Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

Not all moles live underground! Two species- the Pyrenean desman and the Russian desman- have evolved to live similarly to muskrats and other semi-aquatic rodents. They build burrows in the banks of ponds and rivers, hunt for fish and mollusks, and have even developed webbed feet to help them swim! Their long, elephant-like noses have also been adapted to help them detect chemicals from their prey in leaf litter, soil, and muddy banks.

I love how many different species of animals are basically just "big wet rat". Big wet rat planet

Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus). They share the family talpidae with moles and shrew-moles. Unlike their cousins, though, desmans decided they liked swimming better than digging and became semiaquatic animals, just like otters!

Russian Desman (Desmana moschata)

Conservation Status- Endangered

Habitat- Russia; Ukraine; Kazakhstan

Size (Weight/Length)- 500 g; 21 cm

Diet- Mollusks; Fish; Small amphibians; Insects

Cool Facts- The Russian desman is found only in river basins throughout northern Asia. Small groups of these moles gather together, often being unrelated, to dig out burrows alongside ponds and slow streams. The desmans strengthen their bonds by grooming each other, helping to insulate themselves against the chilly water. While they are suspected to have a highly complex social ladder, little research has been done on these little guys. Ponds provide plentiful amounts of food with crayfish being a favorite. Despite their thick body and relatively stiff tail, Russian desmans are excellent swimmers and can hold their breaths for several minutes.
