Class of 09: The Flipside: Rewrite
Hey everyone! I’m a huge fan of Class of ‘09 and I’ve been thinking about how amazing the game could be with a bit of a revamp, especially after the direction the third game took. While I love the dark humor and over-the-top tone of the original, I feel like the third game didn’t really hit the mark for me (and I’m sure a lot of you feel the same way). So I’ve been working on an idea for a rewrite/remake, but with a fresh twist—turning it into an interactive YouTube series while keeping the same spirit and dark humor that made the first game so iconic.
Plot Overview:
The story would pick up after the Graduation ending, with Jecka as the main character. She’s been desperately trying to find a university that will accept her, not because she cares about school, but because (in her words), “I’m too fucking hot to work in a fast food restaurant, Nicole!” She calls Nicole at 3 AM, and together they find a “cool” fashion university.
It turns out Jecka has secretly loved fashion for years and even draws her own outfits every Wednesday when she barely talks to anyone—even Nicole! Most of the game would follow her experiences trying to survive at the fashion university, dealing with new classmates and the ridiculous world of high fashion.
While the cast is mostly new, Nicole, Ari, and Jeffrey all return:
Ari is now a confident head of the city Pride Parade and got into the university because of her work designing outfits for the parade.
Jeffrey is much less weird—he’s still into manga and anime, but his focus is on design and improving his art. He got into the university because his anime character designs have great anatomy.
Nicole got in by tracing Jecka’s work (I don't wanna get murdered by the fandom so I had to sneak her in the University SOMEHOW).
What Makes It Different:
Same Dark Humor: I want to keep the sharp one-liners and edgy humor from the first game. Think along the lines of the famous "I feel" conversation from the Nicole x Ari ending.
Character Growth: Jecka gets more depth, especially with her secret passion for fashion. Nicole will still be chaotic, but she’ll face new challenges trying to survive at a university where she doesn’t belong.
New Characters: Jecka’s new classmates would bring fresh dynamics and humor. Some could be rivals, others potential new friends.
5 Endings: I’ve outlined five endings, with a mix of success, rivalry, and even failure, all with the same darkly comedic twists that Class of '09 is known for.
Why Interactive YouTube?
I think the interactive YouTube format would be a cool way to bring this story to life. Viewers could make choices for Jecka and Nicole, leading to different outcomes—kind of like the original game but with the visual and comedic flair of a YouTube series. I’m aiming to create something that feels like it could be an official continuation, with all the humor, drama, and ridiculousness we love from the first game.
I’d love to hear your thoughts! Does this idea sound like something you’d watch? Any suggestions for what you'd want to see from a Class of ‘09 remake? Let me know!!!

Earlier I wrote down my thoughts on the other Zelda designs so let's do one for the new Zelda too.
Tumblr media
First the princess dress. When the trailer first played out, with Zelda stuck in her crystal, I thought this was going to be some kind of OoT remake in the toy style since the Zelda design is so similar. But upon closer inspection it's more like a mix between the ALbW design and OoT design, with some TP thrown in as well with the top shape. Which is a big minus for me; I like when the characters have their own visual identity so this is quite boring for me. But I guess it's good that it's a unique design at all at least, unlike ALbW Zelda or many of the Links.
Tumblr media
Then again the princess look is presumably not what she'll look like for the most of the game so it doesn't matter that much. As for her more casual look it's okay. I'm just not a fan of the toy art style with the simplified details and beady eyes but that aside this design communicates just fine that this is a Zelda on an adventure. The cut of the dress is new, the boots look nice and sturdy and the cape originally belonging to Link (?) is a super cute detail.

Hi Shima! You have a lot of Pokemon content on your page and I’m sorta curious about the like, world of Pokemon, so would you have any recommendations on what like game I should start with or what I should watch first? Thanks!
!!! YOOOOO OKAY I GOTCHU ANON. Buckle up bc my 20 years of being a Pokemon fan is about to kick in
As for where to start with the games--this is all really depending on how your own personal playstyle! Do you like games that are more easy going and light on plot? Or do you like ones with heavy amounts of story? Or do you prefer games that are a perfect blend of the two? Pokemon's got a mixed bag of all of the above so you really can't go wrong
If you're into that really nostalgia feel I'd recommend starting out with the first Pokemon game I ever played as a kid, which was Pokemon Emerald! You can actually play this for free by downloading a Gameboy Advance emulator and the Emerald ROM. I have a lot of fond memories of Emerald and it's still one of my favorite games to date. I actually even prefer Emerald over its remakes (Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire) bc it just doesn't quite hit the same lol. I think even without having played Emerald as a kid it'll just spark that nostalgic feeling? It's that kind of game, at least to me :")
Going off of that if you REALLY want to hit nostalgia central and start where it all began, Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen is also a good game to start out with. It's a remake of Pokemon Red/Blue, which were the first ever Pokemon games that were made. Personally I'm not a super huge Gen 1 fan bc I feel like it's been WAY overdone at this point (it's had two remakes already) but if you've never played a Pokemon game again it's definitely a good starting point. It's barely got any plot so it's really a game you can just dive into and enjoy without focusing too hard on the story. AND as an added bonus, Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver is the direct sequel to Gen 1 (and a remake of the original Gold/Silver/Crystal) so I'd definitely play that one as well, it's lots of fun!
Of course I will also recommend Pokemon Black/White and Black 2/White 2, which is generation 5 and my FAVORITE mainline Pokemon games of all time. BW released right before the transition to the 3D games so it still has sprite art. It's a GORGEOUS game honestly and I think it's really well balanced with story VS gameplay. It's got great characters and fantastic design elements (with everything honestly like the Pokemon designs are great, the character designs are great, the city/town designs are great, etc) and the most KICKASS soundtrack ever (looking at you Driftveil City AKA Toothless dancing meme music). I could go on and on and on about Gen 5 for hours lmao I really hold it near and dear to my heart. Also it's one of the very few games that actually has a sequel which I LOVE. BW2 takes place two years after BW and I love the story and character progression 🥰
Shouting out Pokemon Platinum as well, I know it's a huge fan favorite and honestly I also love it very much!! Platinum came out before BW did so it's got that early DS era feel to it. It's got a decent plot and classic fun gameplay elements. Also Pokemon Legends Arceus which ties directly into Platinum as its prequel (but you should play Platinum first? I know it's confusing lol). PLA is SUPER fucking fun, it's got a completely different gameplay style and mechanic than regular Pokemon games, and it ties in with Platinum so well.
And to my last few recommendations -
Pokemon Sun and Moon!! There's mixed feelings about this one from a lot of people but it's one of my personal favorites...I think people dislike that it's so plot heavy, there's a LOT of dialogue even when starting the game so if you're not into that I wouldn't go with SM. But I LOVE games that are heavy with plot and SM just does it so well. The characterization is really well done and I love watching Lillie go through her development arc 🤧 But yeah it's SM NOT Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon which are like. The same games but Worse. USUM took SM's plot and stomped all over it so I would not go for those lol
And, of courseeee. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet! These are the most recent mainline games to release and ohhh my god. Is the game laggy and bugged out as hell? Yes. Is it also fucking FANTASTIC and has made me cry multiple times? ALSO yes. If you don't mind occasional shitty graphics then please please PLEASE play SV. The open world aspect is a ton of fun, the new Pokemon designs are so charming, the characters are wonderful, and the STORY??? The plot literally blew my socks off the first time I played it. SV endgame you will always be the king of my heart. It's definitely heavier than any previous Pokemon game and it had me reeling for DAYS after. The story is just. So so so good. And we get a continuation of the story kicking ass in the DLC. I love SV to death it really redeemed Pokemon after the disaster that was gen 8 for me (and it's REALLY fun to shiny hunt in).
And LAST but certainly not least. My favorite Pokemon game of all time period ever in the history of Pokemon. Not a mainline game but a side/spinoff game--Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky!! If you want the classic Pokemon experience I probably wouldn't start with this since it's so different from the mainline games but I'd 10000% play it after finishing your first Pokemon game. It's a dungeon crawler, you get to BE a Pokemon, the music is phenomenal, the gameplay is phenomenal, the story is PHENOMENAL, everything about it is incredible and I will love this game until the day I die. I CANNOT recommend it enough. It's so so SO good and it means so much to me I can't even. Please play PMD Sky this goes to everyone who hasn't played it I prommy it's worth it
So basically:
Easy games with no/light plot: FRLG, Emerald, HGSS
Games with a perfect blend of actual gameplay and plot: BW/B2W2, Platinum, PLA
Games that hit HEAVY with plot/storyline: SM, SV, PMD Sky
Honestly you really cannot go wrong no matter where you start out. Even if it's with one of the games I DIDN'T personally recommend, all the mainline games have their own unique charm and each generation has its die hard fans (UNOVA GANG RISE). I've played all of them and they're all enjoyable!
As for the anime, my personal recommendations are the XY saga and the SM saga! The SM saga is my ultimate favorite, it's really cute and charming and fun, with some heavier plot arcs sprinkled in so it's a good blend between lighthearted stuff and more serious story. XY is VERY plot-heavy especially in the latter part, there's a lot of character development and crazy stuff going on, so I'd go for that one if you want to get hit hard with Feels. I haven't watched as much of the anime so I'm sure other people would recommend other seasons (I know the original saga, the Hoenn saga and the DP saga are fan favorites).
I'd also recommend watching the sub instead of the dub,, especially if you haven't grown up watching the Pokemon anime like me the dub is VERY hit or miss. I prefer subs as well bc the dub actually cuts out a LOT of stuff? I know for SM they had fun extra little bits at the beginning and ending of each episode that the dub just. Didn't include. For some reason? Like they'd cut out entire scenes. Idk. It's up to you either way tho ^^
And that is my introduction to Pokemon list.........if anybody has anything to add feel free! These are just my personal recommendations based off of what I like so naturally not everyone will agree lol. If you have any questions anon don't hesitate to ask, I'm always down to talk Pokemon. And I hope you have lots of fun playing whichever game you decide to go with!!

hi.
I was just thinking and one of the most confusing things in RE, Leon’s hair color. in the OG games, Leon’s hair is brown, but then OG RE4 comes into the mix, which adds dirty blonde, but RE6 brings brown back in, along with the movies like vendetta- but then the RE2 and RE4 remakes make him blonde- it’s so confusing- like, is it blonde? Is it brown?- ik it’s probably a case of his hair getting darker as he gets older but it still continues to confused me
Besides that, i absolutely love your art and think it is so so so pretty, have a gift.
Tumblr media
im so glad you love my art and thank you for the little gift🥹is that the man the myth the legend ethan fucking winters!!!!!!! can i eat him!!!!!!
IM SO GLAD YOU MENTIONED HIS HAIR COLOR!!!!!! I LOVE THINKING ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!!!!!
I think in leon‘s first and original design, he was made to be a brunette. but i also think that after re2og, they wanted him to be dirty blonde. I‘m someone with dirty dirty blonde hair-and his hair kinda acts the same as mine. in brighter lighting his hair is much a lighter blonde-but when hes in a darker setting its brown. And dirty blonde hair also turns browner when wet or greasy. (so if it looks darker to me i just write it off as his mental health is getting bad :p) It tends to be much lighter and fluffier when just washed or dried. re6 leons hair is much lighter and that weird yellowish color that dirty blonde hair is.
i think he ends up looking like his hair is darker than it is a lot of the time due to the naturally dark settings most resident evil games have. i am a dirty blonde leon truther-but with darker roots.

Link's Awakening HD!!! I love the art style of this game a lot and I hope the developers continue to make more HD remakes of the older games! As someone who played the oracle games before this one, this game improved a lot on playability and design so it was really nice breath of fresh air to not struggle against some of the rough aspects of those games (hardhat beetles). I wish I could've loved this game more, but as much as I enjoyed this game I still had issues with it (same with every Zelda game honestly :/).
The stickers are from the Homemade in Hyrule zine and were designed by Mirarasol
Writing typed below! (plus extra commentary in my summary)
Rating: 8.3 Played: Spr. 2023 Port: Switch

KIRBY!

I really love the nightmare combo final boss
love the orchestra music
seagull marin?
love the whole dream concept
love the wind fish design
Summary:
What an incredible remake. The opening and ending animations, the smooth gameplay, the amazing new remodels, wow. This was so charming. I am angry about the racist bosses and that did affect my score and I am just not excited to see them again when I play DX. (I know this is an issue throughout the whole Zelda franchise and even in my favorite games like OOT it frustrates me, esp since later games made some of these problems worse. But the 2D games were a lot better about their designs so it was just upsetting to see this in Link's Awakening, especially since this is a remake from 2019 and no one on the developers team thought it was a good idea to change the racist designs). Although I haven't played the original LA, I can say from my experience with the oracle games that this is an incredible improvement. Some enemies are absolutely the worst to fight in the pixel games and everything was just smoothed over and so much more enjoyable. I really hope they do remake the oracle games like this one because they're so fun and silly that I know my ratings of the game would increase with a contemporary redesign. Also what a cool story. Link, half dead, experiencing a dream world filled with early Nintendo figures. It's so unique and silly, I really enjoyed exploring the whole world. Nintendo should remake more old games and cut their shit out with these damn racist designs.

Piece descriptions below readmore.
I. SEALED CHAMBER | Music by Error Sparrow (Vapor) | Digital Art by DarthButcher
Musician Notes: Sealed Chamber is an instrumental ode to the legendary Pokemon of the Gen III pokemon games (Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald), specifically Regirock, Regice and Registeel. It's an ambient, dungeon synth-kinda track meant to capture the mystique of the elaborate quest through Hoenn's secret areas - undersea, underground and elsewhere - that the player undertakes to find all three Regis. The instrumentation is 100% Pokemon RSE soundfont (with some effects and such thrown in).
Artist Notes: Digital watercolor and ink pen using Adobe Fresco on iPad. May has heard the legend of three bionic beasts and finally thinks she has come upon the cave of legend. She has searched far and wide across Hoenn to try to find the entrance and after a series of trials, her quest may prove fruitful. What she doesn’t know is that while she searches for them, they stand alert to her presence ready to pounce when the moment is right. Stylized with inspiration from Ken Sugimori for a watercolor aesthetic, my first time working with the medium.
II. FUCHSIA ZONE | Music by ZeroJanitor | GBA 2D+3D Gif by Aaron (AReallyFrog)
Musician Notes: Inspired by the translucent pink Game Boy Advance model, officially known as the Fuchsia model. Instrument samples are taken from Sonic Advance 3, and the voice samples are from the LingoJam robot voice generator.
Artist Notes: I created this little animation by exporting the frames from Blender, drawing over them in Aseprite, and then exporting them as a gif. I think the gif struggles a little but I’m happy to have gotten to try combining 2d and 3d animation!
If you’re interested in homebrew games for the gameboy family there are a few collections of roms (.gb/.gbc/.gba) on my itch page I try to keep up to date.
III. WHEN THE LEVEE REMAKES | Music by Joey Puricelli (CaptHayfever) | Watercolor + Cross-Stitch Mixed Media by nyankat
Musician Notes: Arr. for voice, jaw harp (x2), shaker, wood handles, bongos, drumkit, & Casio PK-5.
I had the opening lines of the first verse looping in my head for weeks before I finally had time to hash out the rest of it. There really were a metric buttload of remakes on this system; this song cites 38 (though maybe I’m cheating to include Game & Watch Gallery) & that’s just where I stopped researching because I thought I had too much. My nickname for Kirby in verse 3 came from the American NiD commercials, which for some reason used the theme song to the 1960s spy show Danger Man.
Artist Notes: Watercolor on paper and Aida cloth, cross-stitch. As soon as Joey laid out his idea I was inspired to do a mixed-media piece. This is basically a reimagining of the old Pokemon Kanto intro screen, in a forest clearing, with one side cross-stitch/“low res” and the other watercolor/“high res.” I asked Joey what else he might end up referencing besides Pokemon and went from there. (I presented him with a word map before starting the actual design; this piece was an absolute boatload of work. But I’m pleased to say I captured his intended vibe on the first try!) The full piece depicts Nidorino, Kirby, Piranha Plant, and Samus (low res) vs. Gengar, Meta Knight, Baby Mario on Yoshi, and a Metroid (high res). Let me tell ya, stitching on Aida that you’ve already painted is very difficult! But it made for a really cool effect. Thank you for the collaboration (and your patience lol), Joey!
IV. MY INTERNAL BATTERY HAS RUN DRY | Music by Leo ArcanaXIX | Photography by DarthButcher
Musician Notes: My concept for this was to sample sounds from doing a GBA cartridge internal battery surgery and use those sounds as instruments. I took inspiration for the form of the song itself from "Clockwork" from Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, a GBA game with both an internal battery and a banger soundtrack.
Artist Notes: Shot on a Sony a7IV, Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN, 70mm, 1/40s, f/7.1, ISO 1000. Nothing says cartridge repair more than actually dismantling a cartridge and beginning to conduct surgery. Utilizing photography with a strong key light, contrast of the system on one side and additional cartridges behind it, and some mild post-production to bring out the colors, this piece tells a story of frustration that a beloved game may have seen its last days.
V. LIQUID CRYSTAL | Music by Revolver Project | Digital Art by Marcus Bower (SpriteDude)
Musician Notes: This song began with the intent to write a dark-step inspired drum & bass track using the Game Boy Advance internal synthesis. I set out researching the best homebrew Tracker/DAW for the console, and discovered that my ancient flash cartridge wasn't fully compatible with the majority of them. As a solution, I used a branch of LSDJ which maintained compatibility with the GoombaGB wrapper for GBA.
I opted for a harsh and bright industrial guitar style to compliment the harsh synth and percussion sampling of the GBA, which may sound familiar to older Revolver Project fans. All of the percussion and the majority of the synths were originally voiced using the GBA's internal synth and sample abilities. They were then heavily edited on a PC DAW, into the final sounds you hear. Notable exceptions include some bass sounds, which were created using a semi-modular Behringer Neutron.
I hope after listening to this, you'll be inspired to fire up a GBA and play your favorite Metroid or maybe a racer. Just remember to turn a light on if you're playing on an original model, don't let that LCD stay dark. ☻
Artist Notes: AI was pretty much the perfect match for me, as we’ve worked together many times in the past and we always seem to be on the same wavelength. In fact, he suggested “neon lights and cyberpunk” for the theme of the piece after I had already started drawing just that. Other than that, it’s pretty much just a fast-paced super-foreshortened actiony sci-fi piece. The guy is just a random cyberpunk dude I made up, and the drones are supposed to kinda look like metroids.
VI. ADVENTURE'S END | Music by Monstrman | Acrylic Art by nyankat
Musician Notes: I wanted to make a song that really captured the finality of finishing a game on the GBA. In reality it’s more about the experience of completing all your games in general, but since it’s GBA themed I added some flavor. The intro/outro was written on my guitar first, then I made the rest in my DAW.
Artist Notes: Acrylic on canvas, 8 in. x 8 in. I listened to a very early draft of Tim’s piece, which reminded me of the ending screen of Mega Man 2, where he walks away through different landscapes. This evolved into the piece it is now, with a person facing away from the viewer with a guitar over his back, next to a GBA set on a table and showing the message “Thank you!” I’m not particularly strong in figure drawing, so I asked Tim to pose as a reference, and I think that turned out quite well. I also asked him if he wanted the GBA or the curtains a specific color: The GBA is silver like the one he had growing up, and the curtains are OG GBA blurple. Thank you for the collaboration, Tim!

Okay, serious question professional critics have been and will be debating for decades to come, but I'm sure you know better than them: Are games art? This is not question of quality-most art in all forms sucks-the argument how we define art and its purpose, function. Some argue games themselves aren't, but may contain art within them. That in a narrative driven game, the story may be art, but that's seperate from the game itself. Would a puzzle count as art? Would Solitaire? A slot machine?
I keep trying to answer this question and then I keep putting it off cause I want to get it perfect and then it inevitably gets lost and I never respond so lets just go for it. Yes, Videos games are art, if we can identify any medium as art. The only arguments I can see that would deny video games as an art form would also dismiss Film as an art form. Now there are many differnet ways that a Video Game can be art, its a very multi facaded medium, but a few include
Story, the obvious one. Disco Elysium, Planescape Torment, the Baldur's Gate Series, Fallout New Vegas, the Witcher Series, Dragon Age, I have no Mouth and I must Scream, Legacy of Kaine, Undertale, God of War, are all good examples of this. (I like RPGS)
Mixing Mechanics and Story- Portal, Silent Hill 2, Bioshock, Deux Ex, Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, Walking Dead, all of these are examples of narrative and story being mered on a fundemental level. The Soulsbourn Games by fromsoft do a really good job of illustrating some very buddhist themes in there mechanics.
Pushing the medium forward. Resident Evil 4 is a fucking stupid game but its incredible genre invovations and the fact its fun as fuck pushed the entire medium forward. Same with Dead Space, Half Life (which is also you now..good), Monkey Island,
Mechanics as a way of viewing systems, or to have a vibe. Mechanics can be used to make you understand the world different from a system level, Paper's Please is a great example of this, a lot of Civlization Games or TTRPGS do this, Far Cry tries to do this. Resident Evil 2 Remake really does capture a sort of panic which is very impressive, Princeo of Persia, the original Thief Games, Sympathy of the Night
Video games as expression. This Dragon Cancer, No More Heroes, Braid, Even Postal, an uttelry vile game does express a certain Alt Right attitude (fuck garbage)
Video games as system design, just the brilliance of seeing a bunch of systems override together.
Mood Pieces. The Zelda games are masters of this, but also Shadow of the Collosius,
Purely mechanical Design. Doom is a great example of this, but Missile Command, even tetris has a lot of soviet aethetics in there
I think a puzzle counts as art, or has the potential to count as art, if it can change the way your mind thinks. A good puzzle doesn't just have you solve it, your brain twists around in order to change the way you view things. Like Braid requires you to like...unstuck your brain to understand the puzzles, its incredible
SO yes, games are art....but not all games are good art

More Advance Wars Reboot rambling!!
I just finished the AW2 campaign! So i have more thoughts! (Possible Spoilers below!)
-Sensei's Theme's did NOT need to SLAP that hard!!!!
-Colin's co power song slaps too.
-I also really like Flak's, tbh.
-Adder's features seem very "round" compared to how jagged his original incarnation is. I think it was so he fit in the style better, but his vibe is definitely a lil different (not that im complaining! His movements are so smooth, and that gives its own kind of appeal). His CO power animation is A Lot, haha.
-Hawk's theme feels a little weird... but i wasnt really a big fan of his theme in the first place.
-I'm sorta mixed on Jess's redesign and theme remix. She had a specific, masculine vibe i really liked in AW2 and AWDS especially, and now she has a very strong Power Lesbian feel in a different direction. Which is good! I still like it, but it's different. It feels like they decided on making her pretty, which wasnt really her thing? I think part of her appeal to me was she was pretty androgynous, and that isnt there in this design. her theme Has all the parts I like, but has some additional things that I think i just gotta get used to. 🤔
-What the heck is Sturm doing with ANOTHER special last boss theme? Geez, this game has so much music!
-I also forgot how insane Sturm's stats were in the AW2 campaign. my god, this guy.
-I'm glad they animated Hawke blowing Sturm up, lmao.
-Oooooh New design room pieces 👀 I can make the 3v1 final boss map i always dreamed of when i was 13, lmao! This is awesome~
This remake makes me insanely happy. The past week has been pretty productive cuz the Brain chemicals released from playing has been doing me good for my mood (though they are tapering off now. Good things dont last forever!)
Ultimately, i do think the Voice acting was probably the weakest part. The awkwardness i mentioned in my last post aside, It still feels very weird for Andy to be sounding like OG Ash Ketchum (Veronica Taylor), and a lot of the voices arent what I originally imagined them to be. But that's sorta expected when a game has had 20 years to kinda fester in your brain :P
I really hope they remake Dual Strike in the future, or even just had Updates/DLC that added new stuff! I honestly miss the units from Days of Ruin, cuz the Anti-tanks, gunboats, rebalanced Carriers, and bike infantry were awesome, and it'd be really neat to see how they interact with the older cast.
I still gotta go back and 100% the campaigns, buy all the characters, art, and music, and maybe do some war room maps. Lots to do still :V.

Kirby Series Retrospective Thoughts
I am all done! Well, mostly anyways, but we will talk about that. I beat all the mainline Kirby games from Dream Land to Robobot, so first lets rank those:
Super Star (Ultra) - Played this one as a kid and it holds up. Pitch perfect balance of everything. Great copy abilities, multiple moves per ability, local coop, lots of modes. I had the most fun playing this one and it almost felt like every other game was good or bad based on its proximity to Super Star. Kirby feels his best here.
Triple Deluxe - Maybe it was because I had such low expectations, but I was blown away by this title. I really enjoyed the variety of gameplay gimmicks and the use of 3D, plus the new powers.
Planet Robobot - Honestly this game felt like DLC for Triple Deluxe with a downgraded framerate once you get past the robot gimmick, which is better than Hypernova but doesn't make the game for me. I almost hesitate to even rank these games separately but I definitely had more fun playing Triple Deluxe
Squeak Squad - I did really have a hard time putting this game down and it is highly underrated to me, if lacking a bit of its own identity.
Return to Dream Land - Again, a little on the generic side, but felt like a nice evolution of what Squeak Squad established with having lots of levels with optional collectibles. Funny though that Squeak Squad mastered having fun unlockable tied to collectibles and no other game managed to recapture that exactly. World 6 slaps. A bit generic,
Nightmare in Dream Land (Adventure) - Frustrating only having 1 move per copy ability, but makes sense with it being a remake of the original. Still a pretty fun time all things considered.
64: The Cystal Shards - I don't like the way Kirby feels to move and fight in this game but the ability mixing is very fun, even if I settled on beating the game using Darth Maul's lightsaber exclusively (which was a lot of fun)
Dream Land - Honestly surprisingly fun and "Kirby feeling" despite the lack of copy abilities, just a bit on the short side of course.
Dream Land 3 - Hated this one. I didn't like the level design. I didn't like the "pick a friend and hope it was the right one" system of forcing you to replay levels arbitrarily. Felt like a step backwards from the gameplay and variety of Super Star. Likely would've enjoyed more if I had only played Dream Land 1/2 beforehand. Did not finish. Cute art style. Hated how Glooey steals your health only to never do anything useful. I don't enjoy the concept of mixing powers and friends because it feels more like playing optimally is the normal experience and picking wrong is both random and punishing.
Dream Land 2 - I did beat the main game (not the secret boss), but it was rough and I had to turn on invincibility to power through. It simply isn't fun to me. I do not like the friend system. Rick makes me fall in bottomless pits. Kine is slow and cumbersome out of water. The bird slaps though. Only a handful of copy abilities and most of them suck, even if you do get four different version of each ability. The level design feels monotonous and straightforward. Feels distinctly less "Kirby" even than Dream Land 1.
Amazing Mirror - My absolute least favorite, I could only get about an hour in before calling it quits. A baffling game. The level design seems to be designed intentionally screwy to force you to play multiplayer and split up. Everyone calls this a "metroidvania" but every other Metroidvania in the world gives you permanent upgrades and doesn't end you back to the hub world for picking the wrong door. Imagine if Hollow Knight just killed you for taking the left door instead of the right door, and that is how this game felt for me to play. It's not even necessarily that I just "dislike" this game, I don't see it as a genuinely playable game in single player. I must have been missing something because I cannot imagine anyone being interested in seeing Kirby turned into a life or death Monty Hall problem over and over and over. Missile is a fun copy ability though. If you are an Amazing Mirror fan, then please see this as me experiencing a "disconnect" with this game rather than an attack on your interests.
All in all, I really enjoyed the Kirby series. It was a lot easier and more nostalgic than doing the Mega Man series, although I learned a lot more there. Also, it is shocking how many Kirby "spinoffs" there are. At this point, the main series almost feels like the spinoff itself.
Also, very scary how Dream Land, Dream Land 2 (even if I hate it lol), Amazing Mirror, Nightmare in Dream Land, Squeak Squad, Canvas Curse, Mass Attack, Epic Yarn, Triple Deluxe, original Return to Drema Land, Robobot, Rainbow Curse, plus the many 3DS spinoff eshop games are about to die in just a month! And some of those eshop games are literally digital only, like Blowout Blast. Huge blow to games conservation when the 3DS/Wii U eshops go down :( thank god for so-called "pirates". Imagine if someone had rescued materials from the Library of Alexandria or the Hollywood fire and been branded a thief. Obviously playing video games for free and preserving important historical documents aren't equally noble, but it genuinely scares me to think about how fleeting my favorite art form is.
So what next? My next series is most likely going to be No More Heroes since I can play the two Wii originals on my Wii U natively and I actually own the third game on Switch and have been meaning to play it, and the games aren't too long.
First, I am still wrapping up Kirby, to be fair. I may do Meta Knightmare and similar modes in Super Star, Triple Deluxe, Robobot, Return to Dream Land, etc.
I could play any of the spinoffs, which Blowout Blast seems to be the most appetizing of, but I could also sink some time into Air Ride (I actually hadn't booted it up yet as part of this operation since I am already fairly familiar)
But also in between series, I want to read some comic books and do some twitch streams with my new PC. Fake Fan Alex is my twitch and youtube handle, shameless plug.
Also! I am going to try the Switch demos splitscreen to determine if any of them warrant immediate purchase, or if I want to wait for a steeper discount, which could be a fun way of waiting to determine when my second Kirby phase will be.

Trying to disguise its shit as a rose makes it worse.) *Little Kitty, Big City by Double Dagger Studio (Definitely intend to finish this cute little game.) *Mystic Pillars by Holy Cow Production (Nifty puzzle game that I intend to finish.) *Tales of Eternia by Namco (Revisited. Still holds up so far in my honest opinion.) *Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2 by Crystal Dynamics (This game seems like it's going to be extremely rough, even by the LoK series' standards.) *Breath of Fire by Capcom (Not a whole lot I can say, but there's certainly a lot of jank, and the translation is absolute ASS.) *Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages by Flagship (Didn't get too far, but it's interesting.) *INSCRYPTION (Has my attention.)

Shows/Anime I started but have not yet finished: *ReBoot (Reliving this old classic series. It's amazing how it starts out as a simple Saturday morning cartoon show, then gradually starts getting darker and following story arcs that are actually pretty well-written.) *Word of Honor (Ep. 3) (Fascinating show.) *Yu Yu Hakusho (Ep. 29) (Very much intend to get back to this. This show is still amazing in many good ways, despite a few early flaws here and there.) *Migi & Dali (Ep. 3) (Definitely interesting... Not sure where it's going, but I am intrigued enough to see how it plays out.) *NieR Automata (Ep. 3) (So far, so good.) *Frieren (Ep. 4) (Really need to get back to this.) *Tales of Zestiria (Only watched one episode so far, and it was all right. What are the odds it'll be better than the game?) *March Comes in Like a Lion (Ep. 10) (A little boring sometimes, but I do like its lead a lot.)

Creating another digital artwork felt like revisiting an old friend. This time, I decided to delve into the vibrant world of anime, specifically a classic that has captivated fans for decades. My latest piece is a fan art of Lum Invader, a character from the anime "Urusei Yatsura." This artwork is inspired by the 2022 remake of the series, which breathes new life into Lum's iconic design. The vibrant colours and attention to detail truly bring Lum to life in a way that honours the original while also feeling fresh and modern.
Lum Invader is not just any character; she is an extra-terrestrial from the planet Oniboshi. Known for her striking appearance and captivating personality, Lum has become a beloved figure in the anime community. In my artwork, I aimed to capture her essence, focusing on the details that make her so unique. In my artwork, I aimed to capture her essence, focusing on the details that make her so unique, bringing her to life in a way that pays homage to her origins while also giving her a contemporary twist.
The first thing that catches the eye in my artwork is Lum's golden-brown eyes. They have a certain sparkle to them, a mix of mischief and warmth that is characteristic of her personality. Her eyes are framed by cyan hair that cascades down to her shoulders. The hair colour was the trickiest part to get right. In the 2022 anime, Lum's hair features various value tones, creating a rich, dynamic look. This complexity is a stark contrast to the 1981 anime, where her hair was an all-cyan colour for simplicity.
Getting the hair right took hours of blending and shading. Each strand needed to reflect light in just the right way to capture the multi-tonal effect. But in the end, it was worth it. Lum's hair in my artwork is vibrant and full of life, just like her character. The final result was a stunning representation of Lum's iconic hairstyle, adding depth and dimension to the character. The intricate details in her hair truly brought the artwork to life, capturing Lum's essence in a unique and captivating way.
Lum's attire is another iconic aspect of her design. She is almost always seen in her signature strapless yellow tiger-striped bikini with matching boots. This outfit not only highlights her voluptuous figure but also gives her a wild, untamed look. In my artwork, I made sure to capture the intricate details of her attire, from the stripes on her bikini to the folds in her boots. Each element adds to her exotic beauty. I wanted to portray her as a confident and daring woman who embraces her unique style.
Lum's physical appearance is not just about her beauty, though. It's also about her identity as an Oni alien. Like all of her kind, she has pointy ears and small yellow horns. These features set her apart from the human characters in the anime and highlight her extra-terrestrial origins. In my artwork, I paid special attention to these details, ensuring that her ears and horns were just right. They add an element of fantasy to her design, reminding viewers that Lum is not from our world.
Lum's story is as captivating as her appearance. She was chosen to represent her kind in a game of tag against a human named Ataru Moroboshi to determine the fate of planet Earth. After Ataru defeats her, she misunderstands his victory chants as a proposal to marry her. Thus, she forces herself into his life, becoming Ataru's loving "wife" much to his chagrin. This misunderstanding and the ensuing chaos are central to the humour and charm of "Urusei Yatsura."
Lum's personality is a delightful mix of sweetness, innocence, and loyalty. She is a good-natured girl who genuinely cares for Ataru, despite his incessant addiction to flirting. Her jealousy and hot temper often lead to humorous situations, but they also show how deeply she cares for him. In my artwork, I aimed to capture this aspect of her personality. Her eyes and smile reflect her kind nature, while her pose hints at her playful, spirited character.
Despite her exotic beauty and popularity with the boys at Tomobiki High School, Lum remains devoted to Ataru. She refutes all advances from her admirers, showing her unwavering loyalty. This aspect of her character adds depth to her personality, making her more than just a pretty face. In my artwork, I tried to convey this loyalty through her expression and posture. She looks confident and sure of herself, a reflection of her commitment to Ataru.
Lum's intelligence is another key aspect of her character. She is very smart, but her understanding of life on Earth is comparable to that of a kindergartener. This naivety leads to many humorous situations but also makes her endearing. She doesn't understand why the other boys at school think Ataru is not good enough for her, but she cares about their well-being. In my artwork, I aimed to capture this innocence. Her wide eyes and bright smile reflect her childlike wonder and curiosity.
Working on this artwork was a labour of love. Each stroke of the brush and each blend of colour was done to bring Lum to life. I wanted to create a piece that not only looked good but also captured the essence of her character. The 2022 remake of "Urusei Yatsura" provided a rich source of inspiration, with its detailed and dynamic portrayal of Lum. This project allowed me to explore my artistic abilities and push myself to new creative heights.
As I stepped back to look at the finished piece, I felt a sense of satisfaction. Lum Invader stood on the screen, vibrant and full of life. Her golden-brown eyes sparkled with mischief, her cyan hair flowed gracefully around her shoulders, and her tiger-striped bikini highlighted her exotic beauty. The pointy ears and small yellow horns reminded viewers of her extraterrestrial origins, while her confident pose reflected her unwavering loyalty to Ataru. She was truly a sight to behold.
Creating this artwork was not just about replicating a character from an anime. It was about capturing the essence of Lum Invader, a character who has captivated fans for decades. Through her appearance, personality, and story, Lum represents the charm and humour that makes "Urusei Yatsura" such a beloved series. I hope that my artwork does justice to her character and brings joy to those who see it. I hope that my artwork does justice to her character and brings joy to those who see it.
In conclusion, creating fan art for Lum Invader was a journey of rediscovering a classic character. It allowed me to explore the intricate details of her design and personality, bringing her to life in a new way. Through this process, I gained a deeper appreciation for the artistry and creativity that goes into creating characters like Lum. I hope that this artwork serves as a tribute to her enduring appeal and the joy she brings to fans around the world. [Review] Panzer Dragoon Remake (PS4)
Tumblr media
A competent, if barebones, Unity remake.
I played Gamera 2000 on a stream recently, which is—among other things—an excellent Panzer Dragon clone on PSX. It got me in the mood for more of Sega's landmark rail shooter series, so I'm starting with the 2020 remake of the original game. This was handled by Polish studio MegaPixel and published by their parent Forever Entertainment; oddly, Sega's name is almost nowhere to be seen here apart from a copyright notice on the title screen.
I did already play Panzer Dragoon, as it was included as a bonus inside Orta, the fourth game in the series. But this feels very different. I remarked on the original game's high difficulty, whereas I didn't have as much trouble with this (apart from a couple of deaths late in the game). Maybe running at a higher framerate helped, or else there were some other tweaks.
Tumblr media
Either way, the most notable difference is in the graphics, so let's address that. The higher fidelity of the visuals does a lot of favours to the design work of Manabu Kusunoki who created much of the Mœbius and Nausicäa-inspired look of the original game, helped by the talented artists at MegaPixel who brought this world design into HD. The same can't be said for all the environments, which can have a shiny, fake look to them that you sometimes get in Unity assets. A high level of detail helps to flesh out the world but it can also cause visibility problems with enemies, which wasn't an issue with the simple, blocky graphics of the Saturn game. Overall it's a mixed bag.
The game itself still works as well as it did in 1995. You have a rapid fire shot, good for focusing on weak points or destroying projectiles, and a homing lock-on shot, good for groups of enemies or multi-target bosses. You can spin your view to different quadrants in response to blips on your radar, which is still not my favourite mechanic but it works just fine. The whole thing is over in about an hour—including cutscenes!—making for a short but sweet bout of arcadey action, although I didn't test if easy mode locked you out of half the game in this version.
Tumblr media
After clearing the game, you get access to a "Pandora's Box" feature, an idea added in the PC port and sequels which houses game modifiers (many of them returning from the original), including a Wizard Mode-like turbo feature, autofire, god mode, stage select, etc. but not the score attack stage Episode 0, which is unlocked via a different code. The timing on these codes is quite strict, by the way. Also in this menu is a concept art gallery which nicely shows the work the team put into updating the designs, but sadly it doesn't include the captivating Mœbius illustrations seen in the Saturn game's credits and Japanese cover art!
It's misses like this and the environment design that make this fall a little short for me as a remake. If you're not going to truly create the definitive version of the game, then why bother? (Also they should ideally include a playable form of the original game for posterity.) I am a massive Grinch about remake culture so forgive me, but I would much rather have seen this team create an entirely new sequel with more modern design sensibilities and features. It seems like they can handle it. Instead they've done another remake of Sega's House of the Dead and were announced to also be remaking Panzer Dragoon Zwei. Humbug, I say! Well, next for me is the Saturn version of said sequel because old games are still perfectly playable. So there.

Nintendo Direct Thoughts! Part 1
I was super hyped for this direct but as the past has shown with these things I didn't want to get my hopes up. I knew they would show something Zelda related and that was pretty much the extent of my excitement. But boy was I wrong. This was probably one of the best directs in the past I don't even know. After it was over I didn't know what to think and needed a bit of time to gather my thoughts. So here we are. I thought this would be a nice little (rather long) first post for my page. And this is definitely something new for me. So here we go!
Pikmin 4
Tumblr media
I have never played any of the Pikmin series but I can definitely see the appeal. These cute little strange characters running around, plus the graphics look great and it looks like tons of fun and man that adorable little pikmin dog (is it a dog?? a alien bug dog?? idk still cute though). I probably won't be picking this up because it's not my thing but very excited for those that are fans.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 ex Pass Vol. 3 and Vol. 4
Tumblr media
Never played the series but have thought about giving it a shot a few times here and there because I like the art style and of course anything with crazy designed weapons. My extent of knowledge on turn based RPGs still simply only lies with Pokemon (lol). So ultimately I will have to pass on this one. Excited for the fans of course!
Samba De Amigo: Party Central
Tumblr media
Alright so I don't have much to say about this game. From my brief research on it, it's a Sega game and it was on the WII. It reminds me of a mix between dance dance revolution and guitar hero but with maracas. I like the vibrant colors and it would be a fun party game, but yeah definite pass. So moving on!
Fashion Dreamer
Tumblr media
Cool art style but again not for me
Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania
Tumblr media
Okay guys it's time to be honest with you...I have never played any of the Dead Cell Series. Yes Yes I know it's a great series, it has won awards and obviously super popular. The art style is fantastic with so much color. It's heavily inspired by classic side scrollers with enemies that seem unbeatable after the 100th attempt. And now I guess they're doing a crossover DLC. So I might just have to pick this up soon!
Torn: Identitiy
Tumblr media
Was this announced in a prior direct?? Either way Tron is a great franchise, great movies. Yeah won’t be playing this one.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
Tumblr media
So my understanding is that this is a remake. Originally on the Nintendo DS. I like solving crime, but not this way. I’ll pass. That pup is super cute.
DecaPolice
Tumblr media
I am a little familiar with Level 5. This game looks very interesting. I don’t think I’ll check it out but I like the open world aspect and solving crimes.
Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the lost Demon
Tumblr media
I know the appeal of Bayonetta…but for sure not for me. I will say that I enjoy the art style and it’s very reminiscent of a lot of indie games coming out right now. The art is like a watercolor sort overlay, so I can dig that. But respectfully I will pass on this one.
Splatoon 3: Expansion Pass
Tumblr media
Splatoon is a cool concept and the color usage is amazing. I unfortunately have never played any of the games. I know that it has a huge fan base and all and I’m sure people are excited about this. Maybe in the future I’ll cave in and buy it.
Wow this has been a really long post. I think I’ll stop here for now and this will be Part 1. Tune in for part 2!

For this art, I used the character Luis Sera mixing design from original game and the remake re4, and one of the villains - Bitores Mendez who chased Luis throughout the game. 💖His jacket is my goddess💖 I liked to draw drops on clothes and hair. It's kind a creates a feeling of dampness and cold of the Spanish autumn, which permeates the atmosphere of the game.
