- FAM OUT - DREAM LIFE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The barking of the dogs awakened Sophia from her perfect world. The Filipina was cooking, she loved doing it after a busy day, and with the house to herself, the peace she felt was what she needed to end the day. As soon as she put the platter in the oven, Sophia heard little footsteps running towards where she was, and then she could finally see the little copies of her running around the house.
"MOM!" Bending down to be at the height of the twins, Sophia opened her arms, being greeted by a slight impact when the two four-year-old twins hugged her.
"Mom, Mommy Yn took us to the playground, and let us play a lot of hours." Samantha, the older twin – only for twelve minutes – said, emphasizing her words by moving her hands.
"And then she took us out for ice cream!" Denver, the younger twin said, covering his mouth with his little hands when he realized what he said.
"Dev! You weren't supposed to tell that part!" Sam said, stomping her foot on the floor and making an angry face that looked a lot like Sophia's.
"No, it's okay, my loves. I don't like it when you eat dessert before dinner, but I'll talk to your mom about it. Now go upstairs and I'll go upstairs to give you a bath, you little dirt." Sophia said, tickling the two children, who ran away screaming and running upstairs.
Seeing the twins' rush, you entered the kitchen, two backpacks in your hands and two stuffed monkeys hanging from your shoulders. As much as Sophia thinks it's great to see you in super sexy mom mode, she knows she has to scold you for giving the twins ice cream ahead of time.
"So, are kisses just for them? Or do I have one too?" Leaning in to give your wife a kiss, you missed the aim, making the kiss fall on Sophia's cheek, as she turned her face in the opposite direction.
"Not really, no kisses for mothers who do not comply with the other mother's orders." Sophia said, looking at you with that face you knew well, the one that gave you chills.
Already knowing that the twins would probably have snitched on you, you decided to go for the foolproof plan, puppy eyes. You knew you shouldn't give the twins ice cream, but they were so cute telling you the list of reasons why you should buy them ice cream.
"Baby, I'm sorry. But they were so cute with those little faces, I couldn't resist." You said, grabbing your wife's waist and making her look at you.
"You have to be tougher on them, Yn." Sophia said, putting her hands on the back of your neck.
"Sorry…" You said, kissing the Filipina on the cheek and hoping that would get you out of the punishment.
"All right." Sophia said, still with a warning look on her face. "But next time you don't escape me."
Shaking your head and with a smile on your face, you kissed Sophia. Your lips fitting perfectly and your tongues fighting for the dominance of the kiss. With one swift movement, you picked Sophia in your lap, placing her on the counter. Feeling your kisses on her neck, Sophia moaned lightly, covering her mouth with one hand so as not to make too much noise.
"Sophia." You called, as you went down your kisses around her neck.
"Say it, baby."
"Sophia." Stopping the kisses, Sophia looked into your eyes, only to see the smile on your face, before you whispered again. "Wake up!" Stunned, Sophia woke up in a jump, seeing you standing next to her on the bed. Looking at the clock on the bedside table, Sophia narrowed her eyes, the digital clock reading 02:34 in the morning.
"Baby, we have a problem."

I am Filipina American and I married a Jew. My husband Miki and I have committed to creating a Jewish household that feels culturally balanced. But I quickly learned that it’s not easy. Identity is a long and winding, self-guided journey. Born in LA and growing up in Jersey with immigrant parents, the pursuit of my identity was very passive. I didn’t feel like I needed to speak the language nor know how to cook my mom’s food. As an adult, I now feel the responsibility to honor my culture so that it will not get lost with me and in the next generation with our children. I know the definition of what it means to be Filipina-American-Jewish is mine and my family’s to hold, discover, and explore. What better way to express the love for our combined culture than through food?
Ube has always been the cornerstone of my favorite Filipinx desserts — from ube ice cream to ube cake rolls. You can taste subtle sweet hints of vanilla and a touch of nuttiness. I’ve always enjoyed flakey, buttery rugelach —especially all of the filling variations — and I’m happy to add my own variation to the mix. Here’s my take on rugelach.

Personal share:
My neighbor (who is a white, German American guy) is married to a native "Filipina" woman who was raised in a remote province in the Philippines as I was... and it's so refreshing to see his 6 year old "American" kids think differently from their (brainwashed/programmed) peers.
Like, for example, if you offer them candy or any sort of dessert, they would ask "does it have high fructose corn syrup?"
And me, being the daughter and grand-daughter of TRIBAL teachers in the Philippines, I asked her back: "what IS fructose corn syrup?" (I know what it is fyi, I'm just trying to engage).... to which she replied, "it's fake sugar and bad for your body." And they are the same way with television shows and books they're exposed to. And they are only 6. They remind me of how I was raised by my mom and grandma.
Most Americans like to downplay knowledge/wisdom (and when Americans do hype up "learning," it's usually in the name of EGO, i.e. "I'm better than you cause I'm educated")... And yall can excuse the shit and say, "because most Americans are in poverty" but my mom and dad literally lived in poverty in the Philippines? My dad was a squatter/homeless man in the Philippines before he became a custodian/chef for the US Navy. He was born in 1933 and my mom in 1944.... My mom was raised by a single mom of 10 kids IN THE MOUNTAINS where there were no libraries or easy access to food... My dad was literally a "war baby". He witnessed World War 2 at age 10.
Yet they both raised me in a household where we were exposed to the most complex and inter-cultural sorts of science, history, art, etc. AND IT NOT BECAUSE OF PRIVILEGE (I went to an "international school" in PI as a child around RICH European, Chinese, and Korean settlers) . My mom made sure to tell us everyday how poor they were growing up (she and my dad worked hard to save up US$89 a year to pay our tuition fee every year in the 90s).... but the reason why I am the way I am today is because they CHOSE to EXPOSE US to different cultures and knowledges due to the hardships they themselves faced growing up.
But most Americans OF ALL COLOR always TAKE THE EASY WAY OUT. And honestly, when my family moved to California when I was 13 (I am 38 now), I saw just how insecure and willfully stupid American kids are. That's why American public school is, to this day, the breeding ground for WILLFUL IGNORANCE. American kids GROW UP TO BE BULLIES.
And I'm not saying this in a condescending manner. I am saying this because it's in COLONIAL cultures like America that BREEDS the type of thinking that "critical thinking" is bad and "being a hard worker" is good.

My Flop Era: Is Lowkey Serving | Act 1, Entry #10
30 July 2022
I am tipsy as I write this so please bear with me. Thanks to Swipe Keyboard.     We went to Pink Pony Club and were served shots of tequila and beer. I also made a few Japanese and Filipino "friends" today. One of them is a man who insists on calling him Tito Shu. Botaxie (if you still remember him from my previous entries) is also there. SO.. Tito Shu and Botaxie-Chan are both at the Pink Pony Club. Ok? Tito Shu was with me and Meifei on the couch, while Botaxie-Chan was on the counter. We were cool; we were drinking, and eating, and laughing, and singing, and all that. Few bottles of beer and a few songs on the karaoke after, Tito Shu suddenly got upset. He called the bartender and started complaining, like a "Karen" level kind of complaining, but make it drunk. He yapped about "someone else" singing his song. That "someone else" is Botaxie-Chan. I asked the Filipina staff what was really going on and MY OH MY, the tea is HOT! Turns out.. they used to be best friends but fell out because of a girl! What in a soap opera drama is this sh*t? And about the song, turns out they put  on the same song but it was Botaxie's turn first. Botaxie went home because of that and promised to hangout with us tomorrow instead (that "tomorrow" is today). And Tito Shu, after he was back to his senses, apologized to us later.     True to his word, Botaxie-Chan picked us up earlier. His car is so handsome. Lol. He took us to a restaurant by a mountain that overlooks the sea. There are also ancient palaces and temples nearby (they look like in the game Super Mecha Champions. Lol). The place is beautiful. We ate different kinds of sashimi, tempura, and dumplings. On the way home I joked about wanting something sour. Next thing I knew, we stopped by an ice cream shop for a lemon ice cream because Tia Fei told Botaxie that "joke" of mine in Japanese. Lol.     BTW I forgot to tell you, we went to Shiraito Waterfalls yesterday. The place is so refreshing and beautiful. There we ate soumen. It looks like rice noodles, served cold, and you're supposed to eat it FROM a running water on a bamboo cut in half; catch the noodles with chopsticks and dip it in some sauce with ice. I'm sure it's so hard to imagine, and to explain, so just look It up. Lol. It's fun to eat, really. Very refreshing especially for the summer.     And for dessert we had kakigori. It is very similar to bingsu (shaved milk ice). I ordered matcha flavor, of course. It was AMAZING.     By the way, all the drinks I have had since we got here are all FREE. I didn't spend any yen on drinks. They were either a treat, complimentary, or someone else paid/ordered it for me/us. That's why I always write "we were served/ordered". So please don't get the impression that I have a lot of papers to burn. I don't. Lol.

English:
Plant Name: Mandarin Orange
Scientific Name: Citrus reticulata
Origin: Native to Southeast Asia, particularly China and the Philippines.
Description:
The mandarin orange is a small citrus tree known for its easy-to-peel fruit with a sweet and mildly tangy flavor. The tree typically grows to about 10–15 feet tall with glossy, evergreen leaves and fragrant white flowers. The fruit is smaller and less acidic than a regular orange, with a bright orange, thin, easy-to-peel rind. Mandarin oranges are widely cultivated for their fruit, which is enjoyed fresh, juiced, or in various culinary uses.
Care:
• Light: Prefers full sun, but can tolerate partial shade.
• Water: Requires regular watering, especially during the growing season, but the soil should be well-drained.
• Temperature: Thrives in warm climates (above 50°F) and is sensitive to frost.
• Soil: Well-draining, slightly acidic soil is ideal.
• Fertilizer: Apply a citrus-specific fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer).
• Pruning: Prune to remove dead or damaged branches and to maintain shape.
Uses:
Mandarin oranges are primarily grown for their fruit, which is consumed fresh, juiced, or used in desserts, salads, and other dishes. The fruit is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. The fragrant flowers also attract pollinators, making the tree beneficial in gardens.
Cuidados:
• Luz: Prefiere pleno sol, aunque tolera sombra parcial.
• Riego: Requiere riego regular, especialmente durante la temporada de crecimiento, pero el suelo debe estar bien drenado.
• Temperatura: Prosperan en climas cálidos (por encima de 10°C) y son sensibles a las heladas.
• Suelo: Prefiere suelos bien drenados y ligeramente ácidos.

Rambling incoming I apologise in advance 😭
☔ Its been raining all day so I walked to the filipino shop in my town and bought some stuff! I also bought ube jam because the nice auntie who was working there today recommended it to me and I would trust her with my life. 🤝🏽
I like the rain a lot and usually go outside to walk around when it rains. I went to the shop once while it was raining just after lockdown ended because that's where I ended up while wandering, so now it is a tradition of mine to go there any time it rains. :) Or when I am homesick for southeast asia lol
It's run by a group of older Filipino ladies and they are so so lovely we are friends and I love them. 💜 Also the shop sells stuff from all over southeast asia so it's very nostalgic and also like,,, the only place in town I can get snacks from home. 😭 Grocery stores here only sell Chinese, Japanese, and Korean stuff for the most part. And some South Asian stuff.
I live in a very yeehaw conservative area of Canada with not many minorities so it's nice to have a place that's kind of like a mini home place? Sometimes I go when I'm feeling homesick because the aunties remind me of the ones from the countries I stayed in growing up and then the snacks and stuff of course.
We trade desserts and food sometimes too because they gave me some cassava cake once and I felt bad so I brought them cíbā next time I went and then we just continued trading, so I kind of have them to thank for my sudden improvement in cooking/baking traditional foods 😅. They gave me bibingka and some leftovers just after last christmas because they found out I didn't celebrate since I'm here alone and I cried lmao.
okay sorry for rambling lol bye-bye 😭
there's a running joke here in the Philippines that you can find filipino almost EVERYWHERE around the world kasjdnajsd hahah but please it's really cute that there's a filipino shop there huhu 🥺 ube jam and bibingka are good so you can always trust Filipina aunties with food and even making sure you're included! for real it's the same here 💕
speaking of rain, damn I wish it could rain here I have more energy when it rains tbh im that kind of person hahah it's too damn hot I swear jksdnfdjksfn

Filipino egg pie! Similar to egg custard pie, though it tastes like flan. My family requested a filipino dessert for a traditional Christmas dinner, so 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
(Pay no mind to the whip cream flower made with a near empty can of whip to hide the dent made from dropping a spoon on it)
