Having all of these new art platforms is all good any nice but im still missing what im really looking for and thats a new DESKTOP platform I dont want to have all of these apps on my phone Everything now is catered to small screens and I wish we could go back to desktop
#feeling real old right now#but i studied UI design and its easier for tech companies to make apps addicting than desktop

What art program do you use?
These are my top 3 programs in my art process! Ignore the name of the app folder. It helps with MY motivation to draw lmao
1. Procreate ($12.99 as of Feb 2024)
My main drawing program! Its so easy to use and the UI is simple. What really sold me to procreate is the default brushes and the time lapse! if you’d like I made a post a while back on the brushes i use for lineart! Sooooo worth the investment honestly. also you can animate on it too! but Procreate released Dreams recently. I’m just saving up for it oneday!
2. Easypose (FREE)
I love using this for composition, perspective and poses especially in group setting which I really struggle with. The proportions are very much anime but nothing anatomy studies can’t fix!! Also love that its free and isnt subscription based. Lil warning though the asset library is very limited. there are DLCs but they’re not as detailed as what you’d see in Magic poser and/or Clip studio. But still the basic shapes still help a lot! and I wish i can change the color and move the light but it only has the one light source.
3. Canva (Free & Paid Subscription)
THE Graphic Design for dummies!!! /lh No but fr it has helped me a lot in clutch especially for merch layout when I used to do a lot of conventions
Honorable Mentions for References that helps me a lot (aside from Pinterest):
Sketchfab.com - lots of 3D assets that you can rotate around and use as references especially when you can’t find the right stock photo!!! (Some of the Assets are free or you can buy them!)
Line of Action - been using this a lot for studies! (free or you can subscribe to them!)
Clipdrop Relight - When I’m struggling to light a scene. Very helpful for color studies cause you can set up 3 lights at once for that bisexual lighting~
#anon#narwhal speaks#art programs i use#man if i still have access to a computer/laptop…#i would be able to list cr4k3d photoshop#and i’d be more powerful lmaoooo#i wish i could be using Clip Studio#they have more stuff in there but i got really overwhelemed by the UI and i think it would be easier for me to use as a desktop app#rather than on an ipad#maybe oneday when i finally save enough for a really good laptop#cause i wanna learn how to 3D sculpt lmao

Having loud thoughts again, but you know what would be an absolutely baller idea for tumblr's layout? Everything being a full widget system, especially on the dashboard. I'm just using this as an example, but the old UI for deviantart, dated as it is now by website standards visually, worked off a widget like system where you had so much control over how your profile page was displayed. Certain elements/boxes could be dragged and placed on your page and then adjusted via preset options or through a bit of light coding shenanigans. Imagine that, but with the tumblr dashboard. Instead of being stuck in just one format, you could drag your navigation bar to the left or right or if you don't like that you could pull it up top instead. Or you could have a widget on the side bar like xkit does for tag tracking, or trending tags or just not have any of that on the dashboard. Or how about a widget purely to keep track of recent mutuals that will take you directly to a full list in one click or a widget listing your current que ect ect. All of these being movable pieces yeah? The main point being the ability for a user to rearrange their dashboard to their liking for the best personal navigation with the least amount of clicks. I think the idea of drag and dropping UI elements is taken for granted on most current social media sites even though it's extremely intuitive once you understand it's a feature that exists and how clunky things feel when you don't have it or it's taken away. There's personal website builders that already use widgets pretty frequently, so why not extend that to bigger websites that rely on plenty of consistent user navigation daily? Like imagine updates that could be about adding in highly requested new widgets or adjusting functionality of current widgets to perform better based on user feedback. I am not a coder so I don't know how difficult it would be to implement a robust widget system for a large scale social media website, but it's been on my mind for years now with trying out all kinds of beta art sites before. I really think something like that would be worth the investment for a place like tumblr and potentially cut down on a lot of discontent over layout changes.
#tumblr#tumblr layout#tumblr dashboard#dashboard#tumblr ui#ui design#ux desgin#personal#personal ramblings#long post#I think about this A LOT in some of my friend groups#talking about failed or struggling art websites mostly#widgets are so dope and they should be the standard for desktop layouts

In December of last year, @mabbees and I gave a talk at Nerd Nite Tokyo about a genre of games that have been called "desktop simulators" or "UI games"—essentially, a narrative fiction that takes place entirely within an interface, whether it be a smartphone, an old school Mac, or an imaginary interface in hypnospace.
We called these types of games "Interface Dramas," as in, "telling dramatic stories through the use of interfaces."
We think this should be its own defined genre and should be something games can be tagged as on Steam, just like "point-and-click adventure" games or "story-rich" games.
Check out the transcript of our talk—it goes over what interface dramas have in common with other adjacent genres such as interactive fiction, visual novels, simulation games, and alternate reality games, and what makes them different.

Games featured in the cover images are:
Terranova
Her Story
SIMULACRA
Hypnospace Outlaw
