Dean pointed out.
“He was thinking he might want to do colorguard.”
Dean laughed. “With that kid’s coordination? Is he serious?”
Cas smiled, opening his mouth to respond, when they were interrupted by another parent carrying a truly insane amount of blankets..
“Hi!” The mother said, brightly. “You’re here with Rock Hills, right?”
“Uh, yeah,” Dean said, looking between her and her and the field. The band was still setting up.
“Oh, fabulous!” She said, taking the section of bench next to Cas. She put some blankets under her to sit on, hiked another over her shoulders, and wrapped yet another one around her legs. “I have been finding it so hard to get good watch buddies. My son just transferred!”
“Oh, nice,” Dean said, smiling for her. “What’s he play?”
“Oh, trumpet, of course!” She waved a hand like that was a given. “My boy always needs to be the star.”
“I don’t see how a trumpet is inherently more star-like than any other instrument,” Cas said, frowning.
“Oh, you both must be new to this!” The woman said, smiling in a condescendingly sympathetic way. “I was in band in my time. Everyone knows that if a marching band were like The Rolling Stones, the trumpets would be Mick Jagger.”
“So you were a trumpet?” Dean asked.
“Oh, heavens no! Far too masculine, can you imagine? No, I was a flute. Obviously.”
“So… Brian Jones?” Dean asked. Cas chuckled which made Dean grin brighter.
“Who? No, listen, the flutes are clearly the star of the woodwinds. Which are inherently more delicate and feminine.”
“These sound like very convoluted gender politics,” Cas said. Dean didn’t disagree, but he still elbowed Cas a bit. They still had to sit outside for twenty minutes with this woman.
“Oh, you’re just silly men,” she said, waving them off with a laugh. “Probably played sports in high school. I suppose I can’t expect you to understand.”
“Right,” Dean said, turning back to the field. He was so grateful it was rude to speak during a performance so he could ignore this woman for the next ten minutes.
Except even after the drum major gave their salute, this woman kept trying to engage them. Sure, this band wasn’t their band, but she could have still shown some respect. Dean kept shooting her polite smiles hoping she’d take the hint and shut the fuck up but she never did. She just kept prattling through the whole program.
After the drum major gave her parting salute and Dean and Cas had finished clapping, Cas turned to the woman. “That was extremely rude.”
She sputtered, clearly indignant.
“For someone who claims to be so familiar with the culture surrounding marching band, your lack of awareness surrounding the expected  etiquette during competition performances is frankly upsetting. I’m sure I’ll meet your son as he’s a part of the brass section, along with our son, but I’m not sure I’ll welcome you to watch with us again. It’s no wonder you haven’t found anyone to sit with if you’re this intolerable of company.”
“Cas,” Dean warned. He winced an apology at the woman. She wasn’t even looking at him, her jaw dropped.
“‘Our’ son? Like both of yours? You’re gay?”
Dean forced a laugh. “I mean where else do you expect to find friends of Dorothy than in Kansas, right?”
“Well, then I guess it’s good I’m such intolerable company to you, because I have found that you’re equally intolerable to me,” she said, grabbing her purse and an armful of blankets. “Now if you excuse me.”
“Wait, are we intolerable because Cas yelled at you or the queer thing.Lady, was it Cas or the queer thing?!”
She didn’t answer him even as he called after her so he just shrugged and turned back to Cas.
Cas held up one of her blankets. Dean wasn’t sure if she dropped it or if he snagged it from her, but he was delighted either way.
“Oh, nice!” he said, taking the blanket and wrapping it around both of their shoulders. He kissed Cas on the nose. “You gotta stop scaring the other parents away, sweetheart.”
Cas rolled his eyes, snaking his hand across his lap to join Dean’s. “She was insipid and shallow. She didn’t even get your Rolling Stones joke.”
“I know! He was the sax player! That’s a woodwind! That was the perfect joke.”
“And you know the saxophone is a woodwind,” Cas complimented, leaning into him. “You’re learning.”
Dean winked, tapping his temple. “Not just a hat rack.”
Cas laughed and the announcer introduced Jack’s school and Dean and Cas lost the next fifteen minutes to hooting and hollering and being generally embarrassing as was their god given right as gay fathers.
And if they snuggled in the impala, heaters on full blast, all the way until awards that evening, than that was between Dean and his babies.

For the "Holidays with the Winchesters: A very Destiel Christmas Advent Calendar" by @archervale and @wormstacheangel
Day Two: Tradition
There is a knock on Cas’ open door, he looks up as Dean steps into the room.
“Hey, Cas. We are going to head out in a bit. Do you want to come with us?”
Cas stands up from where he was lying on the bed. “Oh, where are you going?”
“Well since we are actually going to spend Christmas in the Bunker and there isn’t an apocalypse happening, I was thinking we could get a tree. I told the kid about it and he’s already really excited.”
They had moved closer together, while Dean was talking and were now standing just inches away from each other.
“I would love to come with you.” Cas says. The grin that stretches across Dean’s face, makes Cas smile at him in return. He supposes that Jack isn’t the only one excited to do this.
“Great, come on!” Dean grabs his hand and pulls him through the hallway, towards the garage.
Sam and Jack are already waiting in the Impala. Cas is surprised to see that Sam is sitting with Jack in the back. Dean lets go of his hand so they can get into the car.
“Hey Sam, why aren’t you sitting up front? I thought the leg room isn’t as great in the back?” Cas asks as he turns to look at Sam.
“I’ll be fine for the one hour drive. And I can stretch my legs out towards the middle.” Sam reassures him, so Cas turns back to face the front, but he does catch the teasing grin Sam sends towards his brother.
Dean starts up the Impala and starts the drive towards the tree farm. The drive is mostly uneventful, though Cas is surprised that Dean is playing Christmas music. And if Dean reaches out to him to take hold of his hand, well he’ll just quietly enjoy it.
The Impala has barely come to a stop and Jack is immediately out of the car, pretty much bouncing towards the trees. Sam follows a bit slower, but he catches up to Jack to look at the trees with him. Dean and Cas come together at the front of the car, their hands immediately finding each other. They walk behind Sam and Jack at a leisure pace.
After a moment Cas breaks the comfortable silence, “you know I think this is really great. Sam and Jack seem to be enjoying themselves and I can’t really complain. Maybe we should do this every year from now on?”
“Well maybe this can be our new tradition. You know, getting the tree, decorating it while listening to Christmas music. And at the end of the day, maybe we can all sit in the Dean Cave and watch Christmas movies.” Dean says wistfully. If his imagination is anything like Cas’ he can understand. The tree lit up and them cuddled together under a blanket, drinking hot chocolate, with Sam and Jack sitting close by.
“I would really like that. I guess, we’ll just make it up as we go.”
Dean pulls Cas closer by their still intertwined hands. “Yeah, I guess we really are.” Dean says, before he pulls him in for a short kiss. When they seperate, they look at each other for a moment, just smiling at each other. After a short time they rejoin Jack and Sam in looking at the Christmas trees, trying to find the perfect one.
And if the tree ends up looking a bit crooked and rough in a few places, well then it’s just as perfectly imperfect as their little family.

So I was mindlessly scrolling my sm after Christmas lunch (that lasted forever) and I stumbled into this
My first reaction was shock. Because I'm a one-ship only girl, and of course nothing else exists outside Destiel. WHO ARE ALL THOSE SHIPS ON TOP OF THEM??
But then my very sugar-fogged-very rational mind went into problem solving mode. I accepted (surprisingly fast) that Destiel didn't do very well this year on AO3, despite my best effort. So I started looking for a solution because in no way they're going to be that low or (God forbid!) even left out on next year's top 100 ships chart on AO3.
So here's me shouting out to artists, writers and hesitant, would-be artists and writers. Please. Please! Write, write, write and more important publish, publish, PUBLISH!! It does not matter how long your work is, or what language you write in. It doesn't have to be perfect, superior or amazing! It just need to be put out there.
A few tips:
Don't forget to fill the field relationship with Castiel /Dean Winchester when you upload your story, otherwise it won't count .
If you have multiple stories all tied together by a theme, like e.g. promptober, advent calendars etc, please publish them as single stories part of a series instead of different chapters of the same story. That will greatly help to increase the number of published stories.
Come on guys, let's bring the supreme ship back on the medal position it deserves!

I’m looking at your “SPN Advent Calendar” (aka “Holidays with the Winchesters”) and it kinda looks like y’all are baiting people into participating, while not really welcoming Sam? Advertising it as Holidays with the Winchesters is misleading when you’re clearly focusing on Destiel. You aren’t including all of SPN and its many ships, despite tagging it that way. I was excited at first! But now I see it’s just gonna be a ton of Destiel and little else. :( Feels bad, man.
Hello! 🎄
I don't understand how we can "bait" people to participate but anyone is welcome too! We call it "Holidays with the Winchesters" because that is their household name. Jack and Cas are official Winchesters for us and the brothers, I also named it like that because of the movie Christmas with the Kranks. Not that original.
Also, I don't see how we are not welcoming Sam? While we are focusing on Destiel, and created this for our destiecule, you can easily write for Sam. As long as you follow the rules, any ship is welcome. I was gonna write a few prompts for Sam and Eileen! But we mainly are Destiel shippers so of course we're gonna focus on them and their whole family.

Hope this clears it up for you 💚🎄💙

Fanart Advent Calendar: Day 3!
For The Devil & The Chariot, by n_nami and phoenix_ascended. An amazing soulmates AU with every chapter inspired by a tarot card. My fanart is inspired by one of the last chapters, The Sun!
This piece is part of a personal challenge: an advent calendar that will feature one fanart a day for some of my favorite fics, from the 1st of December to the 24th. As it's Sunday, this one was a much more complicated design than the two first ones, but I'll go back to simpler drawings tomorrow!

There Was Winter’s Cold, A Destiel Advent Calendar December 2
Tumblr media
Masterpost
Alright. Now, this might have been too much for other people, but he was not other people. He was Dean Winchester, and growing up the way he had, not only had he met his fair share of crazies, but he’d also witnessed his fair share of meltdowns by the time he had turned ten. (Admittedly, the biggest and craziest had been his own father’s, but he didn’t like to think of that).
So he had just rescued a guy out of the river who thought he was a water wraith. Big deal.
“I see.”
He actually relaxed for some reason. Dean couldn’t help but shake his head ever so slightly, but hey, they needed to get away from here and into something dry fast, and if he really believed he was a water wraith, he’d hardly have an address, so he said, “Come one” and held out his hand.
He stared it as if he had never been helped up before – man, for all knew Dean about that kind of lifestyle, that might even be true – then grabbed it. He told himself it was ridiculous to feel sparks because there weren’t any, why should there be, and dragged him up to his feet.
“Alright. So first of all we’ll have to get somewhere warm and dry. Come on.”
And he led the way despite the man’s quiet question of “dry?”
They soon enough reached Baby – thank God Dean usually used his car to go to the river even if it wasn’t strictly necessary, because he really would not have wanted to walk through town drenched as he was, and with a guy who had no idea how to look inconspicuous, it quickly turned out, in tow at that.
Dean needed a minute or two to realize, but then he became aware what it was – the guy didn’t blink.
Then he realized something else. “I’m Dean. Dean Winchester. What’s your name?“
„Castiel“.
Dean waited for something else but when it wasn’t forthcoming, he decided to accept it for nw. Whether the guy was a drifter or he really was a supernatural creature (the next moment, he chided himself for the thought. Really, typical of him. One look into blue eyes and there he went… of course all of that stuff wasn’t real. Dad had gone insane somewhere along the line, only they had been too young to understand, until thankfully Bobby and Ellen had stepped in. So really, whatever there was, whatever kind of delusion was at work here… oh well first of all he had to get them dry...)
And so he did what he did best and concentrated on the here and now. They got to Baby, he made the guy get in with only wincing slightly as he thought of the upholstery, and then they were off.
Dean was focusing on driving, which was not being made any easier by Castiel commenting, “I’ve never been inside a car before.”
He finally settled on “I see” and drove home.
Once Castiel was busy drying off in his bathroom, Dean went to look for information. He had to know what illusion he was dealing with here.
Time to grab some of the books he’d kept and see what all this was about.
The Idea of Water Wraiths originated in Scotland. A wraith is thought to be an apparition -- a specter, a vision, an unreal image – and a Water Wraith is a spirit thought to preside over the waters. They supposedly take the form of skinny, old women with scowling features who dress in green. The Water Wraiths try to lure unsuspecting travelers to their death by drowning them.
Alright. That was… something he supposed. Well, not the drowning stuff, but he had expected something like that anyway. Every creature was dangerous in their own way, as far as he could tell from what he knew, because –
He realized where he was going and shook his head. It wasn’t, he reminded himself, as if this was real. He’d just rescued someone whose grasp on reality could be best described as tenuous, and if he truly believed himself to be a water wraith, then who knew what he could get up to? Fine, so he had not appeared to be dangerous so far, but man, first impressions could be very, very wrong, he had learned that one the hard way too.
He would just have to be careful, and if Sammy called or one of his friends dropped by… it wasn’t unusual for him to help out where he could, not really. The way he had gown up, it was just the right thing to do, and people were too selfish to begin with. So, he would put all that aside and try and do what he could for the guy.
There. That was a plan. Now he just had to stick to it.

I'll give it to someone special
Advent Calendar Day 2! (prompts by @raven-cincaide-words) Today’s prompts: Christmas Excitement | Ex | No Reply  Fandom: Supernatural - Pairing: DeanCas .6k[Ao3]
Cas was in the shower and his phone wouldn’t stop vibrating.
Dean groaned, pulling Cas’s pillow over his head as he tried to sleep in a little more. It was odd for Cas to be up before him, but Dean knew he was just really excited for Christmas. It had been four years now of them being together and Cas being human and celebrating Christmas together but it never quite lost the shine for Cas. Dean smiled to himself, even as he tried to smother himself back to sleep. Watching Cas experience humanity with wonder made Dean fall in love with life all over again.
But he didn’t love Cas’s phone fucking BLOWING UP.
He gave up on sleep, tossing the pillow and grabbing Cas’s phone.
Cas had started a group chat. Of it looked like everyone he knew.
Even as Dean looked at it, new notifications of messages of Merry Christmas and reactions to everyone else’s messages kept popping up. Dean swore to himself, scrolling up to see what Cas could have sent to have even Claire texting them this early.
He got to the top and scrubbed a hand over his face. It was the photo of the two of them Cas had convinced him to have taken.
Dean and Cas had had to go undercover at an officer’s Christmas party and Dean had had a little too much fun buying ugly sweaters for them. He was let loose in a thrift ship and managed to find the most heinous couple’s sweaters of all time. They even attached on the sides with strings of working lights. It said “Together, we make Christmas bright.”
Sam secretly sent Cas coordinates to a goddamn Macy’s so now Dean had a professional photo of him and Cas in these sweaters.
And Cas had sent it to everyone he knew.
They looked sweet in the photo together. Dean is holding Cas low on his hip, his head tilted down so his cheek rested on Cas’s hair. Cas’s hand was in Dean’s back pocket and he’d squeezed Dean’s ass at the last second to make a laugh explode out of him. His cheek was against Dean’s shoulder and he wore a smile that looked so pleased with himself.
Dean had already been planning to have the photo framed.
Cas’s phone was still vibrating. Dean sighed and turned it on silent, reaching for his own phone.
His phone was opened to his messages. For fuck’s sake, had Cas sent the picture to everyone he knew, too?
But no. It looked like he only sent it to one person on Dean’s phone.
Dean was still snickering when Cas came back in, his towel around his waist.
“Good morning, Dean,” Cas said, smiling. He walked in front of Dean and kissed his forehead. “Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, Cas,” Dean said back, pulling Cas back to give him a proper kiss on the mouth. He held up his phone. “Wanna tell me why you’re baiting Crowley?”
Cas didn’t even bother trying to look anything but smug. “I just want to make sure he’s seen it.”
“And you couldn’t include him in the group chat?”
Cas wrinkled his nose. “Absolutely not.”
Dean chuckled, shaking his head as Cas turned to their shared dresser to pull on some clothes. “Well he definitely saw it,” Dean told him, wiggling his phone in Cas’s direction. “Fucker still had read receipts on.”
“Of course he does,” Cas muttered. “He’s a petty bitch who wants you to know.”
“Yeah?” Dean asked, grinning. “And what does that make you?”
Cas turned to Dean, eyes flashing. “Well, we always knew you had a type.”

For the "Holidays with the Winchesters: A very Destiel Advent Calendar" by @archervale and @wormstacheangel
Day Thirteen: Traffic
Ao3
Dean stares at the strip of pictures they had taken a few days ago, at a photo booth. They had done a few different poses, but Dean is focused on the last one. Cas has his head thrown back in a laugh, while most of Dean’s head is hidden underneath the Santa hat that Cas had pulled over his eyes, moments before the picture was taken. Damn, Cas looked so good with the genuine joy spread across his face.
They had both known that there was an expiration date on their time together and yet Dean hadn’t been able to stop himself from falling for Cas.
It was just supposed to be a favor for Sammy. Sam had called him up about two weeks ago, to ask if one of his colleagues/friends could stay with Dean for a few days, while the guy attended a conference. Dean hadn’t minded, he had a whole house to himself and the thought of actually sharing it with someone had made Dean happy. Of course he didn't know that the nerdy guy, Sam had been telling him about for a couple of years now, would turn out to look that hot. Initial attractiveness aside, they had just clicked from day one and had been inseparable since their first meeting.
Dean had known that Cas would be leaving for England, after the one week conference. But he had still gone and caught feelings for the dorky history professor. And now Cas was at the airport, waiting for his flight, while Dean sulked in self pity. Dean gently swipes his finger over the soft smile that Cas is wearing in the first picture, not being able to help himself and smile in return.
Oh. Oh.
Dean hadn’t just caught feelings for Cas. He had fallen in love with him.
Making a split second decision, Dean grabs his keys and runs out the door. He takes the stairs in one long stride, in his haste to get to Baby. Revving the engine he leaves his driveway with squealing tires.
Dean taps his fingers against the steering wheel anxiously. He chances a glance at his watch and lets out a frustrated sigh. Cas’ plane is scheduled to take off in about ten minutes and if this traffic jam doesn’t clear up soon, Dean won’t be able to make it in time. That’s what he gets for taking the highway a few days before Christmas. He should have taken the longer route, which would have taken up less time in hindsight.
Dean sighs in relief, when traffic finally starts moving faster than a snail’s pace. Once he has taken the exit, he pushes down on the gas. He makes sure to stay close to the speed limit though, since it wouldn’t help him if he got pulled over now. Another glance at his watch tells him that Cas’ flight is boarding in a few minutes.
As soon as Baby is parked, Dean is running up to the airport doors. He checks the flight list to find Cas’ gate number and makes his way there as fast as he can. When he gets there the door to the jetway is already closed and Dean can just watch in dismay as he watches the plane take off down the runway.
Dean sinks into one of the chairs with his head in his hands. He might have just fumbled the best relationship of his entire life. Dean can feel his heart breaking, even though they weren’t even together. He sits there for a few minutes mourning the loss of a relationship that never even existed. Wiping away the stray tears that had escaped his eyes, Dean stands up from his seat. Resolutely Dean makes his way back to Baby, in the knowledge that he will allow himself to really, truly break down once he is alone in his home.
On the way back Dean makes sure to stay away from the highway as much as he can. He makes it back to his home in less time than it took him to get to the airport. Yeah should’ve stayed away from the highway the first time around. Though if Dean is being honest with himself he wasn’t really thinking about anything but Cas on his way to the airport.
Once Dean steps out of the car he notices the person sitting on the steps. That trench coat is unmistakable and Dean just stays rooted to the spot in shock.
“I couldn’t go through with it.” Cas says as he stands up from where he was sitting on one of the porch steps, as Dean finally gets his legs to move. “I was about to board the plane, when I realized that I don’t want to leave you.”
While Cas was talking, Dean had steadily moved closer and is now just standing inches away. They stare at each other for a few seconds, before they are pulling each other into a desperate kiss. Once they finally part they rest their foreheads against each other, just enjoying their closeness.
“Are we crazy for this? Isn’t this too much, too soon?” Cas asks.
“Well at least we are crazy together. You know I was at the airport trying to stop you from going back to England. I must have just missed you.” Dean admits into the air between them.
Cas looks shocked at that, before letting out a low chuckle. “I’m so glad I didn’t get on that plane now. You know, while I was waiting for my plane to board, I was hoping you would show up and confess your love for me, like in one of those cheesy rom coms. At the last second I decided that if you didn’t show up, I would just take fate into my own hands and get a Taxi. But I was greeted by a locked door and you and Baby were nowhere to be seen.”
“Fucking traffic man. I made the mistake of taking the highway and was stuck for like 30 minutes. I watched your plane take off. I thought I had just lost the love of my life, before we even got to be in a relationship.” Dean confesses.
Dean can feel Cas stiffen in his arms. What had he- Oh. Had he just blurted out that he was in love with Cas?
Before he can truly begin to spiral, Cas tugs him into another kiss. This one much gentler than their first one, but somehow also deeper.
“I love you, Dean.” Cas says, after they withdraw from their kiss.
A smile breaks out across Dean’s face and a matching one is starting to form on Cas’ face.
“I love you, too.” Dean utters.
They kiss again. This time it’s more a press of lips against lips, their smiles too big to really make the kiss any deeper. Dean is really looking forward to what other kisses they get to share in the future.
Cas shivers in Dean’s arms and Dean takes in Cas’ state. He must have waited out here for at least 20 minutes.
“Let’s get you inside and warmed up. We can figure out everything else later.” Dean says as he takes Cas’ hand and pulls him into the house.
